Krispy Kreme is collaborating with Oreo and they have created limited time only flavours from now until April 18th, 2021 at participating locations. 2 weeks only! We are huge fans of Oreo and Krispy Kreme, so we had to take a drive to the closest Krispy Kreme in Delta, BC to get these sweet treats.

There are 2 options of the donuts to get- Oreo Cookie Glazed Donut and the Oreo Cookied Over-the-Top Donut.

Oreo Cookie Glazed Donut

The Original Glazed Doughnut is covered in an Oreo cookie glaze, filled with cookies and kreme, topped with an icing drizzle and Oreo cookie pieces. This was really good especially when it’s paired with a coffee to balance out the sweetness. As for the cookies and kreme filling, there wasn’t much in it as you can tell from the photo. Other than that, it’s very enjoyable with the generous amount of Oreo cookie glaze. I would definitely get this again.

Oreo Cookie Over-the-Top Donut

This has the Oreo Cookie Glazed Donut, drizzled with chocolate icing and topped with cookies and kreme filling and an Oreo cookie wafer. It’s definitely over the top but so epic for Oreo fans. Its harder to eat with the varying textures, but you can’t deny that it looks great.

Final Thoughts

This was a great collaboration between Krispy Kreme and Oreo. Too bad it’s only here for 2 weeks and then it’s gone. The Oreo Original Glazed Doughnut was our favourite in terms of taste. If you’re there anyways, might as well get both to enjoy the whole experience. Plus, the Oreo Cookie Over-the-Top Donut is great for pictures.

Basak Cafe recently opened up and I was fortunate to have a passionate foodie follower let me know about them. With the pandemic, it’s never easy to open a restaurant or cafe with the reduce capacity for social distancing. Basak mean crispy in Korean and their waffles have a crunch to them when you bite into it.

As I’m usually in the area, I had to check it out. They are located beside House of Tofu Soup, a few meters away from Han Nam Supermarket and Hanin Village. They are most popular for their waffles and coffee.

The people behind Basak Cafe have worked at many notable restaurants and cafes in Vancouver. They have travelled the world and have been influenced by different tastes and cultures. As they were planning to open a restaurant, they worked hard on developing Korean style hotdogs, but with this location, they decided to start off with waffles for now. I absolutely love Korean corndogs, so I hope they add that on their menu soon.

Interior

There are a few tables inside for small groups and they are all spaced apart and blocked off with clear curtains. I usually do take out, but I felt very safe here, so I dined in here as it was just myself.

Menu

Half and Half Chubby Waffle

I went with the half and half waffle which has matcha and red bean, as well as strawberry. It’s the best option to taste both flavours.

I like how it’s not too sweet and they use real strawberries in their cream, so it’s very very fresh and enjoyable. The matcha is strong and the red bean isn’t too sweet either. Good if you love matcha. If I had to choose a flavour, it would have to be the strawberry.

The waffle itself is a bit darker in colour but it holds up very well the cream and doesn’t go soggy. I ended up doing takeout afterwards for my husband and no issues at all.

Iced Dalgona Latte

I really like their version of the iced Dalgona latte with the dalgona pieces. Very different than the viral trend of whipping up instant coffee.

It was strong and slightly sweet, so it was enjoyed with the waffle.

Final Thoughts

It’s a great cafe to hang out with a few friends that are in your bubble. They are going to have more menu options once they work out any kinks, but I’m excited to see those new items.

If you’re in the area, definitely give them a visit.

Remi Patisserie has their official storefront open in Vancouver after doing a series of pop-ups all over the Lower Mainland. Even in the middle of a pandemic, we can’t resist a sweet taste of Remi’s delectable treats. Remi was the head Barista and Pastry Chef at Origo Club in Richmond and after doing pop-ups, he gained quite a fan-base for his Asian-inspired baked goods.

You can find Remi Patisserie nestled on W 7th Ave near Cambie Street. It’s a few minutes walk from Olympic Village Skytrain or Broadway City Hall Skytrain.

