lays-chalet-sauce-2

Lay’s potato chips and Swiss Chalet has joined forces to create Chalet Sauce Lays Potato Chips. This was a pretty interesting partnership since I remember going to Swiss Chalet as a child. I never realized how special their dipping sauce really was.

Currently, the Lay’s Chalet Sauce chips are only available at Swiss Chalet locations, but on November 1st, you’ll soon find them at your local grocery store.

After taking a few bites of the chips, they good, but it doesn’t scream Chalet Sauce. The chip has a bit of tang at the end, but in the end it wasn’t exactly like the Chalet Sauce you would find at Swiss Chalet.

cheetos-halloween-1

As Halloween nears, Cheetos has their limited edition white cheddar Bag of bones that is shaped like skeletons. How could you not resist getting this from the grocery store? I surely couldn’t.

Inside the bag, you will find 4 different shapes – head, rib cage, feet/hands, and bones. It’s so cute once you gather enough pieces to create a full skeleton. Super kid friendly and it’s a fun activity and snack.

cheetos-halloween-2

I had a lot of fun munching away at these skeletons. I feel like I have to bring this to all the Halloween parties that I’m going to this year. Super unique and will be a hit.

chefs-plate-6

Chef’s Plate has been a popular food delivery service in Toronto, but has now expanded their services across Western Canada. You go on the website and select which meals you want to order for the following week.

They deliver portioned ingredients and detailed recipe cards for nutritious meals.

Delivery

chefs-plate-1

They offer convenient delivery, so if you are away at work during the day, the box will be waiting at the doorstep. All you have to do is choose the day that you want the box to arrive. This works great for people with homes, but if you live in an apartment building or complex without a concierge, you don’t want this sitting freely in the lobby where anyone can snatch it.

Inside the Box

chefs-plate-2

When I opened the box, there was a welcome letter and the 2 recipes that I chose for the week.

chefs-plate-4

You open up the top and you can see the 2 bags of meals I ordered. Each bag has 1 recipe.

chefs-plate-5

Under that is the protein sitting near the ice packs. By the time I got home around 6pm, the meat will still decently cold, but not as cold as I would have liked it. Since the beef was vacuumed sealed, I didn’t think it would spoil.

Recipes

chefs-plate-3

The difficulty of the recipes definitely vary, but didn’t seem too hard. Even though I choose the Steak Provencal, which has a hard difficulty. Following the recipes were ok, but some of the steps were inconsistent or confusing.

Steak Provençal

chefs-plate-8

Looking at the ingredients that came out of the bag, the tomatoes were squashed and the yellow squash was a tad bruised. I guess all the tossing on the airplane ride took its toll on these veggies. When looking closely at the package of beef, it kept saying local, but it’s local to Ontario rather than BC.

They do claim “Locally sourced specialty ingredients that are fresher than the supermarket”, but I didn’t get the sense when the ingredients arrived. Talking to a few friends in BC that received this too…their produce wasn’t fresh.

Even thought the produce wasn’t 100%, I still went ahead and cooked it anyways. I think I did a pretty good job. I really liked the smashed potatoes. A pretty good idea and I’ll most likely copy it for future dinners.

chefs-plate-10

Poricini Mushroom

chefs-plate-7

The produce for this was definitely better than the Steak Provençal. With this recipe, I found that it required to many pans, and also too many steps. I would have been able to create something similar using just one pot.

I found the sauce to be a little bit sparse, but thats just me.

chefs-plate-9

Overall

I am pretty torn about this type of service. It’s convenient to have a pre portioned recipes arrive at the door and not worry about being at home to receive the package. But, on the other side, the recipes aren’t too overly complicated. If it’s your first few times cooking, this might be for you.

What annoyed me the most was how the produce wasn’t too fresh due to the plane journey. Also, their claim of locally sourced products, but you don’t know where they are actually from. If you’re on the West Coast, their local is different from our local.

