Green Lettuce

Taiwanesegirl sometimes takes me to the strangest places I’ve never heard of. She took a bunch of us out to Green Lettuce Restaurant saying how amazing their food is. When I heard ‘Indian Style Chinese food’, I wasn’t sure what to think about it. It was hard to wrap my head around how those two cuisines would fuse together.

There’s parking in the back and this restaurant was packed early in the evening. It’s always good to make reservations here.

Green Lettuce

When we arrived, we were glad we made a reservation since most of the tables were already occupied.

Green Lettuce

Vegetable Pakora with Chutney Sauce seemed like it was a fitting choice to have at this restaurant. I was really good!

Green Lettuce

Chicken lettuce wrap was probably more on the Chinese side and it was also pretty darn good. It’s not exactly the same as the usual Chinese restaurants as they spice this dish quite differently.

Green Lettuce

Beef chow mein had the very crispy noodles topped with the vegetables and the beef. I’ve always been a fan of the crispy noodles ever since I was a little kid. What I love about this dish is that it stays pretty darn crispy even after they put the stuff on top of it.

Green Lettuce

Masala Chicken with Roti Nan was more on the Indian side, but we still loved it. They understand the amazing power of spices.

Green Lettuce

Chicken Fried Rice was pretty darn good too.

We all left happy and the prices were pretty good. I never thought I would like Indian style Chinese food, but it was so good. The combination of the spices work wonders with Chinese food. The taste was very flavourful. We all loved it and were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. It doesn’t look very appetizing from the outside of the restaurant but they do have some great food.

Siddhartha’s Indian Kitchen is a restaurant on commercial drive and specializes in healthy, sustainable, and delicious Indian food. I’ve been here a few times and I love the food. I came this time with KoreanGirl since she wanted to try something new. We haven’t had Indian food in a while, so I thought I would take her here.

They cater to people who are vegetarian, vegan and  gluten-free too. It’s nice since you know there will be a yummy dish awaiting you no matter what your diet restrictions are.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

The interior is spacious and has lots of seats.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

Aloo Tikki ($6.99) comes with 3 crispy potato cakes served with delhi sauces and pomegranates. It was so good! The blend of the spices are so yummy! All KoreanGirl and I could say during this was “It’s so good”. There is also a vegan option too.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

Murg Makhani aka Butter Chicken ($10.99)  has a Shahi sauce infused with fenu-greek leaves, cream, tomato marinade and a hint of coconut . It is also tossed with boneless marinated chicken. This is one of their most popular items and it comes with rice.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

Palak Paneer ($11.99) is made of a spinach blend with unfermented cottage cheese sticks and served with a salad and rice. There is plenty of paneer inside with creamy creamy spinach. Definitely delicious and ITS SO GOOD. One of my favorite items here.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

Garlic Naan ($3) is made freshly in a tandoori oven with roasted garlic and butter. A must if you are here.

Siddhartha's Indian Kitchen

The meal was pretty awesome and the 3 items didn’t disappoint at all. KoreanGirl loved it too and we both agreed it was good stuff!

While roaming around Chai Wan doing some shopping, my Grandpa took us to the International Curry House for some yummy curry at lunch time. I had no idea where he was taking us or why curry of all places.

The International Curry house has been around for 30 years and serving delicious curry to the people of Hong Kong. It has been featured on Lonely Planet and CNNgo.

The interior is alright. Pretty standard and nothing too fancy.

They do have nice chandeliers installed to enhance the atmosphere, but it can be easily missed.

Lamb Skewers were very delicious and comes with a peanut sauce and cucumbers to accompany it. It has a good amount of flavour, but it was a bit on the dry side.

Beef Skewer was similar to the lamb skewer. Since the rub on the outside was similar, it was sometimes a bit hard to tell the difference between the two types of skewers. Each type of meat has their distinct taste but its very subtle.

Vegetable Samosa comes with 6 pieces and a sweet green sauce. It’s not like the traditional samosa you would find at an Indian restaurant. It’s made with wonton wrappers. It still tasted good.

Beef Brisket Curry was very good as well. It’s best to order a side of rice to accompany this saucy dish. I would definitely order this again.

Curry Ox Tail Pot came in a large pot and is best shared amongst 2 or 3 people. The ox tail is very tender and the curry was slightly spicy. You can ask the to adjust the amount of spice to your dishes.

Paratha is pan-fried indian flatbread. It is in no way the same as naan. It didn’t taste very good with curry. I would probably just stick with rice instead.

Overall the food was great, but the service was very mediocre. They charged us for a dish that never arrived at the table and took a while to correct the issue on the bill. The curry and the skewers are good, but it’s not very authentic. It does have a Chinese twist to the dishes. If you come in here expecting 100% authentic Indian dishes, you will be very disappointed.

