RomanJ here! Abbytizer and I decided to try out probably one of the only parfait bars in South Vancouver called, “Dot. Desserts”. The desert bar is somewhat hidden since the sign outside the dessert bar states “bubble house”, which is confusing for first time comers. The “Dot. Desserts” is only recognizable with their small sidewalk sign.

Dot. Desserts is a small dessert bar, with high 4 high tables and somewhat dim lighting. It has nicely displaced framed pictures on the wall. Plus, its a nice place to bring a date.

I ordered the Strawberry parfait, while Abbytizer ordered the Espresso parfait.

The Strawberry Parfait ($6.88) is delicious. The parfait consists of freshly cut strawberries on top of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, covered with whip cream and streaked strawberry sauce. The middle of the parfait consists of more ice cream with Vector Cereal (or could be corn flakes), adding a crunch to each every flavorful bit. At the bottom of the parfait is a sponge cake covered with mixture of melted ice cream and strawberry sauce. The Strawberry is outstanding and will fulfill anyone’s parfait cravings.

Abbytizer had the Espresso parfait, is made of chocolate moose, vanilla ice cream, with chocolate sauce on top. In the middle, sponge cake, a layer of cereal, chocolate sauce, mixed with more ice cream and espresso of course. The Espresso parfait was also delicious. The mixtures of flavors really melted together well.

Overall, we liked the parfaits at Dot. Desserts. They have variety of flavors to choose from.  We’ll definitely come back to try out the other flavors.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Reasonably priced
  • They offer more than just parfaits: crepes, slush & milk tea drinks and subs

BusanGirl was feeling super hungry, so we headed to Midam Rice Cake Cafe. I’ve never heard of this place because its hidden in Korean Town. It is mostly known to the Korean community. If you are not Korean, you should find a Korean person to help you order and suggest items for you to eat.

Any Korean restaurant that I go to, I always bring one of my Korean friends to help me…or else I would be so lost.

Midam Rice Cake Cafe is located right beside Han Nam Mart (NOT H Mart).

They specialize in food with Korean Rice Cakes. From desserts to main dishes.

The inside of this place is very comfortable and has a traditional Korean feel to it. The music of this cafe changes 3 times during the day. In the afternoon, they play traditional Korean music with Gayagum. Near 5pm, they play kpop and then at night it basically becomes a bar and has louder music.

Most tables fit 4 people and its a great place to study or have chats with friends. Not too many people know about this place so it’s really good to study at.

We got tea in this super cool looking cup.

This is comprised of ice, milk, peanut rice cake, red beans and vanilla ice cream. Imagine this as the Korean version of Chinese Shaved Ice.

The best way to eat this is to try to get a bit of everything on your spoon, or you could mix it all together.

My main thing that I wanted to do was drink tea, so I ordered kukwahcha (chrysanthemum) tea ($4.99). The chrysanthemum tea has a very strange taste to it but I really could not pin point what this flavour is.

The tea cups are SO cute, they are double layered so it keeps you tea hot for longer. The design prevents the loss of heat and lowers that rate.

BusanGirl ordered the Bulgogi vegetable in hot pot . The hot pot has a very nice savory broth. The quality of their bulgogi was very poor and you know it’s not the best quality.

The rice that comes with the hot pot is a mixture of wild rice and white rice, thus the light purple appearance.

BusanGirl’s meal also came with 3 side dishes – kimchi, pickled chives and black beans.

I found ordering here was super hard because the different types of desserts are not always available. I was so confused that I just let BusanGirl do all the ordering. Even though there is english on the menu, it is still very confusing. I still look back at the menu and I really have no idea how to navigate it.

Midam Rice Cake Cafe is the place to go when you want drink and snacks. There is really no pressure and you can basically spend hours here without being shooed away.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Free Parking in the front
  • Servers may not be very fluent in english (best to bring a Korean friend)
  • Not all desserts are available…you must ask server
  • Most items under $10
  • Quality food is so-so

PinappleBun sent me on a trek to grab some take out from CheeseCake Etc. The last time I went here, it was about a year or so ago. A lot has changed since then, their shop use to just be one restaurant but now it has expanded and has an additional dining area. CheeseCake Etc sells NY style cheese cake, which basically there is no graham cracker base.

