McDonald’s Canada exclusively launched 300 bottles of the Chinese Szechuan Sauce to promote the World Taste Tour new menu offerings and we were one of the lucky recipients of a bottle. I blog a lot about McDonalds and it’s something nostalgic that always brings me back to my childhood. When I started my blog back in 2010, McDonalds items were always so fun to write about, plus it made for some very popular content. Even last year when I wrote about the bottled McChicken, Filet-o-fish and Big Mac Sauce coming to Canadian grocery stores, the whole world went bonkers.

With the arrival of the Chinese Szechuan Sauce, the first question on everyone’s mind is if this is the same sauce as what the United States got. McDonalds Canada states that this is not the same Szechuan sauce and is a unique Canadian recipe. I’ve never tried the US version, so I wouldn’t know if its similar or not. Take a look at the ingredients and maybe one of you can help identify it through the ingredients list. The sauce comes straight from McDonalds Canada if you look closely at the label and can’t be found in any retail store.

I contemplated for a weekend if I should open this or not and I realized I’m not a true fan if I didn’t eat it and share it. So I got my 10 pack of McNuggets and ate it all by myself. To my surprise, the sauce was good. It is like an elevated version of the sweet and sour sauce with more garlic, ginger, a kick of spice.

A majority of people will be enjoying the Chinese Szechuan Sauce in the Chinese Szechuan Burger only available until July 1st. There are 80 bottles of this sauce up for grabs at Daily Hive Canada if you enter their contest.

I’ll be personally keeping my bottle and sharing it around this Summer for all the BBQ parties with friends and family. If you want to come all the way to Vancouver to have some, I’ll be happy to share. 🙂

A new dessert is at McDonalds Canada this Summer inspired by France for their World Taste Tour.

French Crème Brûlée McFlurry

The French Crème Brûlée McFlurry is available from June 18th to July 29th. This is your regular vanilla soft serve with caramelized sugar pieces and crème brûlée syrup. You can get this in regular size or snack size. I went with the snack size since did weren’t quite sure if we would like it or not.

When it arrived at the tables, it looked like there was a sprinkling of the caramelized sugar pieces on top and integrated throughout. Upon the first few bites, it is pretty sweet and left me a bit thirsty. The sugar pieces added some texture but not the type of texture that we wanted for dessert. It was a little bit hard and distracting. The crème brûlée syrup really added to the extra sweetness, but thats what is to be expected with a Crème Brûlée McFlurry.

We both wouldn’t order this again and would stick to our usual Oreo McFlurry.

Don’t forget, this isn’t the only new International inspired menu at McDonalds over the next month as they take customers on a World Taste Tour.

I love it when McDonalds comes up with new menu items throughout the year. With their World Taste Tour launching from June 18 till July 29 with 5 new items.

Chinese Szechuan Burger

The Chinese Szechuan Burger is available June 18th to July 1st. It has 100% Canadian beef topped with Szechuan sauce, crispy wontons, tomato, leaf lettuce, grilled onions, and mayo, on a toasted black and white sesame seed bun.

A lot of people are going crazy over the Szechuan sauce as it was popular in the United States and popularized by Rick and Morty. McDonalds Canada states that this is not the same Szechuan sauce and is a unique Canadian recipe. I’ve never tried the US version, so I wouldn’t know if its similar or not.

I liked the larger beef patty, crispy wontons and that Szechuan sauce, which makes this burger stand out.

Don’t forget, this isn’t the only new International inspired menu at McDonalds over the next month as they take customers on a World Taste Tour.

I love it when I see new items at A&W. They recently introduce their Cod Burger and Cod Wrap for a limited time only. They have never had a fish burger on the menu yet, so this give customers a new option. I got this for lunch as a meal and upgraded it to onion rings instead of fries.

Cod Burger

You will find hand cut strips of sustainably sourced cod, coleslaw and tartar sauce between two buns. As the cod is in strips, it was like fish sticks, but more moist of course. The cod held tightly between the bun and didn’t shift too much. The sandwich itself isn’t too large, so I felt like I needed the onion rings and drink to get to that point.

A&W has partnered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to be able to get their burger and wrap certified as wild and sustainable. It’s a big step as not all fast food companies can say their seafood is caught with sustainable practices and keep the oceans well balanced to keep the ocean healthy.

