MedicalGiraffe is back in town! Since she made me pick her up at the Airport, we grabbed a quick bite in Richmond. We had no idea where we were going but we somehow ended up at Michigan Noodle Restaurant. We had no idea what to expect. Since it was lunch, they had some really cheap lunch specials and the congee and noodles were cheap.

The interior is not too bad and have lots of seats. During lunch time it wasn’t too busy.

Spicy Eggplant on Rice is on their lunch menu and it was really large. It’s one of those items that are meant to be shared…. or perhaps you have a large stomach. It was a little bit spicy, but it’s not too bad.

If you needed to add more flavour in your food, they have you usual sauces and spices to add a kick to your food.

Shrimp and pork dumpling noodle soup ($4.80) was surprisingly really good! The dumplings were some of the best dumplings I have ever had. Very good flavour and I could eat this all day. This is my type of comfort food!

Overall good stuff, but for lunch I would stick with congee or the noodle soup!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Cash Only
  • Parking in front
  • Under $10
  • Mediocre service
  • Must get noodle soup (with dumplings or wontons) or congee

BusanGirl really wanted some Dim Sum, so I took her to Fortune House Seafood since it’s in Metrotown. I’ve been there before and I’ve never had any problems here. This visit was quite different and I was pretty annoyed by the horrible service they gave us.

We arrived just in time for last call at 2:30pm since they close their lunch service at 3pm. The hostess was quite rude and told us to order what we wanted as we waited for our table. We shrugged it off since it was a very busy day for them.

When we arrived at the table, we gave the server our order right away. The dim sum took a long time to arrive and the manager kept pressuring us to pay before our orders even arrived. He didn’t say anything, but he kept opening the  little receipt folder to check if we paid it. Just to keep things interesting, we did not pay till the end of our meal. He kept making gestures to make us pay faster before we finished our meal.

They even started rearranging their table set up during the lunch service to prepare for their dinner service. A majority of the diners were still eating and seeing the servers move walls and tables around were super distracting. We heard the managers apologizing to other tables but when they approached our table, they told us to pay the bill. Rude much?

Tea ($1/per head) is charged on your bill without them informing you. They have a good selection of tea as well. If you are really really against paying the tea fee, I’ve heard you can just argue with the manager to remove it. I’ve never paid the tea fee when I go with my family…but this time I was charged. We were kinda mad, but just let it go.

Jumbo Shrimp Dumplings ($5.75) were quite large and tasted good. What I like to do is ask them for some hot sauce since I like a little heat.

Fried Mixed Meat Dumpling ($4.25) is not as big as other places I’ve been too. The sticky dumpling skin is not as thick as other places. Also, their filling is very little compared to other places too. What BusanGirl liked about this was that there was little “meat smell”, which she liked.

Steamed Beef Rice Roll ($5.25) is one of the classic items to get. It has nice minced beef in the middle wrapped with a rice roll with soy sauce on top.

Deep Fried Squid ($7.50) made me quite disappointed. For the price, it was small and lacked flavour. It also looked unappetizing too. It tasted alright, but needed some more salt.

Fortune House Seafood is a very popular Dim Sum restaurant to go to but it can get really really busy and LOUD. Make reservations ahead of time. The price is a bit expensive compared to other chinese restaurants in Vancouver. I think it’s really popular due to the location since it is in Metrotown.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Make reservations if going for Dim Sum
  • If you can’t read Chinese, there is an english menu
  • Lots of parking, closest parking is to park near Urban Behaviour/Zara area.
  • Pretty expensive compared to other places
  • Rude and rushed service
  • Avoid going near 2pm

I was at Metropolis Comics & Toys near Metrotown buying some KidRobot Figurines, when M wanted to get some food close by. He didn’t want to walk far to find food, so we stayed on the same block to find something. I was so surprised at the restaurants on the block! I always thought it was super sketch.

Turns out there is a restaurant called Tai Won specializing in Korean-Style Chinese food. If you have never had Korean Style Chinese food, you must have some! It might even be better than authentic Chinese food. At one point, the restaurant was pretty packed for dinner time.

The tea is complementary like most restaurant and comes in a tea pot.

Their menu is quite simple and does not offer a large array of choices. Nonetheless, the items are good.

Like most Korean restauants, they provide you with complementary side dishes called banchan. Instead of the usual spicy sides such as kimchi, they have pickled radish and cabbage. It is pickled in vinegar and sugar. These are some of my favorite side dishes … and I ate all of them by myself. I didn’t want to share with M. hehehe.

Koon Man Doo / Deep Fried Dumplings ($6.99) has choppped pork and veggies inside. It is perfectly deep fried and has a nice crunch when you bite into it. One of my favorite dumplings ever. Definitely recommended.

Since you want some dipping sauce for the dumplings. Mix these 3 ingredients together. I think it’s vinegar, soysauce and chili powder. Mix these all together and you will get the perfect sauce to go with your fried dumplings.

Bo Keum Bab ($7.99) has fried rice with veggies, shrimp and ham. It is them topped off with the traditional korean black bean sauce. M really liked the dish.

