I live in Burnaby, BC, which is a suburb 30 minutes away from Downtown Vancouver. There is so much to explore in Burnaby as it is quite large. One of my favourite spots to get a great view of the city is from Burnaby Mountain. You can see the Japanese totem poles with the backdrop of the mountains and the rest of the Lower Mainland.

We had the 2018 Ford Explorer Limited for the week to test out and it was a perfect place to test out the car with the amount of hills in the neighbourhood. Check out what we thought of the 2018 Ford Explorer Limited.

Exterior

This full-sized SUV has a new and cleaner look with their new grille and distinct front and rear fascias, as well as LED lighting. With use of LED lighting, it is brighter, durable, lasts longer, and more energy efficient. I really like those lights as its so much easier to see at night.

The grill reminds me of chain link mail or scales of a fish.

There are 5 new wheel option if you want to customize it to suit your style. The one of this vehicle is the 20″ premium lustre nickel-painted aluminum wheels. The chrome body accents on the bottom of the SUV is a nice touch to give it more character. From the outside, you wouldn’t think this is a 7-seater vehicle, but it is.

Did you know, there is a Hands-Free Foot-Activated Power Liftgate? If your hands are full and you need the trunk open, just wave your feet along the rear of the vehicle and it will automatically open up. One of my favourite features.

Technology

The interior is just as important as the exterior to give you comfort for all types of adventures. For me I rely on technology to make my adventures as smooth as possible. With auto-dimming rearview mirrors, I don’t have to squint my eyes when other people have bright headlights especially at night.

Rear view camera, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and blind spot detectors are my other favourite features. When I drive larger vehicles, I want to make sure I get full view of the whole vehicle when getting around town and when I park. There are a lot of built in features that I haven’t mentioned but they come in handy when you need it like power heated steering wheel.

Drive

The drive was very smooth and has good handling. If you have 1 person compared to a full SUV of 7 individuals, you’ll definitely feel the difference.

Third Row Seating

If you need extra room in your vehicle for people or cargo, the vehicle has a third-row PowerFold feature where you can configure it to your needs. In the trunk, you can find 4 options to choose from. You can fit quite a bit of cargo in the back. If you need additional space, you can fold down the 2nd row too.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a full-sized SUV with lots of room for the family and cargo with flexible configuration, this is a good option. The car looks great and is packed full of safety and entertainment features to make any adventure comfortable.

We made our way through 32 food and drink stalls. Some were hits, some were misses, and some were just plain gimmicks. There are still a lot more booths that we didn’t cover, but we were able to make a small dent into what is available. Hopefully this gives you an idea of the food and drinks available at the Richmond Night Market. By the end of the night, we were stuffed to the brim.

Science World at TELUS World of Science always has awesome exhibits coming into town. From May 19, 2018 – January 6, 2019, you can take a peek into the magic of Pixar and explore the science behind some beloved animated films like Toy Story to The Incredibles.

This interactive exhibition showcases the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts used by the artists and computer scientists who help bring Pixar’s award-winning films to the big screen. It is an exhibit for those who are interested in seeing all the hard work that goes into each animated film.

Fun Facts About Pixar

As you walk to the exhibit on the 2nd floor, you will see these large pieces on the wall with some fun facts about each Pixar movie. It’s crazy that each film pushes the boundaries of animated films.

Intro Film

As you enter the big green entrance, you get to watch a 5 minute film taking you behind the Pixar HQ and see how different departments come together to create a film from beginning to end.

It in a standing room only with a few seats on the sides as you watch the short film. Didn’t feel like 5 minutes to me as it was very interesting. When the film ends, you get directed to the large doors to enter the exhibit.

Life-Size Recreations

As you swing the doors open, you know you have to pose with Buzz Lightyear and take lots of photos. There are 5 life-sized figures and you need to take pictures with them all – Buzz Lightyear, Mike and Skully, Wall-E, Edna Mode, and Dory. They are scattered through out the exhibit, so keep and eye open.

Large Concept Art

There are so many things to pose with in here. Around the walls are these huge pieces of concept art that are really beautiful. You can recognize each piece from their corresponding movie.

40 Interactive Elements

There are over 40 interactive elements in here and you get to experience all the different steps in filmmaking from beginning to end.  As someone who isn’t so keen on using complex forms of math for measurements, I should have paid more attention in school.

Admission Rates

If you are already a Science World Member, you can get Pixar Membership pass for $19 to get unlimited access to The Science Behind Pixar Exhibit.

For everyone else, it is an additional $8 to the admission rates.

Final Thoughts

Overall, its a good exhibit to add on to the overall Science World experience. Lots to see and do to tired out kids and adults. This exhibition was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios and they did a great job in breaking down all the steps that go into an animated film.

We went on a road trip with Angie Quaale (@AngieQuaale) in anticipation of her book release Eating Local in the Fraser Valley. We were taken to 6 great locations in the Fraser Valley, specifically Langley and Abbotsford for a food lover’s road trip. We spent the day visiting these great locations:

  • Dead Frog Brewery: Latest Craft brewery to open up in Langley
  • Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store: This is a foodie’s paradise for all things gourmet
  • Milner Valley Cheese: Fresh goat cheese produced on the farm
  • Fraser Valley Cider Company: Traditional craft cider made in small batches using local BC apples
  • Maan Farms: Fresh farm market, hayride and more.
  • Mt. Lehman Winery: One of most stunning views in the entire Fraser Valley

Here is a recap of the day and when you’re in the Fraser Valley, definitely check these places out.

Dead Frog Brewery

Dead Frog Brewery is currently relocating from their Aldergrove location to continue serving up craft beer in small artisan batches. They are set to open up very soon and when it’s open, there will be gourmet food and community events set up.

Well Seasoned

Well Seasoned is a gourmet food store with gadgets, cookware, and food products fit for all foodies. When strolling through the store, you’ll find something interested in every corner. I bought pesto noodles, edamame corn chips and was very tempted to buy wine cheddar.

Angie made us black corn, black bean salsa and her bacon beer beans, recipes that is in her upcoming book –Eating Local in the Fraser Valley.  The book is not only a recipe book, but a guide book to eating and being inspired by the Fraser Valley producers we have here.

Each recipe is tied down to a location and sometimes a season. The book is locally focused and explores the relationship between the producers featured in the book and the land. The food community is growing in Fraser Valley, as costs are more accommodating out in the country and makes for a quaint atmosphere.

Milner Valley Cheese

Milner Valley Cheese in Langley is a fifth generation family farm in Langley, who tries to do different things with their agriculture. They have 80 goats and follow a natural cycle of production. Did you know, in 2018 177 babies were born on this farm?

Memorable items to check out here are the goat milk gelato, which is very delicious. Creamy and smooth, it does not taste sharp or gamey. I would suggest having the hazelnut goat milk gelato. I also bought a make-your-own-cheese kit here ($39.95) and I am very excited to try the results of my own cheese. If only I had a cooler! Bring one and load up on cheese, milk and fresh lamb.