Catch the Cod Burger or the Cod Wrap for the limited time since you never know when it will be off the menu.

When in Hawaii, taking a trip to McDonalds to see new items that aren’t available in Canada is what I find so much fun. I saw that they had Kona Iced Coffee and Taro Pie for a limited time only, so we made a visit.

There are a few McDonalds located in Waikiki and Honolulu, so we went to the closest one to our hotel.

The Taro Pie has chunks of purple taro on the inside, which was slightly sweet. All the filling was encased inside their pie dough deep-fried to a golden brown. I was surprised that the exterior was different than the ones in North America. Maybe I haven’t had a pie in a long time but it felt more flakey.

Upon first bite, I was hooked on the pie. I shared it with my friend but I secretly wanted a few to myself. It was great to try and I would highly recommend this.

The Kona Iced Coffee is a good pairing as it is ice cold for the hot Hawaii weather. Great taste with a little bit of milk and sugar to pair with the taro pie.

KFC Canada has introduced the Waffle Double Down, a creation made of a Belgium waffle, maple aioli sauce, and 2 Big Crunch chicken fillets. It is only available in Canada for a limited time only.

Waffle Double Down

This is a sweet and savoury handheld sandwich. Similar to chicken and waffles but no forks, knives and plates. Not everyone will love the taste, so you gotta know what your tastebuds enjoy. I don’t particularly like mixing sweet and savoury tastes in a meal, but my friend really enjoyed it.

There is a lot of chicken in this sandwich, so we got pretty full from this.

Price

At the particular location I went to in Vancouver, it is $8.99 for the sandwich only.

  • Combo – with fries, and 20oz drink =$9.99
  • Box Meal – with fries, individual side and 20oz drink = $10.99

Price may vary in other locations, but this sandwich definitely isn’t cheap.

History of the Double Down

The Double Down has been pretty popular in Canada since it launched in 2010 made with bacon, cheese, sauce, and the 2 pieces of chicken. Whenever KFC launches a new version of it, people go nuts. Back in 2012, they released the Zinger Double Down exclusive to Canada, which is the original double down, but spicy.

The Waffle Double Down is exclusive for Canada and it is perfectly Canadian with the strong maple taste of the aioli.

McDonalds Canada launched their Big Mac x Bacon collaboration, which is just your regular Big Mac with a sprinkling of bacon. To kick-off the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Big Mac, McDonald’s Canada is bringing back Big Mac Bacon for a limited time only. Their promotion is a little bit weird, which they make it seem fashionable and artsy. Makes no sense to me and they even revamped the packaging just for this new limited time only sandwich.

When you open the box to see the Bacon Big Mac, it’s the same ingredients they would normally have in stores, but they threw in the bacon to this classic item. The Bacon Big Mac includes two 100 per cent Canadian beef patties along with the legendary special sauce, bacon, crisp lettuce, processed cheddar cheese, pickles and onions on a toasted sesame seed bun.

It’s ok and doesn’t add too much to it since the bacon slices are thin. It’s essentially still a big mac with a little something extra.

I love it when Taco Bell comes out with new items in Canada. They released the Naked Chicken Chip and Chickstar this January for a limited time only. My husband told me about it, so we drove to the closes Taco Bell, which was 40 minutes away from Downtown Vancouver. These items were released in the United States last year but now we finally have them in Canada.

We made sure to order a lot of food to make it worth the trip.

Naked Chicken Chips

This is boldly seasoned crispy chicken, served with a zesty nacho cheese sauce. The chicken is marinated white meat and has 6 pieces per order.

It’s decent, but since its thin, you’ll need a lot more food to get full. The nacho cheese sauce was comforting and reminded me of being a kid.

Chickstar

This has the same shape as their crunch wrap, but this has 3 pieces of the Naked Chicken Chips, spicy ranch sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce and diced ripe tomatoes, all wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. I much prefer the other crunch wraps as this seemed like a crispy chicken salad inside a tortilla.

Naked Chicken Chips Big Box or Chickstar Big Box

If you’re feeling hungry, you can order the Big box with either naked chicken chips or chickstar. For $9.69, you get a beef burrito, Doritos Locos Taco, fries supreme and a regular drink.

A&W Canada just launched their ’56 Buddy Burger, ’56 Mama Burger, and ’56 Papa Burger. These burgers were inspired by their start in 1956. A throwback to the ol’ drive-in days with lettuce, tomato, cheese, mozza sauce and beef raised without hormones or steroids.

