When I saw that KFC Canada was opening its doors and let customers behind the counter with the world’s first KFC Cooking School, I signed up right away and paid my “tuition fee” of $5. The downside was that it was all the way in Abbotsford, about a 1 hour drive from Vancouver. Either way, I am a huge fast food fan and I had to see how they create their chicken from start to finish.

Although KFC franchises around the world have allowed customers and fans behind the scenes in the past, letting the public cook their own meals is a KFC world-first. Everything was revealed except their 11 herbs and spices.

Not only is the chicken served at KFC restaurants 100% real, Canadian farm-raised chicken, but every single piece is hand-breaded and cooked with pride by real KFC cooks.

They even have a picture in their dining room with the spices and herbs, but its still a secret and locked up in a vault. Crazy, but it’s their signature flavour.

We started by suiting up in apron and hair nets. Not the most flattering, but food safety is #1 priority to keep customers and staff safe.

We were introduced to their packing area where the put all the meals together. It was cool to be up close to such industrial machines at a fast food restaurant.

In the past six months, every KFC cook went through recommitment training to ensure that they continue to take the care to hand-bread every piece of chicken, just the way KFC founder Colonel Sanders did in 1952.

They first take the pre-portioned chicken from the fridge and begin inspecting them before dunking it into the cold water.

It goes into the cold water to help coat each piece of chicken. They make sure there are no more air bubble in the batch.

Next, they dredge it in their flavour and 11 herb and spice blend, then then place it on the frying rack in a strategic way so each piece cooks perfectly.

The chicken goes into the pressure cooker, which is a fryer. All the computers are preprogrammed to make sure each batch is perfect and golden brown.

Once it is ready, it comes out nice and golden brown, just like what you’re use to.

They let is rest before putting into the another machine to keep until it’s ready to be served.

The holding machine makes sure the chicken is in the optimal environment before serving. They can let it sit for up to 90 minutes before discarding.

The fruits of our labour was a delicious box of KFC chicken, fries and gravy.

Look at that, from start to finish, they weren’t hiding anything in their original recipe chicken, just like how the Colonel would have liked it.

It was a fun hour going into the kitchen, looking around, and getting our hands dirty.

Taco Bell Canada just introduced the Naked Chicken Chalupa. It was available in the United States, but are slowly removing it from their stores.

Luckily, Canadians can still enjoy it for a limited time. The closest Taco Bell to Vancouver is one in Coquitlam, so it is a fair ways away from the city.

The Naked Chicken Chalupa has deep-fried chicken breaded and tossed with seasoning as the shell. Inside, there is shredded lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese and sauce. It has a nice spicy kick to it, which I enjoyed.

Every bite was very enjoyable. M couldn’t part with the naked chicken chalupa, so he decided to get another one. If you do pass by a Taco Bell, I would highly recommend the Naked Chicken Chalupa.

A&W Canada has just launched their All Day Breakfast across Canada. Most of their locations have started to transition towards All Day Breakfast, but not all of them have. They are expecting by mod-May that a majority of location will have All Day Breakfast. My friend and I were craving hashbrowns for lunch and decided to come here for some breakfast sandwiches.

Check out my review of A&Ws breakfast items from last year.

Their menu seems to be serving everything from their breakfast menu, not just a limited menu like another fast food competitor. Ah hem McDonalds.

I’m very impressed that they were able to make everything from their plated breakfast to their Mama Burger.

I got a sausage and egger in an english muffin. Also with a root beer and hashbrown on the side. My english muffin was a bit scorched, but it was still delicious and it wasn’t too greasy.

My cravings were satisfied and I’m glad I can get their hashbrowns any time.

If you’re ever looking for a quick all day breakfast, check out A&W.

Tim Hortons in Canada has just released the Churro donut and Churro Tim Bits for a limited time only.

Churro Donut

The churro donut is filled with caramel and then the outside is coated in sugar and cinnamon. The shape is similar to a honey cruller.

Very decadent donut, but its best warm.  I also found that the caramel filling wasn’t evenly distributed, it was mostly just on 25% of the donut.

Compared to the honey cruller, I still love it better than the churro donut.

Roll Up the Rim

The churro donut and churro Tim Bits are a nice surprise on their menu since they just brought back the Roll Up the Rim contest. Sadly, I didn’t win this time, but perhaps next time. In the past, I usually win more coffees.

bourbon-st-grill-1

Bourbon St Grill just open at Metropolis at Metrotown and it’s slowly become M’s favourite food court place to eat at. Their menu is pretty interesting as it’s Americanized food but with a cajun twist. It’s like Manchu Wok but more variety in flavours. The few times that we’ve been here, there was a line up but it moves really quickly.

