Award-winning Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie has launched its Easter Chocolate and Dessert Collection for 2024. The chocolatier is located in Burnaby Heights and White Rock and is known for its signature handcrafted chocolate showpieces, mini chocolate eggs and dragee, themed cakes, and limited-edition croissants. The entire collection is now available for pre-order online and in-store, with select pickup dates starting from March 15, 2024.

Chez Christophe’s playful Easter Chocolate Showpiece Collection is perfect for all ages and celebrates spring with a palette of soft pinks, pale greens, and vibrant yellows. The collection is available for pickup from March 15 – 30, 2024, and features three large showpieces: Hoppy Bunny, a pink egg-shaped chocolate bunny filled with dragee; Hatching Spring, a stylish green chocolate egg filled with dragee and decorated with geometric colourful chocolate flowers; and Chickie Mama, the egg-shaped chocolate duo of mama chicken and bright yellow chick, both filled with chocolate marshmallow dragee.

In addition, the collection offers smaller Easter basket treats, including the chocolate yellow Ducky filled with dragee, assorted chocolate lollipops, and the Treasure Hunt gift box filled with chocolate mini eggs and dragee.

  • Hoppy Bunny—The pink bunny is made of Chez Christophe’s signature Montreux 63.6% dark chocolate and filled with milk chocolate hazelnut dragee. The base is created from white chocolate, and atop sits three mini eggs of Swiss milk chocolate, 43% filled with gianduja chocolate.
  • Hatching Spring—The green egg is made of Swiss milk chocolate 43%, filled with milk chocolate hazelnut dragee, decorated with chocolate flowers, and sits on a base made from white chocolate.
  • Chickie Mama—Mama and chick are made of Swiss milk chocolate, 43% filled with dark chocolate marshmallow dragees, sitting on a base made from white chocolate.
  • Ducky—The duck is made from Swiss milk chocolate (43%), filled with dark chocolate marshmallow dragees, and sits on a white chocolate base.

The star of Easter dinner will be Chez Christophe’s individual Easter cakes. The Bunny Butt Cake is shaped as the name suggests and features rich dark chocolate cream cheese mousse with layers of carrot cake and raspberry confit on a crunchy hazelnut crumble. The Hot Cross Cake, inspired by holiday favourite hot cross buns, is made of light cinnamon mousse, layers of rum raisin jam, madeleine sponge, and a hazelnut crunch.

New this year and perfect for Easter brunch or breakfast, the limited-edition Carrot Croissant, available for pickup on March 29 and 30, 2024, updates the classic pastry. The handcrafted Easter croissant is filled with carrot cake and cream cheese pastry cream.

Chez Christophe has two convenient locations: 4717 Hastings St., Burnaby, BC, and 1558 Johnston Rd., White Rock, BC. They are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Limited item quantities are available for the Easter Collection. Guests are encouraged to order early online for in-store pickup to avoid disappointment.

Experience the enchanting flavours of spring with the launch of Beaucoup Bakery’s new Sakura Collection. Available starting March 8, 2024 at both its Fairview (2150 Fir Street) and Downtown (600 Dunsmuir Street) locations, guests can experience hanami (flower viewing) while savouring several new, limited-edition sweet treats, all inspired by Vancouver’s iconic cherry blossom season, as well as the return of one of Beaucoup’s greatest hits – the Cheese Ramen Croissant.

“In the spring, cherry blossoms of all kinds usually start to bloom – from pink, blush, to white varietals – it’s such a beautiful time of year, especially when it’s warm enough to sit under the sakura trees,” says Betty Hung, who co-owns Beaucoup Bakery with her brother Jacky Hung. “Our new Sakura Collection is great for early picnics under the tree or to take home as a surprise for friends and family.”

Beaucoup Bakery’s Sakura Collection is available until April 14, 2024 and features:

  • Hanami Set ($10.95 per set) includes a drink and treat – iced hojicha latte with sea salt foam and a mini dorayaki with cherry blossom ganache
  • Ichigo Matcha Opera ($8.95 per slice; whole cakes available for pre-order), featuring matcha ganache, strawberry cream, and a matcha-infused joconde cake
  • Cheese Ramen Croissant ($7.95) is a French-Japanese creation with ramen, bechamel, butter shoyu corn, gruyere, and cheddar.

