swiss-bakery-15

Swiss Bakery has been around since 1993 baking up a storm in Mount Pleasant. They made headlines years ago for creating the Frissant – fritter + croissant combo in Vancouver similar to a Cronut. Since the shop is so close to my work, a few of us came here for lunch on a beautiful Friday.

swiss-bakery-14

The space isn’t too large but there are a few seats and a large communal table. Most people did get take out.

swiss-bakery-13

What caught my eye when ordering lunch are the mini frissants! Half the guilt of eating a whole frissant. It was a few days before Valentines day, so their usual frissants were shaped like hearts.

swiss-bakery-17

Elderflower Mini Frissant was quite greasy. It sat in a paper bag on my desk and all the grease seeped out. This isn’t for those who are on a diet. Since it was a Friday, I didn’t mind. I found the flavour of the elderflower to be a bit odd. Slightly sour.

swiss-bakery-18

Coconut Chocolate and caramel Mini Frissant was awesome! That mix of chocolate and caramel were amazing.

swiss-bakery-16

Italian Salami on Olive Bread was a good lunch item to order. A good amount of salami and cheese. I got it toasted so the bread was nice and warm.

Overall, its a good lunch time alternative if you are in the Mount Pleasant area.

craft-brunch-13

Craft Beer Market is open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 2pm. It’s a huge space inside and can easily fit a few hundred people. Great for large groups.

craft-brunch-21

They have at least 140 taps available, which makes their craft beer selection massive. Plus the have a long list of wine, cocktails, and spirits. Brunch and booze? Great combination.

craft-brunch-20

Their tap system is pretty complicated but it’s very fascinating to look at.

craft-brunch-14

Four Winds Saison was what I chose to go with brunch. It has notes of flower and spice, fermented hot for a fruity ester profile. It is slightly hoppy.

craft-brunch-15

Caesars in the morning, goes well with brunch. Perhaps a mimosa would do well too.

craft-brunch-16

Hawaiian Ahi Poke is made of Ocean Wise sashimi-grade tuna, cucumber, fresh ginger, garlic and sesame soya vinaigrette served with crispy wontons on the side. We also added avocado too. It’s definitely different that the traditional poke.

craft-brunch-17

Craft Madame has sliced tomatoes with two types of bacon sandwiched between fresh sourdough, baked until crispy and topped with two fried eggs and beer mustard sauce. It comes with potatoes on the side.

craft-brunch-18

Classic Farm House Bennies has two farm fresh eggs poached with ham and served on a house made buttermilk biscuit with hollandaise and crispy hash browns.

craft-brunch-19

The egg was poached to a perfect softness. When we poked into it, it oozed and oozed. I felt the buttermilk biscuit was very thick and dry compared to the rest of the dish. The grapes that came with it seemed unwashed, and the potatoes were ok.

Overall, great beer selection but the brunch is pretty average.

sweetery-12

Sweetery Cafe + Dessert finally opens up on Saturdays. Even thought I work close by, it was always just out of reach. Seeing all their mouth water photos on Instagram, made me go a little bit nuts. I came with a friend to indulge on some coffee and waffles during brunch.

sweetery-1

It’s located on 2nd close to the Granville St Bridge. There’s free parking out front for 1 hour.

sweetery-2

There is a good amount of seating inside. We got here at around 10:30am and stayed here for both their breakfast and lunch menu.

sweetery-5

We put in our order and waited patiently for the wonderful food to arrive.

sweetery-6

Cappuccino was what I needed this morning. Nice and frothy.

sweetery-7

Eggs Benedict on Waffles comes with potatoes on the side. You have the option to have it on waffles or english muffins. Highly recommended item!

sweetery-9

We chose to have our eggs soft and they did deliver! Once I cut inside, it was so delicious and gooey.

sweetery-8

I love the option of having it on a waffle.

sweetery-11

Chicken and Waffles is what I was craving. We had to wait till 11am till they started taking orders for their lunch menu. It comes with maple syrup and hot sauce.

