Destination Greater Victoria and the Victoria Branch of the BC Restaurant & Foodservices Association (BCRFA) are collaborating again to present the highly anticipated event – Dine Around & Stay in Town Victoria for it’s 20th year. This beloved food festival showcases 40+ of Victoria’s finest restaurants, each offering enticing set three-course menus at affordable prices.

Embraced by both locals and visitors, the festival provides a diverse array of culinary delights and access to top-notch accommodations throughout the Greater Victoria area, creating a memorable experience for all.

From waterfront dining to cozy accommodations, here’s our guide to experiencing the best of family-friendly dining and staying in Victoria during Dine Around & Stay in Town on January 26 – February 11, 2024.

We got a sneak peek of Dine Around & Stay in Town Victoria and were hosted with our family to enjoy the family friendly city, accommodations, and restaurants.

Dining Delights

Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

Spinnakers, a gastro brewpub in Victoria brings together local cuisine with artisanal beer. Holding the distinction of being Canada’s oldest licensed brewpub, Spinnakers stands as a trailblazer in the North American micro-brewing space embraced by both locals and beer enthusiasts from afar.

Their commitment to supporting Vancouver Island’s farmers shines through in Spinnakers’ menu, which proudly features locally sourced ingredients. When we were dining here, we were very impressed be their honey mussels sourced right from the island.

They are offering a $35 breakfast menu, $35 lunch menu, and $55 dinner menu.

The Courtney Room

Located in the Magnolia Hotel, The Courtney Room combines old-world charm with a modern twist. This elegant restaurant offers a diverse menu with a focus on classic dishes prepared with a contemporary flair. The ambiance is perfect for a romantic dinner or a celebratory meal.

When we were dining here for dinner, the portions were great and left us feeling full. The desserts were exceptional and we had to eat every single bite.

They are offering a $35 brunch menu, $35 lunch menu, and $65 dinner menu.

Vis-à-Vis

Nestled in one of Victoria’s most historic and renowned neighborhoods, Vis à Vis Wine & Charcuterie Bar embraces a philosophy of face-to-face connection. Settle into the best spot at the bar to experience a customized and captivating experience by their engaging staff while indulging in a glass of wine, locally crafted beer, or a signature cocktail.

We came here to preview their $55 dinner menu and we really enjoyed the Ling Cod as well as the Bison Shoulder. The bison was so tender and worth the $10 supplement cost.

They are offering a $55 dinner menu.

Vista 18

Located on the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites is Victoria’s only rooftop restaurant and bar. Vista 18 opens at 5pm and offer a menu that features local and seasonal ingredients, which shine on the plate. As you dine with the scenic view of the city blow, enjoy the Dine Around & Stay in Town Victoria menu with their fantastic wine pairings. If you’re lucky enough, you may even catch a sunrise or sunset at Vista 18.

We previewed their $55 dinner menu and thought the menu was well balanced. The smoked turkey black bean soup had a depth of flavour and a kick of heat to it like a Mexican tortilla soup. The sous vide pork loin was a huge portion and the seasonal vegetables were great. Ending off with the pumpkin spice chocolate cheesecake was perfect.

They are offering a $55 dinner menu.

Staying in Style at the Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites

Nestled in the heart of downtown Victoria, the Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites is locally owned and operated. The hotel is designed with the comfort and enjoyment of families in mind, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a memorable and stress-free getaway.

Spacious Accommodations for Every Family Size

Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites understands that families come in all shapes and sizes. With a variety of room options like spacious suites, ensuring everyone has their own comfortable space to relax after a day of exploration.

When we were staying here with our infant, it was great to have access to a baby crib as well as a kitchenette to prepare formula for the kiddo.

Convenient Family-Focused Dining

The hotel’s dining option – Vista 18 is convenient for families who want to dine-in or take out. We enjoyed the express breakfast option from our room where we preorder before midnight and shows up in the morning at your selected time slot. The breakfast options were nice and we enjoyed the Vista Breakfast along with a smoothie and coffee.

If you choose to dine-in, Vista 18 welcomes children, providing high chairs to make dining a breeze for families with young ones.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation today announced that they will receive 100 per cent of the proceeds of every Smile Cookie sold at select Tim Hortons locations across Metro Vancouver during the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign that runs from Sept. 19 through to Sept. 25, 2022. Each cookie costs $1, plus tax, and can be purchased at any Tim Hortons restaurant, or by placing an order through the Tim Hortons mobile app for delivery.

