Scaddabush-menu

An Easter Long Weekend in Toronto means a lot of people leave town, but M and I came to visit some friends, but realized a lot of restaurants were closed or fully booked with reservations. Looking at Open Table to see what was available, we got curious about Scaddabush on Younge Street. They also have a another location in Mississauga.

The are an Italian restaurant serving up meatballs, pasta, fresh mozzarella, and pizza.

Scaddabush-inner

The interior looked pretty cool. It’s also great for large groups because we saw a huge group come here for a birthday party. Maybe about 25 people.

Scaddabush-window

They make all their Mozzarella in-house from 5pm – 11pm. They even tell you exactly who made it. It’s a nice personal touch. There is also a window where you can watch them make it.

Scaddabush-mozarella

Buratta ($11.98) is infused with honey and truffle cream, comes with focaccia crostini.

Scaddabush-meatball

Straight Up Meatball comes shareable on focaccia crostini, cheese sauce, garlic chips, and fresh basil. It is about half a pound.

You have two choices to choose from:

  • Straight-Up Meatball (Classic) $12.28
  • Straight-Up Meatball (Stuffed) $12.68

Scaddabush-meatball-inner

Straight-Up Stuffed Meatball ($12.68) it is stuffed with pepperoni and mozzarella. Theres a good amount of pepperoni inside.

Scaddabush-burger

Italian Burger ($14.92) has certified Angus Beef, bruschetta, baby arugula, fried fresh mozzarella, balsamic reduction, pesto aïoli, and served on artisanal bread. You get your choice of side and Fabo chose fries.

Scaddabush-bolagnese

Bolognese (Small: $11.97)  has fresh fettuccine, classic Northern Italian meat sauce, and lemon herbed ricotta. There are two more additional sizes – Large ($14.97) and Social ($26.20).

The bolognese was ok, a decent amount of meat, but it’s not overflowing with sauce. The server warned me about this dish because a few people have complained saying there wasn’t enough sauce. I found there was a perfect amount of sauce.

Scaddabush-parm

Veal Parmesan ($18.92) is panko breadcrumb crusted, melted fresh mozzarella, special spices, served with spaghetti with tomato basil sauce. You can also get chicken parmesan for $18.24.

This dish was quite expensive for what you get and the quality was ok.

Scaddabush-pasta

Pesto Pollo (Small – $13.97)  has fresh fettuccine, sautéed chicken, baby spinach, semi sun-dried tomatoes, and basil pesto cream sauce. There are also two sizes available too – Large ($17.77) and Social ($31.10).

Overall, fun atmosphere with friends, but food and service was average.

Sansotei-Ramen-outer

The Globe and Mail rated Sansotei Ramen one of the top 5 spots for ramen in Toronto. As a Vancouverite, we have some top notch ramen places and it’s pretty hard to beat. Of the top 5 list, I skipped Hokkaido Ramen Santouka as we have it in Vancouver too.

Sansotei has their second location open on Younge Street and we don’t have Sansotei in Vancouver, so I really wanted to see how it faired amongst the other ones in Canada. Plus, a delicious bowl of noodles for a cold Toronto evening is much needed.

Sansotei-Ramen-wall

The interior walls were pretty cool with the textures. The restaurant was pretty small and can get quite busy during peak hours. Since it is still new, the word hasn’t spread too far yet.

Sansotei-Ramen-cover

Sansotei-Ramen-menu

Everything is under $10 and there are 6 different types of ramen to choose from:

  • Tonkotsu
  • Tonkotsu Black
  • Miso
  • Shio
  • Shoyu
  • Spicy TanTan

Sansotei-Ramen-tea-water

Cold Barley Tea ($2) was what M ordered. Fabo and I chose regular water. The cold tea was refreshing, but it was a bit pricey. It was a nice change from Green Tea.

Sansotei-Ramen-dumpling

Gyoza ($4.50) comes with 5 pieces and ponzu sauce. Slightly crisp on the outside and a yummy savoury filling.

