basho-basho

I came with my family to indulge in Basho’s delicious sweet treats. Previously, I  came here with friends and it has always been a positive experience. The wait for a table was quite a while for a group of 5, but if you are able to endure a little bit of a wait or some here early, you’ll love this cozy cafe.

basho-tea-time

Sitting here with matcha lattes ($3.75) and a few treats that range from $1 to $3.

basho-matcha

It’s a bit bitter without sugar, so you can add some to sweeten it up for taste.

basho-treats

Sesame brownie, red bean mochi, nut mochi, chocolate mochi are some treats they offer.

Basho-Earl-Grey

Earl Grey Tea ($2.85) and sesame brownie is what my sister ordered. The tea comes already steeped so you don’t have the bag sitting in it getting stronger and stronger.

basho-scone

Smoked Cheddar and Chive Scone was an item on the counter and it was SO good and addictive. I would highly recommend getting this.

Basho-pulled-pork

Teri Pulled Pork with lunch set ($8 +$3) the pulled pork is delicious and tender and it comes over rice with a few veggies. Alternatively, you can get it as a salad. With the lunch set addition, you get soup, mini sweets, and a coup of tea. It was really good.

Basho-tuna-tataki

Tuna Tataki with lunch set ($9.5 +$3) is my favourite. It’s a light meal, healthy, and the perfect amount for a meal. The 3 treats are worth it too.

Basho-matcha

Overall, all the baked treats were good and none of them disappointed. It’s a cute cafe to just chill and catch up with friends over drinks and nibbles. Highly recommend this cafe!

PappaRoti-sign

PappaRoti has made its way to Vancouver as the first location in Canada. The first store opened up in Malaysia in 2003 selling their signature roti buns. It was a hit and now they have over 400 locations around the world.

Their signature item is the roti bun, which has a sweet caramelized coffee cream on top. It is best paired with tea or coffee.

KoreanGirl and I have been on search for Coffee Buns in Vancouver. Before coming to PappaRoti, we had some at Coffee Bun and Cafe Joie.

PappaRoti-inner

PappaRoti was quite busy during the night at 7pm. It got increasingly busy as the night went on. A lot of people were eating catching up with friends, having a meeting or doing homework.

PappaRoti-menu

Their menu has coffee, tea, frappes, and smoothies.

PappaRoti-bun

Original Bun ($3.65) is twice baked and coated with their caramel coffee cream topping. The top was crispy and the inside was light and fluffy. Eat it right when it comes out of the oven because that is the best.

PappaRoti-dry-cappuccino

Dry Cappuccino ($3.50) is my favourite type of cappuccino as it has more foam. I don’t like it with too much milk. The coffee they use is created by JJ Bean, which I was surprised as PappaRotti is a chain. I thought it would be pretty standardized.

PappaRoti-milk-tea

KoreanGirl ordered a Milk Tea, but whatever tea they used made it taste a bit weird.

PappaRoti-coffee

They don’t have a large variety for food, but people mostly come here for the coffee, tea and coffee buns.

Overall, it’s a nice place to chill. There is lots of seating and the coffee is good.

cafe-joie-outer

It’s about time there is a nice independent cafe near Metrotown. What more do you need than coffee and some yummy pastries with friends. KoreanGirl and I were killing time before dinner, so we headed to Cafe Joie for a snack. The cafe is very close to Metropolis at Metrotown. A few minutes walk and you would never expect a place like this to be in the area.

cafe-joie-inner

The interior is quite beautiful, spacious and adorable. It’s a great place to do some homework or just catch up with some friends.

cafe-joie-bear

Latte is so cute! KoreanGirl was impressed that they took the extra effort to make a little bear on top. The coffee tastes great as they use JJ Bean coffee. I would just come here for the latte art.

cafe-joie-latte

Cappuccino was what I ordered. Nice, strong, and delicious. A definite winner if you want to just slowly sip away and have some pastries with it.

cafe-joie-almond-cookie

Almond cookie was delicious!! I liked the texture and how it was crunchy. I had an obsession with pastries with nuts and almonds. Yum.

cafe-joie-coffee-bun

Original Coffee Bun that they have here was enjoyable! It’s uniformly shaped and has a coffee aroma from the crust on top. KoreanGirl liked this coffee bun the most compared to some other places in town.

cafe-joie-treats

They also have tons of macarons and a few cakes on display too. They also have shaved ice.

Overall, we enjoyed this cafe and would highly recommend it.