Pre-Orders

I was passing by the area and decided to line up to get a few of their treats. I didn’t pre-order ahead of time, so I had to try my luck. Good thing I got a few of the last items before it was all gone. I kid you not, if I waited 15 more minutes, there would be nothing left in the display cases.

If you’ve had Remi’s baked goods before, you know that pre-orders are a must. To pre-order, you just message them on Instagram. If you don’t have Instagram, you will have to order at the shop. Not the most inclusive option, but that’s what they have at the moment.

Line ups

There are 2 line ups at the shop. One of the left for pre-orders and on the right are the walk-ins. If it’s your first time here, it is a bit confusing.

Small Stuff

A majority of the items left in their store was the small stuff. That’s what they call their bite sized pastries.

We managed to pick up:

  • Cloud Cake
  • Mango Mochi 2.0
  • Hojicha Mochi
  • Almond Plum Flan
  • Crispy Choco Hazel Financier
  • Matcha Mochi Eclair
  • Tonka Pecan Eclair

All the flavours were very nice, but the ones that really stood out to me were the matcha mochi eclair, crispy choco hazel financier, and the almond plum flan. Don’t get me wrong, the other items are really great too, but these ones are more unique to Remi Patisserie.

Large Cakes

They have large cakes if you are celebrating something special. This does include their roll cakes as well. The items rotate seasonally, so make sure to check their Instagram to see what is available.

Final Thoughts

All of his creations sell out in a few hours, so you will want to put in a pre-order to ensure you get all the delicious treats you want.

Overall, everything we tried was solid. Sometimes it’s fun to buy a bunch of items and not know what it is. We were very impressed and we will be back for more. Next time, I’ll preorder.

J Squared Ice Cream is the latest ice cream shop to open in Richmond. A lot of talk of their tea-based ice cream flavours really caught the attention of people all over the Lower Mainland. There really isn’t a lot of other places that have a range of flavours revolving around the love of tea.

We love tea, so we couldn’t wait to give it a try.

We were invited for a sneak peek before they open their doors on September 1, 2020.

Menu + Flavours

Taste Test

We got pints of the Shanghai fog, Thai milk tea, and Japanese black sesame. All three were very solid flavours and it’s so hard to go wrong with them. The texture was very smooth and creamy.

At the store, they do have waffle cones available if you’re eating it close by. We opted for pints so we can slowly enjoy at home.

Final Thoughts

They have been really busy since opening and are still working out some kinks. Their line of tea inspired ice cream is pretty good and we can’t to see what else they can create.

The selection of tea flavours are pretty solid and isn’t just Asian tea flavours. Pries are very fair and worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Lady M New York has launched their new site ladym.ca to offer shipping to Canada, but it is very costly to Canadians at over $200 per crepe cake. It got Canadians really excited, but then Spiritea in Vancouver began offering Lady M cakes imported from New York by the slice or as a whole cake. You don’t need to spend over $200 to commit to a whole cake as you can now have it by the slice.

We were invited by Spiritea to try their Lady M Cakes to see how it compares.

Prices

  • Slice of Mille Crepe Cake ($19.50)
  • Whole Mille Crepe Cake ($225)

Signature Mille Crepe Cake

The quality was superb and not sure what their secret is to keeping it so fresh even though it was imported across the country. It is soft and fluffy with 20 paper thin crepes between their pastry cream. When you look at it, it’s really a work of art. If you’ve ever tried making these on your own, it tasks a lot of skill. This cake just melts in your mouth.

This is the top flavour as it’s what made them famous in the first place. Classic.

Matcha Mille Crepe Cake

This is another popular flavour that gets sold out quickly. Quality was good as well and if you’re a matcha lover, you gotta get this.

Final Thoughts

Overall, quality is fantastic and you can’t argue with that. The price is steep, but you can’t get a taste of Lady M without getting on a plane or ordering it from Lady M New York (the shipping is a pain).

