With Covid-19 Pandemic, we are all cooped up at home with no where to go. We have been sending out a lot of gifts to family and friends to make these time a little bit more cheerful. I’ve been sending out a lot of pastries, but not coffee since drinks are a bit harder to deliver.

Luckily, Starbucks and Uber Eats is making it easier to send some much needed caffeine and treats to that special someone. The new ‘Share This Delivery’ feature launched on Uber Eats.

You submit the order like any other delivery, but make sure you know your friend’s address ahead of time. You wouldn’t want to accidentally send the order to yourself.

After placing a Starbucks delivery on Uber Eats, you will be prompted to share the delivery. Once selected, your friend will receive a tracking link as well as the option to include a message that they can share through text or email. It’s a great way to track the delivery without your friend wondering how many minutes they have until it arrives.

Starbucks Contactless Delivery

Starbucks is also providing a $0 delivery fee for a limited time (taxes/fees apply) with Uber Eats.

New to Uber Eats? Use promo code ‘eats-diana20225ue’ for $5 off a $15 order.

Alternatively, you can also order ahead and pay using the Starbucks app and pick up the order from a barista at the door or at the drive-thru.

I haven’t been able to count which day we are at for social distancing, but I do know I miss my friends and family a lot. Somedays I don’t even remember if it’s a weekday or weekend.

Molson Canadian is inviting Canadians from coast to coast to connect over a #VirtualHappyHour. As a bonus, they will reward hosts with a $25 gift card to use at their favourite local bar or restaurant. This helps bring people together while supporting an important sector.

I raised a glass with one of my favourite Vancouver bloggers – Vie A Maggi. All you have to do is take a screenshot of your Virtual Happy Hour and post it on Instagram or Twitter. I nominated one of my favourite Vancouver restaurants – Miku Restaurant, which boasts a great cocktail menu and delicious Japanese eats.

They message you to verify your eligibility as you have to be of drinking age. There is a little bit of back and forth, but your $25 gift card to your favourite restaurant or bar will be on its way.

The program runs until April 30, 2020 or while supplies last (whichever comes first). Rules on how to participate are available on the website. Follow @MolsonCanadian on Instagram and @Molson_Canadian on Twitter to see #VirtualHappyHour being featured from coast to coast.

McDonalds Canada is turning up the heat with their Spicy McChicken Sandwiches. We love spicy food, so this immediately got our attention.

Every two weeks, increasing levels of heat will be introduced to the Spicy McChicken sandwich, each highlighting a different chili pepper:

  • Jalapeño McChicken: January 29 – March 11
  • Habanero McChicken: February 12 – March 11
  • Ghost Pepper McChicken: February 26 – March 11

3 new sauces were created for these sandwiches using the 3 different peppers. This is the first time in recent history that McDonald’s Canada has changed the iconic McChicken sandwich but it’s just the sauce that is different.

The spiciness of the peppers is measured worldwide by the Scoville scale in units – the more units, the spicier it is:

  • The Jalapeño Pepper ranks 2500 – 8000 SHU on the Scoville scale
  • The Habanero Pepper ranks 100,000 – 350,000 SHU on the Scoville scale
  • And, the Ghost Pepper ranks highest on the Scoville scale, with more than 1M SHU

It is yet to been tasted if the sauces live up to the expected Scoville units. We will update this article with our review of each sandwich once each sandwich becomes available.

Spicy Jalapeño McChicken

Inside the burger is breaded seasoned chicken, shredded lettuce, topped with creamy Jalapenõ sauce, on a toasted sesame bun.

We had to order this burger twice because the first burger had very little sauce, so when eaten all together, you can barely taste the sauce because of the season chicken patty overpowered the sauce.

The second time I went, I paid extra to have extra sauce in the burger as well as the jalapeno sauce on the side to dip the fries and to truly taste the sauce.

The sauce has a slight hint of spice but very palatable. A good start to the 3 levels of spiciness as I’m sure most people can handle the creamy Jalapeno sauce.

