chachis-1

Chachi’s is the newest addition to the Metropolis food court in South Burnaby. They are originally from Calgary and now they have their first location in BC. There are plans to open 2 more locations at Crossiron Mills and Tsawwassen Mills.

Their mission is to make mall food better by crafting gourmet sandwiches with local ingredients. It’s great to see they are working with local suppliers like Arctic Meats, Valbella, Nossack, and Alberta Cheese. Their produce is also sourced from Yen Bros in Vancouver.

chachis-2

Spicy Mac n’ Cheese with Capicollo comes in 2 separate containers. You put the together when you’re ready to eat it.

chachis-3

Taking the first few bites, it was really good. The mac n’ cheese is very cheesy, plus the capicollo added the right amount of spice.

I would order this again.

chachis-4

Hot Philly Sandwich has rib steak, bell peppers, onion, jalapeno, provolone, garlic aioli and spicy mayo. This sandwich has a good amount of spiciness and not too overpowering. I love the amount of provolone in this.

chachis-5

Clubbin’ Sandwich has bacon, turkey, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, garlic aioli, and spicy mayo. Not as exciting as the other sandwiches, but still good.

chachis-2-1

Spicy Italian Sandwich has calabrese salami, cry-cured capicollo, jalapeno, jack cheese, garlic aioli, red pepper spread, red onion, lettuce, and tomato. M loved this.

chachis-2-2

Pork with Mac sandwich has pulled pork, sweet chili BBQ sauce, and then slathered with mac n’ cheese. This is total comfort food, but it would have been nice if the mac n’ cheese was spread evenly. You can see there was more mac n’ cheese on one side than the other. Other than that, it still tasted darn good.

Overall, it’s a nice new option at the food court at Metrotown. Although it is pricier than other options at the food court, it’s pretty darn delicious.

fondway-cafe-6

Fondway Cafe is the latest cafe to open up in South Burnaby right by Metrotown. It is literally a few steps away from the skytrain. They specialize in coffee, tea and asian-inspired pastries.

fondway-cafe-12

The space is quite nice with a lot of natural light coming in. Very hip.

fondway-cafe-13

They have a Chinese and English menu available. At first I grabbed their Chinese menu and had no idea what I was reading. I’m such an asian disgrace.

fondway-cafe-5

They have a pretty large collection of tea along one of their walls.

fondway-cafe-15

During peak hours, it’s pretty hard to find a seat. It’s getting quite popular.

fondway-cafe-14

Once you order and pay, you get a giant clip with your order number.

fondway-cafe-16

Milk tea with grass jelly is served in a super cute cup. The drink wasn’t too sweet, which was great. It tasted pretty awesome and it definitely rivals some of the best milk teas in town.

fondway-cafe-17

Cheesecake with burnt sugar on top was a dense type of cheesecake. Not too sweet which caters to the asian tastebuds.

fondway-cafe-18

My friends got their Okinawa milk tea and they though it was pretty good.

What more could you want? Girl talk, milk tea and cake. Best combination ever.

fondway-cafe-8

If you are a coffee lover, you may want to try some of their specialty coffee drinks like their cold brew on tap and their soda coffee.

fondway-cafe-4

Overall, I love the space and its a great place to chill with friends. You definitely have to grab a slice of cake and milk tea when you’re here.

burger55-1

Burger 55 in Downtown Penticton is best known for their customizable gourmet burgers. It’s also appeared on You Gotta Eat Here on Food Network. On the way back home to Vancouver, we made sure to stop here for lunch. Who can’t resist a burger? I know M and I can’t.

burger55-14

When you get to the front door, they outline the way you must order.

burger55-2

You must grab a clipboard with the order form and fill it out before giving it to the cashier. Even if you want a simple milkshake, you have to fill it out.

burger55-5

Filling it out was like doing a test. So many options putting together your lunch.

burger55-4

burger55-6

burger55-13

The interior is pretty cool and hip.

burger55-7

Chocolate Milkshake ($5.25) I haven’t had a milkshake in a long time, so I just had to indulge and order it. It totally hit the spot.

burger55-9

Custom built burger is what M wanted. He had a beef patty, cheddar cheese, back bacon, fried egg and other toppings. M loved his creation. He can’t eat a burger without back bacon and fried eggs.

