With this crazy pandemic, Rocky Mountain Flatbread has pivoted their business during this time to offer their new frying pan pizza kits to keep your family safe this Fall. You can have a taste of fresh Rocky Mountain Flatbread straight from your home.

They created these kits for families, foodies and businesses who are looking for fun and fabulous ways to connect over the holidays. With more people cooking at home during the pandemic and looking for fun ways to celebrate virtually over the holidays, the Rocky Mountain Flatbread team has designed a pizza kit that replicates a forno-fired pizza for home kitchens in minutes.

Each Frying Pan Pizza Kit contains two 10″ pizzas and includes fresh local ingredients from their restaurant kitchens. The step by step cooking instructions demonstrate the frying pan pizza method which cooks the base of the pizza on the stove top and finishes it off under the broiler for that forno-fired pizza taste that is so loved at Rocky Mountain Flatbread restaurants.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank will receive a $1 donation for each pizza kit ordered for take out at Rocky’s two Vancouver restaurants, Main Street and Kitsilano.

Kids Frying Pan Pizza Kit, for Little Chefs

The Kids Frying Pan Pizza Kit guides little chefs to create two 8″ mozza pizzas at home. The kit contains Rocky’s favourite ingredients – organic flour and pizza dough, house made organic tomato sauce, and all Canadian shredded mozzarella along with easy to follow instructions. It also comes with double chocolate brownies for dessert.

My little on is almost 2, but we had fun in the kitchen stretching out the dough, putting on sauce, and throwing the cheese on top. Then, I took care of the cooking portion as she watched.

Dessert was all eaten by mommy, but I won’t tell her what she missed out on. hahaha.

Margherita Frying Pan Pizza Kit

The Rocky Mountain Flatbread team has assembled a Frying Pan Pizza Kit to create two delicious 10″ margherita pizzas using a frying pan in your home kitchen. Rocky’s double fermented organic dough, house made tomato sauce, Canadian cheeses and fresh basil are included along with easy to follow step by step instructions.

I made my kid assemble this also. She was there anyways and she was already having so much fun.

Cooking on the stove top was very easy and simple, but make sure to test your broiler ahead of time. I didn’t realize my broiler turns off when the door is left open as a safety precaution. Luckily, we were able to find another oven to use.

Cosmonaut Cocktail Kits

The Cosmonaut is a cross between a Moscow Mule and Cosmopolitan. Grab a few ice cubes from the freezer before rolling up your sleeves for some cocktail shaking fun. The kit comes with 2 servings.

Ordering

Frying Pan Pizza Kits and Cosmonaut Cocktail Kits will be available via Doordash, and for takeout and online ordering from Rocky’s website at www.rockymountainflatbread.ca

Final Thoughts

If you’re a fan of Rocky Mountain Flatbread and want a fun family activity to keep the kids busy, check out their Frying Pan Pizza Kit. For the parents that need a little something extra just for themselves, grab the Cosmonaut Cocktail Kits to pair.

It was the first time my kid made pizza and she enjoyed it a lot more seeing the effort that went into it.

The kits are great as it has everything you need. Just make sure you have a large pan and a oven.

I’ve been living in Burnaby since I was born and the food scene is always very diverse and I just love family owned businesses. Pizza Art opened up in Burnaby 3 months ago replacing Grano Pizza.

The family that owns it now is Turkish and they have added a few unique items on the menu – Lahmajoun and Turkish Kofte. Of course they have regular pizza options and some more fun flavours too like Mac & Cheese, Roast Beef, and alfredo sauce pizza too.

They source their meats from Alberta and they use quality ingredients. Their dough has a nice chew and it isn’t greasy at all.

Interior

It is a small shop with a few seats inside. You can get pizza by the slice for $2.15, which is popular. You can also get delivery through their website or order through delivery apps like Skip the Dishes or Door Dash.

Menu

Lahmajoun

Lahmajoun is essentially a meat pizza, sometimes even known as a Turkish Pizza. Pizza Art’s version has ground meat, veggies, pizza, and spces spread thinly on a thin piece of dough. It is meant to be wrapped with the toppings which can include lettuce, parsley, pickled onions, tomato, and lemon.

