eggstatic-store

Cafe Eggstatic opened up in Crystal Mall in South Burnaby closer to the end of Summer. They serve up bubble teas and egg waffles. What has differentiated them from some other BBT shops is their use of the birds nest topping on their Summer specialty drinks.

Birds nest is typically found in Chinese cooking especially in soup and seen as a delicacy. It’s not the nest of the bird, but the solidified saliva. It is prized in Chinese culture due to their rarity, and supposedly high nutritional value and flavour.

eggstatic-drinks

Honey Green Milk Tea with Pearls ($3.50 +$0.50) came out quite sweet. We should have asked for half sweet. Good flavours, but too sweet.

Birds Nest Mango Slush Infused with Aloe Vera ($5.70) the bottom with the aloe vera chunks were very good.

eggstatic-birds-nest

The birds nest sits right on top and it really tastes like nothing, but that’s just my opinion. The strawberries were a nice addition to the drink as it adds color and it has a sour taste that paired well with the mango slush.

eggstatic-bubble-waffle

HK Style Bubble Waffle ($3.75) comes out quite crispy with a slight chewiness in the centre.

eggstatic-egg

The batter is thin, so you get a lot of hallow space in the center. Not as filling as other bubble waffles. I still enjoyed it.

eggstatic-making

Overall, it’s a good place to get bubble waffles. Great texture and I enjoy the crispiness. The birds nest topping draws a lot of people here, but depends how traditional you are.

Having brunch on the weekend is a must! One of my favourite places in Vancouver to have brunch is at Nice Cafe near Main Street and 8th Ave. It’s a greasy spoon type of cafe, that will take you back to the 90s.

You will find homestyle breakfast items on their menu like sandwiches, bennies, omelettes, and other items.

nice-cafe-benny

Blackstone Benny ($8.50) comes with delicious Kennebec hashbrowns. Inside the benny is bacon, grilled tomato, poached egg and hollandaise sauce.

nice-cafe-omelette

Spinach and Feta Omelette ($7.50) and it also come with the Kennebec hashbrowns. I really love the hashbrowns. Super crispy and its even better with ketchup and hot sauce.

nice-cafe-mushroom

Side of Grilled Mushrooms ($1.95) is a must unless you really hate mushrooms. Its grilled to perfection and slathered in butter. So good.

Overall, it’s another good greasy spoon breakfast. Service can be poor when its super busy, but since the place is quite small, you can eventually flag a server down.

Adesso-outer

Adesso Bistro is hidden in a residential neighbourhood in the West End. I’ve been searching for new places for brunch and this popped up as one of the suggestions on Zomato. Since I’ve never been, I thought it would be a good chance to have brunch and hang out with a friend. We love brunch, so we do love to explore.

Adesso-inner

The interior is nice and intimate, which is good for a dinner setting. As the building is older, we could really smell the age of the building. The smell reminded me of a museum.

Adesso-patio

They also have a patio, which is pretty awesome. Since it was cold in the morning, we stayed inside.

Adesso-omelette

Strata ($14) is a brunch dish, similar to a quiche or frittata. It is oven baked in a hot skillet. There is pancetta, eggs, oyster mushrooms, and fontina cheese. There is a cherry tomato and arugula salad with a light dressing.

It sounded like a cool dish when the waiter described it, but it fell kinda flat.

Adesso-trout-benny

Trota Hollandaise Benedict ($18) has house smoked trout , poached eggs, roasted tomato, chives, hollandaise, and spring onions. They also serve it with a tomato and arugula salad with light dressing.

Adesso-yolk

The poached egg was made to a perfect medium. I liked the use of focaccia bread instead of the typical english muffin. It gives it a nice texture and it soaks up the hollandaise and yolk a bit more.

Adesso-salad

Overall, the brunch was good if you have the bennys but it is a bit pricey.

le-tigre-foodee-delivery

Since Vancouver rains for most of the year, it does get a bit depressing to go out and hunt for food. I love Le Tigre but sometimes their truck is too far away from the office, so when we saw that Foodee delivers for them, we definitely had to do an office order. The minimum order is $40 with a $15 delivery fee. It’s not too bad if you can get a lot of your coworkers to order it with you.

