Pidgin is back for Dine Out Vancouver 2020 with a 6 course menu for $45. The meal is shared family style and they have an omnivore and vegetarian option available. The 6 dishes are shared among a minimum of 2 people. They regular menu is also available during this time.

Omnivore Menu

Vegetarian Menu

Interior

Whether you are with a small or large group, the space is very inviting. In the evening, its dim inside and sets the mood.

Fried Brussel Sprouts

The mean starts off with pickled turnips, miso dressing, fennel and caraway salt, and a brown butter crumb. Very delicious and I just love the miso dressing with the brown butter crumb.

Tuna Tartare

The next dish is paired with pickled mustard seeds, mentaiko mayo, shallots, chives, shiso, and lotus root chips. With all the other ingredients in this tuna tartare, the flavour of the tuna itself blended in the background so all you can really taste was the dominant mentaiko mayo.

Cultivated Mushrooms

This dish was my favourite of the night since I absolutely adore mushrooms and eggs. There is yuzu-soy brown butter, truffle celeriac puree and a ramen egg. It was very delicious with a lot of umami but it was a touch salty.

Sablefish

The sablefish is surrounded by a seafood dashi, side stripe prawns, shoyu dashi, potato, wakame, and enoki. The sablefish was undercooked so the centre of it was still raw. Besides that, the dashi broth was very nice.

Magret Duck Breast

This has a hoisin glaze and it is paired with radish cake and Chinese greens. The duck breast was beautifully cooked and it is a great melding of Asian and French cultures in this dish. The radish cake was a bit on the salty side as well. The duck was well rendered and flavourful.

Yuzu Creme Brulee

For dessert, the yuzu creme brulee also has sudachi pepper, and candied castelvetrano olives. I wasn’t a fan of the candied olives.

Beet Tartare

The beet Tartare replaces the tuna tartare on the omnivore menu. this also has mustard seed, celeriac, mirepoix, and lotus chips. I was very surprised by this and absolutely loved it. Well balanced in flavour and would never have thought it would make a great beet tartare.

Vegetable Oden

This dish replaces the Sablefish in the Omnivore menu. There is tofu, cabbage, squash, enoki, wakame, potato, daikon, and garlic oil. This dish has a lot of different components and it is a nice little oden. Different textures work well together.

Carnaroli Risotto

This dish replaces the Magret Duck Breast on the Omnivore Menu. There are sunchokes, miso butter, pecorino, and spruce tip oil. The sunchokes were delicious and was a pretty decent vegetarian risotto.

Drink Pairings

You can add $40 for drink pairings for all 6 dishes which include 2 white wines, 2 sakes, 1 red wine, and 2 cocktails. Not a bad deal for 6 drinks.

If you love a variety of drinks, this is for you. They take a lot of care into pairing each beverage with the dishes.

Oyster Shot

This is an add on item for $4.50 if you choose to add it to your meal. It has a raw oyster on the bottom and topped with a horseradish emulsion, and celery lime granite.

Beef Tendon Chicharron

A lot of work going into these beef tendon chicharron and it shows. It is then topped with gochugaru citrus spice for extra dimension of flavour.

Daily Pickles

For $5 extra, you can get a tasting of their daily pickles that change regularly. It’s nice to munch on them before the meal begins.

Final Thoughts

It’s great they try to keep it as close to their prix-fixe experience where you get to try a variety of items on the menu. The dishes in the omnivore menu had a few technical issues, but the vegetarian was pretty good. They got creative with the dishes and I enjoyed it a lot more.

What sets Pidgin apart is that you get to try 6 dishes instead of the standard 3 for Dine Out. If you want to add more to the menu, they have such a flexible menu for additional add-ons.

Jules Bistro is a French bistro hidden in the heart of Gastown. I’ve passed by so many times that I am shocked I’ve never noticed the place. They have been around since 2007 when Chef Emmanuel Joinville moved to Canada.

On the menu, you’ll notice a mix of classic French flavours with a West Coast twist. They do have classic French dishes and then you’ll notice a good amount of seafood dishes on the menu too using fresh and local ingredients where possible.

We were invited to check out Jules Bistro. The hubby and I decided to make it a date night away from Baby E.

Interior

The space is a good size and they also have a patio outdoors in the front open on nice warm sunny days.

Good for groups too but make sure to reserve ahead of time.

The ambiance is quite nice and during dinner time, I love that they is live piano music that sets the mood.

Menu

Kir Royal

I started with the Kir Royal, which is a classic French cocktail. This has sparkling wine and Creme de Cassis. It is served in a flute and is about 3oz. It was good and I enjoyed it a lot.

Pinot Noir

My husband is into his pinot noir. There is actually a large variety of wine on the menu and can be confusing to navigate. You can ask the staff to help pick the perfect wine for the evening.

Bread and Butter

The bread and butter arrives before the dishes start arriving. It’s pretty decent bread and since we only had a piece each, they suggested we pack it to go as it makes great French Toast for the next morning.

Homemade country style pate

Pate is essentially liver and not for everyone. I like pate but my husband hasn’t taken to liking any pate I’ve made him try. The pate is smooth and full of flavour. It pairs well with the pickled and toasted bread. There’s quite a bit of pate in the dish, so you’ll probably want more bread to spread the pate on.

