Category

The Greek has opened their latest location in the heart of Gastown. The other locations are in Yaletown and North Vancouver. I’ve been to the Yaletown location several times and it’s always a hit! We were excited to check out this location as it’s in a great neighbourhood and it needs some Greek Cuisine to spice up the area.

We were invited to give their dinner menu a try.

Interior

The space is big and looks beautiful. They even have a loft area upstairs if you want a private area for larger groups.

The feel is very young and modern. Loud with pop music and doesn’t fell very Greek until the food arrives.

Menu

Sangria

Sangria is perfect for the Summer. It was very delicious with lots of fruity notes and not too alcoholic tasting. Refreshing!

Karpouzi

This is a watermelon Mojito and it is a light and refreshing beverage as well. Very light on the alcohol taste and not too sweet.

Dip Taster

The dip taster is a great item to order for the table especially when you want to try more of the dips. It has tzatziki, taramasalata, and homous. It comes with a bunch of pita bread on the side for all the dipping fun.

Of the 3 flavours, we really enjoyed the tzatziki as we enjoyed the fresh taste of the cucumber paired with the smooth yogurt. The homous for us was a bit on the sour side.

Octopothi

This dish has grilled octopus, olive oil, a lemon caper dressing and crispy potatoes. It was definitely a comforting dish with the tender octopus and potatoes. We did find the potato was a touch greasy, perhaps from the added olive oil. Parts of the dish a bit charred and sour for our liking but it was still overall a good dish.

Ianis Prawns

This dish has sauteed mushrooms and prawns in a tomato feta ouzo sauce served with pita bread. It was a delicious dish and super yummy. There were about 5 prawns in the dish.

Souvlaki

This dish is served Kalamata style on pita and tzatziki on the side. You can choose a few different meat options – pork, chicken, prawn, wild salmon or beef tenderloin. We went with the pork and beef. It was pretty damn juicy and tender. Both were delicious but pork won by a slight margin. Highly recommended.

Pidakia

This lamb chop dish was amazing as well. Really tasty, tender and all around good. Highly recommended!

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed our dinner at The Greek in Gastown. It’s a beautiful space and the food is very comforting. We were really impressed with their meat dishes. They also have a very affordable happy hour with a great selection of items, so we’ll definitely be back to check that out as well.

Hydra Estiatorio Mediterranean & Bar is a Mediterranean Dining & Cafe Destination at the EXchange Hotel in Downtown Vancouver right in the Financial District. They have just opened their doors at the end of May and are giving locals and visitors a Mediterranean escape in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

Vancouver does have Mediterranean restaurants but Hydra is putting a unique elevated twist to old classics. Hydra Estiatorio’s menu can best be described as a refined elevation of Greek cuisine with succulent fish and seafood options, including whole grilled Branzino, ceviche, grilled octopus and chilled seafood platters. Other Mediterranean favorites such as Forno-roasted leg of lamb, linguini in lobster sauce, grilled vegetables, and tomato salad are paired with impeccable service, family-style dining and exciting tableside food preparations.

We were invited for a sneak peek of their space as well as a taste of their menu.

Interior

The dining room is complete with cascading sheers, rich leather banquettes, ancient olive oil casks, and a central marble bar boasting a unique “fish scale” tile motif. Decorating one long venetian plastered wall is a large-scale “wave painting” by the famed Greek artist Antoni Titakis.

There are two elevated VIP dining booths are illuminated by spectacular custom made Scabetti chandeliers of swirling schools of fish, made of fine bone china circling a warm central light.

Hydra Bar

Hydra Bar aims to elevate the art of the cocktail, with a creative approach to making and shaking unbelievable drinks with a vision that is sexy and unique.

The cocktails on the menu are based on a love of mixology, balance, seasonality, natural flavours, and most importantly fresh, high-quality ingredients with a Mediterranean flair.

The Wet Bar

There is a wet bar area at the rear of the restaurant featuring bar-style seating as well as the fish available for the day. You can come up and choose which fish you want for dinner.

The Cabana (Private Room)

This exclusive private dining cabana is complete with luxuriously flowing sheers, terrazzo stone floors, comfortable lounge-style furniture and hand-blown glass lanterns can be reserved for the evening, offering views of the 60-foot atrium and bustling Pender Street. It can seat up to 30 people.