It’s a luxury Mille Crepe Cake, so if you can afford $19.50 for a slice of cake, go for it.

Dairy Queen has a new Cotton Candy Dipped cone which launched at participating locations. This has their classic vanilla soft serve dipped in a a sweet cotton candy coating. We saw it on the menu and had to give it a try while we were here. The cone comes in 3 different sizes – small, medium and large. I ordered a medium and it was huge.

They also released a cotton candy blizzard on the menu as well, but we didn’t get it this time.

Taste Test

I was expecting to hate this but it wasn’t bad at all. The cotton candy coating was sweet, but it was balanced out nicely with the vanilla soft serve. I still prefer chocolate over this cotton candy flavour, but it all comes down to personal preferences.

It’s definitely a fun and colourful treat for the Summer.

Dairy Queen came up with yet another limited time only treat – Piñata Party Blizzard to celebrate their 80th birthday at participating locations. It’s essentially a birthday celebration in Blizzard format like a confetti cake.

When I heard about it from a friend, I just had to check it out. How could I not give it a try?

What’s inside the Piñata Party Blizzard?

It has vanilla soft serve ice cream with icing, pieces of confetti cake and multicoloured-white chocolate stars embedded inside. Then, it is topped with whipped cream and sprinkles.

It comes in mini, small, medium, and large.

Taste Test

The one I got from my local Dairy Queen definitely did not look like the images, but that’s just poor training and it’s just too bad. They seemed have put the sprinkles into the ice cream instead of on top.

The chocolate stars aren’t vibrant, so when I tried to scoop them out, it just looked like vanilla ice cream covered globs.

It is sweet and very reminiscent of a confetti cake with lots of surprises inside. My husband is a sweet-tooth so he gravitated towards this. I personally was indifferent about this flavour of Blizzard since I don’t like overly sweet desserts. It all comes down to personal preferences.

Final Thoughts

If you love the taste of Birthday Cake or Confetti Cake, you’ll love this flavour. It’s very fun and vibrant Blizzard. Catch it before it’s gone.

Whisk Premium Matcha and Level V Bakery have finally opened their doors in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. They are located right at the library on Kingsway. This plant-based matcha tea, cafe, and bakery has no dairy and eggs. Great for those who are lactose intolerant, vegan or vegetarian.

Both of these companies have been around for a while and they have finally made their dreams a reality by having a storefront. It’s definitely a challenging time with the pandemic, but they made it happen.

Keeping You Safe

There are a few things they are doing at the cafe and bakery to keep everyone safe.

  • One way: Enter from the entrance on Kingsway. The door on E 8th is Exit Only to maintain ONE WAY flow through the space.
  • Hand Sanitizers: They have hand sanitizers available by the cashier’s table, as well as the exit.
  • Facemasks: They can also provide you a face mask upon request.
  • Sneezeguards: They have this covering the entire counter.
  • Limited capacity: They are only allowing 5 customers in at a time to respect social distancing.
  • Card payments: No cash is accepted.

Soft Opening Menu

Regular Menu

Interior

The space is very narrow, so there aren’t tables available for more than 2 people. It’s a good spot for just 2 people to be chatting.

I did see this larger table, but not sure if it will be available when dine-in is available.

Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

This has a base of organic housemade strawberry puree, organic coconut milk, and their matcha. I also decided to add pearls to it because it was an add-on. Why not? It’s a pretty trendy drink and I honestly got it for the looks. I was also very curious how it tastes.

You have to mix this drink well. You get the freshness of the strawberries, then the strong matcha taste afterwards. It was actually a pretty good drink.

Mochi Muffins

When I was here, they had matcha and chocolate flavours of their mochi muffins avalable. It was pretty good! One of the better ones I’ve had so far.

Final Thoughts

It’s good to have another matcha cafe and bakery open up in the area to give people more options in the Mount Pleasant area. They offer some pretty unique items on the menu that I haven’t see elsewhere, so I’m excited to visit again when they have their grand opening.