All you do is wrap it up and enjoy. It’s pretty unique and you definitely don’t see this at many places around town. Our friend loved it so much, he’s probably been back for this 3 times already.

Turkish Kofte

This is a type of kebab made of ground beef and they serve it with onions and tomatoes. It is wrapped around their pizza dough and it becomes like a sandwich. The Kofte was very soft and juicy.

Salmon Mist

This was one of our favourites! It has a lot of fresh and fragrant dill, paired with salty capers, tomato sauce, and red onions. They use BC wild salmon for this pizza.

Tuna Mild

The other side of that Salmon Mist pizza is the Tuna Mild. This has tomato sauce, tuna with mayonnaise, red onion, corn, and lemon. This was one of our favourites too and the combination of mayo with tuna wasn’t fishy at all.

Garden Rocket Funghi

This has alfredo sauce, mozzarella, Fior Di Latte, grana padano, mushrooms, red onion, and topped with fresh arugula. One of our top favourites too. How can you go wrong with mushroom and cheese. The arugula added a nice peppery finish.

Margherita

A classic pizza to order and it has tomato sauce, mozzarella, Fior Di Latte, and then topped with fresh basil, tomato, and olive oil. They pick the basil leaves off their basil plants, so it is very fresh.

Shrimp Bianco

This seafood pizza has alfredo sauce, mozzarella, shrimp, spinach, chopped garlic, and red onion. It’s a simple pizza and the ingredients work in harmony so nothing overpowers each other. It might even need a kick of spice to really enhance the flavours.

Shrimp Club

They don’t just have one shrimp pizza, they have two. This has Thousand Island sauce, mozzarella, wild pink shrimp, parmesan, and parsley flakes. We found this very odd to have Thousand Island sauce as the base, but apparently they did some market research and found it popular among Asian countries.

Butter Chicken

This butter chicken pizza has a butter chicken sauce as the base, mozzarella, cheddar, spicy chicken, red pepper, and red onions. It has a little kick of heat to this, which is nice.

BBQ Chicken

The BBQ Chicken pizza has BBQ sauce, mozzarella, grilled chicken, red peppers, red onions, and a BBQ drizzle on top. This is good if you like BBQ sauce. The grilled chicken was decent.

Meat Lovers

It’s not everyday you see roast beef on a pizza. It has tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, roast beef, ground beef, and cheddar. It is delicious.

Nutella Pizza

The Nutella Pizza only comes in medium size with Nutella, banana, strawberries, chocolate chip, chocolate drizzle, blueberries, and icing sugar.

Definitely a dessert pizza and great for kids or those with a sweet tooth. It’s a good combination with their chewy dough. The whole pizza sounds super sweet, but it wasn’t because of their dough, so the ratio of it balances out.

Final Thoughts

There are definitely a lot of pizza shops in Burnaby, but if you love supporting local family businesses and finding something unique with creative pizzas, definitely check out Pizza Art.

Our favourite items was the Lahmajoun, Salmon Mist Pizza, Tuna Mild Pizza, and Garden Rocket Funghi.

Panago has been expanding their plant based pizza options on their menu. We noticed they are now offering Beyond Meat Italian Sausage on a few of their newer pizzas.

It’s a great options if you have a pizza party or an office party and you need some vegetarian and lactose-free options.

We decided to order these for dinner and give this a taste test.

Plant-based Beyond Summer BBQ

This pizza has BBQ sauce, Beyond Meat Italian sausage crumble, red onions, roasted corn medley seasoned with onions, red & green peppers, jalapeño peppers, and dairy-free Daiya cheese.

The Beyond Meat Italian sausage crumble has a good texture and it can be easily mistaken as sausage. If you’re not lactose intolerant, the Daiya cheese has a very gummy processed taste that didn’t sit well for us and couldn’t get past it’s texture.

Beyond Summer BBQ

This version without the Daiya has BBQ sauce, Beyond Meat Italian sausage crumble, red onions, roasted corn medley seasoned with onions, red & green peppers, jalapeño peppers, and mozzarella.

It’s so much better with mozzarella! You can taste the strong BBQ taste emanating from every bite. There is sweetness from the corn and the jalapeño gives it a kick of spice.