It’s quite nice, so I can see it will be great for events and celebrations where you want a bit more privacy.

Menu

Spreads

What better way to start off the meal than with some freshly grilled pita bread and dips. There are 6 spreads to choose from and are best shared among the table.

Melitzana: This is a traditional spread made of eggplant with hints of smokiness, garlic, olive oil and lemon.

Tarama: This was our favourite spread made out of tarama, salted fish roe mixed with olive oil, lemon juice, and a smooth potato base. Highly recommend this one. We loved the smooth texture and the saltiness from the fish roe.

Fava: This is made with a base of yellow split peas blended with olive oil and charred onions. Then it is topped with capers and sun-dried tomatoes.

Xtipiti: a classic spicy feta cheese spread with hints of green chilli, chilli flakes, extra virgin olive oil and lemon. It was good and not too spicy at all, my second favourite spread.

Tzatziki: This is a Greek staple. It is made of creamy Greek yogurt mixed with cucumber, garlic, salt and olive oil.

Menta: This has feta cheese smothered and blended with mint and lemon. Very refreshing.

The image below was just a sampling of the different flavours, but the real portion size is the image above.

Mediterrini

This has cucumber-infused grey goose vodka, mint-infused noilly prat dry, and orange bitters.

Italian Bramble

This zero-proof mocktail is made with soda and fresh vibrant berries. It’s a very refreshing beverage and I quite enjoyed it.

Wine

The meal does pair well with wine. They have a good selection of local as well as imported Greek wines. You can ask the staff about their wines and they can guide you through some good options on the menu.

Kefaloraviera

Kefaloraviera is cheese saganaki on a hot skillet served with lemon wedges. How can you go wrong with deep-fried cheese. The lemon cuts through the oiliness of it and its so comforting and warm. Great item to share.

Hydra Special

This dish has deep-fried paper thin zucchini and eggplant and paired with tzatziki. The chips are so crunchy and goes so well with the tzatziki. Highly recommended.

Grilled Octopus

The grilled octopus is paired with lemon, oregano, olive oil and a fava bean purée. I love octopus but I felt it to be too charred for my liking. The charred taste just overpowered this whole dish.

Organic Heirloom Beets

If you love beets, you’ll love this appetizer made of heirloom leafy beet, red-wine vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil. Very bright, vibrant and full of flavours.

Tomato Salad

More of a Mediterranean salad as it has vine-riped tomatoes, cucumber, olives, red onions and feta. I liked this salad too.

Green Salad

This has hearts of romaine, scallions, dill, and their hydra vinaigrette. The Green Salad is one of the more basic salads compared to the other two and my least favourite.

Forno Roasted Whole Leg of Lamb

Well, isn’t this a beauty? The whole leg of lamb is marinated with oregano and lemon. It is carved in the kitchen and served with its natural drippings, seasoning, grilled lemon and roasted garlic.

Really delicious and good for sharing with a large group.

Whole Forno Roasted Chicken

The chicken is marinated with herbs and lemon. It is then served with grilled lemons, roasted garlic and its juices. There were some parts that were dry, but the dark meat was juicy.

Whole Fish in Sea Salt

You can choose from their daily fresh selection of seafood from the Aegean & Salish Seas and world’s oceans, on display at the Raw Bar. You just pay the market price for it.

You can get it prepared and baked in the oven with herbs and sea salt. They prepare this tableside as you watch the staff debone the fish in front of you.

It is served with greek fried potatoes and sautéed greens.

Grilled Whole Fish

Alternatively, you can get the fish grilled instead of packed in sea salt. It is also served with greek fried potatoes and sautéed greens. Delicious!

Sauteed Greens
Greek Fried Potatoes

Lobster Pasta

This has a whole lobster on top of fresh pasta, tomato, ouzo, and lobster sauce. One of the favourite dishes of the night. The lobster was cooked nicely and the claw meat was massive. There was lots of flavour in the sauce as well.

Cream of the Crop

This has a lemon custard stuffed meringue, praline sponge and a mandarin & blood orange caramel. I was very impressed by the meringue and it wasn’t too sweet at all.