Sansotei-Ramen-karaage

Zangi ($4.50) is deep fried chicken. It was very good!

Sansotei-Ramen-ramen

Tonkotsu Black ($9.85) has pork belly, black fungus, egg, green onion, and garlic oil. M and Fabo thought the broth was very rich. The egg was perfect and runny.

Sansotei-Ramen-tantan

Spicy TanTan ($9.60) has limited quantities each day. It has pork belly, ground beef, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, green onion, and egg. It was good, but was lacking something. The pork belly was delicious and tender. The egg was oh so good too.

Overall, the ramen was good but Santouka is still better.

hemmingways-patio

Finding good brunch places on the Friday on the long weekend was tough. The places we wanted to go to were closed, so we had to wander near Yorkville for some food. It was really tough, so we settled for Hemingway’s Restaurant and Bar.

Hemingway’s has been around for over 30 years with a New Zealand inspired menu. Their 3rd floor patio is huge. Much better than sitting on the first or 2nd floor where it is much more dark .

hemmingways-benny

Eggs Benedict ($9.99) has two soft poached eggs served on a toasted English muffin, layered with grilled peameal bacon
and topped with hollandaise sauce.

hemmingways-yolk

The egg was soft and yummy. The english muffins were quite thin and it worked well with the eggs benny since you can really taste the egg and bacon.

The only downside of this dish were the potatoes. Tasteless and bland.

hemmingways-burge

The Down Under Burger ($13.99) has ground beef patty, fried egg, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, relish and a slice of beetroot. Garnished with a slice of tomato, onion, pickle and lettuce, served on a lightly toasted Kaiser bun. We wanted to add a slice of pineapple for $0.50, but they didn’t have any available.

M substituted with yam fries and man, those are some awesome yam fries.

hemmingways-burger

Classic Cumberland Burger ($9.99) has ground beef and garnished with a slice of tomato, onion, pickle and lettuce, served on a lightly toasted egg bun. Fabo also substituted her fries for yam fries.

The food was decent, but what was the best were those yam fries for some reason. It was crispy on the outside and so smooth on the inside.

darkhorse-cup

When exploring Toronto, always ask the locals where to go. Dark Horse Espresso Bar popped up in that list and we were on our way! We like a good cup of coffee and Starbucks or Tim Hortons wasn’t going to cut it.

There are 4 locations of Dark House all around Downtown Toronto. We went to the location on Queen West. A lot of people have said this is the best coffee in Toronto. Huffington Post says its a great place to do some work. Also on BlogTO, best cafe on the West Side.

darkhorse-inner

The interior was narrow and had seats along the wall and a bit more in the back.

darkhorse-menu

They have a good variety of coffee. Even French Presses and Pour Overs if you have time to stick around. I find that it’s a nice place to hangout with friends.

darkhorse-barista

Once you order at the counter, you wait for your beverage to be created by their amazing baristas. I love hearing the sound of milk being steamed.

darkhorse-cappucino

Cappuccino ($3.33) was delicious. It had a nice bold espresso flavour with the lovely heart on top.

The place was packed on a weekend, but some tables freed up quite quickly.

wandas-waffles

Who likes waffles? I like waffles. When I was in Toronto for vacation, I was looking for some dessert after dinner. Something kinda walkable from Eaton’s Centre. There were lots of options but a lot of them closed early. Wanda’s Belgian Waffles popped up on my Urbanspoon app, as well as the Yelp app. Reviews were decent and how can you go wrong with waffles?

The pictures looked decent and we thought it would be a nice place to hang out.

wandas-waffles-menu

When we arrived, we ordered from the window. The man was a bit rude and pushy when it came down to ordering. It wasn’t a very good first impression. We watched the man grab a ball of dough and stick it onto the waffle iron. It was pretty sad to watch the grumpy man make our waffles.

