The holidays are in full swing and I spent the year trying out different gadgets for the kitchen. As a cook and a new mom, I love gadgets that help make life easier preparing a meal and of course makes cooking a breeze.

Here are a few of my favourite gadgets for 2019 that you might want to consider getting your loved ones. Do note there are no affiliate links, but some of these items were gifted to us throughout the year to give it a test.

Here are 10 of our favourite items.

Instant Pot

Instant Pot is a slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, pressure cooker, egg cooker, sautees, steams, and so many other things. No wonder, this is one of the hottest appliances out there. It can do it all. Of course, the most popular function is the pressure cooker as it can create meals very quickly. Great for a busy family.

Nespresso Vertuo

I’ve been skeptical about Nespresso machines until I got one. I would go out for coffee often just to get a nice strong latte, but then I realized I could just do it at home and the quality was pretty good and there are so many options for the capsules. I especially love making iced lattes in the Summer.

HUROM Citrus Juicer

If you love making juice, it’s easier than ever with the HUROM Citrus Juicer. It’s able to squeeze as much out of the fruits as possible. Much better than with hand. It’s perfect for not just juice, but cocktails, mocktails, or anything else that needs juice and pulp.

Zojirushi Rice Cooker & Warmer

When it comes to rice, we are really serious about how our rice is cooked. Whether it is white, brown, or mixed rice, it must be very fluffy. I have had my Zojirushi Rice Cooker for 2 years now and I would not use anything else. I’ve tried cooking rice with the Instant Pot but it really didn’t cut it.

As we aren’t a large family, we opted with the 3-cup version for just our family of 3. There are setting for white/mixed riced, sushi rice, brown rice, GABA brown rice, long grain white rice, steel cut oatmeal and quick cooking. It does take a little while longer to cook brown rice, but it tastes amazing.

SodaStream

I’ve grown to really love sparking water and I just hate how many bottles accumulates and it is very wasteful. When I got my SodaStream many years ago, I always had sparkling water at my fingertips. Over the years, the machines got better and better, thus meaning more gas. I love my sparkling water really fizzy. You can use it in cocktails, mocktails, and whatever else that needs sparkling water.

T-Fal Acti-Cook & Stir

Another great kitchen helper for whipping up a meal is the T-Fal Acti-Cook and Stir. It can create a plethora of different meals without monitoring, stirring, and just one appliance to get it done. If you need an extra hand in the kitchen, their intelligent stirring paddle will help. Imagine stir fry, curries, pudding, soup, and much more. There is also 18 different preset cooking programs to cook many things.

Vitamix Ascent A3500

The powerhouse of all high powered blender is the Vitamix. From smoothies, dessert, soup, dips & spreads, it does a great job turning simple ingredients into a smooth smooth puree or whatever you need pulverized.

We absolutely love it.

Zojirushi Micom Water Boiler and Warmer

Another Zojirushi appliance, but I have my water boiler on all the time. It make making a bottle of milk easy for the baby, and a pot of tea for myself. I grew up with these water boilers and it’s an Asian household essential.

Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp Digital Air Fry Toaster Oven

Having an oven at home is great, but we cook a lot of smaller batched dishes that don’t require the use of the full over. Hamilton Beach has their Sure-Crisp Air Fry Toaster Oven and we have been loving it over Thanksgiving. There are 6 different settings – Air Fry, Toast, Bake, Broil, Pizza & Rotisserie. It’s a pretty good size that it can fit 6 slices of bread and even a 12″ pizza. From air fried cauliflower to pizza pockets, it worked for us.

T-Fal’s Thermo-spot Frying Pans

I have been using my trusty T-Fal pans with the thermo-spot for about 5 years now. I love how it takes the guess work out of figuring out when the pan is hot enough to start cooking. The spot turns solid red and it’s ready to get cooking. They are also very durable and non-stick.

I love how when you can get the pan hot, it gives steak a nice sear. Also, I love it for making dumplings too.

Final Thoughts

Well, there it is, 10 of my favourite appliances in our house. Each one has a purpose and has made our life easier in the kitchen. Of course, having all 10 would be overkill, but pick and choose the items that works in your space.

What is your favourite small appliance in the kitchen?

ZenPop Japan is a Japanese Subscription Box Service from Osaka, Japan. They have 4 different types of subscription boxes:

  • Ramen – 7 bowls of authentic Japanese noodles
  • Sweets – 15 different kinds of weird and wonderful Japanese sweets
  • Ramen + Sweets Mix – 2 bowls of noodles and 6 – 7 sweet and savoury snacks
  • Stationery – 10 kawaii and high-quality stationery products from Japan’s top brands

When ZenPop Japan approached me to review their subscription box service, I knew I wanted to check out their box dedicated to ramen. I am all about the ramen life.

Pricing

The plan starts at $27 USD with free international shipping. It’s pretty good that shipping is included as other subscription box services charge for that extra. With 7 ramen inside the pack, it is just under $4 USD per noodle.

It is more expensive than what you would find in a grocery store, but depending on where you live, Japanese ramen noodles may be hard to find. Plus, it’s exciting to try something new that you wouldn’t normally pick up.

Ramen Pack

The box I got was for October 2019 and the theme was Southern Japan. There were 3 varieties of Tonkotsu, which is from Fukuoka. Then 2 bows of Chanpon, a regional dish of Nagasaki, and then one from Osaka.

CupStar Tonkotsu Ramen

From the packaging, I wasn’t expecting much but this was one of my favourites. It has onion, garlic and ginger with the rich pork bone broth. It has a depth of flavour which I really enjoyed. There is also diced pork bits, roasted sesame seeds, scallions, and wood ear mushroom for added flavour and texture. I would definitely get this again if I saw it in a store.

Maru-uma Tonkotsu Ramen

This was surprisingly good. You get the aroma of the pork bone and veggie extracts when it’s cooking. The toppings – wood ear mushroom, sesame seeds, scallions, and red pickled ginger was very enjoyable.

