kazu-bar

Kazu Japanese Restaurant opened in 2014 and they are serving delicious sushi in North Burnaby. It’s on Madison and Hastings to be exact. M and I were looking for dinner after work and decided to pop in here.

There have been a bunch of Japanese Restaurants opening on Hastings like wild fire, but none of them are really good until now. Kazu Japanese Restaurant is run by really nice and friendly people and the food is just back to the basics yum. Japanese owned too!

kazu-inner

Their menu is quite limited and you will find the usual items on the menu, but they make it right. Simple but so delicious.

kazu-sashimi

Tuna and Salmon Sashimi ($7.25) came in small pieces but the quality was definitely there. M just loved this and couldn’t stop eating it.

kazu-toro-nigiri

Toro Nigiri ($2 each) is one of our favourite items to order and the quality again was very good! Delicious and fatty. M put this into his mouth and instantly started smiling because it was so good.

kazu-unagi-nigiri

Unagi Nigiri ($2.75) is BBQ eel on top of rice. Really delicious too!

kazu-chicken-karaage

Chicken Karaage ($5.50) was simple and delicious served with a slice of lemon. It is deep-fried boneless chicken.

kazu-gyoza

Gyozas ($3.75) comes with 5 pieces and they are pork and veggie dumplings.

kazu-nigiri

Special Scallop Roll with Tobiko ($4.50) also has mayo, masago and cucumbers.

Tamago Nigiri ($1.25) was delicious according to M.

kazu-tuna-tataki

Tuna Tataki ($9.50) comes with 7 pieces. The tuna is lightly seared on the outside and dressed with ponzu sauce, shiso leaves, and sprouts. Very delicious.

kazu-sign

Overall, M and I enjoyed our experience at Kazu Japanese restaurant. It’s getting quite popular, so try to make it here early or on a weekday. The food is back to the basics simple and tastes authentic. Staff are really friendly too.

white-spot-brunch-menu

Sometimes you want brunch, but you don’t need to go to a fancy place. Our closest restaurant that offers brunch is White Spot. Sometimes we get really lazy and don’t want to travel far. It’s never occurred to me to go to White Spot for brunch, but when we went, it was packed!

It’s a good place for families especially if you have kids.

white-spot-benny

Classic Benedict has English muffin topped with back bacon, two poached eggs & hollandaise. It is served with smashbrown potatoes. The smashbrowns were good, especially the pieces with crispy skin. The bennies were pretty basic.

white-spot-egg

I always get sad if a restaurant makes my eggs wrong, it always should be soft or medium poached eggs. The true way of an eggs benny.

white-spot-burrito

Santa Fe Breakfast Burrito has chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cheese, sautéed tomatoes and green peppers wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla. Served with our trio of sauces – avocado salsa, tomato salsa, cilantro sour cream and red nugget Smashbrowns. I really enjoyed the burrito it was hearty and everything in the burrito tasted great for brunch.

Overall, M and I had a good time at White Spot, but the service was quite slow for some reason. The manager apologized to our table and a few others and offered complimentary dessert. It was a nice touch, but M and I were too full, so we took the dessert home.

rolling-dough-outer

The Rolling Dough is a new pizza place in North Burnaby, which opened on August 2014. I often go to Gaya Sushi next door, so I was quite curious to try this place out when it opened. M and I came here to grab takeout for lunch as we noticed they had a few promotional deals going on. We ordered 2 medium pizzas and it took about 20 minutes to be completed. We called ahead of time so we didn’t have to wait.

rolling-dough-oven

Inside the store is their large stone pizza oven that they use to make all their pizza.

rolling-dough-stove

Making lots of pizza all day everyday, except on Sundays.

rolling-dough-counter

They have 3 sizes of pizzas – 8″, 12″ and 14″. They roll our their dough everyday and try to use local produce where possible. Nothing is frozen or premade.

rolling-dough-seats

There are a few seats inside and outside, but most people do takeout.