You can also find them at other malls across Metro Vancouver.

bourbon-st-grill-2

I got a plate with green beans, BBQ pork, battered chicken and cajun rice. A good portion for 3 item and rice. As for food court food, it was pretty average, but you get your moneys worth.

mcdonalds-seasons-cravings-1

McDonalds Canada just introduced a few holiday items for a limited time only. I work across the street from McDonalds and their new Waffle Cut Fries lured me in.

They also have:

  • Potato Rosti & Bacon Burger
  • Waffle Cut Fries
  • Turtles Sundae with Pecans
  • Peppermint Mocha / Peppermint Hot Chocolate
  • Salted Caramel Latte

mcdonalds-waffle-fries-canada-1

I came with Amy and Dee to get a late night snack to try the Potato Rosti & Bacon Burger and the Waffle Cut Fries.

Waffle Cut Fries

mcdonalds-waffle-fries-1

Who doesn’t love a childhood classic – the waffle cut fries? The fries seem awesome, but aren’t as crisp as I would have liked them to be.

A lot of the waffle fries stuck together, so it was one big chunk. We only found one really nice waffle cut fry.

mcdonalds-waffle-fries-3

Potato Rosti & Bacon Burger

mcdonalds-potato-roti-bacon-burger-1

The new Potato Rosti & Bacon Burger has a thick beef patty, hickory smoked bacon, cheese, creamy parmesan sauce and a crispy potato rosti. It reminded me of an Angus burger with a hash brown inside.

mcdonalds-potato-roti-bacon-burger-2

This is all sandwiched between a new bun topped with flakes of oatmeal that resembles snowflakes.

Surprisingly, the burger was really good and satisfying. The creamy parmesan sauce worked really well.

Overall, these items are pretty awesome for the McDonald lovers out there.

aw-breakfast-1

A&W Canada is one of my favourite fast food restaurants and with the clocks turning backwards 1 hour for the fall, it’s easier for me to make it in time for breakfast before 11am. They also recently added pork raised without the use of antibiotics on the menu.

M and I went to the closest location to our place and came here to devour some breakfast on a weekend at 9:30am. Clearly the rest of the neighbourhood had the same idea too. The place was packed and the only seats available were outside.

All Canadian Special

aw-breakfast-5

I’ve never had their traditional breakfasts here before since most of the time we do take out. This time, we tried the All Canadian Special, which comes with toast, hash brown, sausage, bacon, and 2 eggs. You can have your eggs – scrambled, sunny side up or over easy. We were impressed that it was served on a ceramic plate with metal utensils. The eggs were cooked to order and it was good. Their eggs are antibiotic free and they are working to serving eggs from hens raised in  better cage-free housing.

Sausage and bacon

aw-breakfast-7

When do you see sausage links and beautiful strips of bacon at fast food restaurants? They were good and not overly salted.

aw-breakfast-6

They use 100% Canadian pork products and no antibiotics. They have really stepped up their game in the last few years to give Canadians something better.

Hash browns

aw-breakfast-9

Lets not forget about their hash browns. Golden and crisp, which rivals other fast food restaurant’s hash browns. Throw some of the French’s Tomato Ketchup and it makes the perfect combo.

Breakfast Wrap

aw-breakfast-8

For those who prefer to dine out because they are in a rush, they have these cute breakfast wraps made with egg, cheese, ketchup and bacon in their flour tortilla.

Mushroom Mozza Cheese and Egger with Sausage patty

aw-breakfast-4

They brought back the Mushroom Mozza Burger and they offer a breakfast variety on an english muffin. Apparently, I could add a sausage patty to it. I love their special limited time sandwiches and they are actually really good.

Final Thoughts

aw-breakfast-3

I’ve been a fan of A&W since I was a little kid when they had the cute bear mascot and those crazy addictive onion rings. It was good back then and it’s still good today.

burger-king-chicken-fries-1

Burger King has had Chicken Fries for sometime now, but it’s the first time I’ve had them.