Final Thoughts

It’s great that Panago is giving more options for their customers were dietary restrictions. Since pizza is a common item found at parties, customizing for those who are lactose intolerant or vegetarian is easier now.

As a meat eater, I would definitely stay away from the Daiya, but their Beyond Meat Italian sausage crumble passes the test.

AJ’s Brooklyn Pizza Joint recently opened up in Vancouver on Broadway. Having Brooklyn-style pizza in Vancouver will remind you of the times in New York searching for the best slice. They specialize in traditional NYC pizza that is served throughout for the five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan.

We came for their grand opening and dined with other wonderful foodies in town. The atmosphere of this Pizza Joint is very casual and great for pizza lovers.

Menu

Charcuterie Board

Charcuterie board of assorted meats and cheese is a good way to start the meal to have something to pick at before the rest of the dishes arrive. Delicious and a great sharing item for the table.

Classic Caesar Salad

This has romaine lettuce and croutons, served with Caesar dressing, Pparmesan cheese, and seasonings. A good classic salad that you can’t go wrong.

Sicilian Square Pizzas

These were cut up into square unlike triangular pizza slices. Grab your spatula and pick them up. It’s fun to see all the cheese being stretched. We had the New York and Brooklyn choices.

The New York Sicilian has mozzarella cheese, Sicilian tomato sauce, and fresh basil. This is 16″ and there were 20 slices to it. The Brooklyn has pepperoni, spicy Italian sausage, mozzarella cheese, Sicilian tomato sauce, olive oil and basil. You’ll notice the crust is about 1″ thick with a crunchy bottom and airy interior.

John’s Pepperoni Pie

They created this pizza because of John’s on Bleaker Street in New York City. We’ve been there and you can’t go wrong with a classic pepperoni pizza. This version has mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Grimaldi’s Classic Margherita Pizza

If you’re heard of Grimaldi’s, they are one of the popular pizza restaurants in Brooklyn and there are long lines because tourists like me need a taste of the best. You will find AJ’s version of their Margherita Pizza with mozzarella cheese, cured tomato sauce, Parmesan cheese, and basil.

The Spicy Vesuvio Pizza

This has mozzarella cheese, spicy Italian sausage, mushrooms, chili flakes, and Parmesan cheese.

Suzanne’s Red Pepper Pesto Pizza

This has artichoke, pesto, shredded mozza, and roasted red pepper.

Final Thoughts

The slices are huge and the prices are very reasonable. If you’re getting a whole pizza, you’ll want to come here with a few friends. Don’t forget to fold the pizza over just like a Brooklyn slice since it’s so wide. The pizza pie’s were our favourite as it was a bit thinner. All the pizza’s were tasty and not greasy at all compared to other places.

Assembli has opened their newest location in Downtown Vancouver in the Oceanic Plaza Towers close to Burrard and Pender. They specialize in two things – custom-made salads and pizza. All for one flat price of $14 with any topping you desire. If you’re indecisive just like me, there are a few pre-selected options on the menu.

You won’t see any surprises on your bill for your salad or pizza. It’s very customizable to your taste, so if you hate onions or mushrooms, you’ll never have to see them again.

The ingredients they us are fresh-non-GMO, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, and local and organic where possible.

Interior

There are a few tables and seating by the windows, but a lot of people end up getting it to go.

Menu

Order Online

If you’re in a rush, you can order your meal online to skip the line. Easy and simple if you have a very short lunch break.

Kale Caesar Salad with Chicken

This is one of their options and I added a protein, which doesn’t increase the price. In the bowl is kale, romaine, home-style croutons, parmesan, Caesar dressing and herb roast chicken.

Carne-Dian Pizza

This has seasoned ground beef, pepperoni, bacon, mozzarella, sautéed mushrooms, red onion, and spicy tomato sauce.

It goes right into their oven which is heated to 700 degrees to get this pizza nice and crisp. I really like the carne-dian as it is a meat-lovers pizza. Can’t go wrong with this unless you’re a vegetarian

Beer

If you’re looking for a drink, they have beer on the menu to pair with their pizza.

