A new sandwich from A&W Canada caught my eye – Spicy Habanero Chicken Burger. I made M go get me a burger as we were having a lazy day and didn’t want to cook ourselves lunch.

I always find A&W has some pretty good limited-time only burgers. All of they ones I’ve tasted in the last few years were not disappointing at all. They know how to put a good fast food burger together.

Spicy-Habanero-Chicken-Burger-1

Inside, you will find breaded boneless chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, and the spicy red jalapeno aoili. At first taste, it had a good amount of spice that I really liked. The spicy kick is a lot better than most fast food restaurants as it was still enjoyable.

It’s not too spicy, so don’t expect full on habanero intense heat.

Spicy-Habanero-Chicken-Burger-2

As a side note, I see they now use French’s Ketchup packets. Great to see Canadian companies working with other Canadian companies.

the-12-1

The 12 is a new sandwich by McDonalds Canada, which was created in response to Canadians’ evolving lifestyle preferences, where they are visiting quick-service restaurants at lunch more often and seeking convenient on-the-go options.

I have a McDonalds right across from my office, so it’s always convenient to grab a quick lunch. I don’t go that often, but I usually go when I see something new.

At first when I saw The 12, I didn’t really understand what it meant as I thought it was a bit cryptic. Apparently its named after the best time of day to eat out – noon/12pm.

the-12-2

You have the option of getting the grilled or crispy seasoned Canadian chicken breast, but we went with crispy.

You will also find white processed cheddar cheese, leaf lettuce, tomato, and applewood smoke seasoned sauce, on a sesame and poppy seed glazed bun.

the-12-3

It was definitely better than a McChicken. The applewood smoke seasoned sauce really give it a smokey tangy taste.

One of their better chicken sandwiches that they have had in a long time.

chachis-1

Chachi’s is the newest addition to the Metropolis food court in South Burnaby. They are originally from Calgary and now they have their first location in BC. There are plans to open 2 more locations at Crossiron Mills and Tsawwassen Mills.

Their mission is to make mall food better by crafting gourmet sandwiches with local ingredients. It’s great to see they are working with local suppliers like Arctic Meats, Valbella, Nossack, and Alberta Cheese. Their produce is also sourced from Yen Bros in Vancouver.

chachis-2

Spicy Mac n’ Cheese with Capicollo comes in 2 separate containers. You put the together when you’re ready to eat it.

chachis-3

Taking the first few bites, it was really good. The mac n’ cheese is very cheesy, plus the capicollo added the right amount of spice.

I would order this again.

chachis-4

Hot Philly Sandwich has rib steak, bell peppers, onion, jalapeno, provolone, garlic aioli and spicy mayo. This sandwich has a good amount of spiciness and not too overpowering. I love the amount of provolone in this.

chachis-5

Clubbin’ Sandwich has bacon, turkey, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, garlic aioli, and spicy mayo. Not as exciting as the other sandwiches, but still good.

chachis-2-1

Spicy Italian Sandwich has calabrese salami, cry-cured capicollo, jalapeno, jack cheese, garlic aioli, red pepper spread, red onion, lettuce, and tomato. M loved this.

chachis-2-2

Pork with Mac sandwich has pulled pork, sweet chili BBQ sauce, and then slathered with mac n’ cheese. This is total comfort food, but it would have been nice if the mac n’ cheese was spread evenly. You can see there was more mac n’ cheese on one side than the other. Other than that, it still tasted darn good.

Overall, it’s a nice new option at the food court at Metrotown. Although it is pricier than other options at the food court, it’s pretty darn delicious.

subway-prep-2

Subway Canada has introduced their new Butter Chicken Sandwich for a limited time. Canadian’s have been asking for more unique flavours in their neighbourhoods, so they are starting to roll out limited edition flavours. In the West Coast, I don’t think diverse flavours are a problem here, but perhaps more in the smaller communities across Canada.

