OEB Breakfast Co. is finally coming to Vancouver in the Yaletown neighbourhood. Originally from Calgary, Alberta and established in 2009, this little brunch spot is really expanding quickly across Canada with another location in Brentwood (Burnaby) coming soon.

OEB works closely with farmers in local areas to create high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients that go into their dishes. For example, they source their bread from A Bread Affair located right on Granville Island.

OEB stands for Over Easy Breakfast and it is totally reflected on their menu. We were invited for a sneak peek of their Yaletown location to try a few of their brunch items.

Interior

The space is nice and bright with a lot of seating. On weekends it will definitely be busy, but you can use the Yelp Waitlist to reserve your spot and check wait times without waiting outside the restaurant.

There are tables for small to large groups and patio dining as well. Family friendly, which is great.

Menu

Mimosa

What breakfast with their ladies isn’t complete without mimosas? Obligatory pictures with them are a must, perhaps even a boomerang.

Coffee

Coffee is a must and comes with refills. They use Caffè Umbria, which is from Seattle Washington, but has family roots in Umbria, Italy since 1940.

Premium Fruit Juices

There are premium fruit juices on the menu – grapefruit, apple, mango, cranberry or pineapple. All pretty good and decent sizes for the price. Tastes really good.

Confit Duck & Egg

This has hand pinched pierogies, hardwood smoked bacon, duck confit, green onions, vinaigrette, and a free run organic egg. The perogies are sourced from A Taste of Ukraine from Port Moody and made just for OEB. This was our favourite dish and very surprising to have pierogies topped with confit duck and eggs. Usually they have a duck egg but they can’t source it locally just yet, so they used a chicken egg for the time being. All the ingredients work together and not too salty at all.

Farmer John’s Delight Omelette

This is their omelette with hardwood smoked bacon, rosemary ham, green onions, and field mushrooms. This omelette is huge as it covers more than half the plate. It is served with fresh fruit and a slice of bread, which we chose brioche. Very hearty meal. Surprised that they would have dragonfruit as one of their fruits but I guess its in season.

The Soul in a Bowl Breakfast Poutine

This has poached eggs, herb potatoes, Saint Cyrille curds, slow cooked bacon lardons, and brown butter hollandaise. We got these egg soft poached, and with a base of wedge fries. A twist on a Canadian classic. The curds were nicely melted and stringy. We tried the soft poached eggs and we were warned that it’s so soft that some part of the white are runny too. A nice option but after tying medium and soft, we prefer medium poached eggs from here.

Meat-Less to Say Breakfast Poutine

This is their vegetarian version (if you eat eggs) of the breakfast poutines and it has poached eggs, herb potatoes, Hass avocado, ripe tomatoes, Saint Cyrille curds, and hollandaise sauce. We got the eggs medium poached, which were done perfectly. We got the bowl with half arugula and half criss cross fries. Depending on what you decided to have on the base of your breakfast poutine, it can be light or quite heavy.

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of THIS!

This lovely dessert is made of New York style cheesecake stuffed French toast, and a Bailey’s crème Anglaise. It’s a very decadent dessert and best shared with those around the table. At first I thought it was a strange thing to have a cheesecake sandwiched between French Toast but man, it was good.

Final Thoughts

Overall, great spot of breakfast and brunch in Yaletown right by the seawall. Whether it is savoury or sweet, they’ve got something for you. If you’re a fan of this Calgary favourite, definitely check them out. Highly recommended if you want a solid brunch.

An easy brunch to put together on the weekend is a waffle platter. You just need to assemble the ingredients together on a board and serve. I’ve seen them create this at restaurants in town, but it is pretty pricey, so I decided to create it at home. I went with gluten-free waffles because it can get really crispy because it uses rice flour and tapioca starch. You can find these items at most major grocery stores in the baking aisle.

There are many waffle makers on the market, but I have the Cuisinart Vertical Waffle Maker. Since it is vertical instead of flat like other machines, it requires less counter space and is easy to store when not in use. It’s a pretty smart machine and will beep when your waffle is ready. Easy to clean afterwards too.

Gluten-Free Waffle Platter

[tabs tab1=”Directions”]

[tab id=1]

Makes 3 waffles

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups (375 ml) rice flour
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) tapioca starch
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) milk powder
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon (3.75 ml) kosher salt
  • 1½ cups (375 ml) buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • 1 /3 cup (75 ml) vegetable oil
  1. Combine dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl; whisk until well blended. In either a large measuring cup or separate mixing bowl, combine the remaining ingredients and whisk to combine. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry and whisk until smooth.
  2. Preheat the waffle maker to desired setting (a tone will sound when preheated).
  3. Pour 1 full cup of batter through the top of the spout. When tone sounds, the waffle is ready. Carefully open the waffle maker and remove baked waffle. Close waffle maker and repeat with remaining batter.
  4. For best results, serve immediately with your favourite savoury breakfast items. I chose potato salad, brussel sprouts, eggs, and bacon.