“We definitely wanted to create something fun and unique with our Sakura Collection this year, while evoking visions of cherry blossoms,” adds Betty. “For example, matcha and strawberry is a classic combo, especially given the pinks and greens. The Cheese Ramen Croissant is one of our most popular savoury croissants. We had to bring it back!”

In addition to its Sakura Collection, Beaucoup Bakery is currently working on their Easter Collection for spring, which will be unveiled soon.

And of course, fun Easter egg hunts for the kids.”

Goldilocks’ Silog Brunch ($65; feeds 4) features garlic rice, sunny side up eggs, a choice between chicken or pork bbq skewers, longganisa (sweet filipino sausage), bangus (milkfish), and Pan de Leche (sweet milk bread).

For larger groups, the Easter Eats Feast ($120) feeds six and includes: a choice between a small tray of chicken adobo, dinakdakan (grilled pork marinated in vinegar), or menudo (pork stew); a choice between three noodles – Miki Sotanghon, Spaghetti, or Palabok; and a choice between three different empanadas – beef, chicken adobo, or pork; and steamed rice.

Sweet treats include Goldilock’s popular Easter Eggs (from $5.50 for a small to $7.50 for a large), which are hand-decorated with fondant and sugar in a wide variety of soft pastels. Inside, guests can find a fun selection of chocolates and candies.

Mini cakes (from $17), replicating Easter baskets, are great to share with loved ones. Flavours include chocolate with a berry filling and ube. Guests can also pick-up whimsical sugar cookies ($5.50) in bunny and ($4.50) Easter egg designs, as well as the return of Goldilock’s favourite Eggs-saymada ($4), a chocolate ganache filled ensaymada with chocolate eggs.

“Our team always enjoy coming up with fun ideas for Easter – there are so many possibilities when creating desserts by hand. We’re especially proud of our Easter basket cakes this year – you’ll want to pick one up!” adds Yee.

It’s bold, it’s brand-new, and it just might steal your heart. It’s Good Thief, an adventurous new dining concept from the brother-sister duo behind one of Vancouver’s most beloved restaurants, Anh and Chi. Sparked by a deep desire to celebrate daring creativity and to defy convention, the sibling concept to their award-winning restaurant is opening right next door at 3336 Main Street, in the heart of Vancouver’s eclectic Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

“Good Thief is not just a dining experience; it’s a venture into unexplored territories of flavour and design. We can’t wait to unveil the details,” says Vincent Nguyễn, chef/owner, co-founder and head of operations. “This project is a culmination of our lifelong passion and a bold complement to Anh and Chi. We believe it celebrates our heritage in a way that’s never been seen before.”

Together with his sister, co-founder, and creative director Amélie Nguyễn, Vincent brings the best of Vietnamese cuisine, culture, and design to Good Thief — in fact, the name is a nod to the inspiration they’re taking from their heritage. Born to Vietnamese refugees and raised in East Vancouver, the Nguyễn siblings are on a mission to redefine Vietnamese cuisine in the Pacific Northwest, emphasizing community, connection, and culinary excellence.

Since opening Anh and Chi in 2016, the Nguyễns have been praised for their innovative approach to Vietnamese dining, transforming their parents’ legacy, Pho Hoang, into a modern culinary landmark and MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand pick. Good Thief promises to be a thrilling extension of their vision.

“We’re excited to build on what we’ve done at Anh and Chi,” said Amélie. “With Good Thief, we’re inviting our community to explore the depth of Vietnamese culture through adventurous and unexpected culinary journeys. Our new venture will offer unique flavours and experiences that foster connections and create lasting memories.”

As the Good Thief team applies the finishing touches to a concept and space aimed at setting a new benchmark for dining in Vancouver, they invite guests to follow the journey on at goodthief.ca

Michelin-recommended Fanny Bay Oyster Bar & Shellfish Market will begin phase two of a major expansion that will more than double the size of the popular downtown seafood dining staple at 762 Cambie Street on Monday, March 11.