rolling-dough-box

M and I did a pick up order since we wanted to eat it at home. Too bad they don’t deliver.

rolling-dough-chicken

The Rolling Dough Chicken (12″ – $18) has roasted chicken breast, monterey jack cheese, salsa verde, cilantro, and Feta Cheese on the thin crust.

rolling-dough-meat-lovers

Meat Lovers (12″ – $17.50) comes with ham, pepperoni and spicy Italian sausage on top of the thin crust.

rolling-dough-thin-c

Both pizzas were quite thin and did stay crispy after we took it home.

rolling-dough-thin

The toppings held together nicely and did not fall apart.

rolling-dough-slices

Taking a few bites of each pizza, it’s very different from Panago or Dominos.  It’s much thinner crust and not as oily. The pizzas were average, but didn’t feel like they were worth the price because of their thin crust and you won’t get as full. Do keep an eye out for promos on their website as they do have some good deals. When we got 2 medium pizzas, the second one was 30% off.

If you are looking for a late night pizza joint, their hours are short and only open till 9pm.

Clancys-outer

Clancy’s Meat Co. is located in the Kensington Plaza in North Burnaby. M and I are always disappointed when going to Safeway a few doors down for meat. So, we decided to go see what Clancy’s Meat Co had to offer. Imagine it like M&M Meat Shop but different. They sell fresh and frozen meat products, and ready-to-eat meals in stores. Everything is organic and preservative-free.

There’s no butcher shop close to our place that opens after 6pm, so it’s hard to find good meat products after work.

clancys-inner

The store has a simple layout with the fresh item in the counters and the frozen stuff in the fridges.

Clancys-steak

A lot of the steaks are pre-marinated, so you don’t have to do any of the thinking at home. They do have a few selections than are left unseasoned.

Clancys-chicken

Same thing with the chicken breasts. You will find a lot of different flavours. My favourite is the Out of Control chicken breast, which is the yellow one in the photo.

Clancys-mushroom

One of our favourite items are the stuffed mushrooms. So good.

Clancys-fish

Clancys-frozen-fish

The rest of the food and a majority of the seafood products are frozen. I guess if you are looking for a quick dinner with little preparation, this might be for you.

Clancys-shelf

They also sell sauce to go with the meal.

Clancys-two

Two Can Dine ($19.99) comes with 2 sirloin steals, 2 shrimp skewers, 2 stuffed mushroom caps and 2 stuffed potatoes. Since it’s just M and I , we thought it would be good to give it a try.

All the items come with cooking instructions. You can find it online or get the staff to let you know the best way to prepare the items.

Clancys-potato

The stuffed potatoes are all frozen. There are many flavours to choose from but we got the Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Potato and the Parm, Herb and Garlic Stuffed Potatoes. We stuck them into the oven at 350’F for 50 minutes.

Clancys-two-dine

Voila, dinner is served. We made a simple salad just to add some more vegetables to the meal. The baked potatoes were surprisingly good, mushrooms were so good, steak was tender and full of flavour. The shrimp was ok, but not the best.

Clancys-two-two

It was an easily meal to make since most of the items we just threw into the oven. It’s kinda like a full proof plan if you don’t know how to cook.

Clancys-greek

We do go to Clancy’s quite often because it’s convenient and still cheaper than eating out. On another night we got Greek marinated Chicken Breast ($3.98) and a bacon wrapped chicken breast with asparagus, ham and cheese.

Clancys-protein

‘Out of Control’ marinated Chicken Breast ($3.98) and a bacon wrapped chicken breast with asparagus ham and cheese.

Surprisingly, the marinade was not spicy at all.

Clancys-mushrooms-steak

3 Pepper New York Steak ($4.98) and a few of the stuffed mushrooms ($1.98 each). The best stuffed mushroom is the Thermador Stuffed mushroom has the white mushroom caps are stuffed with lobster, cream cheese and some spices.

clancys-fishchick

Another time we got the stuffed Zuchinni, Out of Control Chicken Breast and the tilapia stuffed with lobster and cream cheese.