When I heard about these new burgers, I had to head to my closest A&W and give them a try. We got one of each to do this review.

 ’56 Buddy Burger

This little burger makes for a good snack at $2.99. This is made of lettuce, tomato, A&W seasoning, processed cheddar cheese, grilled onions, and mozza sauce in an unseeded hamburger bun. A good classic burger. Similar to the teen burger but with subtle differences.

 ’56 Mama Burger

This is $5.29 and bigger in size compared to the Buddy Burger. All the same ingredients but just bigger.

 ’56 Papa Burger

The Papa Burger is similar size to the Mama Burger but with an extra beef patty at $6.49.

Final Thoughts

All threes burgers taste the same but just come in different sizes. I personally prefer the ’56 Buddy Burger as a snack. You can’t go wrong with A&W burgers as they are one of the better tasting fast food burgers in Canada. It’s my personal favourite. I still prefer the Teen Burger as my favourite A&W Burger.

Burger King has just launched the Flamin’ Hot Mac n’ Cheetos at locations across the United States. Since I was in New York, I had to go grab some because I’m a huge huge fan of Cheetos.

This portable snack of creamy mac n’ cheese is coated and dusted with Flaming Hot Cheetos. 5 come in each pack and they are pretty large in size, like a super-sized Cheetos puff.

When we took a bite, the exterior was crisp and we could instantly taste all the creamy mac and cheese. The spiciness of the Flaming Hot Cheetos hot afterwards and it had a nice kick. It was fun to give it a try, but I’m not so keep on having more since the bright red colour it a bit scary.

Banh Shop is located in the US Departures area of Vancouver International Airport (YVR). As it’s fairly new, I thought I would give it a try before my flight. They also have this at Pearson International Airport in Toront, DFW International Airport in Texas, and soon Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

I just missed breakfast, so I ordered off the lunch menu at 10am.

It comes all wrapped up if you need it to grab and go to make your flight. I did have a bit of time, so I ate it at the tables.

Grilled Pork Meatball

This banh mi has minced pork marinated with black pepper, Vietnamese caramel glaze and scallions; with a cucumber-cilantro aioli. The sandwich was ok, but you can tell it’s Americanized. It bread was doughy and hard on the outside. The meatballs itself was decent.

It’s a good alternative to the different fast food options in the area, but it’s won’t rock your tastebuds.

What happens when there is a Tim Hortons just meters away from the office? We get lots of sweet treats arriving. This year they have their cute knitted socks imagery on their cups. It seems like all the chains are doing something festive this time of year. It reminds me of a sock monkey.

Some of these limited time treats are:

  • Chocolate Cheesecake Donuts
  • Peppermint Hot Chocolate
  • Snowflake Donuts
  • Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate
  • Strawberry Cheesecake Mini Strudels
  • Raspberry Cheesecake Muffin

My favourite pairings was the Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate and those Strawberry Cheesecake Mini Strudels. I don’t have a huge sweet tooth, but I love having small bites of things.

If you’re in a Tim Hortons and eyeing these treats for the office, these are a few of their holiday items that you can share with your coworkers. I did and it was gone in a blink of an eye, but that does tend to happen when there’s treats in the kitchen.

I got off the plane at Denver International Airport and the first thing I needed in my belly was Chick-Fil-A. We don’t have it in Canada, so I obviously heard all about it and put it on my to-eat list. It had the longest line of all the fast food options at the airport.

Chick-fil-a Chicken Sandwich Entrée

The entree comes with the sandwich, waffle cut fries and a drink. I got unsweetened iced tea as my beverage since I have an addiction to unsweetened teas when I go to the states.

The chicken sandwich was ok, nothing that special. It had good seasoning but I would have like a bit more crunchy texture to it.

The waffle fries were good! Not too salty, which was what I enjoy.

Final Thoughts

I thought it was great to have it at the airport as the first or last thing on the trip. I was pretty damn sad that they close on Sundays due to religious reasons.

When I was in the United States the other week, I saw they has their new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders and it’s not available in Canada. When I travel, I love finding new fast food items. Even though crispy tenders isn’t a new concept, I was at the airport and there weren’t any good options around.

The Buttermilk Crispy Tenders caoe in 4 options – 4 pieces, 6 pieces and 10 pieces.

