A&W Canada: Wild-Caught Cod Burger

I love it when I see new items at A&W. They recently introduce their Cod Burger and Cod Wrap for a limited time only. They have never had a fish burger on the menu yet, so this give customers a new option. I got this for lunch as a meal and upgraded it to onion rings instead of fries.

Cod Burger

You will find hand cut strips of sustainably sourced cod, coleslaw and tartar sauce between two buns. As the cod is in strips, it was like fish sticks, but more moist of course. The cod held tightly between the bun and didn’t shift too much. The sandwich itself isn’t too large, so I felt like I needed the onion rings and drink to get to that point.

A&W has partnered with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to be able to get their burger and wrap certified as wild and sustainable. It’s a big step as not all fast food companies can say their seafood is caught with sustainable practices and keep the oceans well balanced to keep the ocean healthy.

Catch the Cod Burger or the Cod Wrap for the limited time since you never know when it will be off the menu.

Just had their cod burger…total waste of $6.00!!

It looks nothing like the burger i expected based on their advertising and certainly not fresh. Being from Nfld. I know fresh cod this is not worth the cost.

  2. I had the burger and the wrap a couple days ago and it was amazing. I found it tasted and the texture was like a piece of fish you would get at a fish and chips place. So great.

Apparently a limited time offer? I don’t know if they mean the pricing or the product offering because making all that investment for a limited time run (supporting fish/marine life sustainability) and the product development costs temporarily seems stupid unless hey are doing the KFC thing (ie. Double down) where they bring something for a short time and then pull it and then bring it back again for another quick short time.

Why is it that you people don’t have a seniors price for us 65 and over, especially for the fish burger/Code. You should know by now that most of us are a fixed income and simply cannot afford your high prices for the food and then having to buy a drink on top and by chance fries or Onion rings. Give us a break on your prices for us 65 and over and start showing that your company cares about us seniors.

  4. I had the new cod burger yesterday and was disappointed in how it tasted. It was dry because it was skimpy on the sauce and had only a few strands of cole slaw. The fish was overcooked and dried out. However, I could tell that if it was properly cooked and put together that it would be delicious. The fish looked quite flaky and not pressed like a lot of other fish burgers.
A&W needs to train their chefs a little better especially when it comes to new items on the menu. Management needs to check more for quality control.

A&W is usually one of the very few places we can eat because they do NOT have fish. When they introduce fish we cannot eat there because the cross-contamination will send my wife to the hospital. I wish they would stop this seasonal promotion and leave fish to the restaurants.who have it year-round.

  7. Been trying to find out what kind of cod is used, I highly suspect it’s Alaskan cod, in other words, plain old Pollock . A cod yes but most definately not the more expensive cod that people think they are getting. Alaskan cod has that non oily sweet fish flavor and cheap price that gos well with a low budget, don’t get me wrong, I love tempura pollock with a good home-made tartar sauce, it just drives me crazy that they try to go highbrow without at least calling it Alaskan cod. If it is tasty they will buy.

  8. What kind of cod is this? pollock? & is it sent to China for processing before it comes back here?

  9. Had the cod burger today. Loved the texture and the look, but totally tasteless!!
Needed salt, and I’m not using a lot of salt in my cooking, so if it was saltless to me, it was tasteless!!
Hardly any sauce, and what was there had no taste.
    Very disappointed!

  11. i had a cod burger yesterday and i was looking for cod all i had was batter. A wast of 6 Bucks.

  12. I was so looking forward to having a cod burger as they are back and never had one before. What a appointment, all I got was 2 pieces of batter and a tsp of fish (not sure if it was even cod) for $6.99, never ever again what a waste of money.

I was somewhat disappointed with the cod burger this year compared to last year. It is good but the cod filet burger last year was tender and so delicious.. this years has 2 filets ; kinda like fat fish fingers thus the texture was dryer and coating crisper. In other words I will not be rushing back to order another cod burger..

Tried their cod burger today and was totally disappointed! If that was cod then I am a monkey’s auntie! What I had was two pollack fish sticks stuck between a few pieces of cabbage and totally tasteless! The breading ( not battered)was thicker that the amount of fish itself. This was the last time that A &W ripped me off! Where was that “chef” ? Out fishing?

  15. Was looking forward to trying the new cod burger. Extremely disappointed. Sounds like I ate at the same place as Shelia. Very little fish, which I doubt was cod, and if it was I would be shocked. Mostly batter on a bun. Definitely would not order again. Very disappointed in A&W for having advertised a product that was so very different than what was served. Total waste of money!

  16. i take a hot dog bun with a cheese slice and put in one fish stick then halve the other one in the tiny bun with another cheese slice. add salt, pepper and ketchup. delicious. Also do the same thing with MacDonalds fish and chips.

  17. Totally disappointed with A&W Fish Cod Burger. Tasteless and a little fish . For sure never I buy it again in my life.

  18. It’s not Atlantic cod, because the Maritimes has a band on fishing cod for years. Take your cod and shove it up your arse

What Country do they get their cod from??? or is it like beef only a small amount from Canada. Haven’t eaten at A & W in years since they turned their backs on Canadian farms and their bull about antibiotics.

I had the cod burger today and found it really tasty though, as someone else said, it needed some salt. The fries I got with it had no salt either. The fish was crisp and the coleslaw very good. It’s definitely NOT pollock. I’ve has fresh caught cod in Newfoundland and I know what cod tastes like. This is the real deal. I hope A & W keeps this around awhile. Its nice to get something in fast food that isn’t a burger or chicken for once.

Absolutely Love it with a slice of tomato and a little ketchup. Can’t wait until it comes back next summer. A great catch

  22. I actually LOVED the Cod Burger! I went absolutely nuts with them. If they’re Alaskan Pollock, then yes, they should advertise as such, but Wow! I didnt care, i downed a few of them lol!

Just tried the cod burger. What a piece of crap !
It had absolutely no taste. And covered with shredded cabbage with no taste.
The commercials show it as a burger size piece of fish. Instead you get two small fish sticks wrapped in bread crumbs and then they charge $6 for it. It made me so sick that I threw it up. I wonder if the CEO of A&W tried this crap. He probably never eats at his own restaurant. I’ll never eat at A&W again.
    They can’t hold a candle to Arby’s.

  25. A total misrepresentation of what you actually get. It’s 2 fish sticks on a bun – no patty. It’s really pathetic and i won’t be having another!

  26. I guess it depends which A&W you go. My Cod Burger didn’t taste bad. It just didn’t taste. Period! I can taste a plain rice cake. Could not find any taste in the Cod burger. Is there a description for something less than bland?