Before my flight to San Francisco, I grabbed some before I headed on my flight. It was a pretty bad choice since it did take a while for them to crank out orders. We were almost late boarding our flight.

burger-king-chicken-fries-2

The box is pretty cute and has a chicken on it of course.

burger-king-chicken-fries-3

The chicken fries are made of white chicken meat coated in a crispy breading seasoned with savoury spices and herbs.

burger-king-chicken-fries-4

It reminded me of chicken nuggets but shaped like fries. It’s a cute concept for kids to eat, but I didn’t really have a fond liking to it because it was more limp than crispy.

innout-sf-1

In-N-Out is a popular place to go to in San Francisco near Fisherman’s Wharf. We try to go to In-N-Out when we are in the states just to get their animal fries and a few burgers. Since this location was so convenient, how could we not go?

innout-sf-3

It was super packed by locals and tourist who wanted a taste of their burgers. We waited a little while to get our order and it was so hard to get a table inside, so we ended up eating at other tables outside.

innout-sf-2

The menu prices seem a bit higher than the location that I went to in LA. Even with the higher prices, we weren’t discouraged.

Protein-style Burger

innout-sf-4

You can get any burger ‘protein-style’, where your favourite burger wrapped in hand-leafed lettuce instead of a bun. I ordered the double double wrapped in lettuce. It was so good. Because I was already eating so much on this trip, I had to resist carbs. The lettuce held together really well and had a bit of a crunch to it.

Animal-style Fries

innout-sf-5

To add some excitement to normal fries, you can ask for them animal-style. This means your fries will come topped with melty cheese,  grilled onions, and  Thousand Island dressing. It tastes as awesome as it sounds.

When you’re in San Francisco, don’t miss the In-N-Out at the Wharf.

whopperrito-1

Whopperrito is Burger King’s new menu item turning a Whopper into a burrito. Whenever I go to the United States, I get super excited to try exclusive menu items like this. We don’t have this in Canada.

The Whopperrito is made with their signature savoury flame-grilled 100% beef patty. It is also stuffed with a creamy Queso, pickles, diced onions, juicy tomatoes, and crisp lettuce all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

whopperrito-2

When I picked this up, it had a good amount of weight to it. The creamy Queso made this burrito a bit too salty for my taste. It’s definitely and interesting concept, but I think I will stick with a regular Whopper.

costco-wings-3

Costco locations in Canada have chicken wings. A few months ago, they secretly added these to some of their locations. When I heard a few friends got their hands on these, I had to grab a bunch for dinner.

costco-wings-1

I came right here after work to the Willingdon location in Burnaby. A pound is $4.99 and family-size (3 pounds) is $13.99. They seem to have lowered their prices as the original prices were covered. It’s odd to see prices go lower rather than higher.

costco-wings-2

They deep-fry all their wings in a separate fryer than their other items. Since everyone else wanted wings and they can only make so much at one time, I waited about 25 minutes around 6pm on a Friday.

costco-wings-4

Make sure to get a hot sauce and BBQ sauce to dip your wings into. It helps add a bit of flavour. They gave us 1 hot sauce and 2 BBQ sauces for this bucket.

costco-wings-6

I got the family-sized bucket and it has about 32 pieces. M and I shared this and we were able to do a pound each. There are wings and drumettes in the mix. It is a bit crunchy, but it’s got nothing on Church’s Chicken.

costco-wings-5

It’s fun to try something different. It’s decent, but it’s lacking the super crisp exterior. The wings aren’t overly seasoned so it pairs well with the sauces. I preferred the hot sauce and M preferred the BBQ sauce. The wings are best eaten hot, so the skin a bit more crisp.

mcdonalds-sriracha-5

McDonalds Canada is really cranking out new burgers lately. I’ve been seeing new advertisements for their Spice It Up Sriracha inspired burgers.

Spicy Chicken Country Chicken

mcdonalds-sriracha-2

The Spicy Sriracha Country Chicken burger is made of Canadian chicken breast, lettuce, white processed cheddar cheese, sliced jalapeños, Sriracha sauce and an Applewood smoke seasoned sauce. It also has a sesame and poppy seed glazed bun.  You have the option of having the chicken grilled or crispy. I went with crispy since I didn’t want to have a healthy week.

The sriracha and the jalapenos add a nice kick to the sandwich, but it wasn’t too spicy. The sauces and jalapenos really over power the delicate chicken taste.

mcdonalds-sriracha-1

Spicy Sriracha Mighty Angus

mcdonalds-sriracha-4

Spicy Sriracha Mighty Angus has Canadian Angus beef, hickory smoked bacon pieces, lettuce, processed cheddar cheese, sliced jalapeños, Sriracha sauce and an Applewood smoke seasoned sauce. It all sits inside a sesame and poppy seed bun.

