mcd-mighty

Earlier this month, McDonalds Canada introduced the Mighty Angus Burger with Jalapeños. It is made with grass and grain-fed cattle from Lewis Farm in Alberta. We were not sure what was so mighty about this burger, but M really wanted to give it a try.

Besides this burger, their Angus burger line-up also includes:

  • Bacon and Cheese Angus Third Pounder
  • Deluxe Angus Third Pounder

In the past, they used to have a mushroom and swiss Angus Burger, but it seems like it was discontinued.

mcd-mighty-angus-box

It comes in their regular Angus burger box.

mcd-mighty-angus-burger

Mighty Angus with Jalapeños has creamy BBQ sauce, jalapeño pepper slices, jalapeño crisps, hickory smoked bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, onions and the beef patty n the sesame seed bun.

The burger comes at a whopping 810 Calories and 1160mg of sodium…..ouch!

mcd-mighty-angus-inside

Apart from the addition of the Jalapeños, nothing about this burger is new or amazing. The patty seems to have shrunk a little bit too and the circumference of the bun is a bit bigger making the patty seem tiny. The bacon has been improved and grown in size compared to the bacon in the other type of burgers. It actually resembles real bacon.

M thought the burger was decent, but it still doesn’t compare to the Angry Whopper from Burger King.

skk-outer

SKK is a Mediterranean Restaurant on Robson Street across from the Vancouver Public Library. They are a chain restaurant that originated from Italy, where they provide customers with healthy fast food dishes inspired by the Mediterranean regions.

I received a SocialShopper voucher-  $10 for $20 worth of Mediterranean food and drinks for two at SKK. I came after work with CanucksGirl for a quick dinner.

skk-beef-wrap

Turco Beef Wrap ($7.49 +$3) has beef shawarma, tomatoes, onions, pickles, cabbage, hot sauce and secret sauce wrapped in a tortilla. The wrap is then grilled. The wrap was tightly wrapped together and held nicely without falling apart.

skk-wrap-inner

It’s packed full of ingredients and is very filling. I split half of it with my friend and we were already quite full eating half of this. The beef shawarma was ok, but it was missing some flavour to make the wrap pop.

skk-shwarma

Shawarma Chicken Plate ($9.49 +$3) has Chicken shawarma, pita bread, hummus, tabbouleh, hot sauce, and another sauce that might have been tzatziki. I felt the chicken was a bit dry and lacking flavour. Pretty average flavours but it seemed it was lacking the freshness that I was looking for.

skk-greek

For our combo, we got a can of pop and a greek salad. We didn’t realize the meal already comes with tabbouleh, so we would have gotten a dessert if we knew. We just took it home and ate it the next day.

skk-arabella

Arabella are grilled tortillas smothered with Nutella. I came with 2 sticks, so it was good to share as each one is quite long. I got this as part of the other combo. Best idea ever!

skk-nutella

I cut one in half and you can see all the layers separated with Nutella. It was the perfect dessert to end the meal. Mmm Mmm Mmm you really can’t resist Nutella.

skk-street

Overall, the staff are quite friendly, but I found the food to be quite average and lacked a bit of freshness. My favourite item was the Arabella!

tacobell-menu

Taco Bell Canada finally introduces the Doritos Locos Tacos permanently on their menus. When my relatives were here, they really wanted to go to Taco Bell. I was surprised that they wanted Taco Bell, but it was on their list of places they really wanted to eat at. So I agreed to go.

When we were there, we saw they had two Doritos Locos Taco meals they were offering:

  • Doritos Locos Tacos Big Box ($8.99)
  • Doritos Locos Tacos Crunch Combo ($6.99)

With these combo’s you can choose if you want the Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco flavours.

M and I like to try everything so we got each of the combos.

