Matsuzushi is a hidden gem in Port Moody serving up $25 Omakase, which is a Japanese term meaning “I’ll leave it up to you”. I was intrigued by a lot of people posting up pictures of this great deal, so I decided to take a few of my friends to check out Matsuzushi. There is lots of parking outside on the street and around the corner.

Interior

There are about 5 tables inside and bar seating as well. It is best to make reservations just in case they are busy for that particular day. The best experience is by the bar where you can see the meal being prepped right in front of you and also you get more attentive service.

The restaurant is a 2 person operation, so service does suffer because of it. It literally is a mom and pop shop. I don’t mind inattentive service as long as there is good value for what you pay for. Others can get bothered by the service.

Menu

$25 Omakase

For $25 per person, you get 11 nigiri, 1 temaki cone and a miso soup. As there were 4 of us, they put all the items in a box to share. As we were not sitting by the bar, we were not told which nigiri was which. We had to rely on our fish detection skills to figure out what was what. Good thing all of us are sushi lovers, so it wasn’t a problem at all.

Our favourite of the night (not because we could identify them) were, toro, uni, tuna, salmon, and Tai.

Final Thoughts

Overall, solid omakase for only $25 and most people who come here order this set. We were all full by the end of the meal and didn’t have to order anything else.

Gabi & Jules is a bakery in Port Moody for pies, pastries and coffee. I love the concept of the cafe as they are huge supporters of the local community and provide employment opportunities to individuals on the Autism Spectrum. As their eldest daughter has autism, they really wanted to become advocates of the autism community and show how capable their team is with all their abilities rather than disabilities.

Interior

The interior is nice and cozy with a lot of natural light that comes from the front of the shop. A lot of the tables are set up in 2’s and 4’s but if you go early, you can probably combine the tables together for larger groups.

The pastries is where you will be drawn towards. A lots of different items to choose from and I had a hard time deciding.

They also sell a few things beside pies, pastries and coffee.

Gibraltar

This not so common coffee style has 2 shots of espresso with some steamed milk. It is served with a puff pastry cookie. I enjoyed this as it is stronger and has less milk than a cappuccino or latte.

Cappuccino

My friend ordered the latte and looked good.

Herbed Ricotta and Semi-Dried Tomato Crostata

This was delicious as it was warmed up. The crust was flakey and the tomato and ricotta worked well together for a savoury pastry treat.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

This is good paired with coffee or tea. It’s not too sweet and is a pretty sizeable portion.

Final Thoughts

I like this cute space and a good start to the morning by coming here. I love what they stand for and I’m glad I’m supporting them fight the stigma of dis’abilities’.

My friend Hilda told me about Original’s Café Mexicano on Clarke Street in Port Moody in this heritage house. I had no idea it was in such a cute place. We came here after work on a weekday and it was busy here later in the evening. They also take reservations, so if you have a large group to secure your table, definitely do that.

Interior

The space is literally in a house, so it has a very cozy friendly feel just like entering someone’s home.

Menu

Guacamole and Chips

We started the meal with guacamole and chips. The tortilla chips are made fresh and fried to a beautiful golden brown. The guacamole is is so damn good. There is a good amount of acidity and I like how it is topped with some diced tomatoes. Really good flavour.

Prawn Ceviche

This was their feature ceviche when we went. It changes, so ask them what kind it is as it may be different.  The prawns are cured in lime and served with guacamole, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and avocado. It was really fresh.

Enchiladas de Mole

Their special mole has nuts, chocolate, a bunch of different dried peppers and spices. We chose to have chicken on the inside, but you can ask for different proteins or veggies too. The mole has depth of flavour and it was very tasty.

Los Tacos

They have tacos on the menu and we can’t say no to tacos. We ordered the:

  • Baja Style Taco: breaded white basa with chipotle mayo, lettuce and avocado.
  • Carnitas: slow cooked fried pork with hints of cinnamon and orange.
  • Chilorio: Slow cooked pulled porl in ancho and huajillo pepper.

On the table, there are also different kinds of hot sauce you can add.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was a great find in Port Moody. The food is great and there is nice atmosphere in the heritage house, makes you feel right at home. As the weather is getting hotter, there is some outdoor patio seating too.

pomo-rib-fest-17

The Port Moody Rib Fest is back this year at Rocky Point Park. For rib lovers, this event can’t be missed. It is a 3 day event with delicious BBQ, live music, craft breweries in the beer garden and fun family activities. Free admission too. It is put on every year by the Rotary Club of Port Moody.

