Colour See See is a new Shanghainese Dumpling shop located in Burnaby right across from Metropolis at Metrotown. I heard from a few people that I have to check this place out, so a few of us decided to come here on the weekend for lunch. Do be warned that service is also very slow. There is paid parking on the street and it is cash only under $30.

The name Colour See See sounds like a name suited for a hair salon, but it is in fact a play on a Chinese saying meaning “I’ll show you, just watch”.

Interior

The space is pretty small with just a few tables and the rest of the space is for their kitchen, storage, and washrooms. It can get pretty busy on a weekend.

Menu

Cold Soy Milk

This was a pretty standard soy milk. Nothing special about this.

Mini Wonton Soup

There are 10 mini wontons with pork filling in this soup. It also has green onions, parsley, egg, shrimp and seaweed. The mini wontons were really tiny, but there is another option on the menu for their regular wonton soup.

Pan Fried Buns

There are 4 buns to an order. Crisp on the bottom, a good thickness of the bun and the filling inside. We got the crab and pork filling and it was good to see the pieces of shrimp inside too.

Pan Fried Dumplings

There are 4 pieces to an order and we got it with crab meat and pork filling. The filling was nice and tasty. It was a small dish for $7.95 at almost $2 per dumpling which is a bit much, but then again its the crab that makes it cost so much.

Steamed Soup Buns

These come 6 to an order. The dumplings has a thin delicate skin with hot soup as well as the pork filling inside. Of all the dumplings, this was the favourite, but it’s hard to not like xiao long bao.

Final Thoughts

The experience overall was very subpar because it did take 1.5 hours for all the dumplings to come out for such small dishes. I understand it is all made to order by hand but other places are the same too, but it’s strange that the execution is so slow. Other restaurants in the area are much better. I wanted to like this place, but I won’t be back anytime soon.

suhang-1

Suhang Restaurant is a Shanghainese restaurant located in Richmond on Ackroyd Road.

We were invited by Tourism Richmond to experience the Dumpling Trail. Suhang is one of the restaurants featured in the trail for their diverse selection of dumplings from crispy to chewy to all types of textures.

Interior

suhang-2

We came here on a weekend around noon and it wasn’t busy at all. We did have reservations just in case it was busy.

Dumplings

suhang-8

Xiao Long Bao had a nice thin skin, so we were afraid to accidentally break them. All that precious soup inside shouldn’t be wasted. The meat filling inside was delicious.

suhang-9

Potstickers had a bit of the thick skin to them compared to some other restaurants. Nonetheless, the meat filling makes up for it.

suhang-6

Pan Fried Dumplings  had a nice golden brown colour on the bottom. The bun was fluffy and the filling was delicious just like the others.

Other Dishes

suhang-5

Dan Dan Noodles were pretty bad and the worst dish of the meal. It was like eating peanut butter with noodles.

suhang-4

Hot and Sour Soup was delicious. Always a delight having hot and sour soup.

suhang-3

Stir-fried Rice Cakes has a chewy texture to them, but it was good to have rice cakes instead of noodles.

Final Thoughts

suhang-7

Overall, the dumplings were delicious here but a few dishes were a miss especially the dan dan noodles.

chens-shanghai-1

Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant has been around for quite some time now. My last visit was back in 2013 with a few foodie friends to chow down on their XLBs. This time, I’ve returned with the ChineseBites crew to try out a lot more items off their menu.

chens-shanghai-2

The restaurant decor isn’t fancy, but people just come here for the Shanghainese food. There are lots of large round tables for large groups.

chens-shanghai-3

We started off with the Deluxe Appetizer Platter, which was Jelly Pork, Smoked Pomfret in Sweet Brown Sauce, Mixed Malantou with Sliced Dried Bean Curd, Jellyfish with Green Onion Oil, and the Shanghai Style Marinated Bran Dough.

All typical items that appear in these grand platters. The Mixed Malantou with Sliced Dried Bean Curd needed a bit more salt or sesame oil to bring out more flavour.

chens-shanghai-4

Their famous Xiao Long Bao (XLB) are steam pork buns. They were large, had a nice thin skin, but could have used a bit more soup inside.

chens-shanghai-5

Shanghai Style Spring RollsRadish Pastry and Baked Pastry with Beef all came on one platter. All of the items were nice and crisp. Of the 3, my favourite was the radish pastry.

chens-shanghai-6

Sticky Rice Roll with Pork Floss and Pan Fried Pork Dumplings also came together on one plate, but I’m sure normally it’s not.

