Crave on Main

Crave on Main is coming to a close today – September 29th, 2013 after 7.5 years in operation. When M and I found out, we were quite sad because we were convinced they had the best burger in town.

We came here 2 years ago  and fell in love with this restaurant. With all the great items on the menu, we always end up getting the same burger. Something about it was so magical.

Crave on Main

Organic Beef Crave Burger with back bacon, truffle mayo and blue cheese ($12 + $1 +$1 +$1 = $15)

It comes with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, an organic beef patty on the soft focaccia bread. The additional toppings of the blue cheese, truffle mayo and back bacon.

Everyone at the table ordered this and it was just like music in our mouths. The patty was very moist and flavourful, the blue cheese just oozed everywhere and the back bacon was so good. We haven’t been able to find anything else in town that compares.

Crave on Main

Mushroom soup (+$1.50) was needed as an upgrade since we didn’t want fries. I have a weird addiction to mushrooms, so I just had to have it.

Overall, after all these years, they have kept up the consistency of their food. I hope the owners decide to open another restaurant, but no word on it yet. I’ll be crossing my fingers to see this burger be back someday.

Instead of a restaurant, it will be replaced by housing. Boo.

Lou Mitchell's

Lou Mitchell’s is one of Chicago’s oldest restaurants specializing in diner food. They only sell breakfast and lunch till 3pm everyday. It’s located in the loop and serves up American food.

Lou Mitchell's

There was a lot of seating inside but during the weekday, it wasn’t too busy at all.

Lou Mitchell's

What makes them different is that everyone gets a donut hole and a box of milk duds. As the owner is Greek, he offered a nice sweet treat to welcome his customers as a symbol of his generous hospitality.

Lou Mitchell's

The reason they chose Milk Duds to give away is because they were originally manufactured in Chicago and the owners was a customer and a friend to Lou.

Lou Mitchell's

Corned Beef Hash comes with eggs cracked on top and a side of toast. It’s only supposed to be 2 eggs, but looked like 4 eggs. I got a choice of different bread but I chose rye bread. The dish was good but a bit greasy, which isn’t strange cause it’s a diner and breakfast food should be sinfully delicious.

Lou Mitchell's

One egg comes in a pan with roasted potatoes. Jenn also added $0.50 for raisin toast. She wasn’t too hungry, so she settled on this.

Overall, it’s a great place to go to if you want American diner food. It’s not fancy food. You may not remember the meal, but you’ll remember the donuts and Milk Duds.

Smart Mouth Coffee

Smart Mouth Coffee is located in the heart of Gastown. I came in the morning with kamsicle to get our daily coffee. I’ve never been here before and for some reason I always thought it was a bar for some reason.

Smart Mouth Coffee

They always have cheeky signs outside the store. They change everyday and are quite funny.

Smart Mouth Coffee

The interior has the “Gastown” look with its brick walls. Strangely, they also sell beer here too.

Smart Mouth Coffee

There are lots of sandwich choices too. I was tempted to grab a sandwich, but it’s only breakfast time. I probably need to come back to try one.

Smart Mouth Coffee

Good thing there were a few pastries there.

Smart Mouth Coffee

Almond Croissant was actually massive. Tons of almonds on top! The croissant itself was a bit dense and took me a long time to finish. Not the best almond croissant out there.

Smart Mouth Coffee

Soy Latte had a nice strong taste. Good stuff.

Overall, pretty good place to do some work or to grab a snack. The service was definitely lacking here, but it doesn’t really impact your experience since its more of  a grab and go place in the morning.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

There’s a new restaurant in town called Cheat Day. It’s a cute little cafe that lets their customers indulge in gourmet grilled cheese. Cheat Day is a clever name since most people tend to try to go on a diet but reserve one day out of the week as their “cheat day” to indulge in whatever they want. In this case, its grilled cheese.

I came here during lunch hour with Magz. We have cheat day every day of the week, so we were not worried about our waistlines.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

When we went inside, the space is quite narrow but there are seats on the side. The cool thing about the tables are they are made of wheel barrows.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

On the left of the wall is this sick murals. I thought the bear and the little penguins were really cute.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

On the right side are tons of toy soldiers and tanks. Never thought I would see that done before.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

More toy soldiers. As you can tell, the interior is very playful and perfect for hipsters.
They sell Phillips Soda – Intergalactic Root Beer and Sparkmouth Ginger Soda.