Just as a note, I’m not exactly sure what happened here, but it seems that the described combo and what came out for our order were inaccurate. I didn’t realize this till after our visit. The person that took our order barely knew how to use their POS system and seemed super confused about everything. SO, our order was all jumbled up.

tacobell-order

It all came and clearly we have a lot to eat among 4 people. hahaha.

tacobell-box

Doritos Locos Tacos Big Box ($8.99) came with 2 Doritos Locos Taco Supreme, 1 beef burrito, 1 Doritos Nacho Supreme and a soda. There’s a lot of food in this box.

tacobell-burrito

Somehow M managed to finish everything.

tacobell-dorrito-nacho

Instead of the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos for the Nacho Supreme, M got the Nacho Cheese Doritos shells for it. Not a bad combination. The Nacho cheese of the Doritos definitely enhanced the taste a bit.

tacobell-dorito-two

Doritos Locos Tacos Crunch Combo ($6.99) comes with a Doritos Locos Taco Supreme, fries, a cheesey gordita crunch and a drink.

Even though me tacos were labeled the Nacho cheese Doritos shells, it was actually the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco.
Also, I never got my cheesy gordita crunch, but I got the two tacos instead. This was kinda annoying.

tacobell-dorito

The taco is the same as their usual tacos but the shell just taste like Doritos Nachos.

tacobell-fries

We somehow got this too and it didn’t come with my combo since it was supposed to be regular fries, but I didn’t mind. It’s basically the Fries Supreme with the meat, sour cream, cheese, tomato and chives on top. It definitely tastes better than regular fries.

All the food is pretty standard for a Fast Food restaurant. The Doritos Locos Taco and Taco Bell teaming up together to spice up their taco shells was pretty neat, but it didn’t really add any alluring taste to the food.

Of the two flavours – Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch, the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco was far more tastier. The Cool Ranch taste was too subtle. The only thing different about these tacos is just the shell. All the ingredients are the same.

mcdonalds-burger

Sometimes I have craving for McDonalds and I can’t help but get a taste. It a quick and cheap meal. I work right across the street, so it is quite convenient. This time, instead of getting a regular meal, I got whatever was on their Value Picks menu. I didn’t feel like drinking a coke.

The two items featured are the Bacon Ranch Junior Chicken and McDouble. Each burger was $1.99, so it didn’t hurt my pocket at all.

mcdonalds-chicken

Bacon Ranch Junior Chicken has a McChicken patty topped with thick cut Applewood smoked bacon, melted white cheddar, crisp shredded lettuce and mayo, served on a classic bun.

mcdonalds-double

McDouble has a slice of melted processed cheddar cheese between two beef patties, topped with pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard on a toasted bun.

None of the burgers looked pretty but all the ingredient are in there somewhere. The burgers never look like the advertisements. Can’t complain for such a cheap meal.

timhortons-kettle-chips

Tim Hortons recently released Kettle Chips. I found that it’s not a bad combination with their sandwiches. Sometimes you want that extra crunch in your meal. When I ordered it, it came out warm, which was a nice touch.

A small bag is $0.99 and a large one is $1.89.

timhortons-kettle

They are probably not cooked on-site as they need to keep standards consistent through all their locations.

timhortons-chip

The kettle chips were alright but after a while, I thought their chips were a bit too salty. It’s probably a personal preference. I love chips and I always tend to finish the bag if it’s Miss Vickie’s or any other crunchy type of chips.

Nice addition to the menu if you like chips, but it’s not revolutionary different that what you see in the grocery stores.

Currently, McDonalds Canada is having their Steak on Demand promotion from February 18 – March 31, 2014. The Steak n’ Egg Bagel and their Steak n’ Caesar Signature Wraps are two items they are featuring throughout the campaign.