Fraser Valley Cider Company

Fraser Valley Cider Company creates traditional craft cider made in small batches using local BC apples.

Rachel Bolongaro gave us a tour and tasting of their ciders and shared some history on how they became to be. She had a long 20 year career as an engineer and was looking for a career change to challenge herself some more. After taking a cider making course, it clicked and Fraser Valley Cider Company was born. Three years into operations, they have produced over 30,000 litres of delicious cider.

They are family friendly as they have soda flights and a large field by the patio to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. They are also allow dogs and provide treats for them. The furniture on the patio was up-cycled by Rachel and looks great. My favourite ciders hands down were the soft, sweet, smooth Rosy cider and the crisp, quenching Elderflower cider.

Maan Farms & Winery

Maan Farms & Winery has unique events happening all the time on their farm. Have you ever seen goat yoga video online? They do goat yoga and you can do warrior pose right in front of real live goats. During Halloween, they even have the scariest corn maze according to DailyHive.

They are a family run business and Mama Maan knows how to shows guests a good time. As soon as we arrived, we were treated to sangria, samosas and a fun hayride.

When we returned, we had delicious butter chicken, chickpea curry, jasmine rice, madras spices, yogurt, fresh roti, hot sauces, and blueberry pies.

They’re all about making the farm an experience for people of all ages. Children can see the critters, adults can enjoy goat yoga and wine, and foodies can enjoy the selection of fresh and local produce or their country kitchen.

Mt. Lehman Winery

The last stop was Mt. Lehman Winery in Abbotsford. We had a wine tasting of their different varieties, but the ones that were memorable to me were the 2014 Cabernet Libre and the 2016 Pinot Noir.

The 2016 Pinot Noir had a spiced taste that was not too bold and I would like to pair it with some home-cooked salmon in the future.

I was impressed by the cellar– the string lights were not on, but my photographer mind bookmarked this place if I wanted to do photos for a wedding.

Stunning views of the winery and it’s the best view of the Fraser Valley with all the acres of farm land and mountains in the backdrop.

Not shabby with a glass in hand too.

Final Thoughts

A day trip around the Fraser Valley for a foodie adventure is wonderful and doesn’t take too long to get to. It’s about 45 minutes to 1 hour away from Downtown Vancouver, so with the weather being super gorgeous, you’ll definitely want to visit. There is lots to see and do in the area.

For more Fraser Valley inspiration, check out Angie’s book – Eating Local in the Fraser Valley

One of the newer features at Cineplex is their D-Box immersive experience where the seats rumble and move with the movie. We came here on a Tuesday, when the prices are cheaper than the rest of the week to watch Avengers: Infinity War. They are around $25 regularly and $14 on a Tuesday, definitely not cheap but at least the seats are reserved ahead of time, but that is slowly becoming the norm.

Theatre Entrance

The area where D-Box seats are at the Scotiabank Theatre in Downtown Vancouver is in their Ultra AVX area. You won’t find any fancy signs.

30 Seats Inside the Theatre

D-Box seats are in red and there are only 30 seats per theatre. 3 rows of 10 seats each. The rest of the seats in the Ultra AVX theatre is dark blue. With every scene, you can feel the motion and on-screen action in your own seat. The movie is coded, frame by frame, to create to matching motion effects that syncs with the movie and people either love it or hate it.

View from the seats

We chose the first row of D-Box smack in the middle and this is the view. Not bad at all.

Seat Controls

Each seat has a control where you can have 4 levels of intensity to how intense you want the rumble. My husband liked it at full blast, but I prefer to have it with very minimal movement as it felt more like someone was vigorously kicking my seat. You will feel every pan or zoom of the camera. Alternatively you can turn it off, but you are spending quite a bit on the tickets to experience this…unless you were the unwilling guest.

Final Thought

You are paying a premium to sit in these seats and I didn’t like the motion at all not matter which setting I used. Any movement of the chair, I felt like I was focusing less on the movie as I was fixated on deciding if I should turn the motion off or keep it on.

I definitely wouldn’t spend the extra money on D-Box, but that is my personal preference. Have you been? What was your experience?

As consumers, it’s always great to see change driven by our feedback. The 2019 Buick Envision has a new design, performance and great technology features added to this small luxury SUV. At first glance, you notice the subtle difference in the sculpted front fascia, new grille and headlamps compared to previous models. The new 19-inch wheels provide an expressive and distinct profile as well.

As a consumer, I value safety and technology in an SUV. I can have confidence that myself or anyone else driving will be assisted by the car when our eyes can’t see obstructions in our blind spots or just anything that we’re not aware of.

Envision highlights

  • New nine-speed automatic transmission for 2.0L turbo models.
  • 2.0L turbo engine offers increased vehicle performance of 252 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine and transmission updates produce 0-60 mph acceleration just under a half-second quicker than the 2018 model.
  • Engine stop/start deactivation switch – a Buick first in North America.
  • Single rate brake booster for improved overall brake performance that requires less effort.
  • Flexibility to switch between Adaptive Cruise Control and conventional Cruise Control.
  • Enhanced visibility on Rear Vision Camera.
  • Improved hands-free microphone for better call quality and better voice recognition.
  • The seat heating system warms up quicker than on the previous model year.
  • Next-generation wireless charging with more power for fast and efficient charging including iPhone8/iPhoneX compatibility.
  • Lighting upgrades across all trims: HID headlights standard on 2.5L models, bi-functional LED headlamps on 2.0L turbo models and LED wing signature lights on every model.
  • In-vehicle air ionizer that helps eliminate odours, reduce bacteria and provide better air quality.

Standard features include Buick’s signature QuietTuning; 10 airbags, including side curtain and knee airbags; Rear Park Assist; and newly added Rear Seat Reminder. Available features include Surround Vision, Safety Alert Seat and Forward Automatic Braking, among others. Every Envision comes equipped with an 8-inch diagonal infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Autocompatibility, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a limited trial of OnStar (including 3GB or 3 Months of data, whichever comes first) and access to the myBuick app at no additional cost.

The 2019 Envision goes on sale in the spring of 2018 and will be available in four trim levels starting at Preferred ($39,995), Essence ($43,995), Premium ($47,095) and Premium II ($50,995). Prices are inclusive of Destination Freight Charges and A/C tax.

Going to Tofino is aways a joy driving down the winding roads of beautiful British Columbia and taking in the beautiful nature. What is equally on par is their fresh produce and innovative Pacific North West cusine. We spent a few days in Tofino driving in the 2018 Buick Regal and one of the highlights of the trip was getting first hand knowledge of crabbing and foraging in the backyard of Tofino.