Continental-coffee-inner

I was walking down Commercial Drive and I saw Continental Coffee House, so I decided to stop here and grab a coffee. It was cool to see an independent coffee joint in the neighbourhood. The place was packed in the middle of the day with people having meeting, people hanging out with friends, and people doing homework. It’s been around for a long time since 1979. They have been voted one of the best independent coffee shop in Vancouver.

There is also a second location on Main Street, that opened on December 2012.

Cappuccino was what I ordered. It was good coffee with a rice strong flavour.

I’ll definitely be back.

aroma-seats

M, Fabo and I were taking a very long stroll to the movie theatres near Eglinton. It took us a while to figure out its a long walk from Bloor and Younge. We took a break half way and went to Aroma Espresso Bar to have a drink.

We have seen several Aroma Espresso Bars around town. Aroma Espresso Bar actually first opened in Jerusalem in 1994, but it wasn’t until 2007 when the first Canadian store opened in Toronto in the Annex area.

aroma-inner

It was a Sunday afternoon and this place was busy. They serve coffee, sandwiches, pastries, salads, and even breakfast.

aroma-coffee-cup

Brewed coffee ($1.70) is made with their own house-blend of beans. It comes with a piece of milk chocolate.

aroma-latte

Cappuccino ($3.95) is made with a short shot of espresso, blended with steamed milk, and topped with froth. It also comes with a piece of chocolate.

aroma-smoothie

Mango Smoothie ($4.85) is apparently made with 100% real fruit. M thought it was ok, pretty average. But it was nice that it came with a piece of chocolate too.

Overall, it a nice place to stop by for a drink. We saw some people study and some other people catching up over drinks.

darkhorse-cup

When exploring Toronto, always ask the locals where to go. Dark Horse Espresso Bar popped up in that list and we were on our way! We like a good cup of coffee and Starbucks or Tim Hortons wasn’t going to cut it.

There are 4 locations of Dark House all around Downtown Toronto. We went to the location on Queen West. A lot of people have said this is the best coffee in Toronto. Huffington Post says its a great place to do some work. Also on BlogTO, best cafe on the West Side.

darkhorse-inner

The interior was narrow and had seats along the wall and a bit more in the back.

darkhorse-menu

They have a good variety of coffee. Even French Presses and Pour Overs if you have time to stick around. I find that it’s a nice place to hangout with friends.

darkhorse-barista

Once you order at the counter, you wait for your beverage to be created by their amazing baristas. I love hearing the sound of milk being steamed.

darkhorse-cappucino

Cappuccino ($3.33) was delicious. It had a nice bold espresso flavour with the lovely heart on top.

The place was packed on a weekend, but some tables freed up quite quickly.

moii-cafe-outer

Right under the Vancity Credit Union on Cambie and Broadway is Moii Cafe. They have actually been around for a few years. It’s a popular spot among university students as it has the perfect atmosphere to study, plus the right type of food to keep the brain fueled. Ok, not really, but who doesn’t like crepes.

moii-cafe-inner

The interior is quite cozy and homey. There’s a good amount of space to study alone of with friends. As for me and Magz, we came here for a quick bite of lunch and to chit-chat about work and life.

moii-cafe-crepe-menu

They offer a variety of savoury and sweet crepes. The menu is a little bit misleading because a few items aren’t available due to seasonality.

moii-cafe-drink-menu

There’s also a large wall of different drinks. There’s hot drink and cold drinks available.

moii-cafe-honey-greentea

Cold Honey Green Tea ($3.75) is pretty standard drink, i felt this was a tad sweet, but it’s a good pairing with a savoury crepe to balance it out.

moii-cafe-lychee-tea

Cold Lychee Green Tea ($3.75) has a very distinct lychee taste. Very good if you like the taste of sweet lychee.

moii-cafe-savoury

Terimayo Crepe ($9.50) has chicken, bonito takes, cheese, okonomi sauce, pepper, mayo and wasabi. It’s not spicy at all. It’s a pretty good crepe. We enjoyed it.

moii-cafe-cheesecake-crepe

Cheesecake crepe ($8.50) comes with ice cream on the side.  The crepe has a slice of cheesecake inside wrapped in the crepe and topped with honey and powdered sugar. The cheese cake isn’t consistent inside as it is cut up into slices. It tasted ok, but we prefer the savoury crepe.

Overall, it’s a nice spot to hangout during the day with friends. They have wifi available too.

coming-home-outer

I’ve been growing tired of going to the same ol’ places for brunch in Burnaby, so I looked into New Westminster if they had anything interesting. After much Googling, I stumbled upon Coming Home Cafe. It looked like a cute place and was rated quite highly. How have I not heard of this place? Their website even has a web cam so people can see if it’s busy or not.