The pan-fried pork dumpling has a thick skin, so it takes away from the enjoyment of the dumpling.

chens-shanghai-7

The Sticky Rice Roll with Pork Floss was very one dimensional. it would be better if there was something else to go with this.

chens-shanghai-8

House Special Wonton and Chicken Hotpot was really good and you can see the whole chicken right in the pot. I thought it was well balanced and delicious.

chens-shanghai-9

Crab with Edamame and Rice Cake in House Special Sauce had a delicious sauce covering all those rice cakes. The rice cakes were gobbled up very quickly, but getting at those crab legs were difficult since the sauce makes holding on to the legs slippery.

chens-shanghai-10

House Special Spicy Lobster was easier to get at the meat inside. I liked the amount of spice and it worked very well.

chens-shanghai-11

Pork Spareribs with Brown Vinegar Sauce was very tough. I had a hard time biting off the meat around the bones. The sauce was also very sticky and sweet.

chens-shanghai-12

Tea Smoked Chicken was good. Lots of smoky flavour seeped into the skin and meat. I liked it.

chens-shanghai-13

Deep Fried Breaded Fish with Grounded Seaweed was ok, I have found that other restaurant prepare this dish a bit better. It seemed limp and soggy. The batter could have used a bit more salt too.

chens-shanghai-14

Tiger Prawns and Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce Hot Pot was a good dish, but I think we needed some rice on the side to go with it as it had a good amount of sauce. If you do order this dish, grab some rice.

chens-shanghai-15

House Special Spicy Beef had a good amount of kick to this dish. The beef was tender, but a bit oily.

chens-shanghai-16

Beijing Style Pork Slices with Wraps was a fun dish to have. You put a little bit of everything in the wrap and eat it. The pork had a nice flavour and balanced with the cucumber slice.

chens-shanghai-17

House Special Crispy Noodle was very crispy. They really weren’t kidding. There wasn’t enough sauce to soften up the noodles. It was like eating a stir fry with a brick of ramen underneath.

chens-shanghai-18

Egg White Puff Stuffed with Red Bean Paste was ok, but I didn’t really take a liking to it. I just don’t really like sweet and savoury things mixing together like this.

Overall, some dishes were hits and some were misses. You definitely need to know what their specialties are before coming to dine here. The XLBs, Beijing Style Pork Slices with Wraps, Salty Soy Milk, and Deep Fried Man Tou.

dinesty-burnaby-19

Dinesty has a brand new location in South Burnaby under the Elements building. It is a few minutes away from Metropolis at Metrotown. They are best known for the Xiao Long Bao aka steamed pork dumplings.

Since foodies like to get together and eat, a few of us decided to meet up for the first time at Dinesty. Always good to put a face to someone’s online foodie persona.

dinesty-burnaby-1

Similar to the other locations, you will see a bunch of teapots in display cases when you walk in. It’s awesome to look at because each tea pot is different.

Even if you are waiting in line, staring at those tea pots can help speed up the wait perception.

dinesty-burnaby-2 dinesty-burnaby-3

The space has a lot of large round tables, so its great for families or large groups. Just make sure you put down a reservation ahead of time to avoid any waits.

I always like how they have the kitchen showing into the dining area, so you can see how all your food is put together.

dinesty-burnaby-4

Chinese Spinach and Bean Curd was good. Always my favourite item to order at Dinesty. It also has sesame oil, so that taste comes through.

dinesty-burnaby-5

Marinated Mushroom and Bamboo looks pretty creepy. Taste was ok, but nothing very notable.

dinesty-burnaby-6

Spicy Pig Ears was a pretty mediocre dish. More oily and not spicy at all. I found the similar experience at other Dinesty locations too.

dinesty-burnaby-7

Fried rice with shrimp, vegetables and ham was ok. A tad bland but would fair well with some chili sauce.

dinesty-burnaby-8

Nom. Nom. Nom.

dinesty-burnaby-9

Shanghai Fried Noodles was delicious. Not to oily and had a good mix of veggies and meat.

dinesty-burnaby-10

Wontons with Sour Chili Sauce could have been better. It was more oily and didn’t have much hot chili flavour to it.

dinesty-burnaby-11

Stir Fried Rice Cake with Pork Chop Shanghai Style was pretty good. The chunks of pork chop were flavourful and tender. I would order this again.

dinesty-burnaby-12

Stir fried basa fillet with wine sauce was good as well. Flavourful wine sauce with the tender flakey basa.

dinesty-burnaby-14

We made sure we loaded up with the Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings by getting 3 orders.

dinesty-burnaby-15

When they came out, it wasn’t super hot. It shriveled up a bit, so it wasn’t as soupy. Very minimal soup. The day before, I was actually at the Robson location and it was different.