Foodology Disclaimer: VANEATS.ca approached me to try out their “Maurya’s Spice Dining Package”  and write a review about it. I got a complimentary dining package and brought along TenantGirl.

One of Dine Out Vancouver’s favourites, Maurya Indian Cuisine has won multiple diner’s choice awards over the years. A big fan of flavourful indian food, I was really excited to help DesignGirl with this review.

Dining Package details

Dining passes are currently available for $18 each which gives you 6 courses (http://vaneats.ca/mauryas-spice/):

  1. Garlic and Basil Naan, Indian leavened bread flavored with chopped garlic and basil
  2. Mixed greens & beets salad, lightly tossed with vinaigrette
  3. Seekh Kebab, minced lamb mixed with spices & skewed in charcoal oven
  4. Mixed Vegetables, seasoned and pan fried broccoli, bell peppers, green beans, zucchini
  5. Chicken Chettinad, Marinated chicken in South Indian chettinad paste of coconut and poppy seeds – 2009 Dine Out Vancouver Award Winner!
  6. Daal Maurya, Maurya’s Pride! Black lentils cooked overnight. A real accompaniment to an Indian meal

The Experience

On a Wednesday night, I picked up TenantGirl from school and headed over to Maurya’s. We decided to order one of the Vaneats.ca packages and order an additional dish, the Saag Gosht – Tender medallions of lamb tempered with cumin folded into our spinach curry sauce.

The only thing that wasn’t part of the package was the Saag Gosht (the greenish dish) and the rice. Ok, now let’s dig in:

Similar to getting bread before a meal, they first dropped us off some papadum that you can eat accompanied with mango chutney, Mint sauce, or Tamarind sauce. I enjoyed them all but my favourite was the tamarind sauce that had a light sweet and sour taste to it. It was interesting switching between the three and it was my first time having papadum. At first I thought that maybe it was some type of flat bread but imagine having a super thin pita chip.

Pictured here are the three appetizers that they served this included:

  1. Mixed greens & beets salad, lightly tossed with vinaigrette
  2. Seekh Kebab, minced lamb mixed with spices & skewed in charcoal oven
  3. Mixed Vegetables, seasoned and pan fried broccoli, bell peppers, green beans, zucchini

The salad was light, sweet, and perfectly dressed with a raspberry vinaigrette. The Seekh Kebab, I’d compare it to having hot pepperoni. I’d say that it was a bit on the dry side for me but definitely had balanced spices. TenantGirl said it was salty for her taste but I think that’s a part of this dish. The mixed vegetables had a nice butteriness to it and weren’t overcooked which is a pet peeve of mine. I wouldn’t say that either blew me away but it had great variety. For appetizers, next time I’d really like to try their Karawari Prawns on their regular menu.

Yum Yum Garlic Basil Naan! A staple to Indian cuisine, Maurya’s naan is a little different from most places because it gets added flavour from the garlic and basil. It was a flavourful, rustic and what a great way to enjoy the saucey dishes that follow. I have to admit though, there is a lot of garlic, so make sure you chew some gum after this meal. I swear i had the taste of garlic in my mouth hours after.

This is the Chicken Chettinad, Marinated chicken in South Indian chettinad paste of coconut and poppy seeds – 2009 Dine Out Vancouver Award Winner!

This dish was yum yum yum! It had a sweet spiciness to it, and almost sort of fruity. I could see why this dish was a winner. The white chicken meat was tender and flavourful with the sauce. Have it with your naan in there and you’re ready for more. I wouldn’t say that it was very spicy though. There was heat but it wouldn’t leave you reaching for water after just 1 or 2 bites. At first I didn’t taste the spice, but after a few more bites, the heat was noticeable (in a good way). I think that you can request it be the top level of spice.

This is the Daal Maurya, Maurya’s Pride! Black lentils cooked overnight. Again, you can eat this with your naan and I was amazed by how good this tasted. I’ve had Daal before but I haven’t had one that was as aromatic as this. Not that you could literally smell it when it arrived but once you take a bite, the subtle taste of the lentils fill your mouth and senses. If you’ve never had daal before, I guess you’d compare it to mashed peas but … so much better.

Saag Gosht – Tender medallions of lamb tempered with cumin folded into our spinach curry sauce. This was our addition of the night, but for two girls, we left the night with packed away  rice and maybe a third of the Chicken Chettinad and Saag Gosht.