While the dining room will temporarily closed, the retail at their Shellfish Market will remain open throughout a construction process. The expansion will see the removal of a wall separating an adjoining space at BLU Hotel and expand their existing room by almost 1,800 square feet and make room for an additional 60 seats, a private dining room for parties and shucking classes and an addition to the oyster bar seating at the popular Stadium District restaurant.

Still Vancouver’s only tide-to-table oyster bar and shellfish market, Fanny Bay first opened in the heart of the city’s Stadium District in 2016 and quickly became one of the city’s seafood staples thanks to its daily Happy Hour and lively oyster bar where patrons could watch the Fanny Bay shuckers at work.

The Fanny Bay Shellfish Market will be open for business as usual for retail purchases, but patrons are asked to place orders online or via phone to help expedite the process in case of any construction disruptions. For the duration of the work, the shellfish market will be showcasing an array of take-and-bake and enjoy-at-home features such as Shucker’s Packs (12 or 18 fresh oysters, shucking knife, mignonette and lemon), fresh UniMussels and Clams, Smoked Scallops, Cooked and Cracked Dungeness CrabMiso-Marinated SablefishSeafood Boil Kits and more. The restaurant will also continue offering its catering services throughout the expansion.

“We’re so excited to begin the next phase of this project and continue building out our humble little space. Thank everyone for their patronage and patience throughout this construction process,” says Fanny Bay Oyster Bar & Shellfish Market Co-Owner and Wholesale/Marketing Manager Malindi Taylor. “We expect construction to be finished in early April and we can’t wait to welcome everyone into the bright, new and spacious quarters for Fanny Bay here in the heart of the Stadium District.”

The shellfish and retail market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers fresh and smoked seafood selections, premium shellfish and oysters from British Columbia and Washington State, gourmet pantry items, seafood boxes and specialty kits available to order online for pick-up or home delivery.

PAELLA POP-UP AT COPPERPENNY DISTILLING

During the construction process, the Fanny Bay culinary crew will set sail for the North Shore and a seafood paella pop-up as part of a No. 002 Vodka Spirit Launch at Copperpenny Distilling Co. (103-288 Esplanade East in North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale district) on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. During both seatings, Fanny Bay Chef Tommy Shorthouse and his team will prepare and serve up a seafood paella with pink scallops, prawns, Humboldt squid, mussels and clams on an authentic outdoor gas-fired paella pan while the Fanny Bay shuckers offer fresh West Coast oysters to pair with No. 002 Vodka shots, martinis and Copperpenny’s award-winning No. 006 Oyster Shell Gin made with shells supplied by Fanny Bay. A limited number of tickets for the pop-up’s two seating times are available by clicking here.

The restaurant will offer lunch and dinner service daily, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Guests who wish to make reservations or learn more about the restaurant are invited to visit Sula’s website by clicking HERE.

Contemporary Design

The lower lounge area showcases a black marble bar with gold detailing, while the statement bright orange glass back bar pays tribute to colourful Indian spices.

Modern Indian Cuisine

At the helm of Sula’s Davie Street culinary team, Executive Chef Bal Ajagaonkar discovered his passion for the culinary arts at age 15 while working a summer kitchen job in his hometown resort community of Malvan on India’s West Coast. His culinary talent garnered numerous accolades, including at the national level Great India Cooking Competition, held in Mumbai, with four gold medals (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and the prestigious Best Overall Live Cooking Award (2019). Most recently, Chef Bal served as the Executive Sous Chef at Mumbaikar Indian Restaurant and Bar in Toronto, ON.

Sula Davie Street’s modern Indian menu offers shared plates like the Murgh Tarts, flakey pastry shells filled with chicken keema, and the Aagri Zinga, Aagri-style shrimp marinated in a blend of traditional masala. The tandoor highlights include Kashmiri Lamb Chops and the vegetarian Multani Paneer and Mushrooms. Guests can enjoy over 14 specialty curries, of which Chef Bal’s favourite is the Malvani Fish Curry, a tribute to his hometown, made with roughly 30 different ingredients. For traditionalists, Sula has included four classic curries on the menu, including their popular Palak Curry and Korma Curry.

