To celebrate the release of The Hobbit on December 14th, Dennys and Warner Brothers teamed up to create this amazing new menu. All of the items in the menu makes a reference to characters or items in the movie.

M, Scarface, and I came for some late dinner and we were super delighted that we saw their special menu. If you’re a big fan of the Lord of the Ring Franchise, you’ll go crazy over these cool items on this menu.

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt has sliced turkey breast, savoury stuffing, melted Swiss cheese in a grilled potato bread with a cranberry honey mustard spread. It also came with a side of gravy and seasoned fries.

It was like a turkey dinner in a sandwich! The turkey was a tad dry, but dipping the whole sandwich is gravy made up for the dry meal. Holding the sandwich was quite oily, so make sure you have some napkins.

Shire Sausage Skillet comes on a super hot sizzling skillet. The skillet has a long sausage, red-skinned potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, fire-roasted peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and your choice of 2 eggs. M ordered his eggs poached, so it came on a separate dish. It’s a very hearty meal, which isn’t the most healthy item to order, but it will fill you up.

Frodo’s Pot Roast Skillet has slow-cooked pot roast, herb-roasted carrots, celery, mushrooms, onions, broccoli, seasoned red-skinned potatoes with cheddar cheese and a side of toasted bread. It’s another hearty meal, but Scarface did enjoy the pot roast meat.

With every entrée you order off the special menu, you get a pack of trading cards. There are 12 cards that you can collect.

Inside the pack of cards are 2 cards and a coupon for your next meal. It was super cool since I haven’t opened a pack of trading cards in over 10 years. The last pack of cards I’ve opened were Pokemon cards.

The coupons are not bad deals at all if you are a regular customer. We were not able to use it during this visit since we were only about to use it for future visits.

Overall, the food was cool, but as usual, it’s not the most healthiest item to consume…but we all love to indulge a little!

Pepper Lunch is a fast food outlet that originated from Japan. It is a DIY steakhouse that is mostly found at food courts. They have locations all over Asia. All of the items are presented to you on a hot sizzling plate and you can mix your food and cook it to your liking. Their version of steak isn’t the same as what you would envision from North America.

It is equivalent to Teppan Kitchen in Vancouver’s Aberdeen Mall.

When I went to CityGate for some outlet shopping in Hong Kong, my sister and I ate here since our older sister told us this place was amazing.

There was a huge wait during my visit because they ran out of rice. Since there was no rice, they really couldn’t serve anyone…but they kept taking orders.

They have some plastic food models too so you can see what exactly goes into each dish. I got so hungry waiting for our order. Fast food wasn’t fast.

After 15 minutes, we got our order.

Chicken Steak and BBQ Wagyu comes with a side of rice, bean sprouts, beans, onions, corn, and sauce.

We mixed it all up and it looked very healthy for sure. The taste was ok, but I didn’t find it spectacular.

Beef Pepper Rice was better than the previous dish. We also mixed up this really well and put in all the sauce.

It looked really good and tasted great. I guess it’s best to order the items that is their most popular dish. My sister loved it too.

We ate our food in the food court seat at the mall. There was a lot of people especially on the weekend, so get ready to fight for a seat. Pepper Lunch was healthy as you can see what goes into your meal and cooks on the hot plate.

Mos Burger is a fast food chain from Japan. It has about 14 locations in Hong Kong near the major malls. They have been around since 1972! Mos Burger specializes in burgers! The burgers aren’t even comparable to any fast food joint I’ve been to so far.

They differentiate themselves as being “healthier” and less geasy than their competitors.

Cold Milk Tea was my sisters favorite drink here. You need to mix in liquid sugar into it, so it’s not pre-sweetened.

Hot Green Tea Latte was rich and frothy with a lot of green tea. Yum!

Mos Burger looks amazing! Everything is perfectly placed on the bun, so you can clearly see every layer. There is a patty, mayo, onion, meat sauce, and tomato between soft buns. It tasted really amazing as the meat sauce made the whole burger savory and moist.

Fish Burger has cheese, a fried filet, mayo, and onions between the 2 buns. It looks similar to McDonalds Fish O Filet, but it was slightly better than McDonalds. Very Very close in taste!

Overall, I was very impressed by this fast food chain! Someone should really bring this to Canada!

Earlier this Summer, Starbucks launched their new drinks – “Starbucks Refreshers”. These are cold fruity drinks with “natural energy”. They use green coffee extract, so you get that boost of energy without drinking coffee.

The refreshers come in 2 flavours – Very Berry Hibiscus and Cool Lime.

There was a buy one get one free deal, so I couldn’t give up the chance at trying both and paying way less. I paid in Hong Kong dollars, so it translates to about $3.

Cool Lime is a mix of juice, mint, lime, caffeine, and then shaken with ice. It had a dominant flavour of mint and a secondary taste of the lime. I preferred this over the very berry hibiscus refresher.