Cheat Day Vancovuer

They even have little plants at their tables. Ok ok, enough of the cool little decorations, lets dig into the food.

Cheat Day Vancouver

Peach Brie ($8) has brie, caramelized onions, peach chunks and peach jam on your choice of bread. We had it on brioche bread and it made it taste so amazing. This grilled cheese is the most gooiest  grilled cheese I’ve ever had in Vancouver. Magz had a fun time eating it as it dripped on her hands and onto the table.

She was in heaven for the duration of the lunch hour.

Cheat Day Vancouver

Bacon Grilled Cheese ($9) comes with smoked gouda, mushrooms, caramelized onions, arugula, roasted garlic and bacon on brioche bread.

The exterior has a perfect crust and a gooey centre. When you bite down into it, it’s music to your ears.

Cheat Day Vancouver

This grilled cheese isn’t as gooey as the Peach Brie Grilled Cheese, but is still very stringy as you bite into it. I loved it.

Overall, we had a great experience here during lunch and was not disappointed all. Will definitely be returning.

Kaplan's Deli

I was wandering around Oakridge and needed a place to eat lunch. I don’t come to this area often, so I asked the people of Twitter where I should go. Sherman chimed in and suggested Kaplans or Applause. Since I’ve already been to Applause a few years ago, I decided to head over to Kaplans. There’s always time for a good sandwich full of meat.

Kaplan's Deli

Walking through the first part of the restaurant looked like a deli, but in the back there are a bunch of tables and booth seating. The servers were really relaxed and didn’t seem like they were happy.

After a while, we recognized that it was a Jewish deli. It can definitely be seen in the menu with items like matza balls and kosher food.

Kaplan's Deli

Lemonade and Root Beer were our choices of beverage to tackle the large sandwiches.

Kaplan's Deli

On the table, there are several condiments – ketchup, hot mustard, regular mustard, dijon mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper.

Kaplan's Deli

Mega is about $14 .95 and comes with cheese and a pile of meat between house made bread. The tooth pick in the sandwich was definitely necessary or else it would fall apart.

There is also a pickle and coleslaw that comes with it.

Kaplan's Deli

Even thought the cross-section of the sandwich is quite thick, it really is just bunched up in the middle. It’s size isn’t even comparable to the ones found in the states.

Kaplan's Deli

Norman Norman is chicken pastrami, cheese and sauerkraut sandwiched between 2 slices of buttered bread. It comes with coleslaw and your choice of fries or latkes. M chose the latkes since he loves them.

He thought it tasted ok, but the price was a bit high for what you get.

Overall, the food was ok, and the service was ok. There wasn’t anything that was particularly amazing.

Fat Duck Truck

Fat Duck Truck is one of the new food trucks to hit the streets this Summer in Vancouver. What drew us to this truck was the name and it’s delectable menu. Their menu is quite simple, all items are $10 and comes with pop and chips. When I went here, they only had 4 items – Duck confit Philly Sandwich , pork belly sandwich, Beef tongue and cheek sandwich, and their creme brulee. Yummy meaty menu, but the downside is that they are cash only.

Fat Duck Truck

Watermelon Spritz (+$1) was what I ordered to substitute the pop. It’s nice, refreshing and I’m sure it has less sugary than pop. It tasted good.

Fat Duck Truck

Pork Belly Sandwich ($10) has 2 slices of super crispy pork belly, topped with avocado cucumber relish and chipotle mayo. It also comes with house made potato chips. It’s really good, thickly cut and very very crispy.

Fat Duck Truck

Beef tongue & cheek “bahn mi”  ($10) with a hoisin and soy glaze, pickled daikon & carrots, cilantro and chili mayo. It also has the home made chips and pop.  The meat was very tender and it was like a modern twist to a bahn mi sandwich.

Overall, Magz and I really enjoyed our meals. It filled us up and we even had to save some of the chips for an afternoon snack. I would definitely revisit again.