There it is, a delicious waffle platter for brunch.

I love a good brunch on the weekends, but sometimes it’s good to enjoy it at the comfort of your own home. With the Winter weather arriving, sometimes you just want to be cozy in your PJs and slippers.

In partnership with Egg Farmers of Canada – a committed partner of Food Banks of Canada, Chef Lynn Crawford, chef/owner of Ruby Watchco created “Recipes that Give” aimed to inspire others, donate to their local food banks, and ensure Canadians have access to nutritious and wholesome meals, including fresh, local, high-quality eggs.

Did you know Egg Farmers of Canada donates over 1 million eggs annually to the Food Banks of Canada? If you want to donate to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB), donating money is the best way to make the money stretch. GVFB is able to purchase around $3 of food for every $1 donated, meaning monetary donations can go the furthest.

Leek, Lemon and Feta Quiche

[tabs tab1=”Instructions”]

[tab id=1]

Makes 1 large quiche (6 servings)

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cups (500 mL) cleaned and diced leeks
  • 1 cup (250 mL) heavy cream
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) grated lemon zest
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 ounces (90 g) feta cheese, crumbled

Thaw puff pastry according to package directions.

Preheat oven to 375⁰F (190⁰C).

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add leeks and cook until they are wilted, about 5-7 minutes, then reserve.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together cream, eggs, lemon zest, salt and pepper.

On a lightly floured surface, or between two layers of plastic wrap or parchment paper, roll out the thawed puff pastry to a thickness of about 1/4 inch (5 mm). Line a shallow 9” (23 cm) pie plate and press the pastry up the sides to make a nice edge.

Distribute leeks evenly across the bottom of the dish. Pour the cream mixture over leeks. Top the quiche with feta.

Bake 30 – 40 minutes until the center is firm and the crust and top are nicely browned.

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with Blueberry Sauce

[tabs tab1=”Instructions” ]

[tab id=1]

Talk about fluffy pancakes! Chef Lynn Crawford shares one of her favourite recipe that can easily be made for brunch or breakfast. Try it – it will please everyone around the table.

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 eggs
  • 1½ cups (375 ml) ricotta cheese
  • ½ cup (125 ml) melted butter, cooled
  • ½ cup (125 ml) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) sugar
  • ½ tsp (2 ml) salt
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) grated lemon zest
  • Butter, for griddle or pan

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes:

Separate the egg whites from the yolks.

In a large bowl, combine egg yolks, ricotta cheese and melted butter.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and lemon zest. Slowly add to ricotta mixture.

In another bowl, whip the egg whites until they form firm peaks. Fold the egg whites gently into the batter, until just combined.

Over medium heat, lightly butter a griddle or non-stick pan. Ladle in about ¼ cup (60 ml) of batter to form small hot cakes and cook until golden brown on both sides.

Blueberry Sauce

  • 3 cups blueberries (750 mL) (fresh or frozen), divided in half
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp (2 ml) vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tbsp (22 ml) cornstarch dissolved into 3 tbsp (45 mL) water

Place 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) blueberries in a small saucepan. Add water, sugar and vanilla. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture comes to a low boil, sugar is dissolved, and blueberries just start to break apart.

Add dissolved cornstarch to saucepan and bring mixture to a rolling boil. Turn heat down and simmer on low heat for 2-3 minutes. If the sauce gets too thick, add a little bit of water, one tablespoon (15 mL) at a time.

Remove from heat. Add remaining blueberries and stir gently. Serve warm or cold.

We all love hitting the snooze button before waking up and getting ready to work. For some, eating breakfast isn’t part of their morning routine before heading out the door. Egg Farmers of Canada wants to inspire Canadians to eat eggs for breakfast during the week. Eating eggs during the week can be as simple as scrambling or frying up some eggs.

Here are my 2 go-to recipes for weekday eggs that require little prep and clean up.

This blog post was sponsored by Egg Farmers of Canada but the opinions are all my own.

Cherry Blossoms (Sakura) are blooming all over the world and they are just so beautiful. They don’t last very long, but they are Spring’s snow. Some love it and some hate them. Just don’t park your car under a cherry blossom tree or else you’ll be having a bad time. When the cherry blossoms bloom, it’s really pretty and photographers flock from all over to capture it’s natural beauty. In the early 1930s the mayors of both Kobe and Yokohama presented Vancouver’s Park Board with 500 Japanese cherry trees for planting at the Japanese cenotaph in Stanley Park honouring Japanese Canadians who served in WWI. Currently, the City of Vancouver has over 130,000 cherry blossom trees and continues to grow.

