Gimme a break, Gimme a break, Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar.

For Chinese New Year, Kit Kat has launched Green Tea flavoured Kit Kat Bars into grocery stores across Canada. Green Tea / Matcha Kit Kat has been a long standing popular flavour in Japan and across Asia. You would only be able to find these in specialty stores with Japanese writing on the packaging.

I noticed at my local grocery store the new display ready for Chinese New Year in February. This flavour went quickly and was only $1 per pack. I bought myself 2 packs before they sold out.

Inside the package are 4 pieces of the delicious chocolate. It’s sharable between 4 people if you insist, but it’s so good that I would have it all to myself.

The crunchy wafers inside covered in the milk green tea chocolate is tasty. One of my favourites beside the regular Kit Kat chocolate bar. If you see it in stores, pick it up because it’s not going to be available for a long time.

The latest candy to hit Canadian grocery store shelves are Coffee Crisp Stix with Salted Caramel for a limited time. It was on sale for $1 for this 32g package that contains 2 wafer bars. It’s like a Twix Bar.

Inside, the 2 wafer bars are good sizes and great for sharing assuming you want to share.

Inside, there are the layers of wafers, chocolate and salted caramel. I am a huge of the original Coffee Crisp flavour, but the caramel changes the flavour a bit in the wrong direction. It seems sweeter and not addictive enough to eat the whole pack. I’ll stick to the regular Coffee Crisp chocolate bar.

Thai Iced Tea is an absolute treat and my friend finally encouraged me to make this at home instead of spending all my money drinking these at restaurants. There’s many variations of making Thai Iced Tea, but I don’t like buying so many ingredients that might go wasted if I don’t use them all. It’s always a hit when I have friends over and it’s pretty easy to make and you can’t go wrong with it.

This article contains Amazon affiliate links. All you need for this recipe is the Thai tea mix, granulated sugar, and cream. So simple! You can now have it at home all the time.

Thai Tea Mix can be hard to find in stores, so I opted to go get it from Amazon as well as a fine mesh strainer. The mesh strainer is important as it will remove as much tea leaves as possible to give you a clear tea. Sometimes some sediments will form even with a fine strainer, but it won’t affect your enjoyment of the drink. I preferred this option of buying online rather from hunting store by store in hopes they carry this tea mix. Plus, the 400g bag of tea mix lasts quite a while.

[tab id=1]

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Thai Tea Mix
  • 8 cups Water
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar ( or to your liking)
  • Cream
  • Ice

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, bring water to a boil. Add the Thai tea mix in a mesh bag strainer and let it boil for 15 minutes.
  2. Add in sugar and stir to dissolve. Taste to ensure it’s your desired level of sweetness.
  3. Turn off the heat and let the tea steep for 30 minutes as it cools. (The stronger the tea, the better the tea will taste.)
  4. Take the mesh bag with the tea leaves out of the pot.
  5. You can make the Thai Iced Tea ahead of time and have the tea chilling in the fridge OR if you can’t control yourself, drink it right away if it’s cool enough.
  6. Fill the glass with ice and pour in the tea leaving a little room for the cream. About 3 tablespoons for a glass.
  7. Stir and enjoy.

I saw KitKat Rubies on sale at the grocery store and made them my sweet gifts for this year. You can find them at most stores for a limited time. It seems to have been released just for the holiday season.

Inside the box are individually wrapped gems of delicious truffle and fine hazelnut pieces draped over a classic Kit Kat crispy wafer. 10 pieces inside each box.

They’ve sold these in other countries but I think it’s the first time they have had this in Canada. They look like gems inside the box.

Each bar is small and in bite size pieces. Two bites and its done.

The taste is like if KitKat and Ferrero Rocher had a baby, it would be KitKat Rubies. The texture from the nuts are a nice touch to the crisp wafer.

With the holidays coming to an end, it’ll mean these will go on sale.

For the holiday season, there is an alternative to egg nog for those are lactose intolerant – Almond Nogg – a creamy, delicious blend of traditional egg nog flavours and real almonds.  This rich and dairy and egg free holiday nog fortified almond beverage might be what you need to liven up a party.

Mix some spiced rum, cinnamon and almond nogg to spice up your holidays. It’s not bad at all. I avoid egg nogg since sometime my stomach doesn’t agree with too much dairy. You can still have fun if you’re lactose intolerant or just avoiding dairy for dietary or health reasons.

Eau Claire Distillery is Canada’s premier craft distillery, offering a true farm-to-glass experience just 35 minutes southwest of downtown Calgary. Eau Claire prides itself in sourcing locally-farmed ingredients known and respected in Alberta’s agriculture community.

For the holidays, they released their seasonal Christmas Gin, which is flavoured with Frankincense and Myrrh — two of the three ancient wise men gifts.