Spicier Habanero McChicken

Inside the burger is breaded seasoned chicken, shredded lettuce, topped with creamy Habanero sauce, on a toasted sesame bun. Exactly the same as the other burger but with a different sauce.

We ordered this with extra sauce and there was more so we can taste it along with the seasoned McChicken patty. We found the similar thing as the Jalapeno McChicken where you need to have the extra sauce to really appreciate the added kick of the Habanero.

The colour of the sauce is more yellow/orange unlike the green hue of the Jalapeno.

It is spicier but isn’t too powerful to cause a sweat. We ordered this through the UberEats app, so we could customize with extra sauce but no option to have extra sauce on the side for fries.

Between Jalapeno and Habanero, we would definitely prefer Habanero as it has a little bit more of a kick.

Spiciest Ghost Pepper McChicken

The last Spicy McChicken is finally here until March 11. This is what everyone has been waiting for with their signature Ghost Pepper sauce. It has the most orange looking sauce out of the 3 Spicy McChicken options. Yet again, we ordered it with extra sauce, but this time they wouldn’t let us have extra sauce on the side for our fries for some reason. Either way, there was still ample sauce in the McChicken to really taste the sauce.

It is a stronger spice that lingers in the mouth, but it really depends on your own spice tolerance. We love spicy, so if you put it on a the “Hot Ones” scale, it is more like a 4/10. It’s definitely not for everyone and some will find it very spicy and some not at all. We thought it had a good kick of spice that coated our mouths but that might be because we ordered it with extra sauce.

As we are headed into the New Year, Jugo Juice has decided to add three new healthy, no-sugar added limited edition items to their winter menu – Mocha Protein smoothie, Jugo Java and Mango Lime Chia Pudding.

Ingredients: coffee, dates, banana, unsweetened chocolate almond milk, and chocolate whey protein powder.

Jugo Java

This beverage is also available in both the snack size and original. If you like coconut, this is your drink! The drink was fruity, with a hint of tropical notes.

Ingredients:  cold brew coffee, banana, dates, coconut milk, unsweetened almond milk

Mango Lime Chia Pudding

This new grab and go snack is delicious and convenient, it’s great for a breakfast or pick me up healthy snack.  It’s packed with great flavours, it’s not too sweet and it’s topped with Terra Breads granola.

Final Thoughts

As Halloween comes to an end, the holidays are just beginning. As the weather cools and the holiday music starts playing in malls, it’s classic to have in hand a Starbucks holiday beverage. This year they are releasing a few new items and well as welcoming back holiday classics like the Peppermint Mocha.

Here is a sneak peek of what’s new and what’s returning on Starbucks Menu across Canada.

New Items on the menu

Holiday Cups

Starbucks is launching 4 new holiday cup designs available in Canada and the U.S. beginning November 2nd, 2018. Everyone goes crazy over those classic red cups. The holiday cups feature a suite of patterns developed from Starbucks Christmas blend coffee packaging.  Each cup gets inspiration from blending traditions and styles with the common goal of bringing people together.

Reusable Red Cups

A new, limited edition iconic Reusable Red Cup launches on November 2nd and Starbucks is giving away a FREE reusable red holiday cup to customers who purchase a handcrafted holiday beverage while supplies last.

Then, between November 2nd and January 7th, anyone who purchases a handcrafted holiday beverage using their reusable red Holiday cup after 2 p.m. will receive $0.50 off their drink order. Always good to be sustainable anyway you can be.

Juniper Latte

Holiday memories are often tied to the senses – the smell of freshly cut trees, a cold breath of winter air, the sound of footsteps, crunching on snow. The new Juniper Latte conjures up these
delightful holiday moments with its evergreen aroma combined with tingly sage. Inspired by the Seattle Roastery, the Juniper Latte is a woodsy beverage that’s handcrafted to be a lighter, but elegantly flavourful wintery beverage.

Chocolate Swirl Brioche

This has layers of dark chocolate filling and a hint of cinnamon, lightly glazed with honey syrup.

Pistachio Honey Croissant

A croissant with layers of ground pistachios and sweet honey icing.