Looking at their menu, they do not have a large selection of cheesecake. Mostly drinks and a few combinations of desserts and bread.

I came here just for a whole cheesecake to take out. There are not a lot of options…just the original cheesecake ($26), chocolate cheesecake ($31) and a tub of strawberry sauce ($7).  I asked the cashier how many slices a whole cheese cake has, and he answered saying about 8. I did  bit of calculations and realized it’s not a bad deal at all! You save about $11.

We got the original cheesecake and the tub of strawberry sauce ($33). You have to keep this frozen on order to get a nice looking slice from the cake. If it is half thawed, it will give you can ugly looking slice.

The cheesecake us good with strawberries, it gives you more of a sweet taste and other textures.

If you don’t have a large appetite, you will probably cut smaller pieces and get more than 8 slices. It’s been a few days and we still have this still in our fridge! Cheesecake for breakfast…lunch or dinner. haha.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Pay parking on adjacent roads
  • Lots of seating
  • Good simple cheesecake
  • Limited choices on menu

I went to Michi Waffle with a few friends but I was a bit too full for dinner to enjoy their amazing waffles. So, I got some tea instead.

I ordered the Premium Macha . I like to buy things blindly, what can’t be exciting about something that starts with premium. This tea is made with real macha, even though it does look a bit milky at the top, it’s just the foam from mixing it. Like most teas that come without sugar, it was quite bitter and strong, which is usual for green teas. They even give you a bit of red bean jelly thing. It works well to counter act the bitterness of the tea.

I always come here with friends just to chill when theres nothing else to do on Robson, plus we are pretty asian, so we enjoy our teas and dessert. We prefer this place over the other places like Capstone Tea House.

The ambiance of Michi Waffle and Espresso Bar is the perfect place to have a conversation. If you go there on a date or a meeting, it will leave a lasting impression.

Since Cumpari’s is close to where I usually hang out, so here we are again! Check out my review from  Visit #1

Since CanuckGirl and I wandered off from a party, we decided to take a quick trip to Cumpari’s for a late night snack.

CanuckGirl grabbed a small gelato with 2 flavours – pistachio and white chocolate.

I got this Tubular cookie with nutella and nuts ($3). I really wanted a churro but they ran out….so I had to settle with this..I thought it was some sort of profiterole, but it was hard. I’m not sure if it has a name (the staff didn’t even have a name for it). It’s basically a cookie with filling inside.

Craving italian pastries during the night but too lazy to drive to Vancouver or Richmond? Get your fix here, but it is slightly pricey.

THIS IS THE BEST INFORMATION I HAVE EVEN GIVEN YOU. This may be interesting to some … or maybe not.

I went to Starbucks a few steps away from work and started talking to the cashier about holiday drinks. Since there is obviously no more holidays promotions promoting the drinks…I thought why not just ask them if they can make me something.

To my surprise, they had enough ingredients left to make me a carmel brulee latte!

It also turn out, they make Peppermint Mocha’s all year round!

I’m excited! Are you excited?! Seriously, what is cooler than having a holiday drink in the summer?

In the event you may think I am lying, go to Seymour and Dunsmuir street Starbucks to order yourself one!

I was surprising M at work and well… I went too early so I stopped off at Purdy’s to take a look.

2 things I love from Purdy’s:

  • HedgeHogs
  • Ice Cream Bar

Since I love nuts ( no pun intended), I went ahead to get the Ice Cream bar, I got it with milk chocolate and nuts. There are alternatives to the chocolate like white chocolate. Also, If you are feeling like a kid again, get sprinkles!

I wanted to take a photo of what it looked like on the inside, but I devoured it all…and then soon after dropped the rest on my jacket 🙁

I didn’t mind because I already ate the chocolate and nut coating 🙂

To celebrate a bunch of us working in Downtown, Mandu, NotFauna and I went to Cafe Medina. We went in the middle of the day at 1pm to get some lunch. Since we had 3 people, it was hard to sit us down because of the busy lunch rush. After 40 minutes of waiting, a table cleared up. If you have a lunch time limit of 1 hour, it’s probably best to come alone or in 2s.Caf Much much faster.