Very Berry Hibiscus has not my favorite, but my sister prefered it over the Cool Lime refresher. The berries were not very fresh either.

It’s good that Starbucks is catering to the people who hate the coffee taste, but need the caffeine rush. I personally dislike the taste of both these drinks, but the Cool Lime is slightly better than the Very Berry Hibiscus.

Have you tried these yet?

After having dinner, my friends and I decided to go to McDonalds for round 2 of eating. It’s kinda weird, but I do have a secret obsession with fast food. It’s cheap and it does the trick.

My favorite item of all time is the Bacon Cheese Burger. I don’t know what it is, but I love it.

Drumstick McFlurry is a new item the released recently. They mix chocolate, peanuts, vanilla ice cream, and bit of waffle cone. When you take a bit out of it, it does taste similar to Nestle Drumsticks!

Caramel Baked Pie was very sweet! Perhaps too sweet! It’s a new item too!You do need a coffee to counteract the sweetness.  I can imagine this might go well with a McFlurry. Ask them to blend it up with the McFlurry!

Chocolate Sundae with peanuts is good and brings me back to my childhood. The gooey chocolate with the crunchy nuts. Yum.

What is your favorite McDonald dessert? Do you like any of the new ones?

We took a quick visit to the The Venetian in Macau. It’s an exact copy of the one in Vegas. The whole place was super confusing to walk around and most items were really really expensive.

As I can be pretty cheap sometimes and a huge lover of fast food, we went to McDonalds to grab some drinks before heading to dinner.

The interior was really nice and I guess it had to be as it is in The Venetian. There were lots of people here!

I really love McCafes in Asia, they have lots of variations in drinks.

Since there are so many people, you get a number to wait for your drinks. When its ready, they will bring it to your table.

During the Summer, McDonalds was promoting their Summer drinks – Chocolate Cookie Frappe, Soy Green tea Frappe, and the Himalayan Tea Frappe. We got the small size and they were $27 HKD each.

Chocolate Cookie Frappe was my favorite! It’s very chocolaty and will impress chocolate lovers.

Soy Green tea Frappe was ordered by my little sister and it’s her favorite drink. She will only get this drink at McDonalds.

Himalayan Tea Frappe was ordered by my mom and she thought it was OK. Its light and refreshing, but not as popular as the other 2 flavours.

When I went to KFC in Korea, I loved it so much! I was back in Hong Kong and I was super curious about the KFC here, so I decided to have dinner here with my mom and sister. I know right? How classy.

The menu was slightly different and incorporated more rice items as side dishes.

I have no idea what we ordered but we had a little bit of everything on the menu. I didn’t want to stand in line, so my mom chose what to order.

In the basket we had a mix of waffle fries, spicy and original chicken. The original chicken wasn’t very good. The skin was not crispy and was pretty salty. The spicy chicken on the other hand was really good! Way crispier and juicier too.

The waffle fries were good and crispy.

Mushroom Rice was a side that came with one of the combos. It tasted ok.

Chicken a la King (combo size with meals) tasted ok as well, but you can definitely find better at nearby cafes.

Chicken a la king (Regular size)

Overall, the Hot and Spicy Chicken was the only thing amazing here. The rice dishes were ok, but not great. I would probably only come back for the hot and spicy chicken.

You know it’s fall when you can enjoy some pumpkin spiced lattes. Starbucks is currently promoting two drinks to ring in the Fall season – Salted Caramel Mocha and pumpkin spice latte. KoreanGirl and I were having a chit-chat over some coffee, so we decided to try out the drinks.

Pumpkin Spice Latte was what KoreaGirl ordered. She did enjoy it, but she found it to be very sweet.

Salted Caramel Latte was what I ordered, I didn’t get it with mocha because I don’t like mochas. Instead I substituted it as a latte. The drink was also very sweet. The drink has a few pumps of butternut toffee, so it is sweeter than a normal latte. I would suggest getting it half sweet.

Have you tried their Fall drinks yet? What did you think?

In the United States, they have some crazy menu items at some great prices. It’s always awesome to drive down to the states and try items that are not available in Canada. One of those items was the Smores Pie.

Smores Pie is like a normal pie, but it’s filled with chocolate and marshmallow. You have all the components that go into a smores.

Whats different about this pie is that there is a large slit at the top, so the inside is exposed for all to see.

The smores pies was a tad sweet, but it did have a unique taste. It was like a smores, but less messy!

20 Piece McNuggets ($4.99) is so cheap in the states! You could easily order 100 and not break your wallet! This location didn’t have a larger box for them, so it was split off into 2 boxes.

It’s quite hard to eat 20 all by yourself unless you are super super hungry. My friend and I just split these.

Have you had the chance to try the smore pie or bought yourself a ton of McNuggets?

