Fast Food

Category

I told you I love fast food. Wendy’s in my opinion is the best when it comes to bacon. Plus, their bacon looks so much better than McDonalds or any other fast food chain. M and I came here one night because he really wanted to try the chili cheese fries.

We chose to dine in, but its always very depressing. Empty and with super outdated furniture. I always hate eating in the restaurant. I prefer eating it in the car hahahahahahaaha. Yes, I can be quite a slob sometimes too.

The ‘W’ Sandwich has 2 beef patties, two slices of cheese, thick-sliced tomato, and sauce in a bun. M enjoyed all that meaty goodness.

Asiago Ranch Chicken Sandwich has white meat chicken breasts topped with smoked bacon, asiago cheese, ranch sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes. It tasted ok, but the chicken breast had way too much pepper. The bacon inside this was very good!!

Chili Cheese Fries contain sea salt, meaty chili, melted cheese, and shredded cheese. It tasted alright, but it could have had more cheese. M enjoyed it. I kinda dislike beans, so I didn’t like it very much. I probably wouldn’t order it again.

Overall, the experience this time was alright. I would just stick with getting any burger with bacon. If you don’t get bacon, you’ll be sorry. Get the Baconator or the Jr. bacon cheese burger!!

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I have a secret addiction to fast food. Give me a burger and fries and I’ll slurp it right up. M and I were at Metrotown in the food court and were feeling hungry, so we stopped at Arby’s. It’s kinda our go-to place when we don’t want to make too many decisions. The roast beef is quite yummy and addictive.

This is the only location that we have Arby’s because it’s convenient.

Theres lots of seats, but it can get very crowded at peak hours. M and I have a tradition of always going down to the pet store to check out the kittens after lunch.

We grabbed a bunch of things and found a seat.

Don’t forget to grab some Horseradish sauce and Barbecue sauce! You can add it to your fries or into your burger.

Curly Fries are a must! It’s crispy and golden brown and is so much better than normal fries. Some curly fries can be really curly and some other not so much.

Large Roast Beef has heaps of roast beef sandwiched between a sesame bun.

Look at the layers. You probably would want to add the barbecue sauce to this.

Bacon & Cheddar Deluxe has the thinly sliced roast beef with lettuce, mayo, cheese and bacon in between the sesame bun.

The bacon was a bit of a disappointment since it was so small.

Thats the cross section of it. It tasted ok, but I felt the lettuce and bacon didn’t add much to the sandwich.Perhaps next time, I’ll just get the sandwich with cheese and roast beef.

Overall, if you like meaty sandwiches with loads of roast beef, go to Arby’s.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is awesome Mexican Fast Food in America. Since there were a few locations in New York, CanuckGirl and I decided to go have a cheap dinner during our first night in New York. There aren’t any locations in Vancouver, so we were definitely craving some.

Their hours on Mondays to Sundays are 11am to 10pm.

Burrito Bowl has your choice of rice or beans, meat and additional toppings. I loaded by bowl up. I prefer the burrito bowl over the usual burrito is because it’s easier to eat.

The meat I chose was the carnitas, which is braised pork. The meat was very tender and juicy. I added additional guacamole and the server was very very generous. She put on tons of guacamole and sour cream! Yum!

Overall, Chipotle Mexican Grill is awesome fast food. The quality is pretty standard amongst all locations, so the taste shouldn’t vary too much. It’s easy to do take-out too.

KFC has brought back a much talked about sandwich – the Double Down.

Having had a horrible experience with the original Double Down, I was quite hesitant to try it agin. This time around, they have a new version too – Zinger Double Down. This is a spicy version. It only available in Canada!

When you open the box, this little guy is wrapped up in a wrapper to avoid your hands from getting all dirty from eating it.

You can see the 2 pieces of deep-fried chicken, Monterey jack cheese, bacon and spicy mayo sauce.

Upon closer inspection you can see everything inside. Not a pretty sight.

The bacon is quite sad, it’s quite limp and not crunchy. I love crunchy bacon. You can tell the chicken pieces are spicy, just take a look at the spice in the meat.

After taking a bite of the sandwich, I did enjoy it way more than the original Double Down. The sandwich is indeed spicy and it pairs well with the mayo, cheese and bacon. Since the spice is quite strong, it doesn’t taste very salty anymore.