Final Thoughts

It’s a good addition to the Downtown area where a lot of financial buildings are. If you’re looking for quick, customizable meal options, here it is.

The Italian Osteria & Cheesebar is now open in Walnut Grove, Langley. This is the first Italian concept restaurant for Joseph Richard Group (JRG), whose other establishments include 14 public houses and three S+L Kitchen & Bar restaurants. It’s a good addition to the area as there aren’t that many options in this area.

The menu was designed by JRG Director of Culinary Operations Matthew Stowe (Top Chef Canada winner) and the JRG Culinary team comprised of Executive Chef Andy Slinn, Corporate Chef David Jorge (MasterChef Canada winner) as well as the Chef of The Italian, Jason Harper. They also have vegetarian and gluten-free menus for those with dietary restrictions.

We were invited for a VIP tasting to get a feel for their restaurant concept a few days before their grand opening.

Interior

The 180-seat restaurant has some booth seating as well as tables for small to large groups. The interior is dim with dark coloured furniture. It makes for a cozy intimate atmosphere. There is a long bar on the other side of the restaurant if you want to see all the action from the bartenders.

Drinks

To pair with Italian food, they have a range of drinks on the menu like wine, cocktails, beers and non-alcoholic options.

Antipasti

We started the evening with the antipasti, which has carefully selected local and Italian meats and cheeses, marinated artichokes, olives, eggplant caponata, Italian crackers and toasted focaccia. They have a cheese menu dedicated to different styles of cheeses too.

Spaghetti and Meatballs

There are 3 plump slow cooked house made meatballs, San Marzano tomato sauce, seasoned ricotta, Grana Padano, and fresh basil.

The Beehive Pizza

This unique pizza has spicy Calabrian salami, honey, mozzarella, Grana Padano, San Marzano tomato sauce. The honey is definitely different as I’ve never had honey on pizza till now.

Vongole

The pasta is linguine, local garlic, fresh manila clams, white wine, parsley, and Calabrian chili.

Braised Shortrib Pappardelle

This has San Marzano tomato sauce, wilted baby arugula, and Grana Padano.

Local Butternut Squash Ravioli

Brown butter sauce, house made ravioli, roasted mushrooms, caramelized squash, and Grana Padano. Of all the pasta dishes we tried, this one was my favourite.

Tiramisu Sphere

This is one exciting dessert on the menu, You will find lady finger cookies, vanilla mascarpone cream, and bitter chocolate crumble. They pour espresso anglaise over the chocolate shell until the chocolate melts to reveal the ingredients inside.

Nonna’s Lemon Tart

This deconstructed lemon tart has lemon custard, coconut crumble, vanilla bean gelato, meringue, and basil. A tart refreshing dessert option.

Final Thoughts

The Italian Osteria & Cheesebar is open seven days a week for dinner only (5pm to midnight), with plans to open for lunch within the first few months. My favourite dish was the Local Butternut Squash Ravioli and the tiramisu sphere is fun and interactive. I wouldn’t drive very far to go eat at The Italian, but it’s a good addition to the neighbourhood to give people more options. I would recommend getting a bunch of dishes to share family-style.

Via Tevere is a Neopolitan Pizzeria in Vancouver close to Commercial Drive. I’ve heard they have some good pizza and it’s taken us a long time to come here for dinner. If you ask Vancouverites where is the place to have the best pizza in Vancouver, this place is probably on that list. We came here for Valentines Day unplanned as our original plan was to cook dinner…but both of us didn’t feel like cooking. As we passed by Via Tevere, we couldn’t help but park and see if we could get a seat. There are no reservations, so it is walk-in only. Luckily for us, it was still early and there were a few spots left.

Interior

There are a good amount of seats and a bar in the dining area. The pizza oven is in the back and there are a few seats there so you can see them make all the pizza.

Menu

Drinks

They have a bunch of ciders, beer, wine and spirits on the menu, but we had some Apple Cider to go with our meal.

Polpette della Nonna

These homemade meatballs in tomato sauce are delicious. You order it by piece but I would highly recommend it. It is so moist and the tomato sauce is so addictive.