This place was packed, so parking is a bit hard, so we parked a few blocks away so we didn’t have to fight over parking.

pomo-rib-fest-16

There are 5 ribbers as part of the Rib Fest:

  • Gator BBQ
  • Boss Hog’s
  • Smoke & Bones
  • Prairie Smoke & Spice
  • Misty Mountain BBQ

All 5 are award-winning BBQ masters that have won multiple awards.

pomo-rib-fest-1

You can eat sitting on the grass or there are a few tents with seats. It was pretty sunny on Saturday, so a lot of people were huddled underneath.

pomo-rib-fest-2

The line ups were a bit long at the stalls, so we decided to order our food and beer in the beer garden, so they would deliver it to us when it is done.

pomo-rib-fest-3

You line up in the beer garden, put in your order, and pay.

They will take your phone number and will text you when your order is ready. We waited about 20 minutes, but we were busy playing Pokemon Go to pass the time as there were 2 lures close by.

pomo-rib-fest-4

The 3 of us ordered $65 worth of BBQ and sides. We wanted to try a little bit of everything.

pomo-rib-fest-11

We got a variety of different items:

  • Boss Hogs 1/2 beef ribs
  • Boss Hogs Coleslaw
  • Gator BBQ 1/2 Chicken
  • Gator BBQ Tators
  • Smoke and Bones 1/2 Pork Ribs
  • Smoke and Bones Coleslaw
  • Smoke and Bones Baked Beans
  • Corn Bread

Boss Hogs

pomo-rib-fest-7

We got the 1/2 beef ribs with coleslaw from Boss Hogs. Very large ribs and super delicious.

Gator BBQ

pomo-rib-fest-9

The half chicken was ok. The skin was delicious because of all the spices and flavour are located there. Certain parts of the chicken were dry, but could have been better.

The cornbread wasn’t from Gators, but it was so good. You need to get the cornbread.

pomo-rib-fest-8

The Gator Tators is basically mashed potatoes. In my mind, I thought it would be tator tots. Still delicious nonetheless.

We also realized they threw in a half rack of pork ribs, they must of misread our order, but we dug in anyways. The pork ribs were really meaty and super enjoyable.

Smoke and Bones

pomo-rib-fest-10

1/2 Pork RibsColeslaw, and Baked Beans from Smoke and Bones had very good flavours. Not has meaty as the Pork Ribs from Gators, but still had a good smokey flavour.

Ordering beer

pomo-rib-fest-14

You need to purchase tokens and the get your beer. Craft beer is $5.50 and wine is $7. All the beer available are from the Port Moody Breweries across the street – Moody Ales, Twin Sails, Yellow Dog and Parkside.

pomo-rib-fest-5

Seat in Beer Garden

pomo-rib-fest-12

There is tons of seating and definitely nothing to worry about in the beer garden.

Overall

pomo-rib-fest-15

The Port Moody Rib Fest is always a treat to go to, but it can be very busy. Some people had to wait over an hour to get their food. We came at 1pm and the lines were not as crazy yet. Like any festival, there are going to be waits, but you just need to be prepared. For us, Pokemon Go helped us pass the time. hahaha.

I really enjoyed hanging out with my foodie friends seating BBQ and drinking beer. I would go again.

moody-ales-1

Moody Ales is another craft brewery in Port Moody. Just a few minutes away is Yellow Dog Brewing and Twin Sails Brewery. What is unique about Moody Ales is that they have picnic table seating out front along with some inside seating. Very family friendly as well.

moody-ales-4

It was a busy sunny Sunday and whats better than relaxing with a few beers. When we were here, Mr Arancino Food truck was here. Since Moody Ales doesn’t serve their own food, they rely on food truck to feed the hungry crowds.

moody-ales-2

I went with the flight, which gives you 4 choices of beer.

  • Intrepid Matcha Saison
  • Chipper Blonde Ale
  • Sociable Pale Ale
  • Affable IPA

I really enjoyed the Intrepid Match Saison. It’s a season offering and I enjoyed the crisp and earth taste of it. This was the only one I really remember drinking since at this point, my friends and I were all pretty drunk.

moody-ales-3

You can even walk through their processing area to see how all that beer is made. It’s pretty neat being able to sit so close to where it’s brewed.

twin-sails-1

Twin Sails Brewing is a craft brewery in Port Moody. A few of my foodie friends decided to come for a visit and explore the craft brewery scene in this area. It’s very family-friendly and across from Rocky Point, so on a nice sunny day, it’s great to get a few beers in you, then head to the park to relax.

twin-sails-2

They open early till late into the evening. We came in the late afternoon and this place was packed.

twin-sails-3

All the tables were occupied and a bit of a line up to order beer. You can order pints, flights or even growlers. Their food options are limited but you can grab some small things like pepperoni sticks and baked goods. If you’re here on good day, there might be a food truck parked out front.

twin-sails-4

I went with the flights, which include 3 beers of  your choice. I went with:

  • Pilsner
  • Hefeweizen
  • Munich Dunkel

The last slot is for water to cleanse your palette for the next beer.