Bougatsa

This was my favourite dessert! It has semolina custard, caramel-chocolate ganache, and cinnamon-icing sugar. It is served tableside and it’s fun to see them prepare this in front of you.

We ended the night off with a shot of Greek Espresso. You can have it with or without sugar. You have to wait till the grounds settle to the bottom and the you can fully enjoy. It was very smooth and delicious. A good way to end the dinner with coffee, chats, and good company.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I love the dinner concept. They have a lot of the dishes meant to be shared in large groups. The tableside serve is a nice touch and I can see this being a place were a lot of people celebrate special occasions.

If you’re in a small group or just dining by yourself, the downstairs Hydra cafe is open for smaller bites, drinks, happy hour, and breakfast which is great.

The Greek by Anatoli in Yaletown has just introduced Happy Hour and we were given a sneak peek into what customers would have on the menu. Some dishes in this review aren’t the right sizing for happy hour and may be a bit smaller.

From Monday March 27 -31 2pm – 5pm, the Happy Hour food items will be only $2 and then they go back to regular price. A pretty good deal since you really can’t get anything for $2 these days.

The hours are a bit hard to make if you work 9-5 Downtown, other happy hour places end at 6pm.

They also have 12oz 1516 Lager for $4, Glass of Anatoli Meritage or Viognier for $6 or a Ouzo shot for $4. A good way to start the evening with some drinks and food.

Keftedes

These are traditional pan-fried meatballs served in tomato sauce. The meatballs were moist and full of flavour and the tomato sauce worked well.

Homous

There is chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and parsley served with a side of pita bread. The portion is a little bit different than this image as they gave us more to share. A good item to fill up on and the homous is delicious.

Dolmathes

These are grape vine leaves stuffed with beef and rice, cooked in avgolemono broth which is a egg-lemon sauce. I love this stuff. It’s so good but I know some people don’t like it.

Spanakopita

This was everyone’s favourite. This portion is actually 2. It has spinach, feta and herbs, wrapped in filo and baked. It comes with a Tzatziki Sauce on the side. I loved every part of this dish from the flakey filo to that Tzatziki sauce.

“True Greek Pork” Souvlaki

The Souvlaki is served kalamaki style on pita bread with a side of tzatziki. It was really good, but then again when is pork not delicious? It was seasoned well, but had a slight toughness about them.

Calamari

It’s classic, crispy and served with a side of lemon and tzatziki. An item that will definitely be very popular. It was really good and I would order it again.

Greek Salad

This items isn’t on the happy hour menu, but sometimes you need veggies. It has fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, feta from Greece, capers and olives.

Mythos Beer

Mythos is a Greek Lager Beer. It is light, refreshing and pairs well with the food.

Anatoli Caesar

The caesar is garnished with a pickled bean, lime, a grilled prawn and a rim of salt and pepper. The drink looked great, but it needed more spice and heat to this drink. I like my caesars hot, but I could mostly taste vodka.

Karpouzi Watermelon Basil Mojito

Outside of the happy hour dishes and drinks, there were a few different items we tried like this Watermelon Mojito. Very refreshing and perfect for the warmer weather.

Final Thoughts

It was good to see what their happy menu has. Although it’s not extensive, it has a good amount of dishes that would keep customers happy. I do love good cheap food especially during happy hour.

Maria's Taverna

I’ve always found Greek cuisine to be quite hard to please my appetite since it is always a bit expensive and not sure what to order except for the usual Chicken Souvlaki. We asked TractorDean to take us to his go-to Greek Restaurant. When in doubt, as a Greek person to take  you to a Greek Restaurant. They always know best!

Maria's Taverna

We all ordered a bunch of items to share and we were not disappointed.

Maria's Taverna

Complementary Pita bread and Tzatziki arrive at the table. You can ask for more pita bread at no extra cost.

Maria's Taverna

Saganaki ($7.95) is pan-fried goat cheese with lemon. It comes on a hot skillet and is SO delicious! The nuttiness of the cheese and the lemon is addicting.

 Maria's Taverna

Spanakopita ($7.50) is a spinach and feta pie wrapped in phyllo pastry. It comes with a side of tzatziki sauce. We thought this item was very delicate and crisp on the outside with the savory filling inside.