Cafe Medina has drinks (right side of menu) and Breakfast/Lunch (right side of menu).

I had a pot of green tea ($3.00). It came in a kettle and a cute little cup and saucer. The tea was very light and refreshing, so it was a perfect pick-me-up for the middle of the day. I’m trying to stray off of coffee because having too much coffee doesn’t work well for my digestive system.

Mandu ordered the Cappuccino.

NotFauna saw that Lavender Lattes ($3.60) were popular, so she decided to get one as well. The Lavender taste is very subtle in the latte. It took her a while to figure out if it was a regular latte or a lavender latte.

Mandu ordered the Fricasse ($16), which has 2 fried eggs, braised short ribs, roasted potatoes, caramelized onions, arugula, applewood cheddar and a side of grilled foccacia. If you are looking for a light lunch/breakfast, this may not be the dish for you. Under the arugula and eggs lie the heavy potatoes and short ribs. Mandu was very satisfied with this dish because she was really hungry and wanted a dish that had a lot of food.

NotFauna ordered the Les Merguez ($15), which is flat bread wrapped roasted merguez sausage, baba ganoush, haloumi cheese, grilled eggplant, and tabbouleh. We tried asking the waiter how to pronounce this dish, but we epically failed and looked like fools.

I ordered the La Salade de Crevette ($14). This salad has Crisp romaine lettuce, wild shrimp, aji parmesan dressing, croutons and lime. I was looking for a light lunch, so the salad was perfect. I really liked the parmesan dressing, it gave a little bit of saltiness to the dish which was yummy.

I also ordered the Waffle ($3.15) + Milk Chocolate Lavender Topping (+$1). The waffles are well made and they come with a variety of topping to choose from.

Words of Wisdom:

  • 2 hour free parking at Tinsel Town (I know its for patrons…but FREE parking! I break rules)
  • Waffles and lavender lattes are popular
  • Best to go in 2s for quick seating

Last time I visited here for just tea. This time I went with InsecureGirl and  KoreanGirl to revist this place to check out more of what they had to offer.

We got one of the Oriental Style Combo for 2 ( $21.95). We got to choose from 1 coffee, 1 tea, 2 desserts, and a fry combo. We weren’t in a coffee mood, so we paid an additional $1 for another tea.

For our first tea, we got Jasmine Green Tea.

We got their Leisure Fruit Tea. It was really sour for our first cup. All 3 of us were not use to fruity teas since we only have the usual chinese teas at home. If you like fruity teas, you will probably like it because it has real fruits inside – kiwis, pineapples, apples, etc.

What we did after the tea was done, was eat the fruit!

We got the fruit crepe. It had canned peaches, whipped cream and maple syrup. all this was wrapped up in a nice thin crepe.

The crepe was pretty good but one thing we all didn’t like about it was the additional maple syrup. This made it really sweet and didn’t really mesh well with the whipped cream.

The fry combo we got had tofu, fish cake, and chicken. THere is also some spicy sauce on the side to dip. This was an average dish.

Lastly, we had the blueberry pie. This was a very disappointing dessert. It was in a little pie tart with cooked and sugared blueberries and a bit of whipped cream. I use to bake a lot and I can tell this tart shell was from the store frozen. If you look carefully, the tart is even burned.

Overall, this was a bad dessert, everything pre-made and slapped together. It looked nothing like the image on the menu.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Lots of variety of teas
  • Dessert are a hit or a miss
  • Parking in the back

Bubble Fruity is an authentic HK dessert shop in Richmond. I have always been craving for good Mango sago cream, but I could never find it in BC… until now.

They are quite popular. We asked the owners if they would ever consider opening a shop in Burnaby or in Vancouver, they said they were way too busy. Bubble Fruity is a mom and pop store, so only the owners run this place.

