Burmese Superstar is a restaurant I go to when I visit San Francisco as their Burmese food is delicious. It’s hard to get good Burmese cuisine where we live, so we made it a mission to come here with family. They don’t take reservations, so we lined up ahead of time before they open to snag their 2 largest tables.

Waiting

As you wait in line, they have complimentary tea that is there for self serve. There is also a bench to sit too. A nice idea, which I liked.

Interior

The space isn’t too large and gets filled up quickly on weekdays and weekends with everyone wanting a taste of their Burmese dishes.

Menu

Burmese Samusas

These are hand wrapped and filled with curried potatoes. Then it is deep-fried and served with their house special red sauce. You can choose from chicken, beef or vegetarian. We went with chicken and it was good. Essentially like Indian Samosas.

Tea Leaf Salad

This salad is the top item to order on the menu. It has romaine lettuce, fried yellow beans, fried garlic, sesame seeds, fresh tomatoes, jalapenos, and dried shrimp. Mix it all together and its absolutely amazing. You can also get this in a vegetarian version too.

Rainbow Salad

There are 22 ingredients in this Rainbow Salad. It is made with four types of noodles, green papaya, onions, dried shrimp, many other things that they don’t list and served with a tamarind dressing. You toss this and enjoy. It’s another popular salad but I still prefer the tea leaf salad.

Oh Noh Kauswer

This is their Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup. One of my favourite items to order. It has Burmese style coconut noodle soup with chicken, onions, eggs, cilantro, lemon, and topped with chili. We got their larger size to share among the table.

Moh Hinga

My favourite noodle soup is their Catfish Chowder Noodle Soup. It has fish chowder with rice noodles, ground catfish, onions, cilantro, lemon, and topped with chili. Highly Recommended.

Duck Garlic Noodles

This has flour noodles with fried garlic, and scallions in a red chili sauce. You can choose this with duck or vegetarian, but we went with the duck. A good amount of garlic flavour and tasty.

Burmese Style Curry and Coconut Rice

This is Burma Superstar’s special curry. It is braised until tender with potatoes and topped with cilantro. You can choose this with beef or lamb. You should order a side with coconut rice to eat with the curry.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is my favourite restaurant in San Francisco and their Burmese dishes are just solid. The dishes are pretty traditional with some tweaks. All the dishes were very homey and comforting that I’ll be back again. Highly recommended.

Amay’s House is a Burmese restaurant in Vancouver. There’s only a handful of Burmese restaurants in Vancouver. My mom grew up in Burma, so she gets really excited when visiting a Burmese restaurant.

I’ve been meaning to come here for a while but haven’t had the chance to make a visit until now. Plus, a few readers urged me to come for a visit.

amay-burmese-inner

The restaurant isn’t that pretty. It’s kinda like a hole in a wall. Very simple decor and nothing fancy.

amay-burmese-tealeaf-salad

Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad ($7.50) has fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, assorted beans and nuts. This is always my favourite item to order at any Burmese restaurant, the crunchy texture of the beans mesh so well with the vegetables. Their version was good but I preferred the one at Wahh Tee a bit more.

amay-burmese-roti

Large Prata served with Chicken Curry ($6.50) is crisp on the outside and when its dipped in the curry, it’s pretty darn good. You can’t leave Amay House without getting Roti.

amay-burmese-noodle-salad

Noodle Salad ($7.50) is made with egg noodles, shrimp powder, bean powder, tamarind sauce, cabbage, onions, and cilantro. It comes with a clear soup on the side. It was creamy and full of flavour. The mixture of spices were great.

amay-burmese-skewer

Chicken Satay ($6.50) and Beef Satay ($6.50) come with 3 pieces each. They were not good as they were tough and over cooked.

amay-burmese-mohinga

Fish Noodle Soup Mohinga ($7) has rice noodles, catfish broth, lemongrass, cilantro, fried garlic and fried split chana dal. A staple of Burmese cuisine! We order this dish at any Burmese restaurant as a baseline test to see how good or bad a restaurant is. If you can’t get Mohinga right, then something isn’t right.

amay-burmese-noodle

Coconut Milk Noodle Soup ($7) has egg noodles, coconut milk, chicken curry, onion and deep fried noodle crisps. It has a rich coconut taste and was quite enjoyable.

Overall, pretty good Burmese food here, but since it was a busy Friday the service was sparse. There was only one server that seemed to do everything. Once the order was in, the food came out at a steady pace.I still prefer to go to Wahh Tee.