burger55-10

The Signature Burger ($9.50) has AAA Angus Beef on a 55 bun with 55 signature spread, 55 buddha sauce, dijon mustard, vinaigrette, spinach, tomato, sprout, roast corn and parmesan. This are their built burgers so you don’t have to make a decision on what to add to your burger. Indecisive people should look at that part of the menu.

burger55-8

Maple Bacon baked Beans ($4) is topped with cheese bits. Surprisingly is tasted pretty good too. Not too sweet either.

burger55-11

Corn Dog ($4.75) looks pretty, but it was pretty damn delicious. The batter was thin and added a nice crunch to the exterior of the hot dog. I would order it again.

burger55-12

It was a good lunch and service was quick. I would come back again. The food is nothing fancy but sometimes you just need a good ol’ burger.

dunns-winner

Dunn’s Famous has undergone a facelift in their Downtown Vancouver location. The old restaurant looked like more of a sports bar rather than a Montreal smoked meat deli. They really wanted to give customers the experience of being in Montreal when the restaurant was founded in 1927. You will see original pictures from that day on their walls.

I came with a few food blogger friends – Sherman, Food Queen and VanFoodies to check out the space as we were invited by the owners.

dunns-inner

dunns-cut

Once you walk in, you will find their new deli counter right by the front door. You can see all the staff preparing your meal right in front of your eyes. The menu is still the same with a few additions like the Wholy Cow Sandwich.

dunns-pepsi

Pepsi is the ultimate pairing with a smoked meat sandwich. The classic cups really bring you back.

dunns-latkes

Latkes ($7) are potato and onion pancakes with sour cream. It comes with 4 pieces per order. They are fried till golden brown and its quite good with the sour cream. I love sour cream.

dunns-deep-fried-pickles

Fried Pickles ($5) has dill pickles that are beer-battered and served with a red pepper mayo. The batter was a tad thick and I wish they used something a bit different with more crunch to the texture.

dunns-motza

Matzoh Ball Soup ($6) has 2 hand-rolled matzoh balls in chicken broth with a sprig of dill. The matzoh balls were pretty large and went with the broth quite nicely.

dunns-meat-poutine

Dunns Poutine ($13) has a bed of fresh hand cut Kennebec fries with BBQ beef gravy and chopped smoked meat piled on top. The fries were really good and crisp. They make the fries in-house, so the fries were deliciously enjoyed by all at the table. No matter which poutine you get, you will enjoy it.

dunns-grilledcheese

Smoked Meat Grilled Cheese ($9) has cheddar cheese on white bread with smoked meat. The smoked meat had medium fat, which was good but pretty average I would say. Perhaps it needed more cheddar so it could ooze all over the place.

dunns-small

4oz Monteal Smoked Meat Sandwich ($11) is hand-sliced to order, served traditionally on light rye bread with yellow mustard. You can choose the different cuts of smoked meat and mustard if you want to customize it a little bit.

dunns-12oz

12 oz Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich is what we specifically asked for. On the menu it goes up to 8oz, but we knew it couldn’t hurt to ask. We got it with yellow mustard and a fat cut of smoked meat so it is extra juicy and delicious. Oh man, was it ever good! Since you are eating out, you must get the fat cut.

dunns-12

Yummy!

dunns-reuben-2

Reuben ($16) has smoked meat double stacked on dark rye bread with sauerkraut, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. It was delicious and the sauerkraut paired really well.

dunns-cake

Dunns Famous Cheesecake ($9) uses their original Montreal recipe, baked in house with fresh strawberries & strawberry coulis. It has a unique taste that is quite different that other cheesecakes.

Overall, same great food with a new look. Definitely more casual dining that makes all customers enjoy the atmosphere.

bao-down-door

Bao Down is located in Gastown and they specialize in steamed bun (bao) sandwiches. Just imagine an asian taco. I came here with BusanGirl to catch up since we haven’t seen each other in a little while. Bao Down has been on my to-eat list for a while, so I thought it was a great time to take a visit.

bao-down-water

The space was quite nice with infused water too! We ended up eating outside since it was a nice day.

bao-down-2worldscollide

Two Worlds Collide Steamed Bao ($6) has star anise and ginger braised pork belly, chicharon and crispy pork belly with hoi sin glaze, carrots, daikon, scallions and Korean spicy sauce.