I used to eat at Subway a lot in my early teens, but as I got older, I rarely make visits here. M comes here if he needs something quick and convenient.

subway-prep-3

The Butter Chicken Sandwich features all white meat chicken tossed in a butter chicken glaze that is infused with a fragrant mix of ginger, cardamom, coriander and cinnamon. The sandwich is free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

All the butter chicken is portioned out ahead of time.

subway-prep-4

The person asked us what veggies and sauce we wanted on top. Apparently there isn’t any additional butter chicken sauce to add the the sandwich. It was had to pick a sauce that didn’t clash with the butter chicken sauce coating the chicken. You wouldn’t add BBQ sauce to it or honey mustard.

subwau-butter-chicken-1

You can get it as a 6″ sub or a footlong.

subwau-butter-chicken-4

Foot Long Butter Chicken Sandwich with Italian bread, lettuce, tomatoes, olives and mayonnaise. Mayonnaise was a good sauce to balance out the butter chicken and not over power it. The flavour did come through and was oddly satisfying.

subwau-butter-chicken-3

6″ Butter Chicken with flatbread, the works, and sandwich sauce. I hate making decisions so I added everything into it. The sandwich sauce masked the butter chicken sauce a bit, so it wasn’t a good idea. Also the banana peppers overpowered the spice of the butter chicken. What you choose to add into it can really change the experience.

subway-prep-1

Overall, the butter chicken sandwich is a nice option if you come here a lot for lunch. It’s convenient and quick.

Of course, it’s not for everyone especially with all the controversy surrounding Subway in the last little while.

angry-whopper

M here with a review on Burger King’s newest limited time Whopper, the Angriest Whopper.

angriest-whopper-2

I was always a big fan of the Angry Whopper and the Whopper in general when it comes to fast food burgers available to me in Vancouver. The Angriest whopper has the same ingredients as the Angry Whopper, but now comes in a super red bun, with the spicy sauce baked in the bun!

angriest-whopper-3

This Whopper looks hilarious! I laughed out loud for awhile, as it seemed like one of those fantastic Japanese whoppers you read on in Kotaku. I’m scared of how much food colouring went into the dough of the bun and the bun doesn’t really taste like anything. It has a hint of dull spiciness, with a pretty long tail of hotness similar to the finishing taste of Red Hot Cheetos. This Angriest Whopper definitely makes the Angry Whopper spicier, but not by much.

duffins-13

Duffin’s Donuts is an amazing place if you want cheap food 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This place never stops running. You will find fried chicken, Chinese Food, Mexican Food, breakfast, burger, and hot dogs. It’s like every drunken person’s paradise. I came here with Amy and Nat to have an all out food feast. In total, we spent about $75 here. We were sober the entire time.

We ate…a lot. We didn’t make it though the whole menu, but we made a decent sized dent.

duffins-interior-2

The space is super old school and it looks like it’s stuck in the 80s.

duffins-interior-4

Fritou Fried Chicken is what they sell. It comes in Spicy and regular.

duffins-interior-6

You can choose from wings, breasts, drumsticks or thighs.

duffins-1

We grab a 4 piece and it had one of each type. The taste reminds me of a Church’s and KFC, but slightly less crisp. It didn’t come straight out of the fryer, so that probably why it wasn’t super crisp.

White meat is dry, so stick with the dark meat.

duffins-9

Veggie Spring Rolls and Pork Spring Rolls is served here too and its crisp on the outside. It’s ok, pretty average. Nothing notable here.

duffins-2

Pupusas is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla that is usually filled with pork, beans, or cheese. At Duffin’s they serve is was salsa and a simple slaw.

duffins-4

Chorizo Con Huevos Torta has lettuce tomatoes, avocado, scrambled eggs, and chorizo. A decent torta but it would be better if there was more egg and chorizo.

duffins-interior-5

They also have Chicken and Beef Tamales hanging out by the cash register. All wrapped up individually and then wrapped up in plastic wrap.

duffins-6

The tamales are made with masa, potatoes, red bell peppers, chicken/beef and then wrapped in leaves. Tasted ok as well, but nothing worth noting.