Hyoubanya Koku Tonkotsu

The broth is light flavoured compared to the other ones in this package. It is topped with chashu bits and scallions. You can even make a boiled egg and add it into the bowl.

It was a decent ramen, but not my favourites as I personally prefer richer broths.

Men Dining Chanpon

This is a Chinese inspired noodle dish from Nagasaki prefecture in Kyushu. The noodles are smooth and in the rich soup with white and black pepper. There are also bits of cabbage, kamaboko, and wood ear mushroom. It was decent, but hard for an instant noodle to recreate the felling of this dish.

Seimen Yasai Chanpon

The noodles have a different texture that is soft and chewy. Just make sure not to overcook this instant noodle. The broth has pork, chicken and seafood so it’s unique. You’ll also find toppings like cabbage, onions, scallions, snap peas, carrots, squid, kamaboko, and wood ear mushrooms. To enhance the taste, they suggest adding a few drops of spicy sesame oil if you have any.

Sugo Negi Miso Ramen

This is the most popular ramen from the Sugomen collections. They have a special process of making the noodles and it’s not fried like other ramen noodles on the market. The noodles has a nice texture but the broth wasn’t my favourite as I generally tend to not love miso based ramen broths. Just a personal preference as I find it too salty.

Okonomiyaki Sauce Yakisoba

This was fun to try out as it was different than all the ramen in the pack. Very fancy packaging and way to prepare this. It’s a dry noodle, so you need to pour out the water after the noodles cook. Then all the sauce and toppings go into it.

It definitely had the aroma of okonomiyaki with the ginger and cabbage pieces.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was an adventure going through all the noodles. 7 ramen was perfect for the month. The subscription boxes aren’t for everyone, but its great for those who are instant noodle fanatics who don’t have a good amount of selection in their local grocery store.

Where I live, I have tons of ramen options, but they don’t carry all the instant ramen from Japan. ZenPop was a great way to discover some new styles and brands. Instructions were easy to follow and made for a quick meal.

Now, I’m ready for my Japan trip, which is just a few days away.

Blended For You delivers blended, frozen, and ready-to-use smoothies across the Lower Mainland. As a mom, there are days where I barely have time to eat since all the attention is on Baby E. The freezer is my best friend because I can easily heat something up or whip something up.

When my friend connected me with Blended For You, they told me they had a ‘New Parents Sanity Pack’ of smoothies. I was intrigued.

Delivery

As they are based in Vancouver, they currently only to the Lower Mainland.

Vancouver- North Vancouver- West Vancouver- Lions Bay- Squamish- Whistler- Burnaby- Richmond- Surrey- White Rock- Delta- Maple Ridge- Coquitlam- Port Coquitlam- Port Moody

It arrives at the door and if you don’t want them to knock or ring the door bell, you can put in that request too. It was great for us because baby was sleeping when the delivery arrived.

New Parents Sanity Pack

The pack of smoothies comes with 8 different smoothies which give parents some nutrients back in their diet. When baby cries, you’ll do what you can to calm them down. I had days where I didn’t have time to cook, so the thought of turning on the stove was very difficult. I was really excited to give this sanity pack a try just to eat something that wasn’t take out. Especially when baby is sick and you’re sick, anything easy is helpful.

The 8 smoothies in the New Parents Sanity Pack were:

  • Maca Energy
  • Maca Java
  • Green Beginnings
  • Be Green
  • Inside & Out Acai
  • The Athlete
  • Nutty Banana
  • Greens Daily Dose

Ways to enjoy it

They suggest 3 different ways to enjoy Blended For You smoothies.

  • Blending it
  • Shaking it
  • Spooning it

Of course with having a baby, you know, turning on the blender is a no-go. Shaking up the thawed packet and mixing it with your liquid of choice was pretty good. If you have a shaker up, you can use that. But, if you don’t, any container with a lid works too.

The Green, Green Beginnings, Inside & Out Acai, and Green Daily Dose were my favourite mixed with a bit of Oat Milk.

My favourite method was actually spooning it right out of the pouch. It was extremely delicious if the ingredients contained banana and or almond. butter. Nutty Banana, Maca Energy, Maca Java, and The Athlete.

Giving Back

I also love how they give back to the community.  They have a fundraising initiative for November and December where 15% of all gift pack purchases got to BC Women’s Foundation.

Final Thoughts

I’ve tried a lot of smoothie delivery companies but I do really enjoy Blended For You as there are many ways to enjoy the smoothies and they have combo packs suited for different occasions like getting well, good food gratitude, celebrations, student care, and new parents.

Coca-Cola has release their coffee flavoured version of the classic cola. This cola coffee hybrid has been spotted at multiple Asian grocery stores in Vancouver.

I got mine at T&T Supermarket and this is the Taiwan version that was imported into Canada as it’s not available in North America just yet. They do stay there is less sugar and more caffeine in this Coffee Plus.

Taste Test

You get the taste of Coca-Cola first and then you get the aftertaste of sweet coffee candy. It was very interesting and it took me a while to decided what I thought. Even with the less sugar in it, it seemed very sweet to me. I am a coffee drinker but of course this doesn’t hit the mark personally.

I didn’t like that after the coffee taste fades, I just had a mouth full of caramel sweetness. I personally prefer the classic Coca-Cola.

Final Thoughts

I would pass on this if I encounter it again. My husband was neutral to it and didn’t think it was too sweet. I did read a few articles that it might come to North America by end of 2019, but haven’t heard any official news just yet.

HUROM just released their brand new Citrus Juicer. Ever since I was a kid, juicing oranges were a chore but it did give your arm a good workout. Much has changed since then, so electric Citrus Juicers have made juicing your favourite citrus fruit a lot faster and easier.

The HUROM Citrus Juicer has a beautiful design where you can keep it up on the counter or store away in your cupboard. You can juice all your citrus fruits and yield the maximum amount of juice leaving the rind empty. Fruit isn’t cheap these days, so getting the most out of it is important.