Returning Holiday Items

Chestnut Praline Latte

Inspired by the time-honoured holiday tradition of warm roasted chestnuts, this cozy beverage features Starbucks® signature espresso combined with freshly steamed milk and flavours of caramelized chestnuts and spices. The drink is then finished with whipped cream and spiced praline crumbs for crunch.

Peppermint Mocha

Experience holiday flavour in full effect with the Peppermint Mocha, a combination of espresso, steamed milk, mocha sauce and peppermint flavoured syrup. Topped with a fluffy cloud of whipped cream and dark chocolate curls, this festive beverage is just too good to resist.

My personal favourite when it’s half sweet.

Caramel Brûlée Latte

Celebrate the season with this holiday showstopper featuring a combination of espresso, steamed milk and rich caramel brûlée flavoured sauce, topped with whipped cream and caramelized crunchy caramel brûlée topping.

Gingerbread Latte

Enjoy the flavours of freshly baked gingerbread combined with espresso and steamed milk. This holiday beverage is now topped with spice-infused whipped cream prepared with cinnamon, cloves and ginger and finished with a real molasses drizzle. The Gingerbread Latte is sure to take you on a trip down memory lane to holidays past.

Eggnog Latte

Savour Starbucks wildly popular interpretation of holiday eggnog. It features a combination of espresso and rich steamed eggnog, topped with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg, this is a perfect choice for a crisp winter morning or cozy afternoon.

Holiday Turkey & Stuffing Panini

This has sliced turkey breast topped with cranberry-herb stuffing, savoury herbs and turkey gravy, served on warm and toasty focaccia bread.

Carved Ham & Swiss Breakfast Sandwich

This sandwich has maple ham, Swiss cheese and scrambled eggs on their signature croissant.

Cranberry Bliss Bar

A blondie cake base topped with sweet cream icing, tart dried cranberries and white orange drizzle.

Nanaimo Bar

A Canadian exclusive – soft vanilla custard filling layered on top of a chocolate and coconut graham base topped with a layer of rich chocolate.

With all the holiday spirit coming to a Starbucks near you, there’s a lot of choices you can make when grabbing a holiday beverage. All items are also highly customizable too. Whether you can it less sweet, more whipped cream, use milk alternatives, or turned into a frappuccino.

The 16th annual EAT! Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival is back for another year and we’re counting down with just two weeks to go. Events will run throughout the city between November 5 and 10. Attracting top culinary talent from around the world, this year’s event includes:

Charity Partner: Project CHEF Education Society

EAT! Vancouver has partnered up with Project CHEF Education Society, which is a not-for-profit society that offers experiential programs to teach children and families about healthy cooking and eating. With a purchase of a ticket to any EAT! Vancouver event, you are supporting Project CHEF. In 2017, $25,000 was donated to Project Chef through EAT! Vancouver enabling the charity to reach 556 children and 350 parent volunteers. This is important as times have changed and in our fast-paced lives knowledge of healthy eating and the associated skills are often not being transferred to the younger generation. Meals consisting of nutritionally lacking, highly processed foods are eaten on the run and rarely around a dinner table.

Cognac has been adored by many for centuries. It is a variety of brandy named after the town of Cognac in France. You can find bandy produced anywhere in the world but Cognac must be produced west of France.

Finding the very best Cognacs in Vancouver is a bit difficult, but EAT! Vancouver has launched a new event called EAT! Fine Cognac on November 6, 2018 that will being together the world’s finest Cognacs all under one roof. To heighten the experience, there will be delightful food pairings to complement the Cognac. What better way to enjoy the finer things in life?

Here are a few of the Cognac producers serving up more than 35 of the world’s most exclusive Cognacs:

  • Hennessy
  • Rémy Martin
  • Courvoisier
  • Martell
  • Château de Montifaud
  • De Luze
  • Camus
  • Bache  Gabrielsen
  • D’usse
  • Maison Gautier
  • Delamain
  • Grand Marnier
  • Mery-Melrose

Many of these Cognacs are currently unavailable in BC, but during the event all Cognacs showcased will be available for purchase at the event from Legacy Liquor. Ticket sales are limited to 200 guests, so get tickets before they are gone.