Pasta del Giorno

Their pasta dish changes daily, so you’ll have to ask the serve what is on the menu. The day we were here, it had mushrooms and it tasted great.

Margherita Al Pomodoro

We went with the classic Margherita pizza as its a good way to see if they can make this delicious and they sure did. The pizza was thin and had a crispy crust with spots of char from the oven.

Tris di Dolci

This is the trio of their 3 dessserts, which is great to share between us. Since I love to try a bit of everything, we had to get this.

Graffe con Nutella

This is handmade Neapolitan fritters dusted with sugar and cinnamon and lastly drizzled with Nutella. Essentially, it was like a Nutella donut.

Tiramisu

This Italian Classic has layers of coffee drenched lady fingers with Mascarpone cream It is then topped with cocoa powder. It has 2 layers of lady fingers and 2 more layers of cream.

Torta Caprese

This rich chocolate cake is made with roasted almonds and walnuts with a hint of orange. This is flourless and gluten free if you have dietary restrictions. It was pretty good and it also reminded me of nutella because of the nuts.

Baci Chocolates are given at the end of the meal and these Italian chocolates are made with hazelnuts, chocolate and sealed with a love note. A good ending to the meal.

Final Thoughts

The meal was great and we left happy with our stomaches full. We’ll definitely be back. You must order the meatballs as well as the pizza here.

MOD Pizza is a quick-service chain restaurant where you can build your own pizza and salad for a set price. We were shopping at the outlet across the street and wandered to MOD Pizza for lunch.

You can choose their prebuilt salads and pizzas, or you can create one of your own with as many toppings as you like. All the ingredients are in front of you, so you can see all the options.

Salad

I went with something that is like a chicken caesar salad. I was going to stick with regular caesar salad but all the other toppings tempted me. It’s a good option.

Pizza

They have mini (6″) or mega size (11″) but we all got mini. It was fun for everyone to put their pizza together and share what they created. No matter how much topping choices you add to it, it never gets overloaded. The staff somewhat spreads them all evenly around the pizza.

Drinks

They have a variety of bottle drinks and fountain drinks. Also beers.

Final Thoughts

It was good to check out this chain, but we all thought it was decent for customizable quick -service food option in Castle Rock.

We were in New York for a week and one of places the internet told us to go to is Joe’s Pizza for an authentic New York slice. We went to their original location in Greenwich Village for a snack. For around $3 a slice, it’s not bad at all.

Interior

The shop is small and has limited seating. If you’re lucky enough to grab a seat, you should eat the pizza fresh. We ended up getting it to go and back at the apartment. They put our 2 slices in a take out box and it was easy to take on the subway.

Slice

Pepperoni Pizza and Fresh Mozzarella pizza were our picks. The slices were of good size and the crust was still a bit crisp with slight char.

Final Thoughts

Was it the best pizza we had? Of course not. For the convenience and price, it was decent. There are still lots of places in New York that make a good pizza especially in Brooklyn.

Beanery Coffeehouse & Eatery is a local family-run business serving up, coffee, pizza, and sandwiches. They are located on Panorama Drive in Coquitlam hidden up in the Westwood Plateau residential area. I haven’t heard of them until they sent me a message to come check them out. Since I am in Burnaby, it wasn’t too far away to come here for lunch.

Interior

There is tons of parking space outside and also a few people walked to get here as there are houses everywhere. It’s a very family friendly space with a few games to keep kids entertained.

At our table, we found a box and inside it was a wooden puzzle. We also saw a tic tac toe game at another table too.

Menu

Pomme de Terre Pizza

This has thinly sliced Potatoes seasoned with garlic, Fresh Mozarella, Fresh Basil Leaves on Italian Herbs and Olive Oil base. I haven’t seen a of pizza’s topped with potatoes, but we surprisingly enjoyed it. We could taste that a lot of care went into this pizza and it shows.

The bottom of the pizza ha a nice golden brown colour and is pretty crispy.

The crust is also crispy and it’s the dough is nice an thin. Good ratio of toppings to dough too.

Spicy Mango Chicken Pizza

This has a Hot Sauce Base, Chicken, Parmesan, Mozza, Green Peppers, and Red Peppers. We wanted to try something that had meat and was spicy.