I would definitely order this again and perhaps eat it with a bottle of beer. I am pretty sure it would pair well with beer. It’s only available for a limited time, so get it before its gone.

It was a busy day in the office and I needed something quick to devour for lunch. I just popped downstairs to the A&W and got a 3 piece chubby chicken strip combo with onion rings and a coke. It cost me about $10, which was super expensive!

The 3 chicken strips were of uneven sizes. From the picture, you can see that the middle piece is considerable smaller than the others. The chicken strips also seem burnt and over cooked. This made me a bit sad, but I ate it anyways since I already paid for it. Make sure you get some honey mustard to go along with this.

I always enjoy the onion rings! Its always perfectly seasoned on the outside and has real onions. My only complaint is that sometimes the batter does fall off.

All in all, it was a decent, quick, unhealthy lunch.

Last week, A&W introduced their new line of burgers called the “Buddy Burgers“. These are smaller burgers that are under $3. Pretty good prices and good for people who don’t wanna eat so much. Their images look really good, but in reality they don’t look very appealing. I think A&W is starting to run out of names.

They have 4 different burgers, but the variations don’t really vary too much.

Little Buddy Burger ($1.75) they messed up my order…imagine this without the cheese. It has one patty, mayo, and caramelized onions between the toasted buns.

Little Buddy Burger with Cheese ($2.25) is similar to the one above but WITH cheese.

Buddy Burger ($2.45) has 2 patties with mayo and the caramelized onions between toasted buns.

Buddy Burger with Cheese ($2.95) is the same above but with the cheese.

You can make any of the above a combo by adding $3 for fries and a drink. If you are wondering if I ate all 4 of these with a combo…yes I did…I was way too full afterwards. A normal person will be ok with just 2 burgers to get full.

The burgers were ok, but I did like the addition of the grilled onions. The 4 burgers don’t vary much except for the extra patty and cheese. Even though these are cheap, I probably wouldn’t order them again.

I was walking at Metrotown and I saw that McDonalds has new sandwiches called the ‘McBistro’. They are a new line of chicken sandwiches, which are for people who are a bit health conscious. You can have the option of having grilled chicken or fried chicken in your sandwich. The sandwiches come in 3 types:

  • Chicken BLT
  • Southwest Chicken
  • Swiss Mushroom Melt

A combo costs $7.59 and just the sandwich is $5.19. These were the prices at Metrotown, but may be different at other locations.

Southwest Chicken McBistro with fried chicken was nothing interesting. It just had lettuce, swiss cheese, tomato, southwest sauce and the patty between the whole grain bun.

The fried chicken is so uniform in shape that it looks kinda gross. For a second I almost mistook it for a hashbrown. We didn’t take a particular liking to it since it was just so plain. I think it would have been better if it was the grilled chicken instead of the deep fried.

Chicken BLT McBistro with grilled chicken has mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, and chicken between the whole grain bun.

The chicken looked pretty good and natural. It didn’t have the same uniform shape as the fried chicken. The chicken looked like it was real chicken meat.

There was also a good amount of bacon on the sandwich, so I was not disappointed. I would have to say the Chicken BLT is probably the best out of the bunch. I haven’t tried the swiss mushroom, but that might be good.

Overall, the McBistros are pretty good only if you get the grilled chicken option. They are probably only available for a limited time, so get them before they’re gone.

Chipotle is a chain fast food restaurant in the United States, they have a few on the eastern side of Canada too. Since TaiwaneseGirl was raving about how she wanted it SO badly, we went to grab some lunch. We arrived 30 minutes too early, so we sat in the car and waited for them to open. Surprisingly, we were not the only ones waiting for their delicious Mexican food. There was already about 5 people in front of us as we went inside.

The inside was nice and large. You line up, build your item, pay and eat!

Lots of space and even though it is empty in this picture…it got full fast! People really love Chipotles for some reason.

You first choose from a burrito, bowl, taco or a salad. Then, you can choose what you want to put inside. They have so many options! Oh hey look… calories!