Jugo Juice has been cranking out new drinks for their 20th anniversary as well as reintroducing their classic drinks from the past. They have 6 new drinks that launched in the last few weeks for their cold brew and matcha series – Jugo Java, Berry Buzz, Outer Space, Matcha Peachu, Never Too Matcha, and Meet Your Matcha. Mega Matcha and Gold Digger are two new items outside of the series. We got a chance to try them all and here is our take on them.

Are you a cold brew lover?

Cold brew has a lower acidity compared to regular coffee, plus it gives you an extra jolt to your day. It is full of antioxidants, phytochemicals and chlorogenic acids to help support healthy blood sugar levels. Each Jugo Juice coffee-based smoothie contains up to three servings of fruits and vegetables, no added sugar, and no artificial colours or ingredients. Below are the 3 drinks with cold brew.

Jugo Java

This has cold brew coffee, bananas, dates, unsweetened almond milk, and coconut milk. It is refreshing and sweet. You will notice strong taste of banana with subtle hints of coffee. This was our favourite of the 3 drinks.

Berry Buzz

The Berry Buzz has cold brew coffee, blueberries, raspberries, no added sugar frozen yogurt, and apple juice. It’s great they partner up with Fiasco Gelato based in Calgary for their frozen yogurt. As we taste the smoothie, it has a sour apple taste with coffee after taste.

Outer Spice

There is cold brew coffee, cinnamon, ginger, banana, dates, and unsweetened chocolate almond milk. An interesting combination of ingredients which was like a chai latte.

Can’t get enough of matcha?

Matcha is Japanese green tea and it’s been a hit in cities around the world. It boosts energy, memory and overall concentration. It helps detoxify the body and has been known to protect your liver and heart. Each matcha tea-based smoothie from Jugo Juice contains up to four servings of fruits and vegetables, no added sugar, and no artificial colours or ingredients. Below are 3 of their new menu items with matcha.

Matcha Peachu

This has matcha, dragonfruit, peach, mint, apple juice, and cranberry juice. A little bit on the sweeter side and reminds us of strawberry jam.

Never Too Matcha

There is matcha, pineapple, apple, lemon, spinach, apple juice, and orange juice. You will notice the prominent pineapple taste, which is a bit sweet.

Meet Your Matcha

You will find matcha, blueberries, bananas, and unsweetened almond milk in this drink. This was our favourite from their matcha green tea menu as it is light and not too sweet.

Gold Digger

In this smoothie is mango, lemon, peaches, unsweetened almond milk, ginger, turmeric , cauliflower, and tropical juices. It is a bit bitter with the added tumeric and cauliflower.

Mega Matcha

The Mega Matcha smoothie blends the delicious and unique flavour of matcha green tea with pineapple, unsweetened almond milk and our vanilla whey protein to create the ultimate on-the-go smoothie, packed with 25g of protein plus a kick of caffeine from the matcha. It was super subtle, not sweet at all. You’d have to really enjoy matcha to like it.

Final Thoughts

With so many new drinks on the menu, you have lots of choices to add some energy into your day. Switch up your caffeine routine for something you can feel better about.

As you’re shopping up a storm this week getting all the discounts, Jugo Juice has release a few new items for the holiday season. I am a big fan of Jugo Juice as it’s a quick healthy snack while at the mall. The holiday season is a fast-paced time for many, from parties to shopping to wrapping up projects at work in time to relax. Jugo Juice‘s two limited time items – Mega Matcha Smoothie and Cranberry Chia Pudding will help keep you going when you’re out and about or just need that daily refuel.

Until January 9, if you buy a Jugo Juice gift card of $25 or more, you will receive a free smoothie of your choice. Nothing beats a little something extra for yourself.

