Chung Chun Rice Hot Dog is an global chain for the popular Korean street food – Korean rice dog. They have a wide range of deep-fried rice hot dogs that are stuffed with sausages, mozzarella, or other items surrounded by a rice batter.

They recently opened on the corner of Robson and Denman serving up these addictive hot dogs. There aren’t a lot of places doing this, so they have been very popular since their opening.

With Covid-19 pandemic, they have been offering take out options. When you get to the store, there is a line up to order and then another line up to wait for your order outside. They do a great job making sure everyone is socially distant and wearing masks.

Menu

The menu has 16 different items and so many hot dogs to choose from. There are different toppings you can add to it too like honey butter, sugar, ketchup, and mustard among many.

When you get your order, a lot of the hot dog will look very similar, so they colour coat the bottom so you can see which one is which.

Chung Chun Rice Hot Dog Taste Test

We ordered 5 different rice hot dogs – jumbo, double cheese, sausage tteok, Squid ink cheese hot dog, and ramen chip hot dog.

If you’re doing take out and have to drive a fair distance to go home and eat, make sure you don’t sauce up your hot dog with ketchup or mustard and it will make the exterior of the hot dog a bit soggy by the time you get home. I also make sure to keep the box open so condensation doesn’t build up in the box.

I actually prefer having not too much cheese in my hot dog, so we gravitate towards the jumbo, squid ink cheese dog, and the ramen chip hot dog as there was more hot dog. With the thicker rice batter, I felt that the sausage add a lot more flavour to the experience. When paired with ketchup and mustard, its great. It’s like a corn dog but with rice instead. With the double cheese hot dog, it was 2/3 cheese and then 1/3 sausage.

Reheating

If your hot dog does need to be reheated, I put mine in a toaster oven for a few minutes. Simple and you only need a few minutes. It will also help crisp up the outside too.

Final Thoughts

For the price and what you get, it’s solid. We ate 2 each and were super stuffed. We love all the ones that have lots of sausage like the jumbo, squid ink cheese dog, and the ramen chip hot dog.

Check out Chung Chun Rice Hot Dog if you love Korean street food.

Chicken World just opened their newest location in Downtown Vancouver near English Bay. Their first two locations are in Surrey and now, they have expanded. You don’t have to travel to Surrey to get a taste of Chicken World.

We were invited to give it a try to see how it compares to other fried chicken shops in town.

Menu

Gabbar Chicken Burger

This beast of a burger has two pieces of chicken, lettuce, and sauce. You get to choose between mild or spicy. We went with mild to get a good taste of the chicken. The chicken was fried nicely and remained juicy. It’s a pretty solid chicken burger and we would highly recommend it.

Bewafa Beef Burger

Another double beef patty burger and it comes with melted cheese, lettuce, mayo and tomato. You can choose between mild and spicy, but it’s recommended to get mild. It was decent but their chicken burgers are superior.

Fried Chicken

The fried chicken is nicely battered and fried to a crispy perfection. The inside is very juicy.

Peri Peri Oven Roasted Chicken

This has a nice kick of spice to it and it is a touch more dry than the fried chicken.

Chicken Poutine

The fries have a nice texture and flavour. The gravy consistency is thick and a touch on the salty side. The chicken bites have a nice kick of spice but all together its a bit salty for our personal preferences.

Arabian Rice

It’s a nice side to accompany the chicken if you want the meal to be more filling.

Chicken Wings in Honey Garlic

The wings have a nice batter and fried well. The sauce is very thick and sticky so it coats all over the chicken. There was a touch too much sauce. These wings go well with rice.

Mango Ice Cream Sheikhs

It’s a pretty sweet ending to the meal. As there is a caramel drizzle on the sides of the cup, it is sweeter than we would like.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the chicken is fried well and has a great batter. The flow of traffic at this new location is quite steady so the food stays fresh. This is major comfort food and it’s a great addition to the neighbourhood. Great for fried chicken.

Mumbai Local is been a local favourite on Davie Street for their fun and authentic Mumbai street food. The spices and flavour combinations of their dishes are very addictive and will be leaving you wanting more. Executive Chef Shreyash Kulkarni wanted to keep their dishes as authentic as possible, thus why the menu has a lot of traditional Indian names. You won’t find the usual butter chicken on the menu! A lot of dishes on the menu have a rich history from the British colonization of India.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, they have made sure to keep safety a top priority while keeping their customers fed. Their patio is open and you can enjoy your meal there. Their indoor dining is still open as well.

You can also call them directly for takeout and delivery. They are listed on UberEats and DoorDash.

Patio

The newly built patio is on David Street and it was interesting to sit right in the middle of the street. It wasn’t weird or too loud at all. On a nice hot sunny day, the patio is perfect with bites and a drink.

Interior

I love the main wall of the restaurant as it shows imagery of Mumbai. The dining area is open and everyone is spaces a table apart.

Menu

Chaat Sampler

This dish is really fun and a great way to try out different items. You get 2 pieces of each chaat (Shev Puri, Pani Puri, Dahi Puri) and a bowl of Bhel Puri.

  • Pani Puri
Hollow crackers served with lightly spiced chickpeas, spicy mint and chilli water, sweet tamarind and dates water. You fill the hollow crackers with the different items.
  • Shev Puri
Flat cracker loaded with potato, tamarind chutney, garlic chutney, shev, onion and cilantro. We enjoyed the potatoes and sweetness of the tamarind chutney.
  • Dahi Puri
Hollow crackers filled with spiced yogurt, potato, red spicy chutney, tamarind chutney, shev, onion and cilantro
  • Bhel Puri
A savoury mixture of puffed rice, fried dal, crackers, onion, sweet tamarind – date chutney, spicy chilli chutney and cilantro. It is spicier compared to the other ones.

It’s really good and a one bite dish. Absolutely love the flavours and texture. A great item to share among 2 people.

Mumbai Special Chilli Cheese Toast

This is a butter toasted sandwich stuffed with spiced potato, mixed peppers, green chillies, cheese, served with a side of mint chutney, ketchup and cheese. The bread is nicely grilled and reminds us of a samosa. We were surprised sandwiches with cheese is such a popular street food in India.