They serve snack and are most famous for their authentic Sago cream desserts.

PinappleBun ordered the Durian Sago Cream ($4). This had basil seeds and sago. The black bacteria looking things are te basil seeds, they may seem scary, but it’s delicious.

PinappleBun said it has a very fresh durian taste and smell. She loved it!

If you are not a durian fan, I suggest you stay away from this. If you ARE a durian fan, you MUST get this.

VWboy and I both had the Mango Flavour Sago Cream ($4). It has a really strong favour of mango, which is <3 ! It is also served with sago and basil seed.

When I visited Hong Kong a few years ago, I would love to go out to have dessert just like this. It’s amazing that a place in Richmond can have such authentic HK Desserts!

Of course this was SO good that we had to bring it back home for our parents to try.

We ordered:

  • Green Bean Soup
  • Sago Cream with coconut milk
  • Black Sesame Paste
  • Red Bean Soup
  • Durian Sago Cream
  • Mango Sago Cream
  • Papaya almond soup

Glutinous Purple Rice Soup

Mango Sago Cream

Papaya Almond Soup

Green Bean Soup

When we took out the items, they were not as good as having it in the store. You get much less and the temperature changes as well. We live in Burnaby and the restaurant is in Richmond. So, we basically left it in the car for about 45 mins.

Overall, the desserts were amazing and very cheap!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Mango Sago Cream and Durian Sago Cream are highly popular
  • Limited free street parking, mostly pay parking
  • Cheap

salle de thé Tea Room is a tea, dessert, and wine place in Richmond.

Insecuregirl and I bought 4 coupons from IndulgeLiving to go to salle de thé Tea Room. We were really glad we got the coupons because our bill turned out to be quite steep. The coupons were $6 for $12 worth of food. We took CanuckGirl, FragileBoy and M with us to a little adventure down to Richmond.

InsecureGirl, FragileBoy and I ordered 3 pots of teas. They were $7 each. Their teas are quite unique and they do have a large selection. If you do have a particular taste you like for teas, you can ask them questions and they can show you which teas are good. $7 can be quite expensive for a small pot of tea, but you also get refills.

They also give you a small cup of honey if you like honey in your tea.

M ordered this blueberry and lychee type of drink. I forgot what the name was, but it was quite good and had nice balance of flavour between the blueberries and lychee.

We all shared the match cheesecake. This was really delicious! The green tea taste was amazing and it was not too bitter. Just perfect !

We ordered 2 chocolate fondues and I think they were about $15 each.

The fondue did take sometime to arrive at our table. I really couldn’t figure out why since it can’t be so hard to prepare. One of my friends commented by saying they saw one of the workers go out to buy ingredients. I can not confirm if this was true or not, but if this is so, it’s quite sad.

The items that they give you to dunk are:

  • marshmallows
  • pretzels
  • dried apricots
  • strawberries
  • banana
  • apple

The chocolate sauce for the fondue was done quite poorly. It was really sweet and did not taste like real chocolate at all. It reminded us of chocolate syrup instead and it was not warm. We also looked at the consistency of the chocolate and it did not seem like it was made out of real chocolate since it should eventually harden up.

If you want good fondue, try out Capstone Tea House because it’s cheaper and its all you can eat.

The bill turned out to be $79 and after using the 4 coupons, it ended up to be around $30.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Parking in plaza
  • Do not get the fondue
  • Cakes are good
  • large selection of teas
  • Expensive

Fabo, M, FragileBoy, NotFauna, JoJoCake and I were at Coquitlam Mall looking for Ben & Jerrys…but apparently it disappeared, so to solve our sweet tooth…we decided to get a blizzard. We discovered that they had a new Mini Size of Blizzard which was amazing because I can’t even finish a small size. There is so much Ice cream a person can eat without getting sick.

For $2.69, you can get your own mini sized Blizzard. They have lots of flavours to choose from! But most of they are sweet.

I got the double fudge cookie dough. All chocolate lovers should get this one! M had the French Silk Pie but he got sick of his and started eating mine and wouldn’t give it back because the double fudge cookie dough was better.