Krispy Kreme has been coming up with a lot of limited edition donuts lately. The last one was the strawberry glaze, key lime glaze, and then the lemon glaze. Now, they released their trio of dessert donuts – Banana Pudding, Coconut Cake, and Mississippi Mud Pie. These are available now at select locations in North America. Luckily for us in Vancouver, their Delta location has all the latest donuts available.

You can get these donuts until June 24, 2020.

We made sure to get there 30 minutes before opening so we didn’t have to wait hours in line. It’s funny how the Covid-19 Pandemic is making people go crazy over sweets.

Banana Pudding

This doughnut is filled with Banana Pudding and topped with fluffy creme and vanilla wafer cookies. Just like a banana cream pie, what’s not to love? There is a good amount of filling inside too.

Coconut Cake

A delicious coconut flavored cake doughnut topped with cream cheese icing and shredded coconut. This was my least favourite just because of my own personal taste preferences and its not as exiting as the other ones.

Mississippi Mud Pie

A light and fluffy doughnut with Chocolate Pie creme, dipped in chocolate icing, and topped with cookie and graham crumbles and marshmallow drizzle. This was my favourite of the bunch as there was a great ratio of creme to donut. It worked very well together.

Final Thoughts

Overall, a fun trio of donuts to try. Banana Pudding and Mississippi Mud Pie were great but the Coconut Cake didn’t make the cut. Clearly, we love our sweet filled donuts.

I’ve watched the Viral Youtube videos of Vietnamese Jelly Cakes being made and wow are they ever stunning. These beautiful 3D flower cakes are made by injecting milk jelly into blocks of agar jelly. The flowers look suspended in time. Absolutely beautiful and it’s been on my mind for years until I saw a Vancouver Instagram account – Cakes in Bloom selling them from their home business.

After blogging for 10 years, there’s really not many new items that really excite me that I need to share right away. Cakes in Bloom is that exception and I want to tell everyone.

They sell cup minis, cube minis, 5.5inch cake and 6.5 inch cake ranging from $12 to $65.

What are Flower Jelly Cakes?

These jello desserts are made of a base of agar jelly with hand piped flower petals, then sealed off with a flavoured base. Each cake is unique and made of a variety of all natural foods and no artificial food colouring at all. Green is made of matcha, white is coconut milk, pink is dragonfruit, etc. It is vegetarian and they can make it vegan too.

They have a few different flavour options – original milky pandan, milk tapioca, coconut milk tapioca, lychee, pineapple, and passionfruit (limited time only).

Behind Cakes in Bloom

The mother and daughter duo behind Cakes in Bloom have been perfecting this craft since 2018. The mom learned the skill in Taiwan and has been creating cakes as a hobby. It took some time to practice and perfect the technique.

After getting lots of positive feedback from friends and family, they decided to make it public as an at home business. They wanted to share it with Vancouverites since there’s nothing else like it here.

Creating these stunning 3D jelly cakes help tap into her creative side as she’s always been an avid cook, baker and adored the craft of jello art.

Taste Test

The look is fantastic but how does it taste? There are many different flavours you can choose from, but we got milky pandan. It was subtle but paired nicely. It isn’t too sweet and has a good aroma of pandan. The top layer with the clear jelly and flowers don’t have too much taste, but the flavoured base has all the flavourings. You gotta eat it together.

We also tried the lychee flavour and it was good too. As for the texture, it’s a big block of jello so there’s not much texture, so keep that in mind.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the jelly cakes are stunning and it’s a unique gift to give to a friend or family member. We enjoyed it and will buy more in the future.

Dairy Queen Canada has rolled out their Summer Blizzard menu with 6 limited time only Blizzards – Oreo Cheesecake, Frosted Animal Cookie, Raspberry Fudge Bliss, Wonder Woman Cookie Collision, Cotton Candy and S’mores.