I decided to take a chance and bring M and Scarface with me.

coming-home-inner

Their menu is on the chalk board and everything is under $10. The interior really isn’t impressive at all, it’s more like an old diner where nothing matches or is from a thrift store. It really has that homey vibe because as a kid, I remember a lot of our cups and plates didn’t match.

coming-home-coffee

Kicking Horse Coffee ($2.75) and its self serve. You grab the mug from their shelves and begin pouring the coffee and mixing in your milk and sugar. Just like home.

You also get a maximum of 2 refills, but usually people don’t need more than 3.

coming-home-breakfast

The Uptown ($8.50) comes with 2 egg, toast, choice of meat and hashbrowns. I got rye bread, sausage, sunny side up eggs, and the Hashbrowns. It was simple and good just like a traditional breakfast.

coming-home-kickass-benny

Kick Ass Benny with side of hashbrowns ($9+ $3) has black forest ham, poached eggs and fresh Hollandaise sauce on top of a cheese scone. There’s no english muffin here, it’s the cheese scone that rocks it.

Overall, the place is very homey and the owners are very nice. You get good traditional breakfast foods.

Starbucks-Oprah-Chai-Latte-poster

Oprah Chai Tea latte was just introduced at Starbucks for a limited time. When I first heard about this, I was very confused why there was a drink named after Oprah.

The drink was created in partnership with Oprah Winfrey and Teavana teaologists to create the distinctive chai blend. Each beverage purchased, $0.25 is donated back to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation to help benefit youth education.

As there was a Starbucks right below the office, I might as well wander downstairs to try it out.

Starbucks-Oprah-Chai-Latte-menu

Here are the prices at Main and Terminal location in Vancouver.

  • Tall – $3.85
  • Grande – $4.55
  • Venti – $4.95

They are the same prices for Oprah Chai Tea Latte and Ice Oprah Chair Tea Latte.

Starbucks-Oprah-Chai-Latte-cup

Oprah Chai Tea Latte (Tall – $3.65) has a spicy chai blend of cinnamon, black tea and rooibos, lightly sweetened and finished with steamed milk.

I’m not a usual Chai tea drinker but I thought it tasted fine. Nothing too special.

coffee-bun-sing

The Coffee Bun is located in Coquitlam in Henderson Mall. This is their second location as their original one is in North Vancouver. KoreanGirl and I drove past it and were curious about this place, so after we had lunch somewhere else, we came here for a coffee and some snacks.

coffee-bun-inner

The space is quite spacious with lots of tables. Perfect for studying or a good place to hang out with friends. The tables are spaced out far apart, so you aren’t up close to others.

coffee-bun-iced-coffee

Iced Coffee was what KoreanGirl ordered. It was a hot day, so that made sense. The coffee is made with Kicking Horse coffee beans.

coffee-bun-kicking-horse-coffee

Hot Cappuccino is also made with Kicking Horse coffee beans. It was really hot, but after it cooled down it tasted good. It was made by a machine, so it doesn’t have that strong taste of espresso.

coffee-bun-coffee-bun

The coffee bun is baked with a coffee cream on top to create the aromatic coffee crust on top of the bun. There are 10 flavours of filling for the buns.

  • Original Plain (filled with butter)
  • Cream Cheese (filled with cream cheese)
  • Custard Chouz (filled with soft vanilla cream)
  • chocolate (filled with chocolate chips)
  • red bean (filled with red bean)
  • garlic (topped with coffee and herbs)
  • cinnamon (topped with cinnamon)
  • pumpkin (filled with sweet pumpkin)
  • ice cream (sandwiched with ice cream)
  • coffee bun sandwich (sandwiched with ham and cheese)

Depending on the location, the fillings and options can vary.

The original plain coffee bun came right out of the oven and was SO GOOD. The are fresh every 30 minutes, so I would definitely wait till the new batch comes out. The crust is really good and the little bit of butter inside pairs nicely.

coffee-bun-cream-cheese

Cream Cheese Coffee bun was ok. This one was got wasn’t heated up, so it was a little big unsatisfactory. We thought they would heat this up a little bit.

coffee-bun-custard

Custard Coffee bun is filled with the custard cream inside. If you have a slight sweet tooth, then this is what you might enjoy. It’s like a cream puff but inside a coffee bun.

coffee-bun-toast

Strawberry and ice cream toast was another item they had for their more dessert-like options. They also have Korean shaved ice and belgian waffles too. The strawberries were frozen and sliced. We weren’t impressed with this.