Since my hand can be large or small….I put the mini Blizzard near my phone so you know the approx size. The mini Blizzard is quite a good size for ice cream. Good for those on a semi-diet .

Dragon Ball Tea House is a popular bubble tea place in Vancouver. They serve milky teas, slushes, real fruit, powder, and many other types of customizable bubble teas. If you are an indecisive person, you will be totally confused when they ask you if you want your drink as a milk or slush, or with pearls. They throw so many options at you, so I totally got lost.

The interior is not very big, so during busy times its hard to fit a large group of people.

Most of the drinks range from $3 – $3.50. If you add pearls or anything extra, it’s $0.50.

What we ordered:

  • Supreme Milk Tea: Just regular milk tea, nothing too “supreme” about it.
  • Passionfruit Black Tea w/ pearls: FragileBoy said the pearls were a bit too soft and chewy
  • Fresh papaya milk: I loved it. It had real papaya, so I was super happy! I hate the powdered stuff.
  • Green Tea Ice Cream: Had a good taste to it. If you like green tea ice cream, you’d probably like this too.

There is something about this washroom key that cracks me up. Can you see what it is? (Scroll down to see answer)

Frappe Bliss serves up flavoured shaved ice at Aberdeen Mall. The flavours can range from Mango to Peanut. This little kiosk is actually owned by Fairchild. Isn’t that interesting? It’s like they practically own most of everything in the mall. Frappe Bliss has moved around in many locations in the food court, but they currently reside between the Mambo Cafe and the Anime store.

Frappe Bliss was actually my first job that I ever had. I was so glad the job didn’t last long because as an Chinese person who can’t speak Cantonese or Mandarin, it was a HARD job! It was like trying to guess what people were trying to order. It makes you think, why they even hired me in the first place.

If you are an indecisive person, you can choose from the items on the left or you can customize your own by choosing the flavour of ice and toppings.

They first take a block of flavoured ice and put it in the ice shredding machine to turn the block of ice into the shaved ice you know and perhaps love! If you compact all the shaved ice that you get….it comes out to be  less than a cup of liquid. 🙁

I ordered the Peanut Iceburg ($3.60). It has peanut ice, chocolate sauce, and peanuts. This was pretty gross. The chocolate sauce was too sweet, and the peanut ice didn’t taste very peanut like. Three years ago, they had this amazing peanut sauce which you could have added, but I guess they stopped making it. I wasn’t satisfied with it. After eating this I wanted some frozen yogurt.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Popular ice flavours – Strawberry, Mango, yogurt
  • Best to order fruit toppings

I went to Berry Good with my food buddies – SFUPretender and FinanceGirl. Berry Good serves desserts, coffee, and tea. Their specialty is Japanese and Korean inspired desserts. Perhaps the owners are Korean and Japanese.

They are located in Richmond near Garden City Road. The location is slightly hidden in a plaza, so you may want to google it before you go.

The interior is small and cozy. Since it is getting close to Christmas, they even put up a small tree.

Most of their daily desserts are displayed near the cashier. You have to go look at them before you order. They have about 8 cakes on display. Not a large selection, but you know they put effort and care into their desserts by keeping the quantity low.

They offer combos with a dessert and drink from $6- $9. These drink can range from cold and hot teas and coffees.

SFUPretender ordered the Raspbery Chocolate mousse. The raspberry chocolate mousse is layered within chocolate cake. I tried a bit of it and it was ok.

FinanceGirl had the White Chocolate Cheesecake. It was really good. it was on top of a bed of oreo cookies. The cheesecake was very flavourful and rich. I would recommend people getting this.

I got the green tea mousse cake. The bottom was made out of vanilla cake, then green tea mousse, red beans, and green tea jelly on top. I originally thought the red beans would be through out the cake, but as I was eating it, it was only on the outside. If you hate red beans, there really isn’t that much, so don’t be scared by it. The green tea mousse seems to be a popular choice at Berry Good. It’s unique!

After we finished our dessert, the restaurant became packed. All the tables were full an everyone seemed like they were enjoying the desserts. There were lots of couples too.