Yoo San Seul Bab ($8.99) has rice with assorted veggies, pork and seafood on top. There’s a lot of sauce, so when you mix it around you will have plenty of sauce and taste of the rice. It kinda reminded me of the chinese egg swirl with rice, but with no egg. Still very delicious.

Overall, very good place despite the somewhat sketchy location.

Words of Wisdom:

A few months ago, there was a fire that started at Japas Bistro, which caused their unit to go up in smoke and affect the neighbouring restaurants as well. I was so sad that Sha Lin Noodles was affected and closed down because they were my go-to noodle place.

After passing by Broadway with M, we saw that they had reopened. We quickly parked the car and lined up. We really didn’t mind the line up since we wanted their noodles so badly! On the plus side, due to the fire, they had to do minor renovations and now the interior looks cleaner.

I first found out about this place when it was featured on Rachel Ray’s show – ‘$40 a Day’ a few years ago. Sha Lin Noodles was highlighted and a few days later I went. Ever since that first time, I fell in love with their food. All their noodles are hand made and their broth has no MSG at all. You can actually watch one of their chefs cooking up the noodles at his station. In this image he is making cutting noodles… thus the knife.

The best noodles to watch are the dragging noodles since they have to stretch the dough out and create an amazing display. It’s really a craft.

Tea comes in little ceramic cups. I was impressed with the service since my cup of tea was never empty.

Theres also the usual sauces where you can spice up your dish. My personal favorite is the hot chili oil. Add a good kick to your noodles.

Pan Fried Dumplings ($10.95)is a large dish. It is meant to be shared amongst a few people. Could be good enough for 4 -5 people. Its funny how it actually resembles a pan.

The dumplings have a nice firm skin with juicy pork inside. The best sauce to go with these dumplings is the black bottle of vinegar. It’s very unique and it’s one of those items to get here. This dish was so large, M and I couldn’t finish it, so we took it back home.

Large Dragging Noodle with Spicy Beef ($8.95) was really good. You can have it spicy or non-spicy. It has large slices of beef, bean sprouts with a delicious savory sauce. M loved this dish since its simple and has a good flavour.

Dragging noodles with chicken and vegetables ($6.95) comes with carrots, bok choy, chicken, noodles and the clean delicious broth. I simply adore this dish, this is my type of comfort food. It’s yet again simple and has great taste. I like to add the spicy chili oil into this dish to add more flavour.

For the longest time, I thought the chicken looked super weird, but it’s just the white meat and how they cook it.

Overall, the food isn’t fancy or anything super impressive. You get a bang for your buck and the food is Chinese type of comfort food.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Under $10 per dish
  • No MSG
  • Large Portions
  • House made noodles
  • Noodles are a must!!!

Mandu and I were out to lunch again. We always seem to have similar working schedules, so it just seems right to grab lunch since we are a skytrain apart.

One day. I was passing by Tinseltown, I saw this crazy open restaurant across from this Daiso looking store. They had some pretty good priced lunch, so I really wanted to try it.

The space is very open, so you do get a lot of natural light from the windows of the mall.

Looking at the menu, they have a “design your own combo” for $9.95. You choose a soup, appetizer and main and it’s just that simple. At this point, we really didn’t know if the quality would be good or not. We were prepared if this was bad or not since its only $10.

I started off with the Spicy & Sour Seafood Soup. Very good balance between the spicy and sour! I usually don’t get this soup, but I wanted to take a gamble and I really liked it!

Mandu started off with the Sweet corn Seafood Soup. It was an average corn soup. It was good.

For the appetizer, we had the vegetarian Spring Roll and the Deep-fried shrimp wontons. They both were nicely fried and just tasted average. Nothing too exciting but really was not bad at all.

For the main, Mandy chose the Coconut Curry chicken with rice. She really enjoyed the dish. Very good and it came with a lot of sauce! You won’t run into that problem where you have too much rice and not enough sauce.

I ordered the Beef with Satay sauce in fried crispy noodle.  The dish was pretty good as well. Lots of good sizable beef slices and the noodles were deliciously crunchy. I am usually picky about how crunchy my noodles are and they did not disappoint.

Overall, we were super surprised at how decent the food was for such a good price. The service did suck though.  The waitress was not very good at all; she was hard to wave down and was very slow in getting us more tea and the bill. I’m usually ok with it, but what ticks me off is when you and the server make eye contact and acknowledges that you need service…but never comes back.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Cheap lunch specials, most items under $10
  • Closest Skytrain – Stadium
  • “Design your own combo” is a good choice if you want to try several items
  • Service is a bit slow

Hello to another Mark’s Food Court Corner! Today I will be reviewing Gourmet Barbeque in Lougheed Mall Food Court. Guess which mall I live close to? No not Lougheed, but I do find myself there quite a lot.

Gourmet Barbeque isn’t a chain as far as I know, it has a similar looking food court restaurant right next to it, so I figure its owned by the same person. Gourmet Barbeque when I first saw it looked sketch; I think the sign and menus threw me off a bit. Don’t let the appearance fool you, this place is awesome!