Overall, a cup of coffee and a fresh coffee bun is best to be ordered.

pink-sugar-cafe-inner

We came here around 11:30am and it wasn’t packed at all. When it got closer to 12:30pm, thats when it gets quite busy.

pink-sugar-cafe-drink-menu

If you come early enough to catch their early bird special, you get a free upgrade to any item on their drink menu. Usually you would get house coffee or tea with your lunch set. This is only applicable till 11am. If you are looking for an early lunch, it’s a good deal. But, if you don’t want to wake up early on the weekend, you won’t miss out too much.

People usually come here for their lunch sets anyways.

pink-sugar-cafe-lunch-set

Japanese Lunch Special changes every day. You never know what they are going to feature. Some people call in ahead of time to see what they are serving as their feature.

We came when they had ginger pork. It also comes with miso soup, chawan mushi, salad, rice and a custard dessert. What I liked about this is that you get a little taste of everything and not overwhelmed by one dish for lunch.

pink-sugar-cafe-ginger-beef

Ginger Pork that was part of the set was delicious and very aromatic and full of flavour. The slices were quite large.

pink-sugar-cafe-salad

The salad has lettuce. onion, tomato, orange and a delicious dressing.

pink-sugar-cafe-chawanmushi

Chawan Mushi is an egg custard and it was silky smooth. Very light and enjoyable. It has a distinct dashi broth taste in this dish and it goes well with the mushrooms and shrimp.

If you’ve been following my blog, you will know I’m on the hunt for some good eggs benny in town. A fellow reader – Joey sent in a recommendation and told me to check out Cafe Zen on Yew. Cafe Zen has been around for over 25 years and is best know for their breakfast. Especially eggs benny.

zen-cafe-coffee

Coffee ($2.59) is required in the morning and I can’t function without it.

zen-cafe-bacon-benny

Whats great about Cafe Zen is that you can mix and match bennies. They just take the higher one of the price.

Peameal Benny ($10.49) on the left and Flo – Benedict on the right. It comes with hashbrowns on the side. It was pretty good.

Bennies can also be ordered singularly so if you only want one, you can get one rather than two.

zen-cafe-yolk

Their poached eggs are uniformly shaped and I ordered mine soft and it came out perfectly soft.

zen-cafe-bacon

Bacon ($3.29) I added a side order of bacon since I really craved it with my eggs benny. The strips are quite big and there are many strips. It’s definitely worth it.

zen-cafe-benny

Here’s another picture of eggs benny.

zen-cafe-lumber

Lumberjack Breakfast ($12.99) comes with your choice of pancakes, french toast, or waffles. Then your pick of  bacon, ham or sausage. You get two eggs, and hashbrowns. The one depicted here is the french toast with sausage.

zen-cafe-waffle

This one is the Lumberjack Breakfast but with Waffles, sausage and soft poached eggs. It’s definitely lots to eat for breakfast. Overall, the food is good and the service is great. This place is busy on the weekends but if you go around 10:30am, you won’t be waiting long. It’s nothing fancy, but it hits the spot. The next time, we came at 6pm and just managed to get a table.

A lot of people love to come here for the crepes. During peak hours, you can see a long line up.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-crepes

We were told the crepes were really good, so we decided to get a few of them. The crepes range from $7 to $12 depending on what you are ordering. We got the chicken crepe ($11.95), Salmon crepe ($11.95) and Berry crepe ($10.50).

Jean-philippe-patisserie-chicken-crepe

Chicken crepe ($11.95) comes with grilled chicken breast, spinach, chipotle sauce, piquillos peppers, swiss cheese and a lot of mayo. The chicken is all hiding inside. It’s not bad at all.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-salmon-crepe

Salmon crepe ($11.95) has caper/dill sauce, smoked salmon, swiss cheese, asparagus, spinach, and pico de gallo. They really don’t skimp out on the salmon. Theres a lot on top. There’s none inside the crepe, but its good enough.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-berry-crepe

Berry Crepe ($10.50) has marinated berries, whipped cream and powdered sugar on top of the crepe. It uses a different crepe batter than the savoury crepes. The marinated berries was quite sour for some reason, but it was still enjoyable. I think I would have been happier with the nutella version but the berries looked good.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-gelato-choice

Besides crepes, they also have gelato. There’s a good amount of flavours.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-gelato

Strawberry gelato scoop came in a cute cup. My little sister sure enjoyed it.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-snacks

Another section of the cafe has cake, snack items and stuff like that. The next day, we had an early start to the grand canyon, so we just decided to grab a few things quickly.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-baked

Croissants, blueberry muffin and a bran muffin. It was decent, but it wasn’t amazing.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-fruit-juice

I got a fruit cup and orange juice. Pretty simple stuff but I didn’t want anything too heavy for breakfast.