Le Tigre serves up culinary inspired Asian street food and they deliver their most popular items like Kickass Rice and Crack Salad.

le-tigre-foodee-crack-salad

“Crack” Salad ($8.15) has brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage, capers, cracked chilies, lemon juice and parmesan cheese. It is vegetarian and gluten-free.

It’s such a sinful salad! I love the balance of savoury, sour, salty and spicy.

le-tigre-foodee

Angry Kitty Squares ($5.80) has crispy fried rice, kimchi, chilies, basil, spicy mayo and nori. It comes with 4 pieces and its also pretty darn delicious. The texture of the crispy fried rice is amazing.

Another item you should definitely order is their Kick Ass Rice With Pork Belly ($11.55). I forgot to take a picture, but it’s a larger dish. It’s cooked in sake, butter, dashi and topped with a perfect poached egg, fresh herbs and thai chilies. Most of their dishes seem to have chilies, but when I tried my coworkers dish, those Thai chilies are painful.

ridia-outer

Scouring for a place to eat lunch is getting quite difficult since I’ve been to a majority of the restaurants in Downtown Vancouver. It was a rainy day, so we decided to go down under into the Bentall Towers but then we realized there’s a good amount of shops and restaurants down there.

One place that caught my eye was Ridia Garden, at first I thought it was a sushi restaurant because of the word ‘garden’. Taking a closer look at the menu, they have Korean dishes as well as a lot of Western food like salad, sandwiches, mac and cheese, and lasagna.

ridia-inner

They have a lot of seating inside, so it is quite suitable for bringing a group of coworkers.

ridia-kimchi-fried-rice

Kimchi Fried Rice with Daily Soup was a large portion for lunch. The kimchi fried rice was ok, but it fell a bit flat. It definitely needed a bit more love to it. Perhaps a bit of beef to go with it. Or a fried egg would be amazing.

ridia-beef

Japchae is Korean dish made of sweet potato noodles with veggies and beef.  It was a large size too, so Mags had to take half of it back to the office. The noodles and the beef seemed a bit disjointed and you know they were cooked separately.

Overall, the food is acceptable, but not the best. The price is great for the portion.

reLiSH Gourmet Burgers just opened up their newest location on Davie Street close to English Bay. The restaurant comes from the East Coast of Canada – New Brunswick. They also have another location on Commercial Drive and will soon open another in North Vancouver.

relish-jersey-city

Jersey City Burger has fried field mushrooms , pickled peppers, pancetta bacon, provolone cheese and their ground turkey patty. The turkey patty went well with the burgers since it balances the pancetta quite nicely. The burger was not greasy at all. I felt pretty good and not too bloated afterwards.

relish-LA-is-my-lady-veggie

L.A. is my Lady Burger has sliced avocado, roasted peppers, basil pesto, creamy goat’s cheese and their veggie patty. I loved the veggie patty since it has a very nice crunchy texture on the outside. The taste of the veggie patty reminded me of falafel.

relish-the-odyssey

The Odyssey is only served in this location to represent Davie Street and the community. Inside you will find pickled red cabbage, spicy miso Sriracha glaze with a pan-fried egg. M really enjoyed this burger. You can’t go wrong with a burger with a fried egg in it. Their egg is fried till the yolk is medium, so it still has a bit of moisture without it leaking all over your hands.

relish-bun

Their bun held all the ingredients together. They only use really produce in their burgers, so you won’t find any processed cheese in their burgers. You won’t find any cheese burgers here.

camellia-sign

Camellia Tea & Coffee is a few steps away from Royal Oak Skytrain. They serve up coffee, tea and a bunch of delicious treats. During the wind storm in the Lower Mainland last week, they still had power, so people who needed a place to chill over some drinks came here. It’s not fun staying at home hoping the power will come back on…when it doesn’t for many many hours.