Pilsner is a pale golden lager with a light body and clean finish. I find that this has quite a hoppy taste to it.

Hefeweizen is a Bavarian-style wheat beer and is medium bodied with subtle notes of fruit and a moderate spiciness from both the yeast and hops.

Munich Dunkel is a full-bodied mahogany lager with a rich malt flavour and crisp finish. You will find notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee.

twin-sails-5

The flow of people into Twin Sails was pretty constant. If you can’t find a seat, you can just perch outside and have your drink.

twin-sails-7

On the other side of the room is their processing area where all the beer is made. Whats awesome about these breweries is that you can see how it’s made and where it comes from.

yellow-dog-brewing-7

Yellow Dog Brewing Co is a craft brewery located in Port Moody. This family-run brewery focuses on producing high quality locally crafted beer for everyone to enjoy. On a nice sunny day, you’ll see a lot of people handing out here with friends and even the whole family. You saw a lot of dogs and kids running around, which is great for parents that need a little break to enjoy a brew, but still have their kids at an arms length. Of course the kids can enjoy some root beer. I came here with a few foodie friends to see and taste all the cool breweries in this area.

yellow-dog-brewing-3

You can stop to fill up a growler, have a flight or enjoy your favourite beer in a 12 oz or 28 oz glass.

yellow-dog-brewing-2

we grabbed our drinks a decided to have a set right in front of their huge processing machines.

yellow-dog-brewing-4

The beer flights are a good option if you want to try a variety of beers by having a little taste of each.

  • Take a Walk Wit
  • Sit and Stay ISBA
  • Go Fetch Saison
  • Play Dead IPA

All of them were really good and not too hoppy. Of all of them, my favourite was the Take a Walk Wit which has a light and citrus finish. Definitely great for a hot summers day.

yellow-dog-brewing-5

I really enjoyed the beers and I found a few that I really enjoyed.

yellow-dog-brewing-6

If you want to go outside, they have a bunch of picnic tables in the back.

menchies-outer

After a hike with the girls and M, we grabbed dinner and then headed off to Menchie’s frozen yogurt in Port Moody for a nice treat to end the day. I like the Port Moody location since it’s fairly new and the space is pretty large compared to the other locations in the Lower Mainland.

Menchie’s currently have 116 locations across Canada and are planning to have another 9 by the end of the year.

menchies-inner

You grab a cup and stop at the yogurt bar to start trying all the different flavours until you can figure out what you want.

menchies-machine

There’s a lot of choices especially for the chocolate lover. I normally go for their original tart flavour, but today, I had to try something new. Their newest flavour is Oreo. They have just over 150 flavours available but the flavours do rotate.

menchies-toppings

Time to add all the topping. I find that the fruit topping is quite scarce, so there isn’t a lot of fruity selection, but they have tons of chocolates and candies to add on top.

menchies-pay

You pay by weight, so the more you put in, the more it will cost.

menchies-seats

Then you can sit and enjoy your Menchie’s creation. It was a hot summer day, so everyone else decide to sit outside to enjoy their froyo. We didn’t mind since there was AC in here.

menchies-strawberry-cheesecake

Original Tart Flavour with cheese cake bites, cookie dough, and popping bubbles. M calls this his Strawberry cheesecake creation.

menchies-made

Oreo Cookie Flavour frozen yogurt in a waffle cone with mini peanut butter cups, Reese’s peanut butter cups crumble, and colourful chocolate bits.

menchies-oreo

I really pilled it on, but sometimes you gotta indulge. I found that it did lack a bit of the signature Oreo flavour in the frozen yogurt. It was more like a cookies and cream. Perhaps I should I put crushed Oreos on top to add more of that flavour.

Overall, Menchie’s has a great space especially this location for seats, but I always get sad at the lack of fresh fruit toppings.

If you are from the Port Moody area, you must know Lazy Den Bubble Tea. I vaguely remember coming here in 2008 during my early University days cause it was open pretty late. Where else can you get bubble tea in Coquitlam/North Burnaby at 11pm? Sure, there are tons of places in South Burnaby, but thats quite a bit of a drive. I’m not a huge bubble tea fan, so I didn’t come back till now.

