Bells & Whistles is located near Fraser and Kingsway in Vancouver. They have a rotating tap of beers and a variety of food items to pair with them.

Of course, there is also something going on at Bells & Whistles. Right now, they have launched their Wünderbar Oktobeerfest pop-up until October 6, 2019. If you can’t be in Germany for the real thing, celebrate in style at Bells & Whistles.

Interior

There’s always a lot of different events hosted at Bells & Whistles. I love the centre of the room with the long tables and big screen. If you aren’t into mingling, there are other cozier tables if you want to be in the comfort of your friends.

At the rear of the restaurant, you can play some skee ball and shoot some hoops.

Menu

Seasonal Beers

I am loving all the beers on the menu. There is a good range of Oktoberfest beers from Germany to Vancouver. I tried the Persephone Oktoberfest and its a good beer from Gibsons, BC. Its a German Märzen that is an amber lager with hints of caramel, spices, and malt.

Warm Pretzels

The little round pretzels are more like buns and they are served with a tangy honey mustard dip. It came out super hot and steamy. Best eaten warm as it’s the best way to enjoy it. They honey mustard sauce was pretty good.

Currywurst – Vegan Edition

They have currywurst made with Beyond Bratwurst on top of curry ketchup fries. As a meat eater, this was very impressive. The curry ketchup really ties that taste together. All the meat eaters were so into this. They do have their regular bratwurst made with Two Rivers, which is also good.

Oktober Feast Platter

If you’re sharing a meal with friends and want a bunch of things to nibble on, the Oktober Feast may be a good option. It has pork schnitzel, Two Rivers Bratwurst, rosemary bacon, German Potato Salad, sauerkraut, mustard and pickles. Really good quality meats they use.

All items are easily sharable among 2-4 people. Not a full meal, but just nibbles.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Smoked Pork Shank with celeriac remoulade, green cabbage and hickory sticks are inside this. It is served in a milk bun with fries but you can always swap it with onion rings too.

This was my favourite of the 3 sandwiches. Lots of flavour from the pork and the other ingredients balance it out.

Eggplant Schnitzel Sandwiches

This has fried eggplant, braised sauerkraut, and a caper and mustard aioli. It is also served in a milk bun with fries but we got onion rings instead. The eggplant was pretty chunky and tough to eat. As the skin in pretty tough and the center of it more soft, the eggplant schnitzel would slide around. Even though it is called a schnitzel, it didn’t resemble it at all.

When you bite into the sandwich, you can only taste the eggplant as the aioli and saukraut doesn’t stand out at all.

Pork Schnitzel Sandwiches

This has fried pork cutlet, braised sauerkraut, rosemary bacon, and a caper and mustard aioli. It has all the same items as the eggplant schnitzel but with the pork instead of eggplant. I liked the crunch of the pork schnitzel. It’s not as large and extravagant as schnitzels you can find in Germany, but a decent portion in a handheld format.

Streusel Sundae

There is the base of the vanilla soft serve, streusel topping, and a caramel-apple compote. It’s always nice to end the meal with a sweet treat. It does melt quickly as it is soft serve. I enjoyed the crunch of the streusel and the sweetness that comes with the caramel-apple compote.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate Oktoberfest with friends, check out the Bells and Whistles Wünderbar Oktobeerfest pop-up. Some items are a hit and miss, but there are a few surprises like the Currywurst with Beyond Bratwurst option. The Oktober Feast Platter is a good item to share among the table too with high quality meats.

I’ve passed by Vancouver Alpen Club numerous times and I’ve always been curious about Deutsches Haus, which is located inside in the lower level.

We love German cuisine and have been to a few restaurant in Vancouver. Our friend is German and wanted to find some good authentic German cuisine, so I suggested we go to Deutsches Haus.

Interior

The interior is definitely dated and has an old smell to it as well. We did see many people make reservations for dinner time and it was busy by 7pm on a weekend. They have small to large tables and can fit a lot of people.

Menu

Krombacher Pils

You can get this in 300ml, 500ml, or a pitcher. We went with the 300ml and it was delicious!