PHAT

PHAT is a sports bar and restaurant that is located in Yaletown and specializes in Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwiches. PHAT stands for Pretty Hot and Tasty. It’s a very strange name for a restaurant, but we were very curious about this restaurant after seeing the ‘sandwich head’ around Yaletown skytrain station.

PHAT

Hot Montreal Smoked Meat on Marble Rye (PHAT Size $9.99) the meat is flown in from Montreal and the sandwich is served with Mustard & Kosher Dill Pickle. The slices of smoked meat were very thin. The sandwich was ok, but it still didn’t exactly compare to the ones in Montreal even though the smoked meat is sourced from there.  I still miss the smoked meat sandwiches from Schwartz.

PHAT

Hot Montreal Smoked Meat on Marble Rye (Skinny Size $7.99). The size between the Skinny and the PHAT size was about the same. Not really sure how much of a different there really was.

PHAT

My friend designed herself a tuna melt sandwich ($8.49). She thought it was ok.

Overall, the food was passable, but it wasn’t anything spectacular. It has a good location, a heated patio and lots of TV screens if you want to watch the game.

Taser Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

I love when there is great weather since all the food carts and food trucks are open. The hardest part of my day is trying to figure out where to eat. It’s a bad case of #FirstWorldProblems. I know, I know…horrible! There is only a small amount of food options around my work and I’m not that keen on going to McDonalds, Burger King, Starbucks or Tim Hortons. It’s like a fast food paradise near the office. As I stepped out to stroll around the neighbourhood for a restaurant, I stumbled upon Tasers Grilled Cheese. I felt like indulging on something bad, so I decided to get a grilled cheese.

Taser Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

When I looked at the menu, the first item caught my eye! BACON! They have a few different items that vary from day to day, but there is always something good.

Taser Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Swiss gruyere and cheddar melted on caramel onions and smoked bacon served between two sourdough bread. It sounded good and it did taste good. Everything that could go amazingly into a grilled cheese is in here.

Overall, it’s a good place to grab grilled cheese if you’re in the area.

Finch's Market

If you have ever heard of Finch’s in Downtown Vancouver, you will love their sister restaurant – Finch’s Market. They have been open since December 2012 serving up their delicious sandwiches and salads. It’s located on East Georgia and Jackson Avenue in the heart of Strathcona. It is literally in a residential area, so it can be a tad difficult to navigate from Chinatown if you don’t have a map.

Finch's Market

I came here with my coworker and we were so amazed by the neighbourhood. The houses are quite beautiful and reminded us of houses we would see in San Francisco. If you are going to Finch’s Market, do take the time and look around the area.

Finch's Market

Given the location is quite out of the ordinary, the vibe of the restaurant is quite calm and enjoyable for lunch. What is so unique about Finch’s Market is the small selection of local produce and ingredients. You can find spices and baking ingredients. You can enjoy lunch and also grab some ingredients for dinner, whether it be milk, cinnamon sticks or some cane sugar.

Finch's Market

You will definitely notice their large shelf full of items too. From pasta to hot sauce.  There is a lot of the out of the ordinary items you won’t find at larger grocery stores.

Finch's Market

They have baked goods too but we were here for the sandwiches and salads. muhahahaha.

Finch's Market

They also have this weird coffee contraption too.

Finch's Market

Water in mason jars.

Finch's Market

Pear Baguette has prosciutto, roasted walnuts, oil, vinegar and blue brie. My coworker loved it! You wouldn’t normally think these ingredients go well together, but they do!

Finch's Market

Avocado and Walnut Salad comes with tomatoes, cucumbers with a balsamic dressing. It also comes with bread.  The salad was very filling and held up to the same standard as the other Finch’s.

Overall, we both left full and happy. It was a lovely surprise to see such a restaurant in Strathcona. The prices are a bit pricey, closer to the $10 mark, but it’s good food.

Apple Deli

Apple Deli is right under Main Skytrain station. They sell simple soups, sandwiches and salads. On my first day of work, people warned me not to come here. Did I listen to them? I don’t think so, it made me more curious. How bad can a sandwich really be? It’s just slices of bread with filler.