Since gold is hardly digestible, and the ancient spices of Frankincense and myrrh were viewed as both priceless and flavorful, Eau Claire Distillery decided to make their traditional London-style Gin with these two unique botanicals.

Specially formulated for the holiday season, the spice resins give the a gin a beautiful mouth feel with a hint of almost a lemony, balsamic taste. It’s pretty good in making cocktails to go with cranberry juice or with iced tea. Even a classic gin and tonic will go well with it.

You can only get this shipped within Canada or at select shops. If you are a gin drinker and you’re looking for something unique, I think you’ll enjoy their take on the Christmas Gin.

Not sure what to bring to the next holiday party? Why not whisky? With the cold winter upon us, having a bottle of good whisky can liven up the party. When the guys are over for board games, whisky usually makes an appearance.

The liquid inside of Laphroaig Select is hand picked by Laphroaig’s Master Distiller, John Campbell, from the finest casks comprising the Laphroaig portfolio – Quarter Cask, PX Cask, Triple Wood and Ten Year Old – creating a subtle blend of peat, oak and sweetness. The bottles come in 750 mL bottle.

The inspiration behind Laphroaig Select, and the unique method of aging, comes from the history and family lineage of Laphroaig. Ian Hunter, the last founding family member to own Laphroaig, was influential in experimenting with new ways of distilling and was one of the first to combine American bourbon casks with traditional European casks to create new flavours. Laphroaig Select takes inspiration from Ian, creating a new expression with both classic and new flavours.

Drinking whisky is always better with others. Whether you make an Old Fashioned, have it on the rocks, or have it neat. Best to have this neat on your first try to be able to take in the peat and then the ripe red fruits from the PX and Olorosso casks. It ends on a warm feeling with smoke and spice.

You can find this at your local liquor store.

Auchentoshan is a Single Malt Scotch Malt. Founded by Irish refugees in 1825 on the outskirts of Glasgow, Auchentoshan is one of the last active distilleries in the Lowlands.

This particular bottle is a limited release single malt from Auchentoshan that’s a product of their ‘New Malt Order’ cocktail competition. You can find this at private liquor stores in BC.

Blends created by 12 bartenders from five countries were brought together to create The Bartender’s Blend, using whiskies spanning five decades (the youngest of which were 6 years old). That includes whiskies matured in ex-Laphroaig casks, rum casks, red wine barriques, German oak casks and American oak casks.

You’ll taste dried apricot, milk chocolate, honey and green tobacco leaf. As you finish the drink, it will keep you nice and warm.

You can make yourself an Old Fashioned using:

  • 1.5 oz Auchentoshan
  • 1 sugar cube cube
  • splash of water
  • 2 dashes of bitters
  • Orange rind
  • Ice

If you’re looking for something different to try, I think you’ll like this Auchentoshan Bartender’s Edition Whisky.

Pepsi released their Salted Caramel flavour and it’s just so interesting that my friend Josh grabbed me a bottle when he was in the US. With the trend of salted caramel being popular in ice cream, chocolate and other sweet treats, I guess it was about time it made it’s way into our colas. At first I didn’t know what to think about this flavour as I would imagine it would be super sugary.

When I took my first sips, it was initially Pepsi, but then you can taste the caramel flavour coming through. I wasn’t able to detect any salty flavours in there. Fun to try, but we didn’t really care much for it. As it is a limited time only flavour, I don’t really seeing it sticking around for too long. Regular Pepsi is still better.

Apparently, Bugles in Ranch flavour is a special edition in Canada. I’ve never really noticed until my husband brought me back a pack from the grocery store to review. It comes in 213g bags and can be found at most large retailers.

It comes in the same shape as any regular Bugles but the ranch is coating each chip. Upon munching on a few pieces, it’s pretty good. The ranch is subtle and not too strong. Just the right amount the balance the taste of the Bugles.

I personally don’t find them that special as a special edition flavour. I would grab this for any of my snacking if I craved Bugles.

Cheetos has introduced white cheddar puffs shaped like snowflakes and can be found in Canada and the US. This is perfect for the holiday season especially with all the parties happening.

They come in 4 different shapes and has a texture of the regular airy cheese puffs. While easting them, the white cheddar does coat your fingers similar to the regular Cheetos. As for the taste, it was good and cheesy.

I would definitely bring this to other holiday parties in the next few weeks for December. It’s only here for a limited time, so get them before it is gone. They have had other versions of these before like the Bag of Bones for Halloween.

“What do you think sea air tastes like?” It’s a question that I giggled over with a friend as we waited eagerly in a crowded room of excited whisky tasters above The Blackbird on a rainy Tuesday night. On the table that we stood by, the words sea air, vanilla, peat smoke, cinnamon spice, citrus, lime and coconut were printed on a sign next to a bottle of Bowmore’s No. 1 Malt.