Pretzel

This was fresh from the oven and it definitely was because it was piping hot. Good texture and size, but we wanted some more salt sprinkled on top.

Feast for Four

Since there were 4 of us, it made sense to get the platter for 4 so we can try a bit of everything and get a feel for this restaurant.

This comes with 1 full size oven roasted pork hock, 4 schnitzel, 4 Bavarian meatloaf, and assorted sausages. It is then served with spatzle, red cabbage and sauerkraut.

When it arrived at the table, it was definitely enough for 4…perhaps even 5 people.

The roasted pork hock was crisp on the exterior and so tender and flavourful on the inside. This was my favourite item on the platter.

It is also very oily, so it’s hard to eat a lot of it.

The schnitzel was quite a good portion size too, delicious as well when paired with the mushroom gravy.

It was my first time having Bavarian meatloaf and it was like a soft spongey spam. It definitely took more getting used to.

The sausages were good too but I wished there were more of it. The red cabbage and sauerkraut was very authentic according to our German friend.

The spätzle is an egg noodle dumpling an it accompanied the platter well. Pour some of the mushroom gravy or the other sauce and it’s great.

Black Forest Cake

I’ve had Black Forest Cake a lot when I was a kid, so I have been avoiding it for a very long time. Their Black Forest Cake has layers of chocolate cake, cream, and cherries. We liked the fact that they didn’t use the canned Maraschino Cherries.

Apple Strudel

This came piping hot our from the oven and served with whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Final Thoughts

Overall, pretty good German food from Deutsches Haus. The schnitzel and the roasted pork hock were my favourite items on the menu. It was good to try the platter to taste as much as we could since it was our first visit.

Next time, I would come back for a plate of Schnitzel.

labrasserie-brunch-1-2

Located in the heart of the West End, La Brasserie is a relaxed 35-seat restaurant that serves authentic Franco-German cuisine.

La Brasserie was one of my favourite brunch places and I was super sad that it closed down temporarily years ago.

labrasserie-brunch-2-2

William Wang purchased La Brasserie in January of 2015. Driven by his love for the restaurant and news that it was meant to close its doors indefinitely, Wang took over this small West End gem with hopes of renewing the quality and consistency it had previously been known for.

labrasserie-brunch-3-2

La Brasserie offers dinner daily and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The menu still has the same favourites and even the chef is the same.

labrasserie-brunch-2

Using high quality, locally sourced ingredients, all of the dishes served at La Brasserie are made to order. I love sitting by the bar since thats where all the action happens in the kitchen.

labrasserie-brunch-1

A good brunch starts with brewed coffee, sugar and milk. Free refills, so I always have at least 2 cups.

labrasserie-brunch-3

As I sipped on my coffee and chatted with CanucksGirl, we watched our brunch being put together. I always admire all the hard work that goes into the meal.

labrasserie-brunch-4

Chicken Mornay Crepes has pulled rotisserie chicken, mushroom, Mornay sauce, gruyére, and topped with salad. It’s a very rich and satisfying dish since I love cheese.

labrasserie-brunch-6

Suckling Pig and Eggs has confit potato, seasonal vegetables, poached eggs, and hollandaise. Another great dish and the suckling pig is very flavourful. Eggs poached perfectly.

labrasserie-brunch-4-2

Brasserie Burger has ground hanger steak, white cheddar, bacon, crispy onion, truffled aioli, and frites. It’s a classic item to order here and people always marvel at the amount of crispy onions they can stack on top. Also ask them for their house-made ketchup. The burger was so big that I had a hard time eating it, but tasted really good.

labrasserie-brunch-5-2

For those who are gluten-free or have dietary restrictions, they can make some adjustments to the menu, so you can have a good time.

labrasserie-brunch-5

Overall, the food was as good as before. I’ll be back for more.

german-wine-flight-tasting-4

What did we do in the German pavilion in Epcot? Instead of having German beer, we did a wine tasting at Weinkellar. Blasphemy right? This space was heavily air-conditioned, which perhaps contributed us to staying inside a bit more.