6 Piece Buttermilk Crispy Tenders

The box is pretty interesting and has 2 slots for the sauces.

You will find the boneless chicken breast strips that are seasoned, battered, breaded, and then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy.

They have a lot of new sauces, but they weren’t good at showing what they were , so I defaulted to honey mustard.

As for the taste, they were ok. for fast food chicken tenders. The breading was somewhat crisp and has a good amount of seasoning in the breading. It’s a good option beyond chicken nuggets if you want something more substantial.

Fast food in the United States always fascinates me, so when I see a place I never heard of, I have to check it out even if it means eating more when I’m already full. While at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, I had a bite at Bojangles, which is a southeastern regional fast food joint, know for their mild cajun seasoning, fried chicken, and buttermilk biscuits. I lined up for a little bit to get a taste of their fried chicken to see how it compares.

I got the one piece chicken breast combo which comes with a drink, biscuit and a side of your choice.

The chicken breast was really crispy on the inside and the mild cajun spice was pretty delicious. Usually breast meat is very tough, but this was juicy. It reminded me of Church’s Chicken in Vancouver but with more seasoning.

The green beans were pretty disappointing like mush. It’s fast food vegetables, so I didn’t expect much from it.

The biscuit was meh, pretty dry in my opinion.

Final Thoughts

For fast food fried chicken, it’s pretty solid. I wish I could have tried a thigh or a drumstick but they ran out and only had breast left. The best part about eating this meal was really the spork. The second greatest utensil besides the chopstick.

Heading to Seattle, we made a stop at Taco Bell in the States for breakfast. It was a long weekend, so we waited at the border and got very hungry. We were browsing a few food options and saw the Breakfast Crunchwrap. They don’t have this in Canada, so we made it a mission to devour this.

Interior

Since it was the morning at 7am, this place was empty. Not a soul in sight except for us and the staff. The breakfast menu looked glorious and we honestly wanted to order everything but we knew we had to control ourselves as we were going to have a long day of eating.

Breakfast Crunchwrap

The breakfast crunchwrap comes in bacon, sausage, or steak. It also has egg, real cheddar cheese, and a full hash brown patty in a very hexagonal, handheld breakfast. I went with the bacon and it wasn’t that great since it was bacon bits. The other girls got sausage patties and it seemed like a better option. Either way, we all still enjoyed it. Canada needs this. Please bring this to Canada.

Sauce

I tried all the sauces from Diablo, Fire, Hot and Mild. I enjoyed the all, but Fire was my favourite of them all. Give them a try and add it to your breakfast crunchwrap.

Final Thoughts

I always get jealous that the states has cooler fast food creations than we do in Canada. Usually it comes out in the States and then finally gets released. Oh well, at least we can always travel and eat ALL the food.

To celebrate 50-years of McDonald’s in Canada, guests from coast-to-coast can enjoy a classic hamburger, at a classic price – in recognition of its 1967 birthday.

McDonald’s is serving $0.67 hamburgers on August 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in every restaurant across Canada, while supplies last! Limit 3 per customer.

Over the last 50 years, McDonald’s Canada has been a place where people, families and communities have come together to share many moments. While it has already been a busy year of celebrations, with the introduction of All-Day Breakfast Selections and launch of McDelivery, this special 67¢ hamburger offer tops things off.

KFC Canada has just introduced their boneless original recipe chicken tenders and I made the mistake of posting about the crispy tenders when I thought I ordered the original recipe chicken tenders. After they kindly told me I had the wrong product, I made it a mission to go out to another location to get the correct tenders. It turns out that some mall locations don’t have the space to create boneless original recipe chicken tenders due to the space constraints. You will have better luck at the stand alone locations. I went to the one near Broadway and Fraser in Vancouver.

Boneless original recipe chicken tenders

We got 8 pieces of original recipe tender, popcorn chicken and lots of honey mustard sauce. The tenders are made with real Canadian farm-raised chicken. The honey mustard sauce is pretty good with a subtle hint of sweetness. We made sure to get lots of it.

All the pieces are different shapes, but very plump and moist. I really like the breading, which KFC is best known for their secret 11 herbs and spices.

Overall, these were delicious tenders. Between the crispy tenders and the boneless original recipe chicken tenders, I would have to go with boneless original recipe chicken tenders. I would definitely get these again.