When we got our order, we didn’t know there was another counter inside to order. We would rather order from the inner counter rather from the window as we were dining in.

wandas-waffles-caramel

Ice cream special ($4.79) has the liege waffle topped with ice cream, caramel drizzle and powdered sugar. The liege waffle was very doughy and you could tell there was a lot of sugar in it. I kept biting small sugar crystals.

wandas-waffles-strawberry

Strawberry Special ($7.49) has the liege waffle with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. This one was the better one out of the two waffles we got. Lot of strawberries and whipped cream covering the liege waffle. The liege waffle was also quite doughy and dense.

This place was ok, but nothing impressive here. After trying Nero Belgian Waffle Bar in Vancouver, nothing else can compare. Sometimes I hate being a tourist because I can never make good food decisions in a city I am not familiar with.

KFC-Select-outer

KFC Select is a new concept restaurant to attract younger customers. This location close to Younge and Bloor is the first location to pop up in Canada. They are still sticking with what they do best … making chicken. Except, you won’t find any big buckets of chicken here.

The location opened last December and the exterior is mostly black to give it a modern look.

KFC-Select-inner

You can even find images of Colonel Sanders inside.

KFC-Select-counter

The interior reminds me of Chipotle. It’s very very similar.

KFC-Select-menu

They have 5 main items:

  • Chicken Burgers
  • Burritos
  • Bowls
  • Salads
  • Chicken Strips

Then you can choose to make it a combo or add any extra desserts. Interesting desserts – Kream Ball and Strawberry Cheesecake. I would have thought they would have chosen something more healthy.

KFC-Select-order

You order like an assembly line, similarly to Chipotle.

KFC-Select-double-chicken

Double Decker ($4.99) has two hand-breaded crispy chicken fillets with their special sauce and pickles between toasted sesame seed bun. Double crunchiness and M did enjoy it. Who can say no to fried chicken? I sure can’t.

KFC-Select-chicken

Fresh Deluxe ($4.99) has one hand-breaded crispy chicken fillet with cilantro mayo, salsa roja, mild cheddar and crisp lettuce, freshly stacked on a toasted sesame seed bun. It is the same price as the double decker sandwich, but this one just has a single fillet.

KFC-Select-meal

To make it a combo, just add $3. You get a drink and a side. The sides you can choose from are:

  • Waffle Fries
  • Coleslaw
  • Side salad

KFC-Select-waffle-fries

Waffles fries was the side we got and it was pretty darn good. So addictive too. I like it crunchy.

KFC-Select-bowl-meal

California Chicken Bowl ($5.99) you get grilled chicken over cilantro rice topped with Guacamole, cilantro mayo, sour cream, and pico de gallo.

KFC-Select-bowl

The bowl was ok, but it just contained so much sauce. It didn’t have a very healthy look to it.

KFC-Select-soda-fountain

They have a pretty awesome beverage fountain. I haven’t seen this in Vancouver yet, but it’s SO cool.

KFC-Select-fountain

The pop dispenses through a touch pad. You will find all different Pepsi products like 7 Up, Brisk , Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper and Dole.

KFC-Select-pepsi

When you select pepsi, you can have regular, cherry, lime, vanilla, lime or strawberry. M really loved this machine!

KFC-Select-coke

Overall, KFC Select is great because they know they need to evolve to suit their consumers tastes. Unfortunately, there were so many ways of making their food healthier, but I just didn’t see it. It seemed like a weird mishmash of KFC and Chipotle. I would have loved to see some grilled chicken in their burgers rather than the crispy fried ones.

Located in Toronto’s Korea Town (near Christie Station), Kinton Ramen is easy to spot. There are two floors at this location — ground floor is for dining and the above floor is an Izakaya (Japanese pub/bar).

kinton-ramen-outer

The place was quite full when Huhu and I arrive but we got seats at the high table in less than 2 minutes. (If you’re willing to wait, I would try to get a lower table at the back because I had a hard time settling into the high chair).

kinton-ramen-inner kinton-ramen-seats

I love eating out at Japanese places since I’ve found a liking towards draft Sapporo. Huhu and I cheered on a better week ahead (it was Sunday night). The pint of Sapporo ($5.80) tasted good as usual. I just wished there was a thin layer of foam at the top.

kinton-ramen-sapporo

The menu was designed so you work from top to bottom.