sweetery-10

The chicken was tender on the inside, but the exterior could have been more crisp. On the other hand, the waffle was very delicious and crisp. I guess it kinda makes up for it.

sweetery-4

Overall it was a good experience. You must get their Eggs Benedict and double baked croissants.

burdock-co-1

Burdock & Co is located in the heart of Mount Pleasant. They are best known for their family-style dining crafted from organic ingredients. I was invited to dine here with a few other bloggers and media to learn more about Burdock & Co.

burdock-co-3

Chef Andrea Carlson and her team uses local suppliers ranging from B.C. farms to local urban gardens and highlights their offerings in new and eclectic dishes.

burdock-co-2

The space includes communal dining experiences where neighbouring patrons can converse over approachable dishes, naturalist wines, craft beers, and bespoke cocktails.

burdock-co-4

Pioneering the locavore movement, the menu adapts according to local seasonal supply, providing interesting and ever-changing culinary experiences.

burdock-co-5

Alongside Burdock & Co.’s vision of sustainable dining comes a celebrated collection of naturalist wines, expertly chosen by Wine Director, Matthew Sherlock.

burdock-co-6

Agassiz Rice Congee with Halibut also has white soy sauce, fried onion, and cured yolk. As an Asian person, at first I wasn’t quite sure about this dish since I would normally see this in a Chinese restaurant. It’s not a very classy dish. More like Asian comfort food.

burdock-co-7

Tagliatelle Pasta is slathered with basil butter sauce, Fermiere cheese, and forest mushrooms. I loved the sauce! Very good!

burdock-co-8

Scallop and Green Onion Dumplings comes with a rose hip vinegar dip. It was ok, but nothing transformational.

burdock-co-9

Brioche and Smoked Marrow Pull-Apart Buns with an onion cream and sardine hash. This was a fun spin on cinnamon buns, but with a savoury touch.

burdock-co-11

Rosemary Smoked Clam with Potato Cream has pickled mussels and chanterelles. The clams and mussels were fresh.

burdock-co-14

To end off the meal, you gotta have dessert. No meal is ever complete without something sweet. They’ve got a dark chocolate pudding and then a crisp fruit tart.

burdock-co-15

Overall, the meal was delicious and they really took different types of cuisines and put a spin to it. The portions are a bit small, so it’s definitely good to come as a group and order family-style so you can try a bit of everything.

dubh-linn-gate-outer

Dubh Linn Gate is an Irish pub that recently opened in Vancouver close on Main and Terminal. They also have their original location in Whistler.

I was pretty excited when it opened because it’s only a few minutes from my office. This area around False Creek is definitely growing with new restaurants and breweries popping up.

dubh-linn-gate-inner2

The interior is quite cozy. There are long tables, booths, a bar. Even with their high ceilings, they were able create a nice vibe here.

dubh-linn-gate-fireplace

dubh-linn-gate-inner

The decor is nice and there so many little trinkets that will make you bring you back to Ireland.

dubh-linn-gate-menu

The menu is the same for lunch and dinner.

dubh-linn-gate-beermosa

Beermosa is on special between 3pm – 6pm for $4.75. I quite like this as its light and easy to drink.

dubh-linn-gate-beer

Also for their daily happy hour, they have the House Lager for $4.75

dubh-linn-gate-fries

Chip n Dips (Large – $7) comes with a bowl of fries and your choice of garlic mayo, sour cream and chive dip. The fries are quite addictive and to munch on, plus the dips are tasty too.

dubh-linn-gate-bangers-and-mash

Banger and Mash ($16.50) has Two Rivers produced custom Guinness infused pork banger, served with creamy mash, pale ale onion gravy and topped with a crispy sage leaf.

dubh-linn-gate-guiness-burger

Guinness Burger ($16.50) has 6oz St. Helen’s beef burger on a brioche bun with Guinness cheddar, roast garlic mayo, stout bbq sauce, lettuce, pickled red onions and tomato. The burger was delicious and the beef patty had a very nice flavour to it. Fries were great too.

dubh-linn-gate-pie

Steak and Guinness Pie ($16) has AAA Alberta beef cooked tender in rich Guinness gravy with spuds and carrots, baked bubbly with a flaky golden pastry top. This comes out piping hot, so make sure you don’t bite into it right away. It stay hot for a long time.