Gourmet Barbeque serves everything from Greek to Chinese food. I sometimes get their Lamb Pita, because their lamb has a nice unique smoky taste. However, today I decided to get, what I always get, the Chicken Curry on Rice ($5.49). Awesome value for a plate of rice with generous serving of chicken curry. The curry itself is unique. It’s not straight up Chinese curry but close to it. Chicken is boneless, which is a bonus, and it also has carrot and potatoes. Not spicy at all, but pretty flavourful.  $5.50 for a big plate of rice and curry from a food court? Definitely a must get!

To switch things up, I got their Spring Rolls ($2.99). Nothing special here, but has a nice chewy/crunchy texture. Eating both dishes I was stuffed out my mind!

So if you are at Lougheed Mall, don’t go straight to a chain food court restaurant try out the Gourmet Barbeque!

M’s  Words of Food Court Wisdom:

  • Curry Chicken a must!
  • Great value, good food.
  • Get a medium Coke from the fountain with the Curry, matches perfectly!

It’s no surprise to you that I like to go out to eat during game days to avoid the crazy Canucks madness. I am a horrible Vancouverite, but my love of eating is stronger than suffering from anxiety of watching the Canucks games.

M and I went out to Mr. Ho’s Wonton House on Kingsway after watching a movie at Metrotown. I have not been here in years and I do love Chinese food. On the ride from Metrotown, he wanted to go to all these fast food places and I shut down all of his suggestions until we go to Mr. Ho’s. KFC and Subway are not good dinner choices….*sigh.* men…..

I really wanted to get noodles since Kung Fu Panda 2 since it just seemed right to do so. Unfortunately, if I was going to a ramen place, I would have gotten noodles. I saw some of the rice items on Mr. Ho’s menu and that drew my attention… plus noodle at Mr. Ho’s can’t be that amazing.

I think I am a sucker when it comes to Asian themed things such as interior décor. I loved their walls.

Like any Chinese place, you get tea! I also love tea.

M and I started off with the Fried Wontons (6pieces -$4.25). These were huge! We expected the tiny fried wontons…but these were like UFOs. These were so crispy and the best part is the wonton skin…the filling was tiny and very tough to chew, which I found odd.

I ate the whole wonton and I kept asking M why there wasn’t any meat inside. Apparently there was, but I didn’t notice I ate it. Hahaha.

Then he had the Sweet and sour pork with pineapple on rice ($7.25). M loved this sweet and sour pork. One thing that I found this dish was suffering from was the gigantic size of the vegetables. One slice of onion is bigger than the piece of pork. Nonetheless, M still enjoyed it and ate it all.

I had the Prawns with swirl egg on rice ($8.75).  Did I ever tell you I love Love LOVE prawns? Ya, that’s why I got this dish. What I usually worry about saucy dishes with rice is the ratio between the sauce and the rice. If there is not enough sauce to go along with the rice, this just makes me sad. My perfect dish would have more sauce than is needed to eat with the rice.

I loved this dish because I had more sauce and the sauce was pretty good. The prawns and the peas were quite decent.

We also go fortune cookies!

Overall, we had a good dinner here. It wasn’t the best chinese food I have ever ate, but it was decent. There were a few people dining here even though it was a game day. They even brought out a TV since some customers wanted to see the game.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Under $10
  • Free parking on adjacent roads
  • Good for large groups

SkinnyBones was back in town after 1.5 years of exchange to Korea. Flo and I decided to meet up with her to catch up over some food near Kingsway.

Since The One on Kingsway looks super cool, we decided to check it out. They serve the usual type of Taiwanese food found in places like Bubble Word and Beef Noodle House.

The menu was fairly large and it took a while for us to see what we wanted. So, the waiter kept coming back to check up on us about 3 times, up to the point where they stopped approaching our table. Eventually we had to flag them down to take our order.

I ordered the Pineapple and Banana Milk ($6.75). The taste of the drink was really fresh and had a lot of banana inside. It was great but it was lacking one thing – pineapple. I tried really hard to distinguish the tastes from each other, but in the end I concluded that they left out the pineapple or just put in one small piece. I didn’t bother asking the waiter because it was still pretty good and I didn’t feel like complaining.

I ordered the Chicken nuggets with Noodle in Soup ($9.50). This meal is pretty huge and it comes to you to the table on the huge tray. The large bowl of noodles has the vegetables already cut up, which is good because you don’t have to be that weirdo at the table spending forever trying to chew through you vegetables. If you have kids, it’s a good dish to share with them.

The chicken nuggets live up to their expectations and were really good! The meat was nice and tender. The batter was quite light and enjoyable. It took me a while to figure out what was on top, and it was fried basil. It was a nice touch because all the nuggets that would be sitting under the basil left had a slight hint of basil to it.

SkinnyBones ordered the Beef Curry with Rice ($8.50). Since she just came back, she was not use to such large portions.  You will probably get stuffed from this. You get your curry and the rice, and on top of that, you get 4 side dishes. These vary on every visit. She did like it but it was just way too big for her.

Overall, this is not a bad place to go. It’s a good alternative to the usual places near Kingsway like Bubble Word, Estea and Beef Noodle House.  Don’t expect this place to be perfect either since service is a bit lacking.

  • Large portions
  • Under $10
  • Fried Chicken Nuggets!