I came for breakfast with a coworker for a coffee, but I saw the steak promos and I caved and got the Steak n’ Egg Bagel.

mcdonalds-breakfast-bagel-steal

Steak n’ Egg Bagel is made with seasoned steak, folded eggs, processed cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, HP steak sauce, on either regular or multigrain bagel.

mcdonalds-steak-bagel

Once you take the bagel apart, it really doesn’t look that impressive. The first few bites were really good, but as I kept eating it, it got saltier and saltier. The steak patty was packed with pepper and salt, so you really couldn’t taste the true steak flavour. It tasted like their regular beef patty but with more spices.

mcdonalds-steak

Overall, it’s an interesting concept to offer steak 24/7, but for a good steak, you won’t find it here.

yvr-foodcourt

After checking in and going through security at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), M and I were pretty hungry. There’s not a lot of choices before boarding international flights.

We had to choose from:

  • Milestones
  • Starbucks
  • Tim Hortons
  • Euro Cafe
  • A&W
  • Burger King
  • Subway
  • Hanami Express

It’s all fast food and it’s definitely hard to choose what your last meal before the plane will be.

yvr-aw

I actually quite like A&W for the burgers and you can really notice their fresh ingredients. It doesn’t come close to McDonalds. All their beef is 100% pure and contains no hormones or steroids. Also no additives or preservatives.

Their quality has gotten a lot better over the years and I prefer it over the other fast food options.

yvr-aw-meal

We got 2 teen burger meals, onion rings, yam fries and cokes.

My favourite sides are the onion rings. The batter is fried till its crispy and the onion is large. I wasn’t a fan of the yam fries, but I never liked yam fries in the first place. M did enjoy the yam fries.

yvr-aw-teen

Teen Burger is my favourite and it has lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese, ketchup, onion, pickles and the burger patty between the two buns. Even looking at the burger, the ingredients look fresh. I ate it all and enjoyed it! Yum.

All the other burger at A&W are pretty good, but you can’t beat the teen burger.

fanpack-box

McDonalds created the Fan Pack to have people share the moment during the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi. It costs $13.99 and it contains:

  • 20 McNuggets
  • 2 Medium Fries
  • 2 Medium Drinks
  • 2 Cookies
  • 2 limited edition Coca Cola pins

You can find this at most McDonalds in Canada. It a great item to bring friends if you are all watching the game together. Unfortunately, M and I don’t have cable, so we bought this box and watched some Netflix. It’s a quick meal for 2 very lazy people on a weekend.

fanpack-contents

The inside of the box houses all the food.

fanpack-coke

Coke! Not the most healthiest drink, but its nice to feel the bubbles fizzle down your throat.

fanpack-cookie

Two of their soft baked cookies come in a little bag, they taste ok for cookies. Nothing amazing.

fanpack-boxes

The best part are the nuggets. They are split up into 2 boxes of 10 and you can ask them for whatever sauce you want. Our choices were hot mustard and sweet and sour sauce.

fanpack-nuggets

nom nom nom nom. All them nuggets.

fanpack-pins

The best part of the Fan pack is really about collecting the pins. We only got 2 pins and we are missing 2 more. I’m not sure if we will get another fan pack, but we really want to have the other 2 to complete the collection.

Have you had the Fan Pack yet?

Every time, I have a flight out of Incheon, I have to stop by KFC for a quick snack. 2 years ago when I was here, I discovered that KFC is pretty awesome in Korea. As I was here again, might as well turn it into a tradition. I have my love of fast food and I never give up a chance chowing down on global fast food chains in many countries.

KFC Korea

There’s lots of seats and people tend to eat very quickly and move a long.

KFC Korea

Tower Burger (4,800 won) comes at a whopping 800 calories. This tower is made of fried breast fillet, hashbrowns, lettuce, and cheese. It’s quite large and you will get your fill of carbs.

KFC Korea

2 pieces of fried chicken (2,200 won) and you have the option to have it original or spicy. Of course I had it spicy since I was in Korea.

Just look at how crazy battered that is! It was very crispy on the outside and the meat was very moist. It had the right about of spiciness and oh man, finger lickin’ good!