I find the drinks and food great, but the value you pay is a bit on the higher side for a pub. An entree is around $16 – $25, which is a bit much even for lunch. They don’t have any daily specials except for drinks. $14 for wings as an appetizer makes me sad.

Having brunch on the weekend is a must! One of my favourite places in Vancouver to have brunch is at Nice Cafe near Main Street and 8th Ave. It’s a greasy spoon type of cafe, that will take you back to the 90s.

You will find homestyle breakfast items on their menu like sandwiches, bennies, omelettes, and other items.

nice-cafe-benny

Blackstone Benny ($8.50) comes with delicious Kennebec hashbrowns. Inside the benny is bacon, grilled tomato, poached egg and hollandaise sauce.

nice-cafe-omelette

Spinach and Feta Omelette ($7.50) and it also come with the Kennebec hashbrowns. I really love the hashbrowns. Super crispy and its even better with ketchup and hot sauce.

nice-cafe-mushroom

Side of Grilled Mushrooms ($1.95) is a must unless you really hate mushrooms. Its grilled to perfection and slathered in butter. So good.

Overall, it’s another good greasy spoon breakfast. Service can be poor when its super busy, but since the place is quite small, you can eventually flag a server down.

glory-juice-co-outer

Glory Juice just opened their third location near Olympic Village on 2nd Avenue. Since I work close to this area, I thought I would grab a healthy lunch from this place. I brought along CoquitlamGirl to check this place out.

Also, right around the corner is Earnest Ice Cream. Best place for dessert ever!

glory-juice-co-inner

They have a few seats inside and it’s a nice open space for lunch time. A lot of people went to grab take out, so it wasn’t too busy inside here.

glory-juice-co-juices

They have so many juices available, but if you aren’t good at committing to a flavour, you can grab a sample if they have it available. The flavours range from pure veggies to sweet citrus tastes. It’s tough for a first timer to choose.

glory-juice-co-mixed-citrus

I grabbed a Small Pad Thai Salad and a small Mixed Citrus cold pressed Juice. I was feeling pretty healthy today.

The Mixed Citrus was one of the sweeter juices that had. It contains orange, grapefruit and lime. You can taste there is a dominant flavour of oranges. The juice is also organic, raw, unpasteurized, with no added water, sugar or preservatives.

glory-juice-co-thai-pad

The Pad Thai Salad came with a peanut sauce to enrobe all the veggies with its yumminess. There isn’t any noodles in the salad, but it was more like a bowl of thinly sliced vegetables with sauce and sesame seeds.

Overall, it was a good healthy lunch. The price is a tad high, but its understandable since a lot of effort goes into their juices and food, plus its organic where possible.

Cartems-Donuterie-outer

Have you found the little donut on Main Street? It’s a bit hidden if you don’t look hard enough.

Cartems Donuterie opened up their 2nd location here. Their other location is on Pender Street Downtown. They have great creative favours that have captured the hearts of many Vancouverites. I’ve had their donuts many times but I always find there are only a few outstanding donuts that I can’t get tired of like their earl grey.

Cartems-Donuterie-inner

Their space is large and is ideal for long line ups. Usually you have a backlog of people staring at the donuts and not knowing what to order.

Cartems-Donuterie-donuts

With a spread like this, it is hard. It took me a while too since I didn’t want to go with my usual order.

Cartems-Donuterie-menu

If you aren’t into donuts, I wonder why you would be here in the first place. Either way, they sell Earnest Ice Cream, Tea and Coffee.

Cartems-Donuterie-boxes

I love their wall of donut boxes. A lot of people seem to get large orders and take them to-go. It’s a great item to bring to a party.