Maria's Taverna

Kalamari ($10.95) is deep-fried marinated squid with tzatziki sauce. The batter is light and crispy, but could have used a bit more salt to enhance the flavours.

Maria's Taverna

Kelftiko ($17.95) has a generous potion of lamb shoulder in their special rub. It comes with rice, greek salad and potatoes. It wa so delicious! The meat was very flavourful and tender. This is a must order item.

Overall, the experience was great and the food was very delicious. The interior space is very cramped and not a lot of room to move around. The service was decent and nothing much to really fuss about. It’s a good idea to stray away from the usual items and be a bit more adventurous. I know it’s kinda hard to do that at a Greek restaurant since some items are pretty pricey.

M took me to Paros Taverna, a Greek restaurant on North Road in Coquitlam. M had no idea what to expect since we just went there randomly. A year ago, I remember staring at their windows and I was so creeped out. I was sitting at the McDonalds across the street and I saw 2 men at a table getting charmed by a belly dancer. I was very confused.

The interior is pretty dark and it gets darker as the evening continues. At one point of the evening the lights go super dim and the music gets pretty loud…. then this man and this belly dancer dances around the restaurant to entertains all their diners. You can even tip the belly dancer to give you an extra personal dance. It was really awkward to watch. A lot of people seemed to enjoy it though.

Saganaki ($9) is Kefalotyri cheese pan fried, served hot with half lemon & pita.

This is my favorite item to get at any Greek restaurant. Who doesn’t love fried cheese? You need to squeeze the lemon on top of the cheese to taste good. The clothe surrounding it just catches all the seeds and pulp. Then you cut a piece off and put it on the pita bread and enjoy.

I really liked it because you get the nutty ooey gooey cheese with a hint of the sourness from the lemon.

Paros Platter for 2 ($31) comes with chicken souvlaki, prawn souvlaki, kalamaria, dolmades, pita bread, greek salad, rice, potatoes & spanakopita. We thought it was one of the items that had decent pricing

.

Chicken souvlaki was a tad on the dry side, but you do get a lot on a skewer.

Prawn souvlaki was alright, but it seemed like it was frozen ahead of time and then cooked. Maybe I’m wrong, but it did have a bit of a tough texture.

Kalamaria is piled up in the middle of the dish. It was decent, but it wasn’t mind blowing.

Dolmades is rice and other vegetables stuffed in edible leaves. It tasted good!

Spanakopita is phyllo pastry stuffed with spinach and feta cheese. It comes with 2 triangular pieces. The outside was quite crispy and delicious inside.

The pita is the same that comes with saganaki.

The potatoes and the rice will surely fill 2 people up! This is the hefty starch portion of the platter. Good flavour and it’s always better with more lemon!

The greek salad was decent too. Since there was also a lemon with this too, it seems fitting to use that too. hahaha.

Overall, the experience was very interesting. The platter is a good choice to get a feel of a wide range of items from this place.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Platter is pretty goof choice
  • Dinner experience may contain belly dancers
  • Lots of Parking

Nu Greek Street is a Street Cart spin off of Nu Restaurant. It is on the corner of Granville and Georgia. They specialize in a few traditional Greek items. When I walked up to the cart, one of the guys operating the cart looked familiar.  So, to not embarrass myself, I just ordered, but then he gave me a strange look and it seems like the Ip brothers are back at it again! First it was the PanDa Fresh Bakery, then the Lullys Sandwich Bar, and now Nu Greek Street.

The cart serves up souvlaki and sides such as Greek Salad, tzatziki and hummus.

I ordered the Grilled Chicken Souvlaki Pita ($6.50). The pita is so delicious! Lightly grilled and crispy with a nice buttery salt taste. It is loaded up with onions, tomatoes, a skewer of chicken and a generous helping of tzatziki.

This was surprisingly not messy at all! The chicken was charred on the outside, but it gave it such an amazing flavour! It really made me want some more, but I really had to control myself. You must get this!!!

Next I had the Greek Salad ($4). It’s the traditional greek salad you would see with peppers, cucumbers, onions, olives, tomatoes, feta cheese and a nice light sauce. This tasted pretty average, but I really did not like the large chunks of onions, it made me feel like I had super bad breath during lunch. I think if they had smaller pieces  of onions, it would be better.