Masala Pav

The masala pav has butter pav tossed with onions and butter masala bhaji , garnished with cilantro. This was addictive. The bun is very soft and covered in all that delectable sauce. We could keep on eating this over and over again.

Chicken Malai Kebab

The chicken malai kebab has is made with tender boneless chicken cooked with cream, cheese, ghee and green chillies. This dish was stellar. The chicken is very tender as its cooked in a special Japanese grill and then finished off on a char grill. Really good flavours.

Kombadi Vade

This dish has chicken leg cooked with caramelized onion, fresh grated coconut and coastal spice. It is served with a side of steamed rice and vade.

The chicken leg was very tender and we were very impressed with how they cook their meats. The curry is very flavourful with a hint of spice.

Railway Mutton Curry

This is a newer item on the menu with goat meat cooked in house made meat spice blend, yogurt and coconut milk. It is served with side of chapati and rice. It has a kick of spice and the goat was nice and tender.

Falooda

It is made with rose milk, vermicelli, chia seeds, pistachio, almonds, and vanilla ice cream. It’s a really delicious treat with a good amount of texture and and fragance.

Final Thoughts

Mumbai Local is an awesome place to hang out with friends over some tasty dishes. We loved the dishes and would definitely be back again. Highly recommended.

Jingle Bao is located close to Denman and Robson serving up delicious buns, noodles and dumplings. Of those three items, the freshly made xiao long bao (XLB) is really what draws people in. The Signature Rainbow XLB and Supersize XLB makes it very instagram worthy.

We were invited to give their menu a try. We’ve dined here in the past and now we’re back again.

Dining In

When we were dining here, we saw they are using proper safety protocols during this pandemic to keep everyone safe. You can see all staff are wearing masks and there is plexiglass divider separating the dining area and preparation areas.

All guest were spaced far apart so there is proper social distancing.

Take Out and Delivery

It is always best to call them directly for take out as they retain more profit instead of giving a cut to the delivery companies.

If you do want to do delivery, they are on Uber Eats, Door Dash and Skip the Dishes for those in Vancouver.

Menu

Iced Lemon Tea

A classic drink made of black tea, sugar, and lemon. Can’t go wrong with this choice.

Hot Chrysanthemum Tea

If you’re looking for a hot tea, the hot chrysanthemum tea is served in a pot and is deliciously floral.

Signature Rainbow XLB

There is a colourful assortment of XLB in this bamboo basket. It has:

  • Classic (white)
  • Sriracha (pink)
  • Mushroom (brown)
  • Shrimp (orange)
  • Spinach (green)
  • Curry (yellow)
  • Garlic (blue)

Each XLB sits on top of a slice of carrot to prevent it from sticking to the bamboo steamer. It’s a very colourful dish. You’ll want to wait for it to cool down a bit so you don’t burn your mouth with the soup hiding inside the dumplings. The rainbow XLB is a great way to try a variety of their XLB on the menu. Our favourite was the mushroom truffle XLB.

Its hard to share, so we recommend one order per person so you can try them all.

Mushroom Truffle XLB

Just our luck that we also ordered a whole order of Mushroom Truffle XLB. We loved it. It has a very savoury umami flavour to it.

Crispy Snowflake Dumping

You can choose between pork, veggie, beef, chicken, or fish. We ended up choosing pork. The dish has a nice presentation. It is pan-fried and attached to each other like a snowflake, thus giving it the signature name. It is topped with green onions and spicy mayo sauce. The filling felt very soft and fell apart. We would have preferred it to be a bit firmer.

Taiwanese Salt and Pepper Chicken

This is a classic Taiwanese dish and it’s nice to have something fried to compliment the steamed items in the meal. All the chicken sits on top of a bed of fried vermicelli noodles. A solid dish compared to other places around town.

BBQ Pork and Seasonal Greens Chow Mein

It’s been a while since we had a chow mein dish and it also has seasonal greens in it. It’s not something we usually order but it was solid. Not too oily and good depth of flavour. This dish is good to order if you want more of a filling dish.

Seafood with Sticky Rice

In this sticky rice, it has tiger prawns, scallop, squid, onion and veggies served on top of a bed of sticky rice. The dish was bland and underwhelming. It could have been better executed.

Malay Cake

The malay cake is served in a steamer. It has good flavouring but was a touch dense and could have been fluffier.

Green Tea Sesame Ball

Each order comes with 2 pieces. This was one of our favourite items. It is nice and chewy on the outside. The inside has liquid black sesame inside. Absolutely loved it and its not too sweet. Highly recommended.

Final Thoughts

Overall, you can’t go wrong with their xiao long baos and theres such a variety. We enjoyed watching the chef craft each dumpling for the order and there are no secrets to them. Just good quality ingredients.

We definitely recommend some XLB and their green tea sesame balls.

Kaneko Hannosuke is a popular Japanese restaurant known for their rice bowls topped with tempura like conger eel, shrimp, squid, and soft boiled egg. They pride themselves of using fresh ingredients and all bowls are made to order.

I just came back from Japan a few months ago and Kaneko Hannosuke was on my list, but with a baby in tow, it was hard to come here for lunch. Fortunately, they just opened it’s first Canadian location in Vancouver.

It’s surprisingly one of the only dedicated tempura bowl places in Vancouver. I am quite surprised, but glad it’s adding diversity to Vancouver as we have a lot of sushi restaurants already. Time for some tempura!

Interior

The interior is a decent size, but its really packed right now as it just opened. I came here on a weekday lunch and arrived 15 minutes early to ensure a seat. The restaurant didn’t fully fill up till around noon, then there was a line forming outside.

Babies

For babies, there are booster seats available as well as plastic cups with water, bowl, and a spoon that Kaneko Hannosuke provides. It was good that we didn’t have to bring our own booster seat.

There is also a smaller tendon bowl on the menu for kids too, but I wouldn’t recommend it for smaller kids like our little one who is 11 months old and she threw up after cause it was too oily. Totally my own fault cause she’s not ready for the tempura life yet.