Although, this visit was decent, it wasn’t as good as it could have been.

dinesty-burnaby-16

Camphor & Tea Smoked Duck came with 8 buns to eat with the duck. We were surprised by the flavour of this. Very good smoky flavour and the meat was so good.

dinesty-burnaby-18

We wished there were so duck breast meat on the plate, but it was mostly bone. I think I snagged one of the only plump and juicy breast pieces.

dinesty-burnaby-17

The rest were bony, so you couldn’t devour it without needing to pick out some bones.

dinesty-burnaby-13

Of all the locations, I would say my go to location would be the Dinesty on No 3 Road as it was the first on in Vancouver.

This South Burnaby location still has a few kinks it needs to work out. Some items are a hit and miss, but if you can’t get the steamed pork dumplings right, you gotta try again.

dinesty-robson-2

Dinesty Restaurant is one of my go to places for Xiao Long Bao. My friends and I were looking for a place to have dinner and we realized we haven’t been here for some time. Something about hot soupy pork dumplings made us start to drool. It’s my secret comfort food.

Since it was a busy Friday, we waited in line for about 20 minutes for a table of 5. People do finish up quickly, so you won’t ever have to wait an unbearable amount of time. You can also call ahead to make a reservation if you hate waiting.

dinesty-robson-1

They now have 5 locations across the Lower Mainland serving up delicious Shanghainese cuisine. The Xiao Long Bao/ Steamed Pork Dumplings are #1 on everyone’s list. It’s basically on every table in the restaurant.

dinesty-robson-6

Xiao Long Bao/ Steamed Pork Dumplings came piping hot right out of the steamer. Don’t wait too long since you don’t want it to cool down too much.

dinesty-robson-5

The skin of the dumplings are thin and full of soup. You want to pick it up near the tip to avoid piercing the skin. The soup has gotta stay inside so you can enjoy it all. We loved it as usual.

dinesty-robson-3

Chinese Spinach and Bean Curd is an item that I really enjoy. Always very surprising since it’s just so simple. It has a nice sesame oil taste to it. If you haven’t had it before, give it a try.

dinesty-robson-9

Spicy Pig Ears looks pretty gross to some people, but it has a nice texture. We found that is wasn’t spicy at all. More oily than spicy. It definitely could have been better.

dinesty-robson-4

Marinated beef with soy sauce wrapped in pancake was ok. It looks nice, but we felt that it was missing hoisin sauce.

dinesty-robson-7

Fried Rice with Shrimp was pretty bland. It needed a bit more salt to it. We mixed some of the spinach and bean curd dish with this and it made it so much better.

dinesty-robson-8

Pan Fried Pork Pot Stickers comes with 6 pieces are were also ok. It doesn’t compare with the XLB dumplings.

dinesty-robson-10

Fried Bun with Condensed Milk is always a favourite to end the meal. Condensed milk is so addictive.

Some items are a hit and miss, but if you order the Xiao Long Bao, you’ll be very happy.

top-shanghai-outer

Top Shanghai Cuisine Restaurant is in Richmond and we came here for a morning Shanghainese meal. We came right when it opened. Within 30 minutes this restaurant was packed and there was a line forming.

In 2013, they won best Dim Sum restaurant from the Chinese Restaurant Awards.

top-shanghai-inner

All around the dining room are lots of pictures of their dishes. It makes you even more hungry when waiting for dishes to arrive.

top-shanghai-soy

Salty Soy Milk is one of my favourite dishes to order at a Shanghai Restaurant. It’s a savoury soup with tofu puffs, green onions, tiny shrimp, and a tad of chili oil.

top-shanghai-donut

Chinese Donut is a long golden brown donut.Except it’s not sweet at all. It is salted and eaten during breakfast with congee or soymilk.

top-shanghai-spicy-wonton

Wontons with Chili Sauce is another one of my favourites. It has a bunch of boiled wonton and then slathered with chili oil mixture on top.

top-shanghai-xlb

Xiao Long Bao or steamed pork dumpling comes with 6 pieces per order. The skin is thin and there’s lots of hot soup inside with the tender pork. Eating these are fun because you must not pop the skin or else the soup will ooze out. The way I eat these are just putting it on my spoon, bite a tiny hole into the XLB and sip the soup inside. Then I can devour the rest.