Overall, pretty solid main item – Grilled Souvlaki Pita. Quick, fast and super delicious!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Grilled Souvlaki Pita is the way to go!!
  • Decently priced
  • Not messy when eating on the go

It was divaD’s 22nd Birthday and he held his birthday at Felico’s! The name Felico’s rang a bell but I really couldn’t point my finger where I heard of it before. After Googling the name of the restaurant, it is the really posh looking Greek restaurant near Parker Place. Every time I pass by, I point at it and tell someone I want to go there, but I keep forgetting about it. Today was the day I would FINALLY get to try it out.

The interior is very nice and you can even reserve private areas for parties. They have a lot of space and many many tables. It’s a really large restaurant.

The menu may seem a bit expensive at first glance but you can find some decent dishes between $14 to $18.

The bread is just toasted pita bread with butter.

TaiwaneseGirl and KoreanBoy ordered the Kalamaria ($14.95). It has  deep-fried squid served with satziki, roast potatoes, rice, and greek salad.

M ordered the Chicken Parmesan ($15.95). It has breaded chicken breast baked in tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, served with linguine noodles and seasonal vegetables

Jojocake ordered the Chicken Linguine ($15.95). There are pieces of chicken breast, fresh mushrooms, parmesan cheese and you get to choose what type of sauce you want on it. She chose the creamy pesto sauce to go with it.

She loved the sauce, but the chicken was really really dry.

KoreanGirl ordered the Seafood Linguine ($17.95). It has salmon, halibut, prawns, scallops, onion, and fresh mushrooms. Just like JojoCake, she also ordered the creamy pesto sauce.

She ALSO had the same problem with her scallops… dry dry dry. They sauce was still enjoyable.

I ordered the Combination Plate ($18.95). It comes with kalamaria, dolmades, keftedes, spanakopita, homous, satziki, and greek salad. I ordered this because I really wanted to try all the different things on the menu.

I liked the kalamaria and the spanakopita. I was not a fan of the dolmades. Dolmades are Grape vine leaves stuffed with rice and and ground sirloin.I have never had it before, but it reminded me of another variation of sticky rice.

The Keftedes are Ground sirloin meatballs with onion. I found the keftedes to be a bit bland. The greek salad was ok as well, I wish there was more salad dressing and more acidic tasting.

The food was pretty average and it was not spectacular. It was probably because of what we ordered. Overall, we still had a great time, divaD got some nasty tasting shots and Felico’s handled the Birthday party really nicely. Everyone’s food came almost at the exact same time. We did have to wait a little bit longer, but it was good how everyone got their dishes at the same time.

  • Free Parking in the back
  • Walkable distance from Parker Place, Lansdowne, and Aberdeen Mall

Stepho’s Greek Taverna on Davie Street has been a really popular restaurant in Vancouver for their affordable greek food.

I have always had the misconception that greek food in Vancouver is fairly expensive. When I eat Greek food in Burnaby, an entree would cost anywhere from $15 – $20. BUT, at Stepho’s, you can have large portions for under $10. This is the reason why Stepho’s is always packed with customers during lunch and dinner time.

When we arrived at 5pm, we thought it shouldn’t be very busy, but there there was already a line up and most of the tables were full. Since it was just M and I, we quickly found a table for 2. Despite the large size of the interior and several tables, it was all full.

The menu comprises of the usual greek dishes you would find any other restaurant, but for way cheaper.

I enjoy playing with candles….so if you are a waitress or a waiter and you see the candles are messed up….ya…it was me. Stepho’s does not use traditional candles, like many other restaurants, they have adopted to use the electronic candles to simulate the same feeling. It took me a while to figure out why the candle did not feel hot.

We ordered the Saganaki ($4.95) for an appetizer. Saganaki is essentially fried cheese. I know it sounds grotesquely fatty….very fatty, but something about melted cheese just makes your heart melt every single time. Maybe it’s just me…but I would kill for melted cheese on any type of bread.

For the Saganaki, it came with a pita bread cut in half. We divided up the cheese and put it on our half of the pita bread. Since it is fried, you get a bit of “ooey gooey” and crispiness to the cheese.

If you are watching your weight, this is probably not a good appetizer.