French Onion Soup

French onion soup is another French classic made of beef broth, onions, and topped with gratinée. It comes out super hot, so make sure it cools down a bit before you dig in. It has a depth of flavour and my husband really enjoyed it.

Dill Marinated Salmon Carpaccio

I decided to go more West Coast with my appetizer and I just can’t resist a good salmon carpaccio. There is lots of fresh dill, red onions, salty capers, and the base of house smoked salmon. I really enjoyed it too.

Ribeye steak

My husband can’t resist a good steak when he sees it on the menu. It is 12oz and he asked it to be cooked medium rare. He also chose to have scalloped potatoes on the side as it was highly recommended.

The steak was cooked perfectly and had so much flavour.

Roasted Rack of Lamb

I was debating if I should go with another more West Coast inspired menu item, but I couldn’t say no to the lamb. It is served with sautéed potatoes and corn. It also has a rosemary jus which was very nice and fragrant.

The lamb was perfectly cooked at medium rare and hit the spot. I wasn’t a fan of the sauteed potatoes and corn. I should have swapped it out for something else or gotten another side.

Melting Chocolate Cake

This is served in this ceramic container with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream on top. It wasn’t what I expected it to be like as we couldn’t see the chocolate batter inside ooze out. It was mostly contained in the container, more like a soup. It did have a nice dark chocolate flavour which was enjoyable.

Latte

I ended off the dessert with a decaffeinated latte. Something about a nice warm latte really readies me for the night. I ate a lot and now it’s time to go home and end the night.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we did enjoy our date night at Jules Bistro. The classic French dishes were great and done very well. I absolutely adore the live piano music to really set the mood during dinner time. The staff are super friendly and very knowledgable about the menu.

If you’re looking for French cuisine that isn’t pretentious, check out Jules Bistro.

Tuc Craft Kitchen opened in Gastown in 2013 and has been serving up their delicious take on comfort food. They pride themselves on serving rustic, seasonal, farm-to-table fare paired with a carefully curated list of New & Old World wines, inventive cocktails, and local craft beer.

We were invited to check out a few of their new Summer menu items.

Interior

I love the space. It’s so rustic and casual. There are 2 levels inside, so if you have a large private party, there is an area upstairs.

If you closely look at the walls, Guy Fieri was here.

Powell St. Swizzle

This drink has Odd Society Oaken gin, Odd Society bittersweet vermouth, Rootside ginger beer, lime and bitters. Very refreshing drink.

Flower of Algernon

This is made of Odd Society Wallflower gin, St. Germaine elderflower liqueur, lavender, grapefruit and lemon. A good combination of flavours especially the elderflower and lavender.

Wines

They have a great wine program at Tuc featuring New and Old World wines. Colin Ross is the Wine Director and Co-owner of Tuc and he can help you pair the perfect wines with your dishes.

Baked Ricotta

This dish has house-made ricotta, warm olives, sheep’s milk parmesan, and bread. Never thought you would bake ricotta and serve it as an appetizer. A good item to share among the table and nibble on before the rest of the meal arrives.

They pair this with the Sperling Vinyards ‘Vision’ 15, which is a Charonnay from the Okanagan Valley.

Sunset Salad

This salad has baby shrimp, strawberries, greens, lemon vinaigrette, and a carrot lime puree. Who knew shrimp and strawberries would go well together? I am a huge fan of shrimp so I enjoyed it in the salad even thought it has a bit of a slimy texture. There is a sweetness in the shrimp so it makes sense.

They pair this with the Culmina ‘Saignée Rosé ’17, a Meritage blend from Golden Mile Bench, BC.

Togarashi Ahi Tuna

This dish has seared Ahi Tuna, tumeric and garlic infused rice noodles, seasonal veggies, and a cilantro dressing. The togarshi on the ahi tuna was delicious! There was a lot of rice noodle that comes in this dish. Good to an individual to eat or even shared among the table.

They pair this with the Bella ‘Buddha’s Blend’ Sparkling Rose ’18, a Gamay and Chardonnary from Okanagan Valley, BC.

Ribs ‘n Fries

The Ribs ‘n Fries has orange and jalapeño glazed side ribs, curly yam fries, and a red slaw. That orange and jalapeño glaze was delicious on the ribs. The curly yam fries were good too.

They pair this with the Anarchist ‘Mayhem’ ’16, a Merlot from Osoyoos, BC.

Lentil Hash Mole Verde

This is a vegetarian black lentils, sweet peas, roasted mushrooms, corn, pea greens. Very filling and the sweetness of the corn and peas pair well with the lentils.

They pair this with the Herdade do Esporão Monte Velho ’16 from Alentejano, PT.

Seafood Étouffée

This has BC mussels & manila clams, prawns, squid, creole tomato sauce, and dirty rice. There is a good amount of seafood in this dish and the spices incorporated into this dish were delicious.

This is paired with the Maetierra Atlantis ’17 from Rías Baixas, ES.