PedoGirl and I went off to Amelia in New Westminster to FINALLY check out their breakfast. They are known for their affordable breakfasts and Chinese food. You could say Amelia is a hole in the wall restaurant with outdated décor and some good simple breakfast.

There are 2 Amelia Restaurants in the area, but Amelia Café is no longer part of Amelia. They sold the place to other people.

Since we arrived at 2pm, we didn’t know if we wanted to have breakfast or their Chinese food. After much discussion, we decided to order breakfast.

We started off with our pots of tea. PedoGirl got the Red Tea and I stuck with my usual Green tea. They come in small little teapots. There’s really not too much to it since they are just made from tea bags.

As they were about to close soon, they gave us a plate of their fried wontons. The wonton skins were really crispy and not too hard. I think these could be my guilty pleasure because I would want to eat them all day if I had an unlimited amount of these. They would rank 3 in my list of favorite fried things to eat, after ebi mayo and chicken karrage.

PedoGirl ordered the Bavarian Scramble ($6.25). It has diced Bavarian Sausage scrambled with veggies and cheese with pan-fried potatoes and toast. The melted cheddar cheese on top of the scramble made the eggs so much more enjoyable. Cutting into the omelet and then pulling away the stringy cheese is very enjoyable. Haha.

I ordered the Workman’s Special ($5.95). This has 3 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 sausages, pan fried potatoes and toast. I ate this breakfast with ease. Perhaps I am a Workman? If you have a large appetite, this may not fill you up.

The dish was pretty average, but I really loved the bacon! Super crispy to perfection! The sausage was also good.

Afterwards I drank 2 cups of coffee since they needed to get rid of it during closing. I was so wired afterwards! Afterwards we went to Starbucks to get Fraps…I was too hyperactive to function.

Overall, Amelia is not your amazing awesome OMG to die for breakfast, but it is cheap and gets the job done. They cater most to seniors and to the residence in the area. It gets busy on the weekends near peak breakfast time.

Another lunch, another restaurant, but today I found it so difficult to choose where to go, so I strolled up and down Robson Street and saw this restaurant – Next Noodle Bar. I thought it sounded cool and the food items did not seem very expensive, so I took a seat inside.

The inside of the restaurant is quite large.

They have a large menu, but I decided to stick to the lunch specials because it was quick. If I had an unlimited lunch break, I would probably go elsewhere. Sadly, in reality, we do have to be limited to 1 hr…or less sometimes.

I chose the Egg Foo Young ($7.95). It has the egg omelet with shredded chicken, and sweet chili sauce. Inside the omelet, I really could not identify the vegetables in the omelet because it was so well cooked that it became crunchy near the sides.

n

This dish also comes with daily soup, almond pudding, bok choy and salty peanuts.

I did not really have a liking to this dish. The sweet chili sauce threw me off and it did not go well with the dish. I have never had egg foo young before, so I don’t have a benchmark of what it should taste like. All I know is that this dish was not for me.

For $8, it was not a bad price! The food did come quick and there seems to be a few good items on their menu.

In addition to the meal, I ordered the Fried Chicken Wings ($5). It comes with about 6 pieces of chicken wings. These were well prepared and it is the type of chicken wings I love! Simple and deep-fried!  The size of the wings were quite large and had lots of meat. I’d come back just to have the chicken wings.

Overall, the food was cheap and don’t expect all-star quality at these prices but you will be somewhat satisfied.

Word of Wisdom:

  • Under $10 lunch special
  • Good for lunch if in a time crunch
  • Fried Chicken Wings
  • Some items are a hit and miss

A month or so ago, there was a discussion on Chowtimes about having a chowdown at Kalvin’s Restaurant. After much discussion, Kevin from 604foodtography decided to take charge of the chowdown. He put up a post on his blog and sure enough, a great group of 15 got together to have the ultimate chowdown at Kalvin’s Restaurant.

I met a few other bloggers too which was super exciting. The ones that were in attendance were – The Friday LunchThe Petite Foodie, The Daily Slif, Sea Salt with Food, Ed Eats, Chowtimes, Sherman Food Adventures, Yum O Rama, and of course 604Foodtography. There were also non bloggers too that join in on the festivities.

I’ve actually never heard of Kalvin’s Restaurant until I saw it posted on Chowtimes. This is why I love reading other blogs as well; you really discover all the hidden gems in and around the city.

Kalvin’s Restaurant looks like any other Chinese restaurant, so it is quite easy to miss as you are wandering around Victoria Drive. I arrived promptly at 6pm and the restaurant was not busy at all, most of the tables were reserved, so you know it would be a busy day for them as the night went on.

Our table was huge! We had a table that actually fit 15 people. It was like a huge table for huge families, but in our case, a huge table for hungry bloggers and foodies.

Since there were 14 of us, it was tough to figure out what we all wanted to order. Good thing no one had allergies, so this made the process easier. Kevin took the reign and just ordered a huge array of dishes from the menu. Since I can’t read Chinese to save my life, I am no help in that department.