M ordered the Roast Lamb Platter ($9.95). It came with a Roast Lamb, Greek Salad, Vegetable stew, Roast Potato, Rice Pilaf, Pickled Jalapeno, and a lemon. M devoured the greek salad, it was loaded with Feta cheese. The roast lamb was very flavourful, tender and succulent. It was not dry at all. The meat fell off the bone easily. He also enjoyed the rice since it was flavourful.

I ordered the Small Chicken Slouvaki ($7.95). It came with tzatziki sauce, greek salad, roast potatoes, Rice Pilaf, Pickled Jalapeno, lemon wedge, and a skewer of chicken.

This was a small…I can’t imagine how large, the large size would be. I enjoyed the rice pilaf, greek salad, tzatziki sauce, and the roasted potatoes. One thing I didn’t like was how dry and burnt tasting the chicken skewer was.

We also got more pita bread with our entrees.

Overall, we both had a good experience. The portions were large and at an affordable price. Don’t expect to have the best tasting greek food at Stepho’s, but one thing is for sure…you will be full.  The service on the other hand was not great, we often felt rushed with our meal. We spent a total of 35 minutes at Stepho’s. It’s either we eat fast, or they were trying to get us out as fast as possible.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Limited Parking in the rear
  • Street Meter parking in the front
  • Long line ups during peak hours
  • Large portions for under $10

Little Billys Steak House is a gem that is hidden in North Burnaby near SFU. They specialize in steaks, seafood and traditional greek dishes.

One thing I really don’t like about this place is the very very cramped entrance to the restaurant. When you are with a group of 6 waiting for your table to be set up, you are literally standing next to the person seated at the bar. I took this shot from the back of the restaurant.

To start off a nice meal, I decided to try Becks beer ($5.75) and my grandfather got a Heineken ($5.75). Both beers were good, I wish they would fill it up closer to the top of the glass. I probably got 1/5th less.

My little sister got a shirley temple. It’s grenadine, 7 up, OJ and some cherries. Very delicious and great for kids. It’s not on the menu, but they can practically make anything.

Depending on what you order, they will give you a green salad with balsamic vingar or a greek salad. They both taste really good and fresh. You won’t be disappointed with either. These come included in your meal, just read the menu and it should say which one is included.

My grandfather ordered the Lamb Chops ($24). It had about 5 or 6 lamb chops with vegetables, rice, tzatziki , and potato. The lamb chop was very soft a tender and not tough at all.

My mother had the Halibut ($25). It is a pan seared halibut fillet with a Greek style lemon butter sauce. It also came with vegetables and potato. $25 for this was quite expensive but my mother seemed to like it.

My dad had the 9oz Beef Tenderloin ($30), it comes with vegetables, and your choice of either a baked potato, mashed potatoes or fries. He chose the baked potato, which you could add on sour cream, chives and bacon. It was delicious and cooked right at medium. My little sister even stole a few bites off his plate.

WorkingGirl has had the Paidakia Ribs ($24) a few times and this time, the quality has gone down. They use to be very plump and large. This time, it looked very small and thin like a starving animal. It also comes with potato, rice, tzatziki and grilled vegetables. She really hated the potato since it was very lemony and not potato-like. I guess its the greek way of making potatoes.

I got the roast lamb ($21). It is a marinated lamb shoulder baked in a special mustard sauce. It was very tender, and the meat fell off the bones nicely. I know the picture looks very ugly, but it was delicious. In contrast to WorkingGIrl, I did like the potato since it was not bland and boring like regular potatoes.

My little sister had the gorgonzola Mac and Cheese. They were very accommodating when making her meal. My little sister doesn’t eat a lot, so they can do half orders of most items on their menu. She loves Mac and Cheese, so she chose this option. But, the waiter suggested different types of cheeses since gorgonzola is a type of pungent mouldy cheese. In the end, we got Cheddar/Mozzarella Mac & Cheese (Half order), which came out to be $7. The noodles of the mac and cheese are not the usual tube shapes, they are curly!!

At the end of the meal, they give everyone mint chocolates. I love these more than mints or mints with chocolate in the middle.

After tax and tip, this whole meal came to about $170.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Amazing servers that are helpful
  • Make reservations to avoid waits
  • Meals can be customizable and have half orders
  • Expensive for dinner time