Automatic Squeezing

When the citrus juicer handle is pressed down, the motor will work to automatically mimic the motion of hand-squeezing a fruit. We were really surprised it worked so effortlessly and efficient.

If you really love freshly squeeze juice in the morning, you can now do it.

Drip-stop Juice Outlet

You can open and close the juice outlet to control the amount of juice you’re pouring into the glass. This is to avoid any drippage just incase you cup is too big or small.

I personally like it to drip into a larger jar or pyrex cup to easily distribute the juice later on.

Quiet Motor

Unlike a blender, the motor is quiet. If you’re whipping up a special breakfast and need to make some juice, you won’t wake anyone up.

Safety

All HUROM juicers are UL-certified for customer safety and come without any blades or sharp parts, making it safe for the entire family. This is especially important if your kids are helping you juice too.

Citrus Juice Medley

My husband loves grapefruit and tangerine juice from the grocery store, but there is definitely something extra special about freshly made juice. I was at the grocery store and saw that navel oranges, grapefruits, limes and lemons were in season. I decided to incorporate these 4 citrus fruits into an exceptional beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Navel Oranges (or any type of orange that is in season)
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1/2 Lime

Directions:

  1. Cut all citrus fruits in half.
  2. Trim the stem/top of fruit for easier extraction.
  3. Put a jar in front of the juice outlet.
  4. Put the citrus halves in the squeezer cone.
  5. Press the handle to extract juices.
  6. Repeat until all citrus fruits are squeezed.
  7. Drink and enjoy.

Sparkling Citrus Mimosa

The classic brunch accompaniment is a mimosa made with orange juice and champagne. Why not add more citrus to it?

Ingredients:

  • 3 Navel Oranges (or any type of orange that is in season)
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 2 mini bottles of Champagne (200ml bottles)

Directions:

  1. Cut all citrus fruits in half.
  2. Trim the stem/top of fruit for easier extraction.
  3. Put a jug in front of the juice outlet.
  4. Put the citrus halves in the squeezer cone.
  5. Press the handle to extract juices.
  6. Repeat until all citrus fruits are squeezed.
  7. In a glass, pour in champagne, then the citrus juice.
  8. Drink and enjoy.

Cleaning Up

To clean the Citrus Juicer, all you need to do is disassemble the part that touch the fruits and juice. Just 4 parts which you can wash in running water and soap. You definitely do not want to put it in the dish washer. Hand washing is best.

You can then wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was very effective in juicing all the citrus fruits easily. It was able to squeeze as much out of the fruits as possible. Much better than with hand.

We did find that the citrus juicer was a bit tall, so storing in or under cabinets might be difficult depending on the height. There is no lock feature to bring the handle down when in storage.

If you are a huge citrus fan and like a bit of pulp in your juice, definitely check out the HUROM Citrus Juicer.

Clearly Kombucha is now available in Western Canada. Clearly Kombucha was founded in San Francisco offering customers a kombucha that has a crisp taste, isn’t vinegary, and no sediments. Last year, Molson Canadian acquired Clearly Kombucha, they are working hard to expand into new markets.

Where can they be found?

Their Black Currant & Raspberry Ginger flavours can be found at all 37 Costco West locations (Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba).

How much is it?

A six-pack with 3 Black Currant bottles and 3 Raspberry Ginger flavours was found in BC for $13.89 with a $4 discount. Of course the prices will vary and this is only accurate when this article was written.

Black Currant Clearly Kombucha

The Black Currant Clearly Kombucha is subtly sweet with mild carbonation. Very refreshing with berry notes. It doesn’t have the vinegar taste as they have advertised, but there is a sour tang from the fermentation. This was a really good flavour.

Raspberry Ginger Clearly Kombucha

The Raspberry Ginger Clearly Kombucha was effervescent and had a dominant raspberry taste with the ginger coming through as well. It is well balanced so the ginger isn’t too strong or overpowering.

Final Thoughts

There are definitely a lot of different kombucha on the market as it is really clear unlike a few others where there are floaties and other sediments in them. At 30 calories a bottle, this isn’t bad at all and is a nice treat.

If you are a fan of Kombucha, check out Clearly Kombucha.

Nespresso has brought back the Pumpkin Spice Cake coffee exclusively for the VERTUO system for a very limited time only. They launch limited time only flavours of capsules seasonally, so I was actually curious what they would craft up for the Fall. Similarly with other companies, pumpkin spice is on the top of that list.

Pumpkin Spice Cake

The capsules are a 5 on the intensity scale and makes a 230ml cup of coffee. It has cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and sweet pumpkin flavours blended with Arabicas from Ethiopia and Brazil to give you a taste of Fall.

When it brews in the machine, you really get the aroma of pumpkin spice and sets the tone of the season. You just want to curl up on the couch and sip away at the cup of coffee.

Add a Bit of Milk

When you add a bit of milk, the pumpkin notes are softened for a sweeter and smoother coffee. I actually prefer this way as it tones down the acidity.

To further enhance the taste, you can add your favourite syrup too. They suggest adding chestnut syrup if you are a fan of the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL). I just added a hint of simple syrup to mine. Whichever way you decide to do it, there are great combinations to be made.

Below is their recipe for Nespresso’s White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Cake Latte:

White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Cake Latte

Ingredients

  • 1 capsule Pumpkin Spice Cake
  • 2 tbs. white chocolate sauce
  • 2-3 oz. milk
  • Caramel sauce, optional

Directions

1) Pour white chocolate sauce into bottom of mug
2) Froth milk. Add frothed milk and foam to glass
3) Brew capsule directly into mug
4) Drizzle with caramel sauce, or more white chocolate sauce

Final Thoughts

You have to enjoy Pumpkin Spice to like this variation of coffee. You either love it or hate it. The coffee does have the pumpkin spice notes which are quite incredible.

I’m definitely ready for the Fall. Are you?