Lemon Pudding Cake

Last but not least, the lemon pudding cake was amazing. It is topped with strawberries, Chantilly cream, fried basil and lemon zest. The cake was soft, moist and full of great flavour. It’s not on the menu, but it really needs to be on the menu.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the food is pretty good and you are sure to find comfort in these dishes. The dishes aren’t too heavy for the summer and they try to use seasonal ingredients in the dishes so you get a taste of what summer has to offer.

PiDGiN has launched their newest Happy Hour menu which happens every day from 5 – 6pm at their bar. A short window of time but there are some good deals especially if you love sake. How can you not if you’re a sake lover?

We were invited for a sneak peek of their happy hour offerings.

Bar

As the happy hour is only offered at the bar, you’ll get a front row seat of the bartending action. One of my favourite places to eat at is the bar because it’s more interactive.

Happy hour is best spent with a friend, drinks and some nibbles.

Menu

Beef Chicharrones

The beef chicharrones were my favourite item on the menu. Simple but the spices that they add on top has a tiny kick of spice, salty, but works well together. It is on the menu with beer and it’s a perfect pairing. The crunchy texture of the chicharrones and the malty effervescent beer.

Yakitori

The yakitori is ordered per piece. You can choose from heart, skin or thighs. They don’t have the deep charcoal flavour in these skewers, but it was well prepared. Surprisingly, the hearts were my favourite. It was tender and quite flavourful. The thighs were tender and very juicy. The skin was ok, but it would have been nice if the fat was rendered a bit more.

Hando Katsu Sando

The katsu and kewpie mayo is sandwiched between milk bread. The katsu reminded me of corned beef that is breaded and deep-fried. The milk bread was very toasty and hard that is was a bit rough on the mouth.

Tempura

The tempura that they had was Shiso Wrapped Rockfish and Prawn and served with ponzu sauce. It was surprisingly really good. I loved the combination and it worked.

Sake Flights

Sake is 50% during this happy hour and they boast a wide selection. Two of my favourites were the:

  • Niwa no Uguisu, Junmai Daiginko
  • Masumi Kippuku Kinju, Junmai Ginjo, Yamahai

I was never into sake but these two were smooth and enjoyed cold.

Final Thoughts

Overall, there are some good bites that go well with beer, wine, cocktails, and sake. The menu isn’t extensive, but there is just enough for happy hour.

The Greek has opened their latest location in the heart of Gastown. The other locations are in Yaletown and North Vancouver. I’ve been to the Yaletown location several times and it’s always a hit! We were excited to check out this location as it’s in a great neighbourhood and it needs some Greek Cuisine to spice up the area.

We were invited to give their dinner menu a try.

Interior

The space is big and looks beautiful. They even have a loft area upstairs if you want a private area for larger groups.

The feel is very young and modern. Loud with pop music and doesn’t fell very Greek until the food arrives.

Menu

Sangria

Sangria is perfect for the Summer. It was very delicious with lots of fruity notes and not too alcoholic tasting. Refreshing!

Karpouzi

This is a watermelon Mojito and it is a light and refreshing beverage as well. Very light on the alcohol taste and not too sweet.

Dip Taster

The dip taster is a great item to order for the table especially when you want to try more of the dips. It has tzatziki, taramasalata, and homous. It comes with a bunch of pita bread on the side for all the dipping fun.

Of the 3 flavours, we really enjoyed the tzatziki as we enjoyed the fresh taste of the cucumber paired with the smooth yogurt. The homous for us was a bit on the sour side.

Octopothi

This dish has grilled octopus, olive oil, a lemon caper dressing and crispy potatoes. It was definitely a comforting dish with the tender octopus and potatoes. We did find the potato was a touch greasy, perhaps from the added olive oil. Parts of the dish a bit charred and sour for our liking but it was still overall a good dish.

Ianis Prawns

This dish has sauteed mushrooms and prawns in a tomato feta ouzo sauce served with pita bread. It was a delicious dish and super yummy. There were about 5 prawns in the dish.

Souvlaki

This dish is served Kalamata style on pita and tzatziki on the side. You can choose a few different meat options – pork, chicken, prawn, wild salmon or beef tenderloin. We went with the pork and beef. It was pretty damn juicy and tender. Both were delicious but pork won by a slight margin. Highly recommended.

Pidakia

This lamb chop dish was amazing as well. Really tasty, tender and all around good. Highly recommended!

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed our dinner at The Greek in Gastown. It’s a beautiful space and the food is very comforting. We were really impressed with their meat dishes. They also have a very affordable happy hour with a great selection of items, so we’ll definitely be back to check that out as well.

Ampersand Bar & Bistro is the newest restaurant in Gastown taking over Mosquito dessert, which quietly closed their doors recently. They specialize in cocktails as well as designer dim sum. Clearly, they are going for more of a high end approach.

We were invited to try their drinks and designer dim sum, but with so many great dim sum restaurants in Metro Vancouver, it’s some tough competition. Given the area of Gastown, there aren’t any dim sum options around unless you head closer to Burrard where there is Kirin or Victoria Chinese Restaurant.

Interior

The interior of Ampersand has stayed unchanged. The space is still small and somewhat cramped due to the layout. It has a dark and intimate feel.