We ordered this with a mild spiciness but I couldn’t really taste the spice much and perhaps I should have gone for medium. The taste might have been overpowered by the Chicken Chettinad we ate before starting this dish. I know it looks green and mushy but that’s the spinach curry sauce that actually turned out to taste very creamy because of the spinach. The lamb was not gamey and was not overcooked, so the meat was perfect. I know I ordered mild but I think I expected more of the spices to come forth. I might need to give medium a try but I’m not sure if I’d order this again.

Overall, if you’re buying this package expecting spicey heat that will leave you sweating, that’s not what you will expect. I think it’s suitable for both those who like spices/flavourful food as well as those who have more sensitive tongues.

If I had ordered the chicken chettinad on it’s own it would have cost $12.95 and with the added $4.95 to make a full dinner with rice, naan, and daal, it would have totalled to $18.00 as well. So for going with the deal, you don’t get the rice, but you do get the extra appetizers with it.  I wouldn’t say that their appetizers blew me away, but it’s nice to get your vegetables and have a bit more variety. I think if I had gotten the full meal with both rice and naan, I would have been wayyyy too stuffed.

Words of Wisdom

  • If you love/don’t love spice, make sure you mention whether you want mild/medium/hot.

Siddhartha’s Indian Kitchen is a new restaurant that opened up on commercial drive and specializes in healthy, sustainable, and delicious Indian food. Chef Siddharth Choudhary took over the former restaurant – Corner Tandoori in 2011 and reopened in early 2012. They commit to traditional gluten-free vegetarian preparations, vegan options and certified sustainable ingredients. When you taste their food, you will definitely be able to taste the difference!

I came down here with LinLin and LoiLoi to check out Siddhartha’s Indian Kitchen.

The interior is quite nice and the paintings are just breath-taking. I absolutely adore the amazing all the images on the interior and exterior. I came here at 6pm and the place slowly filled up as the night went on. I even bumped into 604Foodtography!

Housemade Chai Tea was ordered by LoiLoi. It reminded us of an Indian version of HK-Style Milk Tea. Of course it’s not the same, but same concept of mixing the sugar and milk into the tea. It was quite aromatic with subtle tastes of spices.

Mango Lassi is a mango and yogurt based drink. The drink was creamy and had a delicious mango taste, which I absolutely love. It is also topped off with a mango puree swirl on the top. The only thing that could be improved is the temperature, I would have liked it to be a bit colder. LoiLoi agreed too.

Lamb Shank comes with a large slow cooked piece of lamb. It is very tender and is cooked in the curry. It was highly recommended by the owner, so we decided to get it.

The accompanying sauce is as delicious as the meat. It was not very oily, which is nice because Indian food tends to be quite oily. Clearly their cooking techniques and ingredients shine through. It also comes with a choice of rice or naan.

We decided to choose the rice to go with the lamb shank since it works well with the sauce.

Saag Paneer is made with cheese and curried spinach. It wasn’t like the usual curries as it was more dense and thick. It is vegetarian and it very very delicious. It was our favorite dish of the night! You can tell they used a lot of spinach in the dish. Highly recommended! It also comes with rice or naan.

Garlic Naan is fresh tandoori baked naan with roasted garlic & butter on top. It was actually a perfect item to accompany the naan because you could slather a bunch of saag paneer and eat it. We did notice that the naan was a bit unevenly cooked, so one of our pieces were more burnt than the rest.

Overall, we did enjoy our main dishes and I just love the fact where its healthier and you can actually taste it…and it tastes better. Siddhartha’s Indian Kitchen is a great addition to Commercial Drive and their Saag Paneer is out of this world! The guys at VANEATS.ca have a dining package right now for $16 that showcases their other dishes.

King Mahal Restaurant is an Indian restaurant on Hastings Street in North Burnaby serving authentic Northern Indian cuisine.

The Heights Merchant Association is holding this 3-day event (April 24 – April 26, 2012) called “Crave” to showcase some of the restaurants in North Burnaby. Since I live in North Burnaby, I thought I would check out some places I would not normally go dine at. I have to admit, a few of these restaurants do not look very pretty on the outside, but $15 for a 3 course meal is a good price. Never judge a book by its cover!

The interior isn’t pretty at all. Fake flowers are quite tacky.

M and I got one of each appetizer. We were quite surprised that so much came.

Vegetable Pakora has fresh vegetables, potatoes, cauliflower, onions and spinach mixed with spices and graham flour, then deep-fried. I loved the pakora! It was crispy on the outside and had a fragrant taste on the inside.

Vegetable Samosa are crisp patties stuffed with potatoes, peas and dash of Indian spices, then its deep fried. I wasn’t very impressed by it since it was a bit flat and not as plump as some other places in town.

Butter Chicken has boneless chicken marinated in ginger, garlic, yogurt, vinegar and spices, made with fresh tomato sauce,
butter and cream. They give you the option of amount of spice – mild, medium or hot. M decided to get hot since he loves the extra kick in flavour and heat. It was little too spicy for my taste, but he loved it so much that it’s his new favorite butter chicken.