Sweet treats made with Ruby Cocoa Beans have been very trendy in the last year. Purdys, a Vancouver-based Chocolatier known for their delicious confections. My go-to items are always their hedgehog chocolates and original ice cream bars.

The latest items to come out of the Vancouver Factory Kitchen, is their ruby confections – Ruby Cherry Almond Bar and Ruby Praline. It is slated to be launched Canada-wide on September 13, 2019 known as International Chocolate Day, with samples in-stores as well. These are crafted from 100% sustainable ruby cocoa and will be available in all of Purdys’ 84 retail shops and online.

Did you know, every creation at Purdys uses 100% sustainable cocoa, ensuring their cocoa farmer partners and co-ops are supported by programs that improve their profits and the livelihoods of their families and communities. I love supporting companies like these to ensure their values to part of every process.

Ruby chocolate has a very unique taste. It tastes fruity and creamy, which is very different from traditional milk or dark chocolate. As a bonus, it is pink in colour as well from the result of the selection and crafting of ruby cocoa beans that undergo a shortened fermentation process. Thus meaning, ruby chocolate has no colours or fruit flavourings

Ruby Cherry Almond Bar

This Ruby Cherry Almond Bar has tart cherry and roasted almonds that enhances ruby’s natural flavour and adds texture to balance the sweetness.

We enjoyed the Ruby Cherry Almond Bar as there is great texture and the sweetness of ruby isn’t overpowering. This was our favourite of the two new Ruby creations.

Ruby Praline

Ruby Praline melds the sweet and salty taste combination. Purdys has taken their famous almond purée, combined it with berries and wrapped it in a ruby shell. The taste results in a creamy fusion of salty praline, bright fruit and the sweet natural taste of ruby.

There is a good amount of almond purée on the inside, but we just didn’t like the texture as much.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it is a nice addition to the Purdys line up of chocolates in-stores and online. The distinct taste of ruby does stand out. The Ruby Cherry Almond Bar and Ruby Praline are quite different, so if you like more texture then the Ruby Cherry Almond Bar is for you. If you like a smooth texture, Ruby Praline is for you.

Beer is definitely my go to beverage as I find it very light and refreshing to have over a meal with friends. With the explosion of breweries in Vancouver over the last few years, it never really occurred to me where the process of beer starts out. Every beer tour I’ve been to, they show the process of brewing, fermenting, and packaging. All of them skip out the most important step of where it truly begins – the farm.

When Molson Canadian invited us to Sartori Farms, I was excited to see the hops up close as I’ve only seen pictures. Also, I was mind blown to hear there are a good amount of farms in BC producing hops.

Sartori Farms isn’t open to the public, so this is an exclusive look at their hop production.

Here are a few amazing things we learned during our trip to Sartori Farms.

Fraser Valley, the Optimal Growing Region for Hops

Along the 49th Parallel is an ideal latitude for growing hops that meets the unique requirements that contributes to Molson Canadian’s signature taste. The climate is also ideal as we have dry warm summers that create the perfect environment to grow hops.

Since 1880’s there have been hop farms in British Columbia. Varieties like Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Cashmere, Nugget, Magnum and Lumberjack are harvested and processed into beers that we know and love. Each variety has its unique aroma which gives beer its unique taste.

The yellow centre of the hops has all the oils and aromas that the farmers are looking for. It smelled just like beer with citrus notes. I was very surprised.

Sartori Farms is family-owned and operated and they have been growing hops for the last 13 years before the boom of the craft beer scene. Chris Sartori, has taken it upon himself to be dubbed the unofficial hops master. Going into the hop business, he saw opportunity as not many farmers were investing into this crop at the time. He is very particular about the hops he creates and ensure the highest quality that he can produce.

The hops are then processed, dried, and palletized where it will be passed on to Molson Canadian to create the lager.

Locally Grown and Produced Ingredients

For the Molson family, keeping locally grown and produced ingredients are key to Molson beers even since they were founded in 1786. Molson Canadian is made with ingredients that reflect Canada like Prairie barley, Canadian water, and recently hops from Chilliwack.

They helped build the barley industry in the prairies since 1786 and spent decades working with local hop farmers.

Elevate Your Dining Experience with Food and Beer Pairings

Food and beer go hand in hand. Molson Canadian is a really clean and crisp lager that surprisingly pairs well with fresh local ingredients. During our long table luncheon, we had:

  • Cheddar + Beer Soup
  • Chilliwack Roast Corn Salad with pimento pepper chipotle
  • BC Wild Salmon Medallions with shallot tarragon, gluten-free crust and wasabi dip
  • Braised Beef Short Rib with parsnip puree and local veggies
  • Blueberry Shortcake with crème pâtisserie

The light sweet aroma is so smooth in the lager that the pairing with Molson Canadian brings out the natural sweetness in the dishes. With heavier dishes like the braised beef, it helps lighten the flavour to give it a better balance.

Instead of pairing your beer with the usual burger fried chicken and pizza, it’s so versatile to have it with a wide variety of dishes to enhance the flavour, aroma and texture.

Final Thoughts

Molson Canadian has always been a very easy lager to drink – clean, clear and crisp. They choose the best ingredients that reflect Canada like the use of Prairie barley, Canadian water, and hops from Chilliwack.

Molson will be opening their newest brewery in Chilliwack on September 17, 2019, where it will be added to their list of Canadian breweries in St. John’s, Moncton, Montreal, and Toronto.

HUROM is well known for producing one of the best slow juicers in the market and we absolutely adore ours when when got it a while time ago. It was when cold press juices were huge a few years back and it made more sense making it at home. I don’t use it as much as I use my blender, so when HUROM announced the launch of their Hexa Power High Speed Blender, I was pretty excited.

There are a lot of blenders of the market with a multitude of functions, but they hone in on making the blender easy to use for the consumer and also making sure the power is there to tackle the most chunky items.