  1. pick broth base (pork or chicken)
  2. pick flavour
  3. pick noodle
  4. pick meat
  5. pick additional/optional toppings.

kinton-ramen-menu2

kinton-ramen-menu

I had pork base shoyu ramen with thin noodles and pork belly. I found the meat more fattening than I would have liked (I preferred the meat from Santoukou near Younge x Dundas Square). Because of the fat from the meat, my broth had lots of pork fat floating around. If you discount the floating fat, the broth itself had clean taste to it. To be honest, there wasn’t anything special. Just a normal bowl of ramen. The portion was big — I couldn’t finish it all.

kinton-ramen-shoyu

Huhu had pork base spicy garlic ramen with thin noodles and pork belly. As the name suggests, this bowl is very very garlic-y and spicy. If you’re on a date, try to get something else!

Miss Korea is a Korean bar/restaurant that sells lunch, dinner, and drinks. It is located near Yonge x Bloor Streets in Toronto, which is not too far from the 2 universities (U of T and Ryerson). The interior has a hybrid look of old and modern feel. It’s clean and good for a small group of friends to hang out (you can also host a bigger party upstairs). I’ve noticed university students and young professionals frequent this place often.

After window shopping and walking around the Yorkville area on a nice Sunday evening, Bunny-Bunny and I (Fabo) went to Miss Korea to grab a bite and a couple of drinks.

When we were there, it was only about 6-7pm so the place was quite empty. At one point we were the only customers there, which I liked. Miss Korea is usually more crowded around 9pm and onwards as it’s a good place to drink beer/soju/rice wine and eat snacks with your friends.

miss-korea-inner

miss-korea-wall

After looking through their menu, we decided to get something from their combo menu plus a main to satisfy our Korean food cravings. We ordered 4 bottles of beer and oden soup from their combo menu. Oden soup was tasty, but perhaps because of MSG. We depleted the soup before eating all the fish cakes.

miss-korea-s

Don’t have a picture, but we got 2 bottles of Coors Light and 2 bottles of Keith. There also were imported beers on the menu, but those weren’t part of the combo menu (I wanted Sapporo, but oh wells).

We also ordered bulgogi dolsot to share. It comes with a separate spicy sauce (gochoojang) to mix with.

miss-korea-d

It was my first time visiting Miss Korea during dinner time as I usually went for drinks. Going there during dinner time was actually not bad because you can enjoy a quiet conversation with your friends. If you are too lazy to travel all the way to Christie or North York for a Korean food, and if you want a casual place to meet up with friends, I would recommend you to give this place a try.

My most recent trip to Toronto to visit a few friends over the long weekend was a blast. I got to catch up with old friends and chill. Flo recommended we hit up Bar Isabel as it is one of the hottest restaurants in town. I am not familiar with any restaurants in Toronto, so she made reservations a few weeks in advanced and we got a spot. This experience in Toronto was created in partnership with momondo.

It is highly recommended you have reservations before you come dine here or else you might be out of luck. The open everyday from 6pm – 2am.

They serve up spanish tapas and are best known for their grilled octopus. They have been named Canada’s Best New Restaurant 2013 by Air Canada’s enRoute magazine. Also, they have been named one of Toronto’s top restaurants in 2014 by Huffington Post.

bar-isabel-inner

The interior is pretty cool. It’s a bit dark inside and really red. It was really hard to take photos in here. To have a good time, groups of 2 or 4 are best.

bar-isabel-mermaid

Hopeless Mermaid ($16) has Elyx vodka, St.Germain elderflower liquor, fresh lime and grapefruit juice, rich ginger syrup, Angostura bitters, and grapefruit zest.

bar-isabel-cocktail

We Choose Yer Own Adventure ($15 – $20) is great for indecisive people. The server will have a chat with you to see if you like refreshing/light or bold/sturdy drinks. Then, they will choose something for you.

bar-isabel-m

Roundhouse ($16) has Auchentoshan 12yr scotch, Jameson Irish whiskey, Los Arcos amontillado sherry, bad azz orgeat, fresh lime juice, Angostura bitters, and lemon oils.