I’m pretty sure everyone orders this! It’s what they are known for.

top-shanghai-bun

Pan-fried Pork Buns has 6 per order, the one that arrived for us combined both orders. The bun is much thicker that the Xiao Long Bao, but has similar soup and pork inside. Another top selling item from this restaurant.

top-shanghai-seaweed

Fried Fish in Seaweed Batter was surprisingly very delicious and addictive! It’s very aromatic and pairs so well. The look may not be very appealing, but you gotta order this if you have a large group.

top-shanghai-spring-roll

Spring Rolls is a weird thing to see on the menu as it is a Shanghainese restaurant. The spring rolls were pretty average but nothing about it stood out.

top-shanghai-noodle

Shanghai Pan Fried Noodles had a good amount of vegetables and the sauce tasted great.

top-shanghai-rice-roll

Sticky Rice Rolls were wrapped up in plastic wrap and then portioned out. I  have never seen it in a restaurant like this. You can eat everything but the plastic wrap. I think they kept it on as it makes it easier to eat without the rice sticking to your hands.

top-shanghai-roll

Inside the rice rolls is pickled veggies, Chinese donut and pork floss. Pretty standard fillings. I found this to be rather bland and boring.

top-shanghai-sesame

Deep Fried Pastries with Daikon was something I haven’t seen before. A deep-fried bun with lots of shredded daikon inside.

top-shanghai-noodles

Beef Brisket Noodle Soup is a bit hard to share with a big group unless you have awesome chopstick skills. It was really good and the beef brisket had a good depth of flavour.

top-shanghai-table

Overall, the food here is good, but still not the best. My favourite Shanghainese place is still Long’s Noodle House on Main Street.

elan-outer

Shanghai Elan Restaurant is located in Crystal Mall. It takes the place of Pittsburg Cafe, which I’m glad closed down since they did had such horrible food. Crystal Mall probably has the most poorly designed parkade as I like to avoid all life-forms there. People drive crazy and there is a good chance someone is gonna mess up your car.

Besides the craziness of the parking, I love Shanghai food and it has  never disappointed me. It’s a bit hard to find Shanghainese food in Burnaby, so I’m glad there’s something close by. I came here with my parents for an early lunch on the weekend. It was kinda like Dim Sum but without the traditional type of dishes.

elan-hot-sour

Hot and Sour Soup ($10.50) was what we started the meal with.  It was easily sharable with a table of 4. It was thick and contained a lot of ingredients inside.

elan-soup

I’ve always loved this soup since it was a bit spicy, a bit sour and loaded with different textures like bamboo shoots, fungus, and other things.

elan-rice-cake

Shanghai Fried Rice Cake with shredded pork and vegetables ($10.50) it has a lot of rice cake. Good taste and it has a chewy texture to them.

elan-roll

Marinated Beef Wrapped in pancake ($6.50) was ok, but I hated how the pancake was so thick and doughy.

elan-wonton

Steamed Chicken and Pork Wonton Soup ($14.50) has a delicious broth but the wontons were tiny and had very little meat in each wonton. I think I’m just used to having those big wontons in soup.

elan-xlb

XLB Steamed Pork Buns ($5.50) is a popular dish and almost everyone orders it. Inside there is a light broth with pork encased in the bun. It’s good but it’s still not as addictive as Dinesty.

elan-veg-dumpling

Pan Fried Chives Dumpling ($5.50) came with 2 deep fried  dumplings and sauce.

elan-dumpling

When we opened it up, I thought there would be more Chives inside. It was a mixture of chives, glass noodles and egg.

Overall, the food was ok, but I expected a little bit more from the dishes I ordered. I prefer their dinner items at Shanghai Elan Restaurant.

Longs Noodle House

Long’s Noodle House is located on Main street right beside Au Petit Cafe. Both of these places are very busy and there are line ups during peak hours. I came here for a family lunch as we heard it has some pretty darn good xiao long bao. We made a reservation since it was for a large party. As the traffic was very busy, we called ahead to let them know we would be 15 minutes late. They were very accommodating and the table was still there as we arrived.

There is paid parking in the front and free parking in the street behind the restaurant.

Longs Noodle House

The interior is basic and there aren’t too many seats. Always make a reservation.

Longs Noodle House

Wine Chicken comes in a little cute jar. Inside is a bunch of chicken pieces marinated in wine and is slightly warm. Its one of the popular items on the menu. The pieces were tender and deliciously soaks up the wine flavour. Kids usually don’t like this dish, but its more for older people. My little sister refused to eat it since there’s alcohol.

Longs Noodle House

Yellow Fish with Seaweed is pretty awesome. It has the yellow fish covered in a seaweed batter. The seaweed has a prominent taste and I was surprised it went so well together. Mmmmmm highly recommended.