Amay's House Burmese and Asian Cuisine on Urbanspoon

WahhTee-outer

Wahh Tee Burmese Restaurant is close to Joyce Station in Vancouver. My mom has been searching for a good authentic Burmese restaurant for a long time as she spent part of her childhood there.

Burmese cuisine is actually quite interesting as it takes influences from India, Thailand, China, and Laos. So, when you take a look at their menu, don’t be surprised to see samosas here.

WahhTee-inner

The restaurant seats about 16 people and only has 4 tables. We came here at 2pm, so it was quite dead, but we did see a few people do take out.

WahhTee-tealeafsalad

Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad ($5) has fermented tea leaves mixed with assorted fried beans. This is one of my favourite dishes! The fried beans give an amazing texture to the salad. There’s not a lot of tea leaves, but man, those beans are crunchy.

WahhTee-noodlesalad

Noodle Salad ($5) has white flour noodles mixed with shrimp powder, tamarind sauce, bean powder, shredded cabbage, onions, and cilantro. It comes with a bit of soup on the side. This was really good! The flavours are really amazing! My little sister wanted to eat this all to herself.

WahhTee-fishnoodle-med

Spicy Fish Noodle Soup (Large – $7.50) has rice noodle with fish broth, banana tree root, lemongrass, and cilantro. It was really good! It isn’t very spicy either but the broth was quite nice. I love the crunch of the fried bean crisps.

WahhTee-fishnoodle-small

Spicy Fish Noodle Soup (Medium – $5.50) just a tad smaller, but still delicious.

WahhTee-spicynoodle

Fish Noodle Soup (Medium – $5.50) was good too but was a bit bland, but they did provide some spicy peppers to add in. Man, adding those peppers made it hotter than the Spicy Fish Noodle Soup. The spicier the better! Mmm Mmm MMMM!

WahhTee-samosa

Deep Fried Vegetable Samosa was 6 pieces for $5. It comes with some spicy sauce on the side. It came super hot but once it cooled down it very delicious.

WahhTee-friedrice

Beef Fried Rice ($8) uses jasmine rice the dish was quite bland by itself, but with the addition of some curry, it tastes pretty good.

WahhTee-salad

The fried rice came with a mini salad with spicy sauce.

WahhTee-shrimpcurry

Shrimp Curry ($8) we didn’t get the rice to do with this since we had the fried rice already, so we ate it together.

Overall, the dishes were very cheap and affordable. The noodle dishes and salads are pretty darn delicious! This passed my mothers taste test, so it must be good.

Wahh Tee Burmese Restaurant on Urbanspoon

As our first meal in Macau for Burmese food was a disappointment, we were very determined to find some real authentic Burmese noodles. We found Estabelecimento de comidas ‘hin kei to fill our cravings.

This place was packed at night for dinner. Mostly locals have heard of this place.

Malt Vita Soy in glass bottles is so much better than the ones in cartons.

Deep-Fried Intestines were very addictive and crunchy! I would order plates and plates of these if I could.

There are peppers on the table that you can add to your dishes!

They also have raw onions in hot sauce. It’s very very hot, but its really good. I was surprised.

Dry noodles with shredded chicken was also a very flavourful dish! Really simple, but really good!

Mohinga has noodles in a fish based soup with fried items on top. It was really good here! It’s a very traditional breakfast item in Burma.

This is another noodle and soup dish, but it has pork instead. It was also really well made!

Coconut Chicken Noodle in Soup was also great, except for the bones in the chicken.

Overall, it was a great last meal in Macau for Burmese Food. My relatives were happy that we were able to find very authentic Burmese food. If only there was food like this in Vancouver.

We arrived in Macau for a 2 day trip. It’s not very far from Hong Kong and people call it the “Vegas” of Hong Kong. There are tons of Casinos and a lot of rich history in their historical buildings.

We met up with some relatives and headed to Restaurante Birmanes Nga Heong. They took us here since my Grandpa really wanted some Burmese noodles.

There are 2 floors to the restaurant. The interior is nothing special, just a regular cafe.

Soy Bean Milk is one of their specialties. They make it themselves and does have more of a gritty texture.

Can of Coke No matter where you go in the world, there will always be Coke!

Fried Samosa  were OK, but it’s not a good as Indian Samosas.

Fried Spring Rolls was very crunchy, but the skin was more thick than normal.

Fish Soup Noodle has fried bean crackers on top to give it added texture.

Coconut Chicken Noodle in Soup has pieces of chicken with bone and fried Chinese donuts.

Cold Stirred Noodle in Burmese Style was OK, but it wasn’t what my Grandpa and parents were looking for.

Overall, the food was OK, but not super authentic and delicious tasting.