“Our team used cherished family recipes and the heritage Indian flavours that we grew up with, adapting them for today’s modern diner,” says Chef Bal Ajagaonkar. “The excitement for us has been paying homage to the spice mixtures perfected over centuries while introducing innovative elements to the dishes to present them in different ways. We are thrilled to introduce this exciting new concept in Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood and be part of the community here.”

Valentine’s Day has traditionally been known as the toughest day for third wheels. However, the restaurant chain is temporarily changing its name to “Pizza Pizza Pizza,” celebrating third wheels on February 14th with the Third Wheel Wheel Deal. Third wheels accompanied by a couple at participating Pizza Pizza Pizza locations on Valentine’s Day between 6pm and 9pm local time will receive a free medium one-topping pizza. All they have to do is show the Pizza Pizza Pizza app in restaurant to redeem it.

Sharing this pizza with the eligible couple is optional.

This year’s offer continues Pizza Pizza Pizza’s mission to make everyone feel included on Valentine’s Day, because Everyone Deserves Pizza. It follows up on last year’s Singles for Singles promotion, which offered singles a free slice on Valentine’s Day. This year’s promotion is bigger and will also be available at more locations across the country — nine of them in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia.

“Last year, the response to Singles for Singles from Canadians was incredible as we expanded our traditional Valentine’s Day offers to include a program catering to single folks. If you’re looking to spice things up, A&W has got you covered with the launch of their new limited-time offer (LTO), the Spicy Piri-Piri Buddy Burger. The new Buddy Burger brings the heat with a distinctive piri piri sauce (hot chili pepper flavour), topped with crisp whole-leaf lettuce, and a slice of tomato and red onion, and comes with your choice of seasoned 100% breaded chicken breast, a 1.6 oz grass-fed beef patty, or opt for a crispy hash brown potato patty. Sandwiched between a freshly toasted bun, each Spicy Piri-Piri Buddy Burger in this fiery new lineup is just $3.99.

The Potato Buddy Burger: Powered by a Popular Menu Hack!

The Spicy Piri-Piri Potato Buddy Burger is A&W’s first Buddy Burger that highlights a crispy hash brown as the star. The new LTO is a result of community-driven innovation. For years, A&W employees have been quietly building a menu hack for themselves as well as guests, predominantly from the South-Asian community. With this hack, a crispy hash brown replaces the usual beef patty and is garnished with red onion, lettuce, tomato, and the spiciest sauce available. The Potato Buddy Burger is a new option that recreates familiar flavours from home.

“For years A&W employees and guests (predominantly from the South-Asian community) have been quietly making this menu hack for themselves. Its popularity was clear to me during a meeting with Ontario operators, where every one of them knew the exact same menu hack recipe because of how many guests were ordering it,” said Priya Dhillon, franchisee of over 40 A&W Restaurant locations in Canada.

“This hack was happening organically at A&Ws all across Canada. It was a no-brainer for us to develop a recipe that complements our guests’ love for a potato patty substitute and adds a nice flavour kick to it,” said Karan Suri, Director of Menu Development at A&W Canada. “This is an exciting opportunity to introduce a new menu item that reflects the diversity of our guests. Our take on a spicy piri piri sauce that is zesty, spicy and addictive is designed to satisfy more of our guests’ cravings for spice and to suit their dietary preferences. I can’t wait for Canadians to try it.”

In Prayag Mishra’s recent TikTok, a viral Canadian content creator, he shared his experience trying the new Spicy Piri-Piri Potato Buddy Burger at his local A&W. “It’s crazy to see the power of the internet and what happens when a brand listens to their community, leading to this menu hack becoming an actual offering for non-meat eaters like myself. So when they proposed collaborating on this Potato Buddy Burger, it was an immediate yes. Proof that even Pookies’ dreams can come true.”