Overall, it’s a decent place to go if you want something easy to make for dinner. For M and I, this a quick meal to create after work. The shop is convenient and the prices are reasonable. I just wish there were more variety of fresh items.

blossom-teas-outer

There’s a new cafe in town! North Burnaby finally has another cafe that offers bubble tea and desserts. It’s right beside Mountain Shadow Pub. Years ago, this used to be a parking lots, but they have since built town homes and retail spaces.

Blossom Teas opened last year and they serve up Chinese style desserts. It’s quite unexpected here, but it’s a nice surprise because you would never expect this place to be here.

blossom-teas-inner

The interior is a bit small, so there really isn’t a lot of space for large groups. I did notice a lot of people were doing take out.

blossom-teas-menu

This is the drink menu and they have hot drinks, cold drinks, coffee, tea, etc.

blossom-teas-menu2

Here are a few more dessert items. There’s a lot more, but I didn’t take photos of.

blossom-teas-darts

A cool feature is the darts area! Imagine sipping on bubble tea and watching your friend duke it out at darts.

blossom-teas-cheesecake

New York style Cheesecake with a berry compote ($4.99) has the graham cracker crust with the cheesecake filling. Delicious and smooth.

blossom-teas-flan

Egg Pudding ($1.90) comes in a small container, but it was just the right amount.

blossom-teas-greentea

Matcha Shake with mochi ($5.50) was quite large! The mochi on top was very soft. Pretty good matcha shake.

blossom-teas-mango

Large Super Mango Shaved Ice ($7.85) tasted pretty average. The mango chunks were room temperature, so it really clashed with the temperature of this dish since the shaved ice and ice cream were really cold.

blossom-teas-toast

Condensed Milk Toast ($5) was dripping with condensed milk and also came with more condensed milk on the side. It tasted ok.

Overall, pretty good desserts, bubble tea and snacks. My family just shared all of this. It’s always better to share to try a bit of everything.

the-keg-inner

M and I have a ritual of going The Keg on our anniversary. It started a few years ago when we opted to go to The Keg rather than Gothams. The Burnaby location is our favourite as it is closest to our house, but driving there is always a pain because you can only get there by going northbound on Willingdon.

the-keg-bread

Complimentary bread arrived and they have a different type of bread now. It used to be more round and soft. Now it’s a bit harder and square in shape. Still tastes good with the whipped butter.

the-keg-filet-mignon

Filet Mignon (7oz – $32 | 10oz – $37) has the tenderloin wrapped in applewood smoked bacon. You get your choice to a side and he chose roasted vegetables. It is very tender! M got his medium rare and it was spot on.

He always gets this now because it’s really flavourful and the perfect cut of meat for a man.

the-keg-prime-rib

Prime Rib (10oz – $25) is aged for extra flavour and tenderness, rubbed with our unique blend of spices and slow roasted. Hand-carved and served with horseradish and red wine herb au jus. For my side, I ordered roasted vegetables as well.

Overall, it’s a pretty solid place to go for steaks without breaking the bank. The quality is consistent.

Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni pizza

Panago Pizza recently introduced their new Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza. As Panago pizza is very close to our place, M decided to order some for lunch. Best lazy meal ever. We both love spicy food, so we really wanted to see if it would really set our taste buds on fire. The basic pepperoni pizza is awesome and you can’t go wrong. When you add a bit of spice into the picture, it should taste good.

Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni pizza

We ordered a Large Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza for $15. It is made of Italian tomato sauce, spicy pepperoni, and mozzarella. There’s so much pepperoni that you can’t even see the pepperoni slices underneath.

It wasn’t very spicy and had a bit of a spicy tingle. If you want some extra spice to it, add some tabasco sauce or Franks Red Hots sauce.

CHICKEN GARDEN SALAD

To balance out the greasy pizza, I ordered the Chicken Garden Salad that comes with grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, green peppers, grape tomatoes, and red onions. It comes with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The salad was alright. The chicken pieces tasted ok, but it wasn’t great.