Rogan Josh Lamb is a specialty of Kesh, chunks of meat cooked in traditional spices with saffron. We got this very spicy as well. The flavours were good, but I still prefer the butter chicken.

With each entree, you get the choice between rice or naan. We just got both since we had 2 entrees.

Naan was a little bit thick, but still remained quite crispy, which I liked.

Rice Pudding (Kheer) is made with special rice and milk. It was good especially after eating the curry, it neutralizes the strong tastes.

Gulab Jamun is made with dry milk and cottage cheese balls, deep fried and dipped in sugar syrup. It was a bit too sweet for me since the sugar syrup did seep all the way into the ball.

At the end of the meal, you receive some Candied Fennel Seeds and toothpicks. In a way, you can say the fennel seeds are like mints that taste like licorice.

Overall, the food is pretty good, but the decor and exterior of the restaurant are just horrendous. If you love good affordable food and not care much about aesthetics, you should go here. In total, everything can out to be $35 after tax for M and I. We still packed half our meal to go too.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Very Affordable
  • Ability to choose level of spice
  • Daily Groupon Now deals ($19 and you get an appetizer and 2 entrees.)

Foodology Disclaimer: VANEATS.ca approached me to try out there “Palki” dinning package and write a review about it. I got a complementary package for myself and I brought along Abbytizer to keep the review as unbiased as I could. The review does not guarantee 100% similar service you might normally get from the restaurant.

Hello Internet! Abbytizer and I reviewed VANEATS latest dining package for “Palki Passion”. Palki serves up traditional Indian cuisine on Commercial Drive.

The dining package consist of a sample platter of various appetizers and main course meal.

Sample Platter consists of:

  • Vegetable Samosa”, spiced vegetables stuffed in a savoury pastry.
  • Lamb Barrah Kebob, rack of lamb marinated with garlic, ginger and spices.
  • Chicken Tikka”, tender piece of boneless chicken marinated with our special ingredients and grilled in the Tandoor.
  • “Tandoori Prawn, jumbo prawn marinated and cooked in the Tandoor
  • Murg Malai Tikka”, tender chicken marinated in sour cream and fresh spices from Tandoor.

Main Course consist of:

  • Butter Chicken”, boneless chicken first broiled in the Tandoor and then cooked in a butter and cream sauce.
  • Onion and Cilantro Naan”, Indian style onion and cilantro.

You can purchase the dinning package at VANEATS.ca for only $14 from April 11 to June 11, 2012.

The interior of the restaurant has a very nice modern look with Indian inspired decor. Upon walking into the restaurant, you are welcomed with the wonderful aroma of spices.

Lentil Wafer with Black Pepper Seeds. We found this mini appetizer to be delicious. The Lentil wafer is very crispy and after a while of eating, you definitely will taste the presence of the black pepper.

The sample platter comes on very hot sizzling hot plate.

Vegetable Samosa has spiced vegetables stuffed in a savoury pastry.
One samosa is cut into two halves. The samosa is well seasoned, is crispy and isn’t greasy like other samosas we’ve had.

Lamb Barrah Kebob is a rack of lamb marinated with garlic, ginger and spices then roasted in the Tandoor. The lamb was delicious. It was nicely grilled and juicy. The lamb does have a bit more spice compared to the other samplers.

Chicken Tikka has tender piece of boneless chicken marinated with Palki’s special ingredients and grilled in the Tandoor. Abbytizer enjoyed how juicy the chicken was. The tandoori seasoning was not overwhelming and the chicken had a nice char grilled flavour to them.

Tandoori Prawn has jumbo prawn marinated and cooked in the Tandoor. Abbytizer describes it to be perfectly cooked as the prawns were tender. The seasoning complemented the sweetness of the prawns.

Murg Malai Tikka has tender chicken marinated in sour cream and fresh spices from Tandoor. Abbytizer enjoyed the chicken, as it was moist and tasty. The grill and char on the chicken added to the overall flavour of this dish.

Along the side of the hot plate are grilled green bell peppers, which were delicious. The peppers have the taste of tandoori from the other dishes beside them.

Butter Chicken has boneless chicken first broiled in the Tandoor and then cooked in a butter and cream sauce. Abbytizer and I both agree that the butter chicken was delicious. Each piece of chicken was very tender. The sauce was delicious. Abbytizer thought that the sauce permeated the chicken so well. Palki’s butter chicken sauce is slightly different from other butter chicken sauces because it had a hint of sweet smokiness. The butter chicken was so delicious that Abbytizer cleaned out the serving dish with the onion and cilantro naan!