The price is decent and I can see it being helpful for those who don’t have time to shop for groceries or meal plan.

lays-do-us-a-flavour-2016-2

Canadians have voted and the results are in for 2016. The 2016 Lay’s Do Us A Flavour World Favourites are:

  • Bacon Poutine
  • Cheese & Onion
  • Thai Sweet Chili

The flavours were inspired by Canada, United Kingdom and Thailand. Every time Lays comes out with new special flavours, I just have to give them a try. I always share with my coworkers too so I can see the reaction on their faces.

Bacon Poutine – Canada

lays-do-us-a-flavour-2016-3

This flavour is inspired by the classic French‑Canadian dish. It combines cheese curds, rich gravy and smoky bacon flavours. It was a clear consensus that this flavour was pretty bad. The artificial smokey flavour really turned us off from these chips. It reminded me more of an odd BBQ taste.

Cheese & Onion – United Kingdom

lays-do-us-a-flavour-2016-4

This flavour was inspired by the timeless ingredients used in British cooking. It combines the flavours of sharp cheddar cheese with savoury onion.

This reminded me of funky sour cream and onion chips. I didn’t particularly take a liking to this. Reactions with my coworkers were mixed with this one.

Thai Sweet Chili – Thailand

lays-do-us-a-flavour-2016-5

This flavour was inspired by the iconic dipping sauce from Thailand. The chip has a mix of sweet and spicy with aromatic garlic and chili pepper flavours.

Thai Sweet Chili was a clear winner with the few people I tried these with.

lays-do-us-a-flavour-2016-1

You can find these 3 flavours in stores now for a limited time.

yvr-food-fest-20

Have you seen Tubify around town selling their organic craft freezies? You can find them at special events around town or near Science World. It’s been a while since I’ve had freezies. I would remember our freezer would be stocked with them during the hot Summers.

tubify-1

They have 7 flavours to choose from and they retail for $4. They use organic ingredients, filtered water and Fair Trade products. It is also certified Vegan.

Here are a few of their flavours:

  • Raspberry Raven Lemonade
  • Minty Moose Limeade
  • Blueberry Elephant
  • Coconut Koala Cold Brew
  • Strawberry Thunderbird
  • Mango Tiger
  • Triple Berry Iced T-Rex

tubify-2

Blueberry Elephant is packed with organic blueberries, organic not from concentrate orange juice, organic extra virgin olive oil, and Fair Trade organic evaporated can juice. Great for berry lovers and you can see a lot of the blueberry bits inside.

Raspberry Raven Lemonade has filtered water, organic raspberries, not from concentrate lemon juice and Fair Trade organic evaporated cane juice. Can can taste the bits of raspberries inside, but the lemonade made it pretty sour.

Strawberry Thunderbird has organic BC strawberries, organic, not from concentrated orange juice, organic extra virgin olive oil and Fair Trade organic evaporated cane juice. Has a dominant strawberry taste and it was very good.

Minty Moose Limeade has filtered water, organic not from concentrate lime juice,  Fair Trade organic evaporated cane juice and mint. I wasn’t a fan of this flavour. It was very sour and the hints of mint didn’t work too well.

Coconut Koala Cold Brew has a very strong coffee taste with the hints of coconut.

tubify-3

Overall, the freezies do taste great and will relieve you from the blazing Summer heat. At $4, it is pretty pricy, but they do go above and beyond with the ingredients they put inside.

Not sure where to find them? Check out their website.

stanley-park-summer-sunsetter-2

Stanley Park Brewery has their seasonal house brew – SunSetter Summer Ale to really ring in the Summer.

I was invited to one of Stanley Park Brewing’s event to kick off the summer and enjoy some of their new beer.

stanley-park-summer-sunsetter-3

As you know, I love my light beers and upon the first few sips, I really liked it. Light and fruity beers go really well with the hot summer heat.

stanley-park-summer-sunsetter-1

It has a ripe peach flavour and bold Citra hops that come together to create a refreshing wheat ale.

You can find it in stores in cans or bottles. Most liquor stores should carry their beers.

pringles-hot-diggity-dog-1

Pringles just released a new flavour called hot diggity dog that simulates hotdog and mustard flavour. I went to Superstore and I found it on sale. Of course, I can’t say not to snacks that are on sale.

pringles-hot-diggity-dog-2

Taking the first few bites, I got a hint of mustard and smokey flavour. It doesn’t scream hot dog, but it’s close enough.