Mega Matcha Smoothie

The Mega Matcha smoothie blends the delicious and unique flavour of matcha green tea with pineapple, unsweetened almond milk and our vanilla whey protein to create the ultimate on-the-go smoothie, packed with 25g of protein plus a kick of caffeine from the matcha. It was super subtle, not sweet at all. You’d have to really enjoy matcha to like it.

Cranberry Chia Pudding

Cranberry Chia Pudding is a quick, nutritious snack packed with the naturally delicious flavours of coconut and cranberry, topped with a blueberry and strawberry compote and Terra Breads’ artisanal granola. 7g of protein and half your daily intake of fibre will help keep you feeling full and ready to keep going. A good treat that’s healthy and filling. There’s a strong cinnamon flavour so you want to make sure you’re into that before you get it.

Mighty Kale Smoothie

We tried their Mighty Kale smoothie made with mango, spinach, kale, apple juice, orange juice, and pineapple. It’s their beset selling smoothie right now and you can’t taste the kale at all. It’s basically a treat that’s packed with nutrients. My personal favourite.

Smoothie Bowl

There are currently 3 different types of smoothie bowls Jugo Juice offers – Dragon Detox, Power Plant and Berry Benefit.

This particular bowl we tried was the Dragon Detox made with strawberries, unsweetened almond milk, ginger, watermelon, cranberry juice, and dragonfruit. Then it is topped with fresh banana, granola from Terra Breads and chia seeds. They started purchasing granola from Terra a couple years ago to make sure the ingredients were local and better for their customers.

Blue Majik Juice Shot

This is a new item on the menu made with Coconut water and blue majik powder. It’s a nutrient dense variety of spirulina, a superfood plant source of protein, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. It promotes energy, focus and balance.

With a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving dinner, it can cost anywhere from $250 to over $350 on average. My family and I have a huge thanksgiving dinner every year and it definitely is not cheap. With costs going up each year, there is an easy way to see coupons and deals from your local stores all in one place. This Thanksgiving, be thankful for cost savings this year with YP Grocery.

The YP Grocery App is free and the digital grocery experience allows consumers to create shareable grocery lists, browse the best deals from your favourite stores, keep all your loyalty cards in a virtual holder, and more. You can find 500+ flyers from 6,000+ stores across Canada, syndicating all the best deals from stores you already shop at, right to your phone. Definitely easy to manage shared grocery lists, compare prices, price match, and find deals and coupons to save on your grocery bill.

Based on a case study that tracked deals on ingredients for a typical turkey dinner over a one week period, dinner hosts can save over 25% on their groceries just by using the YP Grocery app. For a $337 dinner, this could save shoppers up to $86 at the same stores where they already shop.

Crave the Heights is back from August 16 to 30 with eateries crafting up full set menus, special appetizer deals, Happy Hour features, and after-dinner dessert selections for neighbours, visitors, and foodies to enjoy. I love the Heights and have lived in Burnaby for my entire life. The area has evolved and  lots have great restaurants have opened up in the last few years.  The full list of 2017 participating restaurants are:

  • The Pear Tree
  • La Villetta
  • Cristos Greek Taverna
  • Chad Thai
  • Butcher’s Block BBQ
  • The Gray Olive Cafeteria
  • Jane’s at the Heights
  • Caffe Divano
  • Chez Christophe
  • Glenburn Soda Fountain

I went to check out a few of these places on the list for Crave the Heights.

Glenburn Soda Fountain

Glenburn Soda Fountain has four cocktail themed treats that is only available for Crave the Heights. Whether you come earlier in the day or late at night, it’s always Happy Hour here.

This is the Cold War sundae made with vanilla ice cream, Kahlua, chocolate sauce, white chocolate ganache and chocolate pearls. The other sundaes are Mai Tai Fine, Derby Delight and Whole Lotta Cool. If you’re not into boozy sundaes, you can still indulge in their regular menu. Their milk shakes are always my favourite.

Butchers Block BBQ

Butcher’s Block BBQ has a special where you get free cornbread, iced tea, or lemonade with the purchase of any regular BBQ Platter. I got the 2 meat platter with beef brisket and pulled pork. It is also served with coleslaw and fries. We went with the free iced tea to pair with it. The BBQ was pretty good.