They use Mango Reaper by Admiral Hot Sauce and it really packs a punch. It used both Carolina Reapers and Ghost Peppers, so they aren’t kidding around.

There was lot of chicken on this pizza and the colours of the bell peppers kinda make it a bit festive.

Shaken Iced Tea and Lattes

They have a variety of shaken ice teas and also coffee using JJ Bean.

Final Thoughts

It’s a nice hidden gem in the area for those looking for locally crafted pizzas, sandwiches and drinks in Coquitlam. I like how to can find classic pizzas and some creative ones on the menu.

Assembli is a new restaurant that lets you create your own pizza or salads at one set price rather than annoying add ons that will cost you. I was invited to come try a few of their creations to see how they differentiate themselves among the other restaurants in the area.

Interior

When you get here, you can walk up to the counter to put in your order and then pick up on the side.

You can watch them put your order together so there isn’t any secrets to what goes into your meal. They use fresh, non-GMO, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, and local and organic when possible.

Pizza

You can create your own pizza or you can get choose their pre-built pizzas with suggested toppings. It’s a good option if you are particular about what item goes on your pizza.

Of all of the pizza’s, I really enjoyed the Smoke and Fire Pizza, which has pepperoni, smoked cheddar, mozzarella, banana peppers, red onion, and a spicy tomato sauce. I like it hot.

Salad

When it comes to salads, I like to create my own since I’m a bit particular about what I put in it. Similarly to the pizza, you can choose pre-built versions or create your own. If I had to choose one of their salads, it would be the O-Mega Braniac Salad with mixed greens, quinoa, cucumber, cabbage, blueberries, beets, avocado salsa, walnuts, seed mix, and glory dressing. Very filling and packed with great ingredients.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a place with build your own pizza or salad, check Assembli out on Cambie Street. It’s a pretty busy place for lunch as it’s unique in this neighbourhood. Imagine it like a Chipotle but for pizza and salad.

Goldies Pizza has opened their latest location in International Village Mall near Chinatown and Gastown. They are best known for their cheap and delicious thin crust pizza. Anyone that has been out late at night in Vancouver has probably been here after a few drinks.

Interior

The interior is small and gets busy later in the evening. There are a few tables and some large booths to sit in. You can eat in or do take out.

Pizza

They sell pizza by the slice and larger sizes of pizza. When we were here, they had a $2 price for all slices as they are newly opened. This was available for pepperoni, cheese and Hawaiian. Since we ate at 2 restaurants before coming here, we opted for a few slices.

We all had one slice each, but it was so good and only $2. The thin crust was very nice and crisp.

After getting the first slice, we ended up getting more. The second slice was bigger and the crust was a bit more charred, but that was ok because it was equally as tasty. If I’m looking for some good pizza that is cheap, I’ll stop at Goldies Pizza in the future.

Sangiovese Tollo is their signature red wine pairs very well with their pasta and pizza dishes.

bibo-13

Pizza Crudo has fresh tomato, mozzarella, Parma prosciutto, arugula,  and Parmigiano Reggiano. Very fresh ingredients on top and I love the prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano.

bibo-12

Pizza Diavola has tomato, mozzarella, and pepperoni. Nice and meaty. I like the parts of the pepperoni that get crisp on the edge.

bibo-10

Pizza margherita has tomato, mozzarella, and basil. A nice char on the pizza and crunchy crust. I love a good simple pizza. One of my favourites.

Handmade pasta

bibo-9

Ravioli ricotta e spinaci has handmade ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach, served with Italian datterini tomato sauce. Large pieces of ravioli and tastes good.

bibo-1-2

Gnocchi alla Tirolese has handmade gnocchi with speck, radicchio, gorgonzola, and sprinkled with walnuts. I felt this dish was pretty rich and heavy. It’s best shared with a group rather eating it all yourself.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-1

Pizza Hut Canada had their promotion for 5 cheese stuffed crust pizza and if you got a medium or large, they would also stuff it with bacon.