It was good, but still, nothing can beat the amazing flavour of ketchup or all dressed chips.

bc-tree-fruit-cider-1

BC Tree Fruits Cider Co has introduced 2 more flavours this year – the Apple & Hops and the Pear Ciders. Their original Apple cider debuted last year. They pride themselves of using no added sugar, water or concentrate. Also, no use of artificial flavourings or colours.

They send me their line up of ciders to give them a try.

Apples

bc-tree-fruit-cider-4

Apple is their original craft cider, blended from 6 different BC Tree Fruits apple varieties.

It is well-balanced with no added sugar or flavours. It proudly lists only one ingredient on the can – BC apples. Also, it’s naturally gluten-free, with a traditional full bodied, and refreshing taste. It has 5.5% alcohol.

Apple & Hops

bc-tree-fruit-cider-3

Apple & Hops is the new dry-hopped cider. It contains 6% alcohol, which is the strongest of all 3. It tastes dry with hints of grapefruit. It’s not too hoppy in my opinion but it was a nice cross between a beer and cider.

Pear

bc-tree-fruit-cider-2

Pear is another new cider made from BC-grown pears. I has 4.5% alcohol, which is the lightest of all 3. It is bright and crisp tasting if tropical fruit with hints of melon.

All 3 kinds were good and not overly sweet, which I found was a problem with other ciders in the market. Of all 3, I liked the Apples & Hops flavour the best. I was surprised since I usually don’t like overly hoppy drinks. Great for patio weather.

You can find these at select BC Liquor Stores, independent beer and wine stores, and restaurants.

pc-Summer-insider-4

Summer is here and what better way to celebrate than having a picnic outdoors with friends. President’s Choice took a few of us out for a picnic at Stanley Park to give us a nice sneak peek of the Summer PC Insiders Collection and some recipes to go with those products.

I go to Superstore a few times a week and I’ve been a fan for a long time. Below are a few items that I enjoyed and would remake for my Summer celebrations.

Grilled Bread with Lemon Ricotta and Tomatoes of Yore

pc-Summer-insider-5

Pretty simple to make and you just pile the ingredients on top of each other. Very fresh and showcases the amazing combination of ricotta and tomatoes.

Melon with grilled Halloumi cheese, arugula, radish and pistachio

pc-Summer-insider-6

A great combination and halloumi cheese is an excellent cheese to grill since it won’t melt easily due to it’s high melting point.  The cantaloupe-like melon brings the sweetness, and arugula and radishes give this salad a peppery bite.

[tabs tab1=”Recipe” ]

[tab id=1]

Serves: 6
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Ingredients:

  • Half melon, halved, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 pkg (250 g) PC Halloom Semi-Soft Unripened Cheese, cut crosswise in 8 slices
  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cups (500 mL) loosely packed baby arugula
  • 2 medium radishes, thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbsp (25 mL) chopped roasted pistachios

Directions:

  1. Preheat barbecue to medium heat; grease grill. Arrange melon slices on a serving platter; set aside.
  2. Toss cheese with 1 Tbsp (15 mL) of the olive oil and the pepper. Grill 2 to 3 minutes, turning once halfway, or until lightly charred and softened.
  3. Whisk together remaining 2 Tbsp (25 mL) olive oil and lemon juice. Combine arugula and radishes in large bowl; toss together with half of the dressing.
  4. Arrange grilled cheese on top of melon. Scatter salad on top; sprinkle with pistachios and drizzle remaining dressing around platter.

Grilled Pico de Gallo Shrimp

pc-Summer-insider-8

This was one of my favourite appetizers! The Mexican-inspired pico de gallo salsa acts as both marinade and sauce in this brightly-flavoured barbecued shrimp appetizer.

Thai Mango Salad

pc-Summer-insider-9

This Thai take-out favourite is easily made at home. Don’t worry about how ripe the mangoes are, it is equally delicious made with green (unripe) mangoes; in fact, it is easier to cut an under ripe mango although it is more tart.