All the drinks were pretty good! Pricey…but the quality was really good.

bar-isabel-meat

Cured Meat Plate ($16) has some pickled vegetables and you can choose 3 types of cured meats from the menu. We chose chorizo, beef carpaccio and coppa.

Bread ($4) was soft in the centre and has the crunchy crust.

bar-isabel-calimari

Spicy Fried Squid ($8) has crispy tongue and kale on top. The squid is very soft and tender. I found that the tongue and the kale didn’t add anything special to the squid to accentuate the flavours.

bar-isabel-sweetbreads

Smoked Sweetbreads ($18), has raw tuna, spicy pickled green tomato, and brown butter. If you don’t know what sweetbreads are, it’s not what you think. It’s really glands from an animal. This dish tasted pretty good and the sweetbreads had a chewy spongy texture to them.

bar-isabel-tuna

Albacore Tuna Tiradito ($14) has asian pear, celery, jalapeño and fried rosemary. It had a good assortment of ingredients that pairs nicely with the tuna.

bar-isabel-ceviche

Whole Sea Bream Ceviche ($26) was pretty awesome! It even comes with the deep-fried fish carcass and on top of that is the ceviche. Very delicious!

bar-isabel-octopus

1/2 Grilled Octopus ($34) was my favourite part of the meal. The half-size was plenty enough for the 4 of us. Wow, this octopus was tender. When you bite into the tentacles, the suction cups just fall apart in your mouth. Hands down best octopus I’ve ever eaten. It has great flavours! I still think about this dish a few times a week. MmmMmmmm so good!

bar-isabel-balls

Leche Frita & Salted Dulce de Leche ($6) this was my favourite dessert. It was really delicious and the sweetness and flavours were nicely put together. It was like a churro.

bar-isabel-chocolate

Salted Dark Chocolate Ensaimada ($7) was ok, not as good as their other 2 desserts. The star here is the salted chocolate ice cream. The ensaimada didn’t add much to the dish.

bar-isabel-dessert

Basque Cake ($8.50) has Sherry Cream all over it. The cake was moist and the sherry cream was perfect with it. So simple but so good. My other friends thought this was the best dessert.

Overall, the four of us had a good time at Bar Isabel. The food was good and I would definitely come back.

In the Annex of Toronto, I saw Insomnia Cafe and it seemed like a super cool place to have food. It’s quite popular for brunch, but I didn’t have time to have brunch here, so I opted for dinner.

CanuckGirl, BaguetteGirl and I headed over for dinner.

There is a good amount of seating and some lounge seating in the back of the restaurant.

The front of the restaurant looks great and is most beautiful during the summer as they open the doors and windows.

Proscuitto Wrapped Asparagus ($10) is garnished with asiago cheese and a honey pear vinaigrette and tomatoes. It tasted good, but not justified for $10! I would not order this again. Very disappointed.

Avocado Grilled Chicken ($10) has melted brie and red onions on top of the bread. You also get a side of fries and salad. CanuckGirl enjoyed it!

8oz. Black Angus Beef Burger ($9) has lettuce, red onion, tomato and garlic aioli. You can also add additional ingredients on top too. BaguetteGirl added mozzarella and sauteed onions on top. It also comes with the fries and salad.

Quesadilla ($9) contains house made refried beans, avocado spread and monterey jack cheese. You also get some mayo and sour cream to dip the quesadillas into. Just like the other dishes, you get the fries and salad too. I thought it was ok, but wasn’t anything amazing.