We came back here again because some friends told us they have good cheap food at night. All I heard was food, so I was happy to come here. I was really hungry during this day.

Lazy Den Bubble Tea

The interior isn’t pretty, but it’s a good place to chat and chill with friends over bubble tea till midnight.

Lazy Den Bubble Tea

On their menu, they have 4 items. All under $6 with a food item and a bubble tea. Not bad at all! It’s not a large selection, but it will do.

Lazy Den Bubble Tea

Meat Sauce with Noodles and Green Milk Tea ($5) is the most popular item. It’s not relatively amazing, but it’ll satisfy your hunger without breaking your wallet.

If you are needing a cheap place to go at night for $5 noodles and bubble tea, definitely come here.

Foodology Disclaimer: I was invited by the owners to try out their restaurant. I brought along 3 friends to really keep this review as unbiased as possible! This review does not guarantee 100% similar service you might normally get from this restaurant.

ONYX Steakhouse and Lounge is located in the Suter Brook Village close to Ioco Road in Port Moody. They specialize in steaks and are known for their signature 40 day aged angus beef steaks. I don’t think I’ve heard of any other place that ages their meat for so long.

The inside is very cozy and has a little bit of a modern and hip ambiance about this place. It has 2 floors and is great for large parties.

The complementary bread is slightly crispy on the outside and the inside is very warm and pillowy. It also comes with herb butter. Mandu was quoted saying “I honestly think this is the best bread ever”! Hands down, this has to be one of the best breads we have had from a restaurants.

Sleeman Honey Brown came bottled, but the server poured into these super cool tall cups. So much classier than just serving it with the bottle. It’s a smooth full-bodied lager with a subtle taste of honey.

Earl Grey Tea comes with a package of mighty leaf tea. You also get a pot of hot water, sugar and milk.

Saganaki ($9.95) is deep-fried cheese. It is coated in panko crumbs, with grand marnier orange compote in a brandy flambée on top of the cheese. The cheese was nice and gooey with a nutty taste, which matched well with the compote on top.

Calamari ($11.95) is served with preserved lemon sriracha tzatziki. This dish was quite average and there wasn’t anything too special compared to other restaurants. It probably could have used a touch of more salt to it.

Top Sirloin 7oz & Lobster Tail ($36.90) is served with a dijon herb compound butter on top. There is also a large onion ring too. The lobster was cooked perfectly and the sirloin was medium rare. KoreanGirl couldn’t stop eating it since it was so good.

Fraser Valley trout stuffed with crab and shrimp, then pan seared with beurre blanc, which is a white wine butter sauce. This was their fish special of the day. There is also the large onion ring on top as well. The fish was cooked nicely, but I didn’t feel the crab and shrimp added much flavour to the dish. There were still a few bones inside too. It just tasted like a mash of seafood. I didn’t take a particular liking to the dish, but I guess that’s why this is a steakhouse.

Filet Mignon 10oz ($33.90) is served with a bacon mushroom demi glaze on top. The meat is very tender and you can really tell its a very good cut of meat. They ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly as well. Mandu and CanuckGirl quite enjoyed it.

Bacon Almond Brussel Sprouts ($5.90) The brussel sprouts were a but on the small side for some reason. Nonetheless, the bacon added a nice taste to the brussel sprouts. The almond didn’t really shine through but i did add a nice texture.

House Made Gnocchi ($6.95) was delicious! It’s not your regular size of gnocchi that’s for sure. It is a bit larger, but the texture is very light and pillowy. I personally really liked it and was my favorite out of all the side dishes.

Organic Yam Gratin ($7.60) are very average and similar to other places I’ve tried. Mandu seemed to really like them since she really wanted yam fries.

Creme Brulee Trio ($7.70) comes with 3 flavours – dark chocolate, baileys, and tahitian vanilla bean. It’s a great dessert to share since it has a little bit of everything. When you break into the top of the creme brulee, it makes that amazing cracking sound. Underneath is the delicious creamy creme brulee. Everyone had their favorite flavour, which they loved…so it’s a dessert that can satisfy a bunch of different taste buds.

Chocolate Sticky Toffee Pudding ($7.70) has chocolate toffee sauce and french vanilla ice cream on top. KoreanGirl and CanuckGirl loved this dessert! It wasn’t like a pudding at all. It seemed more like a warm chocolate cake with caramel and ice cream. It was still really good!

Overall, great experience dining at ONYX. There are a few items that are very intriguing on the menu such as the Bacon Stuffed Filet Mignon Burger and Prime Rib Hash. I’ll probably head back to ONYX for some brunch in the near future!