Wonder Woman Cookie Collision Blizzard Taste Test

Our attention was on the Wonder Woman Cookie Collision Blizzard and how can we miss this? It is made of chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolatey cookie dough and fudge blended with vanilla soft serve.

It’s hard to distinguish between the 2 types of cookie dough, but the added texture was nice. It wasn’t overly sweet and it’s a nice treat in the summer.

Tim Hortons Canada has finally released their Fruit Loops Dream Donut and Timbits. It was slated for earlier this month but it was delayed a few weeks for unknown reasons. Either way, it’s out now and we had to try them out. You know how crazy we are for cereal.

You can get them in-store or you can order via UberEats for delivery. Our baby was taking a nap, so we ordered from UberEats to save some time even though there is a delivery fee attached to it.

How much is it?

The Fruit Loops Dream Donuts retail for $1.99 while the Timbits will cost $0.29 each. The prices can vary by region.

Taste Test

The base of the donut is just a plain vanilla donut, topped with a strawberry frosting, Fruit Loops and then more vanilla frosting piped over top to hold the Fruit Loops together.

It has a strong artificial strawberry flavour with hints of the classic Fruit Loops flavour. As the donut has a hole in the centre, some of the Fruit Loops can fall through when you’re eating. The texture of the Fruit Loops was a nice addition.

The texture of the donut was light and fluffy, but all the frosting made it a bit too sweet for my liking.

Final Thoughts

The Fruit Loop Dream Donut is very fun and great to try, but I wouldn’t pick it up again. It just wasn’t a good pairing with my personal preferences. I’m more of a Honey Cruller and Boston Cream fan.

I can see the Fruit Loops TimBits a great item to share among a group.

Cafe Hashtag is now open in Coquitlam right by the H Mart on North Road. Since they were under construction, that name has always got my attention. There are a lot of other cafes in the area, so competition is definitely high.

I was very curious how they would stand out from the rest. With Covid-19 pandemic, it’s really hard to open a business now. I decided to make the trip to pay them a visit on the first day of opening.

Interior

Because of social distancing, the furniture isn’t in their intended places. They have markers on the ground to direct customers to wait in line, order and pick up their items.

There are some table available for dining in, but I only saw one small group at the time I was here.

Menu

Latte

They have different sizes of lattes but I just went with a smaller 12oz. They use the beans roasted by C Market Coffee, which is also in Coquitlam.

It was a good latte and pairs well with their waffles.

Dalgona Milk Tea

If you want something more trendy, they have dalgona milk tea on the menu. There are pieces of dalgona toffee on top that dissolves into the drink slowly. The base is espresso and milk.

An interesting twist to the classic Dalgona coffee.

CroWaffle

This is their Croissant Waffle on a stick. It’s shaped like Taiwan or South Korea if you use your imagination. hahaha. It has buttery layers with some syrup and icing sugar to give it a bit of sweetness.

Final Thoughts

It’s good to have more options in town for coffee, but they definitely have a lot of competition. If you’re in the area, drop by Cafe Hashtag for some coffee and waffles.

Earnest Ice Cream is back as they have found a way to continue offering their delicious ice cream while keeping their staff and customers safe during this Covid-19 Pandemic.

You can find their product at a few shops around town, but it may be a bit hard to find. I like to go to the source! Every Tuesday morning at 10am, Earnest Ice Cream opens up their online store and once all the spots are filled for the week, they can’t add on any additional spaces to ensure physical distancing.

They offer pints of their ice cream as well as Ice Cream Sammies. There is a minimum $40 order, but it’s pretty easy to reach that amount if you get a few pints for yourself and a few to give away as gifts.

Curbside Pick Up

When you arrive, you call them saying you’ve arrived. Pop open your trunk and they will drop it in there. Very simple and no interaction required.

Pints

They have a long list of pints and the selection is great. It’s nice to have a decadent treat in the fridge waiting in there at the end of the day.