The bun came out barely warm. I thought that it was weird that it wasn’t hot. The ingredients that make up this bao is fusion as you wouldn’t normally have chicharon and Korean spicy sauce remotely close to each other. The flavour was ok, but because the bao wasn’t hot, it made eating the whole eating process unpleasurable.

bao-down-chicken

Bao Chicka Bao Bao Steamed Bao ($6) has fried lemongrass and garlic marinated free range chicken breast, crispy garlic, palm sugar and fish sauce glaze, fresh cilantro, garlic scape mayo, pickled carrots and scallions. This bao was slightly warmer than the previous one, but still not hot enough to fully enjoy.

Since they did use chicken breast, the meat was dry so it reminded me of a chicken strip in a bao.

bao-down-kimchi-fries

Kimchi Fries (Small – $5) has housemade double fried kennebec potato fries, crispy pork belly, sweet soy, crispy garlic, bean sprouts, garlic scape mayo and scallions. This is so loaded! I can’t even imagine what the large size looks like.

The fries were very crisp and super enjoyable since its double fried. It keeps its crispyness for a long time. There are big pieces of pork belly too.

bao-down-wrapped

bao-down-grilled-cheese

Grilled Cheese and Kimchi Sandwich ($10) Smoked applewood cheddar, kimchi and miso mayo. This missed the mark of what a grilled cheese should look and taste like. There was barely any cheese in it. We mostly tasted the kimchi and a bit of the mayo. In a sense, you could call this a kimchi sandwich.

bao-down-seafood-chowder

Seafood Chowder was their soup of the day. It has a good amount of seafood inside and had a delicious creamy taste, but it was also not very hot.

I’m usually not that picky, but a majority of the food wasn’t very hot when it came out. I know I didn’t take a long time taking pictures as I’m usually pretty quick.

bao-down-exterior

Overall, interesting concept and unique menu items, but the taste fell flat a bit and most items we not warm enough. The only item I really liked was the Kimchi fries.

food-squamish

A few weeks ago, I was at the Squamish Music Festival to see Drake perform. Besides seeing all the other performances, we had to eat. They had this huge area with different booths and food trucks. Lots to choose from and there were a few places that the line ups were super long. It reminded me of the PNE or some sort of carnival.

grilled-chees-truck-line

Melt Town Grilled Cheese and Poutine was one of the many trucks there. Their parent company – Tin Lizzy is one of Canada’s Largest special events Concession companies. They also have a fleet of over 10 food trailers/trucks professionally built to provide food for large amount of people.

I gravitated to this truck since I was cravings some grilled cheese. They had many varieties but I had to go with the classic. Can’t go wrong with that.

grilled-chees-truck-sandwich

Classic grilled cheese ($7) was oozing with the crispy cheese on the edges. They also give you a tomato dipping sauce. I loved the crunchy cheese bits around the sides. Probably the most enjoyable part about the sandwich.

I didn’t like the bread as I felt like it needed more crispiness and butter on the bread. If the cheese is crispy, I don’t see why they can’t make the bread crazy delicious.

Scent of a Sandwich is located close to Main St and Hastings St. This place always catches my eye because it’s one of the only places near my office to send mail. My coworker and I thought we should try this place out as we were quite curious about it.

They started off as a catering company, but now has a store to serve sandwiches to the Downtown Eastside community. They roast their meats in-house, source local ingredients and bake fresh bread.

whitespot-burnaby

Having a White Spot so close to our place is awesome when I need a quick and no-frills type of meal. For a chain restaurant, it’s not bad and I always find something I want on the menu. One item I can never go wrong with are their burgers. They have been making them since the very beginning with 100% fresh Canadian Beef.

Currently they have a “Burger Guest Stars” menu at White Spot for a limited time until May 31st. They have a line up of premium burgers:

  • Truffled Mushroom Bigger Burger
  • Steakhouse Supreme Bigger Burger
  • Crispy Almond Chicken Burger
  • Johnstone Strait Salmon Burger
  • Sriracha Goat Cheese Turkey Burger

Some of these are completely new to the menu and some are past guest favourites that they have brought back.

M and I came to grab lunch on the weekend and give them a try.

whitespot-mushroom-burger

Truffled Mushroom Bigger Burger ($14.99) is a twist on their Monty Mushroom Bigger Burger. It has 6 oz. of 100% fresh Canadian beef burger with truffled mushrooms, Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato ,and  Triple “O” sauce.