duffins-8

All Day Breakfast with Hashbrowns comes with 2 egg, 2 pieces of toast, bacon/sausage/ham, peanut butter and Jam. Pretty basic. I wished the hashbrowns were more crisp and golden brown, it was mostly wedges of potatoes.

duffins-11

Viet Mixed Ham has cold cuts and loaded with carrots, cucumber and cilantro. It would have been nice to have an option with spicy jalapenos. It was decent, but like most items here, what you pay for is what you get.

duffins-3

Cheese Burger was ok, but I prefer other types of burgers out there.

duffins-14

Chili Hot Dog is pretty good. Not gonna lie, all it’s missing is a ooey gooey fried egg and you’ll be in heaven.

duffins-7

Horchata, Pina Colada and Avocado Fresh Fruit Bubble Tea were 3 drinks we got to get a feel of what they can make. I was just surprised they had this spectrum of beverages.

duffins-interior-7

Of course, we had to end the meal with donuts. You can’t leave here without a box.

duffins-12

It definitely beats Tim Horton’s Donuts any day.

duffins-10

Overall, most of the food is pretty average. It’s decent, cheap and always open. It definitely attracts unique crowds here. You’ll find all types of people here. What makes people come back is all the different types of comfort food in one place. Sometimes you want something sinfully greasy.

Plus, those donuts are pretty good.

marine-gateway-aw-10

A&W is a short walk from Marine Drive Canada Line Skytrain Station. It’s right outside the entrance to Marine Gateway. We were here for a movie and needed a quick bite before it started. Of all the fast food restaurants, A&eW is a lot better than some of the rest.

marine-gateway-aw-2

You can order from their staff or there is also a self serve machine to put in your order and pay for it. Not as sleep as McDonalds new self serve kiosks, but it works.

marine-gateway-aw-4

We got our root beer in the frosted mugs and realized they have super cute mini mugs. So, if you’re not a huge soda drinker, you can opt for the smaller size. You only get them if you eat here. I have the larger mugs at home but I was pretty tempted to take the smaller mug.

marine-gateway-aw-5

After the drinks arrived, all the food came on one tray.

marine-gateway-aw-6

Teen Burger with Russet Thick Cut Fries was my sisters order. The fries came in a cute little basket. The teen burger has a beef patty, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, pickles, onions and their secret teen sauce.

marine-gateway-aw-7

Poutine has their Russet Thick Cut Fries topped with lots of gravy and cheese curds. It’s decent for what it is. The fries were a bit limp but at least it had lots of gravy and cheese.

marine-gateway-aw-8

Peppered Bacon Papa Burger has a beef patty, cheese, A&W seasoning, peppered bacon, roasted garlic and chili aioli, grilled onions and a sesame bun.

marine-gateway-aw-9

I wasn’t very hungry so I grabbed a basket of onion rings and a small root beer. You can’t go wrong with their onion rings. Beautifully battered, salty and ha a good chunk of onion.

marine-gateway-aw-3

At the end of the meal, you can separate all the trash.

marine-gateway-aw-1

I’m starting to notice that there are A&Ws close to a lot of the Skytrains. Super convenient and it’s better than the other fast food options.

tim-hortons-steak-1

There’s a Tim Hortons near my work and I haven’t been here in a long time. I used to go to here all the time in my University days, but I soon learned fast that the food was pretty mediocre compared to other fast food restaurants.

tim-hortons-steak-2

Looking at the menu, one item that caught my eye was the Steak and Cheese Panini using certified Canadian beef. Since we are in Canada, why wouldn’t they be using Canadian beef?

tim-hortons-steak-3

There is 100% Canadian beef steak piled on a grilled white homestyle bun, top it with red onions, and melted cheese.

tim-hortons-steak-4

The beef is very dry and overcooked and has a lot of processed white cheese.

tim-hortons-steak-5

I really hated the processed white cheese since it sticks to everything in your mouth. It was a pretty bad panini. I wouldn’t order it again. Nothing about it was good.