M saw this online and he just had to make me try it. Of course I never say no, since I love all types of food even fast food…especially fast food.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-2

We got the medium Pepperoni Lover’s, which has extra pepperoni and cheese. It’s such has the classic pizza topping that you can’t go wrong with. I try to avoid veggies with my pizza.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-3

As for the stuffed crust, it was pretty hollow and needed more cheese stuffed inside. Maybe 5 cheeses wasn’t enough to fill the cavity. Other areas had more cheese that others. The bacon also wasn’t stuffed inside, it was more on the edge of the toppings area and the crust.

This was just my experience, but maybe at other locations its done better.

grotto-1

Grotto is an Italian restaurant near English Bay in Vancouver. It’s a bit easy to miss when on Davie Street since it’s not on ground level. It’s a bit under ground level kinda like a basement.

I bought their Groupon deal months ago and like usual, I wait till the last day to redeem it. It was $59 for $100 value for four people. I made reservations ahead of time and same with a few of our friends.

grotto-2

Walking into the space, it was dark and has an intimate feel. They have pretty good daily specials. It was Sunday, so a lot of people were here later in the evening for their beer and pizza special.

Antipasti

grotto-5

Pork Belly has white balsamic, orange syrup, frisee, pickled mustard seed and crispy artichoke. Nice, fatty and crisp on the outside.

grotto-6

Humboldt squid also has housemade sausage, roasted eggplant, olives, tomatoes, lemon and parsley. I found that the grilling method made the squid a bit bitter.

Pizza

grotto-3

Funghi Pizza has a white sauce, mushrooms, roasted garlic and topped with arugula. The texture of the pizza was quite interesting. It is thin crust but very crisp and delicate. The crust reminded me of pita chips. Definitely unique as I’ve haven’t encountered another pizza place with such a crisp pizza base.

grotto-4

Prosciutto Pizza has mozzarella and figs with the similar crisp pizza base. It was good as well, but the funghi had a lot more flavours that I enjoyed.

Mains

grotto-7

Pappardelle has braised beef, red wine jus, confit cipolli onion, green peas, bone marrow, and focaccia. I love the large piece of bone marrow on top. A nice touch.

grotto-8

Gnocchi has smoked chicken, pork belly, mushroom ragout, and crispy celery root. The pork belly was the same as the pork belly antipasti. The gnocchi was nice and fluffy.

Overall, the food here was good and filling.

Fig and Goat Cheese Salad is one of their most popular salads. It has assorted greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, goat cheese, black mission fig dressing and Vancouver grown sunflower sprouts. It is also served with flatbread on the side. Nice fresh salad with just the right amount of dressing.

Naturally Meaty Traditional Flatbread Pizza has organic tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy certified organic ground beef, kale, Italian sausage, shaved red onions, roma tomatoes, herbs and asiago cheese.

It has a nice thin crust and crisp on the outer edges, but the centre of it seemed a bit droopy. There wasn’t a lot of beef or sausage on top which I was a tad disappointed in. Despite that, they did balance the amount of toppings on the pizza so its not overly loaded.

Italian Fennel Sausage Artisan Flatbread Pizza is 10 inches and is bigger than their traditional flatbread pizzas.

It has organic tomato sauce, roasted local red bell peppers, Italian sausage, roasted garlic cloves, semi-dried roma tomatoes, caramelized red onions, Mozzafina Di Latte and Goat Cheese.

When we picked up a slice, all the toppings just slid off. The flatbread didn’t told all the toppings in place. The peppers seemed to weigh it down.

The pizzas were a hit and a miss. I love that they use local and organic ingredients, which made the meal a lot healthier that a regular pizza. I just felt the flat bread wasn’t crisp enough in the centre.

Baked Cheesecake with a Toasted Coconut base was a nice treat to end the meal.

Warm Double Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream was my favourite. You also can’t go wrong with this classic dessert.

The 3 course meal is a good deal since the pizzas are already more than $10.

Heathstone-outer

Hearthstone Pizza is located in Port Coquitlam close to Michaels. They serve up thin crust pizza where you have the choice to build your own with unlimited amounts of toppings for a flat rate.

Heathstone-inner

There are lots of seats in the shop, but all the magic happens up at the front counter.