M really liked the patty as it was just screaming with flavour.

whitespot-poutine-burger

Baked Potato Poutine (+$3.49) has cheese curds and gravy loaded with classic baked potato toppings – bacon, sour cream and green onion. By upgrading to the poutine, we had so much food! We could barely make a dent into poutines. Tastes good when you reheat it at home and crack an egg on top. Mmmmmm.

whitespot-turkey-burger

Sriracha Goat Cheese Turkey Burger ($14.99) is a new item they have introduced. It has a chargrilled BC Turkey patty topped with Happy Days Goat Cheese mixed with Sriracha sauce, bacon, apple relish, arugula, tomato and mayo. It is served with coleslaw and a side. Surprisingly it was really good! I never normally order a turkey burger, but they sauce and the bacon make this more flavourful.

whitespot-poutine

I decided to upgrade my side to have the Monty Mushroom Macon Poutine (+$3.99).

whitespot-pop

Of course, we always wash it down with a glass of Coca Cola.

There’s a new cozy bistro called Rouge Bistro located on 2nd Ave and Manitoba. Just right outside the Olympic Village. It has only been open for the last month and a half. I’ve actually come here a few time during my lunch hour because they have very homey tasting sandwiches and soups.

I’ve never had anything I was disappointed with . The shop is a family owned business and they want to provide customers with yummy food that makes them smile. Plus, most items on their menu is under $10. Perfect for the lunch hour.

Rouge-Bistro-inner

There aren’t a lot of seats, but I haven’t found it a problem yet. It’s not too busy, so you will still find a seat. As they are still new, I can see this place being quite busy in a few months.

Their menu is mostly comprised of salads, sandwiches, soups and daily specials. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but they have a good selection for lunch.

Rouge-Bistro-combo

Wild Salmon Walnut Pesto Sandwich ($9) and it comes with a side of soup. The side of soup I chose was mushroom and it was good! Lots of mushrooms were in it and it was quite yummy.

Rouge-Bistro-sandwich

There was a lot of the salmon in it and they do not skimp out at all! It tasted very good and healthy. Plus, I was super stuffed when I finished it all!

Rouge-Bistro-set

The Roast Beef Sandwich ($9) and a side of broccoli soup. This was a simple meal but it tasted so good. I don’t know what their secret is, but it was just really good.

Rouge-Bistro-roastbeef

The owner comes in here every morning to roast his beef and lamb before the lunch rush. Inside the sandwich is mushrooms, cheddar and the roasted beef. I think the reason why it tasted so good is because everything is fresh! The beef was still very moist and flavourful.

Rouge-Bistro-salad

Chicken Soup, Quinoa Chickpea peanut sauce salad, Chicken Seaweed Salad was a nice trio for lunch if you wanted something a tad healthier.

Rouge-Bistro-curried-chicken

Curried Quarter Chicken ($9) comes with your choice of breast or leg/thigh. I chose the leg/thigh because I love dark meat and its juicier. This also comes with a side of soup! The soup this day was french onion soup. This chicken was really good and it has a few chunk of potatoes on the bottom.

I really liked the pork belly, but then again, who doesn’t?

Bahn-Mi-Boys-spice-bao

Braised Beef Steamed Bao ($3.49) is what my aunt ordered. She thought this was ok, but it seemed strange to her as she’s never tried anything like this in Asia.

Fries were ordered too. M needed some extra carbs since he was really hungry. The fries were ok, but nothing special.

Overall, the bagels are great and that Montreal Smoked meat is mighty delicious. Highly recommended.

fliptop-truck-truck

Mags and I were finding a place on Main street to eat lunch and then we stumbled upon Fliptop Filipino Fusion Food Truck. It’s one of the newer food trucks to hit the town and we just had to try it. They are usually on Main street on Saturdays, but it may change, So check out their schedule before going to the location.

fliptop-truck-menu

Their menu has a good amount of items and everything sounds delicious. I personally love Filipino food, so I was very excited.

fliptop-truck-in

The aroma coming from this truck smelled amazing.

fliptop-truck-adobo

Flippin Adobo ‘Fili’ Cheesesteak ($12) has shaved prime ribs sauteed in Adobo sauce, melted provolone cheese, smoked chipotle aioli and crispy leeks served on a hoagie bun.

fliptop-truck-steak

This was so good and there was plenty of meat. It was very tender and full of flavour. Highly recommended.

fliptop-truck-breakfast

Long Silog Rice Bowl ($12) has cured pork sausage, fried egg, slaw, crispy leeks, garlic fried rice and a sriracha aioli. It was a good portion size and Mags enjoyed it so much, she bought a second box for her boyfriend.

fliptop-truck-calamansi

Calamansi ($3) is what we washed our meal down with. Mmmmmm goood!