Steak Bowl + Guac ($6.35 +$1.80) may look plain but its amazing inside. It’s like a burrito but without the flour tortilla. TaiwaneseGirl put everything in here and asked for extras, thus her bowl became quite tall. She really liked it. Guac is extra, but its worth it!

Steak Bowl + Guac ($6.35 +$1.80) CanuckGirl got the same thing, but didn’t get as much toppings compared to TaiwaneseGirl.

Caritas Burrito + Guac ($6.35 +$1.80) was stuffed with so much filling, it was so hard for the lady to wrap up. It was a bit messy, but there’s a bowl for you in case it all falls apart. In the end, I just ripped it apart and ate it like a bowl. Delicious and I love the tenderness of the carnitas. Yum!

You can also get free water too. Just ask and you’ll get a cup.

Overall, we quite enjoyed this experience and later in the day…we bought a few takeout orders back to Canada. In a way, it was comparable to Red Burrito in Vancouver. Its best to get the bowl a takeout if you aren’t intending to eat it on the same day. Everything still tastes good.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Under $10
  • Delicious steak and caritas
  • Lots of free parking
  • Lots of seating
  • Children friendly with kids menu

Tim Hortons has been advertising their $1 lattes until February 19th, 2012. They are trying hard to promote these drinks. They are definitely trying to rival other companies like Starbucks and McDonalds by creating more types of coffee. Since I needed a bit of a caffeine boost in the morning, I grabbed a small latte and a honey cruller.

The Latte ($1) was pretty bad in my opinion. The price point of the Lattes are very appealing, but everything is automatically dispensed from a machine. I asked for very little sugar to be added and it tasted quite sweet. I couldn’t finish the rest of it. I am usually not too picky, but I’d rather go back to the their regular coffee or walk a few extra blocks to go to McDonalds.

Honey Cruller Donut is my all time favorite out of all their donuts! It sweet on the outside and light and airy on the inside.

I would stay away from their lattes if you are a regular coffee drinker. Nothing good can come out of it.

McDonald’s introduced this new item – an Oreo Cookies N’ Cream Pie. I heard about it over Twitter, so I thought I would just go to a random McDonald’s to find one. The one I went to had zero signage and it wasn’t on the menu, but the workers knew what I was talking about. They indeed had the pie.

The strange thing is that the new pie doesn’t even has a special box, it’s just a generic Baked Pie box with images of fruit on it. Perhaps it’s a trial product or something. It cost about a buck.

The pie does not look like any of their other pies. Its thinner and smaller. Even though it looks dark, its is not burnt. It’s just a large chocolate cookie-like shell.

The inside is filled with this fluffy marshmallow type of filling. Kinda like the spreadable marshmallow in a can. It was really good and I was pleasantly surprised.

It wasn’t too sweet and was the perfect size. I gobbled it up and left me wanting more.

Every time I go to a food court, I can’t help but drool over Arbys. Anything with carbs and meat satisfies my cravings. Did you know Arby’s changed their slogan to “It’s Good Mood Food”? It’s a weird slogan, but I don’t think I was in a good mood during or after the meal. Just normal.haha.

Arby’s Reuben Sandwich has corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on marbled rye bread. M said it was alright, but nothing spectacular. Typical food court food.

Classic Beef n’ Cheddar Sandwich has a decent amount of sliced meat with red ranch sauce on the bottom and a big good of cheddar on top in a bun.

I wish the cheddar cheese was a bit more spread out since it took me a while to get to the cheddar when biting into it. It was alright as well.

Curly Fries are a must. Well seasoned and has a combination of super curly fries and somewhat straight ones.

You can also grab a few packs of their signature sauces. Horsey sauce, which has a little bit of a mayo+horseradish taste to it.  Can be spicy for a few people. Then there is also the Arby’s Sauce, which is their BBQ sauce. It’s a bit sweet and it’s already on some of the sandwiches already.

Overall, the food was alright for food court standards. Its still one of my go-to place in the food court if I don’t know what to order.

On Christmas Day, M was getting a bit hungry and headed to McDonalds since they were one of the only places open around midnight.

We discovered they had 2 new smoothies – Mango Pineapple and Strawberry Banana smoothies. I’ve seen these available in the States since the Summer, but it was just recently that they are selling these in Canada. They comes in S, M and L for about $2 – $3.

