pc-canning-1-1

With winter approaching, one of the best things to do with BC fruits is to pickle and preserve them to prolong their lifespan. Apples and pears work exceptionally well for chutney and jam. I love to make them an addition to my meat and cheese plates during holidays.

pc-canning-3

One of my favourite places to get my produce is Real Canadian Superstore as they carry about 40% local BC produce. A few weeks ago, Jackie Ellis and Real Canadian Superstore taught me the basics of canning and how to do it safely. Apparently, a majority of people will have fears of canning because they are afraid of accidentally doing in incorrectly.

Here are three recipes to begin canning.

pc-canning-6

Spicy Pear Pickles

pc-canning-5

[tabs tab1=”Spicy Pear Pickles” ]

[tab id=1]

Makes about 10 x 220mL jars

Ingredients:

  • 14 local BC pears, peeled, cored and sliced into 1/8” inch slices
  • 0.5 cup lemon juice
  • 1-2 tbsp gochu garu (Korean red pepper flake) depending on how spicy you like it
  • 2 cup daikon, small diced
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp minced ginger + 10 slices
  • 3 green onion cut into 3” strips
  • 10 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp peppercorn
  • 10 strips lemon peel
  • 5 cups rice vinegar
  • 1 cup mirin
  • ½ cup fish sauce
  • 0.3 cup salt
  • 1.5 cup sugar

Directions:

  1. Gently mix pears, gochu garu, lemon juice, daikon, sesame oil and minced ginger in a large bowl.
  2. Place a few strips of green onion in sterilized jars and fill snugly with the pear mixture until they are about 1 to 1 ½” from the rim.
  3. Boil the slices of ginger, garlic cloves peppercorns, lemon peel, vinegar, mirin, fish sauce, salt and sugar in a large pot until the sugar and salt are fully dissolved and the mixture is at a rolling boil.
  4. Pour the vinegar mixture evenly into the jars so they cover the pears, making sure that one slice of ginger, one clove of garlic and one lemon peel are in each jar.
  5. Cover the jars and refrigerate, allow ferment and eat within 2 weeks. The flavour will intensify as time passes so you can eat the pears immediately or after a week and a half to get more intensity.
  6. Eat with Asian dishes like soba noodles, on top of fried eggs and rice, in beef and lettuce wraps or in rice bowls.

ryuu-1

Ryuu Japanese Kitchen is your place for sushi and Japanese food at McArthur Glen Designer Outlet. There’s a handful of dining options in this outlet, but you’ll only find sushi and a few other dishes here unless you travel further to Richmond city centre or Downtown Vancouver.

I came here as a guest of McArthur Glen Designer Outlet to try out a few items off Ryuu Japanese Kitchen’s menu.

Interior

ryuu-2

The interior is large for small to large groups. It wasn’t too busy when we went. The interior is very clean and modern.

Drinks

ryuu-3

Asahi beer is on tap. It is light and citrusy and pairs well with Japanese food. We got a large pitcher to share amongst the group and poured our individual glasses.

ryuu-5

They have hot and cold sake for those who enjoy it.

ryuu-8

Food

ryuu-4

Philly Roll has crab meat, avocado, cream cheese and topped with salmon and mayo. Anything with salmon and avocado excites me.

ryuu-6

Dragon Roll has avocado, shrimp tempura and topped with sauce, BBQ eel and tobiko. A decent roll to have with your meal.

ryuu-7

Takoyako is a ball-shaped snack filled with a small piece of cooked octopus inside. It is topped with mayo, seaweed, garnish and takoyaki sauce. It comes with 8 pieces to an order.

Overall, the items we tried were decent. Pretty standard sushi rolls compared to some other Japanese restaurants out there in Vancouver.

Zend Conscious Lounge is part of the Taste of Yaletown happening October 13th to 27th. The two-week dining event showcases unique dishes from 31 restaurants in the Yaletown neighbourhood. Restaurants offer exclusive featured menus, special tastings and innovative pairing combinations at set prices of $25, $35, $45.

I had a chance to dine at Zend Conscious Lounge to try a few items off their set menus. Zend Conscious Lounge are an organic plant-based eatery. That means no gluten, no dairy, and they only use the healthiest of ingredients. They are also Canada’s first kava kava bar. Did you know they donate 100% of their profits?