Before I go and start talking about all the dishes we had, what is so awesome and highly amusing about being at a table of foodies it that most people had their huge SLR cameras ready. For a bit I felt kinda inferior since I carry a Canon G10. Still, a great camera, but not an SLR. Ben from Chowtimes brought along his point and shoot camera so I didn’t feel too embarrassed. Every time a new dish would come to the table, everyone had their cameras ready to take multiple shots, eventually people at other tables started staring at us. Kevin commented saying there was a lady at the next table over just staring at us and shaking her head.

After the pictures were done, everyone dug in!

The first dish that arrived was the Fondue Spicy Pork with Organ Stew (Large – $18). If you aren’t Asian, you will probably be disgusted with this dish, it have all the nasty stuff that usual people may not be accustomed to be eating. The most “gross” ingredients you will find in this are pieces of intestines and pork blood. I found this dish to be a bit too spicy for my tolerance level. I was gobbling tea like no tomorrow.

The next dish that arrived was the Pork & Ton Choy in BBQ Sauce ($11.50). Essentially, the name of the dish is how you would describe it. I didn’t really think there was anything too special about it.

The next one was the 5 Spice Beef in Chinese Pancake ($5 per order). I think we had 3 orders of this. This is a green onion pancake wrapped with 5 spice beef. This is probably one of those usual item you would order as Taiwanese snack at those Bubble tea places. I found that I tasted more of the pancake more than the beef. As you can tell, there was one slice of beef, hoisin sauce and no onions… pretty disappointed.

The next dish was the Spicy Pig’s Ear ($4). I personally love spicy pig ear. Some may say it’s gross, but I just love the texture and chewing on the cartilage. I didn’t think this is was too bad, it was quite average and not too spicy.

I think the Shredded Fish with Yellow Chives ($11.50) was a memorable dish. The fish was quite delicate and well prepared. I think this would be a great dish for little kids since you know there are no bones. I remember as a kid, I would try my best to avoid fish because sometimes there are bones.

This was the Chicken with 3 spices (S- $10.50/ L- $20). You are probably wondering what are these 3 spices – soy sauce, sesame oil and rice wine. I liked it! Having those 3 ingredients marinated the chicken very nicely. Great flavour.

The Shredded Beef with Green Onion ($9.75). It was pretty average. Nothing super special.

This dish is the Red fermented deep fried pork ($5). This was probably the one item that I really wanted to try! The pork had a nice light crunch on the outside since it is deep-fried. It was unique and I have never seen anything like it.

This dish – Cold Bamboo Shoot Salad with Mayo ($7.50) was quite a surprise. No, like actually! I don’t think any of us remembered ordering this. Even looking at the bill, it wasn’t on it. Maybe they threw it in because we were such a large party that ordered lots? No clue. This was an interesting dish yet again; bamboo shoots with mayo on top. When I think of bamboo shoots, I think of long tough sticks. In this dish, it was more like fruit with a bunch of mayo dumped on top. I honestly find mayo very strange on cold items, so I was not a fan of this dish. BUT I did enjoy the bamboo on it’s own.

This dish is the Hakka Style Eggplant with Shredded Pork ($8.50). Hakka style basically means the type of cooking in Southern eastern China. The eggplant is cooked till it is mushy. I love eggplant; some people don’t like it because of that texture. In this dish, I found it slightly bland, so perhaps a bit more seasoning would have done the trick.

The next dish – Diced Chicken & Peanuts with Chili Pepper ($9.75) was HOT. Too hot for me to handle! It looks somewhat innocent until you get those red chili peppers in your mouth. BAM! Burning sensation in the face. Sorry, I can’t comment too much about this dish since all I really remember was hot.

This was the Prawn and Pineapple in Mayo ($16). I usually love prawns to death, but this dish was not for me. Hot prawns with mayo…and then fruit with mayo. In my mind, the only mayo that shall ever touch prawns would be in ebi mayo. Fried items + mayo = good. On the bright side, the prawns were nice and big.

String Beans with Minced Pork ($8.50) is your average type of dish found in a restaurant like this. Nothing too special about this dish.

Crispy Salty Peppery Chicken ($6) is your staple dish at a Taiwanese restaurant. At bubble tea joints, it would be a snack…served on rice, served in noodle…etc. Having the item available here was very interesting since its not usually what you would order. The inside was very moist and you can see the juices run from the meat. I thought the seasoning was fine and the skin was nice and crunchy.

I’m sure you know these are Shanghai Style Dumplings ($6). These were ok, pretty average and are not the best dumplings. This was not bad either.

We had quite a fun time with these dumplings to see who would puncture the dumplings first so the soup would spill. The first person to do so was Karl from The Friday Lunch. We all had a good laugh.

Finally! The last dish of the meal was Chicken with Sesame Oil & Wine in Hot Pot ($16). This was a very delicious deep flavored soup. The chicken was tender and went well with the soup. This is the type of soup I would love my parents to make. The first few sips were good but the after taste you could take a bit of the wine. Even though it had wine, you would not get drunk.

Wow, that was a lot of food. 17 dishes in total for 14 people. The bill came out to be $250.32. After tips each person paid $20.50. It was not too bad since we had that many dishes. The service was not bad either, it was amazing that the chefs could crank out so much food in a short amount of time! This dishes came so fast that there were times when we ran out of table space.