Tofino is a small town on Vancouver Island known for their surfing, sightseeing, and eats as it faces the Pacific Ocean. It’s a popular spot for short vacations for locals. Even some celebrities have vacation homes here. What I love most is that there are no chain restaurants for miles. All you get is local dishes with local ingredients.

Chef Paul Moran of 1909 Kitchen inside the Tofino Resort + Marina took us for a crabbing and foraging tour. With all the items collected, Chef would create a few appetizers with what we collected.

Crabbing

We got into a boat after a safety tutorial and got out life jackets on. The night before, they put down a few crab traps in the close waters with some fish trimmings to lure them in.

As it is peak crabbing season, we took chances to pull up the traps, and it needed some arm strength to pull up those traps. It gave me a lot more respect for those who catch seafood. It’s hard work.

There are limitations on the size and amount of crabs we could collect as we were out here. Due diligence is done to ensure the sustainability of the seafood in the ocean. We collected 3 fresh beautiful crabs that would be turned into appetizers later in the day.

As we got our crabs, we headed into the woods to gather some more items.

Foraging in the Woods

Some may disregard some edible plants as weeds and I’m guilty of doing the same. We looked a few bushes and Chef Paul Moran was able to guide us through a few items and share with us their flavour profiles.

Spruce Buds

Spruce Buds are high in vitamin C and has a citrus flavour profile to them, which can replace lemon sometimes. Sometimes you can find these incorporated into cocktails, ice cream and beer.

Narrow-leaved Plantain

Narrow-leaved Plantain grows close to the ground in clusters. It can be used in teas or used as medicine for wounds and sores.

Elderflower

Elderflower has been a popular food trend for the last few years being turned into syrups for beverages for its floral taste.

Salmonberry Blossoms

Salmonberry Blossoms grows on the Pacific Coast due to the climate. Its bright pink/purple in colour and edible. If left on the bush, it will turn into a salmonberry.

Salal Blossom

Salal Blossom is sticky. It’s common to find this bush in BC. The indigenous peoples use this in their cooking.

Dandelion Buds

Dandelion Buds are edible. It’s gotten a bad reputation as dandelions grow in yards like crazy and even between cracks of cement. We were in search of the dandelion buds for the bittersweet flavour profile.

Bittercress

The last item we picked was bittercress, a wild version of watercress flowers. It has a taste similar to broccoli.

Now, that we have all 7 items, it was time to head to the kitchen to see how it gets turned into beautiful dishes.

From Nature to Kitchen

Chef Paul Moran made us a flatbread topped with the foraged ingredients.

After the base of the flatbread was cooked in the oven, he tore a bit of every item on top of the pizza.

The crisp flatbread, floral foraged greens, and the sweet salty cheese was delicious.

Lets not forget the crab we caught earlier. It was so fresh and sweet. You can really tell the quality and difference. I ate so much of like I was at a buffet. hahaha. Can’t get enough.

It was a fun afternoon following Chef Paul Moran gather all the ingredients and turn it into appetizers before dinner. Sometimes its good to go back to nature to see where food comes from and not underestimating whats growing in our natural wild forests.

Big thanks to Buick Canada for putting this fun activity together, Lucas Scarfone Photography for the photos, and Chef Paul Moran for the tour.

We had 4 days in Honolulu, Hawaii and wanted a quick inexpensive tour to take us around the island of Oahu. I gravitated towards browsing on Groupon and stumbled upon the Full Day Deluxe Circle Island Tour by Aloha Circle Island Tour. It was 57% off plus an additional 20% from Groupon, so it was $52.80 before taxes. It has very good reviews, so we took a chance.

Purchasing the Groupon

Prior to purchasing, you should call them to ensure the dates you are looking for are available. When I called the date I had in mind was available and I can book over the phone, but they didn’t have the additional Groupon 20% discount, so as we were still on the phone, they waited patiently for me to purchase via Groupon. I provided them my confirmation code and they took my contact information. They will make sure you get an email and text as an official confirmation.

They will also mention their Pearl Harbour Tour, Ziplining and snorkeling tour, and the Dole Plantation Tour, but I said I wasn’t interested.

By the end of the call you should know the time and location for your pick up for the day of the tour you selected.

If you don’t want to call them, you can fill out a reservation form or use their live chat box on their website. I called because I wanted to get a hold of them right away.

Meeting Up

My meet up time was 7am at Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel and they told us to show up 10 minutes earlier.  As it is an early morning, make sure you have everything ready and packed. They want you to make sure you have:

  • towel
  • swimsuit
  • dry clothes
  • beach bag
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • camera (underwater case for your cellphone to capture snorkeling adventures)
  • cash

We saw the vehicle and Uncle Anthony welcomed us and everyone else on the tour. There was around 27 of us on the bus.

Diamond Head Beach Lookout

It was a weekend and there was a cycling and running competition happening, so they closed the roads to the Diamond Head Beach Lookout. We missed this stop but Uncle Anthony made it up to us by taking us to a few extra stops along the way.

Hawaii Kai Scenic Lookout

At this quick stop, took a few photos for East Honolulu and Koko Crater. This scenic poiint is on Kalanaianaole Highway.

As we stopped, we got a taste of Taro Doughnuts from Kamehameha Bakery.

Hanauma Bay

The views here were unbelievably beautiful. Uncle Anthony told us a little bit about the area.

7 Eleven

A hilarious stop here to grab some beer and snacks. 7 Eleven is definitely different from North America. There is a lot of Hawaiian food and Japanese influenced snacks.

Halona Blowhole

This natural structure is made of molten lava thousands of years ago. When waves crash into the crevices, it shoots water up in the air creating the blowhole.

Uncle Anthony sang us Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of Over The Rainbow.

Macadamia Nut Tropical Farm

At this stop, we can take a look at a local Macadamia Nut farm and see it grow from a flower to the nut. We can have as many macadamia nut samples, cups of Kona Coffee and got to crack out own nuts.

Chinaman’s Hat

We are now on Oahu’s windward coast. This geological formation looks like a hat from China, this the name. Across the street where we were stopped is Maui’s hook.

Kahuku Shrimp at Fumi’s

It’s not Giovanni’s, but they still have very fresh shrimp and the truck is located adjacent to their farm. The most popular items are butter garlic shrimp and spicy garlic shrimp. The prices are higher at $13, but it was worth it. Make sure you bring cash as this is additional.

Sea Turtle Beach (Alii beach)

We got ample time to snorkel at this stop. We picked up out gear and headed down to the beach. As I am not a swimmer, I picked up a life jacket just in case.

Others were prepared with snorkeling shoes as the rocks hurt the bottoms of your feet. Also a waterproof iPhone case is good so you can take pictures and record video under the water. Or a waterproof go-pro is great as there were 2 sea turtles spotted in the waters.

Fruit stand at Kahuku Land Farms

You will see lots of fresh tropical fruits and banana lumpia. A lot of people bought cut fruit to get a taste. The banana lumpia was delicious!