Smile Cookies are made from Tim Hortons’s chocolate chunk cookies and are hand-decorated specially for the Smile Cookie campaign. 128 Tim Hortons stores across British Columbia have selected BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as their Smile Cookie partner to support. In 2021, the Smile Cookie campaign raised $168,999.57 for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“Each year, BC Children’s Hospital provides specialized care to more than 138,000 kids throughout the province. The community support we receive from passionate partners like Tim Hortons is essential in our work to overcome childhood illnesses and improve the lives of countless kids and families. We are grateful to everyone who adds a little sweetness to their day, or someone else’s, with the purchase of a Smile Cookie this week,” said Rita Thodos, Vice President of Philanthropy at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Proceeds raised from campaigns like Smile Cookie go directly towards ground-breaking research, state-of-the-art technology, and programs that support clinical care, to ensure that sick and injured children across B.C. receive the best care possible – ultimately helping more kids get back to being kids.”

“Tim Hortons restaurant owners and staff are excited for the 26th annual Smile Cookie campaign. It is a fun initiative, and it is wonderful to see the smiles both on the cookies, and the customers’ faces when they purchase a Smile Cookie knowing that 100 per cent of the proceeds go towards incredible organizations like BC Children’s Hospital Foundation,” said Ben Yip, Regional Marketing Manager, BC & Yukon, Tim Hortons. “Tim Hortons Smile Cookie has raised over $77 million across North America since 1996 and last year alone raised a record $12 million.”

“We’re excited to participate in the 26th annual Smile Cookie campaign. It’s such a pleasure to partner with BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, a local hospital that does such impactful work and the only hospital in the province devoted exclusively to the care of children,” said Fred Melin, Tim Hortons Restaurant Owner in Vancouver. “Our team members craft each Smile Cookie with care and are proud to serve them to guests who come in throughout the week to support such a great cause.”

The annual Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign supports 665 charities and community groups across Canada. The first Smile Cookie campaign was launched in 1996, originally raising funds for Hamilton Children’s Hospital. Since then, the annual charitable campaign supports local hospitals, community care organizations, food banks and schools.

With the busy summer season fast-approaching and as COVID-19 restrictions lift, McDonald’s Canada and its independent franchisees are looking to hire 25,000 team members over the next three months. To capture the attention of potential applicants, this year the company is introducing a new game from Verizon, Crush the Rush Crew, giving players a glimpse of the behind-the-counter fun.

JOBS FROM COAST TO COAST

“In the next three months between corporate-owned and independent franchised locations, we’re growing restaurant teams across the country” said Erin Moore, National Director, Human Resources, McDonald’s Canada. “We’re looking to hire crew members who want to build skills in a safe, fun and inclusive environment.”

HOW DO I TEST OUT BEING A PART OF THE CREW?

Building on past recruiting innovations like Snapplications and Alexa voice applications, McDonald’s Canada has a brand-new game, developed with Verizon. In Crush the Rush Crew, players race the clock filling orders at the Drive-Thru and interacting with their teammates to get the job done.

“It’s a fast-paced game that brings the energy of McDonald’s restaurants to life and focuses on the importance of teamwork,” says Rebecca Smart, Marketing Director, Brand Strategy, McDonald’s Canada. “Players get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the job while working alongside their virtual co-workers to solve problems and complete orders as they come in.”

It’s available at https://mcdonaldscrushtherushcrew.ca/ between now and May 22 for everyone to try.

While the game gives players a sneak peak, nothing beats being a part of a real McDonald’s team. Think it’s time to apply? Go here.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM A JOB AT McDONALD’S?

Crew can expect to learn teamwork, leadership, agility, resilience, decision-making, and more. McDonald’s Canada believes that investments in world-class training, education, flexible work schedules and scholarship programs are considered an essential part of the business, and integral to employee growth.

“I believe working at a McDonald’s restaurant can help prepare employees for future jobs in the workforce,” said Moore. “As one of the largest employers in Canada, McDonald’s prides itself on being able to offer employees the opportunity to learn important skills that can be used in other jobs.”

In fact, according to a recent survey conducted among members of the Angus Reid Forum, over 60 per cent of Canadians who used to work at McDonald’s said they still use skills they learned under the Arches in their careers today. A first job at McDonald’s can serve as a springboard to jobs in exciting and diverse fields. Based on results from the same survey, Canadians with previous work experience at a McDonald’s restaurant went on to work in fields such as education (6%), healthcare (8%) and government (9%).

Lindeman’s Wines is hosting the most sustainable wine tasting in the city, with the launch of Lindeman’s Sunshine Station at Stackt Market in Toronto, starting on May 5th, 2022.

As of January 2022, Lindeman’s officially reached 100% carbon neutrality – a testament to the ongoing efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and create positive change. Without stopping there, Lindeman’s continues to work towards their goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2024. This goal also extends to the community and Lindeman’s consumers.