Apple Deli

The inside has lots of seats and there were a few group of people inside having lunch as well.

appledeli-menu

I just wanted a sandwich, so I looked at the menu and chose the Avocado and Bacon sandwich.

Apple Deli

Avocado and Bacon Sandwich ($5.90) It’s nothing fancy, but it’s like a sandwich you can make at home.

Apple Deli

They load it up with a ton of alfalfa spouts, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, and mayo. The ingredients were very fresh, but the bacon and the guacamole were quite minimal. Nonetheless, I still felt healthier  eating this that eating at any other restaurant…probably because most of it was vegetables.

You won’t find anything fancy or creative here, but it’s decent. Imagine it like your kitchen, but having to pay for your food.

Foodwares market

At the Granville entrance to the Granville Skytrain is a restaurant called Food Wares Market, where they sell fresh paninis, baked goods, desserts, sushi, soup, coffee, premade salads and sandwiches.

Foodwares market

If you work downtown, its a quick lunch thats around $10 and tastes good.

Foodwares market

When you walk up to the entrance, you can see all their delectable treats. I was so temped to get a bunch of desserts for lunch, but I knew I just wanted a sandwich.

Foodwares market

There’s prepackaged salads, sandwiches and salads in the coolers, but It wasn’t for me. I wasn’t in the mood for something cold. The weather outside was cold enough. hahaha.

Foodwares market

Pastries.

Foodwares market

I settled on getting a panini. It seemed quite popular and people were lining up for them.

Duo ($10.75) choice of panini served with a choice of baby greens salad or daily soup. This looked like the right choice for lunch.

Foodwares market

There’s a good variety of panini types and it was calling for me. You can also choose whatever bread you want for your panini. A little bit of everything to satisfy all dietary restrictions…unless you can’t have gluten.

Foodwares market

Aged Canadian Beef Brisket, topped with Canadian brie, grilled mushrooms, braised spinach and grainy mustard in olive bread.

I liked it, the creamy brie and the beef worked well together. The panini was toasted really well.

Foodwares market

Corn Chicken Chowder was amazing! It had a good amount of corn and chicken, plus they add a hint of spices that give this chowder a nice spicy kick.

Overall, I enjoyed the lunch experience here and I would return for a quick lunch. I wish they had more hot food items, but I guess a sandwich and soup will do.

The Last Crumb

The Last Crumb Bakery & Cafe recently opened on Main Street. My sister was trying to get me out of the house, so she suggested we have lunch here. Since I love trying new places, I couldn’t say no.

The Last Crumb

It is located on Main and 15th near Burgoo. You can find street parking easily, but during busy times, you might have to park a bit further.

The Last Crumb

The cafe is 2 floors and is quite stunning. The whole concept of this bakery is to feel cozy and comfortable. It’s a great place to relax and catch up with friends over same good pastries and hot chocolate.

The Last Crumb

There’s a huge window in the back, so you can see them baking away! And they have a cool quote on their window – “Life is Short, Eat Dessert First”.

The Last Crumb

They have a bunch of different items to choose from.

The Last Crumb

They even have a few Gluten-Free items like macaroons, scones, cupcakes, and cookies.

The Last Crumb

They have a lot of different baked goods, I swear, their kitchen keeps pumping out delicious creations.

The Last Crumb

They are even whole pies on display. They looked so good.

The Last Crumb

What caught my eye when we first arrived was the board of hot chocolates. So many different kinds!

The Last Crumb

Almond Hot Chocolate with Almond Milk (M- $3.95) Instead of regular milk, they suggested to make it with almond milk, they assured me it was delicious and it sure was! It was smooth and so yummy!

The Last Crumb

Homemade Marshmallow ($0.50) was unlike any store bought marshmallow. Its kinda messy when you eat it, but it really can’t compare to anything found in store. If you have hot chocolate, you must order this!

The Last Crumb

They have a lunch menu at the back of the restaurant with special creations.

The Last Crumb

Proscuitto and Brie Sandwich with house made onion marmalade, arugula, pear and walnuts. The bread was baked fresh and was still warm when it arrived. The creaminess of the brie and the salty proscuitto always match perfectly.