Overall, Insomnia Cafe was ok for sandwiches, but their dinner and appetizer menu is a bit overpriced for what you get. It’s a good place for drinks and late night chillaxing.

Words of Wisdom:

Lola’s Kitchen is located in Yorkville in Toronto. They serve up some delicious brunch and is an excellent place to dine on the weekend. They have lots of seats inside and outside.

BaguetteGirl and FaceMan took CanuckGirl and I here for some yummy brunch.

The restaurant is in a house, but does have several floors and is cozy.

Green Tea uses the usual Tetley tea bags and there wasn’t anything special about it. The cup was quite small too and they couldn’t give us a pot of hot water to fill up ourselves.

Orange Juice

Pomegranate-green tea iced tea

Eggs Rancheros ($12) has chipotle spiced organic black beans scrambled with eggs or organic tofu in a crisp whole wheat tortilla bowl topped with cheddar cheese, guacamole, tomatillo pico de gallo & lime yogurt. You can choose between salad, fries or potatoes.

Warm Chick Pea Wrap (#12) has grilled organic tofu, warm citrus & herb marinated chick pea mash, Lola’s tomatoes, baby spinach & organic sprouts in a grilled whole wheat tortilla. You can choose between salad, fries or potatoes.

‘Shroom Benny ($11) has toasted organic whole wheat biscuits topped with caramelized onions, baby spinach, roasted mushrooms, poached eggs & our hollandaise sauce. You can choose between salad, fries or potatoes. CanuckGirl really enjoyed the benny and the potatoes.

Brunch Burger ($15) has an all beef burger with grilled peameal bacon, caramelized onions, Lola’s cheese blend, sweet pickles, sunny egg, house made ketchup aioli on a multigrain bun. I chose to have the salad to balance out the fatness of the burger.

It was a pretty meaty burger, but the sunny side egg made it a bit difficult to eat with hands. I resorted to the knife and fork technique. The flavours were good, but I think my beef patty was a bit scorched, so it had a smokey/burnt taste to it.

Lola’s Stuffed French Toast ($12) has a lemon vanilla cheesecake sandwiched in Challah French toast with seasonal fruit compote. It was so delicious! It even made some other people come up to our table to see it. It wasn’t too sweet either! It’s a must order!

Overall, pretty good brunch options here.

  • Service can be a bit spotty if you are on alternate floors
  • Must order the french toast and bennys!

Menchies Frozen Yogurt is another Froyo store on Bloor Street. There are 3 different froyo stores within a block or so away from each other…. but I ended up going to all 3 for some reason. It was close to BaguetteGirl’s place and we always felt like eating froyo.

It’s also a chain store and they recently opened one in Vancouver too. I was actually excited to go to this location since I haven’t been to the one in Vancouver yet.

The interior is very open and has a few seats and lots of space to walk around to create your froyo. The instructions are very basic – mix, weigh, and pay.

Everything basically has their mascots face on it, even their lamps.

Apple Tart froyo and original tart froyo with fruit toppings ($0.55 per oz). I enjoyed it!

More froyo.

I love their cute mascot! It makes eating froyo very enjoyable at Menchies because of the cute characters and bold colors.

Overall, they do have a large list of flavours and similar concept to the other froyo places on the block. Their consistency between each flavour is slightly different, so that could be improved. Nonetheless, it’s still a healthy dessert option! No matter which froyo place you go to on Bloor St. … it’s all about the same.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Similar prices to the other froyo places on the same street
  • Fun and unique spoons
  • Can try all the flavours before deciding which to get

After roaming around Niagara Falls after the Maid of the Mist boat ride, CanuckGirl and I were quite hungry, so we walked around for a few blocks to find food. We found most of the places were very overpriced and were chain restaurants. Our tour guide even suggested a few places but…any place rated 17% was not a place for us.

Eventually we gave up and settled with Boston Pizza.