After being cooped up for the winter and without much to do in-person over the last few years, our sustainable habits are dwindling. In search of a fresh start, Lindeman’s is hoping to give people a little kick to get back into the routine of taking small steps towards a more sustainable future.

With this in mind, Lindeman’s decided to bring the fun energy of a pop-up, while staying true to their mission. At the pop-up, visitors will get to take small sustainable steps through interactive activities and get to calculate their own carbon footprints, all while sipping on delicious Lindeman’s wine paired with food being served at Stackt from a fully sustainable cocktail box. Every element is made 100% sustainably, with carbon neutrality at the forefront, and will be repurposed after the station closes.

Lindeman’s Sunshine Station Information:

  • Food, wine, fun and engaging sustainable activities
  • May 5th to May 31st, 2022 at Stackt Market, Toronto
  • Tues-Fri: 4pm-9:pm, Sat: 12pm-9pm, Sun: 12pm-6pm, Mon (after May 24th): 4pm-9pm

Vancouver Island’s Shelter Point Distillery has won two awards at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the oldest and largest spirits competition in the world. The distillery’s Single Malt and Smoke Point Whisky were each awarded a Double Gold medal – a coveted accolade that honours the finest products in the world.

One of the most prestigious and respected spirits competitions, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is judged by renowned food and beverage experts. After entering these two whiskies in the competition for the first time, Shelter Point Distillery won two Double Gold medals in the 2022 awards, which are rare and only awarded to entries that receive a Gold medal rating by every member of the judging panel. Double Gold medals commemorate the very finest spirits in the world and mark the competition’s highest honour.

“This is the first year Shelter Point Distillery has entered the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and to win two Double Gold medals is an exceptional milestone,” said Stephen Goodridge, General Manager of Shelter Point Distillery. “It is a testament to the quality of the whisky being distilled and bottled here, and we are thrilled as a Canadian distillery to have our single malts internationally recognized as some of the finest whiskies in the world. This win isn’t just for us – it’s for the entire Campbell River and Vancouver Island community.”

Shelter Point Distillery’s Single Malt Whisky and Smoke Point have been awarded Double Gold medals in the Canadian Whisky category. Single Malt Whisky shows a balanced marriage of fruits, caramel, barley, baking spices, honey, seaside whiff, hints of wine, smoke and the sweet leathery mouthfeel of a high-quality single malt. Like campfire in a bottle, Smoke Point whisky is sweet and salty, with peated warmth to comfort the soul.

Shelter Point Distillery’s whiskies start with only the highest quality Canadian two-row barley, grown on the estate and sourced from top B.C. producers. The team employ a traditional approach, including slow fermentation and double-distillation, to produce the finest expressions of whisky. Each spirit is infused with natural glacier-fed water supplied by an aquifer, then aged within a few hundred yards of the Pacific Ocean in an array of wood casks selected from around the world, imparting distinctive character, complexity and flavours.

Shelter Point Distillery is newly reopened for tastings and tours this spring, and open Wednesdays to Saturdays (10am to 5pm). Drop-ins are welcome to taste the spirits, though advance reservations are required for distillery tours. For more information, to shop Shelter Point’s world-class whiskies, or to book your distillery experience, visit www.shelterpoint.ca.

Later Pizza is now serving up mouth-watering pizzas and hand-picked slices, local craft wine and beer, and top-notch service to Waterloo.

The pizzeria is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Dan Lennox and George Russell, and award-winning chef Nick McGregor—the team behind Collingwood hotspot Bent Taco. Lennox and Russell grew up together, often shooting the breeze over a pie at their favourite neighbourhood pizzerias. “Pizza joints are always the easiest, most comfortable spots for getting together with family and friends over amazing food,” says Lennox. “We always dreamed of opening one.”

Through the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, even as Bent’s takeout needs surged, the team still needed additional revenue to keep their family of chefs and servers working. This gave them the push they needed to try out their collective vision for the perfect pizza. They joined forces with Noel Brohner, the go-to pizza guy for A-list chefs and celebrities including Tom Hanks and Eric Wareheim. Named the “Dough Guru” by Food and Wine Magazine, Brohner worked with chef extraordinaire McGregor to develop Later’s signature crust and novel topping combinations, which the team offered for takeout from a repurposed, Superman-style 1980s phone booth in Collingwood throughout 2020. Almost immediately, they started selling out every single night. In fact, demand was so high they had to order larger ovens to keep up with the week-long waiting lists.

Now, Later Pizza has stepped out of the phone booth to open the first brick-and-mortar shop in one of Ontario’s favourite cities, in partnership with local restaurateurs James Barnett and Taylor Bach, who really brought the idea to life in Waterloo. Designed in collaboration with Toronto-based interiors firm Futurestudio (Piano Piano, Crosley’s, The Wood Owl, and more), the Waterloo outpost is a modern take on a classic slice shop, complete with a sculptural display centrepiece and custom art throughout.