M loves his red wines, so it was something he wanted to try. We have a lot of good Canadian wine in Vancouver, but we have never tried a German wine before.

german-wine-flight-tasting-1

Each flight has 3 samples and its 2 oz in each cup.

Hex Vom Dasenstein Pinot Noir

german-wine-flight-tasting-3

The Hex vom Dasenstein Pinot Noir is $23.95 /bottle. Not a bad price. Tasted pretty good and the art on the bottle is really nice.

Who would have thought there would be wine tastings in Epcot? What’s awesome about Epcot is that everyone is drinking and having a beer. This is definitely a place for adults to unwind.

fraser-park-1

It’s been years since my last visit to Fraser Park Restaurant in South Burnaby. M comes all the time without me, but it was time to take my food buddies here to the subburbs to enjoy this hole in the wall restaurant for German Breakfast. We came early in the morning and it was already packed by 10am.

I’m always surprised because there’s nothing around here except for warehouses.

fraser-park-inner-1

The interior has nothing special, just a bunch of tables everywhere.

fraser-park-inner-2

It’s not about the decor, its really all about the food they serve.

fraser-park-2

Dee went with their Classic German Breakfast with 3 scrambled eggs with sauteed peppers, onion and cheese. It also has hash browns, sausage, bacon, ham, potato pancake and toast.

fraser-park-5

The rest of us went one step crazier and got the Deluxe German Breakfast. It has everything in the classic German breakfast, but with added Schnitzel and Gravy.

fraser-park-3

Meat on meat on meat. This is the perfect start to the day if you have a big appetite. Everything tasted good and you can’t go wrong with a brunch of grilled meats.

fraser-park-4

Overall, the price is good and you get a large meal. Total comfort food for breakfast right here. Of course they have more than just German Breakfast. They have the usual items you can think of for breakfast and lunch. A true hidden gem.

harrison-hot-springs

M and I spent 2 days at Harrison Hot Springs. Sometimes it’s nice to just get away from the city and enjoy some more nature. The first thing that we did here is eat. M always talks highly of the German restaurant called The Black Forest Restaurant.

blackforest-outer

The Black Forest Restaurant serves up authentic German cuisine. I was super excited to come here since I miss my University days backpacking through Western Europe. Germany was one of my favourite countries to visit.

blackforest-inner

The interior is dated and you can tell this place has been her for a long time.

blackforest-beer

Krombacher Pilsner is what M ordered to go with his schnitzel. I was suprised he ordered it since he rarely orders beer to go with his lunch. It’s a great light beer that has a bit of a citrus finish. Great German beer to go with German food.

blackforest-bratwurst

Bratwurst is served on a bed of SauerKraut, topped with fried onions and peppercorn sauce. It is served with pan-fried potatoes, steamed vegetables and dijon mustard. Very delicious!

blackforest-shnitzel

Schnitzel is pan-fried till it’s golden brown and crunchy. It is topped with mushrooms and a peppercorn sauce. It is served with red cabbage, steamed veggies and pan fried potatoes. M loved it.

Overall, our quick lunch here was delicious. I’d definitely be back again. The decor here isn’t very nice, but we were really drawn by the food. It’s pretty hard to find good German food in Vancouver.

blackforest-store

Black Forest Delicatessen makes a lot of appearances at German-inspired events like the Christmas Market and trade shows around the Lower Mainland. They have some pretty fantastic cured meats to choose from. Their main processing location is in North Vancouver, but they have retail locations in North Vancouver and West Vancouver (Park Royal – South).

Park Royal has gone through much changes over the years and it’s in their newer section of the South side close to the construction.

I really wanted to come to Black Forest Delicatessen after attending the Fraser Valley Food Show and tasting their award-winning pâté at the sausage contest. It was so addictive.

blackforest-inner

The store isn’t too large, but you will find a large deli counter and a few shelves of items that go well with their cured meats.

blackforest-counter

Lots of varieties of sausages, cold cuts, bratwurst, liver sausages, bacon, ham, turkey, salami, dried cured meats, pates, and a lot more.

blackforest-sausages

I find that their staff are very helpful when trying to figure out what to buy. There really are a lot of choices.

blackforest-items

I bought some spicy salami snacks, liver sausage/pâté and savoury crisp crackers.