Menu

How to Eat Tendon

At the table, there are instruction on how to eat tendon. Here is a summary:

  1. Take a big bite of the conger eel and shrimp topped with their sauce
  2. Taste the rice with the sauce
  3. Halfway through the bowl, break the soft egg and mix with the rice for a smoother texture
  4. There is spicy powder on the side if you choose to add it to your dish. black bean tea and side dishes are served to relieve fullness.

Premium Tempura Bowl

This bowl has conger eel, shrimp, assorted seafood tempura, soft boiled egg, seaweed, green bean, special sauce, and rice. For a North American appetite, this sounds like a big bowl, but in reality, it isn’t.

The bowl is actually thick and raised, so it looks like there is a lot.

If it’s your first time here, you gotta go with the premium as the conger eel tempura is very famous.

My husband came here twice already and he noted that the consistency of the conger ell tempura can be a hit or miss. One of his friends got a weird super boney piece which wasn’t enjoyable. Luckily, for him both of his premium tempura bowls had good cut of conger eel.

Special Tempura Bowl

This has the white fish, shrimp, assorted seafood tempura, soft boiled egg, seaweed, green bean, special sauce, and rice. This isn’t as big but still very enjoyable. The difference is the white fish. I enjoyed the sauces and followed the steps to maximize my enjoyability.

I did find that some pieces of tempura were crisp and some others were soggy depending on how much sauce it is covered in.

Tempura Bowl for Kid

The tempura bowl for a kid is the smallest, but has the key ingredients like shrimp, pumpkin, soft boiled egg, seaweed, and green bean tempura over rice. This is a good size for older kids. It was too oily for my 11 month, who eats everything.

Matcha Ice cream

We ended the lunch sharing a scoop of matcha ice cream to break the oiliness of the dishes. It was decent, but not that great of a matcha ice cream. Not very strong at all.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s great that tendon is now in Vancouver as it’s different than any other tempura bowl you can find in the city. Expectation are definitely high for this place as it’s a International chain from Japan. How does this compare to tendon in Japan? Definitely similar as it wasn’t the best tendon ever. It was ok for what it was.

We found there was issue with service as we were overcharged on our bill. They charged us for 4 tempura bowls when we got 3. Good thing I checked the bill as I thought our bill was really high. Another thing with service is that if you have a large group, your bowls will come at different time and sometimes there will be a large gap in when the bowls arrive. So, maybe one person bowls arrive and then 5 minutes later the rest arrive.

There is also consistency with the tempura as well. Some items overcooked, or the cuts of conger eel aren’t good.

As they just recently opened, I am sure they are working on tweaking the little issues as they go. Will I got back? High chance as it’s really the only place to get a selection of Tempura bowls. It’s not something I’ll have often, but when I’m craving it, I’ll come here again.

If you’re looking for something different to do this year with friends or family, you’ll want to check out H Tasting Lounge’s Winterlust, their Winter Patio experience. This is the first of it’s kind in Vancouver, where you get to dine in cozy ‘snow globes’ outdoors on their patio. It is available now till February 29, 2020.

We got a sneak peek of Winterlust at H Tasting Lounge, so you can see what it’s like before going.

Reservations and Details

It is highly recommended that you make reservations to guarantee a seat as they only have 3 ‘snow globes’ at one time and seats up to 6 guests per globe.

Do note, there is a minimum spend of $200 per group and limited to 2 hours. You can book them for lunch and dinner seatings. During the day, you can even get their afternoon tea set.

Inside the Snow Globe

As there are 3 snow globes, each one is set up slightly differently, but nonetheless still seat up to 6 people. We were in the second globe and it has a large dining table where it can fit all the food we ordered. hahaha.

Even thought you are seated outside, it is still warm inside the snow globe. It is heated by 2 Dyson warmers and there is a sound system for music, because we all know every great dinner experience has some great tunes.

As for the decor, there are different types of decor in each globe, but it all has the same type of feel.

At night, there isn’t much of a view, but I absolutely love the gas fireplace surrounding the snow globes. It makes it feel so intimate and cozy. I love it.

Menu

There is a featured menu just for Winterlust, but you can always order off the regular menu. The Winterlust menu comprises of drinks, fondue, snacks, and dessert, which work well with the setting.

Cocktails and Zero Proof Mocktails

H Tasting Lounge is known for their excellent cocktail program, so their drinks are really great. There is a little something for everyone who dines here. I got the Saturday Morning Cartoons and it was just so fun as well as delicious. Then I went with the Yuzu Spritz, which was very refreshing.

Saturday Morning Cartoons
Brandy, Irish Whiskey, Reese’s peanut cup cereal, lemon, stout
Cranberry Cobbler
gin, cranberry, all spice dram, lemon
Spiced Cider
lot 40 rye, apple cider, demerara, orange, clove
Mulled Wine
red wine, holiday spices, brandy, peach schnapps
Rolling Uphill (Tealeaves Co. mountain berry tea, coconut, lime)
Yuzu Spritz (yuzu, lemon, cucumber, soda)

Fondue

What is more fun the cozying up the the snow globes with fondue? They have a meat and potatoes version and a vegetarian version of the fondue. With both versions, the cheese is comprised of a mixture of Swiss and Gruyere. You can also add a it more to add Truffle Mushrooms & Truffle Oil to make it more decadent and fragrant.

I am more of a Meat and Potatoes kind of girl, but it’s great that there are more options on the menu. I really enjoyed chatting and picking away at the fondue.

Meat and Potatoes Fondue with shrimp, sausage, beef filet, crusty bread or pretzel rolls, roasted potatoes, tomatoes, endives
Vegetarian Fondue with crusty bread or pretzel rolls, roasted potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, roasted pumpkin, brussels sprouts, endives

Two Rivers Postmark Stout Beef Wurst

There are 2 pieces of wurst with curry ketchup, fries, and mustard. It’s definitely German and I love how they are working with local producers like Two Rivers. A good snack for the table.

Kale Salad

The kale salad is a good option if you want something on your own or share with others. It has roasted sweet potato, maple pecans, and roasted fennel.

Dessert

Of course ending the night with some dessert is a must. Whether it be the galette or the baked chocolate ganache, you can’t go wrong. I enjoyed both. If you want something unique, the baked chocolate ganache will give you a little surprise with those pop rocks.