  • 2 Mini Burgers with yam fries
  • Taco
  • Trio of Salad Sampler
  • Callelloni Roll
  • Two Homemade Plant-based Cheese Sampler with Raw Seed Crackers

[/tab]

[/tabs]

Interior

zend-2

Their interior is simple, but with a lot of natural wood colours on the table and walls. They have small to large tables, so make sure you make reservations to ensure your group gets a good spot.

Kava Kava

zend-12

Zend isn’t on the Taste of Yaletown menu, but it was something that we had to try when we were here. Zend is a non-alcoholic beverage that is a blend of Rhodiola, Yerba Mate, Kava, Holy Basil and Ashwaganda. It is traditionally used to relieve stress, depression and anxiety. It makes people more calm and works in 20 minutes or less.

zend-11

We drank a shot of Zend and it definitely had an earthy taste to it. A few minutes after, you started to feel a numb tingly sensation on our tongue and cheeks. Completely normal apparently.

zend-9

Signature Elixers Sampler

zend-3

The elixer samplers come in small mason jars. we got to try 2 and both were good and full of fresh pressed juice and Zend.

Caesar Kale Salad

zend-4

The salad has oat cheese parmesan crisps, gluten-free amaranth croutons, & prebiotic garlicky avocado dressing. I like this salad, it was simple but it had a good amount of flavour that reminded me of a caesar salad. A nice light item to start off the meal.

Housemade plant-based cheese board

zend-5

On the cheeseboard, you will find their featured spreads, house-spiced heart-healthy nuts, probiotic veg. with Raw Seed Crackers. The cheeses were very creamy and the seed crackers added needed texture.

Tacos

zend-6

There’s aren’t any regular tacos, it has dehydrated beans, fresh guacamole, heart-healthy cashew queso, & organic fresh-cut salsa. It’s a nice item to share as 3 come in one order. I love the salsa and it adds a nice freshness to the dish.

The Mini Raw Burger

zend-7

Their burger is mad of bio-available sprouted grains and served on a seared portobello cap. Very nice bite sized burger. It also has a side of yam fries and a spicy sauce.

Dessert Sampler plate

zend-10

You will find their triple chocolate torte with cocoa and coconut crust, fudge, and chocolate avocado mousse. Their other seasonal dessert was my favourite.

The Raw Pumpkin Cheesecake has a creamy cashew base, walnut and medjool date crust, pumpkin & pumpkin spices. This was my favourite of the night.

Final Thoughts

zend-8

For the longest time, I thought Zend was a Japanese restaurant and clearly I was far from wrong. I was glad I was able to have the opportunity to dine at this plant-based eatery. I would really enjoyed seeing the transformation of these raw ingredients into the dishes that were presented on the menu. It’s definitely not a restaurant thats for everyone, but I thought it was an experience that was different than some other restaurants out there. If you wanted to be taken out of your comfort zone, this would be it.

eat-harvest-23

Eat Harvest was one of many events for this years EAT! Vancouver Food and Cooking Festival. This year was a bit different than in past years where it’s a series of many events rather than the larger trade show.

This event features Canada’s top culinary talent together for a unique epicurean feast. There were lots of opportunities to meet Canada’s top chefs and sample their exciting new fall dishes. The event was headlined by Food Network host Michael Smith and 17 of Canada’s renowned chefs celebrating Fall flavours accompanied by premium California wines and decadent desserts. This sold out event had proceeds from this event support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Chef Michael Smith

Chef Michael Smith was such a joy to meet and after years of watching him on TV, I was super excited to meet him. He was a lot taller in real life than I imagined.

He sampled Village Bay Oysters from New Brunswick topped with a bloody mary ice. The oyster were very fresh and has a salty and savoury profile, which the bloody mary ice complimented.

zombie-runner-1

Zombie Runner is a running store and an espresso cafe. They are known to have good lattes in Palo Alto. We were at the farmers market on California Ave. and decided to come here for an early morning caffeine run.

They serve espresso drinks, drip coffee, ZombieRunner Chai, cold-brewed coffee, green tea latte and others.

zombie-runner-2

The line up was pretty close to the front of the store. Just follow the long line to the counter with coffee close to the rear of the store. It’s pretty interesting to see all the running gear as you wait for coffee.

zombie-runner-3

I got a latte as it has espresso and steamed milk with latte art on top. They use whole milk but you can request 2% or soy. It’s a pretty solid cup of coffee to get you going in the morning. I wanted to try a few other items but I wanted to stick with a classic drink.