Gray Olive Cafeteria

Gray Olive Cafeteria is one of the newer restaurants in the neighbourhood specializing in breakfast, brunch and lunch. They are not open for dinner, but they have been plenty busy since opening. For Crave the Heights, you can find their Pork Belly Bao with a nice succulent piece of pork belly, sesame mayo, radish kimchi, green onion, and cilantro. The other feature – Fried Chicken Bao has a delicious piece of fried chicken, korean pickles, and chogochujang.

Final Thoughts

There is definitely lots to see and eat in Burnaby Heights. There’s more awesome eateries than what I included, but definitely check out what they are offering on their website. You definitely want to check out some of these menu items before August 30th.

To celebrate 50-years of McDonald’s in Canada, guests from coast-to-coast can enjoy a classic hamburger, at a classic price – in recognition of its 1967 birthday.

McDonald’s is serving $0.67 hamburgers on August 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in every restaurant across Canada, while supplies last! Limit 3 per customer.

Over the last 50 years, McDonald’s Canada has been a place where people, families and communities have come together to share many moments. While it has already been a busy year of celebrations, with the introduction of All-Day Breakfast Selections and launch of McDelivery, this special 67¢ hamburger offer tops things off.

The Captain’s Boil held a pirate-themed party on Toronto’s Tall Ship Kajima to celebrate the launch of their new Lobster Roll and Lobster Bisque. The ship was docked at downtown Harbourfront and attracted a lot of attention with its pirate flag, loud music and Instagram-worthy lobster pool floaties. As soon as we boarded the ship, we were greeted by an elaborate seafood spread. There were huge pots of shrimp, crawfish, king crab and of course, lobsters, displayed grandly like floral centerpieces at a wedding.  There was also a photobooth with crustacean and Captain Jack Sparrow-themed props which many people (me included) took part in. Within an hour, the boat was filled with hungry bloggers, many dressed in their best sailor stripes.

Spotted: a king crab trying to photobomb and take attention away from the evening’s guest of honour: the lobster

Warning: several lobster rolls were harmed during the making of this photo.

While the ship and décor were fun and engaging, more importantly, the lobster rolls lived up to the hype. Large chunks of fresh lobster were tucked in between a toasted buttery bun, with crisp lettuce and a slice of bacon for good measure. We weren’t the only ones that inhaled our lobster rolls as quickly as we grabbed them. As soon as the servers emerged from below deck, they would be swarmed by hungry bloggers. If you couldn’t elbow your way to the front, you would be left hungry, disappointed and lobster roll-less. Good thing we made friends with one of the servers who kept us happily supplied with plenty of rolls.

This cocktail went really well with the lobster – there was also a lemonade soju and a mixed berry option.

After an ungodly amount of rolls were consumed, (it’s embarrassing how many we had, all in the name of “research”), we washed them down with some refreshing mango & passionfruit soju.

One of the brave servers on deck (no one wants to tell food bloggers that they have to wait a few minutes until the next round of food)

Mmm…

Next we tried the lobster bisque. They were served in small cups that made it way too easy to shoot down, one after the other. The bisque was delicious, savoury and creamy, but balanced with a tangy spice, similar to the Cajun and Asian flavours found in the famous Captain’s Boil sauce. Every serving of bisque had a chunk of lobster. The bisque was definitely tastier than other bisques or chowders I’ve tried, as those can be too heavy on the cream and potatoes with not enough seafood flavour.

To sum it all up, here’s what I have to say: I was lucky enough to experience fresh Nova Scotian lobster last summer and with the sea breeze (ok fine, the Lake Ontario wind) blowing and the fresh delicious seafood, it (almost) felt like I was back in Halifax! Since we Torontonians don’t have the luxury of local lobster, I suggest hurrying down to the nearest Captain’s Boil if you want a similar seaside-like experience.

The Lobster Rolls and Lobster Bisque launch July 15th. Downtown Toronto is home to three Captain’s Boil locations, with 16 restaurants in Ontario.