Menu

Ampersand Gin & Tonic

The gorgeous drink is made with butterfly pea flower infused Cascade dry gin, and St Germain Premium Indian Tonic Water. When you pour the 2 liquids together, the colour transforms into a beautiful light purple colour. The taste is of a standard Gin & Tonic, but with a beautiful look.

Rosso Negroni

The Rosso Negroni has Cascade Dry Gin, Sweet Vermouth, Campari, and Cynar. Love how there is one giant ice cube in the drink to keep it cold as you sip away at this drink.

Designer Dim Sum

The designer dim sum is the star of their menu, but it was a total let down. They boast 11 different kind of dim sum items, but a lot of them fell flat in taste and texture. The presentation is beautiful but all of the items are forgettable. After a short while, the skin of the dumplings, no matter which kind got dry and chewy. The crafted sauces and garnishes are mostly for looks and don’t add too much to the flavours of the dumplings.

Coconut Buns

This comes 2 per order and it is topped with Ampersand dulche de leche coconut sauce and coconut almond sesame sprinkle. The dulche de leche sauce was addictive and it kept me wanting more. Unfortunately, the coconut buns were very thick and dense to get into the coconut filling.

Final Thoughts

The designer dim sum was a let down for me as I know there are some stellar dim sum options in Vancouver that just can’t compare. THey do have other menu items that might be better but we didn’t try those. If you’re looking for drinks in Gastown, the space is nice to catch up with friends.

Freshbowl is a family run restaurant with 2 stores in Vancouver. They focus on healthy South East Asian cuisine and put their twist on it so its non-GMO, hormone & antibiotic free, and MSG free. FreshBowl also has vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, organic and natural options available on the menu for those with dietary restrictions.

They also strive to be more green by using a lot of compostable materials to keep waste away from landfills.

I’ve passed by many times before and I always assumed it was a salad bar due to it’s look, but there is nothing but South East Asian cuisine here.

Interior

You order up at the counter and then find a seat to sit at if you’re dining in.

The space isn’t too large, but there are still a decent amount of seats inside for small groups. You can have larger groups here if you come early enough to snag the tables.

Menu

Thai Iced Tea

A classic drink full of flavour and very popular among customers. It tastes very good and has strong bold flavours of the tea. It’s not too sweet compared to other places in town and has a creamy texture because of the milk.

Hibiscus Tea

The hibiscus tea has floral notes, good strong flavour, and a touch of sweetness.

Chicken Laska

You can build your laksa how you want based on the different options on the menu. It was very yummy and tasty, plus the noodles were nice and soft in texture. The laksa is served with veggies including kale, beansprouts, some red cabbage, cucumbers and carrot.

The chicken in this dish are small bite size pieces and is tender, beautifully presented. Can’t go wrong with that laksa broth either. This bowl was devoured quickly and it’s not too large.

Prawn Pad Thai

They use fresh tamarind in the dish and it really shows to build up the flavours. It tasted good but the noodles were broken for some reason. There could have been a touch more acidity in the dish. They also don’t use fish sauce as it’s hard to find one that is preservative free. The prawns are also OceanWise certified.

BANELLA Roti

Eat this when it comes out fresh so the roti stays very crisp. It is made in house with the banana and Nutella filling. There’s not a lot of filling but the flavours are there. It has a good level of sweetness and can be a shared dessert for those who just want a taste.

Final Thoughts

It’s a good option in the area as there aren’t a lot of healthy South East Asian restaurants options around in the area. If you’re looking for something healthy, definitely check out Freshbowl.

Moltaqa Moroccan restaurant is located near Gastown and there aren’t that many Moroccan restaurants in Vancouver. When I saw it, I knew I had to come with my friend for lunch. I love trying out different cuisines and explore cuisines out of the ordinary.

Interior

The interior is nice and I love the window seating as there is so much natural light. The small touches to the interior decor is very nice too.

Lunch Menu

Vegetable Pastilla

This was a dish I had the most issues as this was $15.75 as it has shredded vegetables inside in a Phyllo pastry and topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. This was one of the most expensive dishes and it wasn’t that large either. It’s about the same price as the other dishes. Not recommended.

Chicken Merguez Couscous

This has 2 halal sausage, chicken, and served on a bed of couscous and roasted vegetables. This was one of my favourite dishes as the sauce just brings everything together and the price was very fair for what you get. You will be full from this. Recommended!

Halal Lamb Shank Apricot Tagine

This has seasonal vegetables with the fall off the bone lamb shank. One of their popular items. It also comes with a side of couscous to eat with that delicious sauce. A good hearty meal!

Cumin Lamb and Roasted Vegetables Sandwiches

The sandwich was very good with feta cheese inside, the cumin lamb, and lots of roasted vegetables in the nice bun. Good flavours but we did notice the lamb was a bit on the dry side.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s great to try Moroccan cuisine in Vancouver. There really aren’t that many around, so it was good to try something new. The flavours here were solid but there were a few hits and misses.

Iktsuarpok Coffee Stand is the cutest little coffee shop in Gastown. There are no seats and you just order your drink at the window. Rika and Kento are behind Iktsuarpok Coffee Stand and while we were in line waiting, it was nice to see them chit chatting with us once our order was ready.