My friends and I grabbed a bite to eat a few blocks away and then came here to chat and have coffee.

camellia-cuter

camellia-seats

The space is quite nice and there is a lot of room. We saw a lot of large groups just chilling and some others that were just working on their computers.

camellia-latte

Latte is my usual. I got mine in their smallest size – 12oz. Good flavours and it really perked me up.

camellia-layers

Caramel Macchiato is so beautiful! Since they use the clear double layered cup, you can see the milk, coffee, foam and caramel all separated.

camellia-water

They also have mint infused water at their counter for free.

camellia-cake

On another occasion, I cam here just to get dessert for take-out. We wanted to try their desserts but were just too full to eat it in the cafe, so we took it home so we could digest a little before digging in.

camellia-cheesecake

Original Cheesecke with mixed berry compote was pretty good. Very dense but very consistent in texture.

camellia-strawberry

Strawberry and cream cake was decent, but not as exciting as the other desserts. The fruit was fresh and also had good texture.

camellia-flan

Caramel Fan was addictive. I love caramel fan. Not too sweet and I gobbled this up pretty quickly.

camellia-coffee

Overall, the desserts were pretty good! All the desserts were not too sweet and all made in-house. It’s a good place to hang out and chill with friend over coffee and desserts.

The only downside is that when you enter the store, it seems like they have a lot of rules to follow like how you shouldn’t stay longer for 2 hours, everyone has a minimum order, etc. It was a bit of a turn off, but I can understand why they have that.

Cattle Cafe on Kingsway moved a few stores from their original location. They are a Hong Kong style cafe that has a comfortable fast-casual dining experience. The Kingsway location is their flagship store as they a few more items that their other locations.

cattle-cafe-inner

The new location has more seats and better decor.

cattle-cafe-milk-tea-ice-bowl

Ice Bath Milk Tea ( Add $2 with meal or $3.99) has been trending in Asia and has finally come to Vancouver. Having the milk tea in an ice bath keeps the milk tea from being diluted. When it arrived at the table, I wished they put more ice into the bowl as it barely did anything. It only covered the bottom bit.

cattle-cafe-milktea

Iced Milk Tea (add $1 with meal) is the version with ice in the drink. It was good too and you can’t tell too much of the difference between the two milk teas. If you aren’t hardcore about your milk tea, save a dollar and get this version.

cattle-cafe-DIY

Signature Noodle Combo ($9.79) lets you choose your Soup Base/ Sauce, toppings and type of noodle. As well as a drink. My friend chose the Malay Laksa Soup with beef brisket and fish tofu. It comes with 2 toppings, but you can choose to add more for $1.59 each.

cattle-cafe-pork

Pork Chop in Cream Onion Bacon Demi-Glace with Rice ($10.59) was good as well. My friend loved the tenderness of the pork and it was very juicy. She was impressed since she has never seen pork so tender like this before.

cattle-cafe-seaweed

Mixed meat and fish balls with flat noodle seaweed soup ($9.79) was comforting on a cold day. It was pretty good with the flat noodles. Super filling and I enjoyed the subtle taste of the seaweed soup.

bao-down-door

Bao Down is located in Gastown and they specialize in steamed bun (bao) sandwiches. Just imagine an asian taco. I came here with BusanGirl to catch up since we haven’t seen each other in a little while. Bao Down has been on my to-eat list for a while, so I thought it was a great time to take a visit.

bao-down-water

The space was quite nice with infused water too! We ended up eating outside since it was a nice day.

bao-down-2worldscollide

Two Worlds Collide Steamed Bao ($6) has star anise and ginger braised pork belly, chicharon and crispy pork belly with hoi sin glaze, carrots, daikon, scallions and Korean spicy sauce.

The bun came out barely warm. I thought that it was weird that it wasn’t hot. The ingredients that make up this bao is fusion as you wouldn’t normally have chicharon and Korean spicy sauce remotely close to each other. The flavour was ok, but because the bao wasn’t hot, it made eating the whole eating process unpleasurable.

bao-down-chicken

Bao Chicka Bao Bao Steamed Bao ($6) has fried lemongrass and garlic marinated free range chicken breast, crispy garlic, palm sugar and fish sauce glaze, fresh cilantro, garlic scape mayo, pickled carrots and scallions. This bao was slightly warmer than the previous one, but still not hot enough to fully enjoy.