[tabs tab1=”Recipe” ]

[tab id=1]

Serves: 5
Prep time: 20 minutes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Ingredients:

  • 1 small clove garlic, minced
  • Half red finger chili, sliced in thin rounds (with seeds)
  • 1 Tsp (5 mL) granulated sugar
  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) fresh lime juice
  • 4 Tsp (20 mL) fish sauce
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) PC 100% Pure First-Pressed Canola Oil
  • 2 PC Flavour Burst Kent Mango
  • 2 carrots, cut in thin matchsticks
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • Half sweet red pepper, cut in thin matchsticks
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) lightly-packed cilantro leaves
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) lightly-packed leaves PC Fresh Mint
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) PC Dry Roasted Lightly Seasoned Peanuts, chopped

Directions:

  1. Stir together garlic, chili, sugar, lime juice, fish sauce and oil in large bowl until sugar is dissolved. Set aside.

  3. Add mangoes, carrots, onions, pepper, cilantro and mint to lime dressing in bowl; toss to combine. Transfer to platter; sprinkle with peanuts.

TIP: A mandolin is the best tool to achieve evenly julienned vegetables in the minimum time.

Grilled Jalapeño Brisket Burger

Loads of Spinach & Parmesan Atlantic Salmon Burgers

pc-Summer-insider-12

I usually don’t like Salmon Burgers, but the PC Loads of Spinach & Parmesan Atlantic Salmon Burgers was so good! It was one of the top items of this picnic.

pc-Summer-insider-2

A few items that I would want to stock up in my fridge this Summer would be the PC Loads of Spinach Parmesan Atlantic Salmon Burgers, PC Sriracha Mayo Sandwich Spread, PC Cream First Speculoos Cookie Butter Ice Cream, and the PC Pico Di Gallo Mild Salsa.

baron-samedi-1

Baron Semedi is a new Spiced Rum that has launched in Canada from the Gruppo Campari. Later in the year, it will be available in the United States, Australia and Mexico.

The 750ml bottle has the full flavour spiced run at 45% and 90 proof. It has Caribbean column still rum and small amounts of Jamaican pot still rum with cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon and their signature pice – Vetiver.

Vetiver gives it earth and woody notes when drinking.

baron-samedi-2

When you pour it out, it has a dark mahogany colour to it.

When we took the first few sips, it was smooth and rich. We don’t usually drink rum straight, but it is a good spiced rum to mix with Coke.

baron-samedi-3

The Baron Samedi was one of the most notorious Vodou spirits since the 18th century. He was known to be raucous, unruly and loved his rum. A perfect fit for this rum and the art on this bottle

It retails for around $29.95.

wanderoot-cider-1

Wanderoot Craft Cider is a new product available in BC, Alberta and Ontario since April 2016. It is a new product from Molson Canadian.

It is sparkly, medium-sweet and full of juicy Canadian apple flavours. It reminds me of apple juice, so it is very easy to drink. At 5.1%, I could easily get drunk off this.

wanderoot-cider-2

Cider is always great to drink during the hot summer. This particular cider pairs well with pork or soft creamy cheeses like brie and camembert.

With more and more companies breaking into the Craft Cider market, it’s pretty interesting to see.

Websitehttp://wanderoot.ca/

madjack-1

Mad Jack joins Molson Coors Canada’s line of flavoured malt beverages. It combines the classic tastes of root beer and ginger ale that we know and love with its bold malt flavour.

They also have their Apple Lager, but I didn’t get a chance to taste that.

madjack-2

Premium Ginger Mad Jack is a combination of Ginger Ale and Beer.

It is golden yellow in colour and has medium carbonation. For the first few sips, it has a sweet ginger taste but kinda reminded me of a cooler. It’s good for people who like sweeter drinks that don’t have a hoppy after taste.

madjack-3

Premium Hard Root Beer Mad Jack has a medium carbonation and has an amber colour to it when poured. It has notes of vanilla with cinnamon and sweet caramel. You definitely know it’s a root beer. In a sense, its like a grown up root beer with that 5% alcohol.