Jean-philippe-patisserie-parfait

My little sister got a yogurt parfait, it has granola and fresh berries. It was pretty good since it has both the fruit and granola. A good mix of items.

Bouchon Bakery is located in The Venetian and there are 3 locations inside. It is owned by world renowned chef – Thomas Keller. He is the man behind The French Laundry and Per Se. This was a major reason why my sister wanted to try out this bakery to see if it lived up to the hype.

We came in the early afternoon and sat outside on the patio for some snacks and sun.

Bouchon-Bakery-enter

The entrance to the Bouchon Bakery is through the inside of the hotel.

Bouchon-Bakery-inner

It isn’t large, so it more of a to go place, unless you sit outside on the patio.

Bouchon-Bakery-counter

There’s a bunch of pastries on the counter. From croissants to cookies.

Bouchon-Bakery-fridge

In their display case, they have macarons, eclairs and sandwiches.

Bouchon-Bakery-snack

We grabbed a latte and a mocha. Both of them tasted horrible. The mocha was very sweet and we could not adjust the sweetness because they didn’t know what half sweet meant. We soon realized this was the case because their coffee comes out of a machine with a press of a button rather than made by hand like how its supposed to be.

Same goes with the latte, it didn’t have that personal touch from the barista. Came straight from the machine.

I expected a bit more from them especially with the name behind the bakery.

Bouchon-Bakery-burnt

Ham and cheese croissant was baked in the oven for us after we ordered. It was burnt on the edges but was pretty good. Not as good as Beaucoup in Vancouver.

Bouchon-Bakery-sweet

Chocolate eclair was small but it was pretty good. The coffee macaron was a disappointment. It didn’t have the right texture and it was really chewy.

Bouchon-Bakery-croissant

Overall, I was a bit disappointed in Bouchon Bakery. I can name a few places in Vancouver that are ten times better. Sigh, I had such high hopes. Perhaps I just have higher standards since Vancouver has some pretty amazing bakeries.

coca-cola-vegas-aroundtheworld

It comes on 2 trays. It’s huge. If you are going with a group of people, only order one….or else you will regret it. You only really need a sip since there are 14 flavours to try.

You get pieces of paper with the flavours so you know what you’re tasting. The Inca Kola and Fanta Pineapple were my favourites.

Tray #2 definitely tasted worse than Tray #1.

coca-cola-vegas-cups-flavours

It was a good experience, but there were some good ones and lots of bad flavours. It’s not really tuned to our North American taste buds. This is something your try once…but you probably won’t order it again unless someone else wants it.

Starbucks-vegas

When in Vegas, go to Starbucks. At least that’s what my sisters and I did. She’s really obsessed about getting those collectible Starbucks mugs from different cities around the world. While walking inside Caesars Palace, we found a Starbucks and needed a cool drink to refresh us.

Caesars-Palace-lobby

The Starbucks in Caesars Palace is located to the left of the lobby.

Caesars-Palace-starbucks

The space is quite small, but there are these long long couches to rest for a bit and enjoy your beverage. It’s not a cafe where you can sit for a while.

Another huge difference are the prices. Most tall drinks are $6 and it has a crazy markup. I pay about half the price in Vancouver. My wallet hurt after coming here.

After going to this location, I started looking at the other location’s prices and it can vary from $5 to $6 for tall drinks.

Starbucks-vanilla-macchiato

Vanilla Macchiato was the drink that they are currently advertising. In Canada, they introduced the Maple Macchiato and in the states, they released the Vanilla Macchiato. How different right?

Starbucks-vanilla-macchiato-iced

The Vanilla Macchiato is a multi-layered drink that has steamed milk, espresso, and the sweet drizzle made of brown sugar, butter, vanilla and some salt.

I got my drink in iced form since it was pretty hot outside. The drink was ok, but nothing special.

Starbucks-iced

The other drinks we ordered were iced green tea and iced coffee. Pretty standard stuff. We spent over $20 of 4 tall drinks which sucks. But, it’s on The Strip, so always expect to pay more.