Overall, the Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza is a good item to order when people are over.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie is located on Hastings Street in North Burnaby. It’s pretty awesome to see that The Heights is starting to get some amazing shops in the area. Over the past few years, I’ve always complained about how few dessert places we have. My go-to place was always Cumpari’s on North Road.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

The interior of Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie is quite small with a few high tables near the windows. Not a great place for large groups, but it s a nice quiet setting for a few friends to catch up over some cakes.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

M was intrigued by all the chocolate, so he decided to get one of each.  I think he didn’t know which ones to choose, so he got them all. Each piece is $1.40 and is a bit pricey, but they look very pretty.

  • Noix de Coco et Passion
  • Praline Amande
  • Citron et Thym
  • Pistachie
  • Mango
  • Gianduja Dark
  • Tanka Amande
  • Kalamansi Framboise
  • Noix de Coco
  • Caramel
  • Gianduja Milk
  • 70% Ganache

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

He ate them all quite quickly. All those in one sitting. He didn’t even leave me a piece. He said they were pretty awesome.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

Besides chocolate they also have a variety of cakes and tarts. We came near the end of the day so most of the goodies were gone. All their treats looked quite cute.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

Trio de Chocolate ($4.50) has layers of dark, milk and white chocolate mousse. It’s quite small and it can be easily gobbled up in a few bites, but did taste pretty good.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

Box of Macarons ($9.95) comes with 6 flavours. The different flavours that they had were caramel, chocolate, coconut, lime basil, limoncello, maple syrup, passion fruit and pistachio. I have no idea which flavours were in the box since I got it as a gift for MedicalGiraffe. She did say they were tasty.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

They also have bars of chocolates too.

Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie

It’s a nice change to have such a delectable pastry shop in the area. If you are passing by this area, definitely stop and go inside. Parking is a little bit tricky but there should be some on Beta Street.

Chad Thai

Chad Thai Restaurant is located in North Burnaby on Hastings street. M and I were looking for some place to eat on Hastings and when we passed by, we began craving Thai food. Since we don’t have Thai food that often, we thought we would give it a try.

The interior isn’t large, so there is limited seating. We came at around 2pm, so there was plenty of seats available. The service was nice and friendly.

Chad Thai

They are the winners of the best Thai restaurant according to the readers of the Burnaby Now.

Chad Thai

Their lunch menu comes with complementary appetizers. There were fried wontons and a salad. We weren’t expecting this but it was definitely a nice start to the meal. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was delicious.

Chad Thai

Khao Soi Gai ($10.99) has egg noodles with sliced chicken breast in curry sauce, topped with crispy egg noodles, green beans and coriander. It is served with red onions, lime and chili oil on the side.

The portion wasn’t too large, but it was a decent size for lunch. It had a lot of intricate flavours and we were not disappointed at all.

Chad Thai

Khao Moo Kratiem Kai dao ($9.99) has stir fried of pork, ground garlic on rice with a fried egg. It was simple, but it was really good.

Overall, the food was pretty good and worth the price. M and I loved it and would come back again. I am not an expert at Thai food, but all I know is that the flavours tasted great.

Yo Sushi

Since Yo Sushi opened up on Hastings, I was always curious to see how their sushi would be. It resides in the old Bombay Behl. It is completely different inside and has lots of booth seating. The first thing I noticed when I went inside was a foosball table and a mini air hockey table. Pretty cool to have if you’re young at heart or dining with kids.

I came with M on a weekday night and this place was completely empty. There were a few takeout orders but besides that, we basically had the restaurant to ourselves, I had a feeling something wasn’t right. Yo Sushi was voted by Burnaby Now as the best sushi restaurant in Burnaby, but its something I have to strongly disagree with.

Yo Sushi

We sat down they gave us tea. When we proceeded to order our food, we asked the waitress what was something good on the menu that we must try. She told us that she hasn’t tried anything on the menu. This seemed a bit odd, so I rephrased to as her what is popular on the menu.