We saw them on Instagram and read a few articles online and knew we had to make a visit as their concept was unique.

Menu

The menu is limited with 3 items but you can’t go wrong with them.

White

This is a latte made with Moving Coffee beans, which is from Vancouver too. Milk and espresso never tasted so good. It really hit the spot and the latte art looks great too. Highly recommended.

Green

If you want a matcha latte, they have that too. It’s been pretty popular, so sometimes they run out of it. Be sure to check Instagram to see if it’s available. We initially planned to come here weeks ago but then we noticed they ran out of matcha, so we waited till it was back in stock.

You can ask them to adjust the sweetness or have none at all. The matcha tasted like it was high quality and you can taste it.

Final Thoughts

A lot of people who come here know that its there. Some people miss it completely as it is an obscure location where you have to look at the window to order. They have gained quite a following since they’ve opened. The quality of the drinks show and it’s a unique experience to order your drinks like a drive-thru…or in this case – walk-thru.

They are open on weekdays 8:30am to 4:30pm. On Saturdays, they are open 10am to 4pm.

Water Street Cafe is located in Gastown right across the Steam clock. We highly recommend making reservations and requesting a window seat. They have been around since 1988 serving up Canadian and Italian inspired dishes on the menu. We came here for dinner to check out the space and a few items on the menu with my husband.

Calamari Fritti

The deep-fried calamari is served with fried jalapeno, red onion, lemon pepper, and garlic aioli. The calamari was very crisp on the outside and the inside was tender and not chewy at all. A pretty well executed dish.

Burrata Caprese

This is made of burrata, heirloom and roma tomato, basil, salsa verde, white balsamic glaze, sun dried tomato pesto, chive oil, and himalayan pink salt. It’s not a large dish but the quality of the ingredients are great. The burrata is so delicious and creamy. One of my favourite cheeses.

Chef’s Amuse Bouche

The Chef made us something extra as a taster before the entrees. These was salad and sauces that complimented the seared scallops.

Chef’s Daily Creation – Proscuitto Wrapped Salmon with 2 Lime Prawns

This is served with roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It was a good portion size but the salmon was a tad overcooked, so it wasn’t as tender as I would have liked.

New York Steak

This has a medium-rare grilled 8 oz. AAA Canadian steak topped with red wine demi-glace, roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It was cooked to a medium rare but it was pretty average.

Affogato

It is served with espresso, vanilla gelato, and biscotti. It was really good and hit the spot for the end of the meal. Very satisfying.

Final Thoughts

Most of the dishes for this meal was delicious but the entrees that we chose fell flat. They do have a selection of pasta dishes but maybe we should have chosen those. I’ll still be back though because their brunch menu sounds amazing and we did really enjoy the appetizers we had. They offer a great happy hour 7 days a week from 3 -5pm with 50% off appetizers, $5 wine or beer and $8 craft cocktails.

PiDGiN Restaurant is located between Chinatown and Gastown. They specialize in Asian and French fusion cuisine paired with craft cocktails.

They are one of the participating restaurants on the Dine Out Vancouver 2019 list. We got a special sneak peek to see what they are offering customers. You will be treated to their $45 menu which is served family-style. You can get the Omnivore menu or the vegetarian menu. Great to have both options.

Dine Out 2019 Menu + Drink Menu

Wine and Sake Pairings

You can add on wine and sake pairings to your dine out meal to really accentuate your experience at PiDGiN. They are known for their wine and sake program, so sit back and relax as they educate you on a variety of drinks. It is a $45 add on, but it’s a great selection.

Head Cheese Terrine

This was one of my favourite dishes of the evening. The smooth texture of the terrine was so good when paired with the crispy puffed beef tendon and savoury pickled shiitake mushrooms.

Corned Beet Salad

No beef found here, but only beets. The ricotta and the pumpkin seed crackers add much needed texture and complimentary flavours that go well together. There is also a ume vinaigrette and fermented daikon in it.

Okonomiyaki

The Okonomiyaki is topped with green onions, Bulldog sauce and KewPie Japanese Mayonnaise. It’s a bit dense like it’s a Japanese pancake pizza.

Seared Pacific Rockfish

It also has riesling choucroute. The rockfish was delicious and full of flavour.

Cache Creek Skirt Steak Ssam

This dish is more interactive and you put a bit of steak, kimchi, daikon, garlic, and ssamjang and eat it like a lettuce wrap. The steak was made medium rare but was a bit tough and not as tender than we initially thought.

Chocolate and Black Tea Parfait

To end the meal, this is the chocolate and black tea parfait with Ovaltine crumble. The parfait and the foam has a very similar texture so it blended together, so it was hard to differentiate the strong chocolate taste. The Ovaltine crumble was a nice added texture.

The following dishes below are a few different dishes on their Dine Out Vegetarian menu or add ons.

Spicy Miso Fried Cauliflower

It also has sesame seeds, basil, and mint. This is a vegetarian dish and can be found on their Vegetarian Dine Out Menu. It is packed with so much umami flavour from the miso. Great combination.