KFC Korea

I posed with Colonel Sanders because why not? We both have glasses and love fried chicken. It’s true what they say, KFC is better in Asia.

starbucks-caramel-flan

Starbucks has turned the traditional custard dessert – Caramel flan into a new drink at all their locations. As the weather is still chilly sometimes we need to huddle inside with a coffee and enjoy the rainy Vancouver weather.

Thats just what KoreanGirl and I did this weekend. We both had a Starbucks reward available to redeem a free drink, so we both decided to try the new Caramel Flan Latte. If we hated it, it wouldn’t be a loss since we used our rewards on it.

starbucks-caramel-flan

The Caramel Flan Latte is composed of espresso, steamed milk and caramel flavours of creamy flan. Topped with caramel-infused whipped cream and caramel flan drizzle.

starbucks-caramel-flan

KoreanGirl ordered it with it’s normal sweetness and said it was way too sweet especially with the caramel flan drizzle. I got mine half sweet and it was much better. There’s definitely a lot of caramel going on here.

I’m still not sold on this drink, so I will still stick to my usual lattes.

If you tried it, what do you think about it?

McDonald’s Grilled Chicken Spicy Buffalo Snack Wrap

I needed a quick lunch and what better way to be lazy than go to McDonalds across the street. The weather was also terrible, so I didn’t want to go far for food. It’s been raining non-stop in Vancouver for the past few days and sometimes I just feel like a cat.

McDonalds has a new Spicy Buffalo Chicken Snack Wrap on their menu and probably only available for a limited time.

McDonald’s Grilled Chicken Spicy Buffalo Snack Wrap

Spicy Buffalo Chicken Snack Wrap ($1.99) comes with shredded lettuce, chicken breast, monterey jack cheese, cheddar cheese, and spicy buffalo sauce.

The look of it isn’t impressive and seems carelessly put together. It obviously varies depending on who makes it. I chose the grilled chicken instead of crispy since I find that the chicken in more flavourful and tender.

The taste of the entire wrap isn’t bad. The spicy buffalo sauce reminds me of a milder version of Frank’s Red Hots.

Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni pizza

Panago Pizza recently introduced their new Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza. As Panago pizza is very close to our place, M decided to order some for lunch. Best lazy meal ever. We both love spicy food, so we really wanted to see if it would really set our taste buds on fire. The basic pepperoni pizza is awesome and you can’t go wrong. When you add a bit of spice into the picture, it should taste good.

Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni pizza

We ordered a Large Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza for $15. It is made of Italian tomato sauce, spicy pepperoni, and mozzarella. There’s so much pepperoni that you can’t even see the pepperoni slices underneath.

It wasn’t very spicy and had a bit of a spicy tingle. If you want some extra spice to it, add some tabasco sauce or Franks Red Hots sauce.

CHICKEN GARDEN SALAD

To balance out the greasy pizza, I ordered the Chicken Garden Salad that comes with grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, green peppers, grape tomatoes, and red onions. It comes with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The salad was alright. The chicken pieces tasted ok, but it wasn’t great.

Overall, the Deluxe Spicy Pepperoni Pizza is a good item to order when people are over.

Taco Time

On Tuesdays, lines at the Taco Time in Pacific Centre gets quite long.

People want a quick and cheap lunch. I was doing some shopping at noon and needed a very very quick lunch before heading back to work. As I spent a large amount of money on clothes…I felt guilty, so a cheap lunch option was good to balance out my shopping.

Taco Time

Taco Tuesday! 99 cents for a soft or hard shelled taco. Tempting even though it’s not very good compared to all the other places Downtown.

Taco Time

I ordered 2 soft shell tacos and 2 hard shell tacos. It didn’t seem like a lot of food at the time, but after I ate all of this,  I was crazy full.

Taco Time

Hard shell Taco has cheddar cheese, lettuce, and ground beef in the shell. I find they add a lot of salt and spices to the meat, so you will get thirsty.