Yo Sushi

Red Dragon Roll ($9.95) has prawn tempura, crab meat, cucumber, and then it’s topped with spicy tuna, bread crumbs, and a spicy sauce. The roll had way too much sauce. It really drowned out most of the taste of the roll. The roll itself was poorly put together and the temperature was very strange. The roll and the spicy tuna on top were slightly warm.

Yo Sushi

Hawaiian Passion Roll ($9.95) has pineapple, avocado, and mango wrapped in soy bean paper. It sounded unique and we thought it would be an adventurous roll to order. We were very wrong. In short, fruit should not be in sushi.

Yo Sushi

Sweetheart Roll ($11.95) has cucumber, prawn, and tuna wrapped with salmon. It is also topped off with a maraschino cherry. Cute concept but it was nasty. All the raw items were slightly warm and it was a very basic roll that has been shaped into a heart. Not worth the price.

Yo Sushi

Magic Sushi Pizza ($10.95) has crispy rice on the bottom topped with onions, crab meat, scallops, tuna, salmon, and tai with a special sauce. It looked beautiful when it came out, but the crispy rice on the bottom was more stale and hard as a rock. The sashimi on top was also slightly warm.

By this point of the meal, we were pretty disappointed. Having spent $49.45 on these 4 items that were well below average. The service was sparse even though we were the only customers. The staff mostly congregated near the sushi chefs to chat. There is definitely lots of opportunity for the restaurant to grow, but the quality wasn’t there.

Hakkaku Ramen

I’ve passed by this place for about a year and a half, so I thought it was about time I try this place out. A friend of ours told us it had great ramen, so M really wanted to try it out. There really isn’t any other close ramen shops in the area, so we wanted to give Hakkaku Ramen a shot.

It’s located near Hastings and Willingdon in North Burnaby. There’s a lot of new restaurants popping up in this area.

Hakkaku Ramen

As the bus stops right outside, there is a good flow of customers eating here.

Hakkaku Ramen

Chashu Burger with a steamed bun ($3.95). It’s quite a fluffy bun and I chose to have the fatty pork belly meat instead of lean shoulder meat. Everything is a bit more delicious when its fatter. The bun was very thick, but it was very hard to hold and keep together when you bite into it. The burger was ok, but not worth $4.

Hakkaku Ramen

Miso Ramen ($7.95) has chashu, bean sprouts, onions, corn, green onion, seaweed and bamboo shoots. You can choose from a regular or rich broth and type of chashu (fatty or lean). Scarface chose to have his rich broth and lean chashu. THe broth is rich and flavourful.

Hakkaku Ramen

Shio Ramen ($7.45) has chashu, bean sprouts, onions, corn, green onion, boiled egg and bamboo shoots. M ordered is ramen with Rich broth and fatty chashu. The soup is smooth and light.

Hakkaku Ramen

Hot Miso Ramen ($8.25) has chashu, bean sprouts, onion, corn, bamboo shoots, green onions, boiled egg, and spicy garlic. I got the rich broth and fatty chashu. I felt this was too oily as I got the most fatty options. The broth could have had a bit more depth.

Overall, the ramen here was ok for the price. It’s not the best ramen in town, but the closest one in North Burnaby. The portions are large, so you will get full.

Another late night meal at Anton’s Pasta. There’s not too many late night places in this area. M and I like to come here for the amount food. Rawr we’re monsters. We have never finished a whole plate nor would be ever try. We usually eat part of it and then save leftovers for breakfast and lunch….and sometimes dinner.

Anton's Pasta

It’s usually busy, but we come pretty late around 9pm. There’s still lots of people inside but at least there are no line ups out the door.

Anton's Pasta

Complementary Bread arrives at the table as you wait for your dish. When you’re super hungry, you’ll probably eat a fair amount of bread, but it definitely fills you up before your pasta arrives. I usually just nibble on the bread and just wait till the pasta arrives.