The Mango Pineapple was very nice and fruity with a dominant flavour of mango. I really liked it because it wasn’t overly sweet.

The Strawberry Banana tasted like the usual smoothies you would find at Jugo Juice. M liked it .

Overall, it’s a good alternative to their other drinks, but I am still not ready to believe these are really healthy for you. Tastewise, its probably one of the better smoothies you can get from a fast food joint.

Have you tried these yet?

My sister and I didn’t want to make lunch…and we had a HUGE craving for some fried chicken. We always have these random moments where we love to overindulge ourselves with fat. Plus, Church’s Chicken is SO good!! We went down to the closest location and ordered a 10 piece meal with gravy and fries. It ended up to be about $25ish after tax.

It comes with an assortment of thighs and drumsticks. I personally prefer all the thighs because it has more delicious skin and more meat.

The best part is the gravy. I know it might seem like i’m a fat ass, but I LOVE dunking the fried skin into the gravy!! Do you do this too?

The gravy isn’t fresh, it’s made from a huge pack of powder mixed with water.

The fries are pretty normal, nothing special about them. They go soggy after a while too, so eat them fast or reheat them in the oven.

Overall, good stuff and ten thousand times better than KFC!

 Words of Wisdom:

  • Check for coupons in the mail…sometimes there are some
  • Take out is best
  • Sometimes they have good combos
  • Jalapeno Poppers and chicken tenders are awesome
  • Free Wifi

I was at school and decided to go to the food court for lunch. I was craving some pizza and I remember Extreme Pita having some pita type of pizzas. I had it at another location and it was pretty good. I thought I would indulge and grab a pizza. Most people usually get pita’s..but I felt a bit different today.

….I actually should have stuck with the pita….and you will see why.

Pepperoni Extreme Pizza (~$7) has pizza sauce, pepperoni and mozzarella on a pita wrap bread thing.

What I found very strange is that the person making my pizza had no idea how to make it! She had to look for instructions to put it together. Seeing that it’s really only 3 toppings, it shouldn’t too difficult. Clearly it was a bit challenging to them since you couldn’t see any pepperoni on this pizza. It was all hidden under the copious amounts of mozzarella. It took them a while to make this and it tasted really bad! It wasn’t crispy at all and was just a pile of cheese….that drowned out the pepperoni. They should probably rename this ‘Mozzarella Extreme Pizza’.

I’d probably never come back here…probably never go for the pita either since  it was that disgusting.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Don’t order the pizza

I was wandering around SFU Surrey and I was pretty hungry. M went to KFC to get their big box meal and I went to Taco Bell to get their other big box meal.

My Taco Bell Big Box Meal was so big that all the contents could not even fit inside! It was either $8 or $10, but it was pretty huge.

It comes with:

  • Beef Hard Taco
  • Double Decker Taco
  • Crunchwrap Supreme
  • Nachos and Cheese
  • Cinnamon Twists
  • Regular drink

The nachos and cheese were alright. Nothing very special about this. It’s one of those items no one really orders from the regular menu.

The beef hard taco is pretty mediocre as well. It has meat, lettuce and cheese in a hard shelled taco.

This time I finally got lots of meat with it. The only good part is the meat. There is not a lot of cheese on it either.

The Double Decker Taco comes in a soft tortilla with beans with another hard shelled taco and inside is lettuce beef and a bit of cheese. I think this location made this pretty bad since there was so little beef inside.

I am not a bean type of person, so I really hated this taco.

Crunchwrap Supreme is my favorite out of all the items in the Big Box Meal. It has beef, cheese, hard tortilla, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes all wrapped in a grilled soft tortilla. It’s best to grab some hot sauce to accompany this crunchwrap since it makes it so much tastier.

Overall, you get a lot of stuff from the Big Box Meal and you can discover what you like and what you don’t like. I kinda wish I had Taco Time instead.

M was on the hunt for the famous Whistle Dog from A&W. It was popularized by the  ‘All She Wrote’ song by T.I. and Eminem. In the lyrics, Eminem raps “they say McDonalds isn’t a restaurant well I guess I’m wrong
but if you gon tell me that the A&W aint the spot for the best hot dogs you can get the “F” on dawg”.

