IKEA Canada: HUVUDROLL Plant Ball Review

HUVUDROLL is IKEA‘s plant-based meatball alternative made with pea protein, oats, potatoes, onion, and apples gives customers a familiar experience with the similar taste and texture to its meaty counterpart, just without the meat.

The new plant ball has only 4 per cent of the climate footprint as the traditional meatball and contributes to the retailer’s ambition to become climate positive by 2030. The new recipe contains no animal ingredients, making it a delicious option for meat lovers, flexitarians, vegetarians, and vegans alike.

Canadians can now enjoy the plant ball at home – with frozen bags available for only $6.99 in Swedish Food Markets (located near the cash) nationwide.

The plant ball dish is also available for the same price at IKEA Restaurants across the country, classically served with mashed potatoes, broccoli, lingonberries and cream sauce. You can choose to dine-in or takeout, based on what’s available in their region and are advised to check online in advance to see what’s open at their local store.

Taste Test

The cooking instructions were easy so you can cook in the oven or on the stove top. The texture is very nice and you won’t notice that it’s all plant-based. The taste does have a dominant mushroom aroma.

I was almost able to convince my husband that it was their regular meatballs if there was their signature gravy sauce. Other than that, it’s a great product and we would recommend it.