Kombu Risotto

This has soy braised fennel, confit leeks, wakame and pickled kombu. This was my least favourite vegetarian dish as it felt more like a congee rather than a risotto. Lacked a bit of seasoning and needed more flavour.

Cultivated Mushrooms

I could have this plate all to myself. It also has squash puree, yuzu brown butter, and a ramen egg. So damn good. Highly recommended!

Oyster Shot

This is an add on for an extra $4.50 and it is served in a shot glass with a horseradish emulsion and apple granite on top. A fun way to start the meal.

Final Thoughts

The menu is pretty solid and there are so many ways to elevate your experience here with add-ons as well as wine and sake pairings. You can stick with the basics or go beyond it. The family-style concept is nice and refreshing if you like sharing but maybe not for everyone.

Cinara is the sister restaurant of Autostrada Osteria and is known for their Italian dishes like pasta. Cinara is closing down by the end of 2018 and will be rebranded as Autostrada. When talking to the staff, they assured us that only minor tweaks would be made, so it’s not a full facelift.

For our monthly foodie blogger dinner, we decided to come have dinner here as we heard good things about the menu. I’ve missed the last few meet ups since Summer has been busy, but I was able to make it this time to see my blogging friends again as well as celebrating my birthday.

We opted to do the Carte Blanche – 6 Course Tasting Menu for $75 as it seemed like it would give us a good taste of the menu.

Interior

The space is quaint and set the mood for an intimate dinner. Reservations are best to ensure your group has a seat as you never know if it will be super busy or not.

Menu

House Sourdough Bread and Whipped Butter

To start off the tasting, we had a slice of baked sourdough for each person at the table with whipped butter. The bread was nice and rustic but we felt there was definitely excess flour on the outside that made the crust harder and more flakey.

Chicken Live Paté

This was the amuse bouche for the evening. It is a chicken liver paté on a crisp flatbread with fermented cornichon, which are pickles. You first take your knife and spread it all over so it is evenly spread out and enjoy. It was delicious.

Burrata Cheese

The next dish is their creamy burrata cheese served with a dollop of preserved and fresh plum purée, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and cracked pepper. It didn’t pair very well with the plum and took away from the burrata as the star of the dish.

Beef Tartare

This isn’t your typical beef tartare. It has house ground strip-loin beef tartare with pickled pear, radish, local greens and creme fraiche. It’s not as densely packed as other beef tartares out there and was missing more of an acidic element to this dish.

Pacific Halibut Cartuccio

This dish has halibut wrapped up in parchment then baked in the oven. It is accompanied with potato, carrot, and escarole underneath. Then it is poached in plenty of butter. This was the worst dish of the evening. It was incredibly overcooked and dense.

Tortelloni

This is a larger version of tortellini. It was very delicious and one of our favourite dishes of the evening. We wished there were most pasta dishes as part of this tasting menu as they specialize in pasta.

Pork Collar

This is served with cipollini onion, cannelloni beans, apples, chanterelle, and brussel sprouts. It was tender and delicious, but a tad on the salty side. I wished this portion was a bit larger but as it was on the tasting menu, it looked like the pork collar was chopped in half, which made it less appealing.

Salted Caramel Tart

The salted caramel tart has crushed pine nuts and a dollop of apple purée on the side. It was a great way to end the meal. I wished this slice was bigger as it was very good.

Final Thoughts

The 6 course tasting menu for $75 wasn’t as I had imagined. There were more misses on it that hits. The portions were smaller and looked like it was sawed in half. We would have preferred to order the regular items from the menu and probably saved some money that way. We tried it, so you don’t have to. Just stick with the pasta dishes and you can’t go wrong.

Hummus for your thoughts? My friends and I have been having hummus cravings for the last little while. The taste is just delicious when used as a dip or incorporated into other dishes like a wrap.

Balila is a Mediterranean and Hummus restaurant in Gastown. They have 9 flavours of hummus on their menu and you can’t just have one. 4 of us came to give their menu a try to see what they offer besides hummus. This family run business has a big heart that stands behind their food and community.

Interior

There is a long table, seats by the window and some smaller tables for customers to dine.

Rainbow Hummus

If you want a taste of all their different hummus options, you need to get the rainbow hummus. It comes with all the flavours:

  • Original
  • Garlic
  • Olive
  • Spicy
  • Yam
  • Pest0
  • Beetroot
  • Avocado Mint

There is also another flavour but it contains walnuts and my friend is allergic. It’s a great thing they point that out in the menu to help those with dietary restrictions.

All of the hummus were very good but the olive, spicy, and avocado mint stood out to use the most. Unique flavours that is harder to find around town. Highly recommend the rainbow hummus as it’s a great way to taste all their varieties of hummus.

Garlic Chicken Wrap

In the wrap, there is lettuce, tomatoes, hummus and the delicious garlic chicken. The chicken is delicious and full of that garlic flavour. You can’t go wrong with chicken and hummus in a wrap.

Sirloin Cube Wrap

Their sirloin cubes are marinated with a secret sauce and paired with lettuce, tomatoes, and hummus The steak cubes were tender and has good flavour from the marinade.