I’m not exactly sure why it was in the song, but it really made M want to get this. I found hot dogs at A&W so interesting because people normally order the chicken or the burgers. I’ve never ever heard of a whistle dog until now. It’s also pretty hidden on their menu and not available at certain locations. The larger A&Ws will have it, but express places like the Waterfront locations don’t have it.

For $3.60, the whistle dog comes on a toasted hot dog bun with relish, sausage, processed cheese and bacon. The sausage is nicely butterflied , so you get more sausage taste from every bite. They probably don’t make this that often, so M had to wait 5 minutes for them to prepare it. Not very ‘fast’ for fastfood.

It’s obviously not comparable to the usual hotdog, but it’s not too bad. We really loved the addition of the bacon and the gooey cheese. For $4 after tax, I might as well just make it myself at home.

Have you tried this before?

CanuckGirl and I took an impromptu trip to the states. We shopped till we dropped, but we didn’t want to over indulge on food too. Soo…what we did was go to Costco for lunch. I always wanted to go to Costco in the states because of their Churros. They don’t sell churros in Canada’s Costcos.

Hotdog + Pop Combo ($1.50 USD) is basically the same in Canada. It’s an all beef hotdog thats 1/4 of a pound! This is not your sissy hotdog. You’ll be satisfied eating this! You can add mustard, ketchup, relish and even chopped onions!

Twisted Soft Serve Ice Cream ($1.35 USD) will bring back memories of your childhood when you take a good look at it. Remember when McDonalds had the twist cone? You get a lot of ice cream for what you pay for, it’s literally a whole cup! If you get this with the hotdog, you will be full.

Churro ($1 USD) is warm on the inside, crispy on the outside and coated in cinnamon and sugar! I love churros and what made me so drawn to this was how long this was! I’ve had churros in Vancouver and I’ve never seen it so large.

While I was holding it to get ready to eat, I felt like I could cast a spell on everyone around me. Alakazam! The churro tasted great, but what sucked so bad about this churro was how you would get so dirty! The cinnamon and sugar would just be falling everywhere.

Overall, I think meals at Costco are worth the price. CanuckGirl and I were so happy because we only spent a measly $3 USD on lunch. You might be thinking to yourself…”I don’t have a Costco Card, thus I can not eat here”. False! CanuckGirl and I forgot our Costco Cards at home, so we snuck in from the exit and pretended we were going to customer service. Works every time!!

Words of Wisdom:

  • 1/4 pound hot dogs +pop combo
  • Pizza seemed pretty popular too and HUGE slices
  • No Costco card needed
  • Dirt Cheap!
  • Under $5 per meal

I went to grab some lunch on the road and I always wanted some Wicked Stix. I heard from a friend that they are so good and I should try it out. I really doubted I would get full just by the wicked stix, so I saw they were selling the Wicked Stix Big Box Meal, so I opted for that choice.

Like all advertisements, it does not look like the advertisement at all. I know it wouldn’t look like the image, but thats what you get with fast food.

The Wicked Stix had no resemblance to the  advertisement and didn’t look like 4 uniform blobs, it looked a bit pornographic to me, but maybe I’m just stick minded.

The taste of the Wicked Stix was not very hot, so I asked from extra hot sauce to go with it. Taste good with the hot sauce and lives up to their name. The taste of it was similar to their chicken and popcorn chicken. Same batter as most of their products.

The Chicken Sandwich had a fried chicken patty, mayo, and lettuce on 2 buns. The sandwich was pretty flattened and looked very miserable. The best part is only the chicken because its the main showcase of this burger. The untoasted bun did nothing to enhance the flavours. The lettuce was pretty minimal and the big glop of mayo just made it so gross.

The Coleslaw is probably one of their better sides. It has a little bit of wasabi kick, but I really don’t know if it is. It does have this very sharp taste.

The fries tasted really good since I guess they use some delicious oil to fry it in. They aren’t super crispy and after a while, they do get pretty soggy.

Overall, it was just ok. Wicked Stix was alright if you add more hot sauce! Everything else is pretty meh. Might as well just go to McDonalds. If I really wanted chicken, I would probably go to Church’s Chicken!

Have you tried the Wicked Stix yet? What is your verdict?