Heathstone-sauce

You get to choose between 2 sizes – small ( 9 inch – $6.95) or regular (11 inch – $8.95). The ones pictured above are smalls. After you select your dough, you can choose any of their sauces, cheeses, meat and vegetables.

Heathstone-line

Sauce:
red sauce, white sauce, olive oil

Cheeses:
mozzarella, low-fat mozzarella, feta, ricotta, parmesan, blue cheese

Meats:
pepperoni, spicy pepperoni, grilled chicken, ham, meatballs, anchovies, italian sausage, bacon bits

Veggies:
mushrooms, pineapples, spinach, garlic, red onions, green onion, black olives, tomatoes, banana peppers, red peppers, green peppers, basil, jalapeno, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, zucchini, onions, capers, cilantro

Post-bake sauces:
pesto, hot sauce, EVOO, roasted red peppers, black pepper, BBQ sauce

Heathstone-toppings

They evenly distribute the toppings so each slice will have a taste of each topping. We piled on a lot of toppings, but they did a good job making sure it would still be enjoyable without a mound of toppings.

Heathstone-oven

Once its all put together, you get to sit back, relax, and watch your pizza bake in the 600 degree open hearth wood stone oven. It takes about 4 minutes to bake.

Heathstone-pizzas

Once it comes out of the oven, the crust is crispy with a slight char. You can ask them to have less char, but we asked them to keep it in longer so it can get really crispy. I love a good crispy crust.

Heathstone-meatlovers

Meat Lover pizza has pepperoni, meatballs, mozzarella and red sauce. It could have used a bit more meat, but if you overload it with toppings, the centre will go limp and soggy.

I like their signature pizza selection since you don’t have to build it yourself. I am indecisive sometimes, so it stresses me out building a pizza since I don’t really know what would go together.

Heathstone-margheta

Margherita Pizza has tomatoes, garlic, basil, mozzarella, and red sauce. We chose this as it is always a good baseline of how a pizza tastes. Of course it isn’t an authentic margherita pizza, but it was ok. I wasn’t a fan of the tomato slices.

Heathstone-custom

This pizza was made by Sherman, he went with white sauce, mozzarella, blue cheese, chicken, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, artichokes, basil, bacon bits, and pesto. This combination was a lot better than what I built, I think because of the white sauce.

Heathstone-pesto-artochoke

I went with the red sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, Italian sausage, mushrooms, pesto, meatballs and olive oil.

Overall, I enjoyed the pizza. I’m a sucker for thin crispy pizza. It’s not authentic Neapolitan pizza, but they aren’t trying to be like that. I enjoyed the experience and it was good. I can imagine it would be fun bringing kids here so they can build their own meal with all the silly topping combinations that they can come up with.

I haven’t been to a Little Caesar’s in over 10 years. I usually go for any pizza place that delivers, since Little Caesar’s doesn’t do delivery, I never eat their pizza. M was intrigued to try Little Caesar’s again since he hasn’t had it in a long time as well.

Bacon Wrapped Deep!Deep! Dish Pizza is what we ordered. At the location we went to, it’s $13.99 for a large size. The order was ready in seconds as the only had to pull it out of their oven. I was quite impressed since I thought I had to wait a while for the pizza to be ready…thus their slogan – Hot-N-Ready.

little-caesars-ourder

We added a combo with crazy bread, dip and a 2L pop for an extra $5.

Bacon Wrapped Deep!Deep! Dish Pizza comes with 8 squares. There is lots of cheese piled on top with pepperoni and bacon bits. Along the edges of the pizza, you will find 3.5 feet of bacon wrapped around the crust.

The bacon is a bit thin on the edges, but it does maintain its crispiness. Since it’s so thin, it doesn’t add too much flavour to it. Mostly texture. The whole pizza was pretty awesome, but we did find it quite oily. You’ll need a few napkins to keep your hands clean.

little-caesars-slice

For $13.99 for just the pizza, it’s so much cheaper than the other pizza joints in town. You really get value.

little-caesars-bread-sticks

The Crazy Bread dipped in the marinara sauce was great as well. Lots of cheese and butter smothered each bread stick.

Overall, I did enjoy it. It’s even better when you have leftovers the next day. A good item to bring to a party.