The savoury crisps were a bit expensive, but it works perfect with the pâté.

blackforest-pate

I got about 50 grams of their herb liver sausage and it was between $1 or $2. I can’t remember the price, but it was cheap! I don’t think I could ever go back to ordering pâté at a restaurant.

blackforest-spread

I ate the pâté with the savoury crisps and it was perfect! Mmm Mmm Mmm.

Black Forest Delicatessen is pretty awesome and has a lot of delicious meats.

La-Brasserie-sign

La Brasserie has been on my t0-eat list for a very long time. I came here for Brunch on a Sunday at 11am and they don’t take reservations. Brunch goes until 3pm, so have you have time to enjoy a taste of brunch. They serve Franco-German food and their brunch menu does look pretty delicious.

They also have a food truck, but obviously they sell different items.

La-Brasserie-inner

I find that if you come right at 11am, you won’t have trouble finding a table as they can seat about 35 people. We decided to sit at the bar, but that turned out to be the best decision ever.

La-Brasserie-bar

Usually 3 women can sit and chat forever, but when sitting at the bar facing the kitchen, you would not hear any of us talking to each other. We were too mesmerized looking at the chefs cook up a storm.

La-Brasserie-cook

We decided on what to order by looking at what the chefs were creating rather than focusing on the menu.

La-Brasserie-french-press

French Press Coffee ($4) in what I needed to kick off the day. The coffee is freshly ground for the order and tasted really good.

La-Brasserie-crepe

Savoury Crepes ($14) has chicken, mushrooms, mornay sauce, and veggies on top. This is what I ordered. It’s not the most visually appealing dish, but I chose it because I love mornay sauce, mushrooms and chicken. It didn’t seem like it would disappoint. It was really good! It’s the type of dish I love. I would definitely order this again.

La-Brasserie-eggs

Roast Pork Neck & Eggs ($14) has poached eggs, potatoes, and hollandaise. TaiwaneseGirl really enjoyed hers and the egg was poached perfectly.

La-Brasserie-poutine

Brasserie Breakfast Poutine ($13) has poached egg, bacon, gravy, truffle oil, and hollandaise all slathered above the fries. CanuckGirl did enjoy it, but after awhile, she was sick of the fries as there were so many. This is perhaps a good item to share among the table rather than eat it individually.

One item that I really wanted to order was the Brasserie Burger. It looked amazing and it’s topped with a mountain of crispy onions. I haven’t been here for dinner yet, but so far, I love brunch here.

Bestie

My coworkers were looking for a place to have lunch. Near our office, there isn’t a lot of choices, so we were delighted that there was a new eatery in Chinatown that serves sausages. I’ve heard much of the buzz online and suggested this place for lunch.

Bestie was inspired by German street food and specialize in hand crafted sausages and pretzels made with the best local ingredients. They don’t serve beer yet, but once their license is approved, it’ll be a full German experience.

Bestie

The interior is quite nice but it’s hard to fit large groups during the lunch time rush. There is about 5 booths and some bar seating. I came with 5 of my coworkers, so we knew it would be a tight squeeze. We grabbed a booth and brought over 2 stools. They have a lot of stools around for that purpose.

Bestie

Bedford’s Ginger Beer ($2.50) it’s non-alcoholic, but it’s refreshing for a hot summer’s day.

Kombucha Wonder Drink ($3) is a small can of sparkling fermented tea. It tastes kinda like vinegar.

Bestie

Currywurst ($8) is Germany’s most popular street food. You get your choice of sausage sliced up and served with a curried ketchup on crispy fries. Magz chose her curry wurst to have the Classic Pork Thüringer sausage.

Bestie

Sausage & Sauerkraut ($9.50) has your choice of sausage with warm sauerkraut, house mustard & crispy fries. I chose mine to have the Classic Pork Thüringer sausage too. The sausage is the best! It’s so juicy and the taste has an absolute perfection as you put it in your mouth. The mustard is sure to add a kick of spiciness.