McD-Holiday-Warmers

McDonalds Canada has come up with some strange sounding burgers for the holiday season – Jolly Burger and Chicken Celebration. In addition to the Holiday Warmers lineup, they have peppermint mocha, peppermint hot chocolate and ginger cookies. I received a gift card from McDonalds, so it was the perfect chance to try these limited time burgers.

mcdonalds-holiday-burger-1

Chicken Celebration has breaded chicken patty topped with melted processed white cheddar cheese, leaf lettuce, bacon, and a creamy rotisserie seasoned sauce. M gave this burger a try and he thought it tasted like a McChicken with a nicer bun. He thought the flavours were pretty unimpressive. The sauce and cheese could have been a bit better.

mcdonalds-holiday-burger-2

Jolly Burger has a quarter pound of 100% Canadian Beef Patty with creamy peppercorn sauce, melted process white cheddar cheese, grilled onions and leaf lettuce. Reminded me of a quarter pounder with a lot of onions. The peppercorn sauce was ok, but didn’t transform the burger since the grilled onions dominated.

mcdonalds-holiday-burger-3

Both burgers use a toasted, cross-split premium bun topped with rolled what flakes, thus giving the appearance of ‘snow’ on top of the bun. Overall, both were ok, but I wouldn’t go out to get these burgers specifically. You can’t beat good ol’ McNuggets or a Big Mac.

The Mushroom Mozza Burger is made of a pure beef patty, A&W seasoning, sesame seed bun, mozarella cheese, mushrooms, grilled onions, and dijon aioli sauce.

aw-mozza-mushoom-3

The onion rings are always awesome. It’s made with real thick pieces of onion with a delicious crunchy batter. One of my favourite onion rings.

A good quick take out meal and definitely one of the better fast food restaurants out there.

mcdonalds-custom-build

McDonalds Canada is doing a soft launch of their new restaurant concept to evolve into a more casual dining experience. Their restaurants have slowly been shifting in the last few years by introducing the McCafe concept. Now, more changes are coming.

In Metro Vancouver, there are currently 3 locations – Langley (20037 84th Ave.), Surrey (8586 120th St.), and Burnaby (7360 Market Crossing) where customers can build their own burger from 30 different options through a touch-screen kiosk and have it delivered to their table.

The different options include:

  • 3 buns: Black + White Sesame Seed Brioche-Style Bun, Artisan Style Bakery Roll, or Lettuce Wrap
  • 5 cheeses: McDonald Classic Cheese, Monterey Jack Jalapeño, Natural Cheddar, Swiss, or Crumbled Blue Cheese
  • 12 toppings: Tomato, Lettuce, Guacamole, Sundried Tomato Pesto, Caramelized Onions, Crispy Onions, Sliced Jalapeños, Long Sliced Pickles, Grilled Mushrooms, or Red Onion Rings
  • 9 sauces: Ketchup, Garlic Aioli, Mustard, Smokey BBQ, Big Mac Sauce, Chipotle Aioli, Grainy Mustard, Mayo, or Sriracha Sauce

All these choices are super tough to make if you are indecisive. They have a few pre-built combinations like the Homestyle and Aioli Angus Burger, the Angus True Blue and Guac, as well as the Angus Sriracha The Bold.

mcdonalds-custom-angus

At the kiosk, you can order your regular meal, or do the “Create Your Taste” option. By the end of 2017, they will have these kiosks rolled out to 1,000 locations across Canada. Currently, other countries like US, UK, and Australia have introduced these kiosks as well.

mcdonalds-custom-bun

Right now you can only customize with angus beef patties. There is no option to add fish patties or chicken patties. This is where I got a bit disappointed since I wanted to build something super crazy like the Land Sea Air burger on the ‘secret menu’, but never wanted to ask staff about it.

mcdonalds-custom-review

mcdonalds-custom-add-side

After your customize you burger, you can add any sides you want like salad, fries or poutine. I went with the salad since I needed to balance out my 3 patty burger.