Power

It features a powerful 1,600 W motor that blends up to speeds of 30,000 RPM, so any ice chunks will be fully integrated into your smoothie.

Easy Controls

There are easy one-touch auto pre-programmed controls – smoothie, ice crush, and soup. You can also use the manual dial to control the speed of the blender. It ranges from 16,000 to 30,000 RPM and can blend just about anything. The slower it is the quieter it is.

Hexa Blades

The blender is named after their Hexa-Blending Technology, the 6 blades inside the blender features a hexa-blend formation that create a mini-tornado within 2L container.

Safety Features

There are 2 safety features that I appreciate just in case anything happens. The power will shut off when the blender reaches its heat limit as to prevent the motor from overheating. Also, if the 2L container is lifted off the base while in use, the blender will stop right away.

As a new mom, safety features are really important for me to keep my family safe.

Here are 2 of my favourite items that I have used the Hexa Power High Speed Blender to make.

Mighty Green Smoothie

This is one of my favourite smoothies as it incorporates a lot of kale and spinach into the diet and its balanced out by the mango and pineapple to give it sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • 2 handfuls of Kale
  • 3 handfuls of Spinach
  • 1/2 cups of frozen mango
  • 1/2 cups of frozen pineapple
  • 1.5 cups of water
  • 1/2 lemon juice
  • 1 TBS Chia seeds
  • 1 TBS Hemp Hearts

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients in blender.
  2. Press ‘Smoothie’ preset until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Pour into cut and add sprinkled chia seed and hemp heart on top for extra garnish.
  4. Drink and enjoy.

Berry Red Smoothie Bowl

Instead of drinking your smoothie, you can eat it in a bowl with other ingredients in the morning.

Ingredients for Smoothie Base

  • 1.5 cups cranberry juice
  • 1/2 cups ice
  • 1/4 cup frozen strawberry
  • 1/4 cup frozen raspberry
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberry

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients in blender to make the smoothie base
  2. Press ‘Smoothie’ preset until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Divide smoothie into bowls.
  4. Top with granola, trail mix, chia seeds, hemp heart or other toppings.
  5. Eat and enjoy.

Cleaning Up

Like most blenders on the market, self-cleaning is quite easy. You don’t need to put it in the dish washer. They make rinsing fast. Just hold down the “pulse” switch to rinse in 20 seconds.

Final Thoughts

Hexa Power High Speed Blender is pretty good and it’s great for smoothies, crushing ice, making soups, and other items that need blending.

As for the price point, it’s pretty standard for a high powered blender for the HUROM brand. It is also built pretty well and cased in a stainless steel shell with the 2L container made of BPA-Free Tritan, which make it lightweight and durable.

SunRype has launched their new line of sparkling teas in stores across Western Canada. I was in my local grocery store and didn’t realize they started selling these sparkling teas. I thought they only did juices and snacks. Apparently, they launched these back in 2017.

There are 4 flavours of sparkling teas in 355ml cans:

  • Black Tea with a Twist of Lemon
  • Green Tea with Honey Lemon
  • Black Tea with Mango and Peach
  • Rooibos Tea with Raspberry

All 4 made with real brewed tea, natural flavours, real cane sugar, and is carbonated.

Green Tea with Honey Lemon

Upon first taste, the honey and lemon definitely stand out and the green tea lingers in the background. This reminded me of Arizona Iced Tea but with carbonation. It was ok, but it was still more sweet and fruity instead of a bold green tea finish.

Black Tea with a Twist of Lemon

This is essentially lemon tea with a sweet black tea finish. As the black tea is strong than green tea, you can taste it more in the drink. This as our favourite of the four flavours.

Black Tea with Mango and Peach

The black tea is paired with the sweetness of mango and peach. The mango and peach were strong and definitely sweet. The black tea is masked and has a tangy aftertaste from the fruit.

Rooibos Tea with Raspberry

This was our least favourite as the beverage reminded us of hawthorn candies in Asia. I was never really a fan of rooibos teas. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, so if you’re afraid of the caffeine content, this might be an option for you.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the drinks aren’t bad but I personally prefer stronger tea flavour. The introduction of sparkling teas are good and is refreshing in the Summer. My favourite flavour is the Black Tea with a Twist of Lemon. If they made this in a larger bottle, I’d consider getting this.

I’ve been a SodaStream customer for a long time now and recently they launched their My Only Bottle – a smaller, 500mL version of their classic sparkling water bottle. I absolutely love this since I am one of the only people in my family that can chug sparkling water all day long. Especially when I was pregnant, I couldn’t have sugar because of gestational diabetes, so my go to drink was always sparkling water.

With the traditional 1 litre bottles, I can realistically only finish half of it at a time. Of course, I can save it for later.

The new My Only Bottle is perfect for those on the go who love sparkling water. Whether you are a student, mother, or whoever, you can now fizz up your water and bring it along with you. It’s a really good size too.

My Only Bottle is available in two models: Loop and Sport (featuring a convenient drinking spout). The one pictured in this article is the Loop.

The bottles are dishwasher-safe and UV-resistant build, so you can easily clean and store their bottle without hassle. Just throw it in the dishwasher with the rest of the dishes and cups.

You can find these at places where SodaStream products are sold. Plus it retails for about $15.99. I’ve been using My Only Bottle for a few weeks now and I love it. Did you know, owning just one reusable Sodastream bottle can reduce up to 2,000 plastic bottles each year?

We are huge fans of First We Feast’s Hot Ones videos on Youtube and there is something about watching people hurt themselves eating spice wings while being interviewed. Their first episode aired in March 2015 and after 9 seasons, they are still going strong and introducing amazing hot sauce varieties in the market.

Recently, Hot Ones and 88rising, a popular hip-hop collective have joined forces to create a limited edition hot sauce called ‘Dragon in the Clouds’. The sauce was teased in Season 2 of Feast Mansion. They use flavours of Sichuan peppercorn, sambal, ghost peppers, vinegar, yuzu, mustard, and fresh garlic to induce an intense heat experience. They do claim this is one of the hottest hot sauces they have ever created.