Cartems-Donuterie-london-fog

London Fog Donut is filled with an earl grey mousse inside with the london fog glaze on top. Since I love their earl grey donut, I thought this would be a no brainer. I didn’t really like it.

Next time, I will stick with my usual earl grey donut.

Cartems-Donuterie-cappuccino

Cappuccino is what I ordered. There wasn’t a lot of foam, so I should have ordered it extra dry. I wasn’t a big fan of their espresso that they used. I found it to be quite acidic that what I am normally used to.

Overall, Cartems Donuterie makes great donuts, but I would stick with their signature donuts like earl grey, bee sting, etc. The interior is large and has a good amount of seating.

milano-coffee-cup

Milano Coffee Roasters has a hidden location in the Mount Pleasant area. It’s on West 8th near Columbia Street right across from Jonathan Rogers Park. They serve up delicious coffee, pastries and sandwiches in this awesome area.

milano-coffee-inside

It’s an cool space to work or just hang out with some friends.

milano-coffee-patio

They also have a patio area for those hot summer days. In our case, we came during on of the rainy Vancouver days in the summer, so the view wasn’t as great as on a sunny day.  We didn’t mind since Vancouver really needed the rain.

Also, if you’re out on the patio, it’s a fun place to just people watch.

milano-coffee-latte

Latte was what my coworker ordered. Nothing like a delicious latte on a cold rainy day.

milano-coffee-cappuccino

Cappuccino is my drink of choice. It has a lot of foam and they make it right here. Some other places make it like a latte. I loved the taste of the espresso and the amount of milk and foam were great.

milano-coffee-berry-sugar

Aqua Sushi + Organic Juice Bar

Making a revisit to a restaurant is always great as I always discover new things on the menu. The food at Aqua Sushi has always been of great quality and I’ve been making a lot of trips there recently for lunch. My office is close by, so it’s a great alternative to the other restaurants close by.

I recently noticed their Sashimi Brown Rice Bowls that were pretty substantial for a lunch hour meal.

aqua-sushi-negitoro-rice-bowl

Spicy Tuna and Negitoro Brown Rice Bowl ($11.50) has all the sashimi mashed up with pickled ginger, veggies, wasabi on a bed of brown rice. What I liked about this rice bowl is that you can mix up the rice, tuna and negitoro all together so every bite tastes delicious. The brown rice by itself is also very delicious.

It’s a good gluten-free alternative, but don’t forget to ask them for gluten-free soy sauce! They also have less-salt soy sauce.

Wild Salmon and Tuna Brown Rice Bowl ($11.50) has 3 pieces of tuna and 3 pieces of salmon with the wasabi, pickled ginger, greens and on top of the brown rice. A beautiful and healthy lunch. I always take a wasabi lump out as I find its too much.

bnb-cafe-counter

Brews and Bites Cafe open on Main Street near 2nd last Monday. Despite what you initially think, they do not brew beer, but they do brew coffee. My coworkers noticed this place a few weeks ago and we made it a mission to come give it a try. Since we work in the area, we basically have had coffee and eaten at most places in the area. When something new comes to the hood, we’re on it. hahaha.

bnb-cafe-inner

The interior is beautiful and has a good amount of seating. There is free wifi and is a comfortable space to work.

bnb-cafe-cappuccino-croissant

Cappuccino was delicious, nice and foamy. A good start to the day. I would be a nice touch if they had customized the to-go coffee cups rather than the generic ones.

Croissant was pretty bad. It was dense and didn’t taste very fresh.

My other coworkers got breakfast sandwiches and they all didn’t like those either and said it was too salty.

bnb-cafe-sign

I had higher expectations for this place as the space looks really nice. Coffee is decent, but the food really needs to improve if it wants to survive in this area. zipang-provisions-outer

Zipang Provisions integrates east and the west, a fusion of Vancouver with the best of Japanese cuisine. From the exterior, it doesn’t seem like a Japanese eatery. It looks more like a hip bar. They really try hard to mix the two together, but it doesn’t work very well.