Taco Time

Soft shell Taco has cheddar cheese, lettuce, and ground beef in the soft shell.

Both tacos are essentially the same, but I do prefer the hard taco for the added crunch.

Taco Time

Don’t forget the sauce! Mild sauce and then the spicy green one.

Taco Time

Don’t forget the Mexifries! Deep-fried tater tots! My childhood favourite.

Overall, nothing fancy and does the trick of filling up your empty stomach. For 99 cents, you can’t go wrong.

mcdonalds canada poutine

McDonalds Canada has finally brought Poutine to the West Coast. They first introduced this in Quebec decades ago, but wasn’t available anywhere else in Canada. It retails for $3.99, but you can upgrade your meal from fries to poutine for $1.50.

I’m still waiting for the McLobster to make it’s way to the West Coast.

mcdonalds canada poutine

Inside the box are the classic McDonalds fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds. It’s definitely had mixed reviews and varied expectations so far from people.

mcdonalds canada poutine

The actual item doesn’t look like the advertisements since there’s not as many fries in the box. It’s about half full. M and I dug in and we thought the poutine was alright. The fries were not overly salty and went well with the gravy and curds.

I wouldn’t order this on it’s own since $3.99  as it was quite expensive. You might as well order a meal and upgrade. It’s a nice addition to the menu if you are a gravy and cheese lover.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Dunkin’ Donuts in Korea is very different from the ones in North America. Everything is Korean-ized, so you will find things like sweet potato donuts, olive oil donuts, and other weird creations.

M and I were in Coex Mall and everything was under construction. We had very bad timing when coming here. Only a few shops were open and it totally sucked. We were roaming around the vast empty mall and found a Dunkin’ Donuts and we felt like it was time for a little snack.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Dunkin Donuts Korea

As we were traveling in Korea near Halloween, they had some cute treats.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

What is unique about Dunkin’ Donuts that drew me in was their breakfast and snack items. They look pretty decent.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

When I saw their burritos I got kinda hungry. I actually have no idea if they have these in the North American Dunkin’ Donuts because I’ve never seen one. There is a Dunkin’ Donuts in Montreal but nowhere else in Canada.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Plastic food on display.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

M and I shared the Spicy Chicken Burrito, Sausage Burrito and a Grapefruit slush.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Sausage Burrito (3,500 won) it’s a huge sausage with cheese, fried rice and chili sauce.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Spicy Chicken Burrito (3,500 won) has spicy chicken, fried rice and a blend of two types of cheese. It was a bit spicy.

Dunkin Donuts Korea

Grapefruit Slush was really gross. It was very sweet and it was more artificial. It melted so slowly that we could of used a wider straw.

Overall Dunkin’ Donuts is ok. A bit on the mediocre side, but kinda reminds me of Tim Hortons in Canada.

1379961_10150326997959986_1074829136_n

M and I were watching TV one day and we saw that Pizza Hut Canada just introduced the Crunchy Cheesy Bites Pizza. A large 2 topping pizza is $17.

Crunchy Cheesy Bites Pizza is different from a regular pizza. It has a crust made of cheesy bites topped with crunchy corn flakes. Even though type of pizza is new in North America, it has been around Asian for some time.

You can rip off the bites and eat the separately, or enjoy it in its original pizza style.

Pizza Hut Crunchy Cheesy Bites

When the pizza arrived, it has some resemblance to what you see in the commercials. As I opened the pizza box, I was so excited to dig in.

Pizza Hut Crunchy Cheesy Bites

The cheese does look like it’s oozing out, but wasn’t cheesy at all. The inside of the bite was hollow and the cheese was hard. When you bite into the entire bite, its squishy and doughy. There was not crunch in the crust at all. Maybe the pizza was overcooked.

It doesn’t live up to the hype. It was alright, but I wouldn’t order it again.  I still liked the hotdog stuffed crust they introduced a year ago.