Anton's Pasta

Spinach Tortellini Napoletana ($16.95) contains spinach tortellini stuffed with ricotta cheese in a fresh basil tomato sauce. It was the first time I ordered stuffed pasta and it was alright. The sauce isn’t as addictive as their specialty pastas. There was a lot of tortellini, but I kinda prefer their other pastas.

Anton's Pasta

Tondi Don Vincenzo ($16.95) has romano cheese & garlic stuffed pasta in a cream garlic parsley sauce with diced onions. The creamy garlic sauce was good!

Overall, the stuffed pasta is definitely different that their speciality pastas. Yet again, it’s not the best pasta, but its alright. People come here for the large quantities.

  • Long line ups during peak hours
  • Large variety of pastas

Foodology Disclaimer: No 1 Chinese Restaurant invited me to try their dishes. I brought along 5 of my friends to keep the review as unbiased as I could. All dishes you see reflect what you would receive on a regular dining experience.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

No 1 Chinese Restaurant is located on Hastings and Willingdon and they serve Chinese food. The Chef is John Mok and he has spent 30 years as a chef in Hong Kong, USA, China, and Vancouver. I’ve always passed by the restaurant on my way home from Downtown, but never really thought too much about it. It’s a family run restaurant and they put their heart and soul into their food.

When they approached me to try out their restaurant, I told me trusted buddies – M, Scarface, KoreanGirl, Cruzpresso, and RunningMan to join me.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

The interior is a bit confusing as it still has the murals from the previous restaurant that occupied the space. Nonetheless, it’s really all about the food and they do have good food here.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Hot and Sour Soup (Small $5.50 | Large $9.95) was pretty good! It’s my favorite soup to order when I’m at a Chinese Restaurant. We gobbled it all up!

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Deep Fried Tofu with Golden Garlic ($8.50) holy crap, the most amazing thing I’ve eaten in a long time! The outside is crunchy and the inside is soft tofu. It’s SO good. It looks very simple, but is so addictive. Go order this and you will know what I’m talking about. Everyone at the table thought this was the best item we ordered.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Sweet and Sour Boneless Pork ($10) was decent, still better than some other places in town. The batter wasn’t too thick, so you get a good amount of meat.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Beef Brisket with Curry Sauce ($11.95) had lots of tender beef, potatoes, onions and green peppers. This is one of their popular dishes. I would definitely order this again!

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

You can order rice to go with your curry. It comes in this cute little container. It reminded me of an elementary school lunch box.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

House Special Chow Mein ($9.50) was loaded with a bit of everything. There was so much stuff packed on top, I lost count of what was on it.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

BBQ Duck came with a good amount of pieces and was good as well.

No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Overall, some of the dishes were amazing. Definitely order the Beef Brisket Curry and the deep fried tofu. Since I grew up on Chinese food, generally not a lot of dishes stand out to me, but those 2 dishes are SO GOOD. They also have some pretty cheap lunch specials.

Bagel Street Cafe

A time before I started blogging, there would be one place I would go all the time. There was a small little cafe in the Kensington Plaza called Bagel Street Cafe. It is the place to get breakfast bagels in Burnaby. It is owned by a husband and wife and they have operated this cafe for way over ten years.

Bagel Street Cafe

Every time you order a bagel, they always ask “mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper”. I giggle a little bit every time I hear them say this because its like an automated response. The owners can sometimes be grouchy, but are generally nice.

Bagel Street Cafe

I ordered the egg florentine bagel on the everything bagel ($4.95). It’s a very simple bagel sandwich but they make it really good! You have the egg with the spinach, tomatoes, and spread.

Overall, the bagel sandwiches are great and not expensive at Bagel Street Cafe. They have a lot of different bagels too.

The interior is very beautiful and can seat lots of people. Our server Michael was very nice and helped us make some decisions.

EBO

Complementary Bread arrived at the table and there were 3 different varieties, which was great.

