It’s a New Year and 2015 is looking like it’s going to be a great year. I’ve done juice cleanses in the past but I found none of them really tasted great plus I always feel like I’m slowly getting sicker.

When Good Life Cleanses sent me a 3-day Classic Cleanse, I had to give it a try. I knew there must be a juice cleanse that tastes good.

Good Life Cleanse is based out of Nanamio, BC, where creator Andrea Dershin develops the juices and cleansing programs. She thought about creating the company while living in NYC and came back to her roots in Nanaimo to launch the business and spread the good word of juicing to the Island. Andrea strongly believes she has the best tasting, most nutritionally balanced juice cleanse you can get your hands on.

goodlife-cleanse-box

Since I am located in Vancouver, the cleanse ships via FedEx and gets delivered to your door. I missed my initial delivery since I was at work, so I had to go to the FedEx depot to pick it up before they closed for the evening.

goodlife-cleanse-inside

Luckily, the juices are kept cool with the insulated packaging and a few ice packs. I quickly moved them to the fridge to keep it cool for the next 3 days.

You will get a little card inside the box showing you how to do the cleanse effectively, plus how to intensify the cleanse.

goodlife-cleanse-classic-greens

Classic Greens has apple, cucumber, romaine, celery, lemon, spinach, kale, parsley, and ginger. This juice was really good, there were enough apples to really sweeten it up. It was a good start to the cleanse and I always looked forward to this drink.

goodlife-cleanse-sweet-life

Sweet Life has pineapple, cucumber, apple, lime, and mint. This is probably the sweetest of the drinks because of the pineapple. I could drink this on a regular basis!

goodlife-cleanse-all-u-need

All U Need has carrot, celery, spinach, and parsley. This juice was ok to drink, but I could taste a lot of carrots in this juice. I never liked any of these veggies to begin with, so it did take me a while to finish this juice compared to the others.

goodlife-cleanse-master-cleanse

Master Cleanse has filtered water, lemon, organic maple syrup, and cayenne. This drink basically tastes like lemonade and quite refreshing, but the cayenne pepper kicks in a few seconds after. There’s a lot of cayenne, so it did feel like my sinuses were on fire. I found this sensation great for my allergies as it cleared my nose.

goodlife-cleanse-roots-remedy

Roots Remedy has cucumber, apple, celery, carrots, beet, lemon, ginger, parsley, and mint. The beets make this whole drink a maroon red, so try not to spill it or else it will leave a slight stain. I accidentally spilled a bit all over the kitchen counter and it looked like I murdered one of my cats.

The earthy taste of the beets were balanced out by the sweet apples, lemons and carrots.

goodlife-cleanse-creamy-cashew

Creamy Cashew is made of filtered water, raw cashews, dates, vanilla bean, cinnamon, and sea salt. You drink this 2 hours prior to your bedtime. After I finished this drink, I was pretty full. The texture was thicker and creamier but you can really taste the vanilla bean and cinnamon making this like a dessert.

After the 3 days, you will probably be craving solid food again or some salty french fries, but try to refrain. You’re supposed to ease back into solid foods by incorporating certain foods slowly back into your meals. Easier said than done. I may have had a few hash browns here and there. It’s quite tough and you may develop some common detox symptoms like fatigue, crankiness, headaches, achy body, skin pimples, flakey skin, constipation or nausea. Fro myself, I always seem to get headaches.

If you can follow pre-cleanse, cleanse, and post cleanse instructions, I applaud you. You can choose to do this cleanse for a day or up to 7 days. 3 days seems to be a good amount of time and the first day is definitely the hardest since all the cravings really start kicking in. Out of the 3 juice cleanses I’ve done so far, these juices taste pretty good.

Juice Cleanse

A few weeks ago, M and I tried doing The Juice Cleanse. This came about because of a bet since neither of us have willpower against eating food. We placed our order online on their website and within the next day (I live in Burnaby), it was delivered to our house. We went with the 3 day cleanse for $195.

For beginners, the stressed-out or those who suffer from chronic inflammation or digestive upset. The Three-Day Cleanse is a gentle flush of your system. It normalizes digestion and helps regulate hormones, remove impurities from your colon and supports your liver. You will feel refreshed and revitalized.

The Juice Cleanse is  created by the guys behind The Juice Truck in Vancouver. The 3 day cleanse comes with 7 beverages a day, which totals to 21 bottles. It comes to a little under $9.29 a bottle. It seems expensive, but it’s about the same price you would pay for cold pressed juice in Vancouver for something similar. I would normally never pay this much for a short-term diet, but I wanted to try it.

Juice Cleanse

M and I have never tried a cleanse before, but we do drink a lot of Jugo Juice. We didn’t really prep before we started the juice cleanse, which was a bad idea. We ate a lot of BBQ and drank a lot the night before.  On their website, it even had a guide on how to prep for the cleanse. You spend 2 days prior to the cleanse by eliminating certain foods from your diet like candy, greasy foods, meat, etc.

I didn’t really have a goal to lose weight, but I felt like I needed to clean up my system because I eat an obscenely gross amount of food outside rather than eating cleanly at home. What can I say, I really love food in Vancouver.

Juice Cleanse

The first day was definitely tough. I was very low on energy, had a headache and spent most of the time laying on a couch flipping through Netflix.