Bestie

On the table, there is curry powder, salt and pepper if you need a little more spice to your dish.

Overall, there really is only 3 types of items at Bestie – the Currywurst, Sausage & Sauerkraut, and the pretzels. The portion sizes aren’t too large, so you may be hungry in a few hours afterwards. The prices are a bit high for this meal, but you can’t deny that sausage is pretty darn tasty.

Foodology Disclaimer: I was invited to come have a tour of the Vancouver Christmas Market and write about my experience. No worries, I had KoreaGirl with me to keep it unbiased!

The Vancouver Christmas Market is back again for December! The market runs from November 24th to December 24th at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza. It is for all ages and showcases German culture through crafts, food, and entertainment.

Since it is outdoors, remember to put on a thick jacket and mittens! Especially kids! You will probably spend about an hour here if you stroll around and have a few bites to eat. Try to plan your day around the weather since it’s not fun coming here in the rain.

On the opening weekend, there were lots of people lined up.

There are over 55 vendors with authentic German products and some other booths that are quite random, but you can keep reading below to see what I mean.

German Gluhwein

At the German Gluhwein booths, you can indulge in alcoholic mulled wines. If you’re not the boozy kind of people, they also have apple cinder.

Here is the menu at the booth and corresponding prices.

Traditional Gluhwein ($6+$2 deposit) is the traditional beverage of the holidays in German-speaking countries. It is prepared with red wine and spices. The drink packs a punch! It’s quite alcoholic and not for everyone.

Apple Gluhwein ($6 +$2 deposit) is another version and is seasoned with apples. It also alcoholic tasting too.

Black Forest Delicatessen

Black Forest Delicatessen is the most popular booth at the Christmas Market! They are best known for their German Bratwurst and Bavarian Weisswurst. The sauerkraut makes it so good.

Their menu and prices.

All those sausages!

Schnecken Brautwurst ($7.92) is a grilled spiral brautwurst with sauerkraut on a bun. It’s really good! Anything with brautwurst is good.

Das Deutsche Nudel Haus

Das Deutsche Nudel Haus serves up German Schupfnudeln (rolled noodle), as a savory dish with sauerkraut and bacon, or sweet with sugar and cinnamon.

Here’s their menu and prices.

Schupfnoodle with Double Smoked Prosciutto and Sourkraut ($8.48) is definitely filling but would have used more seasoning and filling to give it a better flavour.

Besides food, there are lots of cool items to look at. From ornaments to crafts.

Lots of German-made items.

Cheese! The items they serve are so good too!

Even though there are a lot of German booths, there was also a handful of booths that were not representative of the German culture. For example the cultural hut was promoting the sales to a Chinese performance.

Hurricane Potatoes was here too selling their delectable treats. It is in no way German, so I was very surprised they were here. Since there is no Richmond Night Market in the Winter, come to the Christmas Market for these addictive potato twirls.

There was also Canadian Kettle Korn Extreme giving out samples of yummy kettle corn.

If you want a taste of Canadian Maple Syrup, there is the Sugar Shack to fill up on that sugary goodness.

There is usually a long line up for this area. If you are wondering what they have in here, its a variety of ornate German decorations from clocks to tree ornaments.

At the center of the market is a bandstand.

There are various performances throughout the day and people can listen to holiday music or other forms of entertainment.

There are fun rides on the carousel for kids too! Me and KoreanGirl had fun even though we are not kids anymore. The best part is fighting over the most beautiful horse.

Overall, I’ve been to the Vancouver Christmas Market for the past 3 years and I felt it was strange that the original idea of the market has been a bit diluted this year by letting other types of booths to be part of the market. This is not to say the other booths are bad or anything. This is a strength of the Canadian culture to be inclusive of all.

Old Bavaria Haus is a German restaurant in New Westminster that specializes in Schnitzel. The restaurant is located in an old 2 storey house and has been in business for many many years. It is known to be a local favorite especially for traditional German dishes.

M has a goal of going to all the German restaurants in the Lower Mainland to find the best schnitzel, so M, Scarface and I decided to start at Old Bavaria Haus since it’s the closest.