Since they did use chicken breast, the meat was dry so it reminded me of a chicken strip in a bao.

bao-down-kimchi-fries

Kimchi Fries (Small – $5) has housemade double fried kennebec potato fries, crispy pork belly, sweet soy, crispy garlic, bean sprouts, garlic scape mayo and scallions. This is so loaded! I can’t even imagine what the large size looks like.

The fries were very crisp and super enjoyable since its double fried. It keeps its crispyness for a long time. There are big pieces of pork belly too.

bao-down-wrapped

bao-down-grilled-cheese

Grilled Cheese and Kimchi Sandwich ($10) Smoked applewood cheddar, kimchi and miso mayo. This missed the mark of what a grilled cheese should look and taste like. There was barely any cheese in it. We mostly tasted the kimchi and a bit of the mayo. In a sense, you could call this a kimchi sandwich.

bao-down-seafood-chowder

Seafood Chowder was their soup of the day. It has a good amount of seafood inside and had a delicious creamy taste, but it was also not very hot.

I’m usually not that picky, but a majority of the food wasn’t very hot when it came out. I know I didn’t take a long time taking pictures as I’m usually pretty quick.

A few weeks ago, I was at the Squamish Music Festival to see Drake perform. Besides seeing all the other performances, we had to eat. They had this huge area with different booths and food trucks. Lots to choose from and there were a few places that the line ups were super long. It reminded me of the PNE or some sort of carnival.

Melt Town Grilled Cheese and Poutine was one of the many trucks there. Their parent company – Tin Lizzy is one of Canada’s Largest special events Concession companies. They also have a fleet of over 10 food trailers/trucks professionally built to provide food for large amount of people.

I gravitated to this truck since I was cravings some grilled cheese. They had many varieties but I had to go with the classic. Can’t go wrong with that.

grilled-chees-truck-sandwich

Classic grilled cheese ($7) was oozing with the crispy cheese on the edges. They also give you a tomato dipping sauce. I loved the crunchy cheese bits around the sides. Probably the most enjoyable part about the sandwich.

I didn’t like the bread as I felt like it needed more crispiness and butter on the bread. If the cheese is crispy, I don’t see why they can’t make the bread crazy delicious.

Nice Vice is Vancouver’s dairy-free, plant-based micro creamery. I first saw them at the Vancouver’s Farmers Market in their Nice Vice Van. They sell premium, dairy-free vice cream to Vancouverites with various flavours.

  • Chocoholics Anonymous
  • Strawberry Fiends Forever
  • Tripped Out Tropical
  • Lemonhead

4oz for $5 or 16oz for $10

I went with the Chocoholics Anonymous (4oz – $5). I chose this flavour as it is a good base test to see how it compares to chocolate ice cream.

Their containers are made out of straw so they are 100% sustainable, recyclable, and compostable.

Since the ice cream was still pretty cold when I got it, they advised us to let it sit for 10 minutes to soften before eating.

Once it thawed a bit, it was not bad for dairy- free ice cream definitely better than others.

Since I can eat dairy, I would still prefer the regular stuff. For those that do have a dairy allergy, it is a good option. From my dairy-free friends, they have said it’s a good relief to have something close to ice cream so they aren’t in pain afterwards or have to pop lactose pills.

If you don’t catch them in their van, they currently have a temporary shop at McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Richmond until September 7th.

Since it’s a beautiful summer, a few of my coworkers decided to order a group lunch from Foodee, a Vancouver food delivery service for corporate offices. There are lots of restaurants to choose from and it’s pretty hard to choose a place to pick from. Everything looks good.

A delivery fee of $15 is added to the bill, but if you have a large order divided up by the group, it’s not too much. We had to make a minimum order of $40 as a group.

starbucks-clover

When I was at the Starbucks near my workplace, I saw that they had this big clover brewing machine. There are only a few locations in the Lower Mainland that are using this machine.