The Last Crumb

Chicken BLT Sandwich with bacon, tomato, arugula and Dijon mayo. This was my favorite since the bacon was really thick and full of flavour.

The Last Crumb

Wild Mushroom Soup tasted alright. It definitely needed a bit more salt to bring out the flavours of the mushroom.

The Last Crumb

The food here is good, but not jaw droppingly amazing. The items can get quite expensive if you get a drink, sandwiches, and soup. Nonetheless, it is a great addition to Main St! I love how everything is made fresh and they are dedicated in using preservative-free and artificial-flavouring free ingredients.

Hubbub Sandwiches is located close to the Vancouver Art Gallery and they serve up Sandwiches and salads. It’s quite popular during the lunch hour for people working in the area. I myself have gone a few times with friends and coworkers to grab a quick meal or get takeout.

Orange Sanpellegrino is M’s favorite drink. When he sees it at a store, he usually get it.

Turkey Sausage Sandwich with Clean Slaw.

The Clean Slaw is made of crisp cabbage with coconut, mint and cilantro in a light, zingy vinaigrette. I liked the slaw because it is unlike any other slaw. A good balance of textures and flavours.

The Turkey sausage sandwich has free-range, lightly spiced chorizo handmade by a local butcher with base of pickled jalapenos, creamy garlic sauce, romaine lettuce, cilantro, and crunchy caramelized onions atop a toasty baguette.

Pork Sandwich has marinated pork for 24 hours and has a spicy flavour profile. It is tender and very juicy. It’s one of the more popular sandwiches. It also contains the base of pickled jalapenos, creamy garlic sauce, romaine lettuce, cilantro, and crunchy caramelized onions atop a toasty baguette.

Pork Salad is similar to the Pork Sandwich, but it’s in a salad form. The sandwich comes with a lot of meat! It’s just piled on! The spiciness level isn’t for everyone as there are the additions of the pickled Jalapeño. I prefer eating it as a salad since you don’t have the messiness of a sandwich.

This is the size of the Clean Slaw for takeout.

Overall, it’s a pretty darn good option for lunch if you are wanting a quick tasty sandwich or salad.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Gluten Free option: Turn the sandwich into a salad
  • Take out option and order online
  • Most seating in 2′s and 4′s
  • Slightly pricey
  • Pork and the albacore tuna seemed good

Meat & Bread opened a second location in Downtown Vancouver near Burrard Skytrain earlier this year. It’s definitely needed since it gives people in the Downtown core a taste of their yummy sandwiches. I came with a few friends to check it out. Plus, I needed a porchetta fix. It is only open during the weekdays during the lunch hour.

The menu is similar to the Gastown location, but with a few changes.

The Porchetta is still the most popular sandwich and you can’t say no to it when it’s prepared right in front of your eyes.

There are cute little boxes that the sandwich is housed inside.

It’s very cute, but its a bit difficult picking it up without dropping some ingredients. I just ripped one side of the box to slide the sandwich out easily.

The porchetta sandwich ($8) is a must order item! The succulent pork, crispy crackling, salsa verde in the soft bun is just so addictive!

Overall, Meat & Bread is great for a quick lunch if you don’t have a lot of time for lunch. It is easy to take it to-go or to eat-in.

To celebrate the release of The Hobbit on December 14th, Dennys and Warner Brothers teamed up to create this amazing new menu. All of the items in the menu makes a reference to characters or items in the movie.

M, Scarface, and I came for some late dinner and we were super delighted that we saw their special menu. If you’re a big fan of the Lord of the Ring Franchise, you’ll go crazy over these cool items on this menu.

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt has sliced turkey breast, savoury stuffing, melted Swiss cheese in a grilled potato bread with a cranberry honey mustard spread. It also came with a side of gravy and seasoned fries.

It was like a turkey dinner in a sandwich! The turkey was a tad dry, but dipping the whole sandwich is gravy made up for the dry meal. Holding the sandwich was quite oily, so make sure you have some napkins.

Shire Sausage Skillet comes on a super hot sizzling skillet. The skillet has a long sausage, red-skinned potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, fire-roasted peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and your choice of 2 eggs. M ordered his eggs poached, so it came on a separate dish. It’s a very hearty meal, which isn’t the most healthy item to order, but it will fill you up.