By 6:30pm, there were lines outside….as we left there was still a large line up.

I have to give a big shout out to Sherman of Sherman’s Food Adventures for sending me the names of all the dishes. Without him, I would be guessing what everything single dish would be called. Another thanks to Kevin (604Foodtography) for bringing us all together!

Overall, I think Kalvin’s Restaurant was just ok. There were a few average dishes and a few spectacular dishes. For myself, I would probably not revisit this restaurant since it’s a bit out of my way to get to.

If you have finished reading this huge post, you have read a total of 1500 words!

All the way near Waterfront Station lies a street cart specializing in Dim Sum. No need to wait for a table and fight with others to get the last egg tart or buns. Have Dim Sum anytime, in your office, or on the street…..

Walking to the cart, I was approached by someone asking for change but I quickly dodged them and ran to the street cart.

Looking at the menu, there was really one clear choice! Dim Sum Combo ($6.99). Since it is a Dim Sum cart, it should be their specialty.

As I paid for the food, the same person approached me asking for change so I quickly shoved the money back into my pocket but I was so nervous that I dropped all the coins on the floor. FML. I wasn’t that pretty looking either…just Converse, a T-shirt and jeans. I had no sympathy for that man since he kept changing his story of why he needed money. Plus, I’m still a student and I spend all my pay checks eating out.

Once I got my order, I quickly walked away to find a seat somewhere to sit and enjoy this dim sum meal. I chose to use chopsticks but if you aren’t so good using them, you can get a fork instead.

This Dim Sum Combo ($6.99) has a pork bun, gai lan, 2 pan fried dumplings, 2 shrimp dumplings, and 2 sui mai.

Everything came out right away from the bamboo steamers except for the Gai Lan. It was made on the spot. The Gai Lan was sauteed with garlic and topped with sesame seeds. Very simple and probably the best part of this meal.

Everything else was pretty bland and nothing compared to the Chinese restaurants. It seems like everything was frozen and just steamed up. I think I can find better frozen Dim Sum from T&T. I think I just have high standards for Dim Sum because I’m Asian and thats what we do on Saturday mornings.

Even though, this lunch totally sucked, it was ok for $6.99 considering its a food truck in Downtown.

They also give you a fortune cookie with your combo! I was actually really excited because I was craving the sweet taste. I opened the packaging and was about the crack it open to reveal my fortune BUT the cookie was flexible and it wouldn’t crack open.

WORST FORTUNE COOKIE EVER. It was so flexible, you could bend it back into a flat circle. This is not Dim Sum Express’s fault, but they should be aware of the quality of fortune cookies they purchase.

My fortune said “Try a new system or a different approach“. Try a new system? Should I switch to Linux? Should I try an XBOX 360? I would say this advice would be more suitable for Dim Sum Express. Please order better fortune cookies and make better Dim Sum.

Word of Advice:

  • Very bland Dim Sum
  • Under $10
  • Many items to order
  • Close to Waterfront Skytrain
  • Fortune Cookie let down

M and I were near Metrotown and we do what we do best – eat. After many failed attempts of going to other restaurants, we stuck with Curry King – HK Style Cafe. M wanted to go to Oscars and I just wanted to review a new restaurant…so we drove around and around and decided this was the place.

Curry King is located on Kingsway close to Saffron and Bubble World. Lots of space inside for groups of 4 or 5. Like most HK Style cafes, they have set menus and the usual items.

M and I started off with Lemon Coke and Cold Milk tea. Pretty usual and nothing cool about it. I prefer my cold milk tea to come with liquified sugar to add however less or more I want, but oh well. M’s Lemon Coke had a strong Lemon taste due to the 4-5 slices of lemon found inside it.

The set mini meals come with soup and today their daily soup was a cream soup with ham, corn and fish. Decent soup but the fish had a very odd texture. It wasn’t flaky like a fish, but more of a solid block. Very odd.

I ordered the Chicken Steak with Rice Mini Meal (~$8). This is probably the best chicken steak I’ve had at any HK style Cafe. The chicken was nice and juicy on the inside. The outer part was sightly crispy and the black pepper sauce went well with it.

There were more vegetables! I love vegetables.

M ordered the Meat sauce with rice in a Stone Bowl ($8.95). It has meat sauce, raw egg, and peas on top of rice. At first it looks like a large amount of sauce and meat, but when you begin mixing it all together, there really isn’t that much meat. M was a bit disappointed. No meat to be found for the carnivore. Even with the amount of sauce, he said it lacked flavour.

He even stole a bit of my black pepper sauce for his rice….then he asked the waitress for hot sauce… and then even considered asking for MSG or soy sauce.

I took a few bites out of his dish and it wasn’t too bad. It still had a good flavour, but I guess it wasn’t his type of thing. This meal does have a lot of rice, so you will get full.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Free rear parking
  • Under $10
  • I <3 Beef steak or Chicken Steak
  • M’s wisdom is if you get any kind of rice Stone Bowl, press the rice against the sides to get them crispy!

After looking at the bank accounts and bills, I thought it would be best to try to eat meals $15 and under. Since M and I were on Kingsway, we thought going to Congee Noodle King would be a good idea.