It was originally created by Coffee Equipment Company, a Seattle-based manufacturer of coffee equipment, but was then bought out by Starbucks. Thus that’s why all these Starbucks locations has the Clover brewing machine.

starbucks-clover-menu

The Clover brewing machine is used on the different Starbucks Reserve coffees. If you’re getting the usual Pike, it won’t be brewed with this machine.

starbucks-clover-machine

The Clover brewing system uses Vacuum-Press technology to create the perfect cup of coffee.

You watch as a stainless steel filter lowers into the brew chamber. Hot water is added at a specific temperature to brew the coffee for an ideal length of time.

It controls brew time and temperature digitally based on the type of bean you put in. Apparently even small changes can dramatically affect the taste of the coffee. A thermal blanket surrounds the brew chamber to keep water within 1 degree Fahrenheit of the ideal temperature.

starbucks-clover-machine-fill

After the coffee brews, it is pulled through a 70-micron filter. The resulting grounds are pushed out of the top of the machine. The coffee itself flows into your cup – hot, aromatic and flavourful.

Since it was a hot day, I got it as an iced coffee. To cool it down, they fill the cup with ice.

starbucks-clover-iced

Having it as an iced coffee was still quite strong. But then again, I did get the Sumatra single origin roast coffee. It is a full-bodied dark roast coffee with a smooth mouthfeel and almost no acidity.

It’s a lot different that their regular coffees.

starbucks-reserve

All the Starbucks Reserve coffees are selected for their quality and carefully roasted to bring out their individual flavours. So you can be sure they really shine when brewed using the Clover brewing system.

Besides it’s flavour, it’s pretty fun to watch the barista use this machine. In short, it uses a brewing method similar to a French press along with a vacuum system to separate the liquid from the coffee grounds.

little-caesars-deep-dish-bacon

little-caesars-bacon

The bacon is a bit thin on the edges, but it does maintain its crispiness. Since it’s so thin, it doesn’t add too much flavour to it. Mostly texture. The whole pizza was pretty awesome, but we did find it quite oily. You’ll need a few napkins to keep your hands clean.

Fat Mao is the latest addition to Chinatown. Recently, there has been a bunch of new restaurants opening up nearby like Torafuku and Ramen Butcher. Since I work close to this area, I get super excited when something new opens up.

Chef Angus An’s (chef and owner of Maenam) newest venture serves noodle dishes inspired by a range of Asian cuisines. Recipes at Fat Mao are inspired by Chef Angus’s travels in Asia and his favourite family meals from childhood. Flavourful curries, sauces, and rice and wheat noodles are made fresh from scratch, and dishes touch on Thai, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Singaporean cuisines.

Century Egg with House Tofu ($7.99) is a nice dish to share in addition with your own individual noodles. I love this dish as the egg and the tofu are perfect matches. We were amazed by how smooth the tofu was.

fat-mao-duck

Braised Duck Noodles ($11.99) comes with a huge duck leg which was awesome. They use rice noodles rolls in this dish. I didn’t like the use of the noodles as they didn’t really match to soak up the broth. The sauce is more thin compared to some of the other dishes. The broth was bland and I didn’t like it very much.

fat-mao-sauce

The waitress also suggested to add a few scoops of the hot vinegar sauce. It didn’t really help with the flavours either.

fat-mao-curry

Koh Soi – Chiang Mai Curry Chicken ($11.99) was our favourite dish from the group. The sauce was pretty good, the chicken leg was huge and we loved the added texture from the crunchy bits on top. We would definitely recommend this.

fat-mao-beef

Taiwanese-style Beef Noodle ($11.99) was another good dish according to Anne. Its well-balanced and has a good amount of beef.

fat-mao-dandan

Dan Dan Noodles ($8.99) is made with the same noodles as the curry noodles. My other coworker enjoyed it.

fat-mao-cats

In the end, a bowl full of noodles and a shared side dish was just the right amount. Most of the dishes were fusion and the lack of descriptions on the menu may surprise some when the food arrives.