Website: www.pizzahut.ca

Pizza Hut Korea

I thought I knew pizza …  but when I came to South Korea the pizza wasn’t the same. M and I made it a mission to have pizza at Pizza Hut. Their pizzas are quite different and you won’t be able to find it in North America. Imagine sweet potato and minimal tomato sauce on your pizza. To me that’s nuts.

pizzahut-door

Pohang has a new Pizza Hut and we found one in their Downtown core.

Pizza Hut Korea

They have 4 styles of pizza:

  • Rich Gold
  • Crown Pocket
  • Cheese Crunch
  • The Special

Pizza Hut Korea

The salad bar used to be good, but this particular location sucked a lot. Two people must share a plate for the price you pay. The salad isn’t fresh and a bit wilted. The fruit looked stale and old, but you can try rambutan and passion fruit that you can’t easily find in North America.

On the bright side, you can get pasta, rice cake and mussels at the bar too.

Pizza Hut Korea

This is what I grabbed. Everything tasted ok, but I wouldn’t get the salad bar again. Nothing tasted fresh.

Pizza Hut Korea

Pizza Hut’s Rich Gold Pizza (Medium – 27,900 won) has a sweet potato mousse circling the crust. It’s essentially two carbs in every bite.

We got the supreme toppings but minus the meat since we were eating with some vegetarians. It tasted pretty good surprisingly. It still doesn’t compare to normal pizza because they use little to no tomato sauce. It’s mostly just cheese and sweet potato.

Pizza Hut Korea

Bulgogi Crown Pocket (Medium – 28,900 won) has bits of beef on top with peppers, bbq sauce, ranch, and mushrooms. It’s pretty expensive since the pizza wasn’t that big. The bulgogi was a bit sparse and you could barely notice any meat.

Nestled in the crust is sweet potato purée and cream cheese. I thought it was a gross combination.

Pizza Hut Korea

Bacon Steak Crown Pocket (Medium – 28,900 won) has a sweet sauce drizzled over the peppers, cheese and green beans. It was ok, but I didn’t like the sweet and savoury combination.

I wasn’t a fan of these Korean-style pizzas. It’s a cool sounding combination but not nice on the palate. The price was very expensive! It was about $28 for a medium pizza. Also, the service was quite poor

Have you tried these before?

Website: www.pizzahut.co.kr

Once we landed in Seoul, Korea we needed to take 2 trains and a taxi to get to Pohang, Korea. It was a long commute and took about 3 hours. Once we got to Singyeongju Station near Gyeongju, M and I needed to take a dinner break and found a Lotteria in the station.

If you’ve never heard of Lotteria before, it’s like the Korean McDonalds where it serves fast food like burgers and chicken. It’s literally everywhere in Korea, you’ll find one if you just walk around the streets in any town.

Lotteria

I had no idea what I wanted to get, so it took me a while to stare at the menu.

Lotteria

There was one item that intrigued me – Wild Shrimp Burger. I’ve never seen a shrimp burger, so it was time to check it out a chow down.

Lotteria

Wild Shrimp Burger Combo ($6,200 WON or $6.20 CDN) came with a pop and fries. They have Pepsi and most people in Korea prefer Pepsi over Coca-Cola. This whole meal is just over 900 calories, if you’re into counting. The burger itself is about 500 calories. You definitely shouldn’t come here if you’re trying to lose weight.

Since I’m on vacation, so I can eat ALL the food.

Lotteria

The fries were ok, but it still can’t beat McDonalds. It’s probably because these fries aren’t heavily salted.

Lotteria

Wild Shrimp Burger is made of a sesame bun, shrimp patty, thousand island dressing, tartar sauce, lettuce, pickles, and paprika. It had a unique taste and it kinda reminded me of a fish fillet burger from McDonalds.

The exterior of the shrimp patty was nice and crispy. The inside of the patty has small bits of shrimp, but you really can’t notice it too much. The burger sounded amazing, but when i ate it, it was a bit of a let down.