We tried pineapple with Li Hing Mui Powder, a salty dried plum powder.

Dole Pineapple Plantation

A short visit was made here and we grabbed some dole whip and walked around the area. There is no time for the maze or train ride, but we weren’t interested in those activities.

The thing to do is get some dole whip and look at how pineapples grow. Since pineapples aren’t grown in Hawaii for export, it’s really just a tourist attraction.

End of Tour

We got back to our hotel around 3:30pm. The traffic was light, so we were back way before 5pm. The tour was worth the price that we paid. It hits most of the stops around the island. Uncle Anthony was a great guide, very enthusiastic and funny. The only downside is that some people on the tour found cockroaches on the bus that made its way into their bags. None of that happened to us as we weren’t carrying any food with us. Other that that, we didn’t have any issues.

The 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid Elite is a full size luxury sedan which has gotten a large cosmetic update for this year. The diamond pentagon grille, LED lights, and reshaped hood gives this vehicle its aesthetic beauty.

We tested it for a week in the rainy Vancouver weather to get a good feel for the vehicle for the west coast weather conditions.

Hybrid

It’s great that this is a hybrid vehicle, but it surprisingly wasn’t very fuel-efficient at all. Seems a bit backwards since I didn’t drive very much in a week but got through half a tank. The vehicle really excels on the highway giving it a very powerful drive especially on sport mode.

Technology

Despite the updated exterior, the technology seems dated when it comes to software. The omission of the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were missed, but they were able to add the stylish Head-Up Display, which projects a digital speedometer as well as turn-by-turn navigation directions, which is very handy.

With the surround view camera system, parking sensors, and dimmable mirrors, it felt very safe driving around town during the day and night. One of my pet peeves are cars with insanely bright lights, so with the dimmable mirrors, it helps prevent the light piercing into my eyes at night.

Spacious Interior

As a full-sized sedan, you get plenty of leg room in the front row and the back seats.

There is also ventilation and seat warmers for the back seat. It’s important for passengers to be comfortable for short to long rides.

I always find the seat warmers a joy for back seat passengers to play with. Their eyes just instantly light up as they have buttons to push.

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking you’ll save gas money by purchasing the 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid Elite, you may not depending on how you drive. Since the vehicle is a full size sedan, it is very comfortable for the driver and passengers. Plus, the safety features are great.

Vancouver has pretty mild weather most of the year, but once a year there happens to be a surprise snow storm that paralyzes the city. We drove the 2018 Honda Accord Touring around the city in both sunny, rainy, and snowy conditions.

Heads Up Display

One of the new features is the Head Ups Display (HUD), which places important information in the driver’s line of sight. It can display navigation directions, speed, incoming calls, and any warnings. At first, this feature was a bit distracting, but I loved it the most for navigation so I wouldn’t miss a turn.

You can make adjustments on the left panel using the HUD button to adjust position.

You still have your normal dashboard if you decide not to use the HUD.

Blind Spot Indicators

Being able to quickly see if anything is in the blind spot is a blessing just in case there is a smaller car or even a cyclist. Being aware of your surroundings is key.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Even though Honda has their own satellite linked navigation system, I much prefer the Apple CarPlay feature to sync items on my phone to the dashboard like my music, any calls and Apple maps. Just plug in the phone and let it do its magic.

There is also wireless charging in the front console if you want to charge any devices that have the capability.

Roomy Interior

Besides being a driver, I also enjoy being a passenger to get an overall feel of the car. With the Honda Accord, space has never been a problem. Since the car itself is a bit longer than the Civic, it gives extra leg room in the back seats for added comfort.

There is also ventilation, charging ports and heated seats too. Now thats comfort.

Drive

The Accord was comfortable to drive. It has a powerful engine to go up any steep hills as well as going fast on the highways or slowly through city congestion.

There is a sport mode button if you want extra power. There are also steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. For city driving, you can turn on Econ mode to save a little extra on gas without compromise to the feel of the car.

Final Thoughts

I only covered a small fraction of feature of the 2018 Honda Accord Touring, but I was impressed with it’s capability and it’s packed full of features to give you comfort and safety when on the road in any conditions. I always felt safe when in the city and the suburbs.

Pack your gummy bears, we’re going on a drive. We were invited to a weekend getaway to experience culinary delights, entertainment and relaxation at Tulalip Resort Casino. Only a 2 hour drive South from Vancouver, 30 minutes from Seattle and right next to the Premium Outlets, Tulalip is nice for those looking to treat themselves with a nearby escape and take it easy. We got off early on a Friday and let our weekend adventure begin.

I heard about Tulalip many times but had never been. When I asked my friends about it, I got the same answers over and over: it’s next to the Premium Outlets, only went inside for the buffet, the buffet was good. A jist of what I didn’t expect: they have full spa services with good rates, almost Vegas level interior renovations featuring local Tulalip tribal art, regular shows and concerts and a range of food options from build-your-own pizza to sports bar to fancy Pacific Northwest cuisine and more. Also their Sommelier, Tom Thompson, is fantastic.

Accommodations:

We arrived at reception in the late afternoon and I was immediately taken back by the quality of the renovations. Beautiful ambient lighting and artwork set the mood for a relaxing weekend. Opening the doors to our 2016 renovated king bedded room, we were greeted with soft music playing from the smart TV. The room had a luxurious atmosphere, a comfortable bed, massive double sink bathroom and artwork in all the details.

You may not expect  from its unassuming exterior but Tulalip is operating at 90% occupancy. Currently they have single king rooms, double queens and 5 uniquely decorated specialty suites. They offer their rooms with dining or shopping packages so know you have some options before you book.

Drinks: Destinations Lounge

This was where we first met Tommy, the passionate and easy-going Sommelier, and got a glimpse into his vast knowledge. For drink aficionados that are about trying everything, a weekend in Washington instead of a Canadian destination means a chance to try local offerings. At Destinations, Tommy prides himself in stocking a number of hard to find gems.

Tommy set us up with this beautiful trio:

  • Schilling Grapefruit and Chill Cider (Washington) – Schilling exclusively makes craft cider with innovative flavours. I don’t think I can return to normal cider after this and unfortunately there is nothing comparable in BC.
  • Deschutes The Abyss (Oregon) – A World Beer Award winning wine barrel aged stout. Unlike other stouts, it’s not particularly chocolatey, nutty or anything. It’s a balanced, flavourful stout without any one taste jumping out. Worthy of being a stout classic if it weren’t so limited.
  • Pappy Van Winkle 15 year (Kentucky) – A rare bourbon found only in 7 restaurants in Washington. It’s most unique characteristic is its strong caramel and vanilla flavour

Even though the word Sommelier is intimidating, if you get the chance I encourage you to seek him out and get a recommendation. Especially if you are going to Blackfish during your visit.