Onion and Cilantro Naan has Indian style onion and cilantro. Abbytizer describes it to be a great vehicle for carrying the butter chicken sauce. The naan was tasty in its own right, as it had onions and cilantro, which added little bursts of flavour with every bite.

Granvilla Island Pale Ale Beer ($3.75) The beer is quite refreshing on a sunny day.

The Peacock ($8.00) is made of kiwi, lime, lemon, blue curacao, melon liqueur and soda. Abbytizer describes to be a very refreshing cocktail. She enjoyed the sweetness of the kiwi and questioned if it truly was alcoholic! It was such a good drink she sipped on 2 Peacocks during our dining experience.

Spiked Mango Lassi ($6.75) is made up of mango, special yogurt with rum. Abbytizer describes it to be another great cocktail, especially if you like something that is creamy. The restaurant makes its own yogurt, which is used in this drink. They use fresh mango and mango pulp, and toss all the ingredients, including the rum, in a blender. The ends result is a fruity and enjoyable drink.

Mango Kulfi ($4.25) this is two scopes of rich Indian Mango Ice-cream. I found this dessert to be delicious; there is some sort of seasoning added to the ice cream, which gives it a chewy texture.

Gulab Jamon ($4.25) round sponge like cake in a honey syrup. Abbytizer describe it to be the dessert of choice, especially if you have a big sweet tooth like she does! The sponge cake balls were warm and soft. She especially enjoyed how they soaked up the honey syrup! The addition of toasted nuts gave the dessert a crunchy textural contrast.

Overall, Abbytizer and I both agree that the VANEATs dinning package of “Palki Passion” is worth the $14 dollars. The package is  a wonderful way for anyone to get introduced to Indian cuisine. The servers were very friendly and answered any curious questions we had about the dishes. Abbytizer intends to return to Palki when she craves Indian food. When redeeming your package at the restaurant you can choose the degree of heat, ranging from very mild, to very spicy.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Can choose level of heat

Palki Indian Restaurant is located on Commercial Drive and serves traditional Indian food. It’s a bit hard to find since it’s further up Commercial past the other popular restaurants.

I took AdventureTimeGirl and M here since we were way too lazy to drive elsewhere for Indian food. I’ve been here before and I thought the food was pretty solid. The interior is very nice and looks very different that the outside of the restaurant. The service is good too!

The Peacock is made of kiwi, lime, lemon, blue curacao, melon liqueur and soda. It was sweet and quite enjoyable with a good dominant flavour of the kiwi. I love kiwis.

Mango Lassi is a drink you should be ordering. It’s a yogurt based drink with mangoes.

Palki’s Mixed Platter ($11) has vegetable samosa, chicken pakora, and vegetable pakora. I love the chicken pakora and the vegetable pakora. It crispy on the outside and very savory on the inside.

The vegetable samosa was good, but since I’m not a fan of potatoes, I did not enjoy it as much as AdventureTimeGirl.

Saag Paneer ($11.50) has pureed spinach and paneer cooked with ground spices. The sauce was very smooth and had a good amount of delicious paneer. Even though it is vegetarian, it was delicious.

Butter Chicken ($11.50) has boneless chicken in a butter and cream sauce. It came a bit slower than the saag paneer, so they did provide this complementary. The sauce was quite delicious, but I did find that the chicken was a bit on the dry side. It’s a strange thing since the sauce is so delicious but the chicken just disappointed.

Garlic Naan ($3) has garlic and basil on top. Its good on its own, but with the curries we ordered, it overpowered the spices of the curry. Nonetheless, still good naan.

Lacchedar ($4) is a Multi-layered flaky bread with butter. I really enjoyed this! Good flavour from the butter that paired well with the curry!

Overall, I the food is pretty solid. Lot of choices on their menu and its a nice place to dine at with decent prices.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Large amount of curries and Naan
  • Best to stick with the original Naan or jasmine rice
  • Some parking available in the residential areas or pay parking in front
  • Good prices and good atmosphere
  • The Peacock and mango lassi for drinks!
  • Onion Bhajia, Chicken Pakora, veggie pakora and Kofta Dil Bahar are highly recommended

The Himalayan Peak at SFU sells Indian food. You can either do takeout or eat in. They are best known for their all-you-can-eat buffet since its the best bang for your buck if you eat a lot.

Since a few of us weren’t super super hungry, we decided to pick a few items off the menu for lunch to share.

There’s lots of tables available and its not too busy.

Butter Chicken ($14) has boneless pieces of chicken breast cooked in creamy sauce. The flavours were good, but it could have been a bit stronger.

It tasted good and its always best with an order of naan or rice. There was a good amount of chicken, but it is quite an expensive dish.