mcdonalds-custom-confirm

The customization starts at $6.99, but the more protein you add to your burger like patties and bacon, the cost will go up. In my case, I added 4 bacon strips and 3 patties….then added a coke, salad and brownie.

mcdonalds-custom-beep

After you confirm your order and pay, you are given a tracking number. When your order is ready, the meal will be delivered to your table.

mcdonalds-custom-butter

While you’re waiting, the kitchen is busy putting your handcrafted burger together. They start by buttering and toasting your buns. This is their cool butter roller that spreads a thin layer of butter over your bun before it goes for a toasting.

mcdonalds-custom-make

Then all the toppings get stacked on top.

mcdonalds-custom-making

Oh hello there.

mcdonalds-custom-amy

Amy the Food Queen was there as well and she created a 2 angus beef patty, with various toppings in between the sesame bun. The fries come in a super cute basket similar to A&W.

mcdonalds-custom-stack

On the other hand, I went a tad crazy and built this monster. 3 Angus Beef Patties, 4 strips of crisp bacon and kept the veggies to a minimum.

mcdonalds-custom-seasme-bun

I went with the sesame buns as well. Pretty good bun compared to the other options.

mcdonalds-custom-bacon

I probably would only recommend up to 2 patties as 3 was a bit much. Anyways, the bacon at this location was very crispy compared to some other locations.

mcdonalds-custom-home

You can grab your custom burger to go. They have a special boxes for it.

mcdonalds-bakery-sign

McDonald’s McCafe option has been doing quite well in Canada, so they have expanded their bakery options beyond muffins and cookies to go with morning coffee.

mcdonalds-bakery-display

They have a large display for all their pastries.

mcdonalds-bakery-danish

There’s butter croissants, chocolate brownies, danishes, lemon loaf, and chocolate croissants.

mcdonalds-custom-meal

Overall, it’s a neat idea, but I wish there were a few more customizable options when it comes to the patty.

mcdonalds-meal

When you go on a road trip, sometimes all there is are fast food restaurants all around you. M and I needed a quick breakfast and saw that McDonalds has their new More-Ning McWraps, where they combine breakfasts and wraps together. Imagine a bigger version of their breakfast burritos.

mcdonalds-mcwrap-box

The packaging is the same as their other mcwraps.

mcdonalds-morning-wrap

Sausage & Hash Brown More-Ning McWrap has a hashbrown, scrambled eggs, processed cheese and a sausage patty. It was like putting a Sausage n’ Egg McMuffin into a wrap…but with no muffin. Lets be real, this was delicious. Breakfast in a handheld vessel. This one packs a punch at 700 calories. It’s shocking.

mcdonalds-morning-feta-wrap

Kale and Feta More-Ning McWrap has kale, scrambled eggs, tomato and lots of feta. The kale is quite flat so they probably use a different type of kale. It tastes good too but obviously not as good as the sausage and hashbrown McWrap. It comes at 400 calories, so it is the healthier choice.

mcdonalds-hashbrown

If you order a meal, you have the hashbrown to end the meal with. I enjoyed every bite of it.

Have you tried their More-Ning McWraps yet?

A&W Canada just released their Maple Chipotle Burger available as a Papa Burger, Mama Burger and Grandpa Burger. It is made of pure beef patties, sesame seed bun, processed cheddar cheese, A&W seasoning, bacon, chipotle mayonnaise, maple barbeque sauce, pickles, crispy onions, and raw onions.

aw-maple-chipotle-bacon-mama

Maple Chipotle Mama Burger is what I got as it has a single patty. I really loved the taste of maple that comes through the sauce and it wasn’t very sweet at all which worked for the burger. I really enjoyed it and I would order it again.

aw-maple-chipotle-bacon-papa

Maple Chipotle Papa Burger was what M ordered since he wanted a little extra meat in his meal. He also echoed similar comments about the sauce.

Overall, the flavours really work together! Love it.