Fine Dining: Blackfish

Blackfish is the most unexpected find in the casino. They serve fresh oysters, seafood, steak and a very satisfying dessert menu. Fresh salmon grilled over an open fire using traditional Tulalip tribal techniques is their speciality.  You can see a menu on their website.

Once again Tommy wowed us with the wine pairing. Taking into consideration not only the pair itself but also where we were from and giving us a taste of something we hadn’t had before. From their cellar of 1000 wines, he showed us some unique European style wines for our Vancouverite taste buds. Tommy sent me some of his notes, shared below, on the wine pairings and I can’t even begin to imagine how he keeps track of the dimensions of all his wines. Seriously, talk to your Sommeliers.

Starting with a delicate and fluffy Dungeness crab cake with lemon aioli, paired with Cristal champagne. According to Tommy, bubbly is paired with crab cakes to “cut through the oil”. With his specific choice, a well aged bubbly with finer bubbles allow the crab flavours to linger. When it’s a good crab cake, of course you’d want the flavors to linger right! Their crab cake not too oily, with natural flavours of quality seafood coming though.

Have you ever seen a crouton ring? Their Heart of Romaine Caesar salad is a work of art. Leaves of lettuce were individual ripped, seasoned and assembled again into this deceivingly minimalist presentation. This time we had a German Riesling: “the wine really balances the many components of a Caesar, while the very present acidity cuts through the creamy texture, leaving a great finish on the palate.”

Their Heritage Salmon is grilled over an open fire as it would be in traditional Tulalip culture. It has a beautiful smoky and salty taste that contrasts nicely with the sweetness of the corn fritters that it’s paired with. You can watch the salmon cook through the windows showcasing the fire pit. It is quite a feat to cook salmon so well with nothing but a fire and an iron stick. Rather than a white wine, this was paired with a light red with some fruity notes: Domaine de la Janasse ‘Vielles Vignes’ Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Their filet mignon was my second favorite of the night; topped with blue cheese, toasted hazel nuts, apple bacon and peppercorn demi-glace. It is a fairly busy dish, served with bacon wrapped asparagus, a fennel & frisse salad with prickly pear vinaigrette and a garlic-cheddar potato fritter. Paired with a rich Gaja Cabernet Sauvignon, I enjoyed the mixture of textures and hearty taste.

We had the luxury of trying one of everything on their dessert menu. I would go out of my way to have the “sticky toffee pudding cake” (this was my favorite at Blackfish) and would recommend the “berry meringue concord” if cooler tangy desserts are more your type.

Midnight Snack: Blazing Paddles

If you’re going to be staying at a casino resort, a little midnight snacking is bound to happen. Their stone oven pizza place is bumping with a full bar on a Friday night. It’s build-your-own with around 50 options for toppings. If you’re shopping next door at the outlet and want something easy that isn’t the buffet, this is a great alternative.

Breakfast: Cedars Café

Cedars Café is open 24/7 and serves breakfast until 11 am. The star of the show here is no doubt the Pacific Northwest Benedict with Dungeness crab. Unless you are allergic, I see no reason to go for the other benes. I was also curious about the tex-mex Benedict which ended up tasting exactly as it would sound. Still good but I feel odd calling it an eggs Benedict.

Relax: T Spa

On Saturday morning, we hit the T Spa for a facial and a massage. Their spa offers everything. On top of massages, body treatments and facials, they also do make up, hair styling, nails and even teeth whitening. Basically everything a wedding party could desire. This was my first time getting a facial and I tried the “T Spa Signature Facial” which includes an arm and hand massage. I felt very comfortable in the hands of my aesthetician who answered all of my many skincare curiosities. My friend had the “Sacred Plant Ritual” body emulsion and massage. She was glowing as we sat in our fluffy robes in the relaxation room with tea. With all services, you get free access to their gym, sauna and steam room. Their website offers monthly specials on spa services that may also come with complementary products.

Entertainment : Shows, Gaming and Shopping

What else can you do at Tulalip?

  1. Catch a show. We were also treated to watch the charming Richard Marx in concert. We had only known his song “Right Here Waiting” but ended up driving home to his Spotify playlist.
  2. Try your luck, it is a casino after all.
  3. Shopping at the Seattle Premium Outlets, just across the parking lot.

Scenic Route: Chuckanut Drive

If you desire one last adventure on the road back North, consider taking Chuckanut Drive instead of a portion of the I5 highway. Running along the ocean, it’s a nice drive on a twisting road that winds through the forest and along the cliffs by the sea. Turnoffs to Chuckanut are clearly marked along the highway between Burlington and Bellingham. There are two formal lookout points with parking lots just before the road enters Larrabee State Park.

In our excited stupor we parked somewhere random and tried to walk down to the ocean through thorny bushes. We made it, and it was worth it for the sunset, but that was before we drove past the easy access lookouts.

Squamish is one of the top 52 places to go in the world according to The New York Times and I’m so lucky to have it located about an hour away from Vancouver. A lot of people like to spend the afternoon here before heading to Whistler. I love visiting because of the beautiful nature and hidden food and brewery scene.

The scenic drive along the Sea to Sky Highway is breathtaking with many stops along the way. The most popular places to go hike is the Stawamus Chief, which can take 3 -6 hours but not meant for everyone. The Sea to Sky Gondola is a fun experience going up to walk the suspension bridge as well as watching the scenery when its a nice sunny day.

I on the other hand love to take it easy and experience what the locals love to do.

Getting around: Drive

The best way to get to Squamish and the surrounding areas is to drive. There are no Ubers or Lyft in British Columbia. You can take a Greyhound bus from Vancouver to Squamish, but as restaurants and attractions are spread apart, the easier way to get around efficiently is driving.

Coffee Stop: Counterpart Coffee

Counterpart Coffee is a small-batch coffee roastery but they have a coffee bar tucked away in the complex that they are located inside. It is easily missed, but when you find it, you’ll love their coffee to get you started for the day. I enjoyed their lattes.

Brunch: Fergie’s Cafe

Fergie’s Cafe is a local and tourist favourite for their benny’s and caesars. There is a reason why they have been voted Best Breakfast for the past few years. So delicious.

Short Hike: Bandywine Falls

30 minutes north of Squamish is Brandwine Falls Provincial Park featuring a 70m gorgeous waterfall. It is a short and easy hike to get to the falls. There are also picnic areas if you want to sit around and enjoy your own snacks.

Sights: Tantalus Look Out

On the way back from Brandywine Falls, make sure to stop at Tantalus Lookout for views of the mountains and river. It also has a good view of Squamish from far away. Very easy to park and take in the sights.

Lunch: Kululu Cafe

Kululu Cafe has caught the attention of local and visitors even though they haven’t been open for very long. They serve delicious Japanese cuisine with fresh and simple flavours that taste awesome. Their rice bowls and noodle soups are delicious. I highly recommend the tuna trio bowl which has toro, tuna and spicy tuna on top of rice.