Naan ($2) is what we chose to get with the butter chicken. It was made fresh and really good!

Chicken Naan-wich ($7) has very little ingredients inside, but I guess thats to keep it from falling apart. Since the naan is also thin, it has good proportions. Too bad there really isn’t a binding agent to really keep it all together.

Thats what the center looked like.

Twin Peak Samosa ($5) has a crispy outer layer with potatoes and peas inside. You get 2 types of sauces too.

In the middle of the two samosas are a type of a bean curry. It went well with the samosas but the raw onions was a tad much.

Overall, it was a good food but certain item can be a bit expensive. Flavours are a bit mild to suit general people.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Regular items on the menu are quite pricey
  • All you can eat Buffet at noon is quite popular
  • Naan-wich is recommended or the paneer
  • No free parking anymore :(

Rasoee Indian Kitchen serves up modern Indian cuisine. In a way, you can say this is Indian fast food. This location is on Robson, but they do have a few other locations in Vancouver.

The interior has a few tables, but the turnover rate is quite high during lunch since its quick.

Butter Chicken Combo ($8.49 + $2.49) has tender tandoori-baked boneless chicken in a mildly spiced creamy tomato curry sauce with basmati rice.  With the combo I got a coke and naan bread.

The naan bread wasn’t good, I chose the original naan as recommended by the cashier. It didn’t feel very fresh and not very authentic. I wish there was a little cup of curry sauce to dunk the bread into since there isn’t enough sauce on top of the rice. The combo isn’t really worth it.

The butter chicken curry was alright, the sauce was a bit on the thin side and not a lot of chicken.

Lamb Curry ($8.49) is on basmati rice as well. MeatGirl thought it was also alright, but good for a quick lunch.

Overall, I feel this is what Indian Fast Food taste like. The curries were light, but nothing too special. It seems like the taste of the curry was just adapted towards Western culture and lost it’s authentic taste. I guess they are trying to target the general population.

However, they are always continually trying to improve their store, so perhaps it will get better. Their service is really good though! The food came really fast!

Foodology Disclaimer: I was invited by the owners to try out their restaurant. I brought along 3 friends to really keep this review as unbiased as possible! This review does not guarantee 100% similar service you might normally get from this restaurant.

Palki Indian Restaurant is located on Commercial Drive. Their first location has been running for the past 12 years in North Vancouver. In the past year, they opened up their second location on Commercial Drive. From the outside, it doesn’t look much, but they have some amazing Indian food. All their food is authentic and made by their skilled chefs from India.

At first, when I was walking by, this sign really doesn’t do this restaurant justice. I would probably keep on walking. They have plans to redo their exterior, so this will change in 2012.

The interior is very elegant and I was very impressed. There are 2 levels in the restaurant – one is the regular dining area and the 2nd is this funkier bar area.

Surprisingly, this place was packed for a Tuesday evening. Even though there is not a lot of online presence by the restaurant, they have an amazing amount of loyal customers that keep coming back.

Mango Lassi is a drink you should be ordering. It’s a yogurt based drink with mangoes. I’ve always loved drinking mango lassi and this one was good. It’s non-alcoholic so it’s perfect for kids and adults. They also have an alcoholic version on their menu too if you felt like boozing it up.

If you plan on ordering spicy food, I find it a good drink to cut the spice because of its creamy texture.

The Peacock is made of kiwi, lime, lemon, blue curacao, melon liqueur and soda. It was nice and fruity and not too alcoholic. Everyone was eyeing Gmoney’s drink since it did look pretty cool.

Goa Sunrise contains mango, ginger, white rum with malibu and grenadine. J thought it was good, but she still preferred the Peacock since it was more fruity.

KingFisher Beer is a beer from India. It has a very light crisp taste.

Onion Bhajia is deep fried battered onion. The batter is bright red, but it is in no way spicy at all. The color is all natural and gets it’s red color from the paprika. J loved this dish and couldn’t get enough. The onion is nice and savory with it’s crunch batter.

Chicken Pakora was mixed in there as well. It’s a deep fried battered boneless chicken with Indian spices. It has the same bright red exterior. I liked it! The chicken was juicy and well flavoured.

These two items were probably my favorite appetizers.

Vegetable Pakora is deep fried fritters of garden fresh vegetables. It was alright, but it didn’t suit my tastes.

Vegetable Samosa has spiced vegetables stuffed in a savoury pastry. The filling was mostly potatoes and Im not a huge fan of starchy foods.

The appetizers come with two sauces –  cilantro mint sauce and a tamarind sauce. I liked the cilantro mint sauce because of its strong pungent flavours. I just loved dunking the appetizers in it! The tamarind sauce was alright, but I preferred the other sauce.