Words of Wisdom:

  • Free Parking on street
  • Prices similar to The Keg, but steaks are of higher quality and taste!
  • Delicious desserts, best to share
  • Offers brunch

Cake-Ya is this little shop in Coquitlam that serves Japanese desserts and baked goods. Their location is a bit hidden and very small.

They have zero seating and it looks more like a bakery. FoodQueen and I decided to give this place a try, but then we realized there were no seats inside, so we walked up a block to share a cake roll at Starbucks.

A lot of the items can be sold out by 2pm, so if you know what you want, best to call ahead of time for them to save you whatever you want.

Strawberry Cake Roll ($6.50) has a very light cake surrounding fresh whipped cream and strawberries. The price for it was pretty good!  I liked this roll because the cake is just so light with the whipped cream, you don’t feel heavy.

They only sell the cake rolls as a whole log, so it’s one of those items you must share.

I also bought 4 of the Caramel Cream’s (aka Purin Pudding). Green Tea, Black Sesame, Original and coffee. They ran out of a few flavours since I didn’t call ahead of time to reserve.

Custard Caramel Cream ($2.25) is probably one you must try. It’s the original flavour and you can’t go wrong with that. I gave this one to my little sister and she gobbled it up. She’s a picky eater but she loved this.

Green Tea Caramel Cream ($2.50) was also good. My mom commented saying the texture was very smooth and creamy. She was quite impressed.

Coffee Caramel Cream ($2.50) was quite interesting. The taste of coffee was strong. I found it was a bit rich in my opinion.

There’s so many ways to eat these desserts…in the cup or just flipped over like the ones above.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Call ahead of time to reserve specific items you want before it runs out

The Family decided to go to Boathouse for a lovely dinner. The have a bar section where patrons can grab a drink and enjoy the game.

On the other side is an open kitchen and high walled dinning room.

The Boathouse locations always have large windows so you can gaze upon the river. Their Lobsterfest always draws a large crowd.

Their dining room was packed and the layout of the restaurant gave people little room to move around.

They also have a kids menu if your kids dont want items from the regular menu. The kids menu is also a coloring book, so they will be occupied!

My sisters and dad all got Shirley temples ($3.79).

My father got the BC Wild Sockeye Salmon & Atlantic Lobster Tail ($32.99). This dish had a fire-grilled fillet and 4 oz. lobster tail. You also get wild rice and green peas and pepper.

All lobster dishes are supposed to come with butter and when we asked our server…she was kinda unsure. You can hear my rant about the service below….

My mother ordered the boathouse bouillabaisse ($28.99). This dish had wild salmon, halibut, prawn, scallop, mussels, alaskan king crab, and fingerling potatoes in a rich tomato broth. There is also bread that comes with it if you want to dip it into the broth.

My mother enjoyed this dish!

My older sister got the Louisiana Lobster Pot ($29.99). There is Carribean Lobster, Manila Clams, BC Wild Sockeye Salmon, mussels, chorizo sausage, tiger prawns, vegetables in a spicy broth.

She enjoyed this dish because it was packed full of seafood.

I ordered the sirloin & seafood grill ($28.99). The seafood skewer had a prawn, a small sea scallop & 2 pieces of wild salmon. It also came with mashed potatoes, green beans, and the sirloin. I did enjoy the dish, but I personally prefer The Keg over Boathouse.

The sirloin was done to medium rare and was perfect. The only bad thing about it was how the scallop that was part of the skewer was really small, it took me a while to figure out where it was because it was between the shrimps head and the tail.

Their mashed potatoes are really good!!

My little sister got the Fire-grilled sirloin ($21.99). Her sirloin was 7oz. It also came with mashed potatoes and green peas and a pepper.

She really liked the dish!

The bread never arrived at our table… we finally asked our server and she forgot to give us bread.

Our service was pretty poor since our waitress was fairly new. She couldn’t explain the new lobsterfest menu, forgot our butter for lobster, forgot the bread, rarely came to our table (we had to flag down other waitresses to get her), gave us the wrong utensils (she gave me a spoon for eating a steak…..)

What made it worse is when we went to the front desk to buy a giftcard for a family friend, our waitress passed by the front desk to check their computers…looked at us…walked past us and said nothing.

I usually don’t complain about service, but I was really upset by the service. Clearly, I will not be returning to this location.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Hard to get to…so drive and use google maps
  • Free parking in front
  • Reservations are suggested
  • Special Kids Menu
  • Lobster FEST!!