The interior is quite ornate and you do get a unique dining experience as you are actually in a house.

Warsteiner Beer is a German beer. It’s light, but has a bitter taste. What I disliked about it is how there is so much foam on top. More foam means less beer for me.

Complementary Garlic Bread is a good change from the usual bread. It is crunchy on the outside and has enough garlic spread to make each piece aromatic.

Spatzle “Jaeger Art” ($6.95) is composed of homemade German pasta with blackforest mushroom sauce. It was delicious! The pasta was very soft and light similar to gnocchi, but in strands. The mushroom sauce was very savory like gravy. We all enjoyed the dish and it was easily sharable between others at the table.

Schnitzel and Bratwurst ($18.95) has schnitzel topped with bratwurst served with peppercorn sauce. It also has sides of vegetables, potatoes and onions. M and Scarface enjoyed the taste of the meaty bratwurst, but thought the schnitzel was very similar to Japanese pork cutlet. Nonetheless, they thought the food here was good.

Schnitzel Cordon Bleu ($16.95) has stuffed with blackforest ham and swiss cheese in the schnitzel. It also has sides of vegetables, potatoes, and pickled onions.

When you cut into it, the cheese oozes out and you can see the layer of the pork and the ham. I enjoyed the cool combination.

Overall, the food was good, but it is quite expensive. Given the atmosphere and the service… you are paying for the ambiance. They have a large variety of Schnitzel with different variations. I probably wouldn’t come again if I randomly felt like schnitzel since the price point is quite higher than other places. People usually come here for special occasions.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Reservations highly recommended
  • Accommodates large groups (up to 60 people)
  • Appeals to an older crowd
  • Schnitzel is a must
  • Friendly service
  • Dining in a house

After reading Food For Buddha food blog, they seem to have fallen in love with Fraser Park Restaurant. Since Fraser Park Restaurant is basically in the middle of nowhere, its always hard to find the time to make the trek there. Google Map tells me it would take 30 minutes from my house. Always was a turn off. Since M and I planned to watch Source Code at Metro, I thought it would be perfect to take a trip here.

M drove to Fraser Park in record time, made it there in 15 mins ( beat that google maps! boooya!). On the drive down there, M did not believe there would be any restaurant down in this area. Mostly construction companies and huge warehouses. We got a little bit lost and M got frustrated with me. Once we did arrive, we were super turned off by the exterior….restaurant in the middle of nowhere with lost of construction items everywhere. M had the pissed off Korean look and that basically ruined the mood.

Walking in grumpily, we quickly decided on what to order – beef dip and the deluxe German breakfast.

As we waited patiently waited for our food to arrive, we looked at the decor and was surprised at the amount of people in the restaurant for a weekday lunch.  I can’t imagine the weekend, must be super busy.

M’s Deluxe German Breakfast ($9.95) arrived and his eyes lit up by the large portions and piles of meat.  As you can tell there are A LOT of items in this meal. His mood immediately lit up once he devoured all the meat.

Tis meal contains:

  • Cured Ham
  • 3 egg omelet
  • breakfast sausages
  • Potato fritter
  • Potato wedges
  • Bacon
  • Schnitzel
  • Toast
  • Gravy

Such a long list of items, but M was very very happy. $9.95 for this massive breakfast. No wonder the Germans are so tall and handsome. 😉

I ordered the Beef Dip. I ordered it with salad on the side with italian dressing. The italian dressing comes in little kraft packages, so it is not house made. The salad was nice and fresh and no sign of wilted leaves.

The beef in the beef dip sandwiches were a bit dry, but since you are dunking it into the Gravy anyways, the dryness did not impact the overall taste. The bun is quite soft, so it does clench onto the sauce very well.

M and I both loved the food here. It fulfills al the requirements of being a “hole in the wall” restaurant. a) Crappy exterior b) amazing food c) cheap prices.

I will definitely be visiting again! Anyone want to join me?

Words of Wisdom:

  • Lots of construction around, so be careful
  • Do not let the exterior to deter you from going inside
  • Free Parking
  • Under $10
  • Large portions