Curried Mussels ($11.95) has mussels cooked in a curry sauce. There was lots of sauce to accompany the mussels, but I felt the mussels could be a bit more plump. You do get a lot of sauce left over, so it might be good to grab some naan for it.

Butter Chicken ($11.50) has boneless chicken in a butter and cream sauce. This is their most popular dish! 50% of the curries they serve is this dish. It’s probably because it’s a fairly common dish.

The curry tasted really good and even though it’s not very large, when you order rice or naan with it, you will get full.

Lamb Vindaloo ($11.95) has boneless lamb with garlic, ginger, vinegar, potatoes and some Indian spices.

It another one of their popular items, but I wasn’t a big fan of the lamb. They also have a beef version too, so that might be good.

Kofta Dil Bahar ($10.95) has minced paneer–  Indian fresh cream cheese and mixed vegetable balls stuffed with dry fruits and served in a mild cream sauce.

I loved this dish even though it’s vegetarian. It’s not spicy and has a good flavour to it.

Tandoori Naan ($1.85) should be ordered with the curries. Perfect for dipping into it.

More Tandoori Naan.

Onion and Cilantro Naan ($3) was very colorful and seemed like pizza instead of naan. I’ve never had anything like this. Good, but when you have this with the curry, it  doesn’t let the flavour of the curry shine through.

Spinach And Paneer Naan ($4) is stuffed bread with homemade cheese and spinach. I’ve never experienced anything similar to this. It’s quite unique, but it still doesn’t taste that great alone. It still tastes better with the curries.

Pulao ($3) is basmati rice . It’s a good chice to accompany your curry.

Im probably more of a traditionalist, so I would prefer the original naan and the basmati rice to accompany the curries. This is not to say the other naan arn’t good, I just like the original simple stuff.

Overall, I think it’s a great addition to the Drive! Lot of choices on their menu and its a nice place to dine at with affordable prices.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Large amount of curries and Naan
  • Best to stick with the original Naan
  • Some parking available in the residential areas or pay parking in front
  • Good prices and good atmosphere
  • Onion Bhajia, Chicken Pakora, Butter Chicken and Kofta Dil Bahar are highly recommended

I was randomly looking for a new Food Cart to eat at during my lunch break. I stumbled upon NaanWraps on Burrard. They operate on limited days, so you can’t always find them downtown.

Just look out for the large green truck and you know you have arrived here.

As the name of their truck suggests, they specialize in Tandoori Naanwraps. Their menu is quite limited and they tend to sell out of a few items.

Mango Lassi ($3.49) has yogurt, mango, and 2% milk. It’s a good refreshing drink for a hot afternoon. I love mangoes! They make them ahead of time, so you don’t need to wait for your drink.

Tanoori NaanWrap ($6.48) has tandoori chicken, bell peppers, onions, rice and mint sauce wrapped in Naan.

The wrap was larger than I expected and was definitely worth the money!  The chicken was moist and the mint sauce was subtle and not too overpowering. All the ingredients worked well with each other and I had no complaints. I was super stuffed and walked back to the office happy.

Overall, good value for what you get!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Under $10
  • Credit, Debt, Cash
  • Tandoori NaanWrap is a must!

Being on the SFU Burnaby Campus once a week still gives me plenty of time to check out their food. There really isn’t too much variety, but one of the better restaurants is the Himalayan Peak. They serve up Indian food!

There’s plenty of space for large groups or just a small bunch. They also take reservations. I would always go here with my coworkers for the all-you-can-eat buffets during lunch. Always a good deal for buffet.

Fabo and I ended class and headed here for their Naan-wich. I had it a long long time ago and I remembered it was a pretty strange concept.

When we sat down at the table, we instantly saw a little sign about the naan-wich. I read “A New Era in Sandwich Technology”, I thought it was a super weird tagline for the sandwich. I mean, how revolutionary can this be? Or do they just have horrible marketing?

The naan-wich comes in 2 choices chicken or vegetarian for $7. Since Fabo and I were meat eaters, we both had the chicken naan-wich.

The naan-wich was cut up into 4 quarters and resembled a quesadilla. I found that this was quite messy to eat since one of the naan breads would want to fall off as the other ingredients tried to slide off the other half. They really needed more stickiness on one side to stay adhered them together.

Fabo and I had different strategies of eating this and I just adopted the pizza way of eating this. You will need napkins. Even though this is so, the flavours were pretty good and naan is just so good! I really love naan bread!

The few days later, I was having lunch Downtown with my supervisor and she was taking about the “naan sandwich” at SFU, so I whipped out my camera and showed her. We thought it was a bit funny how it was such a coincidence that I had the photo on my phone.