After coming back from the Ten Thousand Buddhist Monestary in Sha Tin, we went to a Home Square mall and it contained an IKEA. This location is the largest in Hong Kong with 8,400 sq meters. I really wanted to see how the store layout and food compared to how it is in Vancouver.

It also won one “Best Restaurant Awards in 2012” for a Fast Food Restaurant on OpenRice.com.

All of the items in the IKEA bistro are similar to what you can find in North America. The item that I noticed that they have is popcorn. I haven’t seen this in the IKEAs in Vancouver.

There is also the Swedish Food Market where you can find frozen Swedish Meat Balls, fish, jam, juice, etc.

At the IKEA Restaurant, they have a few of the usual items like Swedish meatballs, vegetarian medallions, shrimp cocktail, and apple pie.

Their kids meal is a bit different too. Spaghetti, corn and sausages.

We were still full from a large lunch, so my sister and I got bottled drinks.

Grapefruit Juice was good and similar to the usual bottle juices.

Organic Soy Milk isn’t sweetened, so it tastes pretty bad if you are not used to drinking unsweetened soy milk. It is healthy for you, but I found it so hard to drink.

Another thing I found that was super different was the washing machine in the kitchens! It’s usual in Hong Kong. With the limited space, that’s where it goes instead of the dish washer.

TaiwaneseGirl spots something called McBites on Instagram and lures KoreanGirl and I on an adventure to Seattle for McDonalds McBites and outlet shopping. It was a spontaneous decision, but I really wanted to see what these mysterious McBites were all about. They are like popcorn chicken from KFC, but McDonalds Style. they recently introduced Spicy McBites.

It’s available in the United States, but not in Canada.

We all decided to get the spicy McBite meals. The interior of McDonalds was crazy air-conditioned, so we sat outside.

The drinks are a bit different than the ones in Canada. They have Powerade and Hi C.

The meal cost $5.42 after tax for a regular size of McBites, fries and drink.

The Spicy Chicken McBites comes in the regular box, they don’t have any specialized packaging for the spicy version.

The McBites are a bit smaller than McNuggets, but there is enough in the box to get full.

The packaging in surprisingly ingenious! There is a slot to put in your dipping sauce.

It’s chicken meat inside and the coating of the McBites was similar to the coating of the chicken strips. It wasn’t very spicy and was a bit bland. You definitely need some sauce to go along with these. I was a bit disappointed by these and KFC definitely has better popcorn chicken.

Have you tried the Spicy McBites yet?

I’ve been told the KFC in Asia is crazy good because of the quality of chickens. I heard KFC was even better in Korea, I really couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat something “finger lickin good”. I had a good amount of time before I had to head to my gate to take the plane back to Hong Kong.

I ordered a 2 piece meal with a coke. I had the option to have it original or spicy. Of course I had it spicy since I was in Korea.

I could not put the chicken down! It was so good! It was very crispy on the outside and the meat was very moist. It wasn’t too spicy, but it did have the right amount of kick to it. YUM! I was very proud to be lickin my fingers at the end.

Even Colonel Sanders want you to lick his fingers. This statue looks a bit awkward, perhaps someone stole his box of chicken.

I was strolling through my last day of Korea finding a McDonalds to try to find a Kimchi Burger or something really cool and different than in North America. I wandered off into the Gangnam area and I found so many shops and restaurants.

Some items were similar to wat you would find in North America, but I had my eye on the Bulgogi Burger. They even have calories too so you know how much you are consuming. I also noticed they don’t sell fish!

It even has its own special wrapper! I laughed when I saw ” A sauce sensation”.

Inside you have the pork patty with the bulgogi marinade. It also has lettuce and mayo inside. The marinade made this burger sticky to eat if you aren’t careful. I wasn’t a big fan of this since it was a bit sweet and salty in some ways.

It was still fun trying out an item I would not get in Canada.

Kraze Burger is Korea’s burger restaurant. It was founded in 1998 and was the first restaurant specializing in hamburgers in Korea. They have locations all over Korea even the airport. As I was in COEX Mall, I knew I had to find Kraze Burgers to try some famous burgers in Korea. They are slowly expanding all over the world.

It was a long walk from the subway as the mall is very confusing to navigate, especially if you are a tourist. When I got here, there was a line out the door at 8pm! I waited about 10 mins to find a seat.

The K.B Original has 100% Pure Beef Patty, one slice of cheese, lettuce, fresh tomato slice, fresh onion slice, chili sauce, homemade pickles on a Baked Bun. They have a lot of crazy types of burgers but I really wanted to try the original Kraze Burger. It was a delicious solid burger that satisfied me, but it was expensive! I probably could have gotten 2 meals for the price of this burger.

Overall, it’s delicious but if you are in town for a short while, might as well skip this and try more traditional Korean food.