Longs Noodle House

Crispy rice with salty egg sauce was another strange dish, but it was surprisingly good too. The fried crispy rice is on top and the salty egg sauce is on the bottom. It’s salty, its fatty, its crunchy, and it’s quite addictive.

Longs Noodle House

Xiao Long Bao comes with 6 pieces. It is packed full of soup and really delicious. One of the good XLB in town.

Longs Noodle House

Eel noodle in soup was an interesting dish. I never would have thought of ordering this. It was good and definitely a good items share among the table.

Longs Noodle House

Beef Roll has the five spiced meat, cilantro and cucumber inside. I found it different from other places as the wrap is much softer.

Longs Noodle House

Hot and Sour soup came last and tasted good. This probably should have been ordered early in the meal, but we didn’t mind that we had this last.

Overall, Long’s Noodle House is a great place for some good Shanghainese food. The prices are fair and the food is just great.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

I don’t go to Richmond that often, so we decided to make Kirsty (Eating with Kirby) take us to the good places in town. She was pretty confident that this place had some good xiao long bao. I am still a big fan of Dinesty, so she really wanted to show me this hole in the wall with amazing XLB. She even wrote a blog post about Dinesty vs Chen’s a few months ago.

This place is cash only and has won several awards too. It doesn’t have a nice interior but they are best known for their food.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Salted Soy Milk ($2.95) sounds like a weird dish, but it was surprisingly good. It’s also only $2.50! SO cheap! Somehow all the ingredients blended together very nicely to make a savory soup.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Mixed Meat Wo Ba was a cool dish to eat. You take some soup and then you throw in a chunk of crispy rice into it. Its a good combination of crispy rice and the smooth saltiness of the soup.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Noodle Soup with pickled cabbage and shredded pork ($6.50) was ok. Nothing special.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Xiao Long Bao comes in 6 pieces per order ($4.95) whats unique about these is that there is a lot of soup packed into these. Half of the table broke their XLB as they were transporting the dumpling from the bamboo steamer to their spoons.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Shanghai Spicy Green Beans ($7.95) was good as usual. A little bit oily, but not as bad as other restaurants.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Buns ($4.95) were oily and a bit burn on the pan-fried side.

Chen's Shanghai Kitchen

Deep fried buns with condensed milk is a must! The deep fried buns come in 6 pieces and great for sharing. Crispy on the outside and steaming hot and fluffy on the inside.

The food was good and the prices were great. Some dishes can be a hit and a miss.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Must order the Xiao Long Bao, Salted Soy Milk, Deep Fried Man Tou
  • Cash Only
  • Free parking in the parking lot
  • Horrible Service

Dinesty on Robson

Dinesty is finally open on Robson Street in Downtown Vancouver. Dinesty took over the previous location of Jang Mo Jib and completely renovated the location.

Their menu is similar but there are a few new additions. The menu now has all pictures too!

Dinesty on Robson

The interior is pretty nice and has lots of space. It’s been quite popular even though it’s only been open for a very very short amount of time. It’s best to make reservations.

Dinesty on Robson

Their kitchen is quite large as well. You can watch them all at work. They definitely have less staff than the Richmond location, so when its a full house, service is slower.

Dinesty on Robson

Steamed Kimchi and Pork Dumpling ($5.95) made me very intrigued so we ordered them. The waitress warmed us that this would be quite spicy. It wasn’t spicy at all! Not quite sure what she was warning us about. This dumpling didn’t taste very good at all. Best to stick with the original XLB.

Dinesty on Robson

Pork and Prawn Potstickers ($4.75) comes with 6 pieces and has a piece of shrimp and minced pork inside each roll. I saw this on a few other tables as well. Seemed like a popular item.

Dinesty on Robson

Pan Fried Chive Dumpling tasted ok, but I prefer the pan fried beef dumpling.

Dinesty on Robson

Chinese Green Onion Pancake ($2.50) was crispy on the outside. You probably want some vinegar as a dip to accompany this.

Dinesty on Robson

Deep Fried Chicken roll comes in 2 rolls and has about 10 pieces. Pretty delicious and it comes with a dish of mayo to go along with it.

Dinesty on Robson

Beef Noodles soup with Pickled Vegetables pretty solid bowl of noodles and it’s a quick and cheap item to order if it’s for one person.

Overall, pretty good items overall. With this location downtown, it is bound to be very popular! Lost of people were doing take out orders too. I’d definitely come again! The service varies depending on how many other customers are there. When this place got packed, it was so difficult to order a can of coke. We had to ask 5 different waitresses before we got it.

Overall, the food was pretty good and there are tons of items on their menu to choose from. Even us food bloggers had a hard time deciding.