Overall, it was great. The wait wasn’t too long and the food tasted SO GOOD. I would highly recommend this food truck. If you see it, so grab some food!!

hemmingways-patio

Finding good brunch places on the Friday on the long weekend was tough. The places we wanted to go to were closed, so we had to wander near Yorkville for some food. It was really tough, so we settled for Hemingway’s Restaurant and Bar.

Hemingway’s has been around for over 30 years with a New Zealand inspired menu. Their 3rd floor patio is huge. Much better than sitting on the first or 2nd floor where it is much more dark .

hemmingways-benny

Eggs Benedict ($9.99) has two soft poached eggs served on a toasted English muffin, layered with grilled peameal bacon
and topped with hollandaise sauce.

hemmingways-yolk

The egg was soft and yummy. The english muffins were quite thin and it worked well with the eggs benny since you can really taste the egg and bacon.

The only downside of this dish were the potatoes. Tasteless and bland.

hemmingways-burge

The Down Under Burger ($13.99) has ground beef patty, fried egg, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, relish and a slice of beetroot. Garnished with a slice of tomato, onion, pickle and lettuce, served on a lightly toasted Kaiser bun. We wanted to add a slice of pineapple for $0.50, but they didn’t have any available.

M substituted with yam fries and man, those are some awesome yam fries.

hemmingways-burger

Classic Cumberland Burger ($9.99) has ground beef and garnished with a slice of tomato, onion, pickle and lettuce, served on a lightly toasted egg bun. Fabo also substituted her fries for yam fries.

The food was decent, but what was the best were those yam fries for some reason. It was crispy on the outside and so smooth on the inside.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-sign

Jean Philippe is the Executive Pastry Chef at ARIA Resort & Casino, has brought his expertise and passion for French gourmet to Jean-Philippe Pattisserie. The pattisserie is located next to the elevators to the hotel rooms. There is also another location inside Bellagio.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-gifts

There is a huge retail area where you can purchase chocolate as gift to bring home.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-packaged

Some items can be quite pricey, but its really good.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-lineup

A lot of people love to come here for the crepes. During peak hours, you can see a long line up.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-crepes

We were told the crepes were really good, so we decided to get a few of them. The crepes range from $7 to $12 depending on what you are ordering. We got the chicken crepe ($11.95), Salmon crepe ($11.95) and Berry crepe ($10.50).

Jean-philippe-patisserie-chicken-crepe

Chicken crepe ($11.95) comes with grilled chicken breast, spinach, chipotle sauce, piquillos peppers, swiss cheese and a lot of mayo. The chicken is all hiding inside. It’s not bad at all.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-salmon-crepe

Salmon crepe ($11.95) has caper/dill sauce, smoked salmon, swiss cheese, asparagus, spinach, and pico de gallo. They really don’t skimp out on the salmon. Theres a lot on top. There’s none inside the crepe, but its good enough.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-berry-crepe

Berry Crepe ($10.50) has marinated berries, whipped cream and powdered sugar on top of the crepe. It uses a different crepe batter than the savoury crepes. The marinated berries was quite sour for some reason, but it was still enjoyable. I think I would have been happier with the nutella version but the berries looked good.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-gelato-choice

Besides crepes, they also have gelato. There’s a good amount of flavours.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-gelato

Strawberry gelato scoop came in a cute cup. My little sister sure enjoyed it.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-snacks

Another section of the cafe has cake, snack items and stuff like that. The next day, we had an early start to the grand canyon, so we just decided to grab a few things quickly.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-baked

Croissants, blueberry muffin and a bran muffin. It was decent, but it wasn’t amazing.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-fruit-juice

I got a fruit cup and orange juice. Pretty simple stuff but I didn’t want anything too heavy for breakfast.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-parfait

My little sister got a yogurt parfait, it has granola and fresh berries. It was pretty good since it has both the fruit and granola. A good mix of items.

Overall, good selection of items for the sweet tooth or the savoury tooth..if thats such a thing. The items aren’t overly amazing, but its still decently good.