Winter Fruit and Ricotta Galette
Baked Chocolate Ganache
spiced hazelnuts, pop rocks, orange oil

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed this dining experience in the snow globes at H Tasting Lounge and I would definitely want to return with friends. The food menu on the Winterlust menu is small, but you can always order off the regular menu.

You’ll want to make reservations as soon as you can because it’ll be a popular place to dine in the evening when the sun goes down.

Don’t we all love a good discount? First Table, is a restaurant discovery platform that connects diners around the world with local restaurants that offer its members 50% off the food bill at specified times.

Every week, participating Vancouver restaurants will list their ‘first tables’ for the upcoming seven days on the First Table website, allowing diners who pay a $10 booking fee to secure a table at the restaurant of their choice and 50% off the food bill for two to four people.

There are many Vancouver restaurants added on an ongoing basis and the list is pretty good including restaurants like Nuba, Ancora, Fable Diner, Cuchillo, and The Greek by Anatoli to name a few.

We were invited to Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar by First Table to get a sneak peek of this experience.

Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar

Papi’s Seafood and Oyster Bar is located right by English Bay and has a cozy ambiance and decor appropriate for its seaside location. There are wood ceiling and floor mimicking a boat’s deck.

They even have a beautiful feature wall drawn by a local artist in the back dining room. Their choice of music is questionable with rap, dance and pop music, when perhaps classical is more fitting. Nonetheless, people come here for the seafood.

Chips

We started off the meal with these chips instead of the usual bread. It has paprika and other seasoning. It reminded us of shrimp crackers as its light and crunchy. It came with a spicy aioli which was a nice touch.

Fried Oyster

The fried oyster has charcoal butter, lemon crème fraiche, and jalapeno. It is a unique dish to Papi’s and it did stand out compared to the other dishes on the menu. It’s not aesthetically pleasing, but nicely fried and not greasy at all. Good for those who don’t eat raw oysters.

Octopus and Popcorn, red pepper, smoked paprika, warm bread with pesto

The popcorn gave the dish an interesting look, but didn’t add much to it in terms of taste. The octopus was cooked well and on the soft side without it being chewy. It looks to be the body of the octopus rather than the tentacle which most restaurants use.

Lobster Risotto

This was the favourite dish of the night. It has a generous amount of lobster. With a regular price tag of $30, it’s a steal at 50% off with First Table. Highly recommended.

Coffee Espuma

The coffee espuma is part of their 3-course meal. We’ve never had this before and it was fluffy and light.

Brownie with mousse

We ended the meal with their brownie mousse. Nice presentation but the taste wasn’t anything special.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I love the First Table concept and the discounts of course. For people who love to eat early around 5-6pm, it’s perfect as you can enjoy the discounts. I love that it helps restaurant owners fill tables at the beginning of the evening. For myself, dining at 5-6pm is perfect since I have a child. Not everyone wants to eat so early, but when there is a discount that is too good to pass up, why not?

Kosoo Korean Cuisine has launched some new features this fall – Lunch boxes, Gugsu, and Sundubu. I love seasonal menus as the ingredients are in season and generally fit the weather. As it is becoming colder and rainy in Vancouver, we are craving more comforting dishes.

Menu

Lunch Boxes

We love a good lunch box where there are so many different items in the meal. There are a few different restaurants that do lunch boxes but this one a pretty nice one for Downtown Vancouver. The prices of the lunch boxes vary depending on the meat option you choose.

There are 5 options:

  • Bulgogi
  • LA Galbi
  • Pork Galbi
  • Bossam
  • Gochujang Pork Belly

The box has 6 different side dishes with mushroom salad, daily soup and Korean Yogurt. The side dishes are usually kimchi with bean sprouts, egg omelette, 2 kinds of pancakes, takoyaki and dduk galbi. All very great side dishes.

Lunch box with bulgogi
Lunch box with LA Galbi

The LA Galbi was the favourite of the two as it was more meaty. It has nice Korean BBQ flavours marinated throughout. The bulgogi wasn’t as plentiful as it was mixed with onions.

Nonetheless, we still enjoyed the fun concept of the lunch boxes as there is so many different tastes and textures in the side dishes. The soup that accompanied it was seaweed soup, but it does change.

Kosoo Gugsu

This is noodle in broth with a slight kick of spice. There are a lot of noodles in this big bowl, as well as veggies, minced meat and seaweed. We did feel like the noodles were a bit on the soft side and we of preferred it a bit firmer. Nonetheless, if you are really hungry, this dish will fill you up.

You can also turn this in to a combo by adding a side of BBQ for a few extra dollars

Jjangppong Sundubu

If you love spicy noodes, then the Jjangppong Sundubu might be for you. We did ask for less spicy, but it was still very spicy. The portions are huge and it came with a huge fried fish in it. Do not that the fish does have bones, so it’s a bit hard to eat.

BBQ Combo

There are a few BBQ combo options you can add to your noodles:

  • Chicken
  • Pork
  • LA Galbi

Definitely tender and full of flavour from the different marinades. A good addition to the noodles.

Chicken BBQ
Pork Combo

Final Thoughts

Glad that the Fall is here since it’s the best time for soupy noodles and BBQ meats. If you’re at Kosoo, definitely check out this fall menu in addition to their regular items.

Milksha 迷客夏, a popular Taiwanese brand of Bubble Tea is opening their doors in Downtown Vancouver on Robson Street. This is their first location in North America. They currently have over 250 locations in Taiwan as well as other locations around the world.

They are known for the taste of their drinks by using high quality ingredients like fresh tea, Dajia Taro, and honey white pearls. A lot of their ingredients are frozen and flown from Taiwan to maintain their quality.

Milksha is known to use 100% fresh natural milk, no preservatives, chemical ingredients or artificial colourings.

Honey White Pearls

They are planning their soft opening on October 26-27, 2019 at 2pm with a few promos:

  • First 50 Customers – Get 1 FREE Drink
  • 51-150 Customers – Buy 1 Get 1 Free
  • After 151 Customers – Get 20% off

We were invited for a sneak peek of Milksha and try their signature drinks.