Overall, a good place to stop for a coffee.

costco-wings-3

Costco locations in Canada have chicken wings. A few months ago, they secretly added these to some of their locations. When I heard a few friends got their hands on these, I had to grab a bunch for dinner.

costco-wings-1

I came right here after work to the Willingdon location in Burnaby. A pound is $4.99 and family-size (3 pounds) is $13.99. They seem to have lowered their prices as the original prices were covered. It’s odd to see prices go lower rather than higher.

costco-wings-2

They deep-fry all their wings in a separate fryer than their other items. Since everyone else wanted wings and they can only make so much at one time, I waited about 25 minutes around 6pm on a Friday.

costco-wings-4

Make sure to get a hot sauce and BBQ sauce to dip your wings into. It helps add a bit of flavour. They gave us 1 hot sauce and 2 BBQ sauces for this bucket.

costco-wings-6

I got the family-sized bucket and it has about 32 pieces. M and I shared this and we were able to do a pound each. There are wings and drumettes in the mix. It is a bit crunchy, but it’s got nothing on Church’s Chicken.

costco-wings-5

It’s fun to try something different. It’s decent, but it’s lacking the super crisp exterior. The wings aren’t overly seasoned so it pairs well with the sauces. I preferred the hot sauce and M preferred the BBQ sauce. The wings are best eaten hot, so the skin a bit more crisp.

juke-1

Juke recently opened in Chinatown serving fried chicken and ribs. The fried chicken batter is gluten-free so all those who are gluten-intolerant won’t have to worry anymore.

I came here with a few friends to celebrate the end of a long week. What better way to do that than consume meat and beer? We came around dinner time and it was packed. So, we waited about 15 minutes for a table for 6. They told a lot of people to go to get drinks at nearby lounges so they wouldn’t be waiting around the restaurant.

Interior

juke-2

The interior is dark and cozy. Not too many seats if you are planning to eat in. There is a take out area if you don’t wait to dine inside.

There’s a neon light of a lady near the back of the dining area.

You can even see cartoon drawings of ladies on the paper that comes with the chicken and ribs.

juke-13

Draft Beer

juke-6

Postmark Brewing Blonde Ale is what I got to go with our feast of meat. It has a nice light and crisp taste to it.

Spirits & Suds

juke-7

Mezcal and Postmark Brewing Blonde Ale was what my friends ordered on the menu. You take the shot and then chase it with the small cup of beer. I’ve never seen this option at a restaurant before.

Snacks and Sides

juke-12

Charred Corn is covered in delicious sauce and comes with 3 pieces. Good flavours, but it was a bit saucy for me so it kinda masked the sweetness of the corn.

juke-11

Mac and Cheese is another item we ordered on the side and it was pretty good. Cheesy just the way I like it.

juke-8

Dirty Fries wasn’t dirty enough for me. I wanted more sauce and toppings.

Mains

juke-9

Full Rack of Spicy Pork Ribs comes with a slaw. Good amount of meat for each piece. We shared this with our table of 6.

juke-10

Fried Chicken is gluten-free and also comes with slaw on the side. The chicken is nice and juicy with the batter having a nice crunch.

Take Out

juke-4

As it is pretty busy during dinner time, there is a take out section if you want to grab and go. The menu is a bit different than the dining in menu.

Final Thoughts

juke-14

It was fun coming with a group of 6, but there aren’t a lot of tables for large groups. Best to come early to snag a table. We enjoyed our night of drinks, fried chicken and ribs. As for the food, it was good but Church’s Chicken is still very dear to my heart…plus its hard to beat the price.

ya-yoi-1

Yayoi opened their first US location in Palo Alto on University Avenue serving up teishoku-style Japanese restaurant, which are set meals which typically includes smaller side dishes like rice, miso soup, side dish and pickled vegetables with the main course.

My friend took us here when we were visiting for a few days. I was pretty excited since I always love trying new food.

Interior

ya-yoi-4

The interior is nice and large, so there are a good amount of seats. We found that a lot of young families were dining here around dinner time.