Congee Noodle King has lots of round tables that fit 8 people. The interior is bright and mostly large groups/families are here.

Looking at some of the plates and bowls, M was very turned off by the quality of it since the tops were chipped  and super scratched up.  In the picture, they look ok, but if you look closer you can see how you may be afraid to eat from them .

We started off with ordering cold milk tea. I really found this to be a bit on the sweet side. I would prefer getting my own little container of syrup to tweak the amount of sweetness.

M ordered the sweet and sour pork on rice. This sweet and sour pork was not very good at all. There was way too much coating around the pork that you could not really taste the pork. M is a huge sweet and sour pork fan, but Congee Noodle King did not do this dish justice.

You would probably get better Sweet and Sour Pork at Manchu Wok at a food court than at Congee King.

Since this restaurant is called Congee Noodle King, I just had to have the Congee. I ordered the diced fresh oyster and minced pork congee. It has green onions, coriander and salty peanuts. The congee tasted very good and had no complaints.

It was a good texture and it was not too runny or too thick.

Overall, I find some of the dishes here at Congee Noodle King a hit or a miss.

I usually go to Chinese restaurants speaking English just to see if they will treat me differently. Usually there is no problem with the service.

In this case the service was a bit lacking, I called for the bill but it never came (I asked for it in cantonese – “mai dan”) . She even acknowledged me, so I am sure she knew that I wanted the bill. I asked another waitress for the bill but I could hear them telling other staff to take care of it. Eventually the bill came but it took them a while to come back to get our change, so we went up to the counter so it would make the process a bit faster. M was already pissed off about the subpar Sweet and Sour Pork.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Limited parking in the rear
  • Park in residential areas
  • Can’t go wrong with congee or the fried items
  • Cash Only

M wanted to go to Crystal Mall to buy some cheap cables for his TV/computer monitor since his HDMI cord was malfunctioning.

Since we were both a bit hungry, we went to Libo Cafe at the Crystal Mall food court. We’ve been here many times and the food is decent and cheap.

Their lunch combo menu is quite straight forward. Choose an item labeled number 1 -9, and then you also get a free drink and soup!

M ordered combo #5, which is Ham, pork cutlet, egg with curry and rice ($7.25). He chose the russian Borscht and cold milk tea. The ham was very thinly sliced and nothing special. Its basically the ones that are from the grocery stores. The Egg was also normal. The pork cutlet had lot’s of bones. M doesn’t like bones… He HATES them! The Russian Borscht was the worst one M tasted. M’s favorite soup from Chinese places is the Russian Borscht, but this one tasted pretty bland and rather disgusting.

The only best thing about this meal was the curry! Libo curry sauce is incredibly spicy, but very delicious. So good, M wanted to by a bowl full to take home.

I ordered the black pepper sauce Chicken and beef steak with spaghetti ($7.25).

I thought the beef steak was cooked nicely since it was pink in the middle and not tough. The chicken steak was also good, slightly crispy on the inside and juicy in the middle. The black pepper sauce was very peppery and super strong. Decent sauce since I do like it super peppery. One thing I wished they had was more sauce since there was a lot of spaghetti.

On the side I got the potato bacon soup and lemon tea. Lemon tea was good as usual.

The Potato Bacon Soup was alright. It did have a potato texture to the soup and had real bacon bits in the soup. Decent but not my favorite soup from this place.

  • Under $10
  • Large menu

Jojocake, KoreanGirl and I were searching for food since Jojocake’s parents left her to fend for herself. How can she fend for herself if she does not even have essentials like milk? She called up KoreanGirl and I to go eat dinner.

Our first stop was supposed to be Pho 101, but when we walked into the restaurant…everyone looked at us funny as we sat down at a booth. We didn’t understand why there were mass amounts of spring rolls everywhere, nor all the awkward looks towards us. Apparently it closed 5 mins earlier … but no one told us they were closed until after many many awkward minutes. We felt embarrassed so we decided to drive west.

What was on Hastings that would be open after 8pm? We drove to Bo Laska King’s Bubble and Bits since I know for sure they are open till midnight. When we arrive, they were closed but the sign said they were open 7 days a week till midnight.

Another fail…. so what is the one place we know that for sure will not close early. E. Tea on Rupert and 22nd.

I got one of their dinner combos – crispy chicken + meat sauce on rice ($9.50).

I really did not take a liking to this meal. The crispy chicken pieces had a lot of cartilage and tendon still in the meat. So, I was constantly picking stuff out of my mouth.

The meat sauce on rice was not very hot. The sauce and the meat were room temperature and the rice was a bit hot.

KoreanGirl ordered the Crispy chicken with noodle ($6.95).

The meal was quite simple, crispy chicken and a bowl of noodles. There was a lot of noodles.

JojoCake ordered the Baked Curry Pork Cutlet on Rice ($7.50). As you can probably tell, the images above are NOT anything resembling curry.

When JojoCake’s order arrived, it looked more like a baked seafood. She is allergic to seafood, so for them to bring the wrong dish to a person with allergies is a no no. Good thing she figured out it was not the right order and asked the waitress about it.