The interior is very open and seats lots of people. You can have the choice of sitting indoors of having patio seating.

We opted for patio seating, but it was still indoors and just has the windows up. You get a good view of the street.

Oven Roasted Salt & Pepper Wings ($9.29) were alright and we did enjoy getting the options of not having them deep-fried. CanuckGirl said the wings were tender but it wasn’t anything special.

Pepperoni and Feta Thin Crust Pizza ($13.29) has layers of pepperoni, sun-dried tomatoes, feta, cheddar, pizza mozzarella and green onion. The pizza was very oily and the green onions were chopped up very largely.

Overall, food was pretty meh. It’s something edible and we got full.

Hershey has a store in Niagara Falls. I was surprised, but I just had to go inside. I’m such a candy lover. Clearly I was really excited because I loved Hershey’s as a kid. Plus most people like chocolate.

They have tons of items branded with their signature candies such as Reeses. It’s a tourist attraction, but hey…there’s really nothing else to see around Niagara Falls besides the Maid of the Mist.

Instead of merchandise, they sell unique snacks too, such as this Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Cookie. They also have good milkshakes too.

I on the other hand decided to get this Cookie Monster Cupcake for about $3. It’s so cute! I just had to get it. It was not too sweet, but the cupcake portion of it was just a vanilla cake.

Overall, super cute store to browse around and has some yummy desserts and snacks to purchase.

Buca is an Italian restaurant in King West area of Toronto. It was recently named one of Canada’s Top 50 restaurants. The food is simple, but is known for the amazing flavour and quality.

We were originally going to Lee, but they are closed on Sundays. BaguetteGirl decided to take us to Buca instead and it was not disappointing at all.

The interior is quite rustic and has some cool interior decor. They even have cured meat hanging in certain places of the restaurant.

It’s usually busy and its hard to get a reservation for weeks apparently. Fortunately, without reservations, we were able to get a table for 3.

Their menu changes daily depending of their ingredients that they have on hand.

Orecchio Di Maiale ($8) is crispy pig ears with wild fennel salt. It was very crispy and most delicious! It also wasn’t too oily too. I would highly recommend this item!

Pomodoro E Tartufo ($29) has preserved tomatoes, basil and truffled burrata cheese finished with scorzone truffles. It’s a simple pizza, but it is incredibly thin and super crispy. They even give you scissors to cut it up into pieces. You must get pizza here!

Spaghetti Al Nero Di Maiale ($22) has hand cut blood pasta with n’duja, soffruitto and wild leeks finished with burrata cheese. The pasta was surprisingly spicy, but if you can stand the extra kick of spice, you’ll like it. The burrata cheese gives the pasta a nice creamy texture.

Orecchiette ($27) has hand-made pasta with basil fed snails, soffrietto, brussel sprouts and fresh fava beans finishes with butter and crisp pancetta. The pasta was soft and the snails contrasted nicely with the salty pancetta.

Overall, it was a great dining experience at Buca. I can see why they are one of the Top 50 restaurants in Canada. Their pizza is to die for and I’ve never had anything close to it in Vancouver. The service was sparse and it would be hard to get the attention of the waiter.

Yogurty’s Froyo is another self-serve yogurt shop on Bloor Street in the Annex. There are tons of yogurt shops near by, such as YoYo’s Yogurt Cafe and Menchies within a few blocks of each other. I thought it was strange, but all of them were packed at night.

FaceMan, Batman, BaguetteGirl, CanuckGirl and I came here after dinner to finish off the day.

There are lots of space inside, but it’s super busy at 11pm.

Since it is self-serve, you just pay for the weight of what you put in your cup. The cup is only one size, but it’s a big cup.

Yogurty’s has about 16 flavours! It’s quite a large selection! You can taste test all the flavours before choosing what you want.

After you fill up the cup, you can add candy toppings or fresh fruit.