This isn’t a drink for all. As a beer lover, I didn’t take a particular liking to either of the drinks. I think this would have a been a drink I would have liked more when I first started drinking, but after my tastebuds got used to drinking beer, I prefer more light effervescent beer.

Mad Jack is good for those who like a sweeter beverage with an alcoholic kick on a Summer’s day.

iogo-pouches-1

iögo has introduced their new resealable yogurt pouches.

One problem I hate about buying yogurt is that there can be excess waste especially if you buy the individual cups. All that plastic ending up in the trash. Larger tubs are an alternative, but because of the large lids, I’ve been known to be a bit clumsy and had it spill all over the counter. To ease all that, iögo created these pouches to solve that problem.

Imagine a super large drinkable pouch of yogurt. The shape is pliable so you can really squeeze it in a small crevasse in the fridge. The spout is small and resealable, so the yogurt will last longer. The whole pouch is recyclable too.

I’ve had their brand of yogurt since they first launched a few years ago. It’s available at most major grocery stores, the price is good, and tastes good.

The pouches come in:

  • iögo Original in Vanilla and Strawberry.
This is their original line of creamy yogurts.
  • iögo Probio in Vanilla and Strawberry.
This probiotic yogurt has 25% less sugar than the original flavours.
  • iögo Greek in Vanilla 2% and Plain 0%
This thick and creamy yogurt has 18g proteins per serving of 175g.

You can easily just squirt the yogurt into the bowl and eat, but because these pouches are big, you can make a few easy treats with them.

Below are a few ways that I enjoy eating yogurt.

Morning Breakfast

iogo-pouches-3

I like to keep it simple especially in the morning since I have no brain cells to whip up anything special. Less ingredients the better.

I like their iögo Original or the iögo Probio as a morning snack as it is sweet enough. I personally prefer my yogurt a little sweet.

iogo-pouches-2

I pour out the Strawberry yogurt into the small 4oz mason jars and then add granola, chia seeds, and pistachios. Just some added texture to give it a nice crunch.

Very simple and if you are in a hurry, you can screw on the lid and take it to work.

M husband on the other hand likes his yogurt plain with no added toppings to it.

Mango Lassi

iogo-pouches-mango

With the iögo Greek plain flavour, as it is not sweet, it goes well with blended drinks. Plain Greek yogurt is hard for me to eat alone, so creating an easy mango lassi was a way to add in extra sweetness.

I mixed in mango purée, the yogurt, and milk to create it. Very simple and you only need 3 ingredients.

iogo-pouches-mango2

If you have kids, its a great way to make them eat yogurt.

All 3 different types of iögo yogurt pouches are good for different purposes, but if I had to choose a type, it would be the iögo Probio Strawberry. I got a little bit of a sweet tooth.

I honestly do like the design of the pouches as there is less waste. I’ve even noticed my husband consuming more yogurt since we brought these home. As the opening of the pouches are small, I don’t have to worry about spoilage. With the yogurt tubs, I get easily weirded out when I see the clear liquid sitting on top even though its natural and safe to eat.

smart-food-popcorn-1

Smartfood Popcorn has their classic flavours – White Cheddar Cheese, Movie Theater Butter Flavoured and Creamy Dill. They also recently released their new Jalapeño Cheddar flavour.

I was sent one of each flavour, so I tried them all with my coworkers.

smart-food-popcorn-2

The popcorn packaging also underwent a facelift. They moved from a colourful packaging to more of a matte black with half the colour it used to. Despite the new look, it’s the same good ol’ popcorn inside.

smart-food-popcorn-10

White Cheddar is my favourite flavour of all time. It is gone so fast! We had 2 bags in the office and it got snatched up so quickly.

smart-food-popcorn-11

As innocent as it looks, it is coated with white cheddar flavouring. I get excited when I score that one popcorn kernel that has a ton of white cheddar.

smart-food-popcorn-7

Movie Night Butter Popcorn is great for that classic popcorn taste with an even coating of butter.

smart-food-popcorn-6

Good for accompanying your weekend of movies or binge watching a Netflix series.

smart-food-popcorn-8

Creamy Dill still came in it’s orginal packaging, but I’m sure in stores, it should be the new one soon.