EBO

Wild Mushroom Soup has Mushroom Terrine, Truffled Brioche Coal, and Feta. I know the picture isn’t appetizing, but this soup is SO AMAZING. It was a good portion and if I could die in a pool full of this soup, I would be so happy. Definitely recommended!!!

EBO

Tuna is encrusted in a crisp rice crust, with Dungeness Crab, Avocado Puree, Compressed Watermelon on the plate. The portion was definitely way smaller than the soup. M thought this dish was ok, but preferred the wild mushroom soup instead.

EBO

Roasted Duck Confit is has curried butternut squash puree, white bean stew, and maple gel. It was very tender and had a crisp skin, but the duck was salty. If you want something less salty, maybe stick with the steelhead option.

EBO

Grilled Lamb Chops Barley (Additional $7)  has braised neck, Sunchokes, and Salsa Verde. We were so excited to see the lamb chops on the menu that we didn’t see the addition $7 charge for this dish. It makes sense since this dish is originally $33 on the menu. M got the lamb medium and was cooked perfectly.

EBO

Chocolate Pot de Crème, Momon, Crispy Chocolate Bits

Looking at the menu, you probably have no idea what will arrive at your table. M imagined a chocolate cake, but it was more like a small chocolate mousse, cake and bits. It still tasted good.

EBO

Poached Pineapple, Spiced Filo, Almond Cake

This dessert was pretty good and I enjoyed it. A good end to the meal.

EBO

At the end we even got white chocolates with a passionfruit filling.

Overall, the $28 menu at EBO was pretty good. You just need to choose which item appeals to your palate . I totally wish I chose the steelhead instead of the duck. Just looking at their regular menu, you are definitely saving when getting the Dine Out menu.

I got a lovely email from Joeys with a $50 gift card for the holidays. A nice surprise, so I decided to have dinner with ShyGirl. Joeys has come a long way and I remember a time when they only had one location in Coquitlam. Super addictive place! That was probably 5 or 6 years ago.

I always wanted to try having dinner here and see how the menu has evolved. Joeys Burnaby location is in the old location of Shark Club near Brentwood Mall.

Joeys

The location is quite nice and their menu has slowly evolved over the years. It’s definitely funny to see sushi on the menu.

Joeys

Sapporo ($6) is a beer that I must have and it’s on tap too! It’s light and crisp.

Joeys

Ahi Tuna Tacos ($12) has seared tuna, toasted sesame ginger coleslaw & wasabi aioli. It’s not spicy at all. It tasted great and the sesame and tuna is a perfect match. I’d definitely recommend this item, but it can be a tad expensive.

Joeys

Sashimi Tuna Salad ($17.50) has seared rare ahi, mixed greens, mango, peanuts, avocado & cilantro mint lime dressing. I had no idea what to expect from the salad but when it arrived at the table, it was SO pretty. I really didn’t want to eat it since it looked like art.

After staring at it for a long time, I dug in and the flavours were really good. But for $17.50, it was an expensive salad!

Joeys

Rotisserie Chicken ($22) comes with its natural juices, dirty rice & seasonal vegetables.

Overall, the food was delicious and presented nicely on the plate, but it sure is quite expensive. You still get a great meal and the service is great as well. There is free valet parking in the parkade too.

Foodology Disclaimer: I was invited by ChineseBites to try Grand Dynasty’s signature dishes with a few other bloggers. The service is not representative of their usual service since they knew we were coming.

Grand Dynasty

Grand Dynasty is located at the Grand Villa Casino in Burnaby. It is a popular location for Dim Sum, but a great place for dinners too. The prices are generally a tad higher than other Chinese restaurants in the area but pretty good place to dine.

Grand Dynasty

The interior is clean and there are lots of round tables available.

Grand Dynasty

Pan Fried Jumbo Prawn with Egg Yolk Sauce was my favorite since the sauce didn’t overpower the sweetness of the prawn.