Tasting: Gillespie’s Fine Spirits

Gillespie’s Fine Spirits is a small batch distillery in Squamish. We came for a tour and tasting to see what they were all about. John and Kelly started Gillespie’s to create a greener, more sustainable business model for distilling alcohol. Check out their tasting room on Wednesday to Saturday to sample their variety of spirits. They also have their cocktail lounge open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night for Craft Cocktails made with local ingredients.

Brewery: Backcountry Brewing

Backcountry Brewing in Squamish is a craft brewery that opened in 2017. They join the great craft brewery scene in Squamish as the 3rd craft brewery here. They serve up beer flights so you can try the array of beers they create. They have a stellar food menu as well and their pizzas are really popular.

Late Night Eats: Mag’s 99

Mag’s 99 is a Fried Chicken and Mexican Cantina in Squamish just on the highway. A popular spot for a quick bite of fried chicken and chimichangas. People love coming here after drinking or if they want something fast and cheap.

Sights: Porteau Cove

Porteau Cove Provincial park is beautiful right at dusk. As there is minimal light pollution, it makes it great for stargazing if you are passing by on a clear night. If you are a scuba diver, they are open for recreational diving. Under the water, you can see reefs and sunken treasures.

Cañon City straddles the Arkansas River and is a popular destination for sightseeing and hiking trails.

We drove a little over an hour from Colorado Springs to spend an afternoon to experience the Royal Gorge Route Railway and have a wine tasting at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey.

Transportation: Rent a Car

The best way to get to Cañon City was to drive by car. As we don’t live in the US, we made sure to rent a car to make getting around more convenient.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Royal Gorge Route Railroad is absolutely stunning and is a must see when in Cañon City. The scenic ride lasts 2 hours and meanders around the stunning parts of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.

We were able to move freely from cabin to cabin and spent a lot of time on the outside deck taking in the beauty of our surroundings.

Instead of just riding the train, you can dine as well. They pride themselves of having firs-class dining and service aboard the train. As it was lunch time, we browsed through the 403 Grill menu and ordered their burgers and sandwiches as we stared off into the distance in the vista dome car. It was very filling and the quality was there.

I would highly recommend this excursion on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad for families, visitors and train-lovers.

They also have special events where you can really dine in style during the evenings.

The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey

Our next stop was The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. They have a tasting room open daily to try a variety of their award-winning wines. Of their 14 wines, 10 of the are complimentary to taste. Their aim is to produce Colorado’s best wine. The other reserve wines are $1 each.

The Tasting Room

The tasting room has a large counter to fit a number of people interested in the tastings. Inside the room, you will find other wine trinkets and items for home.

The American Riesling is my favourite of the bunch. It is created with a blend of Washington and Colorado grapes. Upon first taste it is sweet with a honey and citrus notes. It’s a good price at $18 a bottle and pairs well with poultry and ham. This wine was awarded a silver medal at the Tasters Guild International.

If you’re in the area, stop by and there are no pressures to purchase. If you find something you like, the wine is very affordable. They can also ship to most places in the United States, if you live elsewhere.

This Broadway version of Anastasia transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman – Anastasia sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

When I knew I was going to New York, a lot of people recommended we attend the Anastasia musical on Broadway. Seeing that I am a huge fan of the Disney movie, I booked my tickets and counted down the days till I would be in New York. We arrived with our paper tickets in hand 30 minutes at Broadhurst Theatre before the show to begin lining up. We were in the area early, so we just decided to wait.

Lottery

Anastasia has lottery tickets for $42 through a daily digital lottery at www.anastasiabroadwaylottery.com . The lottery opens at midnight on the day of each performance. The lottery closes at 9am for matinees and 2pm for evening performances. It’s a good way to score cheap tickets.

Seats

The theatre is pretty small compared to the other large theatres in Times Square, so if you don’t get a close seat, don’t worry too much as each seat is pretty good. We got 3rd row in the balcony closer to the right side of the theatre.

The Show

The sets, costumes, and  score including favourites from the animated film – “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December”. They did include a few new songs, which I loved the addition. The show is a total of around 2 hours and 45 minutes.

I really enjoyed the show from beginning to end. I was so happy they removed all the supernatural elements that were in the animated film since it wouldn’t make sense to have a talking bat like Bartok as part of the storyline.

After the show

When you wait around after the show, the cast some out to meet the fans before heading home. It’s a great chance to get some picture, get an autograph, and even say hello. When I was here, I caught a glimpse of  Christy Altomare (Anya) and Derek Klena (Dmitry).

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved this show and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting New York.

I spent a few days in Colorado Springs taking in the sights of the Eastern Foot of the Rocky Mountains. A great change since I’m so used to seeing the Western-side from the West Coast of Canada.

At 6,035 feet the city stands over 1.6 km above sea level, which is higher than Denver. For visitors like me who are at sea level, this took a little bit of adjustment, so we didn’t exercise heavily. We took it slow, but did notice even climbing a flight of stairs was a bit more difficult. To counteract this, we made sure to stay very hydrated.

Accommodations: The Cliff House at Peak Pines

Nestled at the foot of Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs is the historic Cliff House which has a Victorian charm to it. From its start as a stagecoach stop to its turn-of-the-century prominence as the area’s premier mineral resort, it remains ago to place in Manitou Springs to stay. We found that they have the glamour of a bygone era with a modern-day style and sophistication. Plus, they were awarded the AAA Four Diamond status. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Each room has its individual character and includes special feature such as a gas fireplace, two person spa tubs, steam showers and towel warmers.

We stayed in the Katherine Lee Bates Celebrity Suite. It has a queen bed, sitting areas with gas fireplaces, heated towel racks, wifi and tub. The rooms are very beautiful and has all the modern features that you would need. Lots of outlets and USB plugs to charge all my devices.

Every morning, there is Light Continental Breakfast Buffet served in the dining area. We had a nibble of scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, pastries, tea, juices, and freshly brewed coffee before we started each adventure.

Dinner: Fine Dining at The Cliff House

At night, the same Dining Room as the breakfast buffet turns into a modern Victorian splendor for dinner. The walls are adorned with stunning oil paintings by local legend C.H. Rockey and the damask-covered tables are set with Riedel crystal wine glasses and Christofle Hotel flatware.

On the menu, you will find unique items like Elk, Lamb, and Rocky Mountain Trout for dinner.

Transportation: Rent a Car

The best way to get around Colorado Springs is renting a car. I looked into public transportation and car sharing, but the cheapest and most efficient way around was to rent a car. It’s best to book a vehicle ahead of time before you get to the airport. We actually booked ours via costco.com for the best deal.

Taste Test: Manitou Springs Mineral Springs

You can taste test the 8 different mineral springs that once were thought to have healing powers. Each spring has its own distinctive flavour and effervescence, so make sure you bring a water bottle to taste them all.