Frodo’s Pot Roast Skillet has slow-cooked pot roast, herb-roasted carrots, celery, mushrooms, onions, broccoli, seasoned red-skinned potatoes with cheddar cheese and a side of toasted bread. It’s another hearty meal, but Scarface did enjoy the pot roast meat.

With every entrée you order off the special menu, you get a pack of trading cards. There are 12 cards that you can collect.

Inside the pack of cards are 2 cards and a coupon for your next meal. It was super cool since I haven’t opened a pack of trading cards in over 10 years. The last pack of cards I’ve opened were Pokemon cards.

The coupons are not bad deals at all if you are a regular customer. We were not able to use it during this visit since we were only about to use it for future visits.

Overall, the food was cool, but as usual, it’s not the most healthiest item to consume…but we all love to indulge a little!

Burger Heaven in New Westminster has monsterous burgers! They even have a sign inside that says “Best Burgers in Town”. M and I come here once in a while when we feel super hungry…and when we want to pick up video games nearby.

The interior is alright. It’s nothing fancy since it’s all about the food. It gets pretty packed during peak hours, so do try to come early to secure a spot.

Teriyaki Mozzarella & Bacon Burger ($12.39) I ordered a salad on the side to offset all that fatty goodness.

It was a really good burger and all the ingredients are spot on. The burger was huge!

BBQ Cheddar & Bacon Burger ($12.39) is their top seller and most delicious burger.

M loved the simplicity of the burger and the taste of the bacon and the patty shine through.

The onion rings were OK. The batter is really thick and did take away from the taste of the onion.

Overall, the burgers are pretty good. I wouldn’t say they are the best burgers, but hits the spot when you are craving one. They have lots of options, so you can always get what you want.

We Rate Burger Heaven:

DD Mau is a modern Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwich shop. It’s located close to the Yaletown Skytrain. They sell drinks, salads, vermicelli bowls, and sandwiches.

Vaneats is offering a dining package right now that gives you a full sandwich and a drink for $9.50. The items included are:

  • 1/2 Grilled Lemongrass Chicken sandwich
  • 1/2 Crispy Roasted Pork sandwich
  • 1 Smoothie (Choice of avocado or honeydew)
If you are planning to come check out DD Mau for lunch anyways, might as well grab one of the passes and save a few bucks!

You get to choose between 2 smoothies. I bought one more addition to the package so I could try both.

Avocado Smoothie is my all time favorite drink here. You can’t go wrong with this! It’s made of almond milk and avocados. Seriously, you need to get this smoothie!

Honey Dew Smoothie does not have the same consistency as the avocado smoothie. It was very icy and hard to slurp up from the straw. The flavours were definitely there, but way too icy.

Grilled Lemongrass Chicken has grilled chicken thigh, pickled veggies, cilantro, sweet-chili aioli and jalapenos.

Crispy Roasted Pork has crispy roasted pork, sauteed scallions, pickled veggie, cilantro, garlic aioli and jalapenos. I am in love with this half of the sandwich! It has crispy pork skin and the juicy tender meat! It’s like a Vietnamese Meat & Bread.

Overall, KoreanGirl and I enjoyed the items that we were part of this package. One whole sandwich was too large for us to handle, so we each ate one flavour.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Limited Seating
  • All of the sandwiches are good, you can’t go wrong

A few month ago a heard much hype from The Baker & The Chef that opened near Hastings and Cambie. They have items like sandwiches, soups, and of course baked goods.

The interior isn’t too large, but has lots of seating for singles or pairs of customers.

The Capilano Panini(Full- $8) has foccacia bread, grilled chicken breast, brie, mixed greens, and pesto. There are sticks of carrots and celery on the side, which is a nice touch. The sandwich was just average and nothing too impressive. It was just disappointing how little chicken there was in the sandwich. As you can see from the picture, it’s all in the center, so when you take your first bite, you won’t get chicken.

Overall, my friend and I thought this place was ok, but with a lot of other sandwich shops in close proximity, it’s hard to compete. It’s cool to get sandwiches named after cool Vancouver streets. Quite creative.