Gather your spiciest buddies and treat them to the new Spicy Piri-Piri Buddy Burger, now available for just $3.99 at all A&W locations across Canada, for a limited time only.

Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) has partnered with Vancouver Public Library (VPL) to host a Family Day pop-up event on Saturday, February 17. Taking place at VPL’s Central Library in downtown Vancouver, the event features activities for families along with a range of resources supporting stronger, more resilient individuals and families.

With the cost of living increasing every day, and inflation impacting the price of food, rent, and childcare, more and more families need help to meet their most basic needs. FSGV and VPL – two of the longest running organizations in Vancouver – are cornerstone resources for local families, providing tailored supports for people of all backgrounds. This collaboration aims to build strong, empowered communities by connecting individuals and families across Metro Vancouver to the information and assistance they need.

FSGV and VPL’s Family Day pop-up event will address challenges facing families today and recommend solutions that help people build resilience. Participants can expect family-friendly activities as well as adult-oriented information, including:

  • Financial coaches sharing tips to improve financial stability, navigate government benefits, and overcome other barriers;
  • Resource workers suggesting community supports to help with a range of challenges; and,
  • Family counsellors answering questions and recommending programming and resources.

The event takes place in the Central Library promenade (350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, B.C.) on Saturday, February 17, between 10am and 2pm.

“As the affordability crisis continues to hit families hard, we’re seeing impacts in every area of our programming,” said Maria Howard, CEO of Family Services of Greater Vancouver. “Families and individuals are struggling with their mental health, financial resilience, and overall wellbeing. We want folks across the Lower Mainland to know that FSGV is here for families of all kinds with trauma counselling, family supports, our Financial Empowerment program, and more. It’s okay to need a helping hand. You’re not alone.”

“Every day we hear from Vancouver families who need support, but don’t know where to begin. That’s where the library comes in,” said Erin Watkins, Manager of Programming and Learning at Vancouver Public Library. “VPL is often the first stop to connect people with the help they need. Whether it’s finding the right book to help plan your family’s budget or make more affordable meals, or providing free parenting or tax planning workshops. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Family Services of Greater Vancouver, we are able to offer additional programs that can help people cope with inflation and rising interest rates, take control of their credit, plan for retirement and their children’s post-secondary education, save for their future, and more.”

FSGV and VPL’s Family Day event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. For more information, visit www.fsgv.ca. Join the conversation about challenges families are facing right now by following FSGV (@vanfamservices) on Instagram and by using the hashtag #FamilyIs.

KitchenAid unveils its 2024 Colour of The Year: Blue Salt. Blue Salt is a periwinkle blue with a subtle iridescent, reddish-pearl finish that softly shifts hues depending on the angle or lighting. It’s a living colour that is bound to break the monotony in the kitchen. Available today in the Artisan Stand Mixer, Blue Salt is an ever-shifting hue that reflects the versatility that the kitchen plays in our lives.

“At KitchenAid, we aim to create extraordinary kitchen experiences, and that often starts with the colour and design of our products. The 2024 Colour of the Year is no different, it’s the first colour selection to feature a unique finish” said Janice Ryder, Country Manager, KitchenAid Canada. “Inspired by how a pinch of salt opens your senses to new depths of flavor, Blue Salt is a sensory reminder to see every day in a new light.”

Blue Salt marks the sixth KitchenAid Colour of the Year announcement. KitchenAid has championed the power of colour to fuel creativity since introducing the first Stand Mixer colours in 1955. Today the brand’s Colour of the Year taps global trends to capture the current moment and inspire makers around the world.

“We began the 2024 KitchenAid Colour of the Year research process in early 2021,” said Brittni Pertijs, Colour, Finish, and Material Manager at Whirlpool. “Warm tones like the two previous KitchenAid Colour of the Year selections, Beetroot and Hibiscus, had been so dominant that we knew cooler tones were going to have a resurgence. We wanted the 2024 Colour of the Year to reflect the shifting tones and senses of nature, like air, or the ocean.”

The Artisan Stand Mixer is now available on KitchenAid.ca.