Ordering

ya-yoi-3

We browsed through the menu and then we started playing around with the iPad, where you input your order. You do everything on here and it ensures your order is correct and maximizes efficiency.

We even ordered our glasses or water on it too. No need to wait for someone till fill up our glasses.

ya-yoi-2

Dinner Sets

ya-yoi-8

Katsu Toji Teishoku has pork cutlet simmered in sauce and egg. It comes with ice, soup and side dishes.

ya-yoi-7

I ordered the Omaze Don with salmon sashimi, okra, tororo, natto, tomago, seaweed and ontama. You mix it all together in the bowl and enjoy.

ya-yoi-9

It comes with rice, miso soup, and side dishes. It was a very delicious and clean meal. The natto isn’t for everyone as it is fermented beans, people seem to have a love/hate relationship with them.

ya-yoi-6

Nasu Miso Teishoku has eggplant, pork belly, and veggies in a miso sauce. It is served with rice, miso soup, and 2 side dishes.

Final Thoughts

ya-yoi-5

Overall, the portion were good and we were pretty stuffed. The meals were well balanced and I enjoy set meals and you get a little taste of everything. The service was pretty good and they don’t require tipping. I ended up tipping anyways since it was a good meal.

magicream-1

MagicCream is the latest addition to the Kerrisdale neighbourhood featuring liquid-nitrogen ice cream with over 40 different flavours.

We were invited to try their ice cream and to see how they differ from the other nitrogen ice cream shops in town.

Process

magicream-2

They use liquid nitrogen instead of dry ice in their ice cream and it is completely safe.

  1. Choose your base
  2. Choose your flavour
  3. Choose toppings
  4. Let the magic begin

Once you choose what you want, its really fun to see them put together your ice cream.

magicream-9

All that smoke goes pouring out when the nitrogen and creates a cloudy magical scene.

magicream-3

Nitrogen Ice Cream

magicream-10

We got to try a variety of flavours and combinations in family size.

  • Chocolate ice-cream with brownie bites and chocolate sauce
  • Caramel popcorn
  • Rootbeer with gummy bears
  • Strawberry with Cheesecake bites
  • Black sesame with coconut and Reese’s cups
  • Coffee with Cookie Dough and Mochi
  • Ovaltine with walnuts
  • Milk tea with pearls and mango jelly
  • Mango sorbet with mango & lychee jelly

magicream-11

All the flavours were well made, smooth with no icy chunks inside. The ice cream didn’t melt too quickly compared to some other places in town. Prices are decent too.

magicream-7

For my personal taste preferences, I didn’t like the very sweet ones with sweet toppings. I can see those would be very fun for kids to eat, but I found that as I got older, I like my snacks less sweet. The downside of getting older.

magicream-6

A few others found root beer to be a pretty unique flavour.

magicream-5

I really liked the Milk Tea Ice Cream with pearls and mango jelly.

magicream-4

Another favourite was the Ovaltine classic with walnuts. They also have a Chinese version of Ovaltine that tastes slightly different, but I went with the classic. I chose the walnuts for texture.

Final Thoughts

magicream-8

Overall, there are a lot of flavours at MagiCream, which is great for groups who have diverse tastes. You can also customize it is any way that you want. They also sell them in 3 different sizes.

I’ll definitely be back for the milk tea and Ovaltine flavours.

sushirrito-6

Sushirrito is the original sushi burrito concept before it went big around the world. When I was in San Francisco and Palo Alto, I knew I had to check this place out.

Sushirrito is made-to-order with a mix of Asian and Latin flavours. It’s the perfect alternative to fast food.

In Palo Alto, the Sushirrito is located on University Ave close to Stanford.

sushirrito-1

When we came here for lunch, it was packed. Its also located beside Blue Bottle Cafe. There are limited seats inside.

Lava Nachos

sushirrito-2

Lava Nachos are in limited quantities each day. It has brown rice chips topped with tuna picante, melted Pepper Jack cheese, ginger guac, green onions, nori strips, and Sriracha aioli. A very flavourful dish and great for a few people to share.

sushirrito-4

Geisha’s Kiss has Yellowfin Tuna (Hand-Line Caught), tamago, piquillo peppers, lotus chips, namasu cucumber, green leaf lettuce, ginger guac, yuzu tobiko with a sesame white soya sauce.