Burger King in South Korea serves different desserts than in Canada. Since I heard they had patbingsu (팥빙수) – shaved ice dessert, I needed to go see how it compared to other places. Eating patbingsu is very popular during the hot humid Summer time.

The menu had a lot of different desserts. Lots of ice cream and cold drinks. I was very tempted to order everything, but I only have one stomach.

Patbingsu comes with a bed of shaved ice, topped with canned pineapples, red bean, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and a dollop of ice cream. I was more impressed by the patbingsu at Burger King than at Miss Lee Cafe.

It tasted ok, but the red bean was very strange to me…but it’s probably because I don’t like red bean. The canned fruit was ok considering it was a fast food chain.

I wasn’t use to eating this type of dessert, but it was ok to me. It’s still cool to see the different desserts around the world offered at Burger King. If you are in Korea, definitely try Patbingsu at other restaurants that specialize in it….probably not Burger King.

Through all the pouring rain, I made my way to Dongdaemun to see the Great East Gate. It was very large, but there really wasn’t much to do except take a picture of it. I then got hungry, so I do what I do best…eat!

KoreanGirl told me I had to check out Lotteria. Lotteria is one of South Korea’s largest fast food chains.

Walking into the restaurant, it kinda reminded me of McDonalds since the color scheme is very similar. There’s all sorts of people here from Ajuma’s to young couples.

Once you order, you get this electronic device that vibrates once your order is ready. My meal took a bit longer than usual and the server said it would be about 5 minutes. I didn’t really mind since they offer free wifi.

I ordered the Hot Crispy Chicken Burger combo with fries and a coke. The fries were ok, but I still prefer McDonalds fries much more.

The best part of this meal is of course the burger that comes with the meal. Since they were promoting this new burger, I thought I should give it a try! Plus, I do love spicy food.

The lettuce and tomato were fresh, plus the chicken was very very juicy on the inside and packed with a lot of heat! It lives up to the name – hot crispy chicken burger. I was sweating and crying from the spiciness. Nonetheless, it was very yummy!! Really good fastfood here!

After going to eat, I wandered off towards the park in the middle on Dongdaemun and saw there was The Little Prince Exhibit. I received the book from M several years ago and I fell in love with the story an illustrations.

If you are a big fan, you’ll love the original drawing, keep sakes, and the history behind the book. It costs 12,000 Won and it wasn’t a very large exhibit. I expected a bit more since it was a bit expensive.

I finally visited McDonalds in Hong Kong since I get very hot one afternoon. To my surprise, their McCafe’s sell completely different items than in Canada! This is the best part about travelling- discovering new fast food items. Seriously, I love fast food and differing menu items across the world.

They have introduced 2 new drinks  for this Summer – Soy Green Tea Frappe and Himalayan Tea Frappe. You can alternatively get them hot instead of cold.

The prices are in Hong Kong Dollars, so, just divide it by 7.8 and you should get the approximated Canadian price. It’s not exactly cheap, but I just had to try it.

Medium Iced Soy Green tea Frapp is my little sisters addiction! She enjoyed the whipped cream on top.

Hot Soy Green Tea was pretty good! It wasn’t too sweet, but it was yummy and creamy. Definitely one of my favorites but after I saw how they made it, it wasn’t very magical. I’ll get to it at the end of this review. Nonetheless, I would still order it again.

Medium Himalayan Tea had a very unique taste. I couldn’t figure out what it tasted like

They even have super cool cheesecakes and Lamingtons. Lamingtons is an Australian sponge cake. I’m still waiting for CommunityChannel to post up the video about how to make lamingtons. I should stop having hopes that one day she will make the video 🙁

Anyways, the drinks at McDonalds were great, but it seemed so simple to make! The staff just poured soy milk into a blender and put in a few scoops of powder and blended it up. Thus, that was how the drink was created. If you are in Hong Kong and in an area that has these items available, give it a try!

Heading to the airport for a red-eye flight to Korea makes a person skip dinner. We headed off to Ocean Empire at the airport for a quick dinner before our flight. We didn’t know what to choose since there were a good amount of options available. We eventually chose Ocean Empire because they were serving congee. We’ve been eating so much dim sum that we thought this would be a healthier option.

We ordered a variety of different congees and some side dishes.

Chinese donut wrapped in rice roll with soy sauce was disgusting. It wasn’t very fresh and the donut was a bit stale.

Fried Noodles was cold and was lacking in flavour.

Radish Cake was hot, but wasn’t very impressive tasting. It didn’t have a lot of ingredients embedded inside either.

All the differing congees that we ordered basically sucked. It had minimal flavour and is essentially fast food congee. They just dump in the ingredients you want in a generic congee soup.

Overall, I was not impressed by the quality at all. It was barely passable and the attitude of the staff was horrible. The cashier seemed like he was always yelling at the cooks to be quiet.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Just don’t eat here unless you’re desperate