The waitress brought back a menu to confirm which was the right item she wanted. She quickly confirmed the order and sent it back to the kitchen.

At this point, KoreanGirl and I were almost done eating our own dishes.

Next, the waitress brings another dish to the table, this time it could have been mistaken for the curry pork cutlet, but when Jojocake began poking around,  it was mostly cheesy meat sauce and seaweed on top of rice.

At this point, she just really wanted her curry pork chop cutlet since she was STARVING! We talked to the waitress and she believed it was the Curry Porkchop cutlet, so she goes to the back to talk to the kitchen. Turns out, this was not the curry porkchop cutlet.

When KoreanGirl and I finished our meal, the correct dish for JojoCake arrived.

The appearance of the Curry Porkchop cutlet was not the best. The curry sauce was very watery and was not baked very well. As she stirred the sauce onto the rice, it started to become more of a congee type thing rather than rice.

She was very outraged.

As we were very disheartened about the visit to E. Tea, we expected E. Tea to be more respectful of their customers and at least offer some sort of compensation for the trouble. As we asked for the bill, the waitress said nothing as she handed us our bill. Not even a sorry for the trouble.

We just paid $27.33 and just left. No tips, just exactly $27.33. We felt slightly guilty for not tipping, but on the other hand it was a horrible experience. We jumped into my car and drove away.

I’ve been a customer for many years and I did notice a decline in their service and food.  It is safe to say, we will never return to E. Tea.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Decent prices
  • Open late
  • Parking in front
  • Accepts Mastercards/Visa/Cash/Debt

Beside T&T at Metrotown is a cafe place called Dessert Dynasty. They sell desserts and different types of bubble tea. If you are ever at the mall and wanted a bit of something sweet, it’s a decent place to head to.

I remember when I was younger…so many bbt places at Metro and I couldn’t decide which one to go to…. Till this day, I still can’t figure out which one is my favorite.

The menu is both in Chinese and English, so you will have no issues reading it. I usually skip reading the menu and get my 2 staple items – Milk tea and bubble waffles! You can’t get anymore asian than that. (You probably could but this is how I roll).

The Cold Milk Tea ($3ish) was like most average milk teas. It was slightly on the sweet side but not too bad. I find that as I get older I like things to be less sweet. I know I’m not THAT old, but I like to save my teeth for the future.

If you are like me, you may want to get half sweet. ( Plus, it’s less calories!)

Lastly, the Bubble Waffle ($3.33) was pretty good. A bubble waffle is basically little ball of puffy waffles.  They mix this egg batter and pour it into a waffle-maker with a honeycomb pattern. It gets cooked, and voila! You have your waffle balls – crunchy on the outside, and if cooked just right, slightly chewy on the inside.

I thought the ones at Dessert Dynasty wouldn’t be that great since I’ve heard mediocre review about this place. The lady today made it well, nice and soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Yummy!

Overall, Dessert Dynasty is pretty average and not super outstanding. It’s place to go if you are in the area and want some sweets.

My aunt came and visited for the past weekend and as per usual, when relatives arrive we must go have dim sum. My mother really likes Fortune House at Metropolis and I really don’t mind as long as there is shrimp.

I’ve done a review here before but a few things have changed. They have a built in speaker system in the waiting area, so when you are outside waiting for your number to be called, you can hear it from outside.

At first I didn’t anticipate any loud PA noises, so when they called another family, I automatically flinched in fear.

While we were waiting, my aunt asked me what I wanted to order, so we picked up a menu and I pointed out all the items that had shrimp in it. To my surprise…she would actually order all those items. This is how this dim sum became packed full of shrimp!

On the table, they give you an explanation of how the dim sum works at Fortune House.

As per usual, SuiMai ($3.95) must be ordered.

Shrimp and Chive dumpling ($4.95)

Jumbo Har Gau ($5.45), it’s basically like the shrimp and chive dumpling, but with no chives.

Spare Ribs ($3.95)

Shanghai Pork Dumplings ($3.95). There were not that great since we had so many other dishes that it was left for about 10 minutes. It’s best to eat this right away or else it won’t tast very good..or hot.

Shrimp Bean Curd Roll ($3.95)

Fish and preserved egg congee ($6.95)

Prawn Rice roll ($5.45)

Donut rice roll ($4.95). We really did not like this dish. usually the donut it decently crispy but today it really wasn’t at all.

Deep Fried Wontons ($4.95)

Shark Fin Dumpling ($5.45)

Black sesame Rolls ($2.95). What I LOVE to do with these are to unravel them and eat them like fruit roll up. When I was a kid, we use to call these “film” because it reminded us of the film you would put into the cameras. Eating it the way we eat it is probably the most ugly thing you will ever see. Probably very improper as well.

Mango pudding ($2.95). This is probably the cutest thing they have on their menu. Great for kids! My little sister loved it so much that she gobbled it up without sharing.

That was a lot of their shrimp dishes. Beware, if you eat dim sum with me, there will be shrimp. hahaha. =D

Words of Wisdom:

  • Make reservations if going for Dim Sum
  • If you can’t read Chinese, there is an english menu
  • Lots of parking, closest parking is to park near Urban Behaviour/Zara area.