I liked the clean fresh taste of the tuna with the crunchy texture of the lotus chips.

sushirrito-3

Sumo Crunch has shrimp tempura, surimi crab, shaved cabbage, cucumber, ginger guac, and Sriracha Aioli. It is then covered in red tempura flakes. This version was pretty good as well.

sushirrito-5

Genmai Horchata is one of the drinks they have. It is their blend of green tea and horchata.

Overall, it was a good quick lunch for us and with the 3 items ordered for 2 people, it was plenty of food. The sushirrito reminded me of a large uncut sushi roll with different types of filling and sauce.

They have their ice cream sandwiches filled with either:

  • Pistachio Gelato

Electric Tour Company has various tours throughout San Francisco. The most popular tours are the Fisherman’s Wharf & Waterfront Segway Tour, as well as the Golden Gate Park Segway Tour.

We took the Golden Gate Park Segway tour through the westside of park. As this was our first time on a segway, we opted for the basic tour rather than the advanced.

segway-electric-tour

On this tour, we glided through seven beautiful miles of Golden Gate Park’s landscaped trails and roads, visiting hidden sights that include the Lily Pond, Shakespeare Garden and Fern Grotto. The tour explores the east end, including the National Aids Memorial, Music Concourse, Pioneer Grove, and Stow Lake.

Our group had 6 people, so it was a small and intimate group.

We began the day with a 40 minute introductory lesson on using the seaways properly and doing mini exercises to get everyone comfortable with the segways.

electric-tour-company-golden-gate-park-5

For me it was easy to get a hang of maneuvering the segway, but there were a few people who needed extra assistance in controlling their speed and stopping.

electric-tour-company-golden-gate-park-6

Once the guides were confident in our abilities, we went on our way around the park visiting the main loop, Conservatory of Flowers, lake, Japanese garden and then back to where the tour started.

electric-tour-company-golden-gate-park-8

We even got a chance to go off roading with the segways. It was bumpy, but it was super fun.

electric-tour-company-golden-gate-park-7

One of the funnest part of the ride was doing the free ride around the lake so we could break out of formation and test the high speeds of the seaways. The seaways are set to hit tops speeds of 10 miles per hour, which isn’t too quick when going downhill.

electric-tour-company-golden-gate-park-3

The time flies quite quickly, but all of our calves were sore by the end of the tour.

Final Thoughts

The Golden Gate Park Segway tour is a fun way to explore the park while riding a segway. We mostly saw tourists like ourselves were on this tour. At $75, it’s a bit steep for 2.5 hours, but you’ll get some fun photos out of it and you can tell all your friends you are a pro at riding a segway.

madame-tussauds-sf-2

Madame Tussauds has one of their wax museums located in Fisherman’s Wharf. The San Francisco location opened in 2014 and became the 17th Madame Tussauds museum to open worldwide. There are celebrities that are key to San Francisco.

madame-tussauds-sf-3

Tony Bennett is the first wax figure that greets you at Madame Tussauds in front of a picture of Lombard Street. He left his heart in San Francisco and is a Giants fan.

madame-tussauds-sf-4

Inside the wax museum is 6 areas with different notable stars:

  • Music Zone
  • Leaders & Entrepreneurs
  • Sports Zone
  • Spirit of San Francisco
  • Film Zone
  • A-List Zone

madame-tussauds-sf-6

You’ll most likely know a majority of the wax figures here as they are all part of pop culture.

madame-tussauds-sf-5

I came on a weekday afternoon with a friend and it wasn’t very busy, which was good so I could take my time posing with Obama.

madame-tussauds-sf-7

They keep their wax figures up to date and one of their newer ones is Stephen Curry – the Golden State Warriors All-Star.

madame-tussauds-sf-8

Jeremy Lin grew up in San Francisco and has done his city proud, so you’ll see him making a slam dunk…but no basketball is seen here.

madame-tussauds-sf-9

You’ll even see older icons like Muhammad Ali. You can try to KO him, but he won’t budge.

madame-tussauds-sf-10

In the Music Zone, Madonna, Lady GaGa, Elvis, and Beyonce are a few of the many celebrities you can pose with.

madame-tussauds-sf-11

You can touch all you want and make weird poses. Everyone does it, so don’t be embarrassed.

madame-tussauds-sf-13

You can even have a fake breakfast with Tiffany.