Lennox and Russell have zeroed in on the elevated experience pizza-lovers are looking for, while Brohner and McGregor have teamed up to create the menu, which includes accessible classics like Pepperoni and their own take on Hawaiian, as well as adventurous Later creations with non-traditional topping combinations. The “Mortadella” boasts hot honey, spicy arugula, and truffle sauce alongside the namesake ingredient, and the “Lord of Chicken” offers up shawarma-style chicken and donair sauce. They’ve even re-imagined the slice experience by introducing The Highslice: guests select a base pizza from the display case and then go crazy, customizing to their heart’s content. From there, each one-of-a-kind slice gets folded and fired for a unique flavour experience that’s both hot and cold.

All pizzas are made with the best ingredients and have a thin, crispy, and light crust. Later also serves up a curated selection of natural wines, and their own Later Lager.

Later Pizza can be found at 255 King Street North in Waterloo, Ontario. For menu, ordering, and more information, please visit laterpizza.com.

What do the highly popular and Instagrammable sights of The Cowichan River, Garibaldi, and Joffre Lakes have in common? Water! 20% of the world’s freshwater flows in Canadians lakes and rivers, and Coors Seltzer is the hard seltzer on a mission to protect it!

Last year, Coors Seltzer funded several projects across Canada, including the Hanceville fire reforestation project. Now in its second year on shelves, Coors Seltzer will more than double its 2021 water restoration goals.

Every 12-pack of Coors Seltzer purchased will help to restore 1,000 litres of Canada’s waters through Coor’s Seltzer’s partnership with Change the Course. Their overall shared commitment for 2022 is to restore a total of 6.5 billion litres of Canada’s waters by the end of the year. There will also be a regional restoration project taking place again this year in B.C..

Everyone knows Tyrannosaurus rex. But did you know that T. rex hatchlings were fluffy and gangly, more like turkeys than the massive killing machines they grew up to be? Or that T. rex evolved from a large group of dinosaurs that were, for the most part, small, and fast? Or how about that the mega- predator had the rare ability to pulverize and partially digest bones? T. rex: The Ultimate Predator, presented by RBC and White Spot Restaurants, will be on display at Science World from February 26, 2022 until January, 22 2023, and will introduce you to the entire tyrannosaur family, revealing the amazing story of the most iconic dinosaur in the world through life-sized models, fossil casts, and engaging interactives.

Visitors to T. rex: The Ultimate Predator will encounter a massive life-sized model of a T. rex with patches of feathers—the definitive representation of this prehistoric predator. The exhibition will also include reconstructions of a T. rex hatchling and a four-year-old juvenile T. rex; a “roar mixer” where visitors can imagine what T. rex may have sounded like by blending sounds from other animals; a shadow theater featuring a floor projection of an adult T. rex skeleton coming to life; and a life-sized animation of T. rex in a Cretaceous environment that responds to visitors’ movements.

This exhibition encourages visitors to engage in investigation with imagination and explore how the Tyrannosaurus rex may have looked and behaved over 66 million years ago. As visitors tour the gallery, they’ll examine the T. rex in all stages of its life, from a young, furry baby, to a massive, fully grown apex predator through its 100 million years of evolution. All the while, new technologies, ways of thinking and recent discoveries will encourage visitors to observe clues, ask questions and test new hypotheses, challenging what you thought you knew about these creatures. For example, “Was the T. rex the colour of a crocodile? Or could they have sported an attractive display of bright feathers like a bird?”

In this exhibition visitors can expect to engage with:

  • Life-size models of a number of tyrannosaurs, including: Proceratosaurus bradleyi
  • A cast fossil of a T. rex toe bone and a touchable cast of a T. rex thigh bone
  • A cast of the youngest and most complete juvenile tyrannosaur fossil found to date
  • A cast fossil of one of T. rex’s huge, banana-shaped teeth,
  • A tabletop “Investigation Station,” where visitors can explore a variety of fossil casts ranging from coprolite (fossilized feces) to a gigantic femur, with virtual tools including a CT scanner, measuring tape, and a microscope to learn more about what such specimens can reveal to scientists about the biology and behavior of T. rex.
  • A full-scale reproduction of a T. rex fossil skeleton, the subject of the exhibition’s “shadow theater,” in which the skeleton’s 40-foot shadow will “come to life” and demonstrate to visitors how the animal moved and interacted with prey and its own kind.
  • A praxinoscope that animates the difference between walking and running—T. rex could only truly run when it was young.

T. rex, The Ultimate Predator is on starting on February 26, 2022 and runs for one year. Ticket with admission, more information can be found at scienceworld.ca