When we saw the sauce drop, the 4oz bottle originally sold the bottles for $30 each, but then suddenly dropped to $25 on 88nightmarket.com. We initially thought this was a bit strange, but we got refunded the difference right away. Shipping to Canada is possible but it is a bit expensive, so we opted to ship it to our mailbox in the US and make a trip out of it.

When it arrived, it comes in a small black cardboard box with the 4oz. ‘Dragon in the Clouds’ inside. The design is beautiful.

We went to Popeyes and tried this on their Mac n Cheese and fried chicken to taste test the ‘Dragon in the Clouds’ hot sauce. It’s a very hot sauce, so a dab is good enough! We poured a bunch in our Mac n Cheese and it was instant regret.

At first, the mix of aromatics can be tasted with the yuzu and vinegar standing out. Then, the heat from the sambal, ghost pepper, and Szechuan peppercorn hits you. It got hot real fast!! We’ve tried the Last Dab and the Dragon in the Clouds felt much hotter. In terms of scoville heat units, they don’t mention what the numbers are, so it’s hard to say if the Last Dab or Dragon in the Clouds is hotter definitively.

The 4oz bottle will last us for a while unlike the other Hot Ones sauces in our collection.

Miss Vickie’s has gone gourmet and launched Miss Vickies Signatures in 3 flavours – Apple Cider Vinaigrette & Shallots, Hickory Smoked Salt, and Citrus & Black Peppercorn.

“This new collection of Miss Vickie’s Signatures potato chips delivers a unique sensorial taste experience with modern ingredients”, according to their website.

This new look for these line of chips were very intriguing, so we had to grab each flavour to taste test. We’ve been huge fans of Miss Vickie’s original line because of the texture of the kettle cooked chips. I remember it was one of my go-to chip brands whenever I would go to the vending machine by our school cafeteria.

When I brought these home, my husband was also so curious about the flavour combinations and was surprised how the packaging is dark and moody unlike their colourful packaging.

Citrus & Black Peppercorn

I wouldn’t have thought these 2 ingredients go together. You can the fresh citrus as the first aroma, then the layers of the peppercorn. What really stood out was the classic texture of Miss Vickie’s kettle cooked chips that have a beautiful crunch that’s music to your ears.

My husband felt like it tasted like hand soap that has a citrus scent.

Hickory Smoked Salt

You get a strong aroma of the hickory smoke. Imagine hickory sticks, but in a full chip format but much smokier. All you can smell is the hickory.

Yet again, the texture was great.

Apple Cider Vinaigrette & Shallots

This was the third flavour in the collection. The apple cider vinaigrette stood out as the dominant taste. For me, it was a bit strong and the shallots didn’t shine at all.

I personally don’t like apple cider vinegar, so this flavour wasn’t for me.

Final Thoughts

Overall, you can’t go wrong with the classic texture of Miss Vickie’s chips. The flavours are unique but I still like the other Miss Vickie’s flavours more.

As Miss Vickie’s Signatures Chips are only available for a limited time only, who knows how long these will be on store shelves.

TWG Tea Salon & Boutique in Vancouver Moon Route Tea Mooncake Collection for the mid-Autumn festival, a harvest festival celebrated by the Chinese. It is usually celebrated eating mooncakes and having dinner with loved ones.

This year, TWG has several traditional mooncakes as well as snowskin mooncakes, which as infused with the luxurious TWG Teas.

You can find theses at TWG Tea Salon & Boutique in Vancouver from August 9 till September 13, 2019.

We were invited for a sneak peek of the Moon Route Tea Mooncake Collection.

Moon Route Tea

This tea pairs well with all the tea-infused traditional and snowskin mooncakes in the collection. This is a subtle and creamy blend of green tea and red fruits. It is accented by a sweet note of rare citrus which lingers on the palate.

Traditional Mooncakes

The traditional mooncakes are contemporary while maintaining the integrity of what a baked mooncake should be. These are more dense and sweeter than the snowskin mooncakes.

There are 4 types to this collection – Constellation, Jewel, Harvest, and Moonlight.

Constellation

This has a golden crust, a smooth and elegant brown lotus filling infused with Singapore Breakfast Tea. There is roasted melon seeds and an embedded salted egg yolk inside the filling. This was definitely the most classic out of the four types.

Jewel

This mooncakes has their Chocolate Tea infused in the brown lotus paste and sprinkled with chocolate chips and crumble. Then, it is wrapped in a baked chocolate crust.

Of the four traditional mooncakes, Jewel was our favourite. It was sweet and delicious. We loved how it has melted pieces of chocolate throughout the mooncake.

Harvest

This unique mooncake has a black crust with Mistral Tea and lemongrass infused white lotus filling, and strawberry almond paste centre.

Moonlight

The last traditional mooncake has white lotus paste infused with Matcha, and a Amarena cherry centre.

Snowskin Mooncakes

Snowskin mooncakes are a modern approach that appeals to the younger demographic. It makes for an icy cold dessert at the end of a meal.

There are also 4 types to this set – Pure, Blossom, Illumination, and Serenity.

Pure

This one has a white snowskin covering white lotus paste infused with Moon Route Tea and a lotus cream centre.

Blossom

This bright orange snowskin mooncake has Geisha Blossom Tea infused white lotus filling and a peach confit in a white chocolate centre.

We really enjoyed this one.

Illumination

This black mooncake has a brown lotus paste infused with Earl Grey Fortune and an orange lotus cream centre. We really enjoyed this too.

Serenity

This yellow snowskin mooncake has Lemon Bush Tea infused brown lotus filling and a centre of tangy lemon lotus cream.

Final Thoughts

The Moon Route Tea Mooncake Collection for Mid-Autumn Festival sets are perfect to give to family and friends to celebrate this great occasion. If you’re looking for something unique, this is it.