madame-tussauds-sf-15

Our favourite one of all was ET! They have a red hoodie that you can wear, just like in the movie.

madame-tussauds-sf-16

Spiderman is hanging around, so watch out for him.

madame-tussauds-sf-18

Since it was pretty empty, it is pretty eerie that all these beautiful wax figures are staring at you with weird poses.

madame-tussauds-sf-19

My favourite guys – Neil Patrick Harris looking dashing as always.

madame-tussauds-sf-20

I got up close and personal with George Clooney on the couch. Apparently it’s a very popular pose, so I had to do it.

madame-tussauds-sf-1

It was fun to see all the wax figures, but it’s definitely one of those tourist places located in major cities in North America. I normally wouldn’t think about going to Madame Tussauds as there are so many other things to do in San Francisco, but I’m glad I tried it.

Buying adult tickets online, you save 20% off rather than purchasing it there, so I would suggest you purchase your tickets ahead of time.

If you have the GO San Francisco Card from Smart Destinations, it’s part of the pass, so you might as well come here as there are many other attractions like Aquarium of the Bay, Ripley’s, Bay Cruise, Exploratorium and San Francisco Dungeon are very close by. You might as well hit them all to make the most out of the pass.

bibo-1

BiBo Pizzeria has opened their second location at McArthur Glen Designer Outlet. They specialize in authentic Neapolitan pizza and handmade pastas created from the highest quality ingredients selected specially by their team and imported directly from the gardens and farms of Italy.

I came here as a guest of McArthur Glen Designer Outlet to try out BiBo’s signature menu items.

Interior

bibo-2

The interior is large and has lots of seats, so they can cater to small to large groups. They also hots private parties too.

Wine

bibo-4

Gavi di Gavi is their exclusive white wine made for Bibo. Wine and Italian food go very well together.

Sangiovese Tollo is their signature red wine pairs very well with their pasta and pizza dishes.

bibo-5

Neapolitan pizza

bibo-13

Pizza Crudo has fresh tomato, mozzarella, Parma prosciutto, arugula,  and Parmigiano Reggiano. Very fresh ingredients on top and I love the prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano.

bibo-12

Pizza Diavola has tomato, mozzarella, and pepperoni. Nice and meaty. I like the parts of the pepperoni that get crisp on the edge.

bibo-10

Pizza margherita has tomato, mozzarella, and basil. A nice char on the pizza and crunchy crust. I love a good simple pizza. One of my favourites.

Handmade pasta

bibo-9

Ravioli ricotta e spinaci has handmade ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach, served with Italian datterini tomato sauce. Large pieces of ravioli and tastes good.

bibo-1-2

Gnocchi alla Tirolese has handmade gnocchi with speck, radicchio, gorgonzola, and sprinkled with walnuts. I felt this dish was pretty rich and heavy. It’s best shared with a group rather eating it all yourself.

Final Thoughts

bibo-11

Overall, the food is decent, but I felt the pizza could be more crisp in the centre. The centre is a tad soggy.

They also have gluten-free options for their pizza and pasta dishes.

arguello-1

Arguello is located in the historic Presidio Officers’ Club. They serve up Mexican cuisine capturing the cultural heritage of the Presidio and a contemporary bar with craft cocktails. Chef Traci Des Jardins put together their menu for Arguello.

I was invited by the Presidio Trust to check out their lunch menu.

Interior

arguello-9

The interior is dim with lower ceilings. It makes the atmosphere cozy. There are a few booth seats but majority are tables of 4.

arguello-2

Sides

arguello-3

Chips, Salsas and Guacamole was aa good way to start the meal. The chips were crisp and was good to snack on them while waiting for the meals to arrive. The guacamole was my favourite item to dip the chips into. I have an obsession with avocados.

Tacos

arguello-5

Grilled shrimp, cabbage slaw, and citrus-habanero salsa had a few pieces of the plump shrimp. This was one of the popular tacos on the menu. Seasoned well, but I wish they did something more to the tortilla like grill or warm it up.

arguello-6

Marinated Asada, cascabel-ginger and salsa was the second taco I got. It was very meaty and tender but the sauce that went with it wasn’t what I was expecting.

arguello-4

Cemita is a sandwich with beans, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and oaxaca cheese. My friend seemed to like this for lunch.