smart-food-popcorn-9

This flavour was ok, but reminded me of dill and cheese. Would be interesting if they tried a dill pickle flavoured popcorn.

smart-food-popcorn-4

Jalapeno and Cheddar is the newest flavour they introduced into their line of popcorn.

smart-food-popcorn-3

It has a strong taste of cheddar and then a nice kick of jalapeno. Very good.

smart-food-popcorn-5

Of all the flavours, White Cheddar still reigns supreme. It’s usually gone very quickly as people grab massive handfuls of it. To hid it from people I usually hide it in the pantry, but there’s always that one person that finds it and finishes off the bag. There’s really nowhere else to hide it but in your tummy.

lays-5

Lay’s Canada introduced 2 new flavours on store shelves to promote this year’s Lay’s Do Us A Flavour Contest – Wasabi Ginger and Bacon Mac & Cheese.

I love grabbing up a few unique flavours to bring to the office for my coworkers. It’s so funny to see the faces of disgust to joy.

lays-1

Bacon Mac & Cheese was a flavour introduced in 2014 for the American Do Us A Flavour Contest, but didn’t win.

lays-2

It is on their regular chip and just tastes like cheddar with a smoked flavour. In a sense, close but not close enough to the bacon mac and cheese flavour.

lays-3

Wasabi Ginger on kettle cooked chips was the winner of the 2014 American Lay’s Do Us a Flavour contest. I remember grabbing this bag from Seattle and getting so excited because it is a weird flavour.

lays-4

You definitely get a strong taste of ginger then a bit of ginger that hits the nose. I did like the Kettle chips as it is a bit thicker than normal chips, so it adds an extra crunch. Interesting, but not my favourite.

If you want more unique flavours to try, get voting to see what will get made next.

This year’s potential flavours are inspired by well-loved recipes from across the globe. Instead of fan-submitted entries, Lay’s is showcasing 12 flavours from three categories that they have preselected:

  • Iconic Ingredients: Magic Masala, Pico de Gallo, Paprika and Thai Sweet Chili
  • Home Cooked Classics: Cheese & Onion Chicken & Waffles , Picanha Steak and Spicy Hot Pot
  • Street Food: Bacon Poutine, Chicken Kebab, Fries with Joppiesaus and Ribs on the Bar-B

Since they can’t produce all 12 flavours, they need help choosing the best 3, 1 from each category.

The winning flavour from each category will be added to store shelves in Fall 2016.

Haywaire-lunar-wine-1

During our Chinese New Year dinner at home, I was sent 2 bottles of Haywire’s Lunar New Year Red & White to celebrate the year of the monkey. I headed to my parents place with both wines to enjoy them with our dinner.

Both wines are crafted to work in perfect harmony with Chinese cuisine. The blends of wine are tweaked for Chinese dishes based off the types of grapes they use. Both wines cost under $20 and was sold in limited quantities for Chinese New Year.

Haywaire-lunar-wine-2

The Lunar Red is made from Gamay Noir and Syrah. When you drink it, it has a blackberry finish with slight caramel notes. It pairs with stir fried vegetables, grilled sable fish, or BBQ duck.

I’m not a red wine drinker, so I gravitated more to the white wine.

Haywaire-lunar-wine-3

The Lunar White is a blend of Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay with small amounts of Pinot Gris and Viognier. It has aromatics of spice and floral notes, and coats the palate with tropical fruit while retaining delicacy and freshness. You will want to pair this with seafood, as well as fried noodles or rice.

If you are heading to others places for Chinese New Year next year, grab a bottle or 2 of Haywire Wine’s Lunar Wines to celebrate. It pairs well with the dishes and its a fun item to give others. What other wines are made especially for this occasion?

As I had a bag of the Ketchup Doritos to munch on, it was surprisingly good. You have the taste and texture of the corn tortilla with the addictive ketchup flavouring coating each chip. I really enjoyed it and the next day, I went to Shopper to bag a few more bags.

Here is a coupon for $1 off Ketchup Doritos: http://coupons.websaver.ca/en/doritos