Menu

Dajia Taro Fresh Milk

This was really good upon the first few sips. It was an instant hit. It’s best cold of course and the milk and sweet taro tasted pretty darn fresh. There is no sugar added which is surprising as the taro is naturally sweet. It’s not gritty at all, but the drink does get sweeter and sweeter as you drink it.

Earl Black Tea Latte

It was delicious. A solid milk tea and we enjoyed it with the honey white pearls. We would suggest getting it 30% sweet if you’re adding the pearls. If no pearls, 50% sweetness is good.

You get the deep aroma of the earl black tea to go with the rich milk and sweetness of the pearls.

Orange Green Tea

This was a very refreshing drink. We haven’t found this anywhere else. It’s made with Liu Ding, which is a smaller orange from Taiwan. It has a zesty aftertaste which was nice. The base of the drink has pulp, which give it a nicer taste and texture. We would recommend 30% sweetness with pearls and 50% sweetness without pearls.

Izumi Matcha Fresh Milk

They get matcha powder from Japan for this drink. It has a good amount of matcha, smooth and not gritty unlike some other ones out there. If you like matcha, you’ll enjoy this.

Valrhona Cocoa Fresh Milk

Valrona is a great chocolate brand from France and it even makes a great rich chocolate milk. The drink isn’t too thick and great for chocolate lovers.

Wintermelon Fresh Milk

We tried a sample of this and it tasted like sweet milk, which was surprising to us. It was a little bit on the sweet side for us, so in the future, we would get it less sweet. It’s nice that they have wintermelon on the menu combined with milk.

Brown Sugar Fresh Milk

Their brown sugar milk is a bit different than others. Instead of pouring milk over brown sugar, they mix the brown sugar into the milk so ti is all combined. It’s a good drink option if you like brown sugar. We didn’t find it was too special, but its a nice option.

Final Thoughts

How many more bubble tea shops does Vancouver need? Apparently more and that’s ok. It gives customers more options and I love the new surge of bubble tea shops focus on quality ingredients. It’s really makes a big difference on taste.

The drinks that we featured are pretty solid and we did enjoy it but we would get it less sweet at 30% or 50% sweetness.

J&G Fried Chicken has opened their second location in Western Canada on Robson Street. The other location is at Crystal Mall in Burnaby. The very first J&G Fried Chicken location opened in Taiwan in 1973 serving up fried chicken on the street and is now a chain across Asia and now in North America.

I love fried chicken and it’s one of the items I crave besides bubble tea. When we were invited to check out J&G Fried Chicken on Robson Street, I knew we had to try a bit of everything.

Interior

The space is pretty small, so there isn’t a lot of room to eat. Most tables fit groups of 2’s, so if you’re coming in a large group, you’ll be out of luck.

As most items on the menu is more like a snack, a lot of people people get it to go.

Menu

Signature Popcorn Chicken

They keep the recipe relatively similar as in Taiwan with the use of boneless and skinless chicken breast. The breast still is juicy, has delicious spices in the batter but could have been more crispy.

Chicken Wings

The chicken wings is skewered and its more elongated. Wings are always a bit annoying to eat as there are bones. It’ll still get a bit messy with the skewer.

Squid Balls

The squid balls were really good with a big piece of squid in the centre. I would definitely get this again as it has some good spices and crunch on the outside.

Shrimp

The shrimp is coated in batter and then seasoned. These were ok, but I still prefer those squid balls if I had to choose between the seafood items.

Mixed Pieces of Chicken

If you need a lot more chicken, you can get 3 or 6 pieces of mixed chicken. It is fried till golden brown and comes out piping hot.

Heart Shaped Cutlet

If you ever wanted a deep-fried heart shaped cutlet, they’ve got that too. It’s a breast that is filleted into a shape of a heart. Surprisingly juicy and I enjoyed the spices on it. You can be a savage and eat the heart shaped cutlet with your hands or use a knife and fork. Anything goes.

Broccoli

There are veggies in the menu! It is deep fried, so you get the bits of the batter and then the chew of the broccoli. A nice accompaniment to go with chicken.

Deep Fried Cheeza – Tomato and Cheese

This has deep fried chicken on the bottom and then topped with a sweet tomato sauce and cheese. The chicken uses skinless and boneless chicken breast.

The concept of this reminds me of something I would make as a kid. I oddly really liked this. It’s so cheesy!

Deep Fried Cheeza – Okonomiyaki

This is another version with cheese and okonomikyaki toppings – Okonomiyaki sauce, mayo, green onion and dried bonito flakes. Not my personal favourite flavour.

Deep Fried Buns

The deep fried buns come with condensed milk on the side and its always a good pairing.

Final Thoughts

All these items you’ll want to eat soon after it’s served to retain it’s crispiness and juiciness. Once it cools down, it’s not as good. The batter is thin and you get lots of meaty chicken. It is higher in price than in Taiwan, but it makes sense given that chicken is getting more expensive, and also the area too.

I am a fan of dark meat, so when asked about the use of white meat in most items, they said they use white meat to keep with the same recipes as Taiwan for consistency.

If you’re looking for some Taiwanese Fried Chicken on Robson Street, it’s here.

Blossom Dim Sum & Grill has come up with their Fall and Winter Menu for 2019. We were excited to check this out to see what else they have been crafting up to meld the East and West flavours.

The lunch menu is more reflective of the East, which dinner is West. We were invited to get a taste of these new dishes.

Quinoa Salad

This was a vibrant dish and a good light and healthy dish to start off the meal. This also has roasted beets, kale, mango, avocado, spicy pumpkin seeds, and grilled lemon vinaigrette.

This dish does definitely represent the East with the use of beets, kale, avocado, and quinoa.

Char Siu Octopus Salad

This was one of our favourite dishes. On the place is also fried rice, kale salad, yuzu and katsu Salad.

The Char Siu Octopus salad had a depth of flavour and was tender. The kale salad on top adds a nice element to the dish.

Albacore Tuna Crudo

Do note, the image pictured is of a smaller portion and does not represent a normal serving size. The crudo is paired with ponzu, sesame oil, pickled daikon, and avocado.

The flavours are fresh and the ponzu sauce pairs really well with the Albacore tuna crudo.