McDonalds Canada released the Mighty Angus Burger for a limited time. I love trying we things from McDonalds as they do have a lot of limited time offers.

mcd-angus-burgerbun

At a whopping 790 calories, its better not knowing the nutrition breakdown of this. Lets just pretend I didn’t see that.

There is the 100% Angus beef sourced from Canadian farms, a smoky Angus sauce, hickory smoked bacon pieces, crisp leaf lettuce, tomato, processed cheese and grilled onions, served on a sesame and poppy seed bun.

mcd-angus-burger

The smokey angus sauce was a great addition to the burger, but other than that, it just reminded me of the regular angus burgers on their menu.

It seems like every year they have a twist on the angus burger. Last year it was the Mighty Angus Burger with Jalapeños.

aw-sriracha-burger-free

A few days ago A&W Canada had an amazing promotion where you can get their new Sriracha Teen Burger for FREE! Absolutely free, no strings attached. Just grab your coupon here: http://awcoupon.ca/en/sriracha

There’s only 100,000 coupons available and it’s going quite quickly.

It’s only one coupon per account, but lots of people on Reddit or Red Flag Deals have been trying ways to hack the system like using screenshots or by printing out the coupon. Technically, you’re supposed to show it on your smartphone to redeem it via awcoupon.ca. Depending on the location, some staff just don’t know.

aw-sriracha-burger-shop

After work, I decided to grab a quick bite with M to the closest A&W near our place to use the coupon.

aw-sriracha-burger

Success! We acquired the free Sriracha teen burger! It’s originally priced at $5, but you can make it a double teen burger for $6. Since we used the free coupon, they wouldn’t let us upgrade to the double teen burger if we paid a bit more. Since the burger was free, I was still happy.

aw-sriracha-burger-mayo

The Sriracha mayo is quite spicy and doesn’t take much like Sriracha at all. It reminded me more of a chipotle mayo but a few notches spicier.

Chop n Toss is a newer addition to the Metropolis at Metrotown Food Court located near The Bay. It’s hard to find a somewhat healthier option at the mall. Most items are deep-fried or reheated. When I saw Chop n Toss, I thought I would give it a try.

Throughout June, McDonalds is featuring 5 different ‘Canadian’ menu items for a limited time. It’s supposed to show off the flavour profiles of Canada.

I swear, this will be my last post about McDonalds this month ok? I finally finished trying all 5 items for their Summer promotion.

mcd-nanaimo-bar-sundae

Chocolate Nanaimo Sundae has the soft vanilla ice cream base, with fudge and the Nanaimo crumble on top.

mcd-nanaimo

It really reminds me of the Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake because of the different textures and it has similar ingredients. Not bad at all. It was a pleasant surprise. The crumble is a tad sweet, but it still is missing that classic yellow cream thats part of a Nanaimo bar.

Being from British Columbia, I thought it was weird how it represents our province.

mcd-canada

Throughout June, McDonalds is featuring 5 different ‘Canadian’ menu items for a limited time. It’s supposed to show off the flavour profiles of Canada.

It’s finally here! MCLOBSTER! I’ve been waiting years to get my hands on this because I didn’t want to travel to the East Coast. It costs $7.49 for only the sandwich, but if you want the combo, it is around $10. Definitely more expensive than their other menu items.

mclobster3

The McLobster represents the Atlantic provinces. In the soft buttery roll is shredded lettuce and the lobster/lemon/sauce/celery mixture. I’m not exactly sure whats in it, but there is a dominant lemon taste.

What I found with the sandwich is that it is VERY inconsistent when it comes to the amount and quality of lobster.

I went with about 10 of my coworkers to McDonalds and the group consensus was that it was decent, but they wouldn’t order it again. It was fun to try and tell others they tried it.

mcd-mclobster1

This one didn’t have large chunks but it it had lot of smaller pieces. More like a mush.

mclobster-2

This one had 2 huge pieces but the middle was quite sparse. I’m sure they have some sort of quality control, but it’s really not seen. When I went on Instagram, the amount of filling varied so much.