Don’t get me wrong, the place looks fabulous, but you wouldn’t think they serve up Japanese food. Plus, they have a patio.

zipang-provisions-inner

Their interior has a lot of reclaimed wood furniture and awesome looking chairs.

zipang-provisions-seats

You can’t stop but love the interior. Everything is so beautiful.

zipang-provisions-cups

zipang-provisions-kale-gomae

Kale Gomae is a spin on the traditional spinach gomae. It has a delicious sesame sauce surrounding each leaf. It was an interesting concept, but we think we would have preferred it with the traditional spinach. The steams were hard and crunch.

zipang-provisions-eggplant

Nasu Dengaku is a miso glazed eggplant. It’s very delicious. It may not look appetizing, but it is yummy.

zipang-provisions-ebi-mayo

Ebi Mayo looks pretty sad but that is only because we asked for the mayo on the side. I felt that the ebi could have used more seasoning and the batter could have been more crispy.

zipang-provisions-chawan

Chawan Mushi is so delicate and delicious with a strong dashi broth and mushroom flavour.

zipang-provisions-chicken-nanban

Nanban Chicken wasn’t very good. It is deep fried chicken with their nanban sauce, which tastes like tartar sauce. To balance it out, it came with a salad.

zipang-provisions-cod

Saikyo Black Cod was a bit over cooked and wasn’t as moist as we thought and it wasn’t good.

zipang-provisions-karaage-poutine

Chicken Karaage Poutine really is a truly fusion item at Zipang Provisions. The crispy chicken, cheese curds and gravy all lay on top of a bed of crispy fries. It was enjoyed by all of us dining here.

zipang-provisions-katsu

Mille-Feuille Pork Cutlet is served with a cabbage salad with a plum dressing. On the side, there is also tonkatsu sauce. The cutlet was different since there are a lot of thin pork slices inside.

zipang-provisions-okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki wasn’t very good at all. The pancake was dense and not flavourful, then it was topped full of sauces. Best to avoid this item.

zipang-provisions-salad

Sashimi Salad was a good size to share with everyone at the table. A good amount of sashimi, but they were a tad heavy with the dressing.

zipang-provisions-salmon

Salmon Sashimi comes with 9 pieces since we ordered the larger size. The quality is there and it was enjoyable.

zipang-provisions-sushi

We ordered a bunch of sushi from their menu and we found that they were not executed very well. It was missing a bit of care and attention. All of the rolls could have been improved. It was quite sad to see.

Sunny Spot Cafe isn’t a place I would normally go to. I’ve passed by several times, but never took notice until Mags told me to come here for lunch. It is owned by a husband and wife that make all the Xi’an Street Food dishes by hand.

It’s only 2 of them working and they really make their customers feel at home.

sunny-spot-cafe-dumplings

Handmade Pork Dumplings ($8) comes with 10 pieces and are boiled. If you eat them by themselves, it is a bit bland, so you need a touch of sauce or the chilli oil to enhance their flavour.

sunny-spot-cafe-hotsournoodles

Tripe and Glass Noodle in Hot and Sour Soup ($6) is very spicy and piping hot when it comes out.

sunny-spot-cafe-noodle

Biang Biang Handcrafted Shaanxi Thick Noodles with Beef ($8) both Mags and Min ordered this dish and they thought it was good. Tasted very homey.

I’ve never been to Xi’an to tell if this is authentic or not, but the food tastes like what your parents would serve you. Good food, no fuss. nomad-lamb

Braised Lamb ($24) has fenugreek ricotta gnocchi, cauliflower, and edible flowers. Lamb was tender and not too salty.

Overall, M and I were quite full from sharing the 3 dishes. The food was great and you could see a good amount of technique in the execution. Presentation was good too. The service was ok, even though the restaurant wasn’t very full, they did seem to forget about us for a while. It took them a long time to get our bill.

Besides that hick up, it’s still a nice place to dine. Tons of seats for small or large parties. Great for after work drinks since they have the happy hour.