Sushi Ball

There are 5 sushi balls in an order. There are the flavours:

  • Sockeye Salmon
  • BBQ Eel
  • Crab Meat
  • Kimchi Cucumber
  • Avocado

This has more of a fusion dish and not authentic, it’s more fusion in a sense. The rice could have been a bit better with more vinegar and less hard.

Risotto Lotus Wrap

This was an interesting dish to see risotto in a lotus wrap when it’s usually sticky rice. There is also Chantelle mushroom and chicken in the filling.

The mushroom definitely stands out and was delicious. The butter and cream from the risotto was balanced by the essence of the lotus leaves.

Sui Mai Ravioli

This is paired with a soft egg yolk, minced pork, prawn, wild boar bacon, and a arugula tomato salad. There is also a parmesan crisp on top too for added texture.

It was a really good dish as the flavours meld really well together with excellent textures.

West Lake Style Sweet & Sour Steelhead

The steelhead also comes with a carrot and ginger puree, and wok fried baby Bok Choy. The sweet and sour glaze wasn’t very prominent, but more subtle.

Canadian Prime Beef Short Rib

This is made with Root beer to give it a sweeter taste and balanced with bourbon. It is served with Asian coleslaw and kimchi.

You have a bit of sweetness, saltiness, and a hint of spice to balance the dish out. The short ribs were also very tender. One of our other favourite dishes.

Wok Fried Assorted Vegetable

There is broccoli, black fungus, carrot, lotus root, and lily bulb in this medley. A good dish to balance out the other meaty dishes.

Mango Pomelo Soup Cheesecake

The base is a lemon cheesecake that is more frozen and hard. On top is the mango pomelo soup the falls down one the plastic film is lifted.

The mango pomelo soup is delicious, but would have live the cheesecake to be a bit softer or be a spongecake instead.

Final Thoughts

The menu does have some hits and misses and is truly East meet West, but more on the East for lunch. They serve items that you wouldn’t normally find anywhere else.

Our favourite items that we tried were the Canadian Prime Beef Short Rib, Sui Mai Ravioli, and Char Siu Octopus Salad.

Robba da Matti recently opened a second location on the West End. It’s attached to the Buchan Hotel, located one block from Denman Street. The new location is much larger, with an elegant decor and an amazing patio.

I’m a fan of Robba da Matti Yaletown, so I was very excited to visit this location and came with high expectations.

The new spot elevates the experience even further. The street is lined with trees and as you get closer you can hear the din from patrons dining on the patio. Once through the door, you’re welcomed with glamorous warm decor and friendly staff.

Interior

The space is warm and welcoming. It feels as if all design and decor details were meticulously chosen. Rich warm colours and plush cushions adorn the interior.

Date Night Menu

We came for their Date Night Menu which lets you choose 2 antipasti, 2 fresh pastas and 2 desserts, plus a bottle of wine. It’s an amazing deal and is perfect for a date, a special occasion or a catch-up session with your favourite friend.

The dinner begins with your choice of ice or sparkling water. Kalamata olives in herbs and olive oil is served as you get your first sip of wine.

Antipasti: Burrata caprese and Mozzarella di bufala fritta

Robba da Matti take pride in their authentic Italian food. They offer fresh cheese and tomatoes, so we ordered it two ways.

Mozzarella di bufala fritta is bocconcini breaded and deep fried. If you’ve only ever had “mozza sticks” please try this to instantly feel as if you’ve been missing out on the real thing…until the very moment you savoured this dish.

Burrata caprese has fresh roma tomatoes and burrata mozzarella drizzled with basil infused olive oil from Puglia, Italy. The burrata had the perfect texture––it was solid enough to nibble, but was readily spreadable onto the bread.

Pasta: Spaghetti allo scoglio and Risotto alla pescatora

Spaghetti allo scoglio (spaghetti from the coastline) is a Venetian dish featuring fresh spaghetti tossed in chili and cherry tomatoes, then served with seafood including scallops, mussels, clams, tiger prawns and calamari. The pasta was perfectly cooked. Each bite was full of flavour and seafood.

Risotto alla pescatora (seafood risotto) is arborio rice with tiny scallops, calamari, tiger prawns, local mussels and clams. The risotto is creamy, the broth is full of flavour and they did not skimp on the seafood. It paired well with the Tolloy Pinot Grigio.

Dolci: Tiramisu and Chocolate mousse

I truly loved the chocolate mousse and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have it again.

The tiramisu is delightful and perfectly layered.

(Side note: I wondered if there’s a “proper” way to eat a tiramisu. Am I supposed to eat it from the top down? Surely not. Or should each bite maintain the layers? Maybe the layers are for show and I’m expected to mix the ingredients? Honestly, someone please let me know!)

The Bar

The main difference between this and their original Yaletown location is the dedicated bar area and bartender.

After the meal, we visited the bar and chatted with Yaver. He’s been a bartender for over 22 years, and spent most of it in jazz clubs in Istanbul. He believes good drinks and good music can elevate any dining experience.

Ending a meal with digestifs feels like a treat. I was intrigued to learn that Robba da Matti offers in-house infused digestifs in their West End location. The limoncello was tasty!

Perhaps having witnessed me devour the chocolate mousse, he suggested that I try the Nutella martini. I insisted on just having a sip…and it was so enjoyable that I have to come back again and get a full serving.

Final Thoughts

Robba da Matti West End maintains the same great taste and service as their Yaletown location. Their date night menu continues to be a great deal for authentic Italian food. Their beautiful patio, surrounded by greenery and nestled in the residential area of the West End, is this summer’s new best kept secret.

Blossom Dim Sum & Grill is Robson Street’s newest social hub and a gathering spot for a sit-down meal or some small bites and drinks on the patio.

They just launched their happy hour menu, which happens everyday at 3-5pm and 10pm to midnight.

We were invited to give their happy hour menu a try.

Interior

This space is huge and they have done wonders decorating this place from head to toe. You can have small to really large groups at Blossom.

The decor is very fun and Asian inspired.

They have more casual dining by the sushi bar, patio, dining room & a private room as well.

White Sangria

On the happy hour menu is also their sangria. It’s perfect for the Summer weather.

Vegetable Spring Roll

There are 6 pieces per order (3 cut into halves). Crisp on the outside and savoury on the inside. For $3.50, it’s a pretty good price.