Mediterranean Veggie Wrap

If you want something a bit different without meat, check this out. It has different grilled veggies flavoured with olive oil and spices to create a good flavour combination.

Cauliflower Wrap

Another veggie option with hummus, roasted cauliflower, tahini-lemon mix and spices. This is definitely packed with flavour and it might just surprise you. So saucy and so good.

Lamb Shank and Fattoush Salad

This was their special for the day it has a beautifully braised spiced lamb shank with saffron rice and a fattoush salad. The lamb shank was tender and the combination of spices was yummy.

The fattoush salad has lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, spring onions, parsley, radishes, pita chips and their lemon-sumac dressing. A good fresh and crisp salad that goes with the lamb very well.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was impressed by the dishes. It makes for a good delicious quick lunch stop. They also do delivery in the Downtown area, so if you’re looking for something healthier, this is a great option.

Have you ever seen silk on the ceiling or chandeliers of Egyptian gemstones? Just one block east of Gastown on Powell is a new escape into an opulent lounge of Indian and French cuisine with an unexpected healthy twist. It has taken 5 years for the owner, Gary Sidhu, to bring his vision to life. Much of that effort went into building relationships with organic and local, when possible, suppliers and the gathering of extravagant décor items.

From the outside, the giant Buddha head and bright turquoise, traditional Rajasthani door may throw you off guard on this block that isn’t particularly known for anything. The hand painted elephants of this 135 year old door are guarding a treasure trove. Step beyond the doors and you’re immediately transported into a tranquil sitting area washed in pastel blue with subtle hints at what’s to come with the subtle gold foil details, silk ceiling and a beautiful floral mural.

Peel back the curtains into the main dining area and it’s another world again. Another giant Buddha head hovers behind the bar and candles dot the tables, shelves and corners. Silk covers the walks, leather covers the seats in the lounge area and everything else is in gold foil or gemstones. The more you look the more there is to see.

With the extravagant show that the décor puts on, it was unexpected that the owner was this modestly dressed, soft spoken but all smiles man. We chatted in the bright waiting area about growing up in India, organic farming, nutrition and how he hasn’t caught a cold in 7 years due to healthy eating.

Gary grew up working on his father’s organic farm in India with his siblings when they were children.  He absorbed all of the techniques that his father taught him but it wasn’t until he came to Canada that he realized how important it is to grow organically. One of his first jobs in Canada was working at a non-organic greenhouse tomato farm. He described to me his shock when he learned all the practices. His sentiment could be felt in way he said this single sentence: “nothing came from the soil.” Taking what he learned from his father and wanting to make something good for the world, so comes Silk Lounge with its organic ingredients and whole eating philosophy.

“The main thing I want is to stop unhealthy foods like processed foods.”

Gary described to me the loss of nutrients and other benefits that come from natural foods as they become more processed. Which means a high involvement in sourcing and preparing ingredients in their kitchen. They grind their own spices from seeds. They avoid using white flour and opt for other grains such as barley or millet which is more nutritious.  Most impressively they make their own cheese in-house with milk from  local and organic Avalon Dairy.

I am convinced that organic food is more healthy but sometimes I wonder just how much of a difference does it make in the taste department. I got my answer when their paneer cheese blew me away. I’ve never really liked paneer. I’ve always found the texture strange and dry and the taste pretty bland on its own. Silk Lounge’s paneer is on another level and was my favorite dish of the night. I’m convinced this is how paneer should be and everything I’ve had before were imitations. You should know it’s not the blinding of healthy food talks. I ate the food before I chatted with Gary and evaluated the taste prior without knowing the story.

At the table we filled our bellies with appetizers and cocktails. Mushrooms with a gingery kick and steak bites with very fragrant peppercorn.

If a hot chili kick is more your game, the shrimp is dressed to spicy perfection.

If you don’t like spice then there is the basil chicken. Locally raised and free-range.

For dessert we wrapped up with a completely house-made cheesecake with mango and caramel sauce.

There is a certain joy in this restaurant amidst the shimmering decor. Their floor manager in training Baz, pictured in the candid above, lights up when you ask him about his favorites. The owner fights through language barriers to share his passion for whole and organic foods. They shared a moment when Baz was telling me about how much work has been put into the ingredient sourcing and Gary gave Baz appreciation for his dedication  to the front of house.

I’m definitely going to visit this hidden gem again. In all dimensions from food to service to atmosphere, there’s something special going on here.

Mosquito is a dessert and champagne lounge in Vancouver located right in the heart of Gastown. There aren’t that many high-end dessert shops in the area, so we decided to come here after dinner for a drink and sweets. The lounge is very small, but is very relaxed for just hanging out with friends.

Menu

Pistachio Mille-feuilles

This layered dessert has pistachio crème légère, roasted strawberry, cocoa nibéstreusel,  strawberry jelly, and cocoa nib ice cream. We really enjoyed this dish due to its textures of the pistachio cream and streusel. It was devoured quickly and enjoyed by us all. The dessert is really a work of art since there are so many elements that make up the dish like those white chocolate feathers.