Of the eight mooncakes, we really enjoyed Jewel, Blossom, and Illumination.

M is back at it again with energy drink reviews, this time with the super popular G FUEL. G FUEL is probably the biggest gamer focused energy drink company that’s not sold in retail stores. G FUEL has a huge online presence getting the likes of the FAZE Clan and Pewdiepie to vouch for their products.

G FUEL is a caffeine, vitamins, antioxidants powder you mix with water to kickstart your morning or gaming session.

Just like I said in my Game Fuel review, it’s ironic such stereotypical gamer focused energy drinks are sugar free and only has as much caffeine as a large cup of coffee. Same goes goes for G FUEL, all of their flavours use no sugar, instead opting for Sucralose and their other big selling point is you can get a bunch more bang for your buck drinking powder rather than stocking up on individual cans. Without further ado, here are my reviews of the flavours I tried! I’ll start from my favourite flavours down.

Peach Iced Tea

I don’t consider myself a huge iced tea fan, but I don’t mind drinking iced tea once in awhile. G FUEL’s Peach Iced Tea surprised the heck out of me when it became my most favourite G FUEL flavour. The peach taste is incredibly refreshing with the right amount of sourness. I doubt there’s real tea in here, but they nailed the slight bitterness of tea in the undertones of this flavour. There is no hint of artificial sweetener in the taste!

Pink Grapefruit

Refreshingly tangy yet definitely more fruity than sour taste of grapefruit. It is way more sweet than it is sour, so if you’re looking for a sour G FUEL flavour, I would not recommend the Pink Grapefruit. My 2nd favourite flavour from G FUEL with no aftertaste or hint of artificial sweetener.

Strawberry Shortcake

Delicious fruity Strawberry flavour in the beginning with a hint of cream at the finish. Tastes good with water only or with milk. Surprisingly tastes better with water only. No artificial sweetener taste. The flavour hearkens back to Nesquik strawberry nostalgia. It actually got me clamouring for more strawberry in my other snacks for awhile.

Sour Blue Chug Rug

Surprising fruity sweet taste of blue raspberry that transitions to a sour but not unpleasantly sour note. The more you drink it the more the sour stands out. The first swig is the best part, then diminishes the more I drank it. It verges too close to a full taste of artificial sweetener. This is perfect for those that love Blue raspberry or sour candy.

Sour Cherry

Delicious plump fruity cherry taste to start then quickly turns to a pleasant sour note. There again, is no taste of artificial sweetener. It’s very difficult to nail cherry flavour without making it taste too much like cold medicine. This one is great as the cherry fruit flavour is not overcome by the sourness.

Tropical Rain

Refreshing taste of raspberry and blueberry in the beginning, with a slight transition to a super subdued pineapple and kiwi. Not sure if its because this is an older tub, but the end in mouth feels chalky. It’s hard to pinpoint the fruits but they are there. Unfortunately there is just a slight taste of artificial sweetener.

Cherry Limeade

This flavour really reminds me of cherry limeades growing up in the 90s. There is no artificial sweetener taste and the lime taste is strong. I think it’s perfect for those who love the cherry limeade flavour, but it didn’t really do much for me personally.

Cotton Candy

Definitely weird to drink a Cotton Candy beverage. They nailed the flavour and nuances of cotton candy without sugar, which is crazy. There is no hint of artificial sweetener yet the drink could feel chalky on the tongue. It reminded me of cotton candy bubble gum. If you love the flavour of cotton candy and wouldn’t mind drinking the flavour, this one’s for you!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was super impressed with every new flavour I tried of G FUEL. I always dread sucralose but G FUEL did a great job in hiding that taste. It brings a bit of comfort that they add antioxidants to an otherwise caffeine drink and I can’t wait to taste more G FUEL in the future, especially Battle Juice (Pineapple), Bahama Mama, and their latest collaboration with Bandai Namco, Type 0.

PYUR is a flavoured vodka soda brand that is taking a health conscious approach to the ready to drink beverage market which has zero carbs, zero sugar and zero preservatives with all natural flavours.

It’s a great beverage to have at any party as it’s very easy and clean to drink.

PYUR comes in a 6 pack and a mix pack of 12 355ml cans with 3 flavours – lime, raspberry, and peach. These packs can be found at liquor stores and select private liquor stores in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

We were sent a pack of PYUR Vodka Soda to try.

Taste Test

Of course, there are other vodka sodas in the market already – Nude and Nutrl that also have very similar look and flavours. Also from Vancouver, BC too.

Compared to the other brands, PYUR has 4.5% alcohol content, which is 0.5% less alcohol. We found this difference helps cut out the bitter aftertaste from the vodka. We also noticed because there is a bit less alcohol, this is 90 calories instead of 100 calories from other brands.

Of the 3 flavours, lime and peach were our favourites. Lime is such a classic flavour that you can’t go wrong with. Peach was refreshing and tasted good. Raspberry leaves a lot to be desired as the taste was very artificial and left a bad aftertaste in our mouths.

We would stick with lime and peach flavours. This was like drinking La Croix, or other flavoured sparkling water brands but adding some vodka into the mix. It was a good alternative if you want to sip on something easy but not having too much alcohol.

Lime
Raspberry
Peach

#PYURInspiration

PYUR stands for Power Your Unique Reality and their goal is to help people live their best lives and to create an inspiring community that spreads a positive message. With so much going on in the world, sometimes it’s just nice to hear great things that others are doing to make the world a better place.

They have created a challenge called #PYURInspiration and focuses on highlighting women in the community that motivate and are admired by others.

Since becoming a mom earlier this year, I have immense admiration for women everywhere. A shout out to my mom and mother-in-law for raising such great children and supporting the next generation. Spending a lot more family time during my maternity leave has brought us closer together and given me a few extra pair of hands to take care of Baby E. They go the extra mile and never say no to anything.