Pork Dumping , Napa Cabbage

There are 3 pieces per order. These are very big dumplings using fresh ingredients. When you bite into them, there is some juice inside but doesn’t leak.

Olives

An ingredient you don’t normally find in Chinese cooking. It comes in a variety of Italian and Spanish Olives. It’s served warm in olive oil.

Edamame

These are steamed soy beans tossed in smoked salt. It’s good to nibble on throughout the meal.

Potato Chips

The potato chops are house fried with spicy Asian ketchup. These were like rotato you would find at the night market but in chip format. Pretty good deal for $3.50 on the happy hour menu.

Crispy Prawn Dumplings

There are 3 pieces to an order and it came with a dip too. A good texture of the deep-fried dumpling skin and the delicious salty prawn meat inside.

Crispy California Roll

The California roll has crab meat and avocado inside the deep fried rice roll. Delicious and great to share with a group.

Spicy Albacore Tuna Tartare

There is wasabi soy, avocado, mixed greens, serreno, and Sichuan spicy mayo. It was delicious and it had a kick of wasabi that travels up the nose.

Lotus Korean Spicy Tuna

This dish may not look like much but the lotus chip wrap with the spicy Korean sauce was really delicious. Not too spicy and was one of our favourite dishes.

Fish Pate

The fish pate is served with rice crackers. It was very interesting to see it this way as it reminded us of a crab dip.

Smoked Salmon

This is house smoked and served with creme fraiche, capers, chilli oil and baguette. Together the items worked together to make a 2 bite treat.

The texture of the smoked salmon is a bit different and chunky.

Beef Tartare

This is made of hand cut tenderloin, mustard and herbs. It is then served with potato chips. This was decent.

Lobster Leg Fries

Now that’s something I haven’t heard of before but it makes sense! You get a good amount for only $6.50.

Final Thoughts

The happy hour menu is truly East meets West. You have a lot of fusion dishes that you would not normally see. We enjoyed the lobster fries, potato chips, crispy California roll, and lotus Korean spicy tuna.

If you want to get a taste of what Blossom has to offer, check out Happy Hour as its very affordable. They also don’t use MSG in all dishes. Items are between $3.5 and $6.5. The dishes are meant to be shared, which is great for groups.

With their beautiful interior, its good to grab a drink and some nibbles to catch up with friends.

Koyuki Sapporo Ramen is located in Downtown Vancouver on Jervis and Robson Street. They specialize in Miso ramen which was originally from Sapporo city in Hokkaido.

We were invite to try a variety of items off the menu from ramen, dons, and their appetizers.

Interior

There are a decent amount of seating inside for groups of 2’s and 4’s

Menu

Ebi Mayo

A classic Japanese tapas dish. Each prawn is battered and deep-fried, topped with sauce and a slice of lemon on the side. This all sits above a bed of greens. The sweet and sour sauce was more prominent as we didn’t sense any mayo in the dish. It was decent.

Tonkatsu Don Set

This is the most popular don on the menu and was recommended by the staff. The don comes with pickled radish and miso soup on the side.

The tonkatsu don was decent but we did feel the tonkatsu ended up to be mushy and soggy with the cooked egg. Would have been nice to have it separate so we can feel the crisp texture of the panko breading.

Milky Chicken Ramen

For our ramen, we asked one of the staff for her recommendation and her favourite was the milky chicken ramen, so we decided to give it a try. The broth was light and not too rich. We customized our ramen with thin firm noodles. Then added egg and seaweed as well. It was pretty good overall.

Seafood Tomato Risotto

They definitely have a lot of fusion type of dishes on the menu. The base of the sauce had a tad of spice and more of a sour ketchup flavour profile. The seafood sitting on top of the risotto didn’t feel very incorporated into the dish at all. It was so-so.

Final Thoughts

Overall, dishes we tried were decent but nothing really stood out. Given the neighbourhood, there’s really tough competition. As it is off Robson, it’s not as busy, so you’re guaranteed a spot without a long line up. We felt it was more like a spot to have a quick bite of tapas with beer. Their menu is pretty big, so there are lots of diverse options.

Ramen Koika has launched their limited time-only Prime Rib Ramen as their special for the next few months. They are anticipating this will stay on the menu for another 2-3 months as it’s been quite popular.

We were invited to try the prime rib ramen out for dinner.

Prime Rib Ramen

The prime rib ramen is $15.95 and it comes with a piece of AAA Prime Rib, onion, cabbage, wood ear mushroom, bean sprouts, and tonkotsu soup base with triple black garlic oil.

You can get the broth non-spicy, mild, or spicy. If you want more meat, you can add another piece of prime rib for $4.95.

I went with spicy tonkotsu broth for mine and you can definitely tell its spicy with all those red peppers. Spicy has a good amount of spice for me but it does build up over time.

My husband got mild and it also had a hint of spice which wasn’t bad at all either.

They give you a plastic glove to handle your prime rib if you want to use your hands to devour this big bone. The meat is very tender and full of flavour. Definitely the best part of the meal.

If you love meat and have a big appetite, I would suggest getting 2 ribs instead of 1.

We both got our noodles to be cooked more firm so it has more texture and chew.

Final Thoughts

The prime rib ramen isn’t a traditional ramen but it is Koika’s twist on ramen. It has more of a Korean taste profile to the ramen rather than Japanese especially with the spices used. Good to see some diversity in Vancouver’s ramen scene.

Your next favourite ramen might be from a food court.

It’s a bold claim, I know. Vancouver loves ramen and throughout the years, there had been a trend of using heavy broth full of flavour. It’s absolutely delicious but they leave you reaching for water hours after your meal.

Hida Takayama Ramen sets itself apart by offering a lighter broth with the same depth of flavour achieved by their special mix of dashi and broth.

A Hidden Gem

Hida Takayama Ramen is a hidden gem inside the Robson Public Market food court. Its original owner wanted to retire and two of its loyal customers stepped up to take over. Reg and Ping are owner operators of Yui Japanese Bistro, and they now also own Hida Takayama Ramen.

They kept the old recipes, but have made improvements to the taste and prep procedures to ensure a consistent experience. The previous owner continues to be their supplier for noodles and gyoza.