Grand Dynasty

Pan Fried Jumbo Prawn with a house Spicy Sauce was a good sauce, but not my favorite prawn sauce. It wasn’t very spicy either.

Grand Dynasty

Boiled Live Lobster in Superior Broth comes with the lobster all cut up on a plate with bean sprout.

Grand Dynasty

They take the meat and then prepare it at your table till it’s all cooked.

Grand Dynasty

The broth was very had a great taste and a good addition to the meal.

Grand Dynasty

Baked Chicken stuffed with Sea Cucumber looks like a regular chicken on the outside, but all the sea cucumber is hidden.

Grand Dynasty

Once you cut through the skin, the sea cucumber is revealed. I’ve never had sea cucumber, so I was very intrigued to see how it would taste. The duck fat really marinated the sea cucumber to give it a great taste.

Grand Dynasty

Live Jumbo Ling Cod Fish Hot Pot was a good dish, but I didn’t particularly love it since I don’t really like the flavour combination of sweet and salty together.

 Grand Dynasty

Sautéed Green Vegetable & Wild Mushroom with an arrangement of pumpkin and winter melon. I loved the mushrooms!

Grand Dynasty

Deep Fried Crispy Chicken with Sticky Rice

Grand Dynasty

It  was a very interesting dish with layers of sticky rice and crispy chicken. I thought it was alright, but was a unique dish.

Grand Dynasty

Live Lobster & Seafood with Crispy Rice in Soup was probably one of my favorite dishes.

Grand Dynasty

The crispy rice that is added to the soup makes a *snap* *crackle* *pop* sound as it is added in. It had a great aroma of lobster!

Grand Dynasty

Shredded Coconut Creamy Tart came at the end of the meal.

Grand Dynasty

Black Sesame & Coconut Layer Cake came at the end too. I loved this jello.

Overall, I’ve had pretty good experiences in the past at Grand Dynasty. The service and food is still pretty good.  Whether its dim sum or just a dinner, you can’t go wrong here.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Good food!
  • A bit on the pricy side, but still decent
  • Weekday afternoon you usually get good service since it’s not packed.
  • After food adventure to the ….CASINO
  • Free parking

Sushimoto is a Japanese restaurant located at Holdom Station in Burnaby. It is just steps away and is a hit in the neighbourhood. They have the usual good stuff you can find at a Japanese restaurant – sushi, sashimi, and rice bowls.

The interior isn’t too large, so it’s hard to fit large groups if it’s a busy night. There are bar seats and booth seating.

Complementary tea comes in cute cups.

Complementary Spring Rolls are a nice treat before the meal.

Mad For Garlic Gyoza was very disappointing, it sounded more exciting than it tasted. It just reminded me of the ones you would find at grocery stores…also they fell apart very easily.

Baked Salmon Kama was OK, but there were bones, so not great for little kids.

Korroke comes with 2 pieces of different varieties. One is filed with plain potato and corn, the other was like curry.

Ika Geso Karrage comes with a side of sweet chili dipping sauce. The squid was lightly coated and good.

Sockeye Salmon Sashimi comes with 9 pieces and was very vibrant and red. Fresh and delicious.

Tuna Tataki is awesome as usual! The tuna is lightly seasoned and seared. It is topped with garnish and ponzu sauce.

Prawn Tempura was crunchy on the outside and delicious. Don’t leave it too long or else it will go limp.

Toro Aburi and the Unagi Aburi was very very delicious! The toro just melts in your mouth. Both items are torched and topped with teriyaki sauce.

Negitoro Roll comes in 6 pieces. Delicious too.

Kapa Roll and Mango Roll.

Amusement Roll has cream cheese, cucumber, salmon, egg, crab meat, ikura, Mayo and unagi sauce. The roll was pretty average and the addition of the cream cheese made this interesting. Other restaurants usually have it in the Philadelphia roll. The cream cheese worked well!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Street Parking
  • Large variety in menu
  • Sashimi, Aburi Sushi = good!
  • Make reservations to avoid waits.