Without them, going through postpartum depression would have been a lot more difficult. I really had some good day, blah days, and bad days. Motherhood has been a challenge but I wouldn’t change a thing.

Final Thoughts

With the hot summer which is hitting Vancouver now, I definitely prefer a drink that isn’t sugary as it makes me thirstier. If you’re looking to try something new and haven’t tried vodka sodas before, definitely check it out.

Last week, I went to an event hosted by The Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium to learn about (and most importantly taste!) the “King of Cheese”. Parmigiano Reggiano is one of the top cheeses consumed in the world, across Europe, North America and Asia. It’s even the cheese of choice for both American and Russian astronauts in the International Space Station. So, if those two countries are able to agree on one thing, surely this cheese is worth knowing more about!

Parmigiano Reggiano is a PDO product, which stands for “Protected Designation of Origin,” which is monitored by the European Union. This is why the cheese has its own Consortium, which was created to protect the heritage of the cheese, maintain quality control, and educate about the cheese worldwide. We met the two lovely representatives from Parma who took us through a tasting and a delicious tasting menu at the Après Wine Bar on Queen West in downtown Toronto. So while we sipped the delicious natural wines, we also tasted and devoured the delicious and creative pairings of Parmigiano Reggiano all in the name of “education.”

Beef tartare tarts served with an aperitif.

Potato galettes topped with crab and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano

Fresh radishes dipped in Parmigiano Reggiano.

Check out the top five things I learned about Parmigiano Reggiano below!

Where Is Parmigiano Reggiano Produced?

This is the area of production for Parmigiano Reggiano in Italy.

In non-Italian, North American circles, I have experienced Parmesan and Parmigiano Reggiano being used interchangeably. However, this is as inaccurate as popping any old bottle of bubbly and calling it “champagne!” While champagne is the most famous type of sparkling wine it can only be labelled champagne if it was produced in the Champagne region of France. Similarly, only the cheese labeled “Parmigiano Reggiano” comes from the designated zone of production in Italy. This area includes Parma, Reggio-Emilia, Modena, Mantua, and Bologna. In Canada you can find parmesan cheese that is produced in other parts of Italy or North America (often in that powdery form *shudders*), and the taste is vastly different from Parmigiano Reggiano because it’s produced from different cow species and a different “terroir.” Apologies for all the wine comparisons, but it does make sense seeing as Parmigiano Reggiano pairs beautifully with wine.

How Is Parmigiano Reggiano Made?

Here is a shot from the Italian factories where the special milk that will become Parmigiano Reggiano

Parmigiano Reggiano is only made of three ingredients: milk, salt and rennet.  The milk is a blend that comes from four different cow species. The milk is raw and unpasteurized and is delivered to the cheese production sites within two hours of milking. The rennet is a natural enzyme that helps to coagulate the cheese. There are no additives or preservatives in Parmigiano Reggiano from end to end – this includes the cows’ feed which must be preservative free. Because of these strict standards throughout the production process, the bacteria flora naturally present in the milk is maintained, eventually leading to the distinctive, unique taste of Parmigiano Reggiano.

Secret Ingredient of Parmigiano Reggiano

Here is a shot of the three different cheeses that we tasted.

The Italian representatives say that there’s a fourth secret ingredient – it’s time! Parmigiano is aged for a minimum of 12 months, but it can be aged a lot longer. The standard Parmigiano Reggiano found on shelves is aged for 24 months. We tasted three different cheeses, 12 months, 24 months and 36 months. As you age the cheese it becomes more flavourful. At 12 months, the cheese is mild, milky and almost fruity in taste. It pairs well with white wines, and the cheese is a great addition to salad and other cold dishes. At 24 months, it becomes saltier in taste and grainier in texture. This is the most versatile type of Parmigiano Reggiano as it pairs well with medium-bodied red wines and can be used in all types of cooking. My favourite was the 36 months Parmigiano Reggiano. The taste is more savoury and complex, with a nutty taste and more salt crystals in the texture. The 36 months aged cheese is best enjoyed on its own or paired with fruit and honey after a meal.

More Than Just A Topping

Parmigiano Reggiano can be used for more than just a topping for pasta or an accompaniment on a charcuterie board. It can be shaved and then baked together in the oven to form a tasty crisp, as we had with the mushroom and truffle gnocchi. It can even be used as a finisher for desserts, when lightly shaved on top of something sweeter, as you can see from the dessert above. Think of how chocolate chip cookies are finished with a dusting of sea salt. The Parmigiano Reggiano adds a touch of salt, with more savoury depth than sea salt, that balances a sweet dish and keeps you coming back for more. In Japan, some chefs are using Parmigiano Reggiano to add more umami and flavouring to their food.

Lactose Intolerant?

Finally to all my lactose intolerant friends, stop hurting yourself and put down that mozzarella! Parmigiano Reggiano is lactose-free. The bacteria that ages the cheese eats all the sugar in the milk (lactose) within forty-eight hours, transforming the lactose to lactic acid. And according to the Consortium, 30 grams contains 50% of your daily calcium intake. Not a bad way to get those nutrients.

Did you know that 550L of milk are needed to produce one 40kg wheel of cheese?

How To Identify Genuine Parmigiano Reggiano?

Finally a few more tips from our friends at the Consortium. Here’s how to identify genuine Parmigiano Reggiano. First of all – look for Parmigiano Reggiano on the label and the embossed rind. It will “Parmigiano Reggiano” stamped on it, the date of production and a seal from the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium.

If you happen to have self-control and don’t eat your Parmigiano Reggiano in one sitting, then the cheese should be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the dairy section of your fridge to maintain the moisture. Don’t shave and freeze the cheese as it will lose moisture and consequently its texture and flavour.

Finally, don’t waste the rind, it should be used to flavour soups, pasta sauce and stews. Just fish it out before serving!

So what are you waiting for? Next time you’re making a cheese board, skip the basic brie (that’s right I said it) and buy a wedge of 36 months Parmigiano Reggiano instead. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