This is crafted by natural rainwater and snow melt from Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains that soak into rock fractures. As the water penetrates deeper into the ground, it becomes heated and mineralized. The warm water naturally flows up into the porous limestone where it becomes carbonated.

It’s a fun experience, but not everyone likes the taste of mineral water. The best part is that it’s free.

Sightseeing: Manitou Cliff Dwellings

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a historical place. Preserved under a protective red sandstone overhang, the authentic Anasazi cliff dwellings are over 800 years old. Guests are encouraged to explore the dwellings room by room using a self-guided tour. These fascinating architectural remnants are from an American Indian culture that roamed the Southwest from 1200 B.C. to 1300 A.D. I can’t even imagine how life was like back then living in this dwelling.

There is an entry fee associated with visiting Manitou Cliff Dwellings.

Below the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings is a three-story Pueblo-style building that was built in the style of the descendants of the Anasazi. The first six rooms of our Pueblo were built in 1904 and housed a family of local Native Americans until 1984. Since then, the Pueblo has been expanded faithfully in the architectural style of the Pueblo Indians and houses the Anasazi museum and gift shop.

Lunch: Crystal Park Cantina

Crystal Park Cantina is a unique, home-style Mexican restaurant in Manitou Springs serving delicious food made with the finest ingredients available. On the menu, you will find tapas, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and enjoy the drink menu of margaritas, sangria, and cocktails.

There is a contemporary atmosphere in this restaurant featuring local artists and is very casual and welcoming.

Sightseeing: Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark with dramatic views, towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of  Pikes Peak and if you’re lucky – brilliant blue skies. We loved it so much that we actually came twice, plus there is no entry fee. The outstanding geologic features of the park are the ancient sedimentary beds of deep-red, pink and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestone that were deposited horizontally, but have now been tilted vertically by the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and Pikes Peak.

Take a stop at the visitors centre to get a view of the entire garden at their viewing area. There is a theatre and other displays to learn more about the area. You can then drive freely around the garden and park in designated areas to view certain sights. You will definitely want to dedicated a few hours here as its just stunning.

There are hiking trails and shorter walks to cater to those with different abilities. The space is very photogenic, so I had a blast taking photographs. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some rock climbers.

Drive-thru: Glen Eyrie Castle

When was the last time you were the honoured guest at a castle? Enjoyed a morning coffee on the terrace overlooking a herd of bighorn sheep? Just minutes from downtown Colorado Springs, Glen Eyrie is the original estate of the city’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer.

We did not stay here, but we did take a drive through the estate, but we could not step out of the vehicle to walk around. There are public tours at select times during the day, but we didn’t end up attending any of those.

The animals here are stunning and it was like having a mini safari ride driving through the estate.

Sightseeing/Hiking: Seven Falls

The Broadmoor Seven Falls is a series of seven cascading waterfalls of South Cheyenne Creek. It is a privately-owned tourist attraction since it was opened in the 1880s, so you must take a bus to get inside as well as pay a small fee.

Trails from the top of the falls lead to Midnight Falls, near the headwaters of South Cheyenne Creek, and Inspiration Point.

Sightseeing/Hike: Helen Hunt Falls

Helen Hunt Falls is a waterfall located on Cheyenne Creek in the North Cheyenne Cañon Park. The falls are named in honor of Helen Maria Hunt Jackson, a United States poet and writer who became an activist on behalf of improved treatment of Native Americans by the U.S. government. Don’t confuse her with the actress with the same name.

There is parking for about 30 vehicles at the falls and it becomes crowded early during summer months when visits to the canyon are popular among locals and tourists. The Columbine Trail, which starts at the entrance of the Park by the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center, terminates at Helen Hunt Falls.

You can hike a short distance of about 2/3 of a mile up a moderately steep trail above Helen Hunt Falls to reach Silver Cascade Falls. It’s a beautiful view from the top of Downtown Colorado Springs.

Lunch: Rocky Mountain Food Tour

A good way to explore the culinary scene of Colorado Springs is to go on a Food Tour. We embarked on the Delicious Downtown Food Tour.

On this tour, we started at Antlers Hotel in the heart of Colorado Springs to meet up with the group and learn more about the town’s rich history.

From there, we made our way to 5 different culinary destinations to get a taste of what they had to offer.

From restaurants to spice shops, we found come unique gems like Jack Quinn’s that offered great pub food like nachos made with potato chips.

The walk around town was easy as we made our way down Tejon Street going from restaurant to restaurant as well as learning of how Colorado Springs came to be.

Food Tours are a must in any city you travel to as you get to meet other tourists and even some locals. Plus, everyone is so friendly.

Happy Hour: The Rabbit Hole

The Rabbit Hole is a hip underground bar and eatery accessible through a door that looks more like a subway stop than a restaurant. With a full bar and dinner menu, The Rabbit Hole has an Alice in Wonderland theme, but with a bit of morbid twist. This is fitting, since the owner claims this space was the original city morgue.

Dinner: Four by Brother Luck

All the locals were raving about Four by Brother Luck and how he will be in Top Chef. He is no stranger to the culinary scene as he appeared on Beat Bobby Flay and won. Also he and appeared on Chopped. His restaurant – Four by Brother Luck focuses on the four providers behind his cooking – hunters, fisherman, farmer and gatherers.

The menu is split up into 4 sections to to show the four regions that has been influenced by Western European, Spanish Colonial, Native American and Latin American cuisine. You can order the tasting menu by choosing 4 courses.

When in New York, visiting as a Canadian tourist is definitely not cheap. One of the fun things we did in the evening was go to a New York Islanders vs Vancouver Canucks games. It’s pretty easy to find tickets under $10 through Stubhub. As hockey isn’t as popular as basketball, it’s pretty easy to find a good deal. There seems to always be tickets available in advance or even same day.

This blog post isn’t sponsored at all, just a big fan of the site and sharing my personal experience.

We grabbed our mobile tickets and headed to Barclays Centre. I was a bit nervous because I had my DSLR Canon camera with me and information online wasn’t clear if I could bring a professional camera with me. As we went through security, they went through my bag and didn’t even comment about my camera.

We got our physical tickets and headed to our seats. They were in the upper bowl quite high, but still easy to see the whole game. Still clear to see who as who on the ice and following the puck.

It was a great evening spent with friends watching our hometown team while on vacation. Coming from Canada, hockey tickets aren’t cheap at all. So, it was really nice to see the game for cheap. If you’re ever on the hunt for cheap NHL ticket, definitely check out StubHub for tickets.

Thinking of a quick getaway to Whistler but don’t feel like skiing or snowboarding? Relax, there’s still plenty to enjoy. Crystal Lodge and their restaurants invited us up for a weekend of food and fun and showed me that you can enjoy mountain vibes and race through the forest at high speeds in Whistler without strapping your feet into wood and fibreglass.