Excellent Tofu and Snack LTD. looks pretty sketchy from the outside but they make some amazing tofu dessert. Perfect for a snack or after dinner dessert….or if you are a tofu fanatic…you would just come here anytime.

The inside looks like a typically crappy asian place. Plain decor, but if you can put that all aside, you should have an amazing tofu experience.

Their menu has pictures so you know what you are going to get.

They also have another menu with english and chinese, but I avoided it because I was afraid I would order the wrong thing. Sometimes I wish I could read Chinese.

SFUPretender and FinanceGirl both got the Soy Pudding with pearls ($3.50). It was basically tofu pudding topped with a good amount of pearls. You can sweeten up with their syrups – liquid sugar or liquid ginger sugar. If you are unsure which one you prefer, try it before you pour it all over your tofu dessert.

The syrups can be found in these tubes around the restaurant.

I ordered the tofu pudding with mixed fruit with light milk ($4). The fruits are the typical fruit that come from cans and are preserved in syrup.

I love this place because they make all their tofu from scratch and it smells heavenly! When I was walking to the washroom, you can really smell the soy beans.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Parking in the parking lot, but it’s usually full during peak hours. Alternative parking at Aberdeen Mall or Parker Place.
  • Tofu dessert is a must!
  • Really inexpensive, should cost you less than $5

Thomas Haas is famous for his amazing chocolate creations. From cakes, to pastries, to chocolates…they are just amazing. I’ve got the chance to try the North Vancouver location, but not Kits until now.

FinanceGirl and SFUPretender got bored and decided to come here to just chill and talk.

Walking inside, you feel this little place is very very cozy. The ceiling reminded my of a honey comb. Even Thomas Haas was in the restaurant as well!

Many different types of cakes.

Lots of little chocolates.

A variety of pastries.

They even serve sandwiches!

Since it is te holiday season, there are new creations for Christmas!

FinanceGirl got the Milk Chocolate Passionfruit ($5.50), it contained light milk chocolate mousse, refreshing passionfruit cream, soft almond cake and crispy hazelnut wafer. I think this was everyones’ favorite pick since it had chocolate mousse.

I got a latte ($3.50)and Fresh Fruit Galette ($5.50). What I liked about the Galette was how easy it could be cut without falling apart. None of the toppings fell off or was too hard to cut off. I found this to be a healthier alternative to the rich chocolate cakes!

Crispy Chocolate Raspberry ($5.50), it contained dark Manjari chocolate-raspberry mousse, light vanilla Bavarian, chocolate sacher cake, and crispy hazelnut wafer.

And so with our drinks and cakes, we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon!

Sweet Revenge is always the place to be when you want to be transported into a victorian setting.  At Sweet Revenge you will be spoiled by the different types of desserts and beverages.

This place is pretty dark from the outside, so I always manage to accidentally walk past without noticing.

Once you walk inside, you know what type of Victorian setting I am talking about. It is covered in ornate paintings, red walls, fireplace and lighting. It is a very small space, so big groups are a no no unless you can get a reservation.

MedicalGiraffe and I shared a Medium London Fog ( Earl Grey Tea and Vanilla Syrup). You can customize your London Fog with any type of tea and syrup they have. We thought it would be best to stick with the original London Fog.

You get to enjoy their teas in nice little cup and saucers.

I got the apple pie ($6.35). It can be served hot or cold. On the side you will also get sliced strawberries and whipped cream. I really didn’t like the apple pie. It was a bit sweet and didn’t taste as good as it should of. Perhaps more cinnamon? I usually can finish a whole dessert but I left about 1/4 of it.

MedicalGiraffe has the chocolat pudding cake ($6.35). This I believe is the best thing on the menu. It was rich and chocolaty, but not too too sweet. Perfect!

We also added sides of ice cream with our desserts. I think it was either $1.00 or $1.50 more. I don’t think it was worth getting a side of ice cream, but it really depends which dessert you get. We thought sometimes it was good to have a taste of ice cream to break the constant taste of the cakes.