Dessert

arguello-8

Churros were a nice treat at the end of the meal. There are 2 pieces of churros that come with each order. Horchata ice cream was my favourite ice cream that was served with it.

arguello-7

Overall, all the items we tried were pretty average. Nothing was wrong with the food, but with Mexican food, I felt the like bright vibrant flavours were lacking in the dishes.

philz-coffee-1

Philz Coffee in San Francisco is very popular and has several locations. I was visiting a friend in Palo Alto and she recommended we come here for a cup of coffee.

philz-coffee-2

They aren’t your typical coffee shop.

philz-coffee-3

The coffee shop was packed and full of people on the weekend when we were here.

philz-coffee-4

You order your drink with the barista, then you pay at the counter a bit further away, then you go back to the barista to wait for your order. Weird system, but it works.

philz-1

Mint Mojito Ice Coffee is very popular for the sprigs of mint. It is minty, sweet and creamy. I was surprised by how well mint and coffee go together.

philz-2

Jamaican Blue Mountain is described as having the aroma of citrus, milk chocolate and honey. It as a medium acidity and body. Very good!

Overall, I really enjoyed the coffee and they were super unique. I would highly recommend it.

vcc-chefs-table-fall-1

Vancouver Community College has brought back their popular again – VCC Chef’s Table for the Fall until October 14 at their Broadway Campus. I came here last Summer and was moved by the amazing experience. You can check out that review here.

I am a huge fan of dining at culinary art schools as meals are well priced, tastes great and it helps train our future chefs. The 5 course meal is $30 and wine pairings is an additional $15. When you see the pictures, the price point is just sooo good.

I came with a few of my friends to check it out.

vcc-chefs-table-fall-9

Chef Hamid Salimian i back at it again sharing his knowledge and expertise with a new generation of chefs as an instructor in the VCC Culinary Arts program. He did an awesome job crafting the menu with the students.

vcc-chefs-table-fall-6

Dining Area

vcc-chefs-table-fall-3

The table is set up like a U-shape, so everyone gets a good view of the students preparing each dish. Since I did come with 7 people, it was a bit hard conversing with the other side of the table due to the set up. Most other groups were in either 2’s or 4’s.

Wine Pairings

vcc-chefs-table-fall-2

For $15 for wine paired with 5 dishes, it’s a pretty good value.

We got the opportunity to try:

All very good wines that were paired with each dish.

vcc-chefs-table-fall-4

Sturgeon Crudo

vcc-chefs-table-fall-5

This beautiful dish has scallop, side stripe, egg yolk puree, trout caviar. It is paired with the Fern Walk Sauvignon Blanc 2014. The saltiness from the caviar went well with the delicate flavours of the scallop, shrimp and sturgeon.

Smoked Black Cod

vcc-chefs-table-fall-7

The dish also has sunflower, sunchoke, pearl onions, and a porcini foam. It is paired with the Luna Argenta Prosecco Treviso Brut. Loved the different textures of the plate. A good amount of smokiness on that black cod.

Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Parfait

vcc-chefs-table-fall-11

The dish also has pickled veggies, chicken lover fie gras, pickled veal tongue, beets and a bone marrow ball. The bone marrow ball pops in your mouth and all that delicious flavours coats your mouth. There was a generous amount of foie gras, so I wished there were were chips to go with it.

The dish was paired with the See Ya Later Ranch Gewurztraminer 2015.

Bacon Wrapped Lamb Loin

vcc-chefs-table-fall-14

The plate is dressed with portobello, parsnip, tomato, and lamb jus. That lamb loin and bacon was so tender. Great flavours and we all wanted more.

This is paired with the Pepperwood Grove Old Wine Zinfandel 2013.

Dark Chocolate

vcc-chefs-table-fall-17

The evening ended with the Dark Chocolate dessert which has chocolate soil, chocolate rocks and chocolate ice cream. Great for chocolate lovers.

The last pairing of the night was the Whistler Late Harvest Chardonnay 2014.

Final Thoughts

vcc-chefs-table-fall-16

It was a pleasure dining here again to see all the students creating the dishes right in front of our eyes. All the dishes came at a good pace and it was a great experience. For $30 for 5 dishes, it is worth the price. I’ll definitely be next for the next dinner. It was my 3rd time trying their Chef’s Table and the amount of techniques used here are amazing.