I wanted to take the beautiful inspiration of Cherry Blossoms and create some easy healthy breakfast items using Almond Breeze. Almond Breeze is an almond beverage used as a substitute for milk and soy. I really like the sweetened original flavour.

Berry Banana Smoothie

An easy item to make is a berry banana smoothie. To get the natural pink colour, I used berries. I find that Strawberries, Raspberries and Pomegranates work best. Cherries are good too but it ends up giving it a darker colour. Take all the ingredients and throw it into a blender. Very easy and you can’t screw up.

  • Half Banana
  • Handful of berries (strawberries and raspberries)
  • 2 cups of Almond Breeze

Red Berries Chia Pudding

For a quick breakfast on the go, chia pudding is very simple and easy to make. You can prepare it the day before or in the morning if you have time. I like to keep my ingredients simple, so here is a 3-ingredient chia pudding.

  • 2 table spoon of chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup of Almond Breeze
  • handful of berries (cherries, pomegranates, raspberry and strawberry)

Blend the berries and Almond Breeze in a hand blender. In a mason jar, mix the chia seeds and berry almond mixture. Easy and can be done in 5 minutes or less. You can change up the berries in your chia pudding too. I used frozen berries as it was on sale in the store and it keeps for much longer than fresh fruit.

A&W Canada has just launched their All Day Breakfast across Canada. Most of their locations have started to transition towards All Day Breakfast, but not all of them have. They are expecting by mod-May that a majority of location will have All Day Breakfast. My friend and I were craving hashbrowns for lunch and decided to come here for some breakfast sandwiches.

Check out my review of A&Ws breakfast items from last year.

Their menu seems to be serving everything from their breakfast menu, not just a limited menu like another fast food competitor. Ah hem McDonalds.

I’m very impressed that they were able to make everything from their plated breakfast to their Mama Burger.

I got a sausage and egger in an english muffin. Also with a root beer and hashbrown on the side. My english muffin was a bit scorched, but it was still delicious and it wasn’t too greasy.

My cravings were satisfied and I’m glad I can get their hashbrowns any time.

If you’re ever looking for a quick all day breakfast, check out A&W.

fraser-park-1

It’s been years since my last visit to Fraser Park Restaurant in South Burnaby. M comes all the time without me, but it was time to take my food buddies here to the subburbs to enjoy this hole in the wall restaurant for German Breakfast. We came early in the morning and it was already packed by 10am.

I’m always surprised because there’s nothing around here except for warehouses.

fraser-park-inner-1

The interior has nothing special, just a bunch of tables everywhere.

fraser-park-inner-2

It’s not about the decor, its really all about the food they serve.

fraser-park-2

Dee went with their Classic German Breakfast with 3 scrambled eggs with sauteed peppers, onion and cheese. It also has hash browns, sausage, bacon, ham, potato pancake and toast.

fraser-park-5

The rest of us went one step crazier and got the Deluxe German Breakfast. It has everything in the classic German breakfast, but with added Schnitzel and Gravy.

fraser-park-3

Meat on meat on meat. This is the perfect start to the day if you have a big appetite. Everything tasted good and you can’t go wrong with a brunch of grilled meats.

fraser-park-4

Overall, the price is good and you get a large meal. Total comfort food for breakfast right here. Of course they have more than just German Breakfast. They have the usual items you can think of for breakfast and lunch. A true hidden gem.

au-comptoir-1

Au Comptoir is a classic Parisien cafe in Kitsilano. Flo was back in town and we love meeting up over coffee and delicious food. Thats what foodies do best.

They are open at 8am everyday for breakfast. It’s great that they are open so early.

au-comptoir-2

No breakfast is complete without coffee. I grabbed a cappuccino with my meal. It has a nice pit of latte art on top. They also serve it with a small little cookie. Nice touch.

au-comptoir-3

The water bottle is pretty neat as they reuse old Whiskey bottles.

au-comptoir-4

Breakfast Au Comptoir ($13) has oeuf cocotte, potato rösti, and your choice of house-made sausage or bacon. Flo got the bread replaced with more salad. Bacon is deliciously crisp.

au-comptoir-5

Croque Madame ($14) has gruyère, ham, fried egg on country bread, and salad. I liked how it was served open-faced and it wasn’t too heavy for breakfast. The salad balances out the croque madame.

Overall, it was a good place to catch up with friends over breakfast. The servers were nice and a good place to start the day with food and drinks.

chia-pudding-2

I’m not a fan of overly complicated recipes and I like to make breakfast without thinking too much. I really can’t function much in the morning. Less ingredients, the better. Putting together chia pudding with pomegranate seems easy enough.