Bowmore, one of the oldest scotch distilleries in the world at 238 years young, recently held a tasting event featuring 4 of their 5 core whiskies. At their promotional tasting event we got the try their 12 year, 15 year and 18 year whiskies along with their No. 1 malt which is an unspecified age. With the selection side by side, we had the lucky opportunity to taste for ourselves whether older whisky really is better.

Bowmore No. 1 Malt

Two special features of this drink: 1) it’s not age specified, 2) it’s aged in first fill casks. In other words, it was the first Scotch, but not the first drink, to be aged in a certain barrel and therefore extracts more flavours from the wood. While there’s no age, it is the youngest and aged at least 3 years. This also means it has retained more of the smokiness than other older bottles. It was sweet, as sweet as straight whisky can be, and had a spicy but not burning after taste. As for sea air, I can’t tell if it was the power of suggestion or if I really smelled and tasted it but there was a hint of something indescribable.

Bowmore 12 Year

Sips were described as “sweet and delicious heather honey and gentle peat smoke.” It’s starkly more subtle than the No. 1. No sweetness or spice jumps out like in the first drink but still quite smoky. As expected, age allows the flavours to start blending.

Bowmore 15 Year

With less smokiness than the 12 year, it seemed like the sweetness and other complex flavours had returned. It tasted more bold and had an extra kick at the end. Unlike the 12, the 15 is aged in both bourbon and sherry casks which is part of where the new flavours came from.

Bowmore 18 Year

Throughout the night, presenters praised how well the 18 goes with desserts. I can see where they’re coming from. The flavours and smokiness are much more balanced than the 12 and at the same time it seemed like I could taste more depth. The drink is subtle but still strong. It would be a very interesting pairing with desserts for those who like rich ones as opposed to super sweet ones. This was definitely the most drinkable and safest pick for a crowd favorite.

Oysters & Whisky?

Speaking of pairings. They served an “oyster luge” at this event. Sounds weird but it’s worth a taste.

As the night came to a close and we sat in old wooden theater seats with scotches in hand, my friend and I discussed our favorites. Mine: the No. 1 and the 15 year. Him: the 12 year and the 18 year. We liked them for different reasons. I liked bolder drinks and he liked them mellow. Whiskies do become more balanced and rounded in flavour as they age. But there are other factors affecting the taste too. In the end, I think it really comes down to personal preference and not solely the age. I must note, we didn’t get to try the Bowmore 25 year. That’s a full 7 year difference.  It could be in a completely different realm of flavour.

Pringles launched a limited edition Tikka Masala flavour in grocery stores across Canada and when I saw it, I just had to buy them.

Tikka Masala is an Indian dish with chunks of roasted marinated chicken in a spiced curry sauce. Usually, yogurt, cream, tomato, onion, garlic, ginger, chili pepper, and coconut goes into the sauce.

From first bites of the chip, I could taste the onion, garlic, ginger and chili pepper. There was a good amount of kick to the chips and I enjoyed it. I would buy it again as it’s a pretty unique flavour.

Casa di Mama is the official pizza of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the perfect snack for game day. Since I’m from Vancouver, we have the BC Lions in the Western Division of the CFL. They have had 6 Grey Cup wins in 1964, 1985, 1994, 2000, 2006, and 2011. Their chances don’t look good for 2017, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy watching the other Western teams get a chance at the Grey Cup.

Since the weather has been getting pretty cold lately, home-gating can be just as good as being at the game itself. Surrounding yourself with friends, family, table full of drinks and snacks make it enjoyable. Plus, you do save money that way.

Dr. Oetker’s Casa di Mama is an authentic Italian pizzeria style thin crust that rises around the edge. You pop it into the over for 13 – 15 minutes and it’s done. It’s pretty handy having them in the freezer. Fun fact, when buying a double-doored fridge a few years ago, one of the deciding factors was having one that had a freezer wide enough to store frozen pizza.

I had the 3 Meat, which is topped with spiced tomato sauce and deli meats including pepperoni, smoked ham and chunks of Italian sausage.  Deluxe has spiced tomato sauce, pepperoni, brightly coloured peppers, red onions and mushrooms. Quick and satisfying meal for the game.

Dr. Oetker’s frozen pizza are sold at all major grocers across Canada, just look in the frozen section. Happy home-gating during the Division Finals and Grey Cup.

This blog post was sponsored by Dr. Oetker but the opinions are all my own.

Fuud is a meal kit delivery service that provides fresh, locally-sourced ingredients with weekly delicious recipes from local chefs in Vancouver, Canada. They have 3 types of meal plans to choose from – Omnivore, Vegetarian and Gluten-free.