Wafer and Peanut Butter swirl Froyo ($0.55 per oz.) I added some brownies, cheesecake bits and cookie dough on top. Yummy.

There’s a good amount of fresh fruit to add on top too!

Overall, Yogurty’s does have a lot of flavours and good consistency between their yogurt. They also have lots of toppings to choose from too.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Try out a majority of the flavours before filling up your cup
  • Go place to chill and hangout
  • Wifi

Guu Izakaya is the first Guu location in Toronto. It is much smaller than its other location – Guu SakaBar, but it is very very popular. BaguetteGirl, CanuckGirl and I waited 1.5 hours for a table of 3. That’s quite nuts, but I have a goal of going to all the Guu’s in the world. It’s my favorite restaurant, so it just seemed like I needed to go. No line up will stop me. I’m just glad Vancouver has 6 Guus so I don’t have to wait so long.

The interior has bar seating, a few long tables and some patio seating. It’s quite hard to get a large table unless you come here early.

We sat at the bar watching the chefs cook up some delicious food and we saw this super cute cat!

Big Mug Sapporo ($9.50) is similar size to a ‘Mega’ Sapporo in Vancouver. It’s quite large…a liter of beer! I couldn’t finish it….but if I did…I probably wouldn’t be able to get home.

Gomae ($3.80) is blanched spinach with black sesame sauce. I liked the spinach, but I think there was too much sesame sauce.

Gindara ($9.80) is grilled black cod with Saikyo miso and white wine sauce. It was a bit small for the price, but it was very tender and flaky.

Karaage ($6.80) has deep-fried soy sauce marinated chicken served with a mayo sauce. I had the karaage at Guu SakaBar and they karaage does differ slightly. It seems like this one has a bit more battering to it. Nonetheless, it still delicious and tender on the inside.

Okonomiyaki ($6.80) is a deep-fried Japanese pancake with squid, tonkastsu sauce and karashi mayo. It comes in 4 pieces and quite delicious! It is topped with bonito flakes and seaweed! The bonito flakes move around as heat is emitted from the dish. It looks alive, but it isn’t.

Gyu Carpaccio ($6.50) has seared beef sashimi with ponzu sauce. It is topped with scallions, radish, garlic chips and mayo. It’s one of my favorite dishes! You take the slices of beef and put a little of everything on it.

Kimchi Udon ($7.80) has udon noodles with spicy cod roe and kimchi. It is topped with dried seaweed and scallions. You mix this together with your chopsticks to get everything incorporated. It’s not spicy at all! Very delicious and savory. Usually when you cook kimchi, it softens up and the spiciness disappears. Very yummy!

Overall, the items between all Guus in the words are quite similar. They have very similar items, so no matter where you are in the world, you can have their delicious karaage, sashimi, and udons.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Super long waits
  • If you hate waiting, go to Guu Sakabar for a shorter wait
  • Under $10 per dish, but can add up if you drink

The newest Loblaws in Toronto is located in the old Maple Leaf Gardens near Ryerson University. It is very very large, but has everything you ever wanted from a grocery store. It has a very large selection of ready to eat food and deli section. I was so amazed by the sheer size and modern interior.

As we were waiting in line for Guu Izakaya a few blocks down, we decided to just roam around Loblaws and check it out.

They have a gelato section with 16 different flavours. BaguetteGirl and I were enticed by their flavours and decided to spoil our stomach before dinner.

Lemon Gelato ($2.99) was very tart tasting. The consistency was like a harder sorbet. It’s not the best gelato in town, but it was good considering it came from a grocery store.

Hazelnut Gelato ($2.99) was very fragrant and tasted really good.

Overall, it’s a strange place to go eat gelato, but we were not the only ones. A bunch of others were getting it to-go or sitting in their cafe area. What I like about the design of the store is that they still have left remnants of the old stadium and incorporated them into the design.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Large Selection of groceries with very modern look
  • Find ‘Center Ice’ in the Canned Meat section
  • Decent and Quick deli section and food
