Moltaqa Moroccan restaurant is located near Gastown and there aren’t that many Moroccan restaurants in Vancouver. When I saw it, I knew I had to come with my friend for lunch. I love trying out different cuisines and explore cuisines out of the ordinary.

Interior

The interior is nice and I love the window seating as there is so much natural light. The small touches to the interior decor is very nice too.

Lunch Menu

Vegetable Pastilla

This was a dish I had the most issues as this was $15.75 as it has shredded vegetables inside in a Phyllo pastry and topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. This was one of the most expensive dishes and it wasn’t that large either. It’s about the same price as the other dishes. Not recommended.

Chicken Merguez Couscous

This has 2 halal sausage, chicken, and served on a bed of couscous and roasted vegetables. This was one of my favourite dishes as the sauce just brings everything together and the price was very fair for what you get. You will be full from this. Recommended!

Halal Lamb Shank Apricot Tagine

This has seasonal vegetables with the fall off the bone lamb shank. One of their popular items. It also comes with a side of couscous to eat with that delicious sauce. A good hearty meal!

Cumin Lamb and Roasted Vegetables Sandwiches

The sandwich was very good with feta cheese inside, the cumin lamb, and lots of roasted vegetables in the nice bun. Good flavours but we did notice the lamb was a bit on the dry side.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s great to try Moroccan cuisine in Vancouver. There really aren’t that many around, so it was good to try something new. The flavours here were solid but there were a few hits and misses.

Argan-Bistro-outer

Argan Bistro, formerly known as Moroccan West serves up delicious Moroccan food on Jervis and Robson Street. Executive Chef Nourdine Majdoubi brings rich flavours of Moroccan cuisine to life from his experiences around the world and from his childhood growing up in Agadir, a southern Morocco’s coastal tourist town.

Argan-Bistro-inner2

There’s lots of tables inside and can seat groups of 2 – 4 comfortably. I’m sure they can go larger groups too.

Argan-Bistro-menu

They serve lunch, brunch and dinner.

Argan-Bistro-ruby

Every good dinner starts with alcohol right? I tried Parallel 49 Gypsy Tears Ruby Ale.

Argan-Bistro-samosa

Merguez Sausage Samosa ($9) is served with smoked tomato chutney. This was one of my favourite items. It reminded me of a cross between a spring roll and a samosa. It’s flavourful and I wanted to keep on eating these forever.

Argan-Bistro-fries

Truffle Parmesan Fries ($8) is seasoned with truffle oil and parmesan cheese. It is also served in a ceramic fry dish. It’s pretty cute. There’s a lot of parmesan cheese but it’s not a bad things because you get a lot of flavour.
This is one of their more popular appetizers and I can see why. It’s not Moroccan at all, but it makes for great finger food.

Argan-Bistro-eggplant

Zaalouk ($6) is an eggplant spread with house-made bread. Now this is a Moroccan appetizer. Very yummy and the bread paired well too.

Argan-Bistro-lamb

Award-winning Lamb Couscous ($14) has Ras-el-hanout, root vegetables, chickpeas, raisins, and Moroccan jus on top of a bed of couscous. Delicious tender lamb and good portion size.

Argan-Bistro-meatball

Meatball Marrakesh ($12) is baked in Moroccan tomato sauce. It’s was a surprise to have the eggs inside too. M loved the combination since it has 2 of his favourite items – eggs and meatballs.

Argan-Bistro-veggie

Vegetable Taktouka ($11) has tomatoes, sweet peppers, chickpeas, olives and topped with cauliflower. Great amount of flavour!

Argan-Bistro-orange

Moroccan Salade a l’orange ($5) has orange blossom, rosewater, honey, cinnamon, and mint. Its a light and refreshing dessert which I liked after the heavy entrees.

Argan-Bistro-churros

Cinnamon Churros ($6) is stacked like jenga and served with a chocolate orange blossom dip. There’s also berries on the plate. The churros were ok, but because they were thin, it didn’t have that nice fluffy interior.

Argan-Bistro-chocolate-mousse

Chocolate Mousse ($8) is made of couverture chocolate and topped with fresh fruit. M liked it even thought it’s not a traditional Moroccan dessert.

Overall, the food was pretty good and the traditional dishes on their menu are really delicious. A good change to the other food in the area. Moroccan food has an interesting flavour profile. Full of spices but never spicy.