These days, I love cooking more and more since I want to try to be a bit healthier and knowing what are the things that go into the dish. I essentially work 2 jobs, so finding the time to figure out what I can make for dinner can be a challenge on the super busy weeks. I gave Fuud a try for a week creating 3 of their dishes from the Omnivore meal plan. I picked all 3 meals online a week in advance and when it arrived, they texted me that it was on my doorstep with a message and photo. Since I wasn’t home, I made my husband bring it into the house when he got back home.

3 boxes of ingredients were delivered with the corresponding recipe cards.

Cod Tacos with Lime Crema

This taco was more like a burrito. Massive and didn’t function well as a taco. I would have preferred smaller tortilla shells.

Miso and Honey Roasted Chicken

This dish was pretty cook and I never would have thought to cook a cauliflower in slices rather then roast the florets. The miso honey butter on the chicken was a good idea too.

Wild Salmon Confit with Cream Sauce

This was my favourite dish of the 3. Easy to make and pretty addictive.

Final Thoughts

All 3 recipes were relatively easy to make and I can reuse the technique to make any dishes of my own in the future. Price per servings range from $10.45 to $12.95, which is OK. By using Fuud, you know what is in your meal and you have pride that you made it yourself. I liked this for the week since I didn’t have to worry if I had enough ingredients to make a meal. Just grab a box and follow the instructions.

Lay’s BLT is the latest flavour to hit grocery store shelves. I feel like I’ve seen them before since it’s seems like a normal flavour compared to some of the other types that have come out this year. I was browsing the grocery store and almost missed this. The “Limited Time Only” caught my eye and it was a flavour I’ve never tried before. A BLT is a sandwich made with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, and bread.

The BLT is on a regular Lay’s chip and had a predominant smokey bacon flavour with a hint of sour cream. It’s hard to simulate the BLT experience, but the kinda got it with the bacon taste. I thought it taste ok, nothing ground breaking in terms of flavour, but it was decent.

I love the holidays season and it’s just around the corner. A great time for friends and family to gather around the home and enjoy in delicious eats and conversation. My kitchen is really the heart of the home as that’s where all the delicious baking happens. I really like the Real Canadian Superstore to pick up a few key pieces in their home collection. The quality and price are very good. Below are a few of my favourite items available this year.

Ornaments

There are some super cute ornaments and the sock monkey really stole my heart. I love mismatched ornaments because I feel like each ornament has a story to tell. They even have another ornament with a skiing squirrel.

Plaid Everything

I love the plaid pattern on some of their items as it gives it a very Canadian feel. It gives it a warm cozy feel and the nutcracker all dressed up is a modern twist to what is traditionally done.

Zodiac Mugs and Candles

If you love constellations, they have a bunch of zodiac/astrology inspired items. They make a good gift for a bit of personalization if you know the other person’s sign.

Nordic Icon Mugs

These oversized mugs are so cute and can you imagine them all filled with hot chocolate?

Holiday Charcuterie Plate

All parties need an obligatory charcuterie platter and possibly some wine to pair with it. Their huge wooden cutting boards work so well as a base for all the meats and cheeses. To tie it all together, they have some festive napkins too.

Final Thoughts

There’s so much more that I didn’t cover as they have so many new items coming up to help you make your home feel a bit more festive. After getting a sneak peek of their collection, I already purchased a few items for my home and I didn’t break the bank. Very affordable and I’ve never had an issue with quality.

Choices Markets is a BC owned and operated grocer focused on delivering high quality, organic, natural, and specialty foods. I wanted to challenge myself to purchase only BC grown produce and products made in BC. Since my local farmers market isn’t open on Sunday, Choices Markets is a good option to find a plethora of local products.

What I like about their produce section is that they label were the produce comes from. You won’t have a hard time knowing if it’s from Canada or the US. Choices has gained recognition as an advocate of supporting the great number of BC dedicated food producers.

My Grocery Haul

A lot of people thinking buying local and organic will cost you, but if you look out for sales and know whats in season, it can help cut down in costs. Since it is the Fall, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, apples, and many other items are in season. I found looking for packaged products made in BC a lot harder since it’s not always evident from the packaging. Luckily, I noticed a few great items in store since I always have an eye open in the BC food scene. Wize Monkey Coffee Leaf TeaSpread em’ Kitchens DipsRoyals Kombucha, and Better With Ice Cream are a few local products that are gaining quite a buzz lately.

My Dinner

Here is what I made with a few of the items I picked up at Choices Markets. Deliciously tender rack of lamb, potatoes, green beans and tomatoes. A simple healthy meal and I cooked everything in one pan in the oven. We are pretty lucky living in BC since we do have some great farmers growing a diverse amount of crops and raising different types of animals.