When you pay your bill at the counter, you will find this strange bowl of candy with a spoon. It is Candied Fennel Seeds. It is very crunchy and tastes like anise or licorice. It refreshes your pallet after the meal!

Overall, it was a good snack and I really love the unique concept.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Regular items on the menu are quite pricey
  • All you can eat Buffet at noon is quite popular
  • Naan-wich is recommended or the paneer
  • No free parking anymore 🙁
  • SFU Student? Free Parking at UniverCity (they don’t check the 2 hr limit)

In the Academic Quadrangle at Simon Fraser University, there is a branch of Renaissance Coffee that sells the usual items plus butter chicken! I always see my past coworkers eating it, so I thought to myself, if everyone else is eating, I should try it as well!

Sure enough I tried it with Fabo during lunch.

The butter chicken comes with basmati rice, the butter chicken, side of lettuce and cucumbers. For the price of about $6, it’s not too bad for a lunch on campus.

Since all the sauce is on top, it’s best to stir all the sauce and rice together so it is evenly distributed. I did this and I didn’t have too much issue with the sauce/rice ratio. I also didn’t mix the rice under the salad.

Fabo didn’t mix her sauce and rice, so she really needed more sauce with hers. We also felt that the butter chicken could have had more chicken as well. Chicken was a bit overcooked, tough and dry.

I also got a London Fog. Probably one of my favorite places to get it at campus.

Overall, it was not bad for campus food. KoreanGirl also had it the other day and she thought it was good, but it was not something she would get over and over again. You do get full from this, so it’s a good thing.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Long line ups during peak times
  • Butter chicken at AQ Location
  • Panini’s & soups at Cornerstone Location
  • Usually the greek salad, pasta salad, wraps and yogurt are good choices for quick eats

Vij’s serves indian infused fusion food. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this place and I thought it was time I try it.

Since I gave away my Blackberry to TaipeiGirl, she took me and TaiwaneseGirl out for dinner. I was super happy because well…Vij is quite pricey.

We just missed the first sitting at the restaurant and had to wait in the back of the restaurant near the bar. We were about the 3rd party waiting and we were told we would have to wait 1hr to 1.5 hrs. Since they do not take reservations, we just waited. It was probably one of the best waiting experiences I have ever had! Nice atmosphere and there were even chairs and tables to have a small conversation.

Before we knew it, the waiting area filled up. This was at least better than waiting outside in the cold. Vij knows how to treat their loyal customers.

As we were waiting, the waitress passed around some samples of different foods that they had. In total they had about 4 variations of samples. They had strange names so I don’t remember most of them. None of them were bad at all! We probably ate everything twice while we were waiting, but still we were happy.

After about 1 hour of waiting, a table cleared up. The lighting was really nice and not too dim. The lamps even add a little something something to the ambiance.

The menu was pretty text heavy…and as a graphic designer… they could have formatted the menu a bit better. They do have a variety of different appies and entrees.

Our water came with a refillable jug on the table. It looked pretty cool so I snapped a picture. It looks like it could be an artifact of some sort. Perhaps I am strange and like things that I would not see in everyday life.

We started with the Samosas ($13). They are filled with lamb and beef sauteed in fennel, cloves and sumac. It also came with naan bread. TaipeiGirl did not take a liking to it since she does not have a high tolerance for the taste of lamb. TaiwaneseGirl didn’t really like lamb but she tried it anyways. We both enjoyed it and the sauce went really well with the samosa.

TaiwaneseGirl ordered the grilled salmon ($28). It came with a coconut and green onion curry. We all came to a consensus that the salmon tasted a bit different that what we would like it to be. It tasted like grilled skin.  On the other hand, the Coconut and green onion curry was fantastic!

TaipeiGirl ordered the Braised Beef short ribs ($27). It is braised in yogurt, fenugreek and cumin curry. This was really good. The meat was really tender and most enjoyable!

I ordered the wine marinated lamb popsicles ($27)in fenugreek curry on turmeric and spinach potatoes. This is the most ordered item at Vij’s and you can’t go wrong with this dish…unless you hate lamb. The lamb is succulent and tender! I would eat this every single time if I could.

Our entrees came with Naan bread and rice to go with our curry sauces. We got full really fast due to all the naan. Naan is so good!

Overall we had a positive experience, but I think Vij’s was too hyped up from friends so we kinda had very high expectations for it. If you compare Vij’s to other indian cuisine places, you can tell Vij’s uses really fresh high quality ingredients.

Words of Wisdom:

  • No reservations
  • Long line ups, unless you go before 5:30pm to line up
  • Lamb Popsicles and Beef Short Ribs are a must!!
  • This is not your everyday Indian Fusion restaurant… expect to pay around $30 – $45