We went with :

  • Toasted Coconut
  • Oatmeal Brown Sugar
  • Apple Pie
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
  • Mint Chip

All these flavours are solid and can’t go wrong with. A few classic flavours are Whisky Hazelnut. London Fog, and Espresso Flake.

We’re definitely going to be accumulating the jar quickly as they aren’t currently accepting the jars back. They do make great containers for storing other things.

Sammies

If you are looking for something different, there are ice cream sandwiches. The flavours change, but the ones that we got were:

  • Apple Walnut Sammie
  • Carrot Cake Sammie
  • Milk Chocolate Cookie Bar Sammie

The flavours sound amazing, but I personally wasn’t a fan. Some of them are either too sweet or the texture is just mushy.

Final Thoughts

Glad Earnest Ice Cream is back with their selection of delicious and addictive Ice Cream. One of the best places in Vancouver for great flavour combinations. I’ll definitely be back again for more pints once my current stash runs out.

Royal City Donuts has been selling their decadent donuts at farmers markets and at pop up shops across the Lower Mainland, but with the Covid-19 Pandemic, they had to change the way they do business.

They have plans for a store front, but they’re not there just yet. For the time being, they have opened up their online store to order donuts for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday which will be delivered contactless between the hours of 10am-3pm.

They deliver to Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities.

Their orders sell out fast, so you have to check their social media to see when the orders open up on their website. I remember when I was trying to put in my order for Saturday, but while I was checking out, it sold out for that day, so I had to opt for Sunday instead.

They do their preparation from YVR Prep, which is a commissary kitchen located in Burnaby. It’s an awesome space and so many small business start out from that kitchen.

6 Pack

The six pack of donuts come with a random assortment and is predetermined at the beginning of the week when you place your order. There are no substitutions.

All of the donuts were pretty good. They have a nice flavour and texture. There are some execution issues with the filled brioche donuts as there could have had more filling. The other donuts are simple but done well. Their popular Ferrero Rocher and maple bacon donuts didn’t make it into the batch this week, but those are the ones to look out for.

Raspberry Filled Brioche Donut
Strawberry Jam Filled Brioche Donut
Chocolate Pudding Filled Brioche Donut
Chocolate Pudding Filled Brioche Donut
Oreo
Chocolate Sprinkle
Apple Fritter
Maple

Final Thoughts

Overall, they are pretty good donuts. I didn’t love all the flavours in the box, but its a nice assortment to give you a taste of what they have to offer. Besides the 6 pack of donuts, they also have a pack of 4 large fritters and 12 donut holes which is pretty great too.

Plus, you can’t go wrong with free delivery if you live within the delivery zone. Makes for a great gift too.

Great item to just have in the freezer when you want to have a sweet treat. Even better if you have kids at home. They can help you prepare it and makes a great activity.

Individual or Large Cakes

Cakes are still available for any occasion. They will help you add a note to the cake too. We personally needed a large cake that feeds 10 and they had them available so it was perfect. No need to go outside as it was delivered to us as we live in Burnaby close to the shop. They can also do custom orders of 20+ servings, but you need to order in advanced so they can get it ready for you.

If you want a little sweet treat, they still have a large selection of cakes. You’ll find something for your sweet tooth.

Fresh Pastries

I’ve missed their fresh pastries a lot. I remember going on coffee dates here with friends, grabbing a coffee and a pastry. They have a good selection of pastries available. My personal favourite are the items that are double baked.

  • Butter Croissant
  • Pain au Chocolat
  • Hazelnut Pain au Chocolat
  • Croissant Puff
  • Ham and Cheese Croissant
  • Double Baked Almond Croissant
  • Double Baked Hazelnut Chocolate Croissant
  • Fresh Fruit Danish
  • Double Baked Almond and Chocolate Croissant

Final Thoughts

I absolutely love Chez Christophe as it’s my favourite pastry shop in North Burnaby. If you want to order, take a look at their website just in case information has changed.

Stay safe out there! Remember to spread some love and cheer as there is definitely too much negativity out there in the world.