Thai Basil & Raspberry Chocolate Bar

This is constructed out of light chocolate mousse, Thai basil parfait, raspberry marmalade, blackout sponge, raspberry and chocolate ice cream. The ice cream was more like a sorbet due to the raspberry. This was a beautiful dessert but when it came to texture, it was all soft. It would have been nice to have a crunchy texture to the dish.

Earl Grey Tea

To go with dessert, I got their Earl Grey Tea in a small pot. We had some drinks before coming here, so we opted to caffeinate instead.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s one of the only sit down dessert restaurants in Gastown with a good vibe.  It’s definitely a place if you want to keep the conversation going after dinner with drinks.

Taste & Circle is a shop with different pop-ups inside. They are currently giving away 1,000 selfie lattes if you show them their Snapchat filter. Otherwise, a selfie coffee is around $4. My friend took me here for a coffee break.

The coffee bar is at the front and when I came here, they opened at 11am.

You can either take a selfie there or send them a selfie or image that you want to have printed on top.

Once they create the latte, they put it into a machine that burns the image into the foam.

It gets “printed” very quickly and you get to enjoy it all afterwards.

Nemesis Coffee is located on Hastings Street right under the new SFU building. I heard they have avocado toast, so cL, Nosh & Nibble and I decided to meet up over lunch. I love meeting up with foodies and trying new places in town as we end up going auto pilot talking about the amazing food scene in Vancouver. The hardest question of them all is “what is your favourite place”. Those who ask me that question know I hesitate to answer. For good reason too, you can ask me IRL one day.

Coffee

The interior of Nemesis Coffee is visually stunning with the light wood, white and some greenery. The aroma of coffee really envelops the room and its so good. They take pride in their coffee and hands down, they make a good cup of coffee. They even have vials of coffee beans.

I got a cappuccino and there was some latte art on top of a heart and perhaps some wings. It was really good coffee and strong, which I really enjoy.

Classic Chocolate cashew sea salt cookie and cold nitro brew was what Hanson had for his snack.

Toast

Bangin’ beans toast with heirloom beans, legumes with romesco sauce.

Avocado Toast with smashed avocado, ricotta, and cilantro. You can also add a poached egg to this if you want. This was ok but it didn’t impress me too much. It looks pretty but it was missing something. Maybe that egg. Either way, it was a good accompaniment to coffee for lunch.

Overall, I love the coffee here, but the food just too way too long to arrive. The service is also lacklustre and inconsistent. Some of our drinks were put on the counter for pick up and the other was delivered to the table. There was a really big time gap between the coffee and toast.

Clough Club is now offering brunch out on their patio. They serve up badass cocktails and drinks, but now you can pair it up for brunch on the weekends. We were invited to try a few of their brunch offerings and cocktails to see what their brunch experience out on the patio is like.

Interior

There are a few seats inside, but with the beautiful weather, you might as well have it outside. Pros and cons of both options.

Crepes

Fried Chicken Savoury Crepe has spinach, onion, bourbon maple syrup, and hot sauce. Delicious! One of my favourite dishes since the chicken was so addictive. Also chicken and hot sauce is the best combination.

Brisket Savoury Crepe has caramelized onion, cheddar, kale, sunny side egg and hot sauce. That egg definitely adds a lot to this crepe.

Cannoli Sweet Crepe has ricotta, honey sweetened creme, and fresh berries. It was ok, but we wanted a little bit more sweetness from this dish.

Banana and Hazelnut Sweet Crepe has granola, nutella and fresh berries. We all really enjoyed this out of the 2 sweet crepes.

It’s great to see that they are putting their own fun twist to crepes. The savoury options were really good and I would come back for them.

Bacon Cheese Dog

The hot dog uses Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and topped with double smoked bacon, pickled onion, American cheese, sunny side egg and maple syrup. There is a side of tater tots as a nice touch. It’s a dressed up hot dog, perfect for those who need some indulgent food. You can also find something similar on their regular menu.

Fried Chicken & Waffles

Golden waffles is topped with buttermilk fried chicken, sunny egg, bourbon maple syrup and hot sauce. The fried chicken was surprisingly moist for white meat. A fun dish for brunch, but their quality of waffle could be improved.

The Hangover Burger

Inside the brioche bun is a beef chuck patty, American cheese, fried egg, iceberg lettuce, and tomato. Upon first bite, it reminded us of a Whopper because of the smokey beed patty. It was ok, but it would have been nicer if was more elevated and juicier patty.

Tater Tots

The tater tots were crispy and the perfect little things to accompany a meal. You must get a side of these.

Drinks

Food is one half of the experience at the Clough Club, you gotta indulge in the drinks.

Mimosa

A brunch classic drink is the mimosa – bubbly mixed with freshly squeezed orange juice. Really good especially when its fresh pressed orange juice.

House Radler is a combination of Driftwood Witbier combined with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. It is also topped with a slice of grapefruit. I love this so much.

Caesar

They also have really good caesars, not overly salty as they make their own mix from scratch. It is also topped with a tomato, bocconcini and bacon.

Final Thoughts

Overall, they have amazing drinks for brunch and a few of the dishes are hit and misses. If you go with the savoury crepes, you can’t go wrong. Just don’t forget the side of tater tots.