Chia is a superfood native to Mexico’s central valleys. Chia, often gifted to the Gods, was the third most consumed plant source after corn and beans by the Aztecs and Mayans, who were the first to cultivate the seed.

chia-pudding-3

Chia seeds are light in taste which makes them easy to integrate in your daily diet as they do not alter the flavour of your dishes. You can add chia to smoothies, juices, and other beverages, or throw them in your soups, salads and sauces. Sprinkle chia on your oatmeal, yogurt and cereal, or use chia in your cake recipes as a substitute for eggs or as a thickener. I’m sure you’ve seen it on a lot of Instagram breakfast pictures.

chia-pudding-5

To put together the chia pudding, all you need are 3 things:

  • 1 part chia seed
  • 2 parts unsweetened almond milk
  • As much fruit as you want

Mix the chia seed and almond milk and set aside until it turns into a tapioca consistency. Once it’s set, add your fruit on top. It can be berries, banana, granola or whatever. I went with pomegranates.

If you need added sweetness, you can use sweetened almond milk, or add in honey, agave syrup or maple syrup. For myself, I found that the fruit helped add the sweetness.

chia-pudding-4

Chia pudding is great for breakfast and you can prepare it the night before. Low in calories and pretty filling.

chia-pudding-1

I used the Prana ProactivChia seeds ($7.99), which is certified organic, kosher, vegan, preservative-free, gluten-free, GMO-free, and sulfite-free. It can be found in more major grocery stores in Canada.

original-pancake-house-anaheim

When in America, make sure to see if there is an Original Pancake House nearby. Or at least that’s what I do. Ever since visiting one in Chicago, I’ve been thinking about their Dutch Baby and Apple Pancakes ever since then. It is a chain restaurant around America, but it was first started in Portland in 1953.

original-pancake-house-inner

The seating is nothing fancy, but the staff are very friendly and accommodating. It was our last day in Anaheim and our group of 5 ladies with a suitcase each really stood out. Everyone else seemed to be a local.

original-pancake-house-coffee

Coffee was needed by all of us. There was no denying this.

original-pancake-house-dutch-baby

Dutch Baby is oven baked German pancake. This is one of their signature items and it comes in 2 sizes – small and large. We wanted the large size, but the small size arrived at the table.

original-pancake-house-lemon-sugar

Served with whipped butter, lemon and powdered sugar.

original-pancake-house-apple

Apple Pancake is oven baked with fresh granny smith apples and pure Sinkiang cinnamon glaze. It has a lot of sugar on top. It was decent here. I had a better one in Chicago.

original-pancake-house-bacon-eggs

Bacon and eggs is a classic. We needed something savoury to balance out the sweet pancakes.

original-pancake-house-egg-hash

Hashbrown and eggs is another good item to share with the table. Best eaten with ketchup and hot sauce.

original-pancake-house-pancake

Pancakes were beautiful and served with whipped butter.

original-pancake-house-sausage

Side of Sausages were delicious and an essential part of any breakfast.

original-pancake-house-waffle

Going to Victoria Island on the weekend in the morning is a bit of a pain.  Our Ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal has a Cafe on board called Coastal Cafe. As we got up pretty early, we didn’t make a stop for breakfast, so we decided to have breakfast on board.

bcferries-line

For the morning menu, they have:

  • Waffles
  • Oatmeal
  • Cereal with Milk
  • Eggs (scrambled & fried)
  • Hashbrowns
  • Sausage
  • Bacon
  • Ham
  • Toast
  • Fruit Salad
  • Baked Goods

bcferries-toast

It also came with toast.

bcferries-sausage

coming-home-outer

I’ve been growing tired of going to the same ol’ places for brunch in Burnaby, so I looked into New Westminster if they had anything interesting. After much Googling, I stumbled upon Coming Home Cafe. It looked like a cute place and was rated quite highly. How have I not heard of this place? Their website even has a web cam so people can see if it’s busy or not.

I decided to take a chance and bring M and Scarface with me.

coming-home-inner

Their menu is on the chalk board and everything is under $10. The interior really isn’t impressive at all, it’s more like an old diner where nothing matches or is from a thrift store. It really has that homey vibe because as a kid, I remember a lot of our cups and plates didn’t match.

coming-home-coffee

Kicking Horse Coffee ($2.75) and its self serve. You grab the mug from their shelves and begin pouring the coffee and mixing in your milk and sugar. Just like home.

You also get a maximum of 2 refills, but usually people don’t need more than 3.

coming-home-breakfast

The Uptown ($8.50) comes with 2 egg, toast, choice of meat and hashbrowns. I got rye bread, sausage, sunny side up eggs, and the Hashbrowns. It was simple and good just like a traditional breakfast.

coming-home-kickass-benny

Kick Ass Benny with side of hashbrowns ($9+ $3) has black forest ham, poached eggs and fresh Hollandaise sauce on top of a cheese scone. There’s no english muffin here, it’s the cheese scone that rocks it.

Overall, the place is very homey and the owners are very nice. You get good traditional breakfast foods.