  • The Digestive: Cucumber, apple, spinach, celery, parsley and lemon. It tasted alright, not bad as a first drink. The cucumber is definitely the dominant flavour, but the apple and lemon help balance out the flavours.
  • The Base: Kale, cucumber, celery, pear, lemon and ginger. Wow, did I hate this drink. The cucumber is very strong and the ginger is prominent in the aftertaste.
  • The Energizer:  E3Live, coconut water, pineapple, mint, and ginger. You also add in a pouch of chia seeds to the drink. This was always my “treat” because it would be somewhat sweet from the pineapple. It still isn’t very sweet, but it will do.
  • Refresh Tonic: Fennel, cabbage, cucumber, pear, aloe vera, and ginger. This was much better than The Base, but it still had the spicy ginger aftertaste.
  • The Base: ICK! You have to have it twice a day, but you just need to chug it down.
  • Protein Milk: Hemp seed, walnut, date, cinnamon, vanilla, and filtered water. This drink is thick and creamy. Definitely very filling. Every time I had this drink, I would feel very queasy afterwards. I’m not sure why, but I really wanted to throw up.
  • Sleep Tonic: Pear, romaine, and mint. Tasted like liquified toothpaste. Clearly the mint is potent in this one.

By the night-time, I was developing a slight fever and was lethargic. Apparently it’s a normal symptom and its due to the toxins being released from the body.

Juice Cleanse

The second day followed the same series of drinks, but you can feel the effects of the cleanse. I peed a lot! If you also would like to be grossed out, instead of pooping, I peed everything out like diarrhea.

The day was much better, but it was still a challenge. I had to avoid going out with friend and had no social life or else I would be lugging the juice bottles around.

Some people say they gain a lot of energy from the cleanse, but I just didn’t have any. It was probably due to the fact, I’m not a regular healthy eater nor do I go to the gym on a regular basis.

Juice Cleanse

The third and last day arrived and they introduced one new drink to the mix. The days schedule was:

  • The Digestive
  • Skin Deep: Strawberry, kiwi, apple, and lemon. It is by far the best one, but very sour. It’s very sweet too.
  • The Energizer
  • Refresh Tonic
  • The Base
  • Protein Milk
  • Sleep Tonic

By the end of the day, I was so happy that it was over.

There are definitely many different kinda of juices and cleanses on the market, but it does have a hefty price tag. What I liked about the cleanse is that all the drinks are prepared and you have a schedule to follow… too bad they weren’t very easy to drink. The only extra things that I snuck into the cleanse was a few fruits and veggies.

If your sole intention is to lose weight, you will definitely lose weight, but you’ll probably gain it all back if you keep on eating what you ate before the cleanse. The 3 day juice cleanse was a nice reset and I was down 6 pounds, but I soon found that I started gaining it all back. I blame it from all the sweets treats from the holidays and my inability to go the gym because it’s too cold outside. There’s no one to blame but myself.

The Juice Truck is located in Gastown and serves up delicious cups of juices, smoothies and other drinks. M and I were passing by and decided to have a post-lunch snack.

The juices are quite expensive, but are very filling. I was quite surprised I couldn’t finish it all.

The Almost Chocolate has a banana blended with medjool dates, almond butter, raw cacao, raw maca & soy milk. M liked the combination of the chocolate and bananas!

The Avocado Pineapple ($7) has avocado blended with pineapple, coconut water, lime, vanilla & agave. It was a good combination of ingredients! Healthy too. My only complaint is that it wasn’t cold enough.

Overall, the flavour combinations are pretty cool. The drink will really fill you up for lunch, so you don’t need to worry too much about getting hungry after.

What can be better than a ice cool juice during the summer? When I was a Lougheed Mall, I just had to get a large Orange Juice to quench my thirst.

I really don’t like any of the other drinks at Orange Julius since they taste super sweet. I really like juice. I don’t like a million flavors in my juice. It’s just a personal preference.

What is super interesting is how the freshly squeezed orange juice is submersed in ice, but it was not very cold at all. I found this quite odd. For about $5, I didn’t mind too too much since I would rather not sit in my kitchen squeezing oranges for 30 mins. Making orange juice with real fruit is really difficult if you don’t have a machine.

When I was younger, I thought I could juice an orange with the rind on….so when it came down to drinking it, it tasted SUPER bitter.

Do you have any weird stories about juice?

We were making our way back to Vancouver and decided to stop by Alderwood Mall to do a bit of shopping. I love Alderwood Mall! It has basically everything. Since the sun was shining and we were exhausted from sitting in the car, we decided to get refreshments.

We wanted something healthy so we headed to the food court. Nothing but soda and coffee could be found, so we looked at the directory because we knew there had to be a juice bar somewhere close. Sure enough, there is a Jamba Juice right outside the food court.

For a Friday afternoon it was quite busy.

Their menu has lots of smoothies and even hot drinks.

Fabo ordered the Razzmatazz (16 oz – $3.40 USD). This contains mixed berry juice blend, orange sherbert, strawberries, bananas and ice.

BusanGirl ordered the Mango A-Go-Go (16oz – $3.40USD) . It contains passionfruit mango juice blend, mangoes, pineapple sherbert and ice. She liked the smoothie a lot because a few hours earlier, she got another smoothie from another store but it only had 1 strawberry and 3 blueberries. She was impressed by the quality and the amount of fruit at Jamba Juice.

M ordered the Strawberries Wild Smoothie (Original size $4.40). It contains apple strawberry juice blend, non-fat vanilla frozen yogurt, strawberries, bananas and ice.

I ordered the Apple n’ Green Smoothie (16oz – $4.20 USD). It has apple-strawberry juice, vegetable juice (carrots, spinach, bell peppers, kale, and lettuce), peach mangoes, bananas and ice.

The thought of having a fruit/vegetable drink might sound weird, but it was really good! It had  very smooth consistency and it did not get icy at all. It had a distinct tastes of apples and then hints of mangoes afterwards. The best part of this drink are the little fruit bits left behind from the blender. Maneuvering your straw to suck up all the little mango chunks.

Overall, we loved this place! Hands down, we all agreed this place was 100x better than Jugo Juice and Booster Juice.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Free Boosts of your choice
  • Lots of flavours and options