Menu

Reg believes that ramen “shouldn’t be too expensive” and although you’re getting restaurant quality food, the menu is inline with food court pricing.

The broth is gently simmered for three days, the thin noodles continue to be made by the original owner, and the chashu is made with premium kurobuta pork. They make and prep their ingredients from scratch.

In the media preview, we tried the Original White Sesame, Traditional Hida Chuka, Basic Spicy Miso and Tantanmen White Sesame. We also tried the gyoza.

Original White Sesame

Hida sesame broth, chashu, white sesame, bamboo shoot, green onion.

Basic Spicy Miso

Hida signature broth, chashu, seaweed, bamboo shoots and green onion. This was my favourite!

Traditional Hida Chuka

Clear chicken dashi broth, chashu, bamboo shoot, green onion and seaweed. The broth looks simple, but there are layers of umami and salt that makes this special.

Tantanmen White Sesame

Hida signature broth, spicy ground pork, pickled ginger, ginger onion and black fungus. It’s good, it’s rich and the topping is so flavourful.

Gyoza

Hida Takayama’s gyoza is made with premium kurobuta pork and is still supplied by the original owner. They’re a great side to the ramen, but I would love it more if it had better texture with a crispy bottom.

Final Thoughts

Hida Takayama Ramen is a great addition to the Vancouver ramen scene. Its new owners have improved the taste and consistency, but kept the style of its original humble beginnings.

The noodles have a great bite and goes with all of the broth options available. Their egg is perfectly cooked, so go ahead and add a side of egg with your order.

We completely overlooked it when we visited, so learn from our mistake and take advantage of the free parking for patrons in the basement of Robson Public Market.

Rad on Denman serves up Taiwanese dishes from individual hot pots, rice and noodle dishes, and bubble tea. You may know them from their first cafe inside Granville Skytrain Station serving up delicious bubble tea. With this Denman location, you can still get their bubble tea, but there is a wider offering of dishes.

I came here with a few friends to check it out to see how it compares to other Taiwanese cafes and hot pot restaurants around town.

Interior

It wasn’t very busy on a weekday night and on all the tables, you can see the hot pot equipment on the tables. Most people come here for that. We also noticed a decent amount of takeout orders too.

Menu

Taiwanese Hot Pot

You essentially build your own hot pot by selection your broth, protein, any extra toppings, sides and sauce.

Some of the bone broth flavours are:

  • Clear chicken broth
  • Tonkotsu
  • Sukiyaki
  • Kimchi
  • Thai
  • Satay
  • Spicy

You can choose your choice of protein:

  • Alberta Beef
  • Premium Lamb
  • Pork
  • Chicken
  • Shrimp

All hot pots come with free rice, but I upgraded to glass noodles for $2.50 extra. They give you a very generous portion.

My friends and I got Satay, sukiyaki and Tonkotsu for our bone broths. All of them were good and not too salty. Price was good for what you get.

There’s only a few places around town that do individual hot pots, but in the Denman area, there aren’t other options. They light the pot from underneath so it reminds me of another hot pot restaurant with a similar concept

Roasted Oolong Bubble Milk Tea

You get a free drink with your hot pot but you can add $2.99 to upgrade it to a bubble tea. I went with the Roasted Oolong Bubble Milk Tea and got it less sweet. It’s normally not very sweet to begin with, so getting it less sweet barely has any sweetness at all. Just a personal preference, but I know some people are thrown off by it.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the food was good but the service was very subpar. Even though the restaurant was pretty much empty, getting the staff’s attention was hard and when we asked for more sauce for our hot pots, it was forgotten. It would have been good if they checked up on us to see if we needed anything else.

The Sauce Pasta Cafe is located on Denman Street in the West End. They recently opened up serving up pasta on the go as of December 1, 2018. This is their first location offering up customers high end gourmet Italian pasta, great prices, and the convenience of take out seven days a week.

They have also partnered up Foodora and Skip the Dishes as delivery options if you don’t want to venture out.

Interior

There are a few bar seats inside, but it’s mostly designed for take out. You order right up at the counter where you can choose your sauce and pasta.

Menu

Building your Pasta

You can choose these types of pasta:

  • Penne
  • Fettuccine
  • Gnocchi
  • Gemelli
  • Rigatoni
  • Spaghetti
  • Pappardelle
  • 4 Cheese Ravioli

Of these, 3 of these are fresh – fettuccine, gemelli and pappardelle.

You can then pick your sauce:

  • Marinara
  • Arrabiata
  • Alfredo
  • Creamy Mushroom
  • Rose
  • Nonna’s
  • Vodka Cream
  • Pesto
  • Daily special

Did you know, most of the sauces are made in-house everyday and they try to use simple ingredients that are preservative-free as much as possible? All the sauces are made with love and real ingredients.

Don’t forget the add ons!

  • Add mushrooms, peas and spinach to your order for free
  • Meatballs/chicken is extra $1.50

Special Braised Beef Shank with Spinach over Pappardelle

This was delicious! The pappardelle had a nice chew to the pasta that’s al dente. One of our favourite dishes of the night.

If you see this special again, it’s defintiely worth it.

Gnocchi with Vodka Cream Sauce

The gnocchi is very light and fluffy in texture. As for vodka cream sauce, it has a sour and refreshing taste, which doesn’t feel too heavy. There is a slight bitter taste but not too noticeable. We just like the sour/tomato-creamy combination.

The box wasn’t as full as the other dishes we had.

Fresh Fetuccine with Nonna’s Meat Sauce

The box was packed to the top! Nonna’s Meat Sauce is the most popular and its marinara sauce is made in 3 different ways – part baked, part simmered, and part fresh tomatoes added in.

The fettuccine could have been more al dente as we felt it was a bit soft. If you feel like the sauce is a bit thin, you can ask them to put in a bit more so your pasta is bathing in the delicious sauce.

Focaccia Bread

A good size of focaccia bread, but we wished it was served warm to go with the pasta.

Final Thoughts

I can see this doing well in the Summer as some may want a quick meal to take with them to English Bay or the different beaches to eat, plus the prices are affordable. You can choose to have it in a paper or plastic container depending on your preference.