Accommodations: Crystal Lodge, Whistler Village

Unbeatable location (literal centre of the village), friendly and helpful staff, comfortable and clean. I stayed in a Crystal King room and found the bed super comfy to crash on at the end of a long day in Whistler. There are some unique services and perks at Crystal Lodge too. They have a complementary Ski Valet Service that can help you store your gear, help you get acquainted with the slopes and prepare you for the conditions.

Guests staying at Crystal Lodge also get discounts to various restaurants, stores and services in the Village. Details can be found on the amenities page on their website. Lucky for us, the concierge was also able to hook us up with tickets to the local nightclub hot spot, Moe Joe’s. Perhaps my favourite of all the perks however, was the complementary hot apple cider in the lobby. Nothing can kick a day off right like a tasty hot beverage.

Breakfast: Wild Wood Pacific Bistro

The best thing about Wild Wood’s breakfast menu is that there is something for everyone: from traditional breakfasts and an impressive selection of eggs bennies for a satisfying brunch, to wraps, bowls and healthy breakfast options for conscious eaters and sweet “breakfast delights” like banana bread French toast. Even within their selection of bennies there are heartier ones, lighter ones and fancy seafood ones. I went with the asparagus and Portobello. For the true bene addict, you can even get a sampler of any 3 for $18.

Lunch: Beacon Pub & Eatery

A pub with good food and good drinks is a rare find. Find one with that and a lively, friendly atmosphere, and you’re looking for apartment listings in the neighbourhood. Ok, with housing costs in BC that is definitely an exaggeration but you get what I mean. A pub that has all 3 is hard to come by.

Starting with cocktails, I would say skip the menu board and go for a Caesar. The idea of going out to Whistler and having a Caesar, a Canadian classic that can be found anywhere, isn’t what I would usually do. Their Caesar however, is exceptionally satisfying with a nice kick. I wonder if that’s why it’s served in a glass boot.

If a filling Caesar is not your jam, for a fruity twist on hot chocolate, the Raspberry Truffle is a warm delight. I also tried The Classy Lebowski, a White Russian with Van Gogh Espresso Vodka instead of plain vodka. By the description I was imagining it would be like a cold Irish Coffee but it’s more or less just a White Russian.

There is nothing wrong with going to a pub and ordering a salad. We had their Tomato + Avocado salad with some perfectly seared spice crusted albacore tuna. Big enough to share for sure.

Their Royale with Cheese burger is made with charred wagyu beef, aged white cheddar, tomatoes, buttered lettuce and their own Beacon sauce. Treat yourself and upgrade your side to some poutine. You’d think thick cut fries might throw off the balance but I think it was perfect.

Dinner: Basalt

The culinary team at Basalt’s passion for food innovation comes across in their 3 course tasting menu. Beautiful presentation and unique flavour combinations. A fair feast of flavours for $25. If you opt to add some charcuterie to your 3 courses, don’t pass up the chicken liver mousse. We had a pretty big party at Basalt and the mousse was the first to go.

A unique item on their cocktail menu, BC Sour, mixes Seagrams VO Whiskey with Skaha Impulsion Cabernet Merlot. This was my first time having whiskey and wine in a cocktail. The beautiful suspension of the wine on top makes you wonder if you should leave it separated or mix it together when you drink it. I’ll leave it up to you to experiment.

For an appetizer, I had the herbed labneh and roast beet salad with poached pear, frisee, glazed walnuts and fermented honey vinaigrette. Their artistry comes through in the thoughtful combination of flavours between the sweet pear, earthy beets and tangy labneh (greek yoghurt).

Their honey and soy glazed chem mountain pork belly on orange sesame yams with a side of house kimchi and wasabi aioli reminds me of my favourite sweet and spicy Korean fried chicken. The portions may look small but with everything else the rest of the meal, this was just the right amount of meat for me. The wasabi aioli was they to bringing to whole dish together.

For dessert there was a choice between pumpkin crème brulee and green apple tart. I snuck a bite of my friend’s crème brulee and I found that to be more satisfying. It was creamy in texture and lightly sweet. Coupled with the brownie it’s delicious.

Adventure: Ziplining with Ziptrek Ecotours

I was a little iffy about this because I am afraid of heights and hate looking down on chairlifts. It’s advertised to include a zipline with a 30-story descent and travelling over 100km/h. Turns out, ziplining feels more secure than a chairlift. I did the Eagle Tour where there are 5 ziplines in total taking about 2.5 hours to complete. Once you do the first line you’ll know there’s nothing to be afraid of. The harness is so secure and the guides take so many safety measures. Even when guiding us up the snowy hill they take such care in looking out for the guests, you’ll be in good hands. On the tour you get to learn a little about trees and nature too.

If you’re worried about footwear, non-slip and comfortable to walk in is fine. Doesn’t have to be hiking boots. I wore casual 1 inch boots similar to Doc Martins.

Arts: Audain Art Museum

Who knew there was art in Whistler! Located on the North east corner of Whistler Village is a beautiful modern passive building with giant slanted roofs and minimalistic yet intricate wooden details. Inside is a very impressive collection of BC art. Growing up in BC, in school I was taught a little about indigenous art and saw a lot of Emily Carr’s work but there is so much more to BC art.

It’s nice that these pieces have a home here and a chance to gain more exposure. I highly recommend timing your visit with their one hour tour. You get to learn things about the art and the architecture that you otherwise wouldn’t get to learn about.

How to get to Whistler by bus:

I took Epic Rides from Downtown Vancouver. Boarding is super convenient, just outside of Burrard Station on Melville street right behind the Hyatt. Non-stop round trip for $35. It drops you off in a parking lot next to the Village. It’s a fun ride if you’ve never been on the Sea to Sky highway. The driver will tell you fun facts about different areas on the drive up. There’s also plenty of luggage space in the storage compartment.

If you’re invited on a trip to Whistler but worry if you don’t do snow sports that there will be nothing to do, don’t sweat it. It’s a world class resort town for a reason.

As a local or tourist, saving money here and there is always a plus. When we were in New York, we wanted to go to the MoMA and saw that they have “UNIQLO Free Fridays“. Admission is free for all visitors during UNIQLO Free Friday Nights, every Friday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

To avoid long lines, we arrived after 6:00 p.m. I was carrying a backpack and my DSLR Camera, but they let me in with no problems and we didn’t have to check any of the items in. They just told me to carry my backpack in the front, but thats it. The line begins at the Museum’s 54 Street entrance.

With the free ticket, it permitted entry to all Museum galleries and exhibitions. Film admission is free, but a separate ticket is required.

It was crowded but not too bad at all in the Fall, plus it’s free, so there is going to be guaranteed a crowd.

One of the most popular pieces is Starry Night by Van Gogh where there is always a crowd in front of it.

For more free nights and discounts to attend MoMA, visit their discounts page to get all the different ways to get discounted entry.