I found that the jalapeños and the sriracha sauce worked a lot better than in the Mighty Angus burger. The nice thick juicy burger matched the spicy flavour very well.

mcdonalds-sriracha-3

Overall, the burgers were ok, but they’ve made better tasting burgers before.

mctasters-1

McDonald’s Canada has brought back their McTasters in Mexican Chipotle and Thai Chili.  They previously had McTasters earlier in the year in two varieties – Greek and Italian. I completely missed it when they offered that, but at least this time I didn’t miss it.

You can find them at select stores for a limited time for $2.99.

mctasters-2

Mexican Chipotle burger has a mini beef patty, chipotle sauce, cheese, crisp tortilla chips, shredded lettuce and a square bun. The chips were a tad stale. The bun completely eclipsed the small beef patty, but it did taste like a hamburger taco.

mctasters-3

Thai Sweet Chili has a mini chicken patty, sweet chili sauce, lettuce, cucumber, carrots and mayo. You have the option to get it grilled or crispy. I decided to get it crispy. What I liked about this one is that the chicken patty was thicker than the Mexican Chipotle burger. Taste was meh but the sweet chili sauce was dominant.

mctasters-4

Both of these I didn’t really take a liking to. For a good deal, I would still get the Jr Chicken or the McDouble from the value menu.

aw-canada-smoky_BBQ-2

A&W had their Smoky BBQ Teen Burgers released last month. One day during lunch, a few of us decided to go to A&W across the street to grab lunch and head back to the office.

aw-canada-smoky_BBQ-1

The Smoky BBQ Teen Burger has peppered bacon, grainy Dijon aioli, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno cheese, and smoky BBQ sauce.

They’ve been able to take the classic teen burger and spice it up a bit.

aw-canada-smoky_BBQ-3

I usually like to go to A&W for their limited time burgers since they always seem to nail the sauces they add to it.

mcd-blt-mcmuffin-1

The Great Canadian Taste Adventure is back at McDonalds this year and one of the new sandwiches is the True North BLT McMuffin to represent Canada as a whole.

This is the line up for this year:

The Western BBQ Burger and Chocolate Nanaimo Sundae are returning items.

mcd-blt-mcmuffin-2

The True North BLT McMuffin is available only in the morning. It has a freshly cracked Canada Grade A egg, topped with crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato and a slice of processed cheddar cheese served on a toasted English muffin.

mcd-blt-mcmuffin-3

Taking the first few bites, it was ok, but I really prefer the sausage egg McMuffin over this as it has more flavour and spices. I found that the lettuce and tomato really mask the bacon.

mcd-chicken-summer-country-1

The Great Canadian Taste Adventure is back this year and one of the new sandwiches is the Summer Country Chicken Burger to represent Ontario by McDonalds.

They had this promotion last year they had the Cottage Country Chicken Burger, which is a bit different. They didn’t bring back the McLobster this year.

This is the line up for this year:

  • Western BBQ Burger July 6 – 12
  • Summer Country Chicken Burger July 13 – 19
  • True North BLT McMuffin June 15 – July 26
  • Delectable Bacon & Cheese Burger July 20 – 26
  • Chocolate Nanaimo Sundae June 15 – July 26

The Western BBQ Burger and Chocolate Nanaimo Sundae are returning items.

mcd-chicken-summer-country-2

The Summer Chicken Country Chicken Burger has a braided-style glazed bun and inside the sandwich, there is a creamy tomato and herb sauce, Ontario farm-raised crispy chicken, tomato, leaf lettuce and processed cheddar cheese.

mcd-chicken-summer-country-3

Surprisingly, it was a good tasting burger. The chicken patty was crisp and the creamy tomato and herb sauce went well with it. I would get this again.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-1

Pizza Hut Canada had their promotion for 5 cheese stuffed crust pizza and if you got a medium or large, they would also stuff it with bacon.

M saw this online and he just had to make me try it. Of course I never say no, since I love all types of food even fast food…especially fast food.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-2

We got the medium Pepperoni Lover’s, which has extra pepperoni and cheese. It’s such has the classic pizza topping that you can’t go wrong with. I try to avoid veggies with my pizza.

pizza-hut-stuffed-crust-3

As for the stuffed crust, it was pretty hollow and needed more cheese stuffed inside. Maybe 5 cheeses wasn’t enough to fill the cavity. Other areas had more cheese that others. The bacon also wasn’t stuffed inside, it was more on the edge of the toppings area and the crust.

This was just my experience, but maybe at other locations its done better.
